salamat! :)

Magsaysay strip is not only a food and lifestyle strip but also becoming a wellness area. Just a stone thrown away at ADZ is the soon-to-open Bench Fix Saloon.

That's true Pau.

Aside from CACI, there are other Wellness Clinics in Magsaysay Avenue like Skin Systems (by Dr. Mary Jane Uy), Manila based Evolution Salon and Spa (at Villa Caceres Hotel), Adelheid Beauty Garden (formerly Gastoff) and the soon to open Bench Fix Salon.

Naga City is also home to a Cosmetic Surgeon that offers a very private Cosmetic and Wellness Center in Plaza Medica, and a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon that operates Ravavier. Both these practitioners are the only surgeons in this specialty in the Bicol and based their practice here Naga City.

Infos I got during the joint STI-Naga City Local Job Fair held today:

1. The lot fronting Puregold Mall is now being contested by 2 projects; the AMA new campus and a hotel.

2. Puregold will indeed occupy Robertson Centro.

3. Eurotel construction to start next week.

4. The "much heated" Sogohotel is now battling petition from concerned groups especially from the academe.

5. Robinsons Place at Almeda Highway.

Details of some projects which the PESO office revealed requested to be withheld. :)

Info coming from two Robinson's insiders, AVP for Mall Operations and someone from RLC the acquired the said property, both names I mentioned in my past posts (which I should not have done in the first place:)). Naga City would have an operational Robinson's Mall by 2013. We could assume that the construction would begin by early or mid 2012.

Robinson's lot is located at the Almeda Highway just a block away from the Diversion Road, apprently beside the PNB property at the corner of the two highways.

I understand they already started dumping and leveling the area.

What's wrong with Sogotel?

If the city has allowed some sleazy local owned drive- in hotels that allows short- time check ins, why not Sogotel?

The hotel is being percieved wrongly by these people.:ohno:

I hope they would listen to the wisdom of Ms. Melanie Marquez in one of her melanisms...

...do not judge Sogotel, it is not a book:lol:.

NB:

That's not exactly what she said. Her exact words were: Do not judge my brother (Joey Marquez)- he is not a book.:)

This year, we chose to be at Avenue Plaza Hotel again! It's the best hotel in Naga City! How awesome that we are here to spend Christmas. :)

We checked in around 3pm. It was a rainy day but it doesn't matter, Christmas day is always good day. The interior is lovely as always. The staff are charming and always courteous.

We were so excited! The room we got, had a little living and dining area. Everything looked so welcoming and warm. I wish my future pad looks like this (if not better). I even joked my Mom to ask the owner if we could buy this room (like a condo) someday. It would be so awesome to go home to something that looked like this everyday.

^^Great news for the welcoming new year!!!

:banana::banana::banana:

1.When will Robinsons start its construction, pres?
2. Are you referring to the supposedly Ayala lot?
3. Will the Puregold takeover of Robertson happen as early as first quarter of next year?

2. Yes Sir! the lot supposedly for Ayala.
3. As to the date, failed to inquire about it.

Also, PESO staff mentioned that Puregold will also occupy the Robinsons supermarket once Robinsons Place open its door here in Naga.

Anyway it's the thought that counts.

Same thoughts doc :)

Though I'm part of the frontrunner of this petition I still find little credence on our case against the construction of Sogohotel :ohno:

On this site will open a boutique

welcome to the Heart of Bikol, Moonleaf!

there's a Moonleaf in Loyola Hgts, QC, some blocks away from our place. it's quite popular among students and neighborhood residents.

just got a Wintermelon Milk Tea this an hour ago. it's one of the best teas they have- the taste of tea stands out.
Let me taste you Moonleaf next year! :D

Green Monday: Green Star of Naga City, Camarines Sur

When Mayor John G. Bongat was elected as City Mayor of Naga City, Camarines Sur, the city undergone series of changes especially in terms of cleanliness and beautification. There emerge these beautiful shining stars made of colored plastics. Inscripted on those stars is Naga City’s new tagline “Naga Smiles to the World”.

http://www.hobbiesandeverything.info/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/11252011290.jpg

The word SMILES means S – see, M – meet, I – invest, L – live, E – experience, S – study. The Naga City government is inviting the world to come and experience the new Naga City. The stars have assorted colors that brightens the plaza. But, I only took a photo of this green star for my green Monday post (LOL

http://www.hobbiesandeverything.info/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/11252011288.jpg

For this Christmas season, the city plaza is decorated with fabulous Christmas Lights. These decorations will surely delight visitors and Naguenos as well.

