Below are posts from Cebu City and Province Thread (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=914700)

mas daghan na man gyud siguro ganahan mo-try og camsur coz daghan man gud kaayo kalingawan sa Lago El Rey. these are something new not only to filipinos but to our foreign friends as well.

how i wish the governor is right, but making DOT look like a liar seems so
unbecoming of her position ... for sure one of them is lying, or trying to
deceive, ... you can conclude who ...

But honestly, dapat e clarify sa DOT..... We are the number 1 tourist destination according to the DOT data for the first quarter of the year 2009.. So how come na number 2 ta on the list presently? Is there any clarification from the DOT?

And besides even with the wakeboarding in Camsur.. i dont believe, it will generate more tourists than in Cebu...

bai, lets not take this away from cam sur... other people (non cebuanos) might interpret this as us being bitter na we're not number 1... i'm sure DOT double checked the data before they published it..

bec of the crisis, maybe some people from luzon opted not to go to the visayas kay mas gastos na... i compare nimo ang mas gasto for a plane trip to cebu, bohol vs a bus ride to naga from manila... maybe because of the exposure it gets from sports shows and word of mouth that people wanted to try it, kay medyo something new pa man ni nga attraction...

^^ my take on this, number 1 ang camsur sa total tourists ( foreign and domestic) mas dako baya ang market sa luzon in terms of domestic tourism. unlike sa cebu nga tuyuon gyud kay island province man. ang domestic tourists ang naka number 1 sa camsur, pero sa foreign tourists, as what has been stated sa news article, cebu still tops all other destinations.

Bai, the data you mentioned was for the first quarter (jan to march) ug ang latest karon is ang 1st semester (Jan to June) so I think dili inconsistent ang report.

I suppose when the summer season struck, daghan kaayong taw mostly from luzon, who went to Cam Sur. That bolstered the tourist arrivals catapulting CAm Sur to no.1 in total arrivals. However, for foreign arrivals, No. 1 pa gyapon ang Cebu.

But really, this is good. I am truly happy for Cam Sur and would really want to go there nig uli nako.

This is also good for Cebu. We need a healthy dose of competition diba? Knowing Cebuanos and our pride, dili gyud magpalupig. Hehehe. So mas mu push ni nato so diversify our tourism. Cam Sur is a new thing. A kot of people have already visited Cebu.
Now, what remains is to keep them coming back for more, for something new.

Some Cebu forumers are still doubtful regarding Camarines Sur's status as no. 1 in tourist arrivals....:)

But some just accepted it....

Those who still can't believe and continue to disparage what Cam Sur has achieved, have time to visit the province and see for yourselves that you may be convinced.

We do not need to convince anyone. Camarines Sur did not say it's No. 1. DOT did.

It is not meant to be a competition though. Rather to give others a model just in case they are looking for best ideas to improve.

PNR UPDATES:

My personal opinion, the corrosion of the coaches reflex not only it's too old. but beyond this, is the mismanagement of the system which benefited only few people. Which the organization can no longer serve and maintain the wonderful carriage. I hope this would be another chance that will enlighten us all.

jardet, I hope the incessant debates on CamSur and Cebu being who's on top and who's not should put to an end now.

No worries about this, mga bai...Most of us here in Cebu are happy with what Cam Sur has achieved. There are even some of us who expressed the desire to go to CamSur. Only few are still in dilemma, but it does not mean they are not willing to accept the fact.... :)

You'd beaten the odds and now Cam Sur is reaping all the hardworks and efforts that your people had exerted. Congrats to Cam Sur...

Salamat, bay...The 80 provinces in the Philippines should worked altogether to achieve our goal not only as Asia's best tourism destination but the most visited as well.

By the way, Welcome to this thread .

Cebu province and Cam Sur are already having some partnership plans. Here is an old article, dated few months ago.

Camarines Sur governor courts airlines for Cebu-Naga direct route

By Ehda M. Dagooc (The Freeman) Updated April 07, 2009 12:00 AM

CEBU, Philippines – Camarines Sur provincial governor Luis Raymund Villafuerte, Jr. is currently courting airlines to consider a direct flight from Naga City to Cebu City to promote synergy in tourism as both destinations offer complementing activities that maximize travelers’ experience.

Villafuerte recognized the importance of connecting to Cebu a direct flight to strengthen both province’s tourism advantages.

CamSur, which is known for its government-owned sports and adventure tourism facilities aims to make Cebu as an important partner in drawing not only the local tourists from the Southern Philippines, but also to give Cebu tourism stakeholders a wider option of tour itineraries for foreign visitors.

Salamat for those kind words.

It is a rare display of humilty and sportmanship considering Cebu's status as the second most important city in the Philippines, next to Manila.

