Every morning, City sweepers clean the stalls at the Plaza and even the statue of Rizal.

Just an observation, the stretch of Panganiban during rush hours, smoke belchers is worst. Hope the City can do something about it.

Hope so, the City is now into greening projects, to name a few;
1. Solar powered street lights
2. E-Jeeps
3. E-trikes
4. E-scooters

^^Slowly but surely.. We really need to get rid of them and replace it entirely with e-vehicles...

since we have huge number of daily transactions here in Naga. Business, Schools, Medicine and others. the number of transportation here private and public also grew. converting our mode of transpo to e-jeep and e-trikes is a good idea. this will lessen air pollution in the city and it will make a Naga a more Eco-friendly City! :)

In CamSur town, relocation tough but safety prime concern
By Juan Escandor Jr.
Inquirer Southern Luzon

Camarines Sur Gov. Luis Raymund “LRay” Villafuerte has ordered the permanent relocation of 145 families living in high-risk areas along the shores of Lake Bato in Bato, Camarines Sur.

Villafuerte said the people have been living in tents for more than six months now after they were forcibly evacuated in July last year at the height of Tropical Storm “Juaning” to prevent a disaster that could have resulted in the loss of hundreds of lives in Bato.

This is good news.

Last year Survivor USA was shot in an island at Nicaragua. What is good with Survivor is that it is not a one shot coverage done on a few hours but cover months of media exposure beamed worldwide thus, exposing more of the potentials of the selected sites of the filming.

The huge turnout of worlwide audience watching Survivor will surely shoot up tourism in Caramoan

‘Survivor USA’ to shoot in Caramoan this March

PILI, Camarines Sur – CamSur, the Caramoan Peninsula in particular, is now definitely a world caliber tourism destination.

This rosy reputation was fortified with the recent choice of the producers of the Survivor USA to shoot their next episode at selected islands off the coast of Gota Village Resort in Caramoan this coming March.

The Survivor USA shoot will be the thirteenth season series of the globally broadcast reality show after Caramoan’s exotic settings repeatedly caught the eye and fancy of Survivor franchisees from several countries ever since Gota Village Resort opened in 2008.

First to film its Survivor season series at Caramoan was Survivor France, dubbed Koh Lanta: Caramoan, started May 7, 2008 and set mainly at a jewel of an island Matukad just several stones throw away offshore of Gota Village Resort where the entire cast and crew stayed, leasing the entire resort for the duration of the shoot.

full article on www. bicolmail.com

This was in the news this morning about two episodes of Survivor USA being shot in Caramoan.

This is good news.

While other countries and provinces spend millions to invite celebrities and publicists to promote their place- CamSur is being paid and shown for free on primetime TV all over the world.

Take a look of this impressive Survivor List that made Caramoan their venue:

Survivor France, May 2008
Survivor Israel (shot three times for 3 different seasons in April 2009; March and May 2010)
Survivor Bulgaria April 2009
Survivor Serbia (shot two times for 2 different seasons in September 2009 and September 2010)
Survivor Sweden July 2010
Survivor Denmark May 2011
Survivor Norway July 2011
Survivor Belgium Aug 2011
Survivor India October 2011

Survivor USA would be the best primetime tourism promotion that the province and the country would ever have.

No other place in the Philippines and probably in the world could boast such impressive list. Who needs Leonardo diCaprio to promote our white sand beaches?

With the kind of promotion that this top rating show is generating in Europe, Asia and the US, is it still a wonder why CamSur is topping other provinces as a preferred tourist destination?

Despite allegations by some people in other threads of padded (again) tourism statistics, facts and figures despite being official declaration from tourism officials could still be twisted and misinterpreted by jealous minds.

Indeed- this proves to show that Survivor Series is more fun in Caramoan.

That building is weird.

It is a huge, long building, beautifully made but maximized every space and left nothing for parking and greenery.

A gasoline station was built at the the only small space left in front of the building.:ohno:

I don't know why the City Engineering Office approves this kind of all concrete structures.

Imagine the danger it poses to the tenants of that building.

This kind of activity
should really be encouraged
as it brings our children close to nature.

When my daughter was still in a traditional school,
I remember them having educational tours to Albay
going to five or six destinations including a mall.

I was wondering
on how they could immerse themselves
in learning the places they visited
when they just have to breeze in
to hurry up for the next destination.

And of all the places-
why include a mall in an educational tour?

One thing good in my daughter’s new school
at the Village Montessori
they are given activities
which are real immersion activities
where they could appreciate
what they do and where they go.