Linking this post to Green Monday!

In a conservative environment, a Sogotel investment will definitely raise eyebrows and howls of protest from different groups. I just hope that Sogotel will somehow deviate from that "very private" look e.g. barely no windows, lobby that conceals those who are inside, secret passageways for guests and really make their Naga City hotel a "family friendly" hotel. I also hope that the design of the building will be somewhat pleasing to the eyes as Sogo hotels in Metro Manila are devoid of architectural beauty (just loud colors of yellow & red painted on its buildings) and I think serves majority of customers for that quick fix :)

Pero I believe a Sogo hotel in Naga City will be very different from that in Manila kasi yung demographic usually of travellers going to CamSur are budget travellers and families. Basically, the hotel will cater to these market kaya this will be a nice addition and investment to the city in general :)

I also believe that Sogotel Naga is targeting a different kind of market since it is located right in the CBD 2, right beside the very busy Central Bus Terminal, right across SM City Naga, few steps away from STI Naga and a block away from Puregold Naga.

It is not an ideal place to hide some misdeeds as it is right at the center of the busiest district of Naga City.

I think the problem with Sogotel Naga is that they had a really expolosive start by literally painting the city red with their loud- red colored and suggestive ads before they started constructing the hotel.

This act got into the conservative nerves of some Naguenos.

5th 7-Eleven in Naga City
Caceres Street

http://i1239.photobucket.com/albums/ff507/Nagacity/074-1.jpg

7 Eleven with its very rapid expansion in Naga is redefining the corner store concept in the City.

5 branches in Naga and a total of 7 (2 stores in Pili) in less than half a year.

A 7- Eleven in every corner of the city.:)

Anyway it's the thought that counts.

Additional Comment:

Aside from avoiding judgement to the hotel as it is not a book, conservative Naguenos should also stop from barking as Sogotel is not a tree.:lol::lol:

Last part is just a twist from the popular Melanisms.:)

^^I also believe that Sogotel, in accordance with its prime location, will cater for backpackers and family vacationers. If they are into a seductive atmosphere, they won't choose that prime location.

But I agree doc... They themselves have given us the idea of what Sogotel is... But I hope our assumption is correct...

Nagueños to honor Bicol martyrs, heroes

NAGA CITY --- Commemoration of the 15 Bicol Martyrs’ 115th year since they had given their lives for freedom promises to be more meaningful and colorful with more of the martyrs’ surviving heirs and descendants, and other groups and organizations expected to be present during ceremonies to be held January 4, next year, at Plaza Quince Martires, in this city’s downtown district.

Uniformed soldiers of the Philippine Army’s 9th Infantry Division have also been invited to extend honors and the ritual taps and 21-gun salute during the ceremonies.

Themed “Looking Back. Looking Forward,” the city government and the Division of City Schools have decided to take advantage of the other half of the occasion by presenting to the public the young winners and medalists in the recently concluded 2011 Batang Pinoy national championship games that the city hosted last December 9-13.

Gov. Villafuerte prioritizes upgrading of CamSur RHUs

In yet another novel and innovative initiative to enhance delivery of social services to CamSur constituents, Gov. LRay Villafuerte directed the prioritization of the renovation and upgrading of rural health units (RHUs) in the province.

This local initiative will ideally complement a national program dubbed by the Department of Health (DOH) as Basic Emergency Maternal Obstetrics and Newborn Care – BEMONC.

Thus, a major feature of the renovation drive will be the provision of modern and hygenic birthing facility in every unit, an essential health service that has been discovered deficient in many localities particularly those with no hospital facilities.

Once the project is institutionalized in CamSur RHUs, the health facility-based deliveries will increase and maternal morbidity and mortality will be reduced.

