AdNU German Film Month

The Literature and Language Department, the Alumni and International Relations, and the Goethe-Insitut Manila have come together to promote the German culture with three films: Lila Lila (My Lies, My Life, My Love), Nirgendwo in Afrika (Nowhere in Africa), Das Leben der Anderen (The Lives of Others).

The films will be shown in the month of July 2012, with the following screenings: July 6, Friday for Lila Lila; July 7, Saturday for Nirgendwo in Afrika, with free popcorn at the end of the movie; and July 14 for Das Leben der Anderen. All films will be shown at the Instructional Media Center (IMC) at the Phelan Hall, from 3pm to 6pm. Admission is free.

NAGA City -- The rainy season already in, officials of Bgy. Del Rosario renewed their appeal to Presidents Noynoy Aquino to fund the construction of river control in Zone 2, Sitio Capilihan, near a district jail facility with over 200 inmates and an urban relocation site with more than 50 houses.

The Del Rosario Barangay Council passed two resolutions -- Nos. 012-030 and 012-031 -- appealing to President Benigno Simeon C. Aquino to help provide funds for the project.

It is because it is in one of the best locations in Naga, near a major private hospital, just beside Iglesia ni Cristo Church, in front of Mariner's School Panganiban and just a walk away from the terminal.

Jollibee SM is always crowded that even the overflow in SM City could be accommodated by the store.

Jollibee has five stores in Naga City alone and all are thriving and doing well.

Anyway, I never heard of any Jollibee Store going bankrupt in the Philippines.

Labo, Camaligan named Bicol's Best Child Friendly Towns

LEGAZPI CITY, Albay, June 11 (PIA) -- The towns of Labo in Camarines Norte and Camaligan in Camarines Sur were declared regional winners for the Best Child Friendly Municipality 2011.

In the awarding ceremony held at Naga City Science Centrum on June 5, Labo mayor Dindo Pardo and Camaligan mayor Emmanuel Prado each received a cash prize of P50,000 and certificate of recognition.

The awards were conferred by Elino Bordelon of the Regional Council for the Welfare of Children (RCWC) and Nilsa Matamorosa of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in Bicol.

Camaligan is the 2011 regional winner for the Best Child Friendly Municipality in the fifth class municipality category while Labo bagged the same award for the first class municipality category.

After 30 years, American couple continues to bring more smiles to Filipino kids

NAGA CITY, CAMARINES SUR– In 1982, Dr. William Magee Jr. and his wife Kathleen came to the country with a group of medical volunteers to operate on children with cleft lips and palates.

About 300 families arrived but the team could only accommodate 40 children.

“We discovered hundreds of children ravaged by deformities and although we helped many children, we were forced to turn away majority of those who sought help,” Dr. Magee shared.

The Magees then made a promise to come back to the Philippines. And what began as an idea has grown into an international group of people transforming lives of many children through Operation Smiles International (OSI).

Three decades later, Operation Smiles is coming home to its roots to embark on a series of medical missions in various parts of the country.

The “Journey Home” marks the organization’s 30th anniversary with 10 missions in nine different sites across the country for three weeks.

This will be participated by a thousand of volunteers from 30 countries to help with the repair cleft lip, cleft palate and other facial deformities.

The free surgery will be conducted in Sta. Ana in Manila; San Fernando in Pampanga; Dasmarinas in Cavite; Naga City; Silay in Negros Occidental; Cebu City; Koronadal in South Cotabato; and in General Santos City.

PHL ECO-SCHOOL CHAMPS GEAR UP FOR ASEAN AWARDS

Students and faculties of Iliranan Elementary School in Negros Occidental and of Camarines Sur National High School in Naga City have something to look forward to in the coming days -- and that is to represent the country in the 2012 ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) Eco-Schools Awards to be held on July 17-18, 2012 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

This was announced today by Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Ramon J. P. Paje, following a report by Malaysia in the 4th Meeting of ASEAN Working Group on

Environmental Education (AWGEE) held May 29-30, 2012 in Vientiane, Lao People’s Democratic Republic.

The 2012 ASEAN Eco-Schools Awards is organized by the Government of Malaysia in partnership with Hanns-Seidel Foundation, the US Agency for International Development (USAID), Japan-ASEAN Integrated Fund (JAIF) and the ASEAN Secretariat.

“This early I would like to congratulate the students and faculty members of these two schools for championing environmental protection in their campuses. Teaching the kids to do simple things like tree planting and the 3Rs of solid waste management will go a long way in shaping up an environment-conscious nation,” Paje said.

The Camarines Sur National High School (CSNHS), a public secondary school in Naga City, won the championship for its “Youth for Environment in Schools Organization (YES-O)”.

The student organization serves to facilitate environmental projects by mobilizing the school in tree planting like the CSNHS Forest Park Project), symposia on environment and health concerns, street and coastal clean-up, and environmental campaigns through signage, bulletin announcements, green film showing, essays and poster-making contests, solid waste recovery through Project SAVE (Service Awareness in Valuing Environment), and participation in international Earth-saving events like Green Wave, Earth Hour, etc.