They had immersion visits in Mt. Isarog
to appreciate nature…

All of the 5 projects are 100% sure except for the Gateway Mall thing. I've asked them several times if they're sure that its indeed Gateway and the answer is yes but still I'm having reservations despite our sources directly works at the highest office of the City.

^^If that is confirmed by an official coming from the highest office of the city then that is believable... Let's just wait.... Maybe Naga is just so very lucky for Gateway to expand here first more than any other cities in the country. :okay:

Any reported area for the said rumored mall, pres?

Hello sir! Yes he is also engaged to these networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. But he seldom post updates on forums or blog sites. But he knows and he reads info on these sites because it is the fastest way to get updates wherever he maybe.

Regarding with the invitation, im sorry po mga sir bka hindi ako makadalo sa anniv natin. Its because super busy na po kami now kasi madami na po naka line up na activities and events. Busy din po kasi kami sa pag comply sa mga requirements ng mga investors kaya yun, hindi po aq makakadalo. Maybe next time po.. :)

That building is weird.

It is a huge, long building, beautifully made but maximized every space and left nothing for parking and greenery.

A gasoline station was built at the the only small space left in front of the building.:ohno:

I don't know why the City Engineering Office approves this kind of all concrete structures.

****
Yes, it is indeed strange because by law, depending on the size of the establishment, a certain percentage goes to parking space. Architectural plans supposedly reflect this. There is even a 'final' inspection to make sure the plans were followed.:ohno:

Indeed- this proves to show that Survivor Series is more fun in Caramoan.

after everything has been said and done the benefit of publicity and attention is enjoyed by the whole region :)

Breathtaking views!
No wonder they've chosen Caramoan as the site of Survivor USA!!

certainly a looker!

met two singapore-based filipinos today who both have been to caramoan and stayed in Gota and have rave reviews of the place.

This ceiling designed by Biboy Belleza is beautiful and very unique .

You guys should see this when the lights are on.

first time to see the photo of the design and indeed it is quite impressive!

matibayon talaga si biboy!

Unabated coal-making ravages forest in Camarines Sur
By Juan Escandor Jr.

NAGA CITY—The shrill sound of the chain saw that filled the air can be a dirge to the trees, chopped and baked in dugouts on the slopes of a desolate mountain in the village of Pinamihagan in Lagonoy, Camarines Sur, where charcoal-makers fell hundreds of trees to earn meager income.

Cristobal (not his real name) says he makes at least 28 sacks of charcoal from 300 trees with trunks about a half foot in diameter.

He sells charcoal for P80 per sack which traders sell for P180 per sack to end users. In short, Cristobal’s total income of P2,240 is less than the net profit of P2,800 that the trader earns.

I mean Shoppers Mall :)

Looking at the renovation it seems Shoppers Mall has something big installed for us. They dismantled their old signage and cemented the cracks brought by almost decades of neglect.

IMO, the building is no longer best for a mall, its more conducive for a hotel. The only problem is the lack of parking area.

SM City Naga is undergoing re-painting and some modification in the cinema billboard.

Good point Pao, Hopefully they are prudent enough to make a right decision, since there are many competition in retail business. Just like what Mr. O. of Robertson would said.. "They are coming"

^^Shoppers Mall could have an underground parking area if its to be turned into a hotel.

The building is a sight to behold, its massive simple yet sturdy structure is very ideal for a hotel business. Its proximity to almost all types of services is readily available.

Not sure If Shoppers Mall has an elevator :)

Correct all types of business services would do, like Hotel, office, it is a very strategic location.

Not sure though if this report hasn't change regarding Eurotel at PNB. 2 weeks ago, after a meeting with the station manager of GNN (their station located at the back) he mentioned that there has been some monetary issues which delays the operation of Eurotel. I even confirm it to a tenant of PNB and told me that the deal with Eurotel was put on hold. However, visitors from the City Hall confirmed that Eurotel resume its talks with the PNB management. Let's hope for the best!

Yeah, it was supposed to be started late lat year but until now no signs of works going on.... I hope it would be resolved soon!

In relation to chinese new year. Here's one proof of the presence of numerous chinese traders in the city long before the spaniards came.

http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/2605/487/320/IMGP7690.1.jpg

MAYO- A Pure Bikol Word? (http://tanhaga.wordpress.com/2005/10/05/11/)

The Chinese already had commercial contact with us five hundred years before the Spaniards came.

They came as traders to bring silk, porcelain, pottery, bar-iron, beads, cheap jewelry and many other things of domestic use. They brought back in return raw cotton, resin, abaca, hardwoods, sea-products, rattan, nito, beeswax, pearshells, placer gold, pearlshell, etc. The trade continued until such time many of them decided to stay. Bringing along with them is the knowledge in agriculture, pottery-making, jewelry-making, duck-raising, ship-building and various other occupational practices which the Bikol of old happily adopted.