Those are what real winners are made of. Secured and confident.

Aside from tourism- panalo pa rin ang Cebu on all aspects even with the best cities in Manila.

Balato n'yo na lang 'yon sa CamSur. Ganyan naman kaming maliliit. Mababaw ang kaligayahan.

Way to go Sleepwalker.:applause:

PNR NAGA - CENTRAL STATION

THIS IS A HISTORICAL, REVIVING THE OLD CARRIAGE WILL MEAN SO GREAT TO ALL PEOPLE AS AN ALTERNATIVE TRANSPORTATION.

REHABILITATION PERIOD

Hi Sir Bobbymay, I am a resident forumer of PHILIPPINE RAILWAYS THREAD. Just want to ask if you wrote down the body numbers of those PNR coaches being refurbished there? We need help from fellow SSC forumers to identify all body numbers of PNR rolling stocks either Locomotive, Passenger Coach, Flat bed trailer, Cargo Wagon, ballast train etc. I believe that being refurbished unit is a 7A-2000 series passenger coach, a non-A/C unit.

Here in Biñan Laguna we regularly use 7A-2006, 7A-2015, 7A-2014 and 7A-2025 (not sure with the last coach) being hauled by Locomotive PNR Blue Whale 919 (alternate is Blue Whale 902 and 915)

I think its only a non-airconditioned coach since all de luxe railcars will be refurbished by STA.ROSA PHILIPPINES.

Escudero: Little-known tourist sites need to be developed, promoted like Boracay, Palawan (http://businessmirror.com.ph/home/regions/14193-escudero-little-known-tourist-sites-need-to-be-developed-promoted-like-boracay-palawan.html)

Written by Claudeth Mocon / Correspondent
Wednesday, 05 August 2009 19:49 st1\:*{behavior:url(#ieooui) } CEBU CITY—Sen. Francis Escudero said every possible destination in the country should be promoted and developed with the same passion and effort as those being done with Boracay, Bohol, Cebu and Palawan.

“Providence has provided the Philippines with incomparable tourist attractions like its more than 7,000 islands, but only a fraction of them have been explored,” he said during a recent visit to Tagbilaran, Bohol.

“Whoever becomes the next president should try to maximize our country’s advantage in tourism to create more jobs and increase income for the industry,” he added.

In the same light, Robert Lim Joseph, chair emeritus of the National Association of Independent Travel Agencies (Naitas), said Philippine tourism promises to be the strong foundation that will prop up the national economy. He cited official data showing that tourist arrivals in the top 16 tourist destinations went up by 16.5 percent, reaching close to 4 million tourists in the first half of the year.
Joseph said foreign arrivals rose by 6 percent during the first six months of the year despite a decrease of 6 percent in inbound visitors into east Asia and Pacific during that period.

Joseph, for his part, said visitor count shows a welcome shift in tourist influx because Camarines Sur has emerged as the top destination. The province attracted a total of 902,202 visitors, with foreign and domestic arrivals up by 52 percent and 60 percent, respectively.

Joseph said Cebu is only second as a tourist destination with 830,599 visitors, or 23 percent of total arrivals.

The other welcome news is that other places also offer bright spots, like Palawan and Bohol, whose visitor count went up by 63 percent and 16 percent, respectively, he said.

This was echoed by Escudero, who cited the efforts of Gov. LRay Villafuerte to develop the Caramoan islands off Camarines Sur as a premier tourism site.

“The government can help local government units by building the necessary infrastructure that will allow easy access to places like Caramoan or Donsol, in Sorsogon, or other places in the country,” Escudero said.

“When other Philippine industries are suffering from losses, tourism can compensate by helping provide jobs and livelihood not only in the cities, but also in rural areas through community-based tourism,” Joseph added.
Joseph called on all Philippine industry players to join hands to promote and protect tourism so it can make significant contributions to the national economy during this financial crisis.

LGUs constrained by lack of coordination and funds to implement projects–WB (http://businessmirror.com.ph/home/economy/14161-lgus-constrained-by-lack-of-coordination-and-funds-to-implement-projectswb.html)

Written by Cai Ordinario / Reporter

Local government units (LGUs) are constrained by the lack of coordination and financial resources to implement development programs and projects, according to the World Bank’s portfolio review.

In a statement, the World Bank said it has 27 active projects in the Philippines as of 2008, 10 of which support LGUs and communities either through financing, capacity building and technical assistance. These projects represent $458 million, or a third of its total commitments.

“Many LGUs have been able to provide much-needed infrastructure like good roads, better classrooms and electricity, as well as livelihood to their constituents despite limited resources.

“However, the lack of coordination at different levels tends to fragment development planning among neighboring LGUs and in most cases result in each LGU pursuing strategies that needlessly compete with its neighbors,” the World Bank said in a statement.