The Ten Little Things

PROCLAMATION No. 2011-03 by Mayor John G. Bongat declared the City of Naga as a “Zone of Discipline” with a call to all residents to adopt the moral values and responsible citizenship summed up in what he personally penned and refers to as “The Ten Little Things a Proud Nagueño Should Do.”

The “Ten Little Things” proclamation of the mayor is truly provoking if not inspiring and timely. Bared is his strong desire to have the city as a zone of discipline ---- something that should be disseminated even among elementary and high school students ---- something that should be included in the curriculum, in the homeroom hour, in the Sibika and Makayabayan subjects ----- something that must be printed in all back covers of city-funded books distributed to elementary and high school students.

Lofty are the words in the “Ten Little Things” no matter how little they are. But if these words remain as words separated from thoughts that touch ground, the desired zone of discipline will zoom out. As Shakespeare says “My words fly up, my thoughts remain below; words without thoughts never to heaven go.”

Every Naganon is asked to think positive and say positive things about Naga. But there are lots of the shenanigans in the city ---- about the non-transparency of the year’s budget, about how projects are bid and awarded, about the way ordinances are passed, about the influence and weight exerted on the Sanggunian by politicians, about information on the SALN of city elected officials, the contracts and loans entered into by the city. It is better that these shenanigans be exposed than be left to pursue their dark and evil designs.

Every taxpayer in the City of Naga is asked to keep his surroundings clean and green. This, however, demands a counterpart from the city, in terms of a workable program and a team of working personnel to provide support and services to the citizens. The waste segregation scheme initiated in the city under the charge of then Kagawad Simeon Adan had a good start but soon fizzled out and was not revived. On the first week after the Naga City People’s Mall was opened, it had clean stairs and not a piece of wrapper could be seen on them. Look at them now. They speak eloquently on how green and clean the city is.

Every Naganon must respect the elderly and their fellow men at all times. A random check on how complaints filed by the elderly are handled by the city will bear how much respect the city extends to the elderly. Respect for the elderly demands that they must not be looked down as a political material to be used for propaganda --- to be called upon by the city executive in a show of numbers to support his political agenda. Respect demands a looking back on – from the Latin re-specire --- somebody in a show of honor and esteem for him.

The Ten Little Things ordinance demands that one must be on time, be punctual in one’s work and to work hard for one’s future. It demands that those in City Hall must be in the office regularly and punctually. They must be in their respective offices from 8:00 to 12:00 and from 1:00 to 5:00 no less, but may even be more, ready to serve with a smile and not make things difficult and hard for the people.

The Ten Little Things ordinance demands honesty in dealing with others. The truism, as Hamlet puts it, is: “To be honest, as this world goes, is to be one man picked out of ten thousand.” And the number of public servants in City Hall is not even ten thousand.

The Ten Little Things ordinance commends that drugs should be shunned. The police blotter and the cases filed in courts will tell us how serious we are about our call against drugs. Haphazard filing of cases against drug offenders often leads to the dismissal of these cases. Reports on drug suspects are not acted upon promptly.

The Ten Little Things ordinance includes obedience to traffic rules and regulations and to city ordinances. Why then have the fruit vendors go beyond the area they are permitted to occupy, even to apportion a part of the street to lay out their items? Why are there special considerations given to big businessmen who use the sidewalk for parking their trucks and vehicles?

The Ten Little Things ordinance desires to have illegal activities reported. But the excuse of the police for not coming fast enough ranges from that they don’t have gasoline for their vehicles to that the reported activity is not within their zone of responsibility.

The Ten Little Things ordinance commands that taxes must be paid promptly and correctly --- yet what assurance is there that taxes paid are spent wisely and scrupulously by the city and not budgeted for vacant positions so that their corresponding salaries may be declared as savings and used at the discretion of the City Mayor?

The Ten Little Things ordinance encourages that locally made products must be bought and the Naga City People’s Mall must be patronized ---- yet how can people be encouraged if the Mall is dominantly selling segunda mano or ukay-ukay, which are hazardous to health and voodoo-friendly, and pirated CDs or DVDs, which are illegal items of trade, hunted by the Video Regulatory Board agents?