It is, therefore, not surprising the Bikol language borrowed many words from Chinese, becoming very common in use that nobody suspect were of foreign origin.
Of course, we assume the noodles we eat from Chinese restaurants such as lomi, pancit, misua, sotanghon, bihon, loglog are of Chinese cooking and they carry names that are Chinese-sounding.

But Arsenio Manuel, in his book Chinese Elements In The Tagalog Language, unearthed more Chinese words in current usage in Tagalog not limited to cookery. He asserted the words bantay (guard), suki (customer), hikaw (earrings), bakya,(wooden sandals), baybay (sand), binibini (an unmarried woman), buwisit (bad luck) and many common words are of Chinese provenance.

The findings of Arsenio Manuel carry a resonance in Bikol. Many of the Chinese loanwords Manuel found in Tagalog could also be found in Bikol. The question whether Bikol borrowed them from Tagalog or directly from Mandarin, Fookien or other Chinese dialects is a matter to be settled.. Perhaps this issue can be clarified by perusing old Bikol dictionaries printed in the 1600s when Tagalog influence was nil.
Additionally, we also find some Bikol words with suspect Chinese origin which are not in use in Old or modern Tagalog. I say suspect because I glimpse some similarities in base meanings of these words to the mono- or dyssyllabic entries Manuel cited in his work as purely Chinese and which he asserted could not be found in Original Austronesian or Old Indonesian.

This area of study presents a daunting challenge to the scholars who would have the training, the resources and the inclination to dig deeper for as yet there is no serious research on the matter this writer is aware of.

I would not now tread on this particular area, not having the academic training or the resources to competently attempt such, except to bring to the attention of the readers a very common word in Bikol: “mayo”. This word appears to come from Chinese. It would seem to come from two rootwords “mei” and “you”.

But before we go into that let me state many Chinese words are a combination of two monosyllabic words. This was amply illustrated by Manuel in his book. To cite a few, let me draw from his book, thus:

Baybay, (a reduplication of bai (to cover with earth or sand; bury), seashore, coast.
Bantay, (bang (to hope, expect) – tai (platform, pedestal), watchtower, lookout, watch).
Watch, guard, sentinel.
Lolo (A redupl of lo(old, ancient), old man). Grandfather, any old man.
Magkano (liok (how) –kan(indiv. Unit) –ko(unit), how much?) same.
Pisi (mi(cotton) –se (worsted, woolen yarn; thread), yarn, thread; woolenyarn)
String, twine, small cord.

As shown in the examples aforecited, we see a combining of monosyllabic words which, upon combination, result into a new word. This linguistic feature cannot be found in Bikol or perhaps in any Philippine language for that matter.

Why do I assert the Bikol word “mayo” is of Chinese origin?

A Chinese-Bicolano, Ramon Sytanco, mentioned in passing in one article he wrote (or was it a write-up about him?) in a national magazine that “mayo” (Eng. none, there are/is no) is a Bikol word borrowed from Chinese. Unfortunately, I failed to record the article for future reference.

I undertook to verify his contention by doing several things: 1. I consulted Chinese dictionaries 2. I took pains to see if the word can be found in Lisboa’s Vocabulario de la Lengua Bicol 3. I studied the extent of usage of the word in the Bicol region.

What I discovered corroborated his claim.

I initially verified Sytanco’s claim in a popular concise dictionary where indeed I found the word “meiyou” where “mei” means “no, none” and “you” means “have, there is, are”. But I lost this little book.

Today I consulted a more hefty Chinese dictionary printed by the Oxford University Press (Concise English-Chinese, Chinese-English Dictionary, ed. 2000; authored by Martin H. Manser). Right on p. 295 I found the entry “none” translated in Chinese as “meiyou” and indicated by the corresponding Chinese characters.

In a small pocket dictionary by Zhon Qin, (Chinese For You- Learn to Speak Putonghua, a Hong Kong Man Hai Language Publication reprinted by Merriam & Webster, Inc. here in the Philippines, 1980), we find on page 18 the following entry:

mei you have no; there is no

It is exciting to learn Lisboa has an entry on page 240 of his Vocabulario de la Lengua Bicol which states thus:

MAYO. pp. Esta palabra no se habla sola, sino junta estas particular day; Day mayo, no hay penitus. Day mayong tauo, no hay ninguna persona. Day na mayo, ya no hay mas, o no quedo ya mas

Fr. Marcos de Lisboa collected his material for the dictionary between 1602 and 1616 when he was assigned as definitor and minister of Naga, and in that period of time also was variously assigned in Oas and Polangui. It took more than one hundred years (Ist. ed. 1754) before his linguistic work saw print. (vide, Blair and Robertson, vol. 35, p. 313).