“The portfolio review also showed that many LGUs are constrained by limited financial resources to pursue development programs and projects,” the Washington-based multilateral financing institution added.

In order to address this problem, the World Bank recommended that there is a need to create clusters of LGUs to make them more capable of accessing financing for big projects such as wastewater treatment facilities and sanitary landfills.

The bank said an example would be if 13 LGUs formed the Metro Naga Development Council to share resources and promote Naga City as an investment hub which they could promote and allow them to access more financing programs.

These financing programs, the bank said, include that of the Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) for building common landfills. Also, the Department of Health (DOH) has formed health zones where groups of LGUs share a common catchment area and administration costs.

World Bank acting country director Maryse Gautier said the World Bank is now in the process of developing a project that will provide assistance to LGU-integrated approaches, including clustering arrangements.

Among the recommendations discussed also include ways to improve access by LGUs to capacity building, good governance and institutional-strengthening programs.

“A provincial development strategy could help address key issues in governance, capacity and coordination and provide an integrated and comprehensive approach to local governance,” Gautier said.

Specifically, such a strategy could ensure effective coordination among towns and cities, avoid duplication of programs and projects, and speed up delivery of much-needed and timely services to the poor.

Thanks for your time to drop by. Sorry i was too busy this day. I promise Hakz that i will be online around 7pm. Anyway. I was really surprise, the train interior is very nice, hopefully the one in Bicol will also look like that. I will get the details once i visited the PNR station either tomorrow or next week.

Hi, Thanks for the photos. I think that those coaches being refurbished there at Naga are for the ordinary service because of the seats. The air-conditioned coaches are equipped with 2x2 reclining chairs, just like what aircon bus have. If you have time, please ask PNR where are those white coaches with 2x2 rec.chairs. Also, kindly ask the manager there of their body numbers like for example that locomotive engine, we believe that it is Blue Whale 918. BTW, we call those PNR locomotives as Blue Whales.

This is just to inform my fellow Naga and CamSur forumers...

Below are posts from Cebu City and Province Thread ([URL]http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=914700)...

So how come.. Cebu which had been NO. 1 sa Foreign Tourist.. came in Second Over-All.. How do the DOT do the Mathematics in counting Domestic Tourists? I am just asking...

yeah i know.... but i am just puzzled.. on how do they count the domestic tourist.. apil ang mga passengers sa bus who passed by CAmsur? In Cebu, i think the basis is hotel occupancy, travel agencies etc.. wala na gani apil sa kwenta ang mga domestic tourists who are has a place to stay in cebu like relatives and friends.

so does it mean CAmsur right now.. have the complete facilities to accommodate the 200% growth from Jan.- June 2009? How many resorts does Camsur have right now..

Am sorry, i am not questioning ha.. i am just validating the figures..

i just read.. this.. i also share it.. if cebu.had 830k tourist from jan-june and Camsur had more than 900k...Camsur must have been teeming with people nowaday... wow ha.. 900k people from jan-june going to Camsur just to have a wakeboarding...... wow!

^^huh... Don't under estimate unless kung naka adto na gyud ka sa CamSur... Mas accessible baya ang CamSur from the Capital kaysa sa Cebu... Og mas barato kaysa mo adto kag Cebu...

Precisely that is my point.. if they count the number of passengers in the bus that even passed by Camsur as domestic tourist.. then that exactly explains the figures..

because if you would analyze, from all angles.. its is mathematically improbable.

Cebu was No. 1 tourist destination from Jan. March 2009.. Then suddenly, No. 1 na ang Camsur (who was far from the top 5 on the same DOT figures) from Jan-June 2009 figures.... with a 194% increase....

I am suspecting a dagdag bawas or even bloating of figures scheme on the figures.. why would i ask them....

Ok. i have no further arguments.. let the people be the judge na lang... It is simply unbelievable...I am sorry.

guys,

can we just end this pathetic issue of questioning the credibility of that DOT figure. we have to remember that the DOT Secretary is a Cebuano. Do you think he will allow his department to issue such statistics without any basis or with rigged figures? If you didn't have time to check on other places other than our own Cebu, I think it's high time for you to do your homework, and learn from what other places are doing and what they're experiencing. Im based in Manila, and based on my observation, a lot of people here have recently visited or are contemplating of going to CamSur because of the unique experience. Wakeboarding, other water sports, even butanding watching. Add to that the Boracay of Bicol which was the location of Survivor France. Through WORD OF MOUTH, domestic tourists are flocking to CamSur, and that's REALITY! Tourism stakeholders in Cebu should think something UNIQUE so our domestic tourists will have more reasons to visit our place again.