CamSur edges out Metro Manila as top tourist stop

MANILA, Philippines — Camarines Sur, now more popularly referred to as “CamSur” particularly by the youth, has edged out Metro Manila as the top tourist stop in the Philippines.

This, according to the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) report using data from the Department of Tourism’s (DOT) regional offices.

In 2010, CamSur overtook Metro Manila and Cebu as the top tourist destination in the country with a total of 2.33 million visitors, the NSCB said. Metro Manila was second place with almost 2.3 million visitors and Cebu was third with 1.77 million visitors.

In 2009, CamSur was the third top destination with 1.56 million visitors. Metro Manila was first with 1.9 million visitors and Cebu was second with 1.6 million visitors.

In 2008, Camsur only had 721,024 visitors while Metro Manila had 1.35 million visitors and was the number two destination nationwide. Cebu was number one for that year with almost 1.6 million visitors. Baguio City was number three with 814,975 visitors.

Bicol watersports attract 2.33 million visitors; Cebu’s beaches, resorts bring in 1.7 million

Camarines Sur, the new watersports adventure capital of the country, has edged out Metro Manila and Cebu as the top tourist stops in the Philippines.

This is based on the report of the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) report using data from the Department of Tourism's (DOT) regional offices.

In 2010, CamSur overtook Metro Manila and Cebu as the top tourist destination in the country with 2.33 million visitors, the NSCB said.

Metro Manila was second place with almost 2.3 million visitors and Cebu was third with 1.77 million visitors.

Cebu, which has an international airport like Manila, used to be the number 1 destination in 2008 with 1.6 million visitors.

Camsur was then a distant placer with only 721,024 visitors after Metro Manila's 1.35 million and Baguio City's 814,975 visitors.

In 2009, CamSur dramatically improved its rank to the third top destination with 1.56 million visitors. Metro Manila was first with 1.9 million visitors and Cebu was second with 1.6 million visitors.

Camsur made the leap by opening the Camsur Watersports Complex, the largest wakeboarding facility in Asia.

The unique park is designed for waterskiing, waterskiing and and wakeskating and has a 6-point cable ski system. It recently hosted the Ironman 70.3, the first time the Philippines hosted this international triathlon event.

Three, maybe five (I honestly don't remember how many we were that time) of us were huddled inside a small nipa hut, waiting for an event that we barely know anything about to happen. We were told to keep our voices down and were specifically advised to turn off our cellphone, or at least activate its silent mode so as not to create any noise. And no camera. It didn't make sense to us but they said it's of paramount importance that the place must look like it's completely inhabited. All lights from the bar and the nipa huts surrounding it were extinguished -against our will - including the solar lights scattered around the lawn, even those hidden under the bushes.

The biggest treat happened when the host, Jeff Probst, himself passed by in front of us, just about a meter away from where we stood. I was totally awestruck to have seen him in person. I've great admiration for this guy because he's such a kick-ass game master. You can imagine how dumbfounded I was standing there, waving at him like an excited kindergarten. He looked at us with a slightly baffled expression probably thinking who the hell we were and how we're able to get inside the camp. But he smiled, good old Jeff Probst was smiling. In my mind, I heard him saying 'The tribe has spoken, it's time for you to go."

San Jose Town Plaza, a new project of Mayor ABC
San Jose, Camarines Sur – A new beautiful public plaza, where young and old people alike may enjoy, relax and play, or just to pass the time away, came out vibrant and alive after its construction on the front of the municipal building.

The new municipal plaza is equipped with a stage, lampposts and light and other lighting facilities, benches, shade trees and others.

In the evenings, the multi-colored lights add to the beauty of the area amid the happy voices of children and adults playing, or just sitting nearby.

Mayor Chavez proposes to name the town plaza as “Don Mariano Agustin Plaza” in honor of the first “Capitan Municipal”, and co-founder of the town of San Jose who, history revealed, was founded by Fr. Salvador Mendoza, together with the former in the year 1813!

The new addition to Mayor Chavez accomplishments was officially opened last May 18, 2012 on the eve of San Jose Town Fiesta.

This would be an added attraction aside from the prestine beaches of Caramoan. Bohol river cruise cost 350 for a day cruise and 500 night cruise with an eat-all-you-can buffet lunch before departing.

perhaps Caramoan can start its own version soon? :)

The Literature and Language Department, the Alumni and International Relations, and the Goethe-Insitut Manila have come together to promote the German culture with three films: Lila Lila (My Lies, My Life, My Love), Nirgendwo in Afrika (Nowhere in Africa), Das Leben der Anderen (The Lives of Others).

The films will be shown in the month of July 2012, with the following screenings: July 6, Friday for Lila Lila; July 7, Saturday for Nirgendwo in Afrika, with free popcorn at the end of the movie; and July 14 for Das Leben der Anderen. All films will be shown at the Instructional Media Center (IMC) at the Phelan Hall, from 3pm to 6pm. Admission is free.
