Wooow Gayon. Matt, Thanks for posting it. That is what i saw sa www.Naga.gov.ph last year, kaya lang if i'm not mistaken, there are numbers of Skyscraper pa. That is probably the original version of their prespective. I never saw the second picture " Building like Rome one block at a time", maybe a portion of that design will be implemented, If you look at the top picture, there is a big difference from the middle picture.
LANDCO Developing a huge commercial area will be an ambitous plan compare to that of SM City Naga (If they construct in CBD II) and Landco constructing a Skyscrapers will be good for SME/entrepreneurs in Bicol to put up their business office there. And lastly the area in ALmeda is much higher than that of CBD I and II. There is no risk for flood.

By the way Kevin, your right, the city is now planning to transfer the terminal in Almeda highway. The councilors just say that they want a systematic and well planned terminal in Naga, but i think it's about the Lanco properties dev. I think the councilors will act soon.

Ika palan Kevin anong course mo sa UPLB? agriculture? dapat architectural landscaping..pang Skyscraper yan.

i hope they would have that terminal done soon so as to hasten the time of groundbreaking of PM there..

DAR Secretary Nasser C. Pangandaman approved on May 15, 2006 the land conversion of 11.2094 hectares of agricultural land into commercial purpose located at Barangays Concepcion and Tabuco, Naga City. DARCO Order No. CON-065-116, Series of 2006 took favorable action on the petition filed by Socorro Martirez and Felicidad Martirez-Jaucian in 2002.

The parcel of land is composed of three lots with TCT numbers T-11475, and T-11476 and has an aggregate area of 14.5 hectares. It is contiguous with flat topography. Adjacent to this land is the Almeda Highway and residential houses, and bounded on the left and right by rice fields.

On August 10, 2005, said landholding was certified as High Density Residential Zone by Regional Director Florencio P. Tingzon of the Housing Land Use Regulatory Board (HLURB) based on the approved Comprehensive Land Use Plan (CLUP) of the Naga City government through Resolution No. 2000-353 on November 15, 2000, and the amended City Zoning Ordinance No. 2002-043 on July 3, 2002 respectively. Said landholding has no irrigation facilities, and was certified to be no longer suited for agricultural production by the Department of Agriculture.

Section 65 of Republic Act No. 6657 or the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Law of 1988 provides that “the DAR may authorize the conversion if the subject land ceases to be economically feasible and sound for agricultural purposes, or the locality has become urbanized and the land will have a greater economic value for residential, commercial, and industrial purposes.”

The Conversion Order likewise states that “the development of the area shall commence within one year from the receipt by the applicants of this Order following its submitted project implementation schedule, and shall be completed within 2 years from the date of receipt of this order.”

As per reliable source, said landholding was negotiated to be purchased by the Landco Development Corporation which owned and developed the Pacific Mall in Legazpi City.

www.bicolmail.com

--------------------

DAR just recently okeyed the conversion of 11 hectares of land in mabulo and concepcion in Naga from agricultural land into commercial purpose area. And according to the article that i have read in Bicolmail, Landco Development Corp negotiated the said purchased. Adjacent to this land is the Almeda Highway and residential houses, and bounded on the left and right by rice fields. Maybe a commercial center will soon rise in these area.

HI Nikki , great pics.I'm really sorry for not sharing pics with you all. I just have to repair my digicam Canon Powershot maybe the lens has a problem. Or someday I can share with you all.

Avenue Square is really nice. Nikki have you heard that Shakey's will set up a business there? I know they had pull out at the Aristocrat building more than a year ago. Somebody told me that they will transfer from Avenue square.

To Nikki, About your Question. CBD II former Van terminal area was relocated by the city because real owners of that lot and who are very rich businessman, had a knowledge from the real sources that SM city Naga will soon start there propose contruction, now in order to prepare for their future business plans, they had to fench their lot. Aside from the former Van terminal area, they also have a lot just besides the CBD bus terminal as you see it there.

Landco allots P4.3B for new projects
Posted: 4:04 AM | Mar. 29, 2006
Elizabeth L. Sanchez
Inquirer

PROPERTY developer Landco Pacific Corp., a subsidiary of Metro Pacific Corp., is setting aside P4.3 billion for the next three years to finance at least four key property projects, company president Alfred Xerez-Burgos Jr. said. Landco is developing Playa Calatagan in Batangas province, a seaside beach destination covering 62 hectares envisioned to be the "Boracay" of Luzon. Landco is also proposing a massive tourism development at the 400-hectare Villa Escudero resort in San Pablo City in Laguna province, which will house a sanctuary, golf, village and campus districts. Landco officials earlier projected the company might need between P1 billion and P5 billion for the Villa Escudero development, a joint venture with the Escudero family. Another project, Montelago, in a 102-hectare property in San Pablo, is part of the Escudero family's landholdings. The first phase consists of 33 hectares with 905 residential lots. Landco will also develop a residential community in Quezon City. It will also build a shopping center in Naga City, in the Bicol region, under its Pacific Mall brand. It is teaming up with the Metro Gaisano group for this venture.

Landco has Pacific Malls in Nueva Ecija province and in the cities of Lucena and Legazpi. Landco aims to double its revenues to P4 billion by 2007 and emerge as one of the country's top developers. With INQ7.net

SM to build mall in Naga CBD ll
By Ulysses E. Israel

ANOTHER shopping mall soon to be built in the heart of Naga City will bolster the perception that indeed Naga City is poised to become the center of commerce in the entire Bicol Region. This time it’s coming from the country’s premiere shopping mall developer - the ShoeMart (SM) Group.

Observers see the entry of SM Group into Naga City as a “positive/ development”, though it may have short term negative effects to local retailers; but in the long run the consumers, the local producers and economy of Metro Naga and neighboring towns will benefit from this development.

Nicolas Beda Priela, PCCI Governor for Bicol, said that at present in Naga City only LCC Mall can be classified as a shopping mall, others can be categorized as arcades and department stores. To the local retailers and producers, it opens the door to new opportunities as they will benefit from becoming stall owners inside the mall and suppliers to the requirements of the mega-store, he said.

A reliable source has revealed to the Bicol Mail that the SM Prime Holdings, Inc., developer of SM Malls, has entered into a lease contract with the New Site Realty and Property Ventures, Inc. to lease the property of the latter in the Central Business District (CBD) II in Barangay Triangulo, Naga City.

Earlier, the SM Group was reported scouting for a place in Naga City where it could build its shopping mall. The New Site Realty Group offered its property in CBD II to the SM Group and negotiations resulted to the signing of a lease contract between the two parties.

The SM Group has leased the property of the New Site Realty Group headed by Romeo Tan for a period of fifty years. The construction of the mall, the source said, will start in 2007.

According to Priela, the entry of big shopping mall developers into Naga City such as the SM Group and the Pacific Mall should not cause apprehension among local retailers for fear that they may be displaced in the process. Rather, it should be viewed as opportunities and therefore should adapt to the changes.

The presence of the big malls, he explained, will cause a “clear delineation of segments” in the market as shopping in the malls has a corresponding premium to it. The malls may be offering convenience, better services, air conditioned commercial spaces but all these will be factored in their pricing so the competitive price advantage of stalls in public market will prevail.

Retailers should learn from the experiences of local restaurant operators like Biggs, Graceland and others who have learned to cope with the challenges posed by the coming of nationwide food chain outlets such as Jolibee, McDonald, Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC), Chowking and the like, he said.