So please, please lang, undangi na kuno ninyo ang pag contest sa latest data sa DOT. We're about to sound really pathetic...

^^Sakto gyud ka bai Dave... DOT Sec. is our very own Ace Durano...with this truth pa lang, I know that the figure is true... but aren't you happy for CamSur and the Bicol Region being the no.1 tourist destination? You know, Bicol is one of the poorest regions in the Philippines and being the no. 1 tourist destination will pull this region up... Isn't it nice to hear they are growing? I prefer them to be number One for them to show what they have to the world... Anyway naila na bitaw ang Cebu and it doesn't mean wanay tourist manganhi sa Cebu just because we are number two... For sure mas daghan pang turista ang manganhi sa Cebu labi na ig Pasko coz Cebu is CEBU!:okay:

I am sorry bai.. i am just being frank of what i feel.. I am disclosing it here in this forum rather than in other venues....

Dili ko ganahan.. na nindot kaayo akong sulti dire sa forum.. kuntodo praising, unya.. sa gawas sa forum lain sad akong sulti..

sige nga.. mag survey ta dire sa Makati.. I am also now in makati.. gusto ka.. mag initiate ta ug survey here in makati..

i have my office mates here in makati.. taga manila jud ni sila na pure.. they cant even locate where is Camsur.. neither identify which is the capital of Camsur.. Daet or Naga.. ( am just joking mga bai).

Anyway, to clear things up... i am not underestimating Camsu ha.. i am happy na the country has another tourist site to be proud of.. its just that.. grabe ra sad ba ka questionable na morag overnight.. na surpass nila ang Cebu.. which is simply unbelievable to me..

I havent been to Camsur, i admit, i am supposed to go there last Saturday and Sunday.. but postponed it due to the typhoon.

Then go to CamSur first before you start blabbering about "inaccurate" figures.

Hay, naa gyu'y mga tawo nga ang tan-aw sa Cebu kay perfect, walay makalupig, the best, pinakanindot. Wake up, there are a lot of places that are better than Cebu.

Ug naa man gani'y makamention ug Cebu, second priority nana nila. Look, I'm not trying to bring Cebu down because no one can kay established naman g'yud ang Sugbo but kailangan lang g'yud ipamulat sa uban nga dili kadawat sa tinood nga daghan pa ug areas nga dapat iimprove ang Cebu. Mao ra.

Ok.. kay nag cite ka that i am bring "inaccurate" figures here.. Do u have any proof.. of your sa imong statement na when you ask sa taga Manila ang una mogawa sa ilang baba kay Davao, Cagayan de Oro etc etc...

i will return to you the challenge....

and for all you know.. i am not bringing here. "inaccurate figures" as you said.. try to check my posts.. if i did..

i am not being pathetic.. i am just trying to be logical.. if you want to argue me.. fine.. we can have a venue to argue.. just bring your facts and figures and i will bring mine.. anytime.

hello guys i'm new in this thread and I read the disputes about camsur and cebu on who's number 1 in terms of tourism, well in my opinion I think cebu is number one in terms of its facilities and economy, you have various activities, accommodations, malls, universities etc... whereas camsur it only has one facility which is the wake boarding resort... what if wake boarding is just a trend then it will be the end of camsurs tourism...but of course that is only my opinion... no violent reactions...ok

Basta, no matter how many people will rant/bash CamSur because of it's achievement, just dont mind it. Important thing is the reality.

Anyway, I hope to see CamSur and Siargao to soar higher in terms of tourism. CamSur has already shown its potential, while Siargao still lacks promotion...In short, Siargao is still underrated.

May pera naman ang gobyerno natin, sana bigyan naman ng mas malaking budget ang PNR. Hindi naman kelangan brand new na train coaches, as long as its clean and well maintained oks na yan. Ito ang isa sa major na solusyon sa transport woes ng Pinas. But its nice to see that there are efforts to rehabilitate this mode of transport in our country. Starting off in CamSur, i hope this will also hold true for the rest of the provinces or cities with PNR fleet.:)

CamSur new most visited
tourism destination in RP

Camarines Sur posted 902, 202 tourist arrivals in the first six months of 2009 to emerge at the top of the list among the most favored tourism destinations in the Philippines.

This is according to a report of the Department of Tourism (DoT) stating tourist arrivals in the leading 16 tourism destinations in the country rose by an average of 16.5% reaching up to close to 4 million this first semester despite the global economic crunch, the threat of A(H1N1) and reduction of some 6% in volume of inbound travel to the Pacific area.

Camarines Sur accounted for some one-fourth of the total arrivals in the key destinations with a robust growth in both foreign and domestic visitors by 52% and 260%, respectively, largely credited to Gov. LRay Villafuerte’s judicious and timely investments in tourism development.

