Yes, Seven Eleven would start construction next year.

Magsaysay Branch will be located at Cereza at the space occupied by Kopi Roti. I don't know what would happen to the coffee shop if they will close it down or move somewhere else as there are still a lot of space left at the said lifestyle center. I will have to ask Mr. Lo about it.

You guys will be so surprised who the Bicolano Frachisee of a total of 18 stores, seven of which will be located in Naga as they are also operating popular convenience stores in Bicol and in Manila. Unfortunately I could not name names.

Don't wonder why if they allow Seven Eleven (and hold your breath guys Wendy's which is 7-11's sister company) to occupy a large building in Centro used to be occupied by a popular fastfood chain...

It's a local secret and people flock to taste her one of a kind noodle from breakfast to merienda. She's been serving kinalas for the longest time and there's a story that the building beside the eatery is hers, but has been unfinished for years now ( because all 5 of her sons who are addicted to drugs steal from the eatery's earnings ). Now, she has helpers to do the serving and she just computes and handles the money.

Next time you are in Naga, be sure to try this local delicacy

Kinalas / Luglog, just like the tagalog word "kalas", refers to the "fall off the bone" meat that is placed on top of the noodles.The soup is the broth of beef bone and bone marrow ( sometimes skull and brain included) or what Manileños call "bulalo". Noodles are the typical pancit mami, with bits of fried garlic and chopped leeks with the meat on top. Condiments are available in the table to be used according to your liking.

It's a nice thing to know that eateries in the province still follow an honesty system rule. Breads, bananas, and desserts
are placed in the table and the customer is at liberty to get as much as he wants and honestly pays for it after.

As part of the university celebration of the feast day of St. Francis Xavier, the College Athletics Office invites you to participate in the University Fun Run on 30 November 2010 at 5:00 AM.

The Schedule is as follows:

Get to meet, chat and interact with the very first Filipino to be awarded the prestigious Emmy award for an episode he worked on for The Simpsons.

Through a special webinar session, Jess will impart with everyone the creative process that they follow in producing The Simpsons, the best practices in animation in the US, and the emerging standards and trends in the animation industry. He will also inspire and share with everyone his experiences working with the different studios in America, and the many other Filipino talents in animation working there.

Join multi-awarded animator Jess Española in this limited engagement, and discover industry trade secrets and learn from one of the finest Filipino animators that has brought pride to the country.

Jesus “Jess” Española is a Filipino animator based in the United States. Back in his younger days, Jess managed to stay at the top of his class during his elementary years and was admitted as a scholar at the University of the Philippines (UP) where he enrolled in the College of Fine Arts, major in painting and studio arts. Aside from the grant he received from the UP Fine Arts Alumni Foundation and Melquiades M. Castro Scholarship Foundation, he also supported himself by working part-time until he was able to complete his degree in 1984.

His early stint in animation began in 1985 at Burbank Animation Inc. as an in-betweener, clean up artist, and animator. In 1988, he became an animation group leader and key animator of the Hanna-Barbera subsidiary Fil-Cartoons Inc. in Pasig for several television shows.

In 1994, he moved to Los Angeles, California with his family and achieved permanent United States residency status for being a “person with exceptional ability.” From 1995 to 1997, Española worked on CD-Rom game/edutainment at 7th Level Inc., a combination of traditional animation and computer technology.

In 1997 he worked at Film Roman, Inc. as character layout artist and assistant director for King of the Hill. He was hired as an assistant director for Rough Draft, Inc., working on the animated television series Futurama in 1998 for 20th Century Fox Television Network.


In 2002, Futurama was awarded an Emmy for the episode "Roswell That Ends Well," but Jess was not yet cited for this because at that time, assistant directors were not yet included in the awarding.

When Fox TV stopped producing Futurama, Jess went back to Film Roman (now Starz Film Roman) in 2003 and applied for a character layout position. Then in 2006, he was given an assistant director position for one of the longest running TV series in America, The Simpsons.

Things began to change when two years later, he became known as the first Filipino to receive a prestigious recognition from the 60th annual Creative Arts Emmy Awards for his work as assistant director in The Simpsons episode entitled "Eternal Moonshine of the Simpson Mind," which won "Outstanding Animated Program (for programming less than one hour)" in 2008.

with Fil in the photo is "Tiya Lil", Dr Maria Lilia Realubit,PhD, long-time professor at the University of the Philippines Dept of Comparative Literature. A Naguena, she is an alumna of the Univ de Sta Isabel but has spent practically all of her professional life at the State U.

She is a true Bikolista and has done extensive research and writing on Bikol culture and literature. Among her published works are "Bikols of the Philippines" and the CCP Anthology of Contemporary Bikol Writing (as editor).

Yung taxi cab driver na nakuha namin pabalik sa Naga from CWC, sabi sa amin eh kagagaling lang nya from Legazpi. Hinire daw sya ng isang pamilyang Ruso na mag-tour sa Albay. :D

Sa Legazpi, we hired a private car to take us around Legazpi and Sorsogon. Ang charge sa amin kapag provincial tour lang ng Albay ay P2,500 (whole day na yun). Yung trip naman sa Sorsogon, they charged us P3,500 plus gasoline expenses. Sabi nung driver, madami din na nagha-hire sa kanila para sa trip to CWC and CamSur. So I guess, lahat sa Bicolandia nagbe-benefit sa mga foreign and domestic tourists like me. Lahat nabibiyayaan. So sana magtulungan pa lalo ang mga taga-Bicol para lalong umunlad ang region nyo. :D

AdNU Co-Hosts Animahenasyon 2010

The Ateneo de Naga University is honored to co-host this year`s biggest animation event in the Philippines: Animahenasyon 2010. This is also the first time that the festival is held outside Manila. The opening of the event was held on 23 November 2010.

Growing Industry
Guests from various schools and animation companies all over the country gathered together at the Arrupe Convention Hall to celebrate the opening ceremonies. The event was graced by the presence Hon. John Bongat, Mayor of Naga City, who shared about the growing number of talented digital artists in the city. Atty. Ivan John Uy, Chairman of the Commission on Information and Communications Technology, was also present to share with the crowd the good news of our thriving animation industry and its critical contribution to our national economy.

Lifetime Achievement Award
It was also during this opening that Ricky Orellana, Festival Programmer, introduced to the crowd this year`s Lifetime Achievement awardee, Roque Federizon Lee (popularly known as “Roxlee”), who is a distinguished Filipino artist from Naga City. Known for his famous comic strip Cesar Asar, Roxlee is also a skilled animator (he is, in fact, a local pioneer of independent film animation) and painter. His works are currently displayed in an exhibit titled “Planet of the Noses” at the Arrupe Convention Hall.

Depth and Imagination
Fr. Joel Tabora, SJ, University President, reiterated the importance of depth and imagination in his Welcoming Speech, citing the challenge addressed by Fr. General Adolfo Nicolas regarding the “globalization of superficiality.” He also thanked the Animation Council of the Philippines (ACP) for their continuing support and promotion of our local animation industry.

Animahenasyon is an annual Filipino animation festival that features the different animation works of both aspiring and professional animators in the country through a competition. 5 Ateneans Represent Filipino Students in National Youth Parliament

The National Youth Commission, Office of the President, selected five students from the Ateneo de Naga University to represent in-school youths of the country in the 8th National Youth Parliament on 5-8 November in Butuan City, Agusan del Norte.

They are: Angeline Rose Alferez, BSBA Computer Management and Accounting; Maria Christina Gumba, AB Political Science; Romuel Imperial, BS Electronics and Communications Engineering; Monica Palomares,AB Development Communications; and Arcci Relloso, BSBA Business Management Honors Program.

This year’s number of ADNU delegates in the NYP is the highest recorded so far. ADNU has had five delegates in previous Parliaments combined.

The NYP this year bannered the theme: Kabataan: Ako ang Pagbabago, resonating the popular call of the newly installed government and the clamour of the people for change, and tapping the energy of the youth to facilitate the change.

With youths representing various subsectors and geographical groupings in the country, the ADNU participants contributed to the formulation, discussion and passage of resolutions which responds to some youth issues and problems like the improvement of the Sangguniang Kabataan, the upgrading of the public school system and the protection of the environment. Their outputs now form part of the government’s legislative and executive agenda for youth development.

Now back at ADNU, the five students are expected to echo the experiences that they have gained from the Parliament to their own organizations and communities, and to maintain linkages with the other youth leaders and organizations to effectively carry out their resolutions.

USI Blesses New Chapel: A Dream Come True

“You should have a dream, if you don’t have a dream, how do you make a dream come true…” goes the lines of a song from the Broadway play, “South Pacific”

November 17, 2010 at 4:00 o’clock in the afternoon was the blessing and inauguration of the new USI chapel, located at the near end of the University paranymphus by the old (newly refurbished) Christ the King statue fronting Jacob gate.

Indeed – from nothing – rose a beautiful reality: the new University chapel. Correction, it was not from nothing, it was from a dream of the USI President, Sr. Ma. Asuncion G. Evidente, DC that the new University chapel now stands. From the first peso, sustained by a strong faith, dogged perseverance, thankful support (at times economically painful) of friends, benefactors, generous alumni, the USI community, the USI President slowly but surely enfleshed her dream. Truly, USI is lucky to have a visionary, daring a cornucopia of odds, tenaciously pursuing her goals.

Archbishop Leonardo Z. Legazpi, O.P., D.D., who planted the seeds of the dream, blessed the chapel and said the first mass with the attending Monsigñori and priests. The USI community and friends were at hand, happily gracing the occasion. (Pls. read the USI President’s message in this website for a more detailed description of the chapel.)

Skating the rails of Naga City to CWC
1 NOVEMBER 2010

It was an experience worth taking: a trip from Naga City to CWC, world class wakeboarding and water sports facilities via skates, a wooden and motorized contraption that transports people and goods using extant rails. Much like the ones seen in several parts in Manila.

I was intrigued with riding one than taking the usual bus or jeepney or even the taxi which takes passengers to the wakeboarding venue for P250. But I was informed beforehand: be adviced that you might pay a premium, when asking to be taken to Pili. From the downtown area, I rode a jeepney and went down Concepcion where one can board the skates.

P100, the driver told me for a trip to Barangay Catmon, Miloar, the drop off point where I can get a motor to the venue which is less than a kilometer away. I obliged. Never mind the rather steep cost but it was something to look forward to.

The trip took me around 45 minutes but the rural views were a great change from the usual highways and drab structures along the way and evading the many vehicles. We passed fields made golden by ripening rice and power pylons lording the paddies. Impressive views of Mt. Isarog looming in the background. Just stunning.

Whenever we encounter another skate, there’s even a protocol being followed: the one with the lowest capacity should give way. Giving way means going down, carting the skate to the side and when the other passed, put back again and board. Simple life!

The route seemed endless with the rails stretching to the horizon. I wasn’t complaining. I enjoyed taking in the landscape, smiling and shooting. Never mind if it drizzled a little bit but I was just feeling free and happy. At Catmon, I went down and the driver turned his skate in the other direction and went ahead.

UNEP grad tops regional LET exams, enters national level
Legazpi City (24 November) -- Adding another feather to UNEP's cap is Anthony Cuba Vista's feat of making it as Regional Topnotcher and garnering one of the top five posts at the recently concluded Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) held in 15 testing centers all over the Philippines on September 26, 2010.

Vista, garnering 84.40 percent, two (2) points short from the topnotcher's score, was among the successful examinees who made it on the top ten. Vista landed 5th place.

Other UNEP Education graduates who made it on the list as new elementary teachers include Dahlia R. Galvan, Rechel M. Gulpe, Melanie O. Mamano, Jovie R. Prades, Lilian C. Rosalinas and Anthony C. Vista while Jecel L. Jesoro and Amado L. Niebres Jr. were added to the list of new secondary teachers.

Vista, together with other UNEP LET Passers were among the 7, 737 elementary teachers out of 39, 508 examinees, barely 19.58%, of those who passed the recent LET Examinations. Their names were released by the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC) on November 16, 2010.

Twenty-five percent of secondary school teachers who went through the examinations made it too, representing 9, 493 passers out of 36, 714 examinees who tried their luck as new breeds of educator.

UNEP President Atty. Remelisa Alfelor-Moraleda congratulated the triumphant examinees, citing their sacrifice and perseverance to emerge as passers after the grilling examinations.

"UNEP takes pride in every passer that our university is producing and will continue to produce. We look forward for more victorious feat that would give our students their rightful place as global achievers."

The Board of Professional Teachers is composed of Dr. Faith M. Bachiller as Chairman and Reynaldo T. Peña and Dr. Jesus L. Nieves as members.

Kinalas is comfort food. Brain slices optional

The first time I learned about kinalas, a popular noodle dish in Naga City, I was queasy. The thought of eating pork brain gives me goosebumps. It is one part of an animal that I avoid and kinalas is said to contain this organ.
Kailangan hot na hot (with chillies) para tumulo talaga pawis mo. (It should be with chillies so that you will really perspire)

I got curious, though, as Jojo, a friend’s friend was enthusiastic, raving is probably the proper term, of bringing us there during one gastronomic trip around the city. Off we went to one eatery reputed to be the best in this part of the region.

Kinalas refers to the meat which is removed (thus, kalas) from skinned and boiled pork’s head cut in half. It is laman (meat) stripped from that part. It has the typical noodles used in mami, a popular dish that is found around the country.

The broth is made from boiled pig bones and shoulder meat with scallions added into the bowl. Diners can have optional one boiled egg or crushed chicharon, crispy pork rind. And the brain? Luckily in Kinalas Twin, the place we visited, has it optional. Those who would want it can just get from another bowl. One other defining ingredient is the brown gravy that is doused on top before being served.

You always eat this with Coke, because you burp, Jojo said. Puto cheese, a kind of rice cake formed like a muffin with cheese on top is also a popular pair. There are several kinalas eateries around Naga City but the one we went to is preferred. It has been featured in newspaper and magazine articles. You won’t be disappointed.

Kinalas Twin is unassuming. The eatery is infront of an apartment along Dayangdang St. in the barangay of the same name. If not for the big board and its wide open entrance that gives a glimpse of the tables and chairs and patrons sitting, one would easily miss this one. From 3-5PM, expect the place to be full of patrons, coming and going while tricycles or private vehicles stopping once in a while to drop or pick up passengers.

I started experimenting my own version of the caldo (soup) in 1990. Kubo-kubo lang to dati, (When we started, it was just a place with native roofing materials) he added. When typhoon Unding struck in 2004, we transformed the place using durable materials and this is what you can see now.

Inside are eight tables with four plastic and backless chairs. At the far end is Edwin Rey, the owner who sits at his table serving as a counter. behind him is his apartment’s entrance. At the right, is another table where the cooking happens. It is clean with bowls in three sizes neatly stacked. A chopping board, bowls of noodles ready to be smothered in broth, a large vat in a slow boil as well as halved pork heads are in one part.

Kailangan hot na hot (with chillies) para tumulo talaga pawis mo. (It should be with chillies so that you will really perspire), Jojo said in between sips of cold coke and crushing siling labuyo (native peppers) with vinegar on a shallow container. When my steaming bowl arrived, I tasted the gravy. A bit salty for my taste but once it is mixed in, the taste is better.

I like noodle soup dishes not only for snacks or something to eat on a cold, rainy night, but it’s also filling as lunch or dinner. When I get to places, its one of those local food fare that I look for. Thus, kinalas is no exception.

The broth is not too salty, not too bland. Just the right seasoning that I need not add fish sauce but it is just so delicious. The noodles, like pasta, is al dente. But the meat, oh boy, the meat was just memorable. Very tender, very tasty. Home cooking at its best. While into my last spoonful of broth and bits of noodles and meat, I can’t just help but rave and praise it. It’s no wonder that people really come to this place.

Eating kinalas at Kinalas Twin is an experience. A memorable one. One that can leave you asking for more. With the ibos-ibos, these were two most memorable food experiences I had in Naga City. As I had my fill that night, sated and happy, I came back early the next morning to eat there again. It’s that good.

Kinalas Twin (+63 906 5021781) is located along Dayangdang St. in Barangay Dayangdang. From the downtown area, hail a tricycle and tell the driver to take you to the place which is quite famous. It is open 7 days a week starting at 6 AM until evening, Monday to Saturday and half day on Sundays. The place is crowded between 3-5 PM. You have three sizes to chose from: small, big and jumbo with prices ranging from P23 – P36. It’s that cheap. They also offer Pansit luglug but skip that one. Go for the real thing.

It's the gata cooked rice that makes the difference!

I was overwhelmed with its taste. A distantly familiar flavor exploding inside my mouth that I just have to close my eyes and revel in gustatory ecstasy. Ibos-ibos, a fusion rice concoction of a Filipino native delicacy at Chef Doy’s was one of two unforgettable food experiences I had in Naga City, Camarines Sur.

The familiar ibus is suman, sticky rice wrapped in strips of young coconut leaves and cooked in coconut extract. It is often seen in markets and outside churches on a Sunday in Metro Manila and in the Southern Tagalog region bundled up together and dangling from a vendor’s hand. Ibos-ibos at Chef Doy’s Gourmet Restaurant (+63 920 9825055, +63 54 4782519, chefdoy@yahoo.com, Facebook page), a cozy place at Cereza, a complex of cafes, bars and food places along Magsaysay Ave., Naga City’s rising lifestyle and dining strip, borrows from this cooking process.

The menu description was unpretentious but enough to pique my interest as anything other than water used to cook rice is something that always excites me.

It was really no accident that I came to this Filipino fusion restaurant. Jojo, a friend of my painter friend, Jon Ching, treated us to some food places that are a must when visiting Naga City and he was raving about Chef Doy (Leandro “Doy” Sto. Domingo), a langyaw who found his niche in this city.

We were there for dinner to sample their menu and had batang batang pusit, baby squid cooked in olive oil; pininyahang manok, chicken cooked with pinapple and other dishes. While scanning what was on offer, the ibos-ibos entry caught my eye and we ordered one paired with beef tapa.

The food was really good. Hands down. But it was the ibos-ibos that just blew me away. It stood out from the rest because of its delicate and creamy flavor. The subtle hint of gata gives it character. It reminded me of home in Cebu, of early morning breakfasts of puto and sweet, ripe mangoes downed with sikwate, a thick cocoa drink. That rice dish was just unforgettable. So unforgettable that I had to visit the following day for late lunch. It is so rare for me to just close my eyes and experience the food but this was just one of those special moments.

In my second visit, I paired ibos-ibos with pork adobo. Diners can also chose chicken bbq and daing na bangus but adobo is another favorite and I was curious of how it will jive with the rice.

An ibos-ibos dish also includes laing, trademark bicolano fare of dried taro leaves cooked in gata with chili. Slices of tomatoes and hard boiled egg at the side. The latter got me curious as I was expecting it to be salted eggs, which is more familiar.

The ibos-ibos doesn’t compete with the stronger flavors of the laing and pork adobo. It complements, delighting my palate. It just made my day.

Yung taxi cab driver na nakuha namin pabalik sa Naga from CWC, sabi sa amin eh kagagaling lang nya from Legazpi. Hinire daw sya ng isang pamilyang Ruso na mag-tour sa Albay. :D

Sa Legazpi, we hired a private car to take us around Legazpi and Sorsogon. Ang charge sa amin kapag provincial tour lang ng Albay ay P2,500 (whole day na yun). Yung trip naman sa Sorsogon, they charged us P3,500 plus gasoline expenses. Sabi nung driver, madami din na nagha-hire sa kanila para sa trip to CWC and CamSur. So I guess, lahat sa Bicolandia nagbe-benefit sa mga foreign and domestic tourists like me. Lahat nabibiyayaan. So sana magtulungan pa lalo ang mga taga-Bicol para lalong umunlad ang region nyo. :D

Our neighbor there in Naga whos son missed his flight hired a taxi from Pili airport to NAIA (to drop off her son) and then brought her back to Naga for i think PHP 14,000.00 just this year...originally the taxi was hired just to drop off both of them from Naga to Pili Airport...

If you hire them from Naga to Manila normally yata mga 10,000 to 12,000 back and forth... i dont know why she was charged PHP 14K...

MBC national choral competition draws season's best

MANILA, Philippines – The best choirs from local schools, parishes and community groups nationwide are set to face off and determine the season’s best as Manila Broadcasting Co. and Star City launch their Paskong Pinoy celebrations with the MBC National Choral Competition.

Following rigorous auditions conducted by its stations Love Radio, Yes-FM, Easy Rock, and Hot FM in Cauayan, Laoag, Baguio, Lucena, Naga, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, and Iloilo, MBC recently announced the roster of choirs that qualified for the semifinal round scheduled on December 6-9. .

A total of 90 choirs from all over the country auditioned in a three-month span which yielded a bumper crop of entries from Metro Manila, and equally outstanding participants from the regions.

The choral competition promises to be filled with excitement as the country’s most respected choral conductors take part in a showdown of the so-called crème-de-la-crème.

Determined to make choral music the latest craze in mass-based entertainment, MBC has asked the choirs to render one novelty song each apart from the designated contest piece, and to submit three additional elective works from which the judges will choose on the spot which number they would like the choir to sing. Participating choirs will then be judged according to musicality (40 percent), presentation (30 percent), and audience impact (30 percent).

Entries in the children’s choir division include Bagong Silangan Elementary School, Commonwealth ES, and the Quezon City Performing Arts Foundation; Laoag Central ES; Koro del Pilar of Malolos; the Voyagers of Pilgrim Christian College in Cagayan de Oro; Calasiao Children’s Chorus, Pasig Catholic College, Malate Catholic School, St Paul College of Paranaque; St Paul College Pasig; Juan Luna ES, Legarda ES, Coro Angelitos of Isabelo de los Reyes ES, and DSWD Mandaluyong’s Streetchildren Chorale. Three-time champion Hiyas ng Pilipinas has been elevated to the Hall of Fame.

School choirs vying for the top prize in the open category are led by Mapua Cardinal Singers, Koro San Benildo, FEU Chorale, De La Salle Universtiy-Dasmarinas, University of San Agustin Troubadours, St Louis University, Tarlac State University, John B. Lacson Maritime University, Lyceum Northwestern University of Dagupan, Tining – ang Koro ng Letran Calamba, the University of Manila, the Kalibnusan Chorale of Philippine Normal University-Alicia, Ilagan State University’s Rhythmic Society, Camarines Sur Polytechnic College, the University of Makati Chorale, Ateneo de Davao’s Carillon, University of Southeastern Philippines, St. Scholastica’s College High School Glee Club, and defending champion University of the Visayas.

Yep nakarating kami ng Bulusan at get this, kasagsagan ng eruption ng Mt. Bulusan nung nagdaan kami sa Irosin kaya yung kotse na hinire namin ay punong puno ng white ash! lol.. zero visibility nga nun sa ilang bahagi ng Irosin kaya dahan dahan lang pagmamaneho ng driver namin. :D

Thais capture Reef Asian Wakefest

PILI, Camarines Sur – Daniel Grant, a twelve-year-old-Thailander, international wakeboarding circles fondly call “The Turtle” proved that age is no impediment to making good at the wake park by clinching the open wakeskate championship and second place, Men’s pro, of the Reef Asian Wakefest 2010 held November 19 and 20 at the Camarines Sur Water Sports Complex (CWC).

Foreigners ruled the major wake events with another Thailander Tatsanai Kuakoonrat bagging the top men’s professional spot with a finals run score of 86.67 with “The Turtle” close at his heels with 83.33 followed by Kim Yong Il of Korea with 80.00 at third place and Russian Aleksandr Davidov who was rated 60.00 at fourth.

In the open wakeskate Daniel Grant, who was the youngest rider of the tournament, was decisive winner with an awesome score of 90, second place went to Filipino rider Chad Venadas with 80.00, third place to another Thailander Freddie Grove with 70.00, and fourth to another Filipino Robbie Britanico who scored 40.00.

Top three winners won US$1,000, US$800 and US$500 in the Men’s Professional and US$800, US$500 and US$300 in the open wakeskate.

Wakeboard and wakeskate riding naturally gravitated to Daniel Grant, the darling of the tournament, who says he was initiated into the wake sport when he started out on a skateboard at the age of three, graduated with his skateboarding chums to cable wake riding when he was about eight then just six months after he joined a competition and won the best young rider prize.

The young Turtle became a virtual wake riding addict after that, hanging out at the cable park practically every day learning from the veteran habitues and practicing his favorite tricks like the Frontslip to Blind, the Switch Mobe, Next Trick and KGB on the wakeboard and the Backside Bigspin, Frontside Flip, Next Trick and Backside Flip on the wakeskate to near perfection that have brought him to the forefront among the rising if not the best cable wake riders in the world today.

Naga student-journalists light candles, seek justice for Maguindanao victims

NAGA CITY --- Exactly a year after the gruesome mass killing in Maguindanao of 58 people, 38 of which were journalists, some 30 student-journalists and student-leaders gathered in this city to light candles and offer prayers for the souls of the departed and demand justice for their murder.

Wielding their placards and speaking out loud their sentiments, the student-journalists that represent the school organs of Universidad de Sta. Isabel and Ateneo de Naga University, together with city officials and employees, school heads and local newsmen, congregated at Plaza Quince Martires Tuesday to commemorate the infamous Nov. 23 massacre that further doomed the Philippines as the most dangerous place for media practitioners.

Naga City Mayor John Bongat shared his own thoughts on the Maguindanao Massacre at the beginning of the peaceful demonstration, saying that the gathering was not only meant for the 58 lives that perished there.

“We are here not just to commemorate the first year anniversary of the Ampatuan Massacre and to pray for the eternal repose of its victims’ souls. This gathering is also symbolic for all those other victims of crimes and their families who are still searching for justice for their loved ones,” Bongat stressed. “Our prayers here are not only for their souls. It is also for the families they left behind.”

Bongat added that the said event is meant to be one of the many activities all over the Philippines which would hopefully help the country in achieving its goal of attaining justice for all the Maguindanao Massacre victims which would ultimately lead to the development and change that every Filipino is yearning for.

Everyone offered a few moments of silence before white candles were lighted at the brick foundation of the monument for the fifteen martyrs of Bicol.

Earlier during the morning, at exactly seven, all radio and television stations in all corners of the country were asked to go off air for 58 seconds in memory of the 38 media practitioners and other victims who were mercilessly murdered and buried in Maguindanao after being abducted by a group of armed men who were said to be members of Mayor Andal Ampatuan Jr.’s private army. Subsequent investigations reveal that the said army was sent there by the politician to liquidate the convoy on their way to the local office of Comelec to file the certificate for candidacy of Gov. Esmael Mangudadatu, the Ampatuans’ political rival.

27 Xmas trees to light up Naga thoroughfare

NAGA CITY --- Twenty seven 15-inch-tall Christmas trees are expected to show their brilliance in this city during this coming Yuletide Season in connection with the Christmas tree-making contest among the 27 barangays in this city.

The contest, dubbed “Maliwanag Asin Makolor Na Pasko Sa Naga,” invites each participating barangay to present only one tall Christmas tree that will be displayed together with the other barangay entries along the busy Panganiban Drive, the city’s main thoroughfare that leads to the central business district.

According to Ruel Barrios, head of Lingkod Barangay which chairs the event, any lighting materials are allowed to be used as long as it will illuminate the tree in variant colors, highlighting Christmas decors that will enchant the eyes and spirit of those who pass by. No restriction on design, style and materials to be used was given in order for the participants to maximize their aesthetic taste and creativity.

Barrios said the public can anticipate having an eyeful of the tall festive trees starting December 1 when there will be simultaneous lighting at exactly 6 p.m.

Five lucky winners will be chosen from among the participating entries with cash prizes of P500,000 (1st prize), P300,000 (2nd prize), P200,000 (3rd prize), P100,000 (4th prize), P50,000 (5th prize) that will eventually be expended for projects of winning barangays.

All non-winning participants will be doled out with P25,000 worth of projects each as consolation prize.

Judging will be on Dec. 15 and 30 under the following criteria: creativity, lighting effect, originality and over-all presentation. Winners will be announced on January next year.

IN a bid to hasten the growth of the local animation industry, the Animation Council of the Philippines, Inc. (ACPI) is bringing its 4th annual Philippine Animation Festival called Animahenasyon to Bicol, particularly Naga City —one of several emerging talent hotspots for this sunshine industry.

Animahenasyon is the flagship project of ACPI and seeks to build an audience base, increase their awareness, and showcase original Filipino animated works through a multi-category competition for both aspiring and professional animators in the country.

This year, Animahenasyon is co-presented by Ateneo de Naga University and is being held in this premier 3D animation school that’s among the first institutions to offer an undergraduate course, major in digital illustration and animation. More than 500 participants are expected to grace the event as it reels off from November 23 to 26 with almost 150 entries competing for the various competition categories.

“Holding Animahenasyon in Naga City represents a step forward in tapping the huge potential of Filipino animators beyond Metro Manila,” says ACPI executive director Michael Kho Lim. “There is a lot of untapped and unrecognized talent out there, and it’s time for them to be given due recognition and support.”

This is the first time that ACPI is holding Animahenasyon outside Manila. “It’s quite a challenge for us to hold the festival in Naga because of the logistical requirements,” explains Grace Dimaranan, Animahenasyon 2010 festival director and ACPI board member. “But we still took on the challenge since one of our thrusts is to strengthen the regional animation of the country, and this is also part of ACPI’s yearlong 10th anniversary celebration.”

Aside from the screening of this year’s competing animated entries, Animahenasyon 2010 will also have a special exhibition program from Japan’s Media Arts Festival and the best works from Gobelins L’ecole de L’image in Paris, one of the world’s best animation schools.

As Naga City positions itself as a major animation hub in the country, the local government and Naga City Investment Board is hosting a free public night screening of the winning works of Animahenasyon 2007-2009 at Plaza Quezon in downtown from November 23 to 25.

Also part of the festival is the conference exploring the areas of education, production, technology and entrepreneurship in animation. Opening the conference is Eric Riewer, chair of the animation department of Gobelins L’ecole de L’image. Other renowned speakers include Jess Española, the first Filipino ever to win an Emmy for an episode he did for one of the longest running and best loved US animated series “The Simpsons.”

An exhibit on the life and works of this year’s lifetime achievement awardee is also in place. This year’s recipient is cartoon and independent animation veteran and son of Naga City, Roxlee, famed for his long-running comic strip, “Cesar Asar” in Manila Bulletin.

“This is indeed a surprise for me,” shares Roxlee, “and I am deeply honored to be this year’s lifetime achievement awardee. I am also quite ecstatic that this year’s festival is giving due attention to other animators from all around the country. I believe this is the key to a successful and flourishing animation industry for the years to come.”

Roxlee’s debut collection of illustrated short stories, entitled “Cesar Asar in the Planet of the Noses,” will also be launched and sold during the festival exhibit. The book comes in the form of different comic strips, which Roxlee and his brother Monlee worked on. The book also celebrates and recognizes his almost three decades of contribution to the independent animation industry since Roxlee’s first short work, “The Great Smoke” in 1983.

Capping the whole festival is the closing ceremony and awards night that will be held at the CamSur Watersports Complex on November 26.

Animahenasyon serves as a venue for Filipino animators to present their world-class ideas, and opens doors of opportunities for them to meet with and be inspired by the finest names in the industry. It also aims to create greater awareness of the Philippine animation industry and its contributions to the global entertainment business, while tapping locally produced content for promotion in animation markets here and abroad.

Animahenasyon is made possible through the support of the Commission on Information and Communications Technology, Hewlett Packard Philippines, Ateneo de Naga University, Hero TV, the French Embassy, Naga City Investment Board, and the province of Camarines Sur.

Naga BNS tops NutriQuiz contest

LEGAZPI CITY --- Marilou P. Cañete, a Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS) of Concepcion Grande, Naga City, won the top prize of P5,000 in the Regional NutriQuiz Contest held last Nov. 19 at the LCC Activity Center here.

BNS Imelda Ibuna of Maranaw, Basud Camarines Norte won the second prize of P3, 000 while the third prize of P2, 000 went to BNS Marcelina Joven of Sta. Justina, Buhi, Camarines Sur.

The NutriQuiz Contest is an annual project of the Nutrition Communication Network or NUTRICOMNET headed by Director Eduardo de Leon of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA). The network is under the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

A total of 12 BNS participated in the contest. Malou Galang of the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) was chairman of the board of judges.

Aida Alcazar-Naz of PIA acted as emcee and quiz master.

Arlene Reario, Nutrition Program Coordinator, National Nutrition Council (NNC), briefed the participants on the contest rules.

The contest consisted of the elimination round and the championship round. The questions were based on the food and nutrition program of the government.

Every correct answer to the easy question earned 1 point. Every correct answer to the average question earned 2 points while every correct answer to the difficult question was given 3 points.

The five contestants with the highest scores automatically qualified for the championship round.

Speaking in behalf of DOST Regional Director Tomas Briñas who was in Manila, Dr. Pilita Lucena congratulated all the BNS who had joined the NutriQuiz Contest.

“You are all winners in your own right but in every contest there are winners and losers. Remember the winner never quits and quitter never wins. So to the losers try your luck next year,’ Lucena said.

She thanked all the agencies, government and private, that have made NUTRICOMNET Bicol No. 1 in the country.

IRIGA LGU SPORTSFEST 2010 HELD
The local government of Iriga City held its annual sportfest at the Iriga City coloseum on November 11 and 12, 2010. A Fun Walk/Run was held on a pleasantly cool and foggy morning to open the games.

The 900 plus employees of the city government were divided into four clusters and were designated the colors green, orange, red and blue. The four clusters battled it out in basketball, volleyball, table tennis and darts.

Mayor Madel, insisting that the games was purely for the fun and recreation of the employees, introduced an innovation in basketball and volleyball wherein the winner of the first match will combine with the loser of the second match and compete with the winner of the second match and the loser of the first match for the Championship.

On the second day of the event, parlor games were played to the amusement of the crowd and joy of the participants as prizes were given out. In addition to the sports events, cash prizes were raffled off in between the games and during halftime.

To cap off the exciting two days, a bingo social was played where baskets of groceries and sacks of rice was won by lucky players. The grand prize of 20,000.00 pesos was won by a lucky player from the red team.

NAGA CITY --- The word “crazy” does not always refer to one who has something loose in his head. A Webster dictionary also defines it as something or someone who is inordinately eager or is so foolishly desirous. That’s what happens when you drop by Jojo L. Villafuerte’s Crazy Cut Woodcraft which is now becoming a craze among homeowners and furniture lovers who yearn for a piece or two of his newfound masterpieces.

Started in 2007 in Sitio San Rafael, Barangay Cararayan, a rural upland village that is nestled at the foot of lush Mt. Isarog in Naga City, Crazy Cut Woodcraft has since then become one of Metro Naga’s and Bicol’s leading furniture shops. It is best known for magically turning wood scraps into world-class furniture that in fact earned for the shop the award as “Top Seller” during the well-attended First Annual Bishop Francisco Gainza Trade Fair at the SM City Naga by the Tercentenary Committee of the 300th year celebration of the Peñafrancia Fiesta last Sept. 9-20, 2010.

Not known to many, the woodcraft started as a hobby. Jojo, the owner, is a man of creative mind and daring ideas. But, of course, nobody would call him crazy. Crazily in love with the arts and crafts, yes.

He transforms wood scraps into world-class furniture that makes him a disciple for environment preservation by turning wastes into sources of productive endeavors.

It all began one Saturday morning when Jojo went to visit his father’s home and saw scraps of wood lying idly in the backyard. He asked them to be brought home because he hinted he could make craft out of the scrap. The finished works he gave to his friends as gift who appreciated not only his generosity but also the uniqueness and durability of the designs of his products.

Soon, many who wanted to have a piece of the action ordered to buy his products where they were assured that each design is unique – no matching pair, no same artwork, pattern or size – where each piece is a masterpiece. The only things common among them are the superior quality of work and durability of raw materials used. Accordingly, he took in experienced carpenters and artisans who come from families of known furniture makers to help him meet the demands of growing customers and clients.

Crazy Cut Woodcrafts uses state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques and hand finishing for every concept design. Jojo assures that each wood product is treated and kiln dried. His workers use only top-class polyurethane for either glossy shine or dead flat top coat and finishing touch on each wood craft.

His array of products include windows made of wood that cost from P250 per square foot to wooden beds, dining tables and sala sets that are prized from P18,000 to P20,000 and up. The shop also makes distinctive wood trophies from P500 apiece and doors at P8, 000 and up per piece. These items have been displayed and have awed visitors in various trade fairs, such as Orgullo kan Bicol at the SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City, at the Kaogma Festival in Pili, Camarines Sur, the Annual Bicol Business Week in Naga City and the recent First Bishop Francisco Gainza Trade Fair.

My First Teacher

MY first teacher was Liliosa Genova Valiente. She is my mother, a public school teacher.

She was not my teacher in the sense of us sitting at her feet and listening to tales and lessons. I do not remember learning my alphabets from her. But my mother taught us by being a public school teacher.

My mother’s first assignment was a distant barrio (as barangays were known then) called Ipil in the town of San Fernando, Island of Ticao in Masbate. There were no cars in those years and the luxury for the teachers then was either taking the carabao sled over humps and canals and soft, muddy cowpaths. Sometimes, they would ride carabaos and horses in a sidesaddle manner.

Some of the young teachers in her group came from as far as Ilocos and the Tagalog area. Together with the headteacher, my mother and her friends would leave the town of San Fernando early morning of Monday and come back during Fridays. When there were meetings in the town, they were allowed to leave early during the week. On their way to that barrio and back, they had to cross streams and rivers. They avoided going home at night because the river was dangerous to cross when it was dark. They were also careful to cross the river when there were flashfloods brought by the rain.

Even now, she recalls vividly the time they crossed a swollen river and almost got carried by the surge. When they got home, the entire neighborhood was already frantic about the “young teachers caught in the storm.” Even in those days, the news travelled fast, and always told with such dramatic flair.

When my father started working in Naga City, my mother sought a transfer to the nearest assignment. She was detailed in Pili, some 12 kilometers from our city. As there was no vacancy then for the lower grade she was used to handling, she was asked to handle a Grade 6 class. We always looked at the photographs of that class and we often wondered why they all looked like they were in high school. Apparently, the students would miss their class session years back and soon would find themselves repeating the grade. It was a class of repeaters but again I never heard my mother complain. If there was a problem, it was because she did not know how to teach Music. This was easily resolved with another teacher coming in to teach Music.

Soon, my mother was back to teaching Grade 1. Again, we remembered the photos of her pupils and we wondered why they looked like they should be in higher grades.

We lived then in an old rambling house along Ateneo Avenue. That home had a wide, stable roof that doubled as awning. On that roof, my brothers (our sister was a baby then) would wait for her to arrive. She always arrived at 5pm and she would carry with her ricecakes from Pili. She carried a lunchbox sometimes.

My mother, like all public school teachers, had simple needs and taste. She did not need jewelry and when she was gifted with something that looked like jewelry, she was very happy. I remember giving her a really handsome ring, not real but dashing enough to fool the uninitiated eye. She cried upon seeing it because she said she had never received something like that. I felt guilty and soon found myself the next week buying the “real thing,” which shocked her altogether.

During Christmas, my mother would choose one pupil from her class and she would take him to our home. There, the boy would spend the holidays with us. It was never explained why there was this extra child in our home. The only thing I remembered was when she told us some children never really experienced Christmas.

My mother retired early because of the onset of arthritis. She stayed at home and we enjoyed her company. I do not know if she missed teaching but, one time, an NGO, was looking for a teacher for adult education. She taught once more but that time the pupils’ age ranged from 50 to 60.

Five years ago, my father passed away. My mother was disconsolate. Each day, we would see her alone in the porch, in that space she had shared with my father. From that day also of my father’s passing on, she never stopped wearing black in public. We asked her why and the explanation was very simple: when my father was still alive, they talked about what would happen if one of them was gone. My father promised he would visit her grave every day. My mother vowed never to stop wearing a black mourning dress when she stepped out of the house.

A few months after my father’s death, we came up with a project called Project Lily, with her name “L.I.L.Y” standing for “Little Angels Learning and Yearning for Knowledge.” We did not seek any funding but used our little surpluses. The project was a response to what we saw outside the boundaries of our subdivision: little children going to formal education without the benefit of a functional pre-school.

We broached the idea to her, and she was quite excited about the prospect of being a teacher again. We walked with her through the village outside our neighborhood and chose on the spot families with a child from 4 to 5 years. We limited the number to 10 because that was what our small porch could carry.

We provide the kids with bags and school supplies. A cousin, Dr. Jessie Badillo-Snyder, based in the United States and who founded a foundation meant to help selected sites in Bicol, including her home province, Masbate, is helping us with school supplies, art materials, books, and nutritious crackers through her KissRoot Foundation.

My nieces and nephews in the house help in the storytelling. The other nieces and my two sisters-in-law who are nurses assist in the health education program.

Before we send home the children, we feed them. Most of the time, that snack is the only food intake of some children for that day.

We have many ideas about this little project but, in the end, it is my mother who runs this tiny school. I do not know if her thought about my father’s loss is ever consoled by these little kids. If there is something significant about this project is that she listened to our plea not to wear black when she teaches. Before her little angels, she opts for black and white.

One afternoon, I overheard her telling the small kids how to call her. Call me “Ma’am Lily, not “Lola Lily.”As the tiniest kid was about to leave the gate, he turned and said: Goodbye, Lola Lily.

It is the 5th anniversary of our school. My mother is all of 84 years of age now. She walks unassisted. She tends to her plants and the small collection of orchids. She still teaches. She is my mother, my first teacher. She did not teach me how to write. She did not teach me how to draw. She taught me great things by being that, a true public school teacher.

For this school, she has only one request from the parents of her pupils, and that is for them to plant malunggay or moringa. That is their tuition fee. During graduation, the parents also take care of decorating the small stage in our subdivision. From there, it does not matter if they call her "Ma’am Lily" or “Lola Lily.”

The new Archbishop of Caceres

Today ---- November 25, 2010 ----His Grace, Most Rev. Leonardo Z. Legaspi turns 75 years old, the signal age for any prelate in the Roman Catholic Church --- except the Pope ----- to retire. However his tenure in the Archdiocese of Caceres may be extended for some months or even years to give the Vatican the time to choose whom to appoint in the Archdiocese.

Who will succeed Archbishop Leonardo Z. Legaspi?

In an interview, a member of the Caceres clergy preferred to have a non-Bikolnon as a fitting successor of Archbishop Legaspi. On one hand, a non-Bikolnon Archbishop in Caceres has all the necessary impartiality in dealing with the native clergy. He has neither favor nor fear for any member of the local clergy. He can have his own agenda in running the Archdiocese in any which way that he is empowered by Canon Law. He can discipline the clergy with resoluteness.

On the other hand, a Bikolnon Archbishop in Caceres may bring with him his prejudices when he assumes his office. His long association with the native clergy and the impressions he has on them may bring about restrictions in his fellowship with them.

In another interview, a member of the laity expressed preference in having a Bikolnon succeed Archbishop Legaspi. For him, another Bikolnon prelate can do a lot of good for the Archdiocese since the long line of Bikolnon bishops who had ruled the see has proven to be favorable for the local church. It is high time that another Bikolnon shall now sit in the Archdiocese, if only to give a break to the local clergy who have had enough ---- 26 long years ----- under the rule of a non-Bikolnon.

Who will succeed Archbishop Leonardo Z. Legaspi ---- a Bikolnon or a non-Bikolnon?

Some names --- from the circle of Bikolnon prelates --- have been floated. Some say Bishop of Tagum Wilfredo D. Manlapaz, born in Paracale, Camarines Norte, who used to be the Rector of the Holy Rosary Minor Seminary will make a good successor of Archbishop Legaspi. Besides the appointment will be an elevation for him --- from being a bishop for the past 29 years to being an Archbishop. He is only 69.

Others say Virac Bishop Manolo A. de los Santos, born in Basud, Camarines Norte, is also a good choice for the Archdiocese of Caceres. He has been in the Bicol region for a long time and is conversant with the affairs in the Archdiocese, particularly with the development plans for Caramoan and its neighboring islands which are in the national agenda. He used to handle propitiously the responsibilities of the Rector of the Peñafrancia Basilica and of the Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Caceres --- two very sensitive positions he had held in the Archdiocese. It will also be an elevation for him, having stayed in Bicol as one of its prelates for the past 16 years. He is only 63.

Whoever is named by the Vatican to be the Archbishop of Caceres will be good for the Archdiocese --- for the clergy as well as for the faithful.

The new Archbishop of Caceres is expected to have the courage to draw the line between what is sacred and what is profane. He will not be so political as to encourage political incursions into the church or so popish as to set a cordon sanitaire between him and the local clergy and the faithful. That will be good for the Archdiocese.

The new Archbishop of Caceres is expected to be an archbishop in the true sense of the word --- a good shepherd who knows the voice of his flock and who has his eyes in the company of his priests--- ready to leave the 99 good ones if only to search for the one lost sheep. That will be good for the Archdiocese.

Early Bird Fortuno

Strategically mounted right at the approach of the now abandoned old bridge at San Jose, Camarines Sur is a giant billboard of 5th District Congressman Salvio “Sal” Fortuno, which reads “ May your Christmas really jingle this year,” complete with the legislator’s portrait featuring his disarming smile.

For an aging observer of Camarines Sur’s political drama, the spectacle immediately sends an easy to fathom message. This early, Fortuno is already gunning for the gubernatorial post. The move is not at all a surprise. It is in fact an astute one. And being a veteran of the province’s political game, Sal may just be putting into action an old yet reliable saying “The early bird catches the worm.”

Already on his third and last successive term, Governor Luis Raymund Villafuerte will have no choice but to abandon the Capitol by 2012 and either aspire for another position like being a congressman of the third district or senator, or even as mayor of Naga City. He could even aspire for an appointive position.

That therefore leaves the gubernatorial post up for grabs. At least two veteran traditional moguls however may also be interested in the governorship. Third district representative Luis R. Villafuerte, father of L- Ray Villafuerte, might decide to go back to the Capitol. Deputy Speaker Arnulfo “Noli” Fuentebella of the fourth district might give it a try for the province’s top position. Both have almost identical predicament. Louie is definitely aging. No matter how Noli denies it obviously he is suffering from a lingering illness.

Cong. Villafuerte might just simply fade away from active politics and be a king- maker. The same is true with the fourth district solon whose political clout provincewide is not so impressive, compared to their family’s hold in the Partido Area where at least two of the family members are town executives. His wife Evelyn is Sagnay mayor. Their son Arni, is Tigaon’s chief executive. There are even talks that another family member will be fielded for the mayoralty race in San Jose, Camarines Sur. A wily move. The fourth district solon does not have to worry about the sources of livelihood of his family members and make local governments an employment agency. Besides, by making his children run for elective positions instead of putting up non- relative candidates, he is able to save a lot. In effect, Congressman Fuentebella is shooting several birds, err, votes, with one bullet (make it fat dirty envelope). There is such a thing as boomerang though.



Three members of the Fuentebella clan namely, Jose Pepito Fuentebella, Wimpy Fuentebella and Emmanuel Fuentebella Llaguno, all lost in their vice- gubernatorial aspirations. The late Gov. Felix A. Fuentebella held the governorship during abnormal times. Even Noli, who held the speakership the shortest time in history perhaps, lost his bid for membership of the Batasan Pambansa against the rag-tag team of the so -called “Apat na Agila “composed of Luis R. Villafuerte, Edmundo Cea, Ciriaco “Boboy” Alfelor and Rolando R. Andaya, who had a clean sweep of the provincewide election against the formidable and well-oiled pro- dictatorship team led by Fuentebella in 1984.

As to the Alfelor’s, the family being practical might just concentrate their finances and machinery to regain control of the Rinconada Area. Note that Sal posted a very slim majority over his opponent Manny Alfelor in the 2010 congressional fight. With Nancing Alfelor’s crashing defeat in the gubernatorial race, he will have to entertain a very serious thought –whether to try again for the third time for the gubernatorial race.

On the other hand, Fortuno’s gubernatorial aspirations, may just open wide the congressional slot in the fifth district. As a consequence, Fortuno will find a practical ally in the Alfelor’s.

As to the Villafuerte’s , note that Sal’s most effective weapon as a politician is his being a yes man. As the late Senator Genaro Magsaysay put it “ more talk, more mistake, less talk, less mistake, no talk, no mistake, “. Fortuno has mastered this attitude. He used the same approach in forging for several times a united Sangguniang Panlalawigan during his vice governorship. His being a political butterfly has also been a very big asset to his political career.

As to Congressman Rolando Andaya of the first district, he missed the boat in the last gubernatorial battle. Congressman Dato Arroyo of the second district will find it very difficult to aspire for governor. He might even find a hard time for re- election, with his mother no longer president.

Of course, Fortuno will reap negative comments. One of them is the absence or lack of performance as a congressman. But the same holds true to all members of the House. Remove the pork barrel and all of them, with a few exceptions, are on equal footing.

What counts most is whether the money earmarked for their districts is spent wisely and honestly. On this score, Fortuno’s record is beyond reproach so far. More importantly, Sal’s experience is mostly managerial. He is therefore more fit as an executive than a legislator.

Understandably, Fortuno may not like this piece for fear of the repercussion of courting the ire of the Villafuerte’s. That is his look out anyway. Besides, there is also a possibility that the two most durable politicians of Camarines Sur will meet head- on come 2012 for the gubernatorial race. Congressman Villafuerte, who has often been rumored to be intermittently collapsing in the campaign trail, may not find it very practical to go back to the Capitol. Congressman Fuentebella, who is also fast becoming old, might find his hands full because of the political aspirations of the other members of the family. But politicians like boxers do not find it very easy to retire unless knocked out successively. This may be particularly true in the case of Congressman Villafuerte, who has tasted only one defeat in his entire political career. As to Fuentebella, he has no choice but either to retire and manage the political career of his family or run for governor.

NOTE: The fifth district solon called up to explain that the installation of his giant billboard at the old San Jose, Pili Bridge was not for any province-wide political motive. Rather, he said he did not find a more strategic site right within his very own district. Well, let us see. Ehem!!!