Every taxpayer in the City of Naga should think twice if the inspiring words of the “Ten Little Things” ordinance simply fly up, with thoughts remaining below. Such words without thoughts that touch our human life, never to heaven go.

Why not put it as part of regular tax incentive or probably part of ordinance or whatever that would oblige the building owners to repaint, let say, every two years) -- then the city government shall be the one to do all the things pertaining to repainting...

The city government has already introduced a number of tax incentives for various objectives. I think they have even offered some forms of incentives to vacant lot owners to maintain them clean and free of unwanted green growth.

With or without incentives, it should be the responsibility of every Naganon to maintain his immediate environment neat and tidy. Corollarily, building owners especially in the CBD owe it upon the city and its people to ensure that their buildings are well maintained and not an eyesore and a nuisance.:)

S&P withdraws Naga City credit rating, affirms ‘stability’ (http://www.bworldonline.com/content.php?section=Economy&title=S&P-withdraws-Naga-City-credit-rating,-affirms-%E2%80%98stability%E2%80%99&id=44122)

NAGA CITY has asked for the withdrawal of its credit rating from a foreign debt watcher, citing the local government’s strong financial standing.

Standard & Poor’s withdrew its BB- credit rating yesterday but nonetheless affirmed the “stable” outlook it gave Naga City.

A BB- credit rating puts it three notches below investment grade. The ratings agency defines the BB range as “less vulnerable in the near term but faces major ongoing uncertainties to adverse business, financial and economic conditions.”

“The ratings were subsequently withdrawn at the city’s request. Prior to the withdrawal, the outlook was stable,” S&P said in a statement released yesterday.

According to the Naga City government’s budget office, it withdrew the ratings issued “for practical reasons.”

“We felt that we don’t need the rating for now,” Frank M. Mendoza, city budget officer, said in a phone interview yesterday.

“The city is in a very liquid financial position [and as for total] borrowing capacity... we have yet to use around half of it,” he said, explaining that they still have a “good credit risk in such a way that it is okay for banks to lend us with low interest rates.”

Mr. Mendoza cited the city’s satisfactory revenue collection. “For several years now, we have had a comfortable surplus,” he said, adding that they might ask S&P for a credit rating again if interest rates go up and the city needs to maximize its borrowing capacity. The credit rating issuance, he said, costs the city government “around a million pesos.”

Mr. Mendoza said this is already the third rating S&P has given to Naga City, with the first having been initiated and funded by the World Bank about nine years ago during the term of former mayor and now Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse M. Robredo.

Mr. Mendoza, however, said that the city government also benefitted from S&P’s assessments and recommendations as to how they could exercise best practices and improve public service administration.

For one, S&P advised them to focus on the computerization of business-oriented transactions such as in the issuance of business permits.

Mr. Mendoza said they already have a computerized system in place but that “there is still room for improvement.” -- Aubrey E. Barrameda

Businessmen see PP partnership to flourish in 2012 in Naga (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=1&t=1&id=69919)
by Lizel S. Macatangay

NAGA City, Dec 27 (PIA) -- Serving as the voice of the local entrepreneurs, business units, and various industry sectors, the Metro Naga Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MNCCI) under the headship of its president, Phillip T. Imperial, looks forward for a thriving trade prospect in 2012 - a flourishing opportunity anchored on the vision of public-private partnership.

This was disclosed by Imperial during the chamber’s general membership meeting held this month here.

One of the highlights of the said gathering is the signing of covenant for good governance and memorandum of cooperation, binding various agencies in a commitment of service and cooperation in pursuance of the mutual endeavor for socio-economic development.

Imperial said that they are confident that the upcoming year will be another venue of growth and development in as so far as business venture and linkages are concerned. He said that the chamber has forged various agreements with different agencies in line with President Benigno Aquino’s directive on public–private partnership.

The chamber had sponsored various legs of the Bicol Business Week which has proven to be an excellent venue for national and local investors, exhibitors, and business enthusiasts. It showcased not only products but also technologies, services, and business prospects. It also helped in strengthening the foothold of various businesses in the growing regional market.

Imperial said that they will abide by the national government’s campaign to get rid of corruption and will adhere to the template of good governance as mandated by law.

Among other things, the chamber will also strongly seek President Aquino’s approval to renew the Philippine National Railways’ (PNR) corporate charter which is due to expire this 2013.

The railways, they believe, is vital tool for the promotion of local business and in forging important networks with future business endeavors.

MNCI will continue to live by its mission of providing a good business environment for the socio- economic development of Naga City and its adjoining municipalities in the Bicol Region. (MAL/LSM-PIA Camarines Sur)

Hi Kevin! Glad I could be part of the forum. I decided not to renew my contract so I can focus more on GPMS and Southern Luzon Business Review. Anyway, I think I can contribute more to Naga and Bicol as an entrep and a private citizen.

Anyway, here's the maiden issue of our newspaper. We'd appreciate your feedback so we can improve it in the next issues. :)

Bicol Express fares under study
By KRIS BAYOS
January 2, 2012

MANILA, Philippines — The government is assessing whether to retain discounted fares for the Bicol Express or start charging regular rates starting this year.

The Philippine National Railways (PNR) Board will decide the fare issue on January 10, according to General Manager Jun Ragrario.

The PNR operates the Bicol Express and the commuter line from Tutuban in Manila to Alabang in Muntinlupa City.

Since the Bicol Express resumed its daily operation from Manila to Naga City in Camarines Sur last June 29, fare rates are discounted by 30 percent. The promotional rates are said to be effective only until December.

“We are still assessing if there is a need to revert to the regular fare rates or if we can retain the discount,” Ragrario said.

While the PNR is able to cover the train’s operational costs with the discounting, reverting to the regular rates is inevitable especially once the rail line is extended to Albay.

The PNR last deployed a trip to Bicol in November 2006. Ridership then was pegged at 100,000 annually, with daily trips going to and from Bicol.

At present, the PNR Manila-Naga trip is deployed every day at 6:30 p.m. and fares are still on promotional rates.

The Business paper looks good Alec.

Congrats.

Is it available on the news stands? Is it open for subscription?

I like the cover story that shows Bicol Region's vast mineral potential and the billions of revenues generated from mining. With Albay cornering these biggest investors that generate billions of pesos in revenues, one would assume that the province is also getting garguantuan returns. However, this is not the case as pointed by Governor Salceda and he is now battling the system to correct this anomaly. Also to be considered is the effect of these mining companies to the environment which is in the case of Rapu-Rapu is not very good :ohno:

CamSur also has vast untapped mining resources but as the tourism mecca of Bicol, the province may opt to go the way of Palawan which is planning to ban mining altogether.

I don't know- just found the ad on the web and downloaded it in my computer.

I'll inquire from Mr. A (the owner the the Piazza) regarding this.

But that's a possibility as it was supposed to be occupied either by Conti's or Pancake House according to him last year. That was last year though but since he owns the Lifestyle Center- he is a very reliable source.

grabe ang Naga ngonian, dakol development. restos, bars, hotels, coffee and tea shops, malls and more. :) and also innovations in public service and in medical field.

I tried the "tusok-tusok" at Plaza Rizal last night, it was a different experience although they are selling same street foods but the ambiance is different. The stalls are organize and surroundings is clean. (the food is also clean, hehehe)

Good job for the city government for making Naga clean and beautiful. Naga is one the photogenic city in the country, day or night we have the best views of the city. :)

indeed the region as well as the country in general is mineral-rich. it's just that these resources are not handled/ managed well. ateneo de naga is quite active in both research on, and advocacy against the abuses in rapu-rapu.

Davao brand aiming to
boost tourism proposed
BY MAYA M. PADILLO

A brand that aims to boost the tourism industry of Davao City is now being processed after a multi-sectoral consultative meeting on the proposed Davao City tourism branding was held yesterday at the Grand Men Seng Hotel.

The overview of the proposal was presented by Eastgate Publishing president and Mabuhay Magazine editor-in-chief Simeon Ventura Jr., who presented the marketing plan, brand analysis, and target market.

According to Ventura, the brand should cater to the MICE market (meetings, incentives, conferences, exhibitions). The venue should also be acceptable across the board and could accommodate delegates.