At the forefront of Gov. Villafuerte’s tourism initiatives are the Camarines Sur Watersports Complex (CWC) which is now a wakeboarding mecca and a center of various water-based sports, and the Gota Village Resort which was adjudged the best eco-tourism destination in the world.

The success of these initiatives serves as a model for other local government units (LGUs) to harness their tourism potentials and optimize local resources to create more economic activity, the report said.

Even Gov. Villafuerte himself was a bit amazed with the virtual instant success of his tourism projects. “CamSur ranked third most visited destination last year, but we were not expecting to rise to the very top in such a short time”, he said.

The other fabulous traditional destinations in the country that also showed arrivals growth but CamSur eclipsed in the past six months of 2009 are former top ranker Cebu, Puerto Princesa, Bohol, Boracay, and Puerto Galera.

Gov. Villafuerte is optimistic CamSur can easily hold on to its top tourism destination position with promotion of more international activities like the Cobra Ironman 70.3 Philippines scheduled at the CWC this coming August 23 where no less than 500 participants from all over the world are expected to join. Ironman 70.3 to further spur tourism in CamSur

PILI, Camarines Sur – The staging of Cobra Ironman 70.3 Philippines here on August 23 is expected to further boost the burgeoning tourism industry of the province.

No less than 500 top-notch triathletes from around the world will participate in this classic competition which combines swimming, biking and running.

Just like in the WWA Wake Park World Championships held in the province for two consecutive years, the latest of which was last March, the triathletes are not the only ones expected to come. Many of them will be accompanied by their family, friends and even their coaches.

Hence, it is estimated that more than 2,000 tourists, both local and foreign, will begin arriving as early as August 19, according to Gov. LRay Villafuerte.

All hotel accommodations in the province are already fully booked. Most of the cabanas, trailer homes, wood cabins including the Mansion Suites at the provincial capitol complex have already been reserved for the expected arrival of tourists.

This influx of tourists will be benefiting not only the province but also the City of Naga as what happened in the previous years when the province held the international wakeboarding competitions.

As a result of all these tourism initiatives of Gov. LRay, Camarines Sur now ranks number one in tourist arrivals among the 16 key tourism destinations of the country as of the first semester this year based from the latest report of Department of Tourism. The province has overtaken such touted tourist destinations as—Boracay, Cebu, and Davao.

In anticipation of the big inflow of tourists and to ensure the stay of participants and visiting spectators will be pleasant and comfortable, Gov. LRay along with partner-organizers Alaska Milk Corporation and Asia Brewery are making arrangements with the transport sector to ensure efficient inflow of the triathletes and tourists to the province.

“The local air transport companies here have committed to add more flights to its daily runs should the need arise,” the governor said.

Veteran triathletes are expected to arrive as early as August 20 for practice and acclimatization, including Chris McCormack, Ironman Hawaii World Champion; Cameron Brown, 2006 European Ironman Champion and eight times New Zealand champion; Tim Marr, another Ironman Hawaii World Champion; Lisa Bentley, eleven-time Ironman Champion at the Hawaii World Championship; Lucy Smith, two-time silver medallist in the ITU Duathlon World Championships and Bevan Leach, Champion ITU World Cup Asian LD Tri Champs (Bike Record) 2007.

Some of the local personalities who are participating in this milestone event include Budget Secretary Rolando Andaya Jr., Senator Pia Cayetano, Wilfred Uytengsu of Alaska Milk Corp., Ernie Lopez of ABS-CBN and Fernando Zobel. S. Nieves MMEC http://www.bicolmail.com/issue/2009/august06/xspur.html

^^:cheers2:
i hope the lgu anticipated visitors' safety as well. appropriate security measures should be put in place -- perhaps deploy additional police at least along the event's route...:)

Building houses for all seasons
By Jonas Cabiles Soltes

NAGA CITY, Philippines—How do you ride out the storm in the time of global warming? Civil engineer Emeterio Aman may have found an answer.

Aman, 48, a native of Naga City, is no stranger to destructive typhoons, but he realized more than anybody else the importance of constructing shelters that could withstand the forces of nature after Supertyphoon “Reming” tore through Bicol in 2006 and smashed structures in the city.

“Strong typhoons cause damage to at least 25 percent of a housing structure. But conventional house construction method has been favored in Bicol though the region lies on the path of typhoons,” he said.

Typhoons visit the region every five years so Aman and his associates at Aman Engineering Office thought of designing an innovative way to construct houses that resist damage. The result: Arise technology (Aman Engineering Reliable Innovation for Stronger Economical and Environment-friendly Technology).

Technology

The idea is to build monolithic or one-piece houses that can withstand typhoons, earthquakes and other disasters.