Significant net effect of the coming of big establishments into Naga City is that the quality of products and services offered has improved thereby putting a pressure on the local businesses to improve their own offerings in order to survive and compete, he said. Resiliency, competitiveness of the local business will be tested in food, garments, households sectors, he said.

These service-oriented business have also created employment opportunities for the local populace, especially the new graduates and the unemployed, he said. In addition, the local producers of goods stand to benefit as they could become suppliers to the supermarket and to the various retail outlets that will be established in the shopping mall. The producers should now strengthen their production capabilities: quality-wise and volume-wise. They should start to find their respective niche, Priela added.

On the part of the consumers, shopping or buying of their day-to-day necessities and requirements will be made more convenient as the SM Malls tend to house everything that consumer wants under one roof.

Economists also view the onrush of shopping malls as one significant economic activities that stimulate domestic spending. Households will have less savings but the increase in domestic demand will stimulate production and manufacturing.

Priela said what drive the big mall developers to set up their business here in Naga City are prevailing economic indicators proving that the demand here is sufficient enough to warrant investments be put into place the soonest time possible. He cited the average household income in Naga City is higher than the national average. The amount of taxes being generated by the local and national governments also represents economic growth and market size. These factors attract investments in due time, he explained.

you guys know where this is gonna be located?
SM has a landbank in Naga city so hopefully no delays like with landco's pacific mall.

yup nikki's right. as far as i know, jolibee in naga opened way back in the early 90s, legazpi's was in 1997 (?) and the rest are fairly recent as well, right?
i read some news articles that jolibee set up a stand in Iriga city but people there voted against it or something. can you believe that? hehe

Yes. Mat and Nikki, it's true that Naga is a sort of Jumping board to all parts of Bicol region. If they succeed in their venture here in Naga definitely they expand in Legaspi and other cities in Bicol. Any corporate business would like to invest in Bicol, they always start to put up here in Naga. They use Naga City as a basis for their expansion in the Bicol region. I believe soon they will put up KFC, Max's or even Pizza Hut in Legaspi.
Iriga City may not like Jollibee, but at least they will not deny our local Biggs or even Graceland - i dont know if Graceland already open. Graceland Sorsogon is really a doing well. I dont know if the already set up Biggs -Sorsogon. :)

And also, if you try to download Yahoo-Widget engine and you add weather in your locality, you will find out that you can't download a weather update in Naga in your Yahoo-Widget engine, but you can download DAET, VIRAC, LEGASPI and Even Sorsogon.

here's a blog that i saw in the internet....la lng just wanna post it here!!hehehe

"I'd been to Naga City for 4 days cos it's my cousin's wedding. Was that a lame 'scuse or what?

Anyhoo, yeah, I was part of my cousin's wedding. I marched on a red carpet with my girl partner, I'm in barong, and the best part was that I was assigned to hold a golden bling bling with a heart and lots of coins in it I then wore onto my cousin and then her husband-to-be's necks. And I said: "In front of Christ, I bind you with a bling bling: make money or your family-to-be die."

After that we went to Naga's market. It's so cool... I'd say it's much better than San Pablo's... there's one section called the "Dried Fish Section". It's kinda like an aquatic museum like that museum in our campus but instead of the specimen in bottles soaked in chloroform, the exhibitted items were dried. There're dried fish, dried long fish, dried fish cut on the belly into halves, dried small fish, dried squid and lots more. Speaking of San Pablo, I saw a billboard of Bigg's and I saw San Pablo's name in Naga City, I was like "WOw!"

Eleven outstanding Naguenos conferred mayoral awards

City Hall---Eleven outstanding Naguenos were this year’s recipients of the 2006 Naga City Mayoral Awards---three females and eight males---who have distinguished themselves in their chosen fields of endeavor and brought honor and pride to the city of their birth.

Special Awards were given to two distinguished Nagueños: visual artist Raul Cabalquinto Alcomendas and Ramon Solita Tolaram who was also the recipient of the Mayoral Special Award in 1976.

Considered as the guardian of Bicol art and history and Ina’s visual artist, Raul Alcomendas has been preserving bikol heritage, stories and legends on canvas and brings back to life past events in colorful hues, strokes and paints.

Alcomendas’ works proudly adorns the stained glass windows of the San Francisco Church and displayed in numerous exhibits in and outside the country notably in Singapore and Germany, thus, propagating Naga’s rich history and culture to art lovers, collectors, visitors and foreigners alike.

One of the esteemed founders of the local arts group Muknang Bikolnon, the celebrated visual artist earned numerous awards in local and national arts competitions which include the Ateneo de Naga, Metro Bank, UNC Foundation Day art competitions.

The other special honoree is Ramon Solita Tolaram, a pillar in local journalism whose independent editorials and columns condemned the dictatorship at the onset of martial law through his weekly tabloid, Naga Times, the last of the local papers to be padlocked in the country.

Even at the ripe old age of 75, Tolaram continues to write editorials and is known to his peers as the “Father of Local Newspapers” being an elder statesman, adviser, consultant and mentor of Naga-based media practitioners.

In 2003, the veteran journalist was conferred the PAPI Founder’s and Recognition Awards during the 8th National Congress.

One of the 2006 mayoral recognition awardees is Mr. Alfredo Basilan Bermas, an honest tricycle driver, who returned the amount of P20,000.00 which was accidentally left by a passenger. A very respectable man, Mr. Bermas went out of his way and coordinated with the PNP and several radio stations for the return of the black bag containing the amount and important documents to the rightful owner.

In the field of technology, Cesar Bermundo and Alex Barja made their native city proud as they invented the computer software: Simplified Statistics for Beginners and the Test Checker and Analyzer which are available internationally through the internet.

Cited by the DOST/TAPI 2005 Likha (for outstanding creative research) and by the TESDA (as 1st place in computer-aided design), the software crafted by Bermundo and Barja is currently used by the Mapua Institute of Technology and the MERALCO Foundation.
Community organizer Salve Alemania Cadag gave urban poor dwellers in Naga a cause to celebrate as she painstakingly worked hard to empower the constituents in the barangays through her superb community organizing skills and techniques.

Cadag’s exemplary leadership, dedication and enthusiasm paved the way for the implementation of micro-drainage in Triangulo and Lerma, road networks in Queborac, multipurpose learning center and materials recovery center in Triangulo. Last March 2006, she was recognized by the Partnership of Philippine Support Services Agencies, Inc.

In the realm of medicine, Naga City was catapulted to national prominence as one of her proud daughters, Dr. Mary Joy Perez Coner, topped the Licensure Examinations for Physicians in 2006. A consistent honor student and scholar since her elementary days in Naga Central School I and later at the Philippine Science High School and Ateneo de Manila University.

A cum laude graduate of the Our Lady of Fatima University, Dr. Coner placed 3rd in the Licensure exams for Chemists in 1999.

In the active world of sports, Klarenz Dimaano Chavez bagged the gold medal in the 200 meter butterfly in the recently-concluded Palarong Pambansa 2006 in Naga.

Fr. Lorenzo Juan Bea Jarcia III, a musician-priest, has been composing ecclesiastical music and Bikol songs which romanticize local customs and values that are quintessentially Christian and Bikolnon. An icon of originality, productivity, talent and industry for young Naguenos, Fr. Jarcia has been a recipient of various music awards and conducted singing engagements in local scene and in the USA.

A teacher of teachers, Dr. Orfelina Ocampo Tuy started her service to the molding of the Nagueños in the early 70s at the Naga Central School and rose from the ranks to become the director of the National Educators Academy of the Philippines (NEAP) and devoted her life to the uplift the quality and efficiency of public teachers.

A co-author of the three-act play on bikol epic: Handiong, the Legendary Hero of Ibalong (1975), Dr. Orfelina Tuy has authored different training modules and programs aside from the seminars she conducts.

Her alma mater, USI conferred on her the Blessed Rosalie Rendu (2006 USI Alumni awards) for her outstanding achievement in her professional field and exhiting an exemplary level of Vincentian values.

Last but not the least awardee, Archbishop Adolfo Tito Camacho Yllana, D.D. is the first Naga City-born archbishop and the only bikolano in the diplomatic corps of the Holy See. His appointment as apostolic nuncio is a papal recognition of him being a “jewel” among the Bikol clergy and a testament to the archbishop’s reputable character and meritorious moral integrity.

Archbishop Yllana is considered by many as a Gift of God from the people of Naga for the whole world.

The criteria considered in the selection of the awardees include, among others, the nominee’s personal qualifications, moral integrity, community involvement, degree of commitment and positive contribution to the city’s growth, honor and glory.

The committee which screened, evaluated and validated all the documents pertaining to the search were composed of Rev. Msgr. Romulo A. Vergara, HP, as chair and Dr. Lourdes S. Anonas, J. Antonio A. Amparado, Amelita P. Zaens and Melissa Sieglinde B. Bulaong as members.

It's great to see those manila based fastfoods sprawling in Naga city. Hope next year, SM will construct its mall in CBD II. Actually i'm in Manila but i was born in Bicol, Sorsogon. Btwn the two cities of Legaspi & Naga, I prefer Naga to be more progressive & bigger in terms of business establishments, such as resto, bars, malls, & nightlife. Magsaysay Avenue, where Avenue Square is located, i think it will become the Malate or Eastwood City of Bicol. More pics of Emall & Avenue Square, as well as Paseo de Caceres.............

Hi Kevin, i though "page 15" was the last window for our SSC forum- sorry.

Thanks Aries , maybe you can visit us here in naga or are you often visit Bicol? There is an upcoming Second Bicol Business Week 2006 in the plaza, there are a number of franchisers that will exhibit on June 18. It's true that Magsaysay Avenue will soon be like Malate or Eastwood City of Bicol. I usually drop at Eastwood near Acropolis with my business associate.

Other than that we also have 17th-18th century a Spanish influence plaza, patio, Baroque style churches and a universidad that can be a tourist destination again.

And lastly San Francisco Church is been re-model, "inspired" by the century old Franciscan Church in Spain and California (during their mission in the Americas).

A Good combination of SPANISH "Quince Martirez" PLAZA in the center and across is the 17th-18th. CENTURY OLD FRANCISCAN CHURCH. And the result is...... YOU ARE ALREADY IN SPAIN OR AMERICAS.

WOW PHILIPPINES TALAGA . :)

Wow, at least Naga city does not only progress in constructing new buildings, malls etc. but preserving its historical structures & culture as well. WOW NAGA. Im really longing to see it flourish with new skylines.

Naga City Mayor Jesse M. Robredo expressed delight over the recent announcement of the Department of Education region V of the results of Regional Unified Achievement Test for school year 2005-2006.

Naga City was tops in all learning areas among the elementary schools in the seven cities and six provinces in the region.

According to results furnished by the DepEd, the mean performance level score of Naga City in the eight learning areas averaged 71.39 topping the region with Legaspi City and Iriga City following behind with 69.58 and 67.73 average points.

Completing the first five rankings consisting mostly of the region’s cities were Sorsogon City-4th and Tabaco City-5th, except for Ligao City and Masbate City which placed 10th and 12th, respectively.

Among the provinces, the rankings favored Catanduanes (6th), Camarines Norte (7th), Camarines Sur (8th), Masbate (9th), Sorsogon (11th) with Albay province at the cellar.

Naga’s scorecard in all eight learning areas reflected strong performance in English (75.46), Mathematics (73.44), Science and Math (65.17), Filipino (78.61), Makabayan (64.27), Sibika at Kultura/HEKASI (64.27), Edukasyon Pantahanan at Pangkabuhayan (EPP) (65.84)and MSEP (59.43).

Randomly selected for the regional unified achievement test were the Naga Central School I, Don Manuel Abella, and Mabolo elementary schools which performed remarkably in English, Mathematics and Filipino, among other learning areas.

Meanwhile, the outcome of the recent DepEd city division achievement test in elementary level showed Jose Rizal ES topping the list with an average score of 64.00 followed by the Naga Central School II, Del Rosario ES, Naga Central School I and Carolina ES.

The other half of the city’s achievement test “top ten” include Panicuason ES, Teodora Moscosa ES, Villa Corazon ES, Don Manuel Abella ES and Calauag ES.

In the secondary level, the Naga City Science High School garnered an average score of 57.96 with its strong showing in English and Science to top the division achievement test.

Concepcion Pequena HS is in second place with above-average scores in all learning areas except in English and Science while Camarines Sur National HS was buoyed by its strong performance in Filipino.

As chair of the Naga City School Board, the city mayor was instrumental in the inception of new initiatives and innovations towards improvement of the quality of teaching notably the acquisition of textbooks that enabled Naga to attain a 1:1 textbook-student ratio from Grade 1 to 4th year HS students and the engagement of more teachers aimed at reducing class size and increasing participation rate at the high school level.

“The recent strong showing of our elementary and high school students is a great improvement compared to the previous National Diagnostic Test results whereby elementary students nationwide scored only between 38 to 42 percent in English, Math and Science while high school students scored only between 27 to 30 percent in the same subjects,” said Mayor Robredo, “truly, our school board’s various innovations are paying off.”

Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia announced yesterday that the Bacolod POC has been named one of the five Most Outstanding Peace and Order Councils in the country for 2005.

Leonardia said he has been invited to be in Malacañang Wednesday for the awarding ceremonies of the 2005 Most Outstanding Peace and Order Councils in the Philippines.

Other winners are the cities of Makati, Davao, Naga and Olongapo.

Leonardia said the winners had been previously announced in a national assembly at the National Police Commission Office attended by Reynaldo Puno, Department of Interior and Local Government secretary.

During that meeting, the President instructed Puno to have the awarding rites in Malacañang, considering the significance and importance of the Peace and Order Council in the Philippines, and to highlight the private sector involvement in the efforts of the government for peace and order, he also said.

Leonardia said, "We are happy that we are among the five winners in the Philippines, together with giant cities like Makati and Davao, which have huge budgets for peace and order. I think that is something to rejoice about considering that Bacolod City has a budget of only P675 million a year," he said.

Leonardia said one of the factors considered by the evaluators is the involvement of volunteer groups in Bacolod like the Amity and Chamber Volunteers, which was given high ratings. Other factors include the regularity of meetings and projects implemented by the POC, he added.*CGS

i just don't understand kung bakit may ibang tao na ang galing mag put-down ng ibang cities o lugar. ako, i'm a proud Legazpeño, but i also love Naga, and Bicol as a whole..hehe..i hate it pag may nagiinstigate ng rivalry, that's very narrow-minded..pero i guess di na maiwasan, hehe. sana lang instead of "fighting and throwing bad words against each other" e mag suportahan and magtulungan na lang..that way, lahat panalo. :okay: :) Gabos man kita Uragon!!

Hi Dex,
Agree on that. We should be helping each other if we want our region to develop fully. We are still among the poorer region. It is only now, that we have a sizeable progress headway. But not fully that progressive. There are a number of provinces in the bicol region needs help, like province of Masbate(mostly are poor) and also Cam. Norte.

We really need to work together for the betterment of our region. We are almost left behind by other regions too. Naga and Legaspi are still classified a a small Cities. and the rest of the cities are 3rd or 5th class in our region. Worst, other regions will look down at us and it's embarassing to find out that we are figthing to each other.

This is what I know and learn. Naga is the the "heart of the Bicol region". It was been debated long time ago, sometime of the 60's but it was really confirmed by politicians, different sectors of the society and from different places in the region that Naga City is the heart of Bicol Region. It was not just a mere instant imagination that people in Naga just came about. It was undenied by the whole region.

Why? Because Naga was really progressive commercially,a center of educational institution and rich in culture and people. etc...

And not only that Naga City is the site of all the "REGIONAL OFFICES OF THE GOVERNMENT". some of this is office is situated in Panganiban Ave. and the area what is now LCC Mall.

Naga City is really the bustly City and the rest are merely small and big towns. Legaspi was already a city, but not that progressive.

During the time of the Marcos Administration, he had a group of consultant or what we call as think tank. They like to transfer the Regional offices of the Government to Legaspi City. Because they like OTHER PROVINCES TO become progressive too .

The whole idea is to expand the progress NOT ONLY IN NAGA CITY, but throughout the whole bicol region. They believe that Naga City can be independent and sufficient of itself.

They would like put it in Legaspi City, because it's strategically located to other provinces like Masbate, Catanduanes and Sorsogon. So that Government services will be nearer and easier compare to Naga. Naga City is little bit to far from the north than in Legaspi.

Finally, It was approve by Marcos during his time with the P.D. (Presidential Decree). I only know a regional office that is still around- the DA (dept. Agriculture in Pili) before that GSIS, NIA, NBI where here lately. and the rest transfer gradually somewhere around late 70's to 80's.

There are a number of people or agency who where against the transfer during that time, because what they believe, if they pull out in Naga, it will no longer be progressive. Other reason is govt. staff and heads will make it hard for them to travel going home to Naga from Legaspi.

But the Marcos consultant/ Think tank would be right. they believe Naga is sufficient and can stand as progressive even without the Regional Offices. and also Naga was given the power to be independent from the Provincial Government. That is the reason why, we don't vote for the governor. but the advantage also the governor has no power over Naga City. :) ( many bicolanos don't know about this, if we where under the governor probably 3rd class pa kita today-lalo na si Gurang)

I like to say this ,because there is wrong notion why, the Regional Offices was transfer in Legaspi City. Other people are making this a big issue and started this kind of WORDS OF WAR.

This is the time, i really like to share my knowledge about our Rich Bicol history.

" DON'T STOP LEARNING DIFFRENT THINGS" :)

There will always be rivalry as long as there is no meeting point between the two powerhouse. Seems like the prevailing theme is "To each his own." That's why the leadership of Naga and Legazpi should meet and arrange a common goal.

as far as I know, correct me if I'm wrong, the city governments of both Naga and Legazpi, also the provinces of Albay and Camarines Sur, are always in partnership when it comes to projects and stuff, like this Bicol Business Week and almost always has a good turnout.

thanks for the info bobby, hehe :okay:
Actually i believe there's no need to emphasize Naga's progressiveness, being more 'bustling', or being the heart of Bicol culture, etc etc.
Every Bicolano knows that and it's already a given.
People just need to broaden up their minds and realize that there's no point in provoking a rivalry between two cities that are practically twins. We need to think and look beyond our own backyards too. Lochinvar is right, the government of the two cities should have a common goal; but that's easier said than done.

I think the first step is for the two biggest universities, Ateneo de Naga and Bicol University, to create a commission consisting of their very best minds, create a formula for success of the two powerhouse combined, then put the leaders of Naga, Iriga, Legazpi, Camarines Sur and Albay together and present their proposals. Who knows, they might be receptive to the ideas. Ideas from Silicon Valley and Boston usually come from universities. By economies of scale, these leaders can group together so they would be in a better position to negotiate with prospective investors. Just like a smaller version of mega group being initiated by GMA.

I was trying to look at what I wrote yesterday night. And realies that, i keep on repeating the words Naga and its progressiveness. and insensitive with other cities like Legaspi, and it's importances to the Bicol region. :runaway:
But my intention was not to cause any bias to other cities.
Honestly i might be carried away by some people in making this statement. :scouserd: But tried to be reasonable and careful that i may not hurt others.

Yes, I really agree the keywords are " Don't Provoke ". We will say something good and constructive about the Cities and other places in Bicol. Every Cities has it's achevements for the contribution of the whole Bicol Region. Lets make this Forum/ Multimedia useful to the our end and that is for the development of Bicol. To overcome ignorance and inform people.

Legaspi and Naga are melting pot to all Bicolanos, like for example my grandmom's from my father side is from Legaspi and my mother side from Oas. But we are living already in Naga. My first counsin is living in Legaspi and working there, married to a native of Legaspi (with an ancestry in pangasinan). Naga is a melting pot of all Bicolanos. In my Calle, The people here came from different places in Bicol. My Grandparents came here before WW II. and bought a sizable lot in Naga.

Probably 10-5% or less are the "original resident" of Naga, and i think Legaspi might be like that too.

Therefore, I don't find a real conflict at all.

If the 2 cities should have a common goal..- They are the ones can answer that, it's too general.
For me our local Government are busy doing their job for a specific needs of their locality.

^^i like the discussion..i didn't see any biases though some say they are biased..
yes, the two cities are the melting pot of cultures in the regions mostly because the 2 have greater population than any other cities and that a big chunk of the population does not come from bicol..
i just hope the two cities have their own niches and stop arguing which really is the best.. :okay:

i think it will be better if people from both cities (naga nd legaspi) would just compliment the other city where they are not a resident. instead of bragging wat our city has.....for me it's good that we are all proud of the city where we live...
but it is usually the cause of many word wars and rivalry between the residents of the two cities...so, since everybody knows that we are proud of our cities we don't need to repeatedly say it and cause troubles..instead lets try to post here those things that we like from the other city...

example: people from naga will tell things that they like best about legaspi...and people from legaspi will tell things that they like about naga..

in that way we can promote other cities aside from our own...and ofcourse there will be peace and order...:):):)

Outstanding Businessmen Honored

Email this article | Post a comment

Monday June 26, 2006

SIX outstanding Bicolano businessmen from the region’s six provinces were conferred last Sunday, June 25, the “2006 Halyao Awards” during the culmination rites of the highly successful 2nd Bicol Business Week. “Halyao” is a pre-Hispanic Bicolano word for “merchant”.

Pitching in for his famous father, Viviene K. Tan presented the awards.

Viviene, the pretty young and brainy daughter of taipan Lucio Tan who led last year’s Halyao Awards as “Most Distinguished Bicolano Business Icon”, was assisted by Naga City Mayor Jesse M. Robredo, Camarines Sur Vice-Governor Salvio Fortuno, and Awards Committee Chair Adolfo Olivan during the awarding rites held at the Regent Hotel in downtown Naga.

Viviene said she was glad to have come to the city which “my dad once considered home.”

The young Lucio grew and studied in Naga as a young schoolboy after his father came here as an immigrant from Fujian, China.

This year’s six outstanding Bicolano businessmen are: Jesus R. Arboleda (Albay); Wilson Kho (Camarines Norte); Fidel L. Cu (Naga and Camarines Sur); Concepcion Angbangiok Co (Catanduanes); Dr. Antonio Chang (Masbate), and; Wilbert Lee (Sorsogon).

They were cited for their outstanding performance in the field of business, entrepreneurship and public service for the advancement of Bicol growth and economy.

The Bicol Business Week is an annual trade exposition organized by the Metro Naga Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in cooperation with the City Government of Naga and the Provincial Government of Camarines Sur and other line agencies and a host of corporate sponsors who believe in Bicol’s collective march towards progress and development.

Following are brief personal writes up about the awardees:

ARBOLEDA

The 9th of the thirteen brothers and sisters of a humble family in Guinobatan, Albay, Justino Roces Arboleda caught international attention by becoming one of the finalists in the World Challenge Contest for Best Grassroots Projects sponsored by the British Broadcasting Corp,. Newsweek, and Shell. His winning entry made use of waste coconut husk to produce coconut fiber and coco coir dust for environmental rehabilitation and soil conditioning. He is the chairman and president of Juboken Enterprises that continues to develop coconut-based products. His Coco Technologies provides marketing and manufacturing support to coconut fiber producers in Bicol.

A consistent honor student, this awardee was a scholar at the University of the Philippines. Halfway thru his UP education, he was given scholarship to finish his BS and MS in Agricultural Engineering in Tokyo University where he was cited as “Most Outstanding Foreign Student” and Ph.D in Tsukuba University, also in Japan.

Back in the Philippines, he set up Blackheads Corp., a semi-conductor company which he later gave up to his brother in favor of work in the academe. The company is now a successful semi-conductor exporter employing 250 people. He spent 15 years in Bicol University where he eventually became Dean of its College of Agriculture and as University Vice-President for two years. He soon gave up his promising career in the academe to start a small pioneering company that produces coconut fiber geotextiles to help coconut farmers. The company grew fast and earned the Presidential Golden Shell Award and the Global Eco-Tech Award during the World Expo 2005 in Aichi, Japan.

KHO

The man who started as manager of a one-stop shop retail store in Daet, Camarines Norte is now the biggest local investor in his province. Wilson Kho’s leadership ability and managerial acumen polished by his banking experience have been the key factors that make him the most progressive and dynamic young businessman in Camarines Norte today.

In 1987, he established the Family Merchants Projects Development Corp (FMDC), and modern real estate development in Daet, Camarines Norte was never the same again. His innovative “Pirma Lang, May Lote Ka Na” took his fellow Daeteños by storm as it churned out shelters and lots to families who never dreamed they can own one with relative ease and at affordable cost. Today, his real estate enterprise expanded to build more in other towns in Camarines Norte and beyond, particularly in the cities of Legazpi and Tabaco in Albay.

His company’s success went on to construct the first and only shopping mall in the locality – the Central Plaza Mall which paved the way for the capital town’s second commercial area. Notably, the company was cited as one of the top five corporate business taxpayers, thereby helping strengthen the local government’s capacity to deliver basic services effectively.

CU

Born in Calabanga, Camarines Sur, Fidel L. Cu, finished his Bachelor of Science in Commerce at the University of Nueva Caceres. He is the lone Bicolano Good Citizen of the Philippines Award during the 20th Anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution in February 2006.

Cu is Chairman and President of the G7Bank which used to be the single-unit Rural Bank of Nabua, Inc. When he acquired it in 1979, the bank made a dramatic turnaround under his evolutionary management which henceforth provided services to its three new operating units, and was in time named into the Top Ten rural banks in the Philippines. Within twenty years of operation, G7Bank expanded into seven units, with a branch at Ortigas Center, Pasig City. G7Bank steadily leads the rural banking industry in the Bicol Region and was named by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas as among the biggest rural banks in the country for several years.

As Chairman of G7Holdings Corp., Cu is also the developer of Naga’s premiere lifestyle center, Avenue Square, and of downtown attraction center, Paseo de Caceres distinct Chinese-themed fully-airconditioned Catholic Chapel with Zen meditation garden that crowns the Paseo Building. The establishment of these facilities has provided employment and revenue to the city even as it further moves forward the vision of making Naga City as a lifestyle hub and a showcase of mixed-use establishments.

With his brilliant mind is a soft heart for the poor and the marginalized. His involvement in various socio-civic and religious and service organizations attests to this. Personally, he steers his own FLC Group of Companies to regularly provide medical missions and health services, community and livelihood projects, and other pro-poor activities meant o make a difference in the lives of his fellowmen. During his recent birthday, Mr. Cu shared life’s blessings by giving away wheelchairs and other goodies to persons with disabilities.

ANGBANGIOK CO

Born in Virac, Catanduanes, Concepcion A. Co was the only daughter of Chinese immigrants from mainland China in 1927. When she got married to a Filipino-Chinese businessman, she allowed her husband to manage his hardware and construction business while she continued to attend to her father’s family enterprise until it closed in 1985.

But that did not stop her from pursuing her natural ability in business. She soon established Nicon Services which is engaged in the distributorship of San Miguel beer products in the island province. After her husband passed away, she established the Virac Eastern Hardware, as well as the Eastern Pacific Shipping Corp., an inter-island vessel operating company which, among others, engages in the transport of San Miguel Beer and Coca-Cola products to various points in the country.

Manay Ching, as she is fondly called, is also a caring successful mother. All her four girls and a boy, whom she singly nurtured after the death of her husband, are now professionals managing their family enterprises.

Her being “semi-retired” at this point of her career provides Manay Ching to devote her time to various socio-civic and religious organizations in the province. She is also actively involved with the Catanduanes Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce which is at the forefront of relief operations during calamities that hit the island province.

CHANG

Not many perhaps would know that the president of the prestigious Private Hospitals Association of the Philippines (PHAP), from 2003 to the present, is a fellow full-bloodied Bicolano. He is Dr. Antonio Almonte Chang who operates his own hospital, the St. Anthony Hospital, in Masbate City.

Chang was also president of the Phil. College of Hospital Administrators, from 1991 to 2002. His professional and academic credentials are also equally impressive: a certified fellow at the Canadian Royal College of Surgeons; a senior member of the American Society of Anesthesiology and the Maryland (USA) Society of Anesthesiologists, and; a diplomate in hospital marketing and administration which he earned at the Ateneo de Manila University.

He was also a member of the Board of Governors of the Philippine Medical Association, Bicol for six terms and continues to serve his region in various capacities as: chairman of the provincial federation of non-government organizations, member of the Bicol Regional Development Council, president of the Masbate Chamber of Commerce and Industry for 6 terms, and the member of the Bicol Regional Wage and Productivity Board during both the incumbency of President Fidel V. Ramos and Joseph Estrada, among many others.

In 2005, he expressed alarm over the number of hospitals that closed in the last five years that greatly affected the health of the people especially those in the countryside. He therefore urged the government to set up a system where hospitals can recruit medical professionals to fill up the positions of those who have left for abroad. During the 26th national convention late last year, no less than a national daily has hailed Dr. Chang for spearheading the PHAP in getting out of their way to provide higher-level medical services to a growing population despite the hard times and the burden of sharing of materials and professional resource base to enhance tertiary health care.

LEE

Right after graduation from the University of Sto. Tomas in 1991, with a degree in Business Administration, young Wilbert Lee went home and saw the need to improve the family-owned Goodluck Trading. In a bold move in 1992, he initiated the purchase of rights of adjacent commercial spaces and negotiated for longer lease terms with building owners. Since then Goodluck Trading transformed from a small retail store to the biggest department store in Sorsogon.

He then established the LKY Development Corp. to spearhead the family’s property development ventures and explored a first in real estate development: he constructed to operate a 2-storey commercial building under a build-operate and long term agreement with the Catholic Church in Sorsogon over a portion of the lot covered by the Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral.

When many believed that his province was not yet ready for the fastfood lifestyle in 1997, he went on to introduce Jollibee and Chowking in Sorsogon. He soon put up more outlets in Naga and Tabaco which paved the way for Chowking Foods Corp. to entrust Lee’s company with more franchise outlets within the Bicol area and Metro Manila. It will soon open more outlets in Daet, Iriga, Daraga, Masbate, Virac, and one more in Naga.

LKY Corp., with its various major projects, has also put up City Life Square which is located in the busy intersection of Quezon and Araneta Avenues in Quezon City. It is a strip mall that houses a good mix of food and beverage outlets, entertainment, and a variety of retail and service outlets.

Hi Matt and friends ...

I learn what happen in the MNCF forum. I talk to the person itself.
The real purpose of the MNCF is to help poor people and children get into school with scholarship, the problem is no one likes to help/serve to achieve the goal. maybe everybody has it's personal agendas.
About the MNCF funds is still intact, nobody can withdraw that amount, unless the person comes home.
There are some members of MNCF has a personal intention, and just using the MNCF for her/his purpose. That is why the Admin have the forum closed.

And there is a political group would like to use the MNCF funds for their ends.
and use the name of MNCF.

Sa Cityhall, The Mayor is very supportive to that person and it's MNCF goals. but the other political opposition group are also trying to block the purpose of MNCF. :bash:

But it will be active again, upon arrival.

Okey, me too, citizen of the world. Hahahaha...
I really like Europe and stayed in Essex, UK and Auckland, New Zealand.

Bichara is still there, but only one cinema at the 3rd. floor. The ground and second floor is tranformed into shops. parang small type mall.

The Bichara's know that they need to transformed their business from Cinema into a small type mall for leasing. Same with Emily theater at the ground floor. And the Advent theater in the future..

Kumusta anong nangyari sa lakaw mo sa Iriga last 1995?

At least you have a strong self confidence keep it up :) .

By the way Dex, Do you have relatives in Naga? i know some family in Barlin St.

The City Government of Naga and the Kabalikat 645 Naga Central spearhead the Tabang Bulusan ’06, a relief operation for the victims and survivors of Mt. Bulusan eruption in Sorsogon province, particularly in the towns of Casiguran, Juban and Irosin.

Coordinating all the multi-pronged relief efforts is Kabalikat 645 president, D.C. Nathan Sergio, in close contact with the Office of the Civil Defense, the Provincial Government of Sorsogon, KB chapters (104, 167, 349, 40 and 430 and NCR) and LGU-Pili, Iriga City and the recipient towns.

Other participating groups and agencies include the KBP Cam Sur, the Division of Public Schools, the Naga City Public Market Stallholders, the Association of Sorsogueños and fully supported by Naga-based big business establishments, private schools, national government agencies, civic clubs and individual donors/sponsors.

According to Nathan Sergio, the Office of the Civil Defense prefer donations that are non-food items like gas masks, anti-venom vaccines, water containers, blankets, clothing, burnt ointment, soap, utencils, towels, nebulizers and medicines for upper respiratory tract diseases.

“Bottled mineral water and food items such as rice, biscuits, cookies, dried fish, dried fruits are also welcome,” said Mr. Sergio as he revealed that a convoy will be transporting the donated items on July 1 dropping by Pili and Iriga City on the way to Albay and finally Sorsogon.

For those interested to help the Bulusan eruption victims, you can call at the Office of the City Mayor (54) 4732055, 4732240 and 8111286 or at the KB 645 Action Center (54) 4737780.

Starmark II: yup, it already opened but its not like what a regular resto is, not even a resto!!...its just like a party venue for wedding receptions, debuts, conferences and the likes....you will have to rent for the whole place to use their facilities....maybe when u passed there wala occassion, that's why akala mo close......the place is really nice and the landscaping is beautiful....it also has a greek style architecture...

cobbs resto: the restaurant is already closed. and i don't have any idea what is the owners plan bout it...the renovations that you saw when u passed there were for club8 which was at the second floor na unfortunately pinaclose ng city, don't knw the exact reason...
they are renovating the place maybe for its re-opening...

bout the question about me being in those pics: SECRET!!!! hehehehehehe!! some of the girls there where my freinds, some are schoolmates and some i don't knw them at all.... actually i just got the pics from a website...

Hi Nikki,

Thanks for the information, now i know about the Starmark Royale (your right Kevin). I was thinking it's the same with the original Starmark.

The building where Cobb resto situated is owned By Arch. Manalang(which we know). There is no problem if he keeps on changing business est. there, anyway not only he is very rich but also close to Pres Gloria. :)

The Producers Bank has just open, I really like the interior design and glasses outside. Located next to Banco Filipino going to the Old GSIS building.

It's 50th bank in Naga that open's as far as i know.

This coming 3rd week of July. Banco De Oro 2nd branch will open in Gen. Luna st. which is formerly occupied by Nehrus Dept store and originally Yeebros dept store.
This will be the 51st bank to open

The previous bank that open, was Asian United Limited bank(48th bank) loc. @ the front of E Mall and Philippine farmers bank (49th) located at Brgy. Tabuco.

It is a requirement by the Banco Sentral ng Pilipinas that every bank (from Drift to Universal Bank) must meet the required savings/ current deposit inorder to operate, even their main target is the loan porpolio in Naga. So that people will be encourage to save money.

Have a nice day everybody, just busy with my study and paper works sa school.

it's nice..but i haven't been to Iriga's park..the monument of Rizal and the flag poles remind of Luneta park..parang miniature.. :D

the giant chessboard in plaza rizal is still there..i havn't got any chance to play that thingy though.. :D
the debates in the gazebo are always on the go..especially for the older ones..it's fun to watch the debates 'coz it's informal and the way they act..they look like little children fighting whoever between superman and batman is better..

1. The street just across U.S.I. and Naga Metropolitan Cathedral, is that what you mean? It's Elias Angeles St.

2. Street where Mc Donalds, KFC, Pizza Hut and Jollibee located?
Still Elias Angeles St.

3. at the end/start of E. Angeles St. is already the busy Caceres St. (before we called it Padian st. -was once the seminary located. now occupied already by a Computer school, Pawshop(in one building) and a store of pirated CD.s ) and the other end are also the divison of 2 streets Bagumbayan and Jacob Sts.(front of U.S.I.)

I hope this is the Street your referring too.

That street was name after our local hero Elias Angeles.

Elias Angeles was one of the Quince Martires during the Spanish Colonialization.
I'm not pretty sure if he was executed in that same place where the plaza is located or in Manila.

For more information, just contact Danny Gerona. :)

I was born here in Naga, but i can't memorize the name of other streets and i never been to some places here. :)

GMA Network Inc. increases its capital expenditures allotment mainly to finance its domestic and international expansion in 2006.

The company is setting aside P900 million for its expansion plans, P400 million more than the P500 million it allotted last year.

GMA Network Atty. Felipe L. Gozon said around P700 million of the funds will be used for the construction of two studios near its headquarters on EDSA and for its provincial expansion.

Gozon said the new studios, where P500 million will go, are being built to house offices that can accommodate 1,000 people. He added that the bidding specifications for the construction of the project will be made public this month.

For its provincial expansion, GMA Network will be putting up originating stations in Naga and Dagupan as well as network buildings in Davao, Cebu and Iloilo.

For its international operations, GMA Network recently received a certificate from the Canadian government allowing it to air PinoyTV in that country.

Gozon said that GMA may soon air in Canada within the first half of the year. It is currently in the process of looking for a local carrier.

Other international destinations that GMA Network plans to reach within this year include Europe, Hong Kong and Australia.

The network earlier signed a deal with cable TV and broadband company Wave Broadband to air PinoyTV in Cerritos in Los Angeles County.

Wave Broadband, the new cable TV and broadband company serving the City of Cerritos, has been airing PinoyTV on Channel 505 since March 9.

PEÑAFRANCIA 2006
Bicol provinces, cities in festival showdown

PREPARATIONS for the 2006 Peñafrancia fiesta are up as Naga City Mayor Jesse M. Robredo convened the Peñafrancia Festival Executive Council to map out plans and programs for the upcoming festivities in September, this year.

With Robredo as honorary chairperson and Vice Mayor Gabriel H. Bordado as honorary co-chairperson, the city mayor last June 28, 2006 issued an executive order reconstituting the composition of the council and its steering committees.

Metro Peso Manager Jun Mongoso has been appointed chief executive officer, with city councilors John Bongat, Nene de Asis and Lourdes Asence, M.D, along with Joe Perez, Lito del Rosario and Casper Nathan Sergio as executive council members.

A meeting will be held on Friday, July 7, at 9 a.m. at the Vice- Mayor’s Office to start up the spadework for Bicol’s biggest regional fiesta celebration.

In Legazpi City last July 4, Tourism Regional Director Nini Ravanilla met with all the tourism officers of the 6 provinces and 7 cities of the region to finalize plans for the Gayon Bicol streetdancing competition that will be held in Naga City as one of the highlights of the Peñafrancia festivities.

This is the second time that the regional streetdancing competition will be held in the city since its maiden run last year when Naga hosted the Gayon Bicol regional cultural and trade fair.

Ravanilla said that the annual weeklong regional shows that used to be held in Intramuros, Manila on specific months and in selected regional sites have been scrapped by the Department of Tourism, except for the regional festivals such as the Sinulog in Cebu, the Dinagyang in Iloilo, the Maskara in Bacolod, and the Flower Festival in Baguio. Likewise, DOT chose to retain the Gayon Bicol streetdancing competition in Naga during the Peñafrancia festivities as a regional tourism and cultural showcase for Bicol, Ravanilla said.

She said the regional streetdancing competition has been retained thru representation by Mayor Robredo who eagerly expressed his desire to host the regional competition which will henceforth be adopted as a major fare of the Peñafrancia fiesta.

In her letter to Mayor Robredo, Ravanilla said “the staging of the Gayon Bicol Fiesta in Naga City last year was a tremendous success… The DOT officials who were present were truly impressed by the hoards of visitors, pilgrims and devotees who witnessed the event and most of all the religious celebration honoring the patroness of the Bicol region – Our Lady of Peñafrancia.”

The streetdancing competition will feature all the 13 major festivals in Bicol which shall be interpreted by contingents from the 6 provinces and 7 cities in the region, Joe Perez of the Naga City Visitors Center said.

He explained each contingent will be composed of 100 dancers, excluding a maximum number of 40 parading musicians in their colorful ethnic costumes and accessories.

The grand prize winner will go home with P300,000 cash and P200,000 and P100,000 for the second and third prize winners, respectively.

Hi Nikki,

Yes, the GMA station is already existing, they run a radio station both AM and FM, but not a local GMA TV news station. ABS-CBN local news already existing before GMA station.

ABS- CBN radio station was established around the 1960's under a different name but owned by the Lopez group of company. It was closed during the Marcos martial Law period.

GMA Naga was running 10 years already. It's located at the DMG bldg. sa 5th floor. At San Francisco Ave..

But if it's true. they will have a new big space in Naga, just like the ABS-CBN station in Panganiban St.

Right now they are still renting in DMG Bldg. along San Francisco Avenue.

an originating station is like an extension office of a TV or radio station which has broadcast all over the country..

‘Super region’ infra to cost P300 billion

By Irene R. Sino-Cruz

Published on Page A21 of the July 17, 2006 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer

CEBU CITY—Infrastructure requirements for the five-year development of Central Philippines could reach P300 billion, according to Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Romulo L. Neri.

Neri, who was interviewed after the joint Regional Development Council (RDC) and Cabinet meeting held on July 7 at the Malacañang sa Sugbo here, said part of the amount would come from the government and the rest from the private sector through a build-operate-transfer scheme.

He could not say, however, how much of the amount would come from the government. The key infrastructure projects for Central Philippines include construction or rehabilitation of roads, ports, airports, power, irrigation and flood control projects, Neri said.

During the opening of the joint RDC-Cabinet meeting, President Macapagal-Arroyo identified Central Philippines—composed of the Visayas, Bicol, Palawan and Romblon, Camiguin and the Mindanao islands of Dapitan and Siargao—as the tourism center of the Philippines.

The President said the government must increase investments in education and infrastructure to make Central Philippines the tourism hub.

“To their competitive advantage, we will bolster education, invest in infrastructure and encourage greater tourism investments and business process outsourcing in Cebu and its immediate neighbors, like Dumaguete,” Ms Arroyo said.

During the RDC-Cabinet meeting, Neri said the national government identified several strategies for Central Philippines.

These include harnessing the vast coastal and marine resources and addressing the small islands’ fragile ecosystem; linking the islands through efficient transportation and communication facilities; promoting the Southern Tourism Center; developing the potentials of agribusiness, export and small and medium enterprises; pursuing responsible mining and quarrying; optimizing power potentials and ensuring adequacy and sustainability of the supply; and enhancing social services.

During a presentation on Central Philippines, Neri noted that the region accounted for 39 percent of the country’s total coastline. It has several rich fishing grounds, such as the Visayan Sea, Lamon Bay, Lagonoy Gulf, Romblon Pass, Bohol Sea, Sibuyan Sea, Iloilo Strait, Tañon Strait, Samar Sea and Leyte Gulf.

The Central Philippines’ share in the country’s total fish production is 37 percent.

The government is also proposing the establishment of mariculture parks in the super region. Mariculture is the cultivation of marine organisms for food.

In addition to the 10 existing parks, the government plans to set up mariculture parks in Samar, Camotes Island in Cebu, Bohol, Negros and Palawan.

Central Philippines also contributes 20.8 percent of gross domestic product, he added. Its growth centers include Metro Naga, Metro Legazpi, Metro Tacloban, the cities of Puerto Princesa, Iloilo, Bacolod, Dumaguete and Tagbilaran, and Metro Cebu.

The national government also plans to improve the linkages of the existing nautical highway by developing or rehabilitating lateral roads that connect to existing or proposed ports with roll-on, roll off facilities.

The implementation of the various infrastructure projects is expected to reduce travel time from Mindanao through Visayas to Luzon, and vice versa, by 10 hours.

A TECHNOLOGY park sits on a five-hectare piece of property in the heart of Camarines Sur and the province’s governor sees it as the next information and technology hub in the Asia Pacific.

The Camarines Sur Information Technology Park was built in 2005 and received a special economic zone status from the Philippine Special Economic Zone Authority (Peza) in March of the same year.

It was the first LGU-run and operated IT park in the country to receive such a status.

According to materials provided by the office of Gov. Lray Villafuerte, the IT park has an existing call center building which has a 400-seat capacity, an animation center, a training center for English proficiency and housing facilities for senior executives and staff.

It uses fiber optic technology and is equipped with two E-1 lines for quick Internet and network services.

Recently, two top executives of Dell Phils. went on a tour of the park upon the invitation of the provincial government.

They inspected the facilities and equipment at the IT park and also conducted a series of conferences with provincial officials led by Villafuerte and representatives of two Philippine telecommunications firms.

The two executives also observed the actual conduct of an English proficiency training program session and talked to the program’s students and trainers.

“The results of our talks with the Dell executives whom we took on the tour were certainly positive and very encouraging. We also got a positive reception during our promotional tour in the United States,” Villafuerte said in a statement.

The successful entrepreneur-turned-public official also pointed out that aside from the superior facilities of the IT park, his province enjoys several advantages that would enable them to compete on a global scale. Camarines Sur, he pointed out, is considered the educational center of Bicol, with top-notch educational institutions such as the Ateneo de Naga, Nueva Caceres and Sta. Isabelle.

The province has competitive labor costs and is accessible by air with regular flights by Philippine Airlines and Air Philippines. It is also accessible by land with a network of well-maintained highways and roads from Metro Manila.

“There is so much potential for global competitiveness in the IT sector for the Philippines in general and Camarines Sur in particular. If Bangalore in India was able to transform itself into a major global IT hub, I don’t see any reason why we cannot do the same for our province,” said Villafuerte.

“We have established the necessary infrastructure and we have started ramping up the capability of our manpower pool. I believe it’s just a matter of time before we become a major player.”

NAGA CITY -- The Philippines and China have signed a memorandum of understanding that would lead to rehabilitation and upgrade of the railway and its extension from Calamba town, south of Manila, to Matnog town in the southeastern province of Sorsogon.

The document binds the two governments to rehabilitate and upgrade the railroad, bridges and bends for faster, safer and efficient train service from the Southern Tagalog region over 542 kilometers to the Matnog Ferry Terminal, a gateway to the Visayas and Mindanao.

The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) and China's Ministry of Commerce signed the document. Both governments will appoint companies or organizations to do the project.

China agreed to provide concessional loans for extending the railway to Matnog, more than 100 kilometers from a Legazpi City junction where the south railway currently ends.

To track and review the project performance at any time, the two governments agreed to create a Philippine-China Economic Joint Working Group, which will be chaired by the NEDA.

It is also through this joint working group that the two governments will consult with each other on issues that may arise during project implementation. Juan Escandor Jr., with INQ7.net

Hi Kevin and Nikki,

It's been a long time
Well tama ka, Metromall bldg was acquired by Romeo Tan from the Abella's. But what i learn from the Chinese community is, it will be rented by LCC from R. Tan. It will be a commercial space soon. Ma position ang LCC sa centro. That is what i heard from them.

About the MacDonalds in General Luna - well it's the first McDonald in the bicol region. I forgot the exact year, when they open there. kaya sadit lang baga kadto. ma expand sinda.

I hope they will make a very beautiful interior design kang Mc. Donald, coz, i have been to other european Mc. Donald branches- pig re- relate ninda si interior design base on the popularity of their place. like sa spain ang mc donalds duman may design man kang mga paintings ni Picasso sa laog kang Mc. Donalds interior.

I hope digdi man sa naga may different sytle kang interior like the penafrancia and about the history kang Naga City, sana arog man kaiyan sato.

The Philippine Amateur Swimming Association (PASA) will launch a nationwide tournament dubbed as “Pilipinas Youth Swimming Cup” starting in September to broaden the sport’s base and strengthen its grassroots program.

PASA President Mark Joseph said the tournament would be the answer to the sport’s No. 1 problem: Lack of upcoming players.

Most of the swimmers that had made waves in regional tournaments mostly came from the US.

“We need more discoveries these days to widen our base in swimming and increase our chances of winning in international tournaments,” Joseph said.

The event is open to all regional clubs registered in PASA with swimmers aged seven to 18 years old.

Joseph is optimistic that at least 3,000 tankers will participate in the event that will kick off simultaneously at the Rizal Memorial Swimming Pool, Panaad Sports Complex in Bacolod City and Acharon Sports Complex in Gen. Santos City.

Winners in the sub-regional tournaments will advance to the Regional Finals scheduled on Oct. 7-8 in Naga City for Luzon, Cebu City for Visayas and Zamboanga City for Mindanao.

The top 200-250 swimmers in the second stage will then compete in the Finals.
In last year’s SEA Games, the national swimming team collected only four gold, five silver and six bronze medals. The big bulk of it came from the impressive effort of US-based swimmers Miguel Molina and Miguel Mendoza.

Hi Kevin,
It will be a commercial building for retail dept. just like LCC mall, i just don't know if the interior will be handle by LCC management.

Romeo Tan the owner of the lot and building will probably have it least to LCC.

Nice Photos guys! I'm thanking everyone for those really nice contributions of photos.

I just realize 1992 pa pala yung last time I was in Naga. I would be in shock the next time I visited this city. Mukhang maliligaw na ako dyan.

Abah! at may fast-food courts na. :okay:

It's already 9 years old.... It really needs a facelift and a major renovation to keep the customers coming back.... Now that SM is coming in it would be a major threat to LCC... That's why they have to do something or else...... :)

You're welcome, Mat...LCC has only 1 level but some shops has two levels.... Fortunately, the guards hadn't noticed me because they thought I'm just texting...Hehehe
:D thanks garzland.
i dont get why they made lcc just a single level mall.
looking at it from the outside it might very well be a 2 or 3 level structure... :dunno:
anyway, any shots if Bichara center :D ?
it was the last place i went to when i was in naga

July 29th, 2006, 06:30 AM
Ok... As you wish Matt, I can take pictures of it since I'll be hanging out there...

Yeah, it would look cool if they made LCC a 2-level mall... A single level is quite boring..... I hope they have plans to renovate it and expand it to 2 levels.

how about pacific mall?any news about it? :D

Yeah, it would look cool if they made LCC a 2-level mall... A single level is quite boring..... I hope they have plans to renovate it and expand it to 2 levels.
yep..so boring..i'd rather be in eMall than in LCC..even eMall has a smaller GFA compared to LCC, eMall has 4floors..so not quite boring..SM!SM!SM!when will you really be here? :(

^^Umm, what's the proximity of the proposed SM to this LCC mall?
it's not really far..when you're at LCC, a pedicab ride plus a tricycle ride can take you to the proposed SM..if not, two ticycle rides.. :)