He said the brand should assure the market that Davao has the infrastructure for MICE.

“Let the MICE market put Davao as competitive and worth the trip,” Ventura said.

Davao ranked sixth place in tourism among local destinations, with more than 300,000 visitors last year.

The successful brand imaging has been adopted by local destinations such as Cebu (“an island in the Pacific”), Camarines Sur (“CamSur”), and countries in Asia like India (“Incredible India”), Thailand (“Amazing Thailand”), Malaysia (“Malaysia Truly Asia”), and Indonesia (“Wonderful Indonesia”).

He said CamSur, which has only few natural attractions and is frequently hit by typhoons, has chosen tourism to drive growth and adopted a “build and they will come” approach. It built the CamSur Wakeboarding Center (CWC) that generates income and provides jobs and livelihood.

The approach has catapulted CamSur from 39th to 10th in local tourism.

“Davao has at least 20 attractions, unlike CamSur that has only two. If you want to do something, do it differently, do it out of the box. You have a Ferrari, and it’s time Davao drives a Ferrari,” Ventura said.

According to city tourism officer Jason Magnaye, the challenge now is to come up with a single name for Davao.

“This is an initiative of the city government to promote tourism in Davao. We should not be confused about what Davao is all about,” Magnaye said.

He said the brand will be launched before Holy Week.

A 21-gun salute for 15 Bicol martyrs
By Juan Escandor Jr.
Philippine Daily Inquirer
January 4th, 2012

In celebration of their 115th year of heroism, a 21-gun salute was bestowed on the “15 Bicol martyrs,” immortalized in a 30-foot monument at Plaza Quince Martires in Naga City, during a ceremony early Wednesday.

Jose B. Perez, program facilitator, said the 15 heroes of the 1896 Revolution against the Spanish colonial regime received the military honor after the entrance of colors and wreath offering at the foot of the monument.

Once described by historian Ambeth Ocampo as an “elaborate wedding cake,” the monument is topped by a woman symbolizing the Motherland with her fallen son. Two muses stand guard on both sides of the second level where an eagle is perched at the center. Around the circular base are carvings of the 15 martyrs.

Ocampo wrote that the martyrs were jailed for complicity with the Katipunan.

Ateneo future educator wins in model student search
January 5, 2012
By Rodolfo SB. Virtus Jr.

Ateneo de Naga University student leader and future educator Ma. Cienna A. Jaucian ranked second in the Search for ten Jose Rizal Model Students of the Philippines (JRMSP) 2011.

The ten winners were honored during the Knights of Rizal Centennial program on Rizal Day, December 30 at the Knights of Rizal ceremonial hall in Manila. Vice President Jejomar C. Binay, former Chief Justice Hilario W. Davide Jr. and Manila Mayor Alfredo S. Lim were among those who graced the program.

Ma. Cienna A. Jaucian, AB BSE English senior student, is the seventh JRMSP winner of ADNU. Before Jaucian, ADNU also topped the same Search for two consecutive years.

To become the school nominee, Jaucian first had to compete with the University’s other top student leaders in a school level paper screening and panel interview conducted by a screening committee convened by the Office of Student Affairs. From the hundreds of school nominees across the country, the Order of the Knights of Rizal named her as one of the 30 national finalists. She then faced prominent national figures from the Order in a make-or-break final interview last December 28 last year.

The screening committee and interview panel found Jaucian’s academic performance and leadership, the search’s criteria, were most outstanding, thereby epitomizing Rizalian qualities and the virtue of love of country, and serving as living model to her fellow youth.
Jaucian is a top academic scholar, being a consistent President Lister in all semesters that she has completed in the University. She is also a leader, writer and volunteer in school and community organizations.

As student leader of Pathways Youth Group from 2008 to present, she designed reading modules and spent many Saturdays teaching children at a beneficiary school. Similarly, in 2010 she was the project head of the College of Education’s brainchild program, Great Mind Read Session II.

Hey everyone,

I'll be flying to Naga next month and will be probably staying in Bicol Land Hotel. Any reviews about the hotel? Any bar/resto nearby that I should not dare miss? I'll be travelling with my boyfriend!

Thanks! :)

Good Morning ilivebacolod, welcome. If it's really in Naga City, maybe you are referring to Naga Land hotel in Elias Angeles St, just across E-mall. :)
For bar it would be one ride going to Magsaysay Ave, there is PUJ just infront of the hotel going to Magsaysay Ave.

For Restaurants it's just a walking distance.

New bug infests Bicol rice farms

PILI, Camarines Sur --- A new insect pest of rice was reported to have infested some rice farms in Bicol and Regions 7, 8 and 13.

The advisory on this pest was contained in the Memorandum issued last December 21, 2011 by Dr. Clarito M. Barron , director of the Bureau of Plant Industry, the DA attached agency receiving and consolidating reports from the field regarding plant infestation and other crops concerns. This pest was found to be infesting the rice panicle from flowering stage to milking stage which results to unfilled or damage dark-colored grains that eventually reduces yield.

The pest was temporarily identified by the Regional Crop Protection Center (RCPC) of DA Region 8 in Tacloban as Paromius longulus - subject for verification and formal identification by experts. it is called by different names by the other regions like rice seed bug, dirt-colored seed bug and rice grain bug.

The presence of this pest in Bicol was detected early October last year in 3 barangays in Ragay, Camarines Sur according to Dr. Evangeline C. de la Trinidad, chief of the Regional Crop Protection Center. Trinidad reported that 100 hectares of rice crops in Ragay were damaged. The extent of damage was estimated to be 50 to 70 percent.

Firecracker victims all-time low in Naga
By Shiena M. Barrameda

NAGA CITY --- Police in this city were pleasantly surprised at the all-time low number of firecracker victims as New Year 2012 came.

PO3 Tobias Bongon III confirmed that only seven cases of firecracker explosion victims and one stray bullet victim were recorded after the celebrations last January 1, 2011. The reports, he added, were culled by police from hospitals in this city last January 2.

He said that this number is considerably low compared to the almost 20 cases reported during the previous year.

He added that the cases this year were all considered as minor by attending physicians because they were caused only by ‘weak’ firecrackers allowed to be sold by the city government and the Bureau of Fire Protection here.

“These were only minor burns,” Bongon said. “There were no cases where fingers or hands were maimed by explosion or were amputated. Only one of these cases needed a surgery. One minor patient underwent surgery after a firecracker splinter went into his eye and damaged his cornea.”

MNCCI brings X’mas cheer to the needy
By Jason B. Neola

SEASON OF SHARING. Gina Fernandez, Barangay Carolina’s CSWDO coordinator, and Punong Barangay Alicia Saba (second and third from left upper picture) assist Bong Villacruz, Directors Ceferino Adviento and Charlemagne Seechung of Metro Naga Chamber of Commerce and Industry in handing over assorted grocery items to residents as part of MNCCI’s yearly outreach program. On lower picture, an elderly receives her gift from MNCCI staff Maricho Pobre and Lilia V. Antonio.

NAGA CITY --- At least 100 families identified by the City Social Welfare and Development Office as the “poorest of the poor” in Barangay Carolina, here, were listed as beneficiaries last Christmas of the social outreach program being undertaken every year by the Metro Naga Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MNCCI).

As in previous years, the the indigent residents were handed out grocery items and foodstuff for their noche buena.

MNCCI President Philip T. Imperial said the gift-giving activity is his group’s little way of bringing cheer to those who are less fortunate. “We offer them something they can partake of during the noche buena as they celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Other than the foodstuff, the families, especially those who have babies, also received blankets donated by the Development Bank of the Philippines-Naga.

City Hall receives 10 e-Bike units
By Gerald O. Enguero

e-BIKES. Naga City Mayor John G. Bongat watches as Vice Mayor Gabby H. Bordado tries one of the ten units of electric bicycles (e-Bikes) turned over by the United Nations to the city government last January 2, 2012. The environment friendly bicycles have been assigned to selected offices at city hall to expedite ‘delivery’ of services to the city’s stakeholders.

NAGA CITY --- The city government of Naga recently received ten units of electric bicycles, more known as e-Bikes, courtesy of the Climate Change Program of the United Nations through the Health and Wellness Empowerment for the Poor Program of Oscar G. Arcilla, Jr., a Nagueño technocrat based in Metro Manila.

A grateful City Mayor John G. Bongat immediately allocated the environment-friendly vehicles to seven offices at city hall with one unit each that will make best use of them in the delivery of services.

The eBikes can run for 65 kilometers or about three hours after they have been charged for seven hours at the cost of P15 compared to P50 consumed by gasoline fed motorcycles.

This city, according to Arcilla, is the first local government unit to receive the eBikes for free in line with the UN’s advocacy for clean environment.

City Environment & Natural Resources Officer Oscar P. Orozco, said e-bikes and other electric vehicles are one of the best contributions against air pollution.

The e-Bikes were distributed at one unit each to the city’s MEPO (Naga City People’s Mall office), City Civil Registrar, City Health office, Accounting Office, Public safety Office, City Assessor’s Office, and MetroPeso. The remaining three units will be available for pooling, c/o the City Mayor’s Office.

Hey everyone,

Thanks! :)

There is no Bicol Land Hotel in Naga but you may be referring to Naga Land Hotel.

The hotel is located at the City Center, right across E-Mall and mid size mall with Robinson’s Supermarket as an anchor.

It is also within the 24- hour restaurant strip in Naga which has almost all fast- food chains operating 24/7 like 2 McDonalds stores 2 Jollibee stores, Goldilocks, Mang Inasal and Chow King to name a few. There are also a number of local restos in the area like Biggs, The Park, Graceland and don’t miss Geewan- an upscale turo- turo that offers authentic Bicolano foods.

Convenience stores lie 7 Eleven and Lucky 9 are also located nearby but with Robinson’s Supermarket just across the hotel, I don’t think these stores would not be necessary anymore.

My family has stayed in the hotel for several days after the typhoon Reming when the city (about five years ago) did not have electricity for few days; the hotel was virtually new then.

The best rooms are in the second floor with queen to king size beds and really spacious. Do not get rooms facing the mall at you can hear the bustle and hustle of the city streets.

Book a room at the rear section of the hotel for more peace and quiet.

The rooms on the third floor are smaller and some do not have windows and you may get claustrophobic.:)

As for the room condition after five years- that I do not know but I trust the may have fairly good maintenance as it was included on the recent AdCongress official hotels.

As for the bars bobbymay is right- most of them are located in Magsaysay Strip just a PUJ ride away.

Welcome and enjoy Naga City.

Nagaland hotel proximity to almost all types of entertainment and transactions will surely make your stay here in Naga a hassle-free. About the hotel, better booked a room located at the back of the hotel as those rooms near the road might somehow bring noise irritants as most vehicles pass by that road. Just infront of the hotel is Nagaland E-Mall with Robinsons supermarket as its anchor store. 2 bars are located at the lobby of the hotel and don't miss to try Naga's own kinalas located just beside the hotel.

Roxas Avenue daw doc according to an employee of Mcdo Bichara. It will be a drive-thru, plan to operate Mcdo Roxas branch is after the completion of Mcdo Magsaysay. Mass hiring for Mcdo Naga is slated this end of January. Mcdo Bichara renovation this Feb and it will have the same features "made for you" store like that of Mcdo Plaza Quince Martires.

Beginning to wonder if the vacant area of the new commercial building along Roxas Avenue is for Mcdo drive-thru branch. The design of the building suits well for a drive-thru resto.

In my opinion, I dont think that McDonald's would be using that building as a drive thru unless they occupy the whole building. Half of that I understand would be leased by Metrobank. The bank already have a tarp sign announcing their branch opening soon.

The vacant corner lot beside that builidng is more feasible.

^^

The vacant lot at the right side near the road is much feasible for a drive-thru. Occupants of the building according to the electrical engineer would be aside from Metrobank is DAR provincial office (part of the 2nd floor and the entire 3rd floor), 2 more stalls are vacant for lease. Yesterday, a Manila-based and Chinese owned company made an ocular inspection of the site (they did not disclosed yet the name of the company).