“I first had the idea when we began constructing units for our socialized housing program. We used the interconnecting (IC) blocks applied by the Habitat for Humanity in building houses,” Aman said.

IC blocks, which are put together like Lego pieces, are more durable and stronger than hollow blocks, he said. These are held together by concrete poured in holes for steel rods, which serve as miniature columns.

“So I thought that if I build houses whose walls would be columns at the same time, they [houses] would be stronger,” Aman said.

Houses built through Arise are stronger because all walls are shear walls, meaning they can stand alone because, structurally, they act like columns, he explained.

“Shear walls are like the walls where elevators in high-rise buildings are attached. They can withstand the stress and strain caused by earthquake tremors. They are the strongest parts of the building.”

City engineer Leon Palmiano IV said there was no proof yet to support claims that structures constructed through Arise could withstand typhoons or earthquakes.

“Only in the events of typhoons or earthquakes can the Arise houses and other structures claiming to be calamity-resistant be really tested,” he said.

Arise houses

Before building Arise houses, Aman said, the floating foundation must be prepared, which meant removing “unsuitable” materials, such as clay or porous rocks that could weaken the base.

After compaction, an aggregate of materials referred to in engineering terms as Item 201 is placed on the foundation to make it stronger.

Arise housing forms—especially fabricated and reusable molders that hold concrete—are used. Concrete is also poured into molders for the walls, lintels, and roof.

The final monolithic structure, Aman said, could withstand even the strongest typhoon or earthquake.

Palmiano said the claim of Aman that monolithic structures resting on a floating foundation are structurally stable is not without valid footing. “Indeed, structures built through a process employing Arise technology would be much stronger compared to the conventional method of construction.”

Although constructing monolithic structures is not new in engineering, “Aman had deviated much from the usual way of doing it to the extent that his innovation could be credited to him,” he said.

Innovation

Before, Aman said, prospective owners would ask how houses without posts and beams can be strong enough to withstand gusty winds or tremors. The walls of Arise houses are just as strong as posts and beams, he said.

With its floating foundation and monolithic form, an Arise house will sway as one unit during earthquakes, he said. “This would make it more resistant to earthquakes compared to those built conventionally.”

He said he had already applied for patent for his innovation, but he added that he was willing to “return the technology” to the Habitat for Humanity, which he credits for inspiring him to come up with the technology.

Environment-friendly

Arise technology is environment-friendly because it taps reusable and locally available construction materials, primarily the molders, Aman said.

“We reuse almost everything that we use in construction. We do not use coconut lumber as frameworks or scaffoldings. We do not use wood or even plywood. So after the construction, we do not leave waste materials,” he said.

Indirectly, he said, “we save trees while building houses.”

It also takes half the time to erect Arise houses than the conventional method. “This in turn helps in conserving energy,” Aman said

At least 50 Arise houses have been built in Parkview Village Subdivision in Barangay San Felipe and Haciendas de Naga in Barangay Carolina, both in Naga.

A 60-square-meter Arise house costs about P900,000, while a conventionally built one with the same floor area would cost about P1.3 million, he said.

On June 19, Aman was cited by the city government “for his exceptional contribution in developing a new technology in house construction which has always been anchored on global competitive standards, thus providing premium yet affordable lifestyle to a large number of Bicolano homeowners.”

Hi Daily commuter and all PNR thread group,
thanks for your time to drop by. I visited PNR Central station yesterday. I talked to the head of the operation Naga- Lucena, his name is Engr Jiminez. He told me that there are 33 UNITS are exisiting in Naga Central Station. The following information are:

1. They have a number of colors that they will used. They called it PNR BLUE, WHITE, GOLD and maybe 2 more colors will be added( Model 7A-2000). They purchased the train engines in the 90's under GE (General Electric ) . - i will post pictures of the engine in this coming week.

2. Locomotive numbers here in Bicol - DEL 922 AND DEL 918 ( DEL 916 is in lucena )

3. Passenger Coach - 5 coaches with the model 7A-2009 / 4 coaches with the model 7A-2016.

4. Flat Bed trailer - none

5. Cargo Wagon- Box Car

6. A/C - There was A/C before, but presently using non A/C coaches

7. body numbers - 33 units all in all.

**2 Units Train Engine will be operational this september, which is assured by Engr. Jiminez.

Please let me know today, if you have any other concern. This coming week i will be too busy .

Camarines Sur emerges top RP tourist destination for S1-2009 (http://pia.gov.ph/?m=12&r=r05&y=&mo=&fi=p090807.htm&no=40)

by GB Claveria (r5_pia@yahoo.com.ph)

Pili, Camarines Sur (7 August) -- At least 902,202 tourists visited this province in the first six months of this year to emerge at the top of the list among the most preferred tourist destinations in the Philippines.

