NAGA CITY—Millions of people are expected to descend on this city to celebrate a 300-year-old religious tradition that revolves around the Our Lady of Peñafrancia, or Ina, Bicol’s patroness.
A procession, called traslacion, will mark the start of 300 years of festivities that started in 1710.
On the ninth day of festivities, hundreds of thousands are expected to take part in a fluvial parade devoted to Ina.
The traslacion evolved with the growth in the number of devotees over the years, requiring the transfer of Ina’s image to a bigger venue—from the Peñafrancia Shrine to the Metropolitan Cathedral of this city.
Barefoot, all-male devotees are expected to carry the image of Ina, and that of Jesus Christ called Divino Rostro, on their shoulders from the shrine to the cathedral.
Over the years, the devotion spread throughout the region, then brought to other places inside and outside the country by growing number of devotees who descend on this city for the country’s only regional religious fiesta.
In line with this year’s theme, the Archdiocese of Caceres in a pastoral letter issued on Aug. 22 by Archbishop Leonardo Z. Legazpi called on all devotees, pilgrims and the faithful to turn their attention inward and start incorporating the spirit of the devotion to Ina into their lives.
The theme “Monstra te Esse Filium” (Show Yourself To Be a Child of Ina) should be deemed as a challenge to all devotees to live with devotion to Ina in their everyday lives, said Fr. Louie Occiano, head of Caceres Commission on Communications.
He said after all the fanfare and expenses of the 300th Peñafrancia fiesta, celebrations this year would be less grand and more solemn.
The 300th year theme, Balaog Inako, Balaog Itao (A Gift Received, A Gift to Share) called on all devotees and pilgrims to accept the gift of devotion to Ina and share it to the world.
Occiano explained that this time, the ‘gift’ must be incorporated into the lives of devotees to sustain their faith beyond the feast.
He called on all devotees to sustain the discernment and realization of their devotion to the Virgin for the tradition to live past the 300-year mark.
Unlike last year, Papal Nuncio to the Philippines Edward Adams would not be present due to other engagements, said Occiano.
Peñafrancia Fiesta 2010 was marked by the declaration of Camarines Sur and Naga City as Pilgrimage Capitals of the Philippines by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 33 issued by President Aquino.
Before the opening of the celebrations today, the Porta Mariae at the Metropolitan Cathedral was unveiled to commemorate the presence of Ina in the lives of Bicolanos.

VESTS of the Our Lady of Penafrancia which are used during special occasions are displayed at a museum for public viewing. JUAN ESCANDOR JR.
NAGA CITY—The image of Bicolandia’s patroness, Our Lady of Peñafrancia, is a little more than a foot high but appears radiant like a queen in a glittering vest made of special fabrics sewn with real silver and gold threads.
The handcrafted vest, worn during the celebration of the 300-year devotion to “Ina” that culminated in September last year, is patched with two ivory plates carved with a tiny bas relief of the iconic image and the Divino Rostro (Holy Face).
It, however, is worn only by the original image that is hidden from the public in a restricted prayer room within the compound of the Basilica Minore, its permanent home.
‘Manto’
Each year from September to mid-October, the Ina draws millions of pilgrims and devotees who believe in her miraculous power and the power of protection of her vest called “manto.”
Catholics celebrate the nine-day religious feast starting on the second Friday of September and culminating on the third Sunday of September in a fluvial procession at the Naga River.
Msgr. Romulo Vergara, rector of the Basilica Minore, said the vests symbolize the protection the patroness gives to her devotees.
“It’s akin to the protection a mother hen gives to its chicks. In times of difficulties, we attribute so many things to Ina and ask for her protection and intercession,” he said.
Replicas
Vergara said replicas of the original image were used for different intentions while the one used during the Peñafrancia fiesta processions in September is garbed with a vest coated

with fiberglass to withstand the wiping of devotees.
The original image, however, was the one used last year as it passed the “Porta Mariae,” a commemorative arch or symbolic door built at the Naga Metropolitan Cathedral to mark the 300-year journey of Marian devotion in Naga City.
The primary trustee of the image of Ina for 10 years now, Vergara said it was only during his term as rector when the vests worn by the original image were listed, properly accounted for and kept.
Sr. Eppie B. Cantuba, caretaker of the vests, said she has some 30 vests with intricate designs intended as museum pieces and several other plain vests borrowed by devotees who wrap them around persons suffering from illnesses.
Borrowers
“At least 10 plain vests are borrowed every week, which are returned after two or three weeks or even more, depending on the kind of illness,” she said.
If a certain vest is borrowed for quite a lengthy period, it is returned but another one is given as substitute for the the devotee who still has need for it.
On the other side of the Naga River, across the Basilica Minore, the Our Lady of Peñafrancia Museum houses some more vests Ina had worn on several important occasions.
These include a ripped-off vest, one worn during Ina’s coronation in 1924 and another worn in 1999 during her 75th year of coronation.
Tercentenary vest
But the most precious is the tercentenary vest donned by the original image, which was donated by business tycoon Manny Pangilinan and lawyer Paul Guico, Cantuba said.
Vergara said the original image has not been viewed publicly since it was stolen on Aug. 16, 1981, and returned to the basilica on Sept. 17, 1982, just in time for the culmination of the religious feast.
“For security and to protect the delicate santol wood, the original image has to be kept safe in this restricted prayer room.”
The Peñafrancia image was first introduced in Naga in 1710 by Spanish priest Miguel Robles de Covarrubias.

garzland September 10th, 2011, 04:16 PM I'm really happy that Naga and CamSur has always been on the forefront of sports tourism activities in the Philippines.
We have already hosted the Palarong Pambansa three times since 1997, Ironman Competition for the last 3 years, International, Asian and Philippine Wakeboarding Competition for the past five years, the Internnational Dragon Boat Competition last year, the yearly Bicol leg of Milo Marathon for I believe more than ten years now, CamSur Marathon for the past 2 years. The Tour of CamSur has now expanded into an international event with cyclists from other countries participating.
Last year we had two Bicol cities hosting the Milo Marathon (Naga and Legazpi) but this time- they merged it again to a single Bicol Leg.
The province already made the reputation of being the sport tourism center in South Luzon and maybe, even the Philippines.
OTE]
Almost everything is specialized nowadays: physicians to go to, places to eat, schools to study, stores to shop in… so why not places to visit as well? This must be the reason Naga and CamSur are benefiting from being marketed and successfully being known as the sport tourism center in South Luzon and even the Philippines. It will be even better if other attractions can be planned for the ladies and their children accompanying the sportsmen, outside of the sports facilities. World-class zoos or botanical gardens are always popular, for example, or river cruises. Then, you double and target more tourists to come and visit!
Booming tourism industry means booming investments which eventually translates to more jobs, better infra and better lives of the people! :okay:
Clear example of this are the Caramoan-Lagonoy, Goa-Tinamabac, and Tamban Tinambac roads which were out of the infra priorities before but due to tourism boom these roads were given emphasis and on its way to be 100% paved. Siruma-Tinambac road is also under construction :okay:
For Naga, in terms of river cruises, it's very feasible once the Naga River Project is materialized. Naga will never be the same once it's done.

Electric trimobiles to hit
streets this Peñafrancia fiesta
By Jason B. Neola
NAGA CITY --- Stepping up the battle against worsening air pollution, the City Government of Naga has welcomed a partnership proposal from a private company that engages in renewable energy-generation and development of innovative clean technology products.
Mayor John G. Bongat sees the upcoming initiative on electric vehicle as an effective way to improve the city’s air quality.
The city government, it should be recalled, purchased last June, this year, two units of testing machines for smoke-belching gas-fueled vehicles, which underscored city hall’s unrelenting battle against polluters of the environment.
As an immediate result, the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (City ENRO) found 19 motor vehicles, or 70 percent of the 27 automobiles plying the city streets as smoke-belchers. Operators were warned to fix their defective machines and exhaust systems, or face penalty as provided for by the Clean Air Act of 1999.
Enzolutions Inc., in association with Eco-Merge Philippines, Inc. and Gerweiss Motors Corporation, plans to deploy an initial 50 units of electric tricycles (e-trikes) in this city.
Engr. Gabriel Zamudio Jr., Enzolutions managing director, said the e-trikes will start running in time for the 301st celebration of the devotion to Nuestra Sra. De Peñafrancia this month while the electronic passenger jeep (e-jeeps) will hit the road in December, this year.
Naga is one of the few selected cities in the country where some 1,000 units of electric trimobiles and 500 units of electric jeepneys will be initially deployed nationwide.
As a necessary component, Enzolutions will also put up solar-powered charging stations within the year when operation of electric passenger vehicles is already in full-swing.
The company is already coordinating closely with the city on the other details of the project, including the issuance of necessary permits by the city government.
Zamudio said they will also ask the city government to endorse drivers for the electric passenger vehicles which will be operated under a lease scheme.
The deployment of electric vehicles in the city is contained in the project’s first phase which aims to determine its commercial viability and demonstrate to the public the technical aspect of the vehicle as a cleaner and economical alternative mode of transportation.
A study shows that an electric tricycle saves around five to six liters of gasoline equivalent to P200 to P300 a day. Daily battery recharging costs P45 to P60 only.
Based on the research conducted by the University of the Philippines-National Center for Transportation Studies (UP-NCTS) gasoline-fed vehicles emit fine-particulate matters that bring serious illness to people.
The emissions become even worse due to vehicle age, poor maintenance, lubricant misuse and fuel adulteration.

Are the e-tricycles the same with we have right now in Naga in terms of design?
This is exciting!!!
garzland September 10th, 2011, 04:28 PM cheers, NCF!
i hope NCF is conferred its University status soon. that will mean a total 4 universities for Naga (UNC, USI, AdNU); and a total of 8 for CamSur (plus CBSUA, USANT, UNEP, PSU) !
Congrats, NCF!
How soon would it be? I've been waiting for it for a decade now to become the fourth university in Naga.

NAGA City -- Thousands of pilgrims, devotees and tourists converged here yesterday for the traditional “Traslacion procession,” a 19th century religious rite, kicking off a nine-day celebration of the feast of Bicolandia’s patroness, the Virgin of Peñafrancia.
At a homily at the Peñafrancia Shrine before a penitential procession that started at dawn, Naga City Archbishop Leonardo Z. Legazpi, OP. DD said once again the orderly celebration of the “Traslacion” was the result of the good conduct of the devotees.
The five-hour procession was joined by some 3,000 members of the “Guardias de Maria” from three districts of the province who kept order within the perimeter of the Peñafrancia carriage. They were augmented by police and Army personnel.
The procession which started at 12 noon and ended at 5 p.m. took the original 19th century route from the Peñafrancia Shrine to the Naga Cathedral, with stops in seven altar-stations installed along the way.
Official Church estimates said nearly a million people stood along the way from Peñafrancia Avenue to Naga Cathedral.
During the preparations for last year’s Peñafrancia Tercentenary celebration (1710-2010), the Archbishop had called for a “renewal on the Peñafrancia devotion.”
He conducted dialogues with the city government to make the nine-day celebration exclusive for religious rites alone. He also urged to stop the commercialization of the festivities, instill discipline and prohibit drunken “voyadores” or bearers of the Peñafrancia carriage from joining the procession.
In response, Peñafrancia Barangay Captain Jeffrey Moralde implemented a long-standing ordinance banning stores along Peñafrancia Avenue and procession route from selling liquor, beer and other alcoholic beverages starting Thursday evening.
Starting last year, the “voyadores” were organized into religious fraternities dubbed “Confradia de San Jose” with members wearing designated colored T-shirts during the procession in accord with their parishes under the Archdiocese of Caceres.
Last year, President Benigno Aquino III declared Naga City and Camarines Sur as “Pilgrimage City and Province” under Presidential Proclamation No. 33.

Naga City was named from the abundance of Narra Trees, Naga in Bikol. In the mid 1500's, Naga was a flourishing village along the banks of the Naga River. For hundeds of years Naga City has been known for its history of trade, education, and strong catholic culture. Traslacion happens every 2nd Friday of September and this is the trasfer of image of Divino Rostro and Penafrancia which is called "Mahal na Ina". This shows the culture and the strong belief of the devotee especially the Naguenos and the Bicolanos.
Naga's charm as a historic city as well as the wide range of destinations and activities make it one of the most visited tourism sites in the Philippines. From old churches dating from Philippines' Spanish colonial era that dot the city to pristine Mt. Isarog Natural Park which overlooks Naga, Naga never fails to amaze. A world-class wakeboard resort also beckons to the sports buff and even the adventurist at heart.

hakz2007 September 11th, 2011, 07:12 AM Arroyo dam project in Camarines Sur still a go
NAGA CITY—The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) is pushing for the resumption of the controversial Libmanan-Cabusao Dam (LCD) project in Malaguico, Sipocot, Camarines Sur, based on a new study it has submitted to the National Economic Development Administration (Neda).
NIA Deputy Administrator Democratico Grana said last week that at least P700 million of the original budget of P1.9 billion has been obligated for the project.
“In the revised project study the cost of the dam project has been pegged at P1.4 billion or at a cost reduction of 26 percent for the irrigation of some 4,000 hectares of rice farms in Libmanan and Cabusao,” he said. hakz2007 September 11th, 2011, 07:18 AM Malacanang mum on Binay recommendations for Marcos burial
LAOAG CITY – [...]
Camarines Sur Governor Luis Raymond Villafuerte Jr., a guest of Ms Marcos, said he would lobby members of the Governor’s League of the Philippines to pursue a heroes’ burial for the late strongman.
Villafuerte and the Camarines Sur officials entered a sisterhood pact with Ilocos Norte on Saturday evening.
“Camarines Sur owes a huge debt of gratitude to Ferdinand Marcos for the Maharlika Highway that now bridges Bicol and Metro Manila,” he told fellow officials at the sisterhood signing ceremony.
He repeated the statement at a news conference. Villafuerte, vice chairman of the governors’ league, said he wanted to pass a resolution stipulating that deposed president Marcos’ only burial place should be at the Libingan ng Mga Bayani.
During their bantering, both governors also alluded to a political campaign to bring another Marcos to the presidency.
Villafuerte later said that they were referring to Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. More: http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/56721/malacanang-mum-on-binay-recommendations-for-marcos-burial

PILI, Camarines Sur – At least 100 sacks of dried palay were taken by thieves who broke into a warehouse owned by the National Food Authority in Barangay Santiago recently.
NFA provincial manager Edna de Guzman is worried the incident may set a precedent and encourage other criminal elements to do the same.
De Guzman said this is the first robbery incident at the warehouse. She said the robbers entered the building by boring a hole though the concrete wall several meters above the ground. More: http://www.journal.com.ph/index.php/news/provincial/13099-nfa-warehouse-robbed

MANILA, Philippines — It is a concession that everyone readily accepts – that this 21st century creation called the Internet has given us immense benefits and convenience that are immeasurable and access to a broad range of information, infinite.
But the Internet can also be disconcerting. Like what this corner received from an e-mail recently.
It is all about what is happening in that contentious province in the Bicol region, Camarines Sur. It tells of a horde of allegations that many Bicolanos are talking about these days. More: http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/333664/camsur-issues

hakz2007 September 11th, 2011, 08:43 AM The other story about CamSur
Nobody wants to learn of family infighting.
News about Rep. Luis Villafuerte and son, Camarines Sur Gov. LRay, burning bridges is unfortunate, saddening and infuriating all at the same time.
As narrated by the elder Villafuerte, he went to LRay’s house to try to patch things up with his son on Father’s Day. The two, as we all know, are at odds over the issue of splitting the province into two. But instead of reconciling with his estranged dad, LRay reportedly ordered his dad to get out of the house.
If LRay can conveniently disown his own father and mentor in life and politics for fleeting political gain, can the people of Camarines Sur trust him to lead them out of poverty towards progress? http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=725854&publicationSubCategoryId=66

sonofignatius September 11th, 2011, 12:03 PM me too, the big four na kapag nag University naman ang NCF :D
btw, the exit road at the back of SM City Naga is now accessible. No need for us to squeeze ourselves in with the heavy traffic of tricycles and jeepneys at main road of CBD 2. Tumbok na maray sa Cocina Conchita si exit
all the best to NCF and its effort to achieve university status. requirements for university status (applications filed with CHED) include: good tertiary and graduate programs and variety of these courses, good track record in board exams, strong research and extension programs (including centers servicing outside communities), majority of faculty having graduate degrees, adequate campus size, facilities and services.
a grade school dept is not a requirement btw :) (think ateneo de naga)
the city is doing much to ease traffic :banana::banana: thank you, City Hall!
Sipocot indeed is a major artery and is a good place for business. Libmanan is a key place, too; reason why, i believe, the diocese carved out of the Archdiocese of Caceres is situated there.
good strategy by LCC. reminds me of Banco de Oro in a smaller scale. it's gping everywhere, to almost every corner!
fil07 September 11th, 2011, 12:05 PM And then there is this boast of the provincial executive of his province’s tremendous strides in tourism, a claim that many in the national media are skeptical about.
For example, the governor says some 2.3 million tourists came to CamSur in 2010, a figure that is even much higher than what Cebu or Boracay singly lured. “In that case, its water sports (wakeboarding) and Caramoan Island must have drawn in 6,000 visitors a day last year,” Bicolanos wondered.
Why are the natives unbelieving? “We have limited commercial flights a day, just as there are not enough hotel rooms. Where did he get those figures?”
Local business establishments are similarly skeptical. If those tourists really came to CamSur, they have yet to hear the sound of a peso coin filtering in to their cash register they said.

A world-class wakeboard resort also beckons to the sports buff and even the adventurist at heart.
the other theory on the origin of the name "Naga" says that it may have come from the term for serpent/ dragon/ snake "naga" common in this part of Southeast Asia. the term (and the design/ motif of "naga", the serpent) exists in countries neighboring PH.
why serpent/ snake? the river looks like one as it meanders or snakes through the river plain of Naga. the town of Naga, Zamboanga Sibugay also has a river in it. not sure, though, if there is a river in Naga, Cebu.

hakz2007 September 11th, 2011, 12:13 PM Sipocot indeed is a major artery and is a good place for business. Libmanan is a key place, too; reason why, i believe, the diocese carved out of the Archdiocese of Caceres is situated there.
and if Nueva Camarines created, possibly, the Church in the future, will establish a separate diocese for this new province if ever
hahaha. dawa pa mayong artikulong siring.

josh2 September 11th, 2011, 05:16 PM It's a mini-mall just like its branches in Bicol.
Agree, LCC Sipocot and Libmanan are very feasible.

Daet has already its own mall way early 2000's pa. It's just that it's now as grand as other malls in the region.
hakz2007 September 12th, 2011, 01:53 AM ^^malaki rin ang kanilang local mall doon
Naga City Deck September 12th, 2011, 01:57 AM yan ang official service vehicle ng Naga, Ms. Jo?
^^I luv the bus! ful of character ha
siguro saro sa mga service..? i dunno.. i haven't seen that bus much during Robredo's term. From the looks of that bus, it was restored.. :)

it's not that grand siguro sir? hehe
yeah, they have one, one and only to be specific, because it's the only structure that there that's quite big and block type of building.. i just don't know today.. The name is "Central Plaza Mall"
and at least may SHakey's sinda dyan sa mall na yan hehe
hakz2007 September 12th, 2011, 02:04 AM ^^Central Plaza Mall nga ang pangalan...Mas malaki pa sa LCC Naga.
sonofignatius September 12th, 2011, 02:54 AM and if Nueva Camarines created, possibly, the Church in the future, will establish a separate diocese for this new province if ever
this sounds practical :)
^^Naga city universities used to be the perennial champion in Military parade but nowadays it's a different story...
that's right. UNC and the Ateneo were perennial rivals in parades past. the latter has experienced a trophy drought for a long, long time :ohno: in our 4 years of high school at the ateneo, our class (batch) was the only one that didn't take home the championship trophy. kaya ang pirming suba samo kadto; "mga padagog" hehe.
but on the other hand it is good to spread the sunshine. to see many other schools excelling is a very good sign!:cheers::cheers:
USANT is certainly a big name in the competition these days.
btw i'm just curious: the big banner in the parade photo reads "2nd Bicol Region Military Parade Competition". why "2nd"? the regional military parade competition has been on easily for at least 35 years now, i believe.
^^I luv the bus! ful of character ha
a slice of life!

When your children grow older, they will always look back to fond memories spent together as a family... at how fun and care free life was then. Being much older, they will appreciate your having made time for them. I wish more parents would do the same… then we would have ‘HAPPIER’ children!

Most probably the Archdiocese of Caceres will no longer create another prelature, since it has Libmanan ( the biggest district ) a new diocese. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th district will be enough to maintain the Archdiocese.

Naga Boy September 12th, 2011, 08:17 AM Move over mami, chicken inasal and lechon manok.
The kind of restaurants that are opening in Magsaysay Avenue have definitely leveled up in kind and in choices.
Mexicali, Yellow Cab, Carlo's Pizza, Kopi Roti, Starbucks, The Coffee Beanery (TCB), Laksa, Little Asia, Grissini to name a few. These upscale specialty restos are usually not found in small provincial cities like Naga.
But they are now coming slowly in our city.
And then there is this boast of the provincial executive of his province’s tremendous strides in tourism, a claim that many in the national media are skeptical about.

More: http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/56721/malacanang-mum-on-binay-recommendations-for-marcos-burial
LRay may be for Marcos' burial at the Libingan but i don't think it's prudent for him to speak for the entire province on this matter. :ohno::ohno::ohno:
better for him to make a reliable survey first to verify if this is the majority opinion of the people of CamSur. during the time of the late dictator CamSur as well the whole of Bikol were known as strongly anti-Marcos!
and i do not think we should be "indebted" to him for the construction of maharlika highway. the people should never be indebeted to him or to any government official for work that is, in fact, part of the job description and the fulfillment of the function of their office. :ohno::ohno::ohno:
with all the corruption during the Marcos regime what are we to be indebted for? :ohno::ohno::ohno:
i hope the recent CamSur-Ilocos Norte sisterhood does not simply mean all-out support to anything and everything Marcos. they have not even acknowledged, nor apologized nor made restitution for the injustices done.

Naga Boy September 12th, 2011, 02:45 PM Translacion 2011
The traditional translacion started at the
old Penafrancia Shrine on a sunny Friday afternoon...
http://i1009.photobucket.com/albums/af218/rrntcaceres/Traslacion/090920116270.jpg
It was a beautiful day...
the procession started early
with students from different schools taking the lead...
http://i1009.photobucket.com/albums/af218/rrntcaceres/Traslacion/090920116269.jpg
I joined the group of the Village Montessori
students and faculty on the slow trek
to Naga Cathedral...
http://i1009.photobucket.com/albums/af218/rrntcaceres/Traslacion/Village.jpg
The procession began at 12 noon...
it was orderly
and surprisingly fun....
In each street corner are brass bands
playing live religious music....
http://i1009.photobucket.com/albums/af218/rrntcaceres/Traslacion/090920116271.jpg
http://i1009.photobucket.com/albums/af218/rrntcaceres/Traslacion/090920116278.jpg
...prayer booths with people reciting the novena...

http://i1009.photobucket.com/albums/af218/rrntcaceres/Traslacion/090920116309.jpg
I was overhelmed
by the sights and sounds of the city...

http://i1009.photobucket.com/albums/af218/rrntcaceres/Traslacion/090920116276.jpg

... and touched by the sea of people
that came from all over the Philippines
converging in Naga for the special occasion....

http://i1009.photobucket.com/albums/af218/rrntcaceres/Traslacion/090920116291.jpg
We arrived in Centro in about an hour...

http://i1009.photobucket.com/albums/af218/rrntcaceres/Traslacion/090920116295.jpg
http://i1009.photobucket.com/albums/af218/rrntcaceres/Traslacion/090920116296.jpg
I took a glimpse of Caby's Cabana,
where we reserved one of the balconies
for our family and employees
for private viewing of translacion later...
http://i1009.photobucket.com/albums/af218/rrntcaceres/Traslacion/090920116297.jpg
...no one was there yet.
We went on with our march to the
Naga Cathedral....

http://i1009.photobucket.com/albums/af218/rrntcaceres/Traslacion/090920116302.jpg
The procession moved fast that some devotees
were joking that we were in a Fun Run.
But there was some truth to that...
we were virtually running and having fun
doing it for Ina...
...indeed it was a fun run...

We arrived at the beautiful cathedral
shortly before 2 PM
as the sky started to darken....

with white a yellow baloons...
the color of our Lady.

We readied our balloons for release when
as the image came closer....

Again we waited for the coming of Ina's Image...
and She initally appeared at the corner of the road,

sonofignatius September 13th, 2011, 12:45 PM Peñafrancia rites begin
Article | September 13, 2011 - 2:57am | By Sonny Sales
http://www.voxbikol.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/400xY/Voyadores600.JPG
NAGA CITY (Sep. 10, 2011) –Thousands of pilgrims and devotes from all over Bicol converged in this city on Friday (Sept. 10) for the traditional “Traslacion Processional” a 19th century religious rite, which starts the 9-day celebration of the feast of Bicolandia’s patroness, the Virgen of Peñafrancia.
On Friday’s homely at the Peñafrancia Shrine, after a penitential procession at dawn, Naga City Archbishop Leonardo Z. Legazpi, OP. DD appealed to the public and devotes stressing “ that once again the orderly celebration of the “Traslacion” and other Peñafrancia rites would depend on the conduct of its devotees.”
It the run up to last year’s Peñafrancia Tercentenary celebration (1710 - 2010) the Archbishop called for a “renewal on the Peñafrancia devotion”.
The Archbishop conducted dialogues with the City government of Naga to make the 9-day celebration exclusive to religious rites, andthe church had appealed to stop the commercialization of the religious event, and discipline vandals and drunken “Voyadores” (bearers of the Peñafrancia image in a procession).
In response, barangay Peñafrancia chairman, Jeffrey Moralde, imposed a long-standing ordinance for a Liquor-ban starting Thursday evening, prohibiting stores all along Peñafrancia Ave and the procession route in selling beer and gin.
Since last year, the “Voyadores” have been organized into religious fraternities called, “Confradia de San Jose”, wearing designated colored t-shirts during the procession, in accordance with their parishes in the Archdiocese of Caceres where they belong.
In Friday’s procession, about 3,000 members of the “Guardias de Maria” from 3 districts of the province kept the peace and order within the perimeter of the Peñafrancia carriage augmenting the fielded PNP and army personnel.
Last year, the Peñafrancia carriage was redesigned into an oblong-shaped “Andas”, weighing some 3-tons and covered with aluminum plates that made it difficult for rowdy “voyadores” to climb the carriage.
This year, the 6-hour procession followed the original 19th century route from the Peñafrancia Shrine to the Naga Cathedral with stops in 7 altar-stations along the route.
Official Church estimates claims nearly a million people filled the procession route from the Peñafrancia Avenue to the grounds of the Naga Cathedral starting 12 noon until 5:00 pm.
According to the Caceres Commission on Communication (CCCOM) Naga’s media office of the Catholic Church, the celebration of the 300-Tercentenary of the Peñafrancia last year also coincided with the declaration of President Benigno Aquino III under Proclamation No.33, declaring Naga City and Camarines Sur province as “Pilgrimage City and Province.” (SONNY SALES)

sonofignatius September 14th, 2011, 06:57 AM RodMagaru: Movie Review of IKAW ANG PAGIBIG (Marilou Diaz Abaya Film)
http://rodmagaru.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/2790911711_a52a947bc7.jpg
Last night September 12, Star Cinema held its Red Carpet Premiere Night which I attended. Glad to see some of the highly acclaimed directors attended the premiere including Olive Lamasan, Laurice Guillen and Cathy Garcia Molina. Also glad that Director Marilou Diaz Abaya was also there.
Endorsed by the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, the Association of Catholic Universities and the Manila Archdiocese and Parochial Schools, Association, Inc. Star Cinema and The Marilou Diaz Abaya Film Institute presents IKAW ANG PAGIBIG, is a religious family-drama that commemorates the tercentenary of the devotion to Our Lady of Peñafrancia, the patroness of the Bicol Region in the Philippines.
At first I was hesitant to see the film not because I don’t like the film. But rather it was a Marilou Diaz Abaya. But after seeing the movie, I am so overwhelmed that I want to share the experience watching her latest masterpiece!
The movie revolves around a young, contemporary, rebellious woman Vangie Cruz (Ina Feleo), whose family life and career as a video editor are disrupted when her only brother, a newly ordained priest, Fr. Johnny (Marvin Agustin), is diagnosed of Acute Myeloid Leukemia. As a sibling, Vangie is called upon to be a donor for Fr. Johnny’s bone marrow transplant. At first, Vangie is very reluctant. She has a clinical phobia for medical procedures, the reasons for which are rooted in an attempted, but botched, abortion which she suffered through many years earlier and has since been troubled about. Her life is saved by Dr. Joey Lucas (Jomari Yllana) with whom she has a love child, and whom she eventually marries.
http://rodmagaru.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/ikaw-ang-pagibig.jpg
Vangie’s dysfunctional family gravitates around Fr. Johnny, and in their struggle to cope with his illness, find themselves drawn to Ina, begging for her intercession. Their prayers are answered, not so much by way of a miraculous cure for Fr. Johnny, but by the grace of conversion, of love, of forgiveness, reconciliation, and hope.
The message of the movie is very clear, reconciliations. I love how it tackles the traditions for Catholics specifically for INA, Our Lady of Penafrancia and how a family resolves issues with the help of what they believe in. It was indeed an excellent movie for the whole family and devotees. The film is excellent in its story, execution including all of the cast’ performances. I’ve heard that Unitel was initially wanted to produce the film but they backed out that’s why the Archdiocese of Caceres helped the production to finish it.
Ina Feleo gave justice to the role. At first all I see is Judyann Santos playing the part (She was the original choice) but upon looking Feleo’s attack to the character makes me appreciate her more. Jomari and Marvin Agustin’s characters in the film is like everyone of us. I actually don’t know what to say, people may or may not watch this but still grateful for Starcinema to have distributed a film like this. The story is mainly of love, of forgiveness, reconciliation, and hope.
I encourage students to see this film. If you are a devotee, you should watch this. I realized that we may not always get what we wanted, what we asked for, but the film will tell us that upon every pains and trials and tribulations we are having, God is with us. I like what Eddie Garcia said,
“Samahan mo si Ina sa paanan ni Hesus na nakapako sa pagdadalamhati. Doon matatagpuan mo na malapit ka sa pagmamahal nya.” In this part I cried.
http://rodmagaru.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/jomari-yllana-ikaw-ang-pagibig-242x300.jpg
My 5 favorite scenes that moved me are:
1. Flashback of someone pointed a gun to Marvin Agustin and the latter said, “Mahal ka ng Diyos.”
2. Shamaine Buencamino told Ina feleo, “Mahal kita. Kagaya ng sa kapatid mo.
3. Birthday celebration at the hospital.
4. Ina Feleo confession to Marvin Agustin.
5. Confrontation of Nonie and Shamaine Buencamino.
The film has been Graded “A” by the Cinema Evaluation Board, and Rated PG-13 by the Movie and Television Ratings and Classification Board (MTRCB). Opens Tomorrow, SEPTEMBER 14 NATIONWIDE.
HIGHLY COMMENDABLE!

oragon.com September 14th, 2011, 07:16 AM CEB takes delivery of 4 new planes, adds more flights
By EMMIE V. ABADILLA
September 13, 2011
MANILA, Philippines — Cebu Pacific is adding more flights and destinations for its passengers as it takes the delivery of four more brand-new aircraft, with three A320 planes scheduled to arrive this month to October and a fourth due in December.
CEB is scheduled to add flights from Manila to Davao (7 to 8 times daily), Tacloban (4 to 5 times daily), Boracay (13 to 14 times daily), Dumaguete (2 to 3 times daily), Naga (3 to 4 times daily) and Cagayan de Oro (6 to 7 times daily), among others.
Furthermore, the airline will also launch a new destination, Tawi-Tawi, on October 14, with the start of our Zamboanga to Tawi-Tawi flights. A Cagayan de Oro-Iloilo route will also be inaugurated on the same day.
“Both routes will increase access to these key trade and tourism centers in the country, remarked CEB VP for Marketing and Distribution Candice Iyog.
The arrival of the four new planes in the last quarter of 2011 ‘benefits the travelling public and affirms our commitment to give even more people the chance to travel by air, to boost tourism and trade in all its destinations,’ she added.
Earlier, CEB had announced it has ordered 30 new Airbus A321neo and 7 A320 aircraft.
The order at list price is valued at USD3.8 billion, the largest single aircraft order ever made by a Philippine carrier. The A321neos will be a first of its type to operate in the Philippines, being a larger and longer-haul version of the familiar Airbus A320.
The orders for A320 and A321neo aircraft will be delivered between 2015 and 2021. These are on top of firm orders for 18 Airbus A320 aircraft to be delivered from the 2nd half of 2011 until 2014.
CEB is likewise scheduled to take delivery of 2 Airbus A320 aircraft on operating lease agreements in 2012.
At present, CEB operates 10 Airbus A319, 15 Airbus A320 and 8 ATR-72 500 aircraft. By the end of 2011, CEB will be operating a fleet of 37 aircraft with an average age of less than 3.5 years, one of the most modern aircraft fleets in the world.

hakz2007 September 14th, 2011, 07:23 AM Imee Marcos joins CamSur division opponents
LAOAG CITY—Ilocos Norte Gov. Imee Marcos has joined opponents of a bill that would break up Camarines Sur with the creation of a new province to be called Nueva Camarines.
“We have no new room for a new province,” she said, reflecting on the fact that Ilocos also suffered from its own breakup into a north and south Ilocandia and Abra in 1818.
“There is no more division and that’s that,” she added.
She had just signed a sister province agreement with Camarines Sur Gov. Luis Raymund Villafuerte, who had been lobbying against the measure that is being supported by his father, Rep. Luis Villafuerte Sr. and former Rep. Arnulfo Fuentebella, a former ally of the governor who is on his last term as congressman.
The bill passed the House with a vote of 229 in favor and one against. http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/58183/imee-marcos-joins-camsur-division-opponents

I think the writers of the Pro Nueva Camarines thing are paid hags (I mean paid hacks)
I totally agree :okay:

if they be doubtful about the number of tourists coming in CamSur boasted by the governor, why don't they get the stats from DOT?? :D if they are still doubtful then these writers should blame DOT instead
yeah. those naysayers are only basing their stats from hotels but DOT counts also those who've stayed in resorts and even registered homestay accommodation.
According to DOT there are more than 160 tourist accommodation facilities in CamSur with 3,050 rooms. Recently, there are 300 DOT newly-registered homestay accommodations in Naga.

L-Ray looks like courting the Marcoses for NO votes in the Senate. Sen. Bongbong Marcos is the chairman of the Committee on Local Government in the Senate. Chances are, the bill will be set aside and forgotten. I hope so.

hakz2007 September 14th, 2011, 09:18 AM Tourism industry booming in Naga as guides tapped
Naga City—With a team of guides around, a boom in tourism couldn’t be far behind.
This city has realized the key role that guides could play in its surging tourism industry, deciding to train guides in August and deploy them in time for the Peñafrancia Festival, perhaps the country’s biggest feast in terms of attendance.
Alec Santos, city tourism and culture and arts officer, said the city government started a training program in August to meet demand for tour guides as an estimated one million pilgrims and devotees were expected to descend on the city for the Peñafrancia.
The city’s tourism industry is booming, he said, as it recorded 600,000 tourist arrivals last year and is enjoying an occupancy rate in its hotels of 70 percent year-round.More: http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/58187/tourism-industry-booming-in-naga-as-guides-tapped

hakz2007 September 14th, 2011, 09:36 AM Drunken ‘voyadores’ still Peñafrancia headache
NAGA CITY—Drunkenness during the procession is still a “hard habit to break” for the voyadores.
Even before the image of the Our Lady of Peñafrancia can be carried out of the shrine in Barangay Peñafrancia here for the translacion (ritual transfer), eight voyadores were already playing with bottles in a nearby convenience store, just 500 meters from the shrine, evidently under the influence of liquor.
Along the stretch of Peñafrancia Avenue, where the image of the Virgin Mary would be carried on its way to the Naga Metropolitan Cathedral, many voyadores are seated along the thoroughfare, some of whom are drinking beer in bottles or can, also tipsy from drinking. hakz2007 September 14th, 2011, 09:37 AM Depositors remain calm amid LBC bank closure
DESPITE the closure, some depositors of the LBC Development Bank are confident that they can get their savings back owing to their previous experience with other closed banks.
Some depositors went to the lone LBC Bank branch in Gorordo Avenue, Cebu City, a day after operations were suspended.
Retired teacher Virginia Kho said the bank holds her savings from three decades of work as a teacher.
Kho said she was a victim of bank closures two other times before and knows what to expect of a bank under receivership of the Philippine Deposit Insurance Commission (PDIC).
“The last time was with one of the rural banks of the Legacy Group of Companies in Naga City. I’m confident that I can still get my deposits because I was able to receive my money after the past two banks also closed,” she said. Currently celebrating its 43rd Charter anniversary is the City of Iriga with my friend Mayor Madel Alfelor Gazmen spearheading the celebration.
As in all Irigueño celebrations, Mayor Madel imported guests from Manila to be part of the happy occasion. Douglas Nierras, who has been adopted by Iriga, Gladys Reyes and Geoff Eigenmann sat as board of judges in the Majorette Competition with only three pre-selected contestants composed of Agro Technical School, Ceferino Arroyo High School and La Consolacion College. hakz2007 September 14th, 2011, 11:52 AM The beautiful Lake Buhi
WHILE IN IRIGA, we (along with Nestor Cuartero of Manila Bulletin and Dindo Balares of Balita) had the chance to take a sidetrip to the beautiful Lake Buhi, home of the smallest fish called Sinarapan, as arranged by the ever helpful Angelica Matubis Baylon from Mayor Gazmen’s office.
It’s sad that most parts of the road going there were in a bad state of disrepair. Mayor Gazmen wanted to repair it but it’s actually under the responsibility of the provincial government of Gov. L Ray Villafuerte, so her hands are tied.
But the lake itself is really a marvel. It could be an excellent tourist destination if properly developed. We did get to visit a private resort there owned by Cyrus Obsuna, who’s actually based in Mactan, Cebu. It has a huge 18-room inn and four well designed cabanas built by the lakeside along with a beautiful swimming pool. It’s really a great vacation place. http://www.showbiz-portal.com/2011/09/beautiful-lake-buhi.html

by Pilar S. Mabaquiao
SAN JOSE, Antique, Sept 14 (PIA) -- Members of the Antique Chamber of Commerce and Industry went on a study and learning visit to Naga City to learn about best practices of Metro Naga Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MNCCI)
The ACCI learned about strategies undertaken by the MNCCI to become effective partners of local government units and national agencies particularly in developing local businessmen, Romeo Baldevia Executive Director of AFON disclosed.
ACCI has also gained insight on how the chamber could sustain the operation of small entrepreneurs despite the challenge of multi-nationals and big business establishments like malls and supermarkets.
The “Great Naga Sale” Baldevia said, was among the strategies they employed so that consumers could patronize small businessmen and keep the local market alive.
The Antique businessmen also learned about waste disposal practices, and maintenance of cleanliness in business establishments.
The visit coincided with the holding of Bicol Business Week where ACCI was privileged to join some of their activities.
Among the participants in the learning trip were six officers of ACCI (six) led by Nelson Liu Chang, ACCI President, Jocelyn Perez of DTI, Romeo Baldevia of AFON and Hermina Lagdamen, Local Economic Development (LED) Strategy Officer of TRIAS. (JCM/PSM/PIA6 Antique)

hakz2007 September 15th, 2011, 02:56 AM Gov says CamSur split not in sister province’s agenda
NAGA CITY—Camarines Sur Representative Luis R. Villafuerte (third district), said Ilocos Norte Governor Imee Marcos could have been fed false information by his son, Camarines Sur Governor Luis Raymund “LRay” Villafuerte, on the proposal to divide Camarines Sur.
The younger Villafuerte, however, said it might have been his father who got it wrong. He said his main purpose in going to Ilocos Norte was to pursue a sisterhood agreement between his and Marcos’ province.
“As shown by facts, the proposed province to be called Nueva Camarines meets the prerequisites of provincehood,” said the elder Villafuerte.
The younger Villafuerte, however, said following his father’s logic, “then at least 74 new provinces can be created” which won’t benefit the people. More: http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/58821/gov-says-camsur-split-not-in-sister-province%E2%80%99s-agenda

hakz2007 September 15th, 2011, 04:07 AM The most honest man in the world
He died last Sunday. He had been admitted to Lourdes Hospital in Kalentong a couple of weeks ago for pneumonia, but his condition grew worse and his kidneys were affected. He underwent dialysis three times and seemed to improve. But as things like this often go, the improvement was deceptive. When it seemed like he was ready to be released from the hospital, he died.
His name was Leon Pilar. For as long as I’ve known him, I’ve always referred to him as Mr. Pilar. Not unlike Sidney Poitier telling Rod Steiger in “In The Heat of the Night,” “They call me Mr. Tibbs.” The “Mr. Pilar” as a sign of respect however would come only later. At first that was just the way my father introduced him to us.
Mr. Pilar will be buried this afternoon at the Peñafrancia Cemetery. To his fellow Nagueños, if you can pull yourself away from the fiesta for a bit, you might want to join the funeral and condole with his family. If not, just send a prayer his way to commend him to the Big Auditor in the Sky, however unlikely it is that his life will be audited and found wanting. I personally wouldn’t mind seeing his epitaph read: “Here lies Mr. Leon Pilar:

hakz2007 September 15th, 2011, 04:11 AM Bicol Express now runs daily
MANILA, Philippines - Here’s good news for Bicolanos and tourists planning to visit Naga City to celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Penafrancia this month.
The Philippine National Railways (PNR) announced that it has resumed its operations and now offers daily trips at special fares from Manila to Naga and vice versa as part of the celebration. The feast of Penafrancia has become a yearly tourist attraction in the Bicol region.
PNR general manager Junio Ragragio Jr., said the Bicol Express resumed its Manila-Naga City operation since early last week. “The temporary halting of operation during the month of August was in part to prepare the PNR to ensure that our commuters who wish to travel to Naga City to celebrate the feast of Penafrancia can avail of our train services,” he explained. CamSur gov files plunder charge vs deputy House speaker
MANILA, Philippines – Camarines Sur Governor Luis Raymund Villafuerte Jr. filed plunder and graft charges Thursday against House Deputy Speaker Arnulfo Fuentebella, his wife and two sons for allegedly amassing more than P80 million in ill-gotten wealth from government funds to finance personal projects.
The governor charged that the Fuentebellas spent public funds on infrastructure projects inside their sprawling 50,000-square-meter property, where a P25-million mansion is located, in Sitio Elis Point, Barangay Patitinan, Sagnay.
These included a P15-million road to the property, which is surrounded by a fence and gate; a P2-million multi-purpose building; P2-million concreting of road; and P3.5-million concreting of the multi-purpose pavement; and a P3-million structure that is supposedly a lighthouse.
What was built was not actually a lighthouse but the viewdeck of the Fuentebellas Resort, he said.More: http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/59205/camsur-gov-files-plundercharge-vs-deputy-house-speaker
garzland September 15th, 2011, 11:37 AM ^^Gov. Lray should have filed it earlier before Cong. Fuentebella filed a bill for the division of CamSur. As I see it, had Cong. Fuentebella not filed this bill, Gov. Lray won't also file this plunder charge to Cong. Arnulfo...