The Bicol he was recording, therefore, was that current in the period between 1500 to 1602. It is of great puzzlement why he would insist the word “mayo” could only be used exclusively together with the word “dai”.

Lisboa’s assertion that this word is “no se habla sola” (not spoken alone) is supported by other illustrations he used in other parts of his work. Let me quote thus: p. 132, Day pa mayo aco nagaboy cayan banwaan na iyan; p. 135, Day mayon gagaueon si coyan; p. 143, Day mayong guiocguioc sa banwaan, nasidomtong aco; Day pa mayo naguiliguili si coyan; p. 410, Day pa mayo aco nin pigtuturotugmacan nagbubuhis..

Let me render these in modern orthography: p. 132, Dai pa mayo ako nagaboy kayan banwaan na iyan; p. 135, Day mayong gagaweon si kuyan; p. 143, Dai mayong giokgiok sa banwaan, na si dumatong ako; p. 142, Dai pa mayo nagiligili si kuyan; p. 410, Dai pa mayo ako nin pigtuturutugmakan nagbubuhis.

Today we use the two words interchangeably but not both in a sentence as it is redundant. Is this not an indication the word “mayo” then was just creeping into the language, its use not yet preeminent and its meaning not yet clear and certain? There must be a technical term in linguistics to describe such a speech occurrence.

Another indication the word “mayo” is not really autochthonous to the bikol soil is its limited use to Camarines Sur and Norte, more particularly in Naga and environs and extending as far as Talisay and Mercedes and up to the Partido towns. If it is used elsewhere, it is due to peripheral influence.

I would believe the word “dai” (di’, is a contracted form) is an older and more authentic Bikol word as it has wider usage throughout Bicol while the word “wara’” (var.: “oda’”) is limited in use in certain areas of Camarines, Albay, Sorsogon and Catanduanes, and Masbate. The word “wara’”is of even older native provenance, being found in many variant forms in many Philippine languages from Maranaw to Kapampangan.

Faced with this quantum of data, I can safely assert “mayo” is a borrowing from Chinese whose entry may be dated at 1600 or thereabouts.

(To give one an idea of how Mandarin Chinese uses the words mei, you and mei you in a sentence, I took a picture of a pertinent page (p. 62)from the book Modern Chinese – A Basic course by the Faculty of Peking University. Dover Publications, New York, U.S.A (1971). The picture is highlighted above this article.)

interesting. i am not sure, though, if our Bikol word "MAYO" is really of Chinese origin.

i studied Chinese in school for 8 years-- both Mandarin and Hokkien. it's good to have a second look at the proposed etymology of our Bikol MAYO (pronounced as spelled, the typical Filipino way, not using the long vowel sounds of the macron symbol).

the proposed Chinese origin "mayo" is pronounced "may"- (as in the month after April) "yo" (the "o" sound as in "shOW"), both long vowel sounds, using the diacritical mark macron. it is Mandarin not Hokkien/ Amoy/ Fookien.

let us remember that the Chinese who came to the Philippines way before the Spaniards came and even through the colonial period are from Southern China: which means they speak Amoy/ Hokkien/ Fookien (from Fujian province)- and NOT Mandarin.

this is obvious in local words with Chinese origin that are traced to Hokkien:

Kuya (elder brother) -- a hiya (Hokkien) -- ko ko (Mandarin)
Ate (elder sister) - a chi (Hokkien) - chie chie (Mandarin)
Siopao (steamed meat bun) - sio paw (Hok) -- pao tsu (Mand)
Bihon (rice noodles) - bi hun (Hok) - mi fen (Mand)

(NB, spelling i use is not pinyin/ romanized; just a convenient way of spelling it as pronounced- for easy illustration)

that's why Chinoys really speak Hokkien at home NOT mandarin. Mandarin is learned in school. our local Chinese will not use the Mandarin "mayo" (or ma-you) in conversation. :)

the sample illustration (Chinese words quoted) in the article features Mandarin, not Hokkien.

cha an! (Hok) Chaw an! (mand)

interesting i didn't even notice it was in mandarin. The original article was long posted in a bikol lit forum, i'll try to look for it. Whether the word is bikol or not, it still is strange to be only used within city, especially that it's not found on other ethnic languages.

Another odd word in Naga is harong. Commonly termed as balay or bahay in other languages, our term harong may probably have links with the lean-to structures ("hawong") of the agtas in Zambales; or the soul boathouses for the dead in borneo called "larong". Both structures are patterned from a boat, a common thing in the austronesian tradition.