This is according to a report of the Department of Tourism (DoT) stating tourist arrivals in the leading 16 tourism destinations in the country rose by an average of 16.5 percent reaching up to close to 4 million this first semester despite the global economic crunch, the threat of A(H1N1) and the reduction of some 6% in volume of inbound travel to the Pacific area.

The province has accounted for some 25 percent of the total arrivals in the key destinations with a robust growth in both foreign and domestic visitors by 52 percent and 260 percent, respectively, largely credited to Governor Luis Ray Villafuerte's judicious and timely investments in tourism development.

At the forefront of Villafuerte's tourism initiatives are the Camarines Sur Watersports Complex (CWC), now a wakeboarding mecca and a center of various water-based sports, and the Gota Village Resort which has been adjudged the best eco-tourism destination in the world.

The success of these initiatives serves as a model for other local government units (LGUs) to harness their tourism potentials and optimize local resources to create more economic activity, the report said.

Even the governor Villafuerte himself was a bit amazed with the virtual instant success of his tourism projects.

"CamSur ranked third most visited destination last year, but we were not expecting to rise to the very top in such a short time," he said.

The other fabulous traditional destinations in the country that also showed arrivals growth but CamSur eclipsed in the past six months of 2009 are former top ranker Cebu, Puerto Princesa, Bohol, Boracay, and Puerto Galera.

Villafuerte remains optimistic CamSur can easily hold on to its top tourism destination position with promotion of more international activities like the Cobra Iron Man 70.3 Philippines scheduled at the CWC this coming August 23 where no less than 500 participants from all over the world are expected to join.

Thanks!

Naga City could have been more progressive if not for the loss of PNR quality service that lasted 2 decades. Naga City PNR symbolizes Bicol Pride. Now that they are back, I expect a more Progressive Naga City....

Not yet...I was planning to try Philtranco before, since it has some trips from Cebu to Manila via Bicol Region, but I was too young at that time.

Hmmm, if i have to travel by land from Cebu to Bicol, is this possible? Do you have suggestions?

You can also try via Ormoc. Ormoc is just two hours via fast craft from Cebu. Take Philtranco bus from Ormoc to Manila. You will pass by Leyte and Samar provinces through San Juanico Bridge. Then a ferry will take you to Matnog, Sorsogon from Allen or San Isidro(?) in Northern Samar. Since this will be a first time, you will surely love the sight along the way. If you don't want to sleep over in Allen, take the 6:00 am fast craft from Cebu to Ormoc to make sure that you catch the 9:00 am bus to Manila in Ormoc.

TIGAON, CAMARINES SUR -- ABOUT FIFTY COUPLES, ages 18 to 40 years of age will be participants in a mass wedding rites dubbed as, "Grand Kasalan 2009" part of a 10-day festivity of the Sta Clara "devotional dancing" on August 11 to 12 this year.

But Tigaon Municipal Civil Registrar, Gemma B. Bongulto, said that the mass wedding is not just being held as part of the town's festivities, but to address the alarming number of children being born from unwed parents.

Bongulto said that Tigaon Mayor Arnie B. Fuentebella had noticed that with the estimated 50,000 population of the town, an increasing number of "illegitimate-children" were shown in birth registrations, at the rate of 30% to 40% of newly born infants in this town in 2008.

The Civil Registrar noted that with the passing of a new Republic Act 9255 which legitimize children though their parents are not legally wed, many couples in rural areas have neglected marriage as a legal bonding for common husbands and wives.

Meanwhile many couples in the rural areas of Camarines Sur are in "live-in" relationships and have neglected marriage rites due to poverty, according to reports of many Civil Registrar officers.

Bongulto also said that many rural couples who are on a "live-in" status are unable to afford the expenses of traditional marriage receptions. "They get married, when they can already afford it," Bongulto added.

Moreover, civil registrars in other towns have also a campaigned for unwed couples to get married in mass weddings, where the LGUs and the parish prepare the wedding reception, and the actual marriage rites. (SONNY SALES)

By Mar S. Arguelles
August 6, 2009

LEGAZPI CITY --- At least seven educational institutions in Bicol are competing for the National Search for Sustainable and Eco Friendly Schools, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Bicol said Tuesday.

The national search is a joint activity of the DENR through the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB), the Department of Education (DepEd), Commission on Higher Education (CHED), and Smart Communication.

Gibert Gonzales, EMB regional director, said based on the selection criteria set by contest regional evaluators the schools qualified to vie for the contest search are: Catanduanes State College in Virac, Catanduanes; the Partido State University in Goa, Camarines Sur; Camarines Sur State Agricultural College in Pili, Camarines Sur; and the Camarines Sur National High School based in Naga City; the Cawayan Exterior Elementary School in Masbate; the San Lorenzo National High School in Tabaco City and the Sunshine International School in this city.

Gonzales said the regional evaluation of outstanding eco-friendly schools from elementary to tertiary levels will select winners according to their physical accomplished projects committed to pro-environmental advocacy.

Evaluators would select among the qualifiers three of the region’s finest schools exemplifying sustainable and eco-friendly programs that will represent Bicol to the National Search in November this year.

All winning regional entries will receive cash prizes and plaques of recognition for outstanding environment-friendly and sustainable programs aside from being qualified to the national search.

For the national level prizes include: P50,000 - 1st Prize, P40,000-2nd Prize, P30,000-3rd Prize and plaques of recognition, for each college, high school and elementary level.

“Sa Natural na Paraan, Dengue Maiiwasan” JCI Naga Cariñosa’s Dengue Prevention Project (http://www.bicolmail.com/issue/2009/august06/xparaan.html)
August 06, 2009

Recently we have been overwhelmed by the occurrence of the AH1N1 virus that has been haunting the world for the past months. And as we are all panicking and worrying about AH1N1, we have been surprised by the sudden rise of statistics of another health scare, which we have overlooked and somehow forgotten – Dengue.

JCI Naga Cariñosa together with the City Government of Naga & City Health Office has organized an event tagged as “Sa Natural na Paraan, Dengue ay Maiiwasan!”---JCI Naga Cariñosa’s Dengue Prevention Seminar, held on July 29, 2009 2:00 PM at the Naga City Youth Center. The seminar aims to remind us all of the existence of Dengue which is considered to be twice as deadly as AH1NI.

The seminar was participated by over 300 Health Officers and volunteer workers representing the 27 Barangays of Naga City, all gleaming with expectation on what they could learn from the seminar, not only to fulfill a duty as public servants, but also to learn these things for personal and family benefits, as it is a known fact that without proper knowledge, anybody can be a victim of Dengue.

The event was formally opened by 2009 JCI Naga Cariñosa President Mary Sharon M. Lobrigo. She stressed that JCI Naga Cariñosa is intent on instilling awareness and sharing skills in areas that may benefit the public about safe and healthy, particularly these trying times in which an ordinary family may have financial difficulties for basic needs, much more for medical necessities. This is where the thought of “natural na paraan, Dengue maiiwasan” roots from. That despite this health scare, ther is something we can do in our own little ways.

Former City Councilor and Executive Assistant to the Mayor, Mr. Joe Grageda graced the event with his presence as representative of Mayor Jesse Robredo who at the moment was in Davao . Former Councilor Grageda expressed appreciation to the JCI Naga Cariñosa, believing that the organization has been making worthwhile projects that are truly timely and beneficial to the community. He added that the City Government will never cease in supporting such causes.

UNEP bids farewell, offers requiem mass for Pres. Cory (http://www.bicolmail.com/issue/2009/august06/xunep.html)
August 6, 2009

“Her legacy will remain one of the best gifts that every Filipino anywhere in the world can be proud of --- the legacy of restoring our democracy. Her inspiration became the shining rays of hope during the darkest days of tyranny under the iron rule of martial law. This is the same inspiration that we would like to share with our school personnel, teachers, and most especially to our students.”

This was the clear message that Atty. Remelisa Alfelor-Moraleda, University of Northeastern Philippines President, imparted during a requiem mass held at UNEP’s gym on August 4, in honor of the first woman president who, did not only refurbish our lost pride but also restored the dignity of her countrymen.

The solemn Eucharistic celebration was also a tribute to a woman who had unified the entire nation with her strength and unselfish love for our country. Rev. Msgr. Raul S.Pan, who officiated the mass, said that the entire nation mourns for the loss of a great peace icon, a symbol of democracy and a political exemplar who had led the nation out of an abusive rule and unified all forces to fight the dictatorship.

“We pray that our beloved President Cory will be received by His Father in heaven and reward her for all the goodness that she has done and for the lessons that she has taught the world,” Pan said in his homily.

Ironman 70.3 to further spur tourism in CamSur (http://www.bicolmail.com/issue/2009/august06/xspur.html)
August 6, 2009

Hello Carl! Thanks! You're very much welcome here and surely you will enjoy...

I'm still elated by this very good news that we are already number 1. I can't believe that in just 4 years of hardwork of our very laborious governor, the province is able to top it all.

The province is simply beautiful! Don't forget to visit the Gota Village Resort in Caramoan which has been cited as the best eco-tourism destination in the world and the Camarines Sur Watersports Complex (CWC) right within the Provincial Capitol Complex dubbed the best wake cable park in the world.

:banana::banana::banana::cheers:
