rapuy August 18th, 2009, 05:39 AM Excited na akong pumunta ng CAM SUR next week!:banana::banana:
Worry ko lang eh baka masyadong maraming tourists hindi na ako makapag book ng lodge. Nataon kasi na may triathlon event in time sa pagpunta namin. Matagal na kasi kaming nakakuha ng plane ticket. Im sure marami pa rin turista doon even after the event.
Saan po ba makakahanap ng budget hotel sa Naga? yung accessible lng sana sa major transpo. At saka meron po bang bus o jeep papuntang Sabang yung port going to Caramoan? Thanks!

A series of regional symposiums on biotechnology that started in July will extend up to October this year, the Department of Agriculture-Biotechnology Program Office (DA-BPO) said.
It will culminate with the first National Biotechnology Conference for Teachers on Nov. 27, a major gathering during the National Biotechnology Week celebrated on the same month.
The first of eight regional biotechnology symposia on Enhancing Biotechnology Education was held recently in Batac, Ilocos Norte.
It was organized by the DA-BPO and conducted by the National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology UP Diliman (NIMBB-UPD) led by Dr. Cynthia T. Hedreyda.
The next symposium will be held on August 17 at the Central Philippine University (CPU) in Iloilo City.
The Batac symposium was hosted by the Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) - Department of Biology, College of Arts and Sciences chaired by Dr. Prima Fe Franco. No less than MMSU President Dr. Miriam E. Pascua and Dr. Joselito L. Lolinco, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, graced the opening ceremonies and welcomed the participants and guest lecturers.
The objectives of the symposium are to enhance biotechnology education in the country and to provide the participants with science-based information on the processes and products of modern biotechnology, like genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and cloning.
The venues for the other regional symposia are Central Philippine University, Iloilo City and the University of San Carlos in Cebu City, Ateneo de Naga in Bicol, Palawan State University and Cavite State University in Southern Luzon and Xavier University of Cagayan de Oro. Arrangements with a school in Davao City are still being finalized.

I was at SM City Mall Leasing Office this afternoon to submit some papers for our targeted opening this September. I heard a news there- that 2 Manila based restaurants meant to open at SM City but failed to get a space is apparently opening in Magsaysay Ave., (at West Park and near Molino Grill).
If heard it right both stores are already undergoing construction.
I'll check it out if it's true and give you guys an update. If the news is true- then the said restaurants would again be the first in Bicol.

hakz2007 August 18th, 2009, 01:55 PM Sen. Roxas Pedicabs Through Naga’s Streets (http://voxbikol.com/bikolnews/1632/sen-roxas-pedicabs-through-naga%E2%80%99s-streets)
Tuesday, August 18th, 2009
NAGA CITY- A welcome competitor put 'padyak' (pedicab) drivers in Naga City on a day-off last August 15.
Along with four kids and a city councilor, Senator Manuel "Mar" Roxas drove a pedicab through the streets (javascript:void(0);) of downtown Naga, to the surprise and delight of curious onlookers, some of which exclaimed, "Nagpapadyak talaga si Kuya Mar! (Kuya Mar really knows how to drive pedicab!)
Wearing his signature blue (javascript:void(0);) shirt, Senator Roxas, a presidential (javascript:void(0);) aspirant, drove a blue pedicab from the market of Barangay Abella to the Regent Hotel in Barangay Dinaga. Total distance was about 600 meters. Behind him were hundreds of other blue pedicabs, which paraded through three interconnected streets in the city proper.
But midway through the parade (javascript:void(0);), some drivers were lost on the way. One pedicab driver who did not give his name said, "Makaskason man magpedal si Mar, nagkabarayaan na kami." (Mar drives too fast that he is leaving us behind).
As Roxas drove through the city proper, people came out of establishments and were evidently surprised upon seeing the senator driving a pedicab with four ragged-looking boys. The scene was straight from the senator's TV infomercial.
But while some were cheering, other onlookers were saying otherwise.
Some pedicab drivers who were in the parade were overheard shouting, "Damang-dama na namin!(We feel it!)" But after the shouts, the pedicab drivers said in muffled voices (javascript:void(0);), "Damang-dama na namin ang gutom. (We really feel hungry.)" They were playing on a statement from one of the senator's infomercials.
A pedicab driver who did not give his full name but only identified himself as Jojo (javascript:void(0);) said he felt Roxas was just doing a publicity stunt and was not sincere in being a pedicab driver for a day.

In his statement, Fr. Occiano clarified that the Archdiocese did not make any such demands.

PILI, Camarines Sur—Following its being adjudged as the most-visited tourist destination in the country during the first half of this year, Camarines Sur this week expects over 2,000 more arrivals as it plays host to Cobra Ironman 70.3 Philippines, an international triathlon competition slated on August 23.
In fact, all hotel rooms and resort cottages in nearby Naga City and adjoining towns have been booked as early as last week, and the provincial government had to reserve its mansion suites, cabanas, trailer homes and wood cabins to ensure accommodations for those who would be coming in for this classic competition.
The Camarines Sur Watersports Complex (CWC) at the vast provincial capitol compound in Pili town will serve as the main venue of the events, while Gota Village Resort (GVR) in Caramoan, a coastal municipality some 20 kilometers north of this provincial capital, will be another main attraction for the visitors.
CWC is now considered a wakeboarding mecca and world center for various water-based sports. Since its opening almost two years ago, GVR has emerged as one of the best eco-tourism destinations in the world as listed by the Top Resa 2008 in Paris.
Spearheaded by Gov. Luis Raymund Villafuerte, an aggressive tourism-promotions campaign spiked Camarines Sur’s tourist arrivals. A whopping 902,202 tourists visited the province during the first six months of this year, a recent report of the Department of Tourism (DOT) said.
The figure earned for the province the distinction as the most-favored tourism destination in the Philippines, eclipsing 16 other fabulous spots including former top rankers Cebu, Puerto Princesa, Bohol, Boracay and Puerto Galera, the DOT report said.

hakz2007 August 19th, 2009, 06:56 AM '26 party list, lusot sa initial screening'
8/19/2009 8:30:02 AM
hakz2007 August 19th, 2009, 07:00 AM ^^I thought this is an advocacy group. Accdg. to radio stations in Naga, the said partylist is being funded by SunWest Construction.
The first nominee for representative listed on their application for COMELEC accreditation as partylist is Mr. Zaldy Co of Sunwest Corporation.

After the completion of the provincial “mother leagues” and the Regional Championships, the next stage of the nationwide multi-level search for the best collegiate teams in the country is the Qualifying Zonal games.
At this level of the competitions, the Regional Champions from North/Central Luzon, South Luzon-Bicol, Visayas (excluding Cebu) and Mindanao will compete with teams from Metro-Manila and Cebu leagues. The Qualifying Zonal games will determine the teams that will join the “Sweet 16” Finals of the 2009 Philippine Collegiate Championship games.
Luzon-MetroManila Qualifying Zonal Games
Nine teams will advance to the Luzon-MetroManila Qualifying Zonal games, namely: the North/Central Luzon Regional Champion; the South Luzon-Bicol Regional Champion; the Champion teams from the following MetroManila leagues, NCAA-South, CUSA, UCAA, NCRAA, UCLAAI, and the sixth placers in the UAAP and NCAA.
The top three (3) teams will qualify to the “Sweet 16” Finals. The games are scheduled to be held starting November 6 at either Lucena City or Naga City.
VisMin-MetroManila Qualifying Zonal Games
The eight teams that will advance to this stage are: the Visayas (excluding Cebu) Regional Champion; the Mindanao Regional Champion; NAASCU Champion; three CESAFI teams (no. 2, no.3 and no.4) and the fifth placers of UAAP and NCAA.

Starting with 212 teams belonging to 27 provincial and Metro-Manila leagues, the multi-level competitions will reduce the number of teams that will compete for the title, Philippine Collegiate Champion for 2009, to the “Sweet 16” Finalists.

together with Pete Jacobs of Australia and Tim Marr from Hawaii.
Leading the women's contingent is Lisa Bentley from Canada (an 11 x Ironman Champion) together with Australian Charlotte Paul who won Ironman China earlier this year, and Gina Kehr and Bree Wee both from the United States.

About Camarines Sur
Camarines Sur is quite rich in beauty and natural resources. Being the largest among the six provinces in the Bicol Region both in terms of population and land area, Camarines Sur has nature landmarks, unspoiled forestry, and prisitine beaches which are ideal for travel and tourism, adventure, sports or a plain rendezvous in the province.
Camarines Sur has two major cities–Naga City and Iriga City. Naga is the province’s and the region’s commercial, educational, financial, and cultural center, while Iriga City, a component city, is the center of the Rinconada area.
The white sand beaches and crystal clear waters of Camarines Sur blend perfectly with the summer weather. One attraction during summer is the 12-kilometer white-sanded beach in Pasacao.
Travelling from Naga City to Sabang, San Jose and by boat to Caramoan or directly by land through the Caramoan Peninsula Road, the traveler will marvel at the beautiful beaches with fine white sand beside majestic limestone and marble mountains as well as a taste of adventure in its exotic islets with coves nearby.
For a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean, the Partido area and Mount Iriga offer the best vantage point. As far as nature lovers are concerned, Camarines Sur has Mount Isarog, Malabay Falls, Lahuy Island, Animosola Island, Tayak Lagoon, Isla de Monteverde, Pinaglukaban Island and Umang Cave are among the wonderful sites for adventure, sight seeing, scuba diving, photography or plain nature tripping.

Camarines Sur has a rich history as manifested in its historic spots. There is the Nahulugan Kampana in the municiplaity of Lagonoy, the belfry of the first stone church in the province which also serves as a link to the past. Meanwhile, the Emerald Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes in Calvario Hill in barangay San Francisco, Iriga City is popular destination especially during Holy Week because it is the venue of the“Pagtanggal”, the Iriga version of the re-enactment of the Passion of Christ.
Kinuwartelan, a garrison during the Spanish colonial period and located in Brgy. Perpetual Help, Iriga City,is also a major destinatiion for local and foreign tourists.

There is no doubt one of the attractions of Camarines Sur is Sinarapan , the world’s smallest fish found lin Lake Buhi. Further, Bicolanos are noted for their fondness in in chili-hot dishes. Some of the famous dishes are the “Natong (also known as laing) and Langkang Palusag, also known as “Ginataang Langka”. Majority of the dishes are flavored and boiled in fresh coconut milk spiced with “labuyo”.
Camarines Sur goes all out in the celebration of the Kaogma Festival commemorating its foundation of the province highlighted by a week-long celebration.

By Lynda B. Valencia
MANILA, Aug. 19 (PNA) -- The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in the Bicol Region is intensifying its efforts to ensure the early completion of the Presentacion-Caramoan Peninsula road in Camarines Sur.
DPWH Region 5 Regional Director Danilo Manalang said the Presentacion-Caramoan Peninsula road section leads to various tourist destinations in the province.
"We all know that income derived from foreign and local tourist alike contributes much to our economy. And most importantly this will provide new income opportunities and support the socio-economic development of the locality, thereby improving the lives of our people," Manalang said.
The 48.80-kilometer Presentacion-Caramoan Peninsula road is located in the 3rd congressional district of Camarines Sur.
It Starts at Barangay Poblacion and traverses Barangays Ankolan, Tanawan, Bicalen and San Francisco of the municipality of Presentacion; and Barangays Maligaya, Sta. Cruz, Tabiguian, Pili, Tabgon, Agas, Hanoy, Bikal, Oroc-osoc, Caramoan Poblacion and Guijalo of the municipality of Caramoan.
Manalang said that once completed, the road would also provide commuters with safer access and easier transport of marine, livestock and agricultural products to commercial centers.
Meanwhile, Oscar Cristobal, DPWH assistant regional director for construction operations, said "the total project cost is P298 million and involves the concrete paving of 8.564 kilometers and regravelling of 31 kilometers of road, inclusive of drainage structures.
Data from the Department of Tourism (DOT) show that tourists visiting the Bicol Region has increased in the past months.
DOT Regional Director Maria Ravanilla said "the improvement of the road network would surely further boost the tourism industry in our region."
It will be recalled that a French Network utilized Gota Beach in Caramoan for the location shooting of a famous television program. Gota Beach is fast becoming a household name and is foreseen as the next Boracay Beach in the region. (PNA)

WHEN he is not out in the field, Jesse Robredo spends more time in the glass-walled anteroom of his city hall office where he conducts business as Naga City mayor — usually signing papers and meeting with Nagueños who seek an audience with him.[photo by Alecks P. Pabico]
NAGA CITY — Just about anybody who has avidly followed the remarkable political career of Jesse Robredo exhibited the same perplexed reaction to the news that the multi-awarded chief executive of this premier city had fielded his wife to run for mayor — a position he is also vying for in the coming local elections in May.
It was, after all, a classic move of a traditional politician, and therefore something way out of character for Robredo, who has maintained a reformist image for nearly two decades. But his supporters were quickly reassured. According to the mayor of Naga City, which is smack in the center of Bicolandia, he fielded his wife Maria Leonor, a lawyer with the nongovernmental legal group Saligan — who had reluctantly agreed to file her certificate of candidacy at the last minute — as a calculated move on his part, should the Commission on Elections (Comelec) decide to give due course to yet another pending disqualification case against him. (see Table 1)
Had it been another politician giving such a reason, perhaps eyebrows would remain raised. It's not even as if the disqualification case raises new issues against him (like the previous cases, it alleges that he is not Filipino because his grandfather and father were Chinese), but Robredo says he has been told the odds may be against him this time.
http://www.pcij.org/i-report/2007/Ph_locator_naga.jpg
Location map of Naga City courtesy of Wikipedia
For an interactive map of the city, click HERE (http://naga.gov.ph/map/nagamap.html).Robredo has built such a solid reputation that people do not find it hard to believe most (if not all) of what he says. And so while his opponents have been howling that he is building a political dynasty in Naga, it's an accusation that's not quite sticking.
"They're way too decent to take this route," says Wilfredo Prilles Jr., acting city planning head and Naga's prominent blogger, whose remarks about the Robredos echo those of most Nagueños.
Robredo says that had he really been bent on building a dynasty, he would have done it back in 1998, when he could have easily run for congressman, and his wife for mayor. But as early as then, he had declared that no one in his family would take over his post. "Not a relative, not my wife, not anyone who has blood relations with us," he said at the time.
Now Robredo, who turns 49 in May, is also saying this will be the last election that he will be involved in, and even hints at a possible successor to his position in 2010 from his own slate. But this early, too, even some of his supporters are wondering if the reforms he has instituted are strong enough to last well after he has bowed out of politics.
[LEFT][FONT=verdana][SIZE=2][COLOR=#ff0033]
Whoever will replace Robredo will certainly have a tough act to follow. In the 16 years — likely going on 19 with another electoral victory in May, barring disqualification — that he has been Naga City mayor, Robredo has distinguished himself as a titan among local government officials, reaping in the process accolades locally and internationally not only for himself, but also for the city.
To date, Naga has received more than 150 awards and recognitions in diverse fields of local administration during his incumbency. These include being named Most Cost-Effective City in Asia by the United Kingdom's Foreign Direct Investment Magazine (2005); Public Service Awardee for Local e-Governance from the United Nations Department of Public Administration and Finance (2004); Women-Friendly City Award from the UN-Habitat and the UN Development Fund for Women (2004); Model City for Government Procurement from the World Bank and Procurement Watch (2003); CyberCity Awardee for its i-Governance initiatives from the United Nations Development Program (2002); Dubai International Awardee for Improving the Living Environment from UN Habitat (1998).
Last year, Naga bested bigger and richer urban centers like Manila, Makati, Cebu, Marikina, and Davao when it was recognized as the "Most Business-Friendly City" by the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the third time — it also won in 2003 and 2004 — thus elevating it to the Hall of Fame. Naga is likewise a Hall of Famer of the Asian Institute of Management-Ford Foundation Galing Pook (Innovations Program) Award and the Presidential Gawad Pamana ng Lahi Award of the Department of Interior and Local Government. It was named "Most Child-Friendly City" in 2006 by the Philippine Council for the Welfare of Children, and received the Galing Pook Foundation's Award for Continuing Excellence.
Naga is also one of only nine areas in the country cited by the UNDP as among the leading lights in the implementation of the UN Millennium Development Goals. It leads the Bicol region in achieving the following goals halfway to the 2015 deadline: eradicating extreme poverty and hunger, achieving universal primary education, reducing child mortality, improving maternal health, combating major diseases, and providing basic amenities.
[LEFT][FONT=verdana][SIZE=2][COLOR=#ff0033]Robredo's own awards run up to 21, including being named one of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World (1996) and the Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Philippines. He also received the Konrad Adenauer Medal of Excellence as Most Outstanding City Mayor of the Philippines (1998) and the first ever "Dangal ng Bayan" Award of the Civil Service Commission. In 2000, he became the Ramon Magsaysay Awardee for Government Service.

Largest triathlon in RP set on Sunday
MANILA – World triathlon champions have begun training in the country as they gear for the 1st Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines on Sunday.
Professional triathletes Chris McCormack and Terrenzo Bozzone already arrived in Camarines Sur, where the race will be held.
According to the Ironman 70.3 Philippines website (http://www.ironman703phil.com/), McCormack and Bozzone have been training together. They said the hot conditions in the Philippines are ideal for their preparations for the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii on October 10.
Bozzone is the reigning Ironman 70.3 World Champion while McCormack is a former Ironman World Champion.
Other triathletes entered in the men’s contingent are Cameron Brown from New Zealand, Pete Jacobs of Australia and Tim Marr from Hawaii.
Americans Gina Kehr and Bree Wee, meantime, are in the women’s line-up along with Canadian Lisa Bentley and Australian Charlotte Paul, this year’s Ironman China champion.
Wet conditions
The triathletes are expected to be tested by wet conditions as they bike, swim, and run on Sunday.
“Wet conditions are being anticipated on race day which will add a bit of challenge to the race,” reported the Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines site.
About 600 triathletes from 23 countries registered for the event, including around 400 age groupers and almost 50 relay teams.
Such turnout makes it the largest triathlon to be held in the country.
The Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines race kicks off on Sunday, August 23, at the Camarines Sur Watersports Complex (CWC).

The Ironman 70.3 Philippines will be the very first time triathlon, dubbed the sports of the future, will be staged in international magnitude as part of the preliminary series leading towards the world triathlon championship games.
A relatively modern sport integrated into the Olympic Games only 2000 evolves from fitness competition among US Navy SEALS, the triathlon is speed and endurance multisport that combines 1.2 miles (almost 2 kilometers) of swimming, 56 miles (over 90 kilometers) of cycling and 13.1 miles (over 21 kilometers) of running for a total distance of 70.3 miles or some 113.11 kilometers.
The awesome roll of contenders will include some of the biggest names in multisports today, champions of competitions in various triathlon centers in the world.
Aside from local triathlons buffs, triathletes that have signed up come from the US, Australia, United Kingdom, Japan, New Zealand, Canada, China, Austria, Slovakia, Mexico, Belgium, Norway, Venezuela, South Africa, France, Sweden, Hong Kong, Singapore, Germany, Spain, Korea and Mongolia.

CAMARINES SUR — Some of the world’s top triathletes arrived here from Manila on Thursday, three days before the Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines blasts off at the CamSur Water Sports Complex (CWC).
Eleven-time Ironman champion Chris McCormack of Australia led the foreign professionals participating in the inaugural race, along with compatriot Peter Jacobs, seven-time world cup titlist Tim Marr of the United States and 11-time Ironman champion Lisa Bentley of Canda.
Other international triathletes who had signed up for the event include Terenzo Bozzone of New Zealand, Charlotte Paul of Australia , and Bree Wee and Gina Kehr of the US.
The gruelling race covers a total distance of 70.3 miles or 113 kilometers consisting of 1.9km (1.2mi) swimming, 90km (56mi) biking, and 21.09km (13.1mi) running.
Former RP triathlon team member and 2005 Manila Southeast Asian Games bronze winner Arland Macasieb banners the Filipino contingent led by August Benedicto, Kim Mangrobang and Monica Torres.
Macasieb, who has been competing in several long-distance races, targets a top 10 finish against the strong field.
“I’m probably behind these guys, so it’s hard to get into the Top 5,” said the 33-year-old Macasieb, who has competed in three full ironman races.
Macasieb added the windy conditions would be a challenge both to local and foreign participants and expects a fast bike leg because of the flat course.
The Fil-Am triathlete believes the presence of the world champions could motivate local athletes to beat their personal records.
“It’s the satisfaction of competing in such a challenging sport and against the best athletes in the world that will push us to the limit,” Macasieb said.

hakz2007 August 21st, 2009, 02:30 AM Passage of bill creating new Camarines Sur district deferred
(http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=497906&publicationSubCategoryId=63)(The Philippine Star) Updated August 21, 2009 12:00 AM
MANILA, Philippines - The Senate has deferred passage of a bill seeking to create a new district in Camarines Sur that would allow President Arroyo’s son Diosdado to retain his congressional seat.
Sen. Benigno Aquino III said he intends to interpolate Sen. Joker Arroyo after he sponsored committee report 550 on the floor last Wednesday.
Under Senate rules, a senator can express his wish to interpolate during the debates on a bill.
Aquino, Senate committee on local government chairman, said his office is also communicating with other constitutional luminaries to be able to expound on his position that the bill violates the population requirement of 250,000 inhabitants for every district.
“We would like to request for time to prepare to its fullest degree our interpollation on the measure,” he said. The Senate approved Aquino’s request after no objection was manifested on the floor.
On the other hand, Arroyo said Camarines Sur is entitled to six districts because its population of over 1.6 million is underrepresented in four congressional districts.
“What is asked for now is an additional one instead of additional two,” he said.
Arroyo said two republic acts created Zamboanga Sibugay and another district in Mindanao in 2002, which had similar circumstances as the proposed creation of a new district in Camarines Sur.
“Mr. President, this bill HB 4264 seeks to create additional district in the province of Camarines Sur by recasting the municipalities in the current first district into two,” he said at the Senate floor.
Arroyo said the first district will be divided into two districts to include the municipalities of Libmanan, Minalabac, Pamplona and Pasacao.
San Fernando of the current first district will be consolidated with the municipalities of Gainza, and Milaor of the current second district to comprise the new legislative district, he added. – Christina Mendez

hakz2007 August 21st, 2009, 02:44 AM BLICA whiz kid bags bronze in Math Olympiad (http://planet.naga.ph/2009/08/20/blica-whiz-kid-bags-bronze-in-math-olympiad/)
Joseph Maria Francis C. De Leon, a sixth grader math wizard of Blessed Lights International Christian Academy (BLICA) bagged a bronze medal in the recently concluded 2009 China Primary Math Olympiad in Tianjin, China on August 9-14, 2009.
This information was confirmed by Mathematics Trainers' Guild (MTG)-Philippines, the prime mover of international math competitions for the Philippines last August 13, 2009 through its website www. mtgphil.org.
His feat came after undergoing a year of series of rigidly intensive trainings which included the month-long MTG Mathematical Olympiad Summer Training Program (MOSTP) at MTG Deeco Technological Institute, Sta. Maria Compound, Marcos Highway, Santolan, Pasig City from April 15 until May 15, 2009, the week-long Young Mathematicians' Intensive In-House Training Program (YMIITP) at Iloilo City and the 12-session Mathematical Challenge for Filipino Kids Training Program (MCFKTP). Almost two months before this competition, he underwent another rigid training focusing only on China Math Olympiad questions.
De Leon, together with his team mates in the Philippine team, the Pinoy kids powered by strong determination fought their way out of the mind-boggling contest problems and ended up winning 6 silver medals and 40 bronze medals with the best team award.
Meanwhile, Jomari, as his friends call him, also joined the 2009 International Competitions and Assessments for Schools-English on August 1, and in the 2009 Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) on August 6 where he obtained the Credit Award last year. Relatively, Jomari was also the champion in the 2009 Metrobank-MTAP-DepEd Math Challenge for Grade 5, together with his team mate Danica Mae Berunio, the bronze medalist from BLICA in the 2008 International Math Competition in Singapore.
Finally, De Leon was the third international winner from BLICA after Berunio and Yvonne Gaile Molina who also snatched a bronze medal in the 2008 China Primary Math Olympiad Yi Chang, China.

PILI, Camarines Sur , Philippines – The elite men and women of world and local triathlon are all accounted for, assuring a high-powered field in the Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines, the first world-class event under the World Triathlon Corp., to be held in this scenic province Sunday.
Reigning Ironman world champion Chris McCormack of Australia and defending 70.3 titlist Terenzo Bozzone of New Zealand will spearhead the strong foreign charge, arriving Wednesday night and proceeding immediately to the state-of-the-art CamSur Water Complex (CWC) here.
Arlan Macasieb, a former Southeast Asian Games triathlon medalist, is expected to lead the locals’ bid in this event that has lured 500 ironmen and women who will try to extend the limit of human endurance in three back-breaking events.
American Tim Marr, the 2008 Ironman World champion and Ironman Hawaii 70.3 third placer, legendary Canadian Lisa Bentley, an 11-time winner, and Australian Carlotte Paul, the 2009 Ironman Hawaii world titlist, are also in town for the one-day race extravaganza.
The 33-year-old Macasieb said the field is too strong a top 10 finish wouild be impressive in itself.
“We have two world champions,” said Macasieb referring to McCormack, whom he joined in training camp in Hawaii early this year, and the youthful Bozzone.
“They are going to be way ahead of me but if I can just stay within range with them, maybe in the top six or 10, I think I’ll be okay,” added the 2005 Manila Games bronze medal winner who had participated in three Ironman races, winning one in White Rock last year.
Aside from Macasieb, Nonoy Jopson, Alvin Alindogan, August Benedicto and Monica Torres will lead the host country’s campaign.
Alaska Milk president and CEO and triathlon enthusiast Fred Uytengsu and Cobra Energy Drink and Camarines Sur Gov. L-Ray Villafuerte combined their resouirces and expertise to bring the prestigious event in the country.
“It took us two years to get the Ironman license. But we did it. It was a labor of love. But we were determined,” said Uytengsu, who will also participate in the event covering a distance of 70.3 miles – 1.2 miles of swimming, 56 miles of cycling and 13.1 miles of running.
“Everybody’s doing his share. Gov. Villafuerte has made sure the roads are paved and asphalted. Alaska Milk is participating as one of sponsors and Cobra Energy Drink, which is now No. 1 in the market, saw a perfect way to promote its product and has embraced the Ironman concept,” he added.
Aside from Cobra Energy Drink, Alaska and CWC and Villafuerte, Globe Telecoms, the Department of Tourism, Philippine Airlines, Air Philippines, Oakley, Timex, New Balance, SKI Construction and Gatorade are sponsoring the event with The Philippine STAR, ABS-CBN Publishing and Solar Sports as media partners.
The entry list shows 389 individual participants and 45 relay teams of three entries divided into five in the corporate, 16 in all-male, three in all-female and 11 in mixed categories.
There will also be seven age-group levels like 19-24, 25-29, 30-34, 40-44, 45-49 and 50-and-above with the 35-39 bracket attracting the most competitors with 77 and the 50-and-up drawing 23.
All in all, there will be 270 Filipino competitors, 17 Americans, 10 Australians, 10 Britons, eight Japanese, five Kiwis and the same number of Canadians.
China, Austria, Slovakia, Mexico, Belgium, Norway, Venezuela, South Africa, France, Sweden, Hong Kong, Singapore, Germany, Spain, Korea and Mongolia were other countries represented in this event staking total money pot worth $25,000 with the champion winning $6,000.

Camarines Sur Province (20 August) -- All eyes of the sporting world will focus on this province as nine of the world's best triathlon athletes have signed up for the Ironman 70.3 Philippines set on Sunday, August 23, at the Camarines Sur Watersports Complex (CWC) in Pili town here.
This international competition is sponsored by the Provincial Government here, under the auspices of Governor LRay Villafuerte, in partnership with Alaska Milk Corporation and Asia Brewery.
The nine elite triathletes will be part of no less than 500 expected participants from 23 countries, including the Philippines, who will compete in the triathlon.
The Ironman 70.3 will be staged for the first time in the country as part of a series of triathlons in selected locations to determine this year's World Champion.
The triathlon is a modern sport, actually a multisport integrated into the Olympic Games only in year 2000, that combines 1.2 miles (almost 2 kilometers) of swimming, 56 miles (over 90 kilometers) of cycling and 13.1 miles (over 21 kilometers) of running for a total distance of 70.3 miles or some 113.11 kilometers.
The awesome roll of triathlete-participants is led by Chris McCormack, fondly known in triathlon circles as "Macca", resident of Cronulla, Australia and Bend, Oregon, USA, who has been Ironman Hawaii World Champion, International Triathlon Union (ITU) Olympic Distance World Champion, ITU World Cup Champion, eleven-time Ironman Champion, winner of 19 national titles, seven-time World Cup Champion, Goodwill Games Gold medallist, four-time Triathlete of the Year, two-time Competitor of the Year, four-time Escape from Alcatraz Champion, and four-time Wildflower Half Ironman Champion.

hakz2007 August 21st, 2009, 11:49 AM http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/Shinjonmaru/PhilippinesFlag.gifAnna Isabel “Issai” Villafuerte goes for Gold (http://nikkypals.com/archives/221)
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_F8ZNh5PIYzc/SLm9BOs2KiI/AAAAAAAAAaM/OfwqtWS0sRo/s400/ice+princess.jpg
SHE may be one of the Philippines best hopes for a gold medal in the 2010 or 2014 Winter Olympics or a possible future Miss Philippines contender, but Anna Isabel “Issai” Villafuerte will try to do the unthinkable as she works her way up the amateur ice skating totem pole.
Having a Filipino in the winter Olympics may sound like an oxymoron given that the Philippines is known more for it’s tropical climate than frigid weather. However, from skating on slushy, chopped ice in the Philippines to a pristine, spotless surface in the US, the 13-year-old Issai will look to become an Olympic hopeful for the Philippines come the next Winter Olympics slated for Vancouver, Canada in 2010 or Sochi, Russia in 2014.
Last year, Issai became the first Philippine-born ice skater to qualify to compete in the United States Figure Skating Association (USFSA) sanctioned competitive events. She qualified last year after undergoing a series of rigorous tests conducted by the USFSA. Most ice skaters in the Philippines compete on a recreational level.
The US and world has a stricter standard. An ice skater looking to compete in an Olympic/or USFSA event must pass a stringent test to compete in qualifying competitions. Issai performed well enough to pass.
This year was her first year of competitive events and she surprised many when she arrived to the US in June and nearly swept the competition during her very first USFSA event. Issai bagged three gold, a silver and bronze medal at the Broadmoor Open in Colorado Springs, Colorado last June 24-28. She topped the seven other competitors in freestyle, artistic, and spin events, according to her US Ice Skating Coach Ted Domingo.
“We were all surprised,” said Fe Villafuerte, the mother. “We didn’t expect it.” Domingo did.

Philippine ice skating princess Issai Villafuerte is inching closer to her dream of earning the country’s first stint in the Winter Olympics after she was accepted to train with the Russian national Olympic team under the tutelage of Olympic medalist Maria Butryskaya.
Villafuerte flew back to the Philippines on Thursday morning after successfully passing the month-long evaluation process of the Russian ice skating national team. She arrived onboard a Royal Dutch Airways flight with her parents, Bong and Fe Maria Villafuerte.
The 14-year old skater, who practices at the SM Southmall Ice Skating Center, gained prominence in the ice skating community after winning a cache of gold medals in the US circuit during her first attempt a couple of years ago.
Last year, the teenager brought home 12 gold medals, six silvers and two bronzes from the USFSA 2008 Competition.
To help make her aspiration of earning for the country its first gold medal in the Winter Olympics, Villafuerte’s parents had looked for the best training they could get for their daughter and found their way to Russia to try out for the Russian National Team.
The girl recounted how tough it was to get accepted by the team as she had to undergo six hours of qualifying sessions every day for an entire month.
At the same time, she also had to go on a diet to control her weight.
Villafuerte said the process of getting accepted was so tough that only a handful of Russian nationals are accepted.
“All the sacrifices that I made were all worth it! I’m so honored to be the first Filipino to get accepted and train with Russia’s National Olympic Team.”
Now that Issai has been accepted by the team, she will spend a few months in the Philippines to rest before returning to Russia and go training full-time in preparation for the 2014 Winter Games to be held in Sochi, Russia.

CAMARINES SUR — The thirst for adventure has brought Leo Oracion and Carina Dayondon to the Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines that begins on Sunday at the CamSur water sports complex here.
Having conquered Mt. Everest, the world’s highest peak, the Filipino pair now set their sights on a new challenge that will test their skills and determination. Oracion said he loves to try new things.
“As an athlete, ‘yun na talaga ang buhay ko. Kapag may nakita akong sports na pwedeng salihan, sasalihan ko,” the 35-year-old Oracion said.
Dayondon, on the other hand, said she wanted to improve her swimming technique.
“Ako naman noong una gusto ko lang matutong lumangoy para makapag-compete sa full Ironman in the future. Nag-try na ako sa Olympic distance ng triathlon, ngayon half Ironman naman. Step-by-step lang ako para ma-achieve ko ‘yung goal na ‘yon,” Dayondon, 31, said.
Oracion and Dayondon arrived Thursday night with their fellow mountain climbers to participate in the event that subjects participants to a 1.9-kilometer leg in swimming, 90-kilometer bike run and 21.09-kilometer race on foot.
Oracion is entered in the 30-35 years old division while Dayondon signed up for the 30-34 bracket.
Both mountain climbers concede that they can’t still compete against the sport’s top athletes.
Oracion has seen action in a full Ironman event two years ago in Langkawi, placing among the top 80.
“We’ll try our luck na makapag-finish ng magandang place. And suporta na rin namin ito sa organizer dahil magandang programa ito para sa mga atleta natin,” said Oracion. Dayondon said she would be happy just to finish the race.
“Ang aim ko muna sa ngayon is to finish. At para na rin ma-practice ko ‘yung swim ko,” Dayondon said.
After the race, Oracion and Dayondon will prepare for a more ambitious project, the “Voyage of the Balangay,” where they will retrace and sail onward to as far as Polynesia and Madagascar aboard a newly-built ancient vessel called balangay.
If the schedule pushes through, their voyage, along with eight of his Everest teammates and six Badjaos from Sulu, will leave on September 1 near the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

PILI, CAMARINES SUR — A world-class race is expected despite the sweltering heat when elite foreign triathletes compete in the first Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines here this Sunday.
United States-based Filipino triathlete Arland Macasieb yesterday said the conditions at the Camsur Watersports Complex is turning out to be conducive for solid performances even for those preparing for the coming world championships in Hawaii in October.
“They came here for the heat and they’re getting it,” Macasieb told the Inquirer. “Controlling your energy is what long distance is all about. This is a very good tuneup for Hawaii.”
Top-notch triathletes seeing action include European Ironman champion Cameron Brown, Ironman Hawaii world champion Chris McCormack and 11-time champion Lisa Bentley.
Noted triathlete and Alaska president Wilfred Steven Uytengsu said the event will help promote triathlon as a sport here and showcase the country as a prime sports tourism destination.

All systems go for Cobra Ironman 70.3 Philippines
By Joaquin Henson (The Philippine Star)
Updated August 21, 2009
MANILA, Philippines - Over 500 triathlon enthusiasts are expected to journey to Camarines Sur for the Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines, the country’s first bold attempt to stage a world-class competition using the prestigious World Triathlon Corp. (WTC) brand.
The race itself is set on Aug. 23 but organizers are offering visitors a full five-day schedule, starting Aug. 20, to enjoy the amenities of the Cam-Sur Water Sports Complex and the warm hospitality of the local hosts headed by Gov. L-Ray Villafuerte.
According to project director Princess Galura, bringing the Ironman event to the Philippines is a dream come true.
“For the past two years, Mr. (Fred) Uytengsu has been trying to obtain the rights to stage an Ironman event in our country,” reveals Galura. “Finally, he got it done and we’ve been preparing for this competition since last year.”
Finding a viable site for the 70.3-mile competition (consisting of a 1.2 mile swim, a 56-mile bike and a 13.1 mile run) was crucial.
“We surveyed a lot of possible sites, including Subic, Davao and Cebu but Naga was an easy choice,” notes Galura who was handpicked by Uytengsu to manage the project because of her extensive experience as an event organizer, particularly in sports. “Gov. Villafuerte’s goal is to make Camarines Sur the adventure sports capital of the Philippines. He has an international wakeboard park and a water sports complex with villas, cabanas, a tiki room, two lakes, a clubhouse and a hotel. It’s perfect as a Woodstock of triathlon.”
Mapping out the course for the competition was the next step. With Gov. Villafuerte’s all-out support, roads were paved and asphalted to guarantee a smooth bike ride on the route towards Nato Port and back. The run will go through small barrios and barangays, providing a touch of local color to the event which is drawing participants from at least 23 countries.
“This is a logistical challenge, not a logistical nightmare,” says Galura. “We’ve been planning this for over a year and now, we’re ready to mount an event that will put the Philippines in the world triathlon map.”
Galura says the work has entailed negotiating extra flights from airlines, augmenting Naga City’s fleet of four taxis to an armada of coasters, buses and jeepneys, mobilizing local folk to line the race course waving flaglets and cheering the participants and contracting Melo’s and Florabel’s as food caterers.
“We’re looking at every detail to make this an unqualified success,” adds Galura. “This effort is for our country. If we do a good job, the impact on our tourism industry will be major. The main benefit is we will be able to showcase a sports tourism destination in our country. We will also invite our visitors to check out our other hotspots like Boracay, Cebu, Davao and Bohol. Of course, there is also the benefit of promoting physical fitness and well-being.”
Galura says the participants will be treated to breath-taking sights as they negotiate the race course. The swim will be in a beautiful man-made lake with filtered fresh water pumped in every day. The bike will cover a scenic route with a view of Mt. Isarog, rolling terrain and the ocean. The run will track the tree-lined national highway passing through quaint, small towns and wonderful provincial scenery.
Galura says Sunrise Events, the project organizer, has blocked off five Naga hotels and a hotel in Manila to billet the visitors coming in for the competition.
The entry list shows 389 individuals and 45 relay teams of three participants broken down into the corporate (five), all-male (16), all-female (three) and mixed (11) categories. There are seven age-group levels – 19-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49 and 50-and-up. The 35-39 age group has the most entries, 77, with the 50-and-above checking in at 23. About 70 percent of the competitors comes from the 30-44 bracket.
In terms of country participation, the Philippines has 270 entries, the US 17, Australia 10, England 10, Japan 8, New Zealand 5 and Canada 5. Other countries represented are China, Austria, Slovakia, Mexico, Belgium, Norway, Venezuela, South Africa, France, Sweden, Hong Kong, Singapore, Germany, Spain, Korea, and Mongolia.
The entry fee is $200 for an individual and $300 for the relay team. Prize money of $25,000 is up for grabs. In the professional category, the first placers for men and women earn $6,000 each, second placers $4,000 and third placers $2,000. Additionally, the top Filipino male and female finishers pocket P50,000 apiece.
Galura says three Ironman “titans” are flying over and their presence alone guarantees a high quality of participation. The giants are South Africa-born Terenzo Bozzone of New Zealand (the 24-year-old topped the 2008 Ironman 70.3 World Championships in Clearwater, Florida, with a record time of 3:40:10), 2007 Ironman Hawaii world champion Chris McCormack of Australia and eight-time New Zealand Ironman titleholder and 2006 European Ironman champion Cameron Brown of New Zealand.
Other pros in the Camarines Sur cast are seven-time World Cup champion Tim Marr, Ironman Australia runner-up Pete Jacobs, Devan Leach, 11-time Ironman Hawaii Women’s world champion Lisa Bentley, Gina Kerb, Charlotte Paul and two-time World Championships duathlon silver medalist Lucy Smith.
Among the Filipinos, the top triathletes are Arland Macasieb, Nonoy Jopson, Alvin Alindogan, August Benedicto and Monica Torres. Macasieb claimed a bronze in men’s triathlon and Benedicto, a bronze in men’s duathlon at the 2007 Southeast Asian Games in Bangkok. Torres and Benedicto are in the Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP) national pool of six duathletes.
Other participants are former PBA cager Dickie Bachmann, TV host Drew Arellano, Sen. Pia Cayetano, investment banker Ed Francisco, entrepreneur Miguel Lopez, training and development director Anthony Pangilinan, communications consultant Leica Carpo, socialite Tessa Prieto-Valdes, Uytengsu and business executive Fernando Zobel.
Uytengsu, the prime mover of the event, says his aim is to create a memorable experience for the triathletes. “While the Philippines has not been a major destination for triathlon, we do offer a beautiful country with some of the most hospitable people in the world,” he says. “We would like to develop this event and create the concept of ‘sports tourism.’ Aside from the race, we hope to make this event interesting in many other regards. We will be offering a pre-race camp by Lance Watson and hopefully, have a couple of professional triathletes to assist. We also want to encourage triathletes and their families to see other parts of this beautiful country. We will be developing a few tour packages to make the trip even more memorable.”
Uytengsu says the event is well-timed for the pros and age-groupers booked for the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii or the Ironman 70.3 World Championships in Clearwater, Florida as it will be the last big race before tapering towards either competition.

TWO high school and one elementary school students from Naga City took home one bronze medal each from their triumphant stint in the recently concluded international math competitions hosted by the People’s Republic of China.
John Reinier Bulaong of Ateneo de Naga University and Brian James Masalunga of Hope Christian School were among the bronze medalists in the secondary level from the Philippine team that romped away with a total of 90 medals in the Math Olympiad held in Xiamen and Tianjin, China from August 11 to 16.
The other bronze medalist is Joseph Maria de Leon a sixth grader of the Blessed Lights International Christian Academy, also based in Naga City, who competed in the primary math level last August 9-14.
As one of the biggest delegates, according to a dispatch posted in the Internet by the Mathematics Trainers Guild, Philippines, the Pinoy kids in the primary math level powered by strong determination fought their way out of the mind-boggling contest problems and ended up winning 6 silver medals and 40 bronze medals with the best team award.
Warm coming home receptions are being readied by each school for their victorious students.

Biggest sports spectacle set to unfold in CamSur (http://www.bicolmail.com/issue/2009/august20/xset.html)
PILI, Camarines Sur --- This province will once again take center stage of the global sports limelight as the provincial government and Gov. LRay Villafuerte play host to over 400 local and foreign triathletes from 23 countries who will compete in the Ironman 70.3 Philippines on Sunday, August 23 at the Camarines Sur Watersports Complex here and in selected municipalities.
The Ironman 70.3 Philippines will be the very first time a triathlon, dubbed the sports of the future, will be staged in international magnitude in the country as part of a preliminary series towards the world triathlon championship games.
The awesome roll of contenders will include some of the biggest names in multisports today, champions of competitions in various triathlon centers in the world.
Aside from local triathlons buffs, triathletes have signed up from the US, Australia, United Kingdom, Japan, New Zealand, Canada, China, Austria, Slovakia, Mexico, Belgium, Norway, Venezuela, South Africa, France, Sweden, Hong Kong, Singapore, Germany, Spain, Korea and Mongolia.
The multisport luminaries are headed by the legendary 2007 Ironman Hawaii champion and eight-time New Zealand Ironman titleholder Chris “Macca” McCormack of Australia; New Zealand’s Terenzo Bozzone who set the record time of 3:40.10 and was last year’s winner in the Ironman 70.3 World Championships in Clearwater, Florida and 2006 European Ironman Champion Cameron Brown of New Zealand; seven-time World Cup champion Tim Marr and Ironman Australia runner-up Pete Jacobs.
Equally prodigious female triathletes are eleven-time Ironman Hawaii Women’s champion Florida-born now Hawaiian resident Lisa Bentley; Charlotte Paul of United Kingdom who was IM Australia and Port Macquarie Half Ironman champion in 2007; Californian Gina Kehr who was Southbay Triathlon and Stealhead 70.3 champion last year; and Hawaiian Bree Wee, a consistent top-finisher of many triathlons.
Filipino triathlon standouts include Alaska Milk Corp. CEO Wilfred Steven Uytengsu, Sen. Pia Cayetano, ABS-CBN’s Ernie Lopez, Budget Secretary Rolando Andaya, Jr., Tessa Prieto-Valdez of Philippine Daily Inquirer, Fernando Zobel of Ayala Corporation, Jonjon Rufino, Arland Macasieb, Nonoy Jopson, Alvin Alindogan, August Benedicto and Monica Torres.
A relatively modern sport integrated into the Olympic Games only in year 2000 evolved from fitness competitions among US Navy SEALS, the triathlon is speed and endurance multisport that combines 1.2 miles (almost 2 kilometers) of swimming, 56 miles (over 90 kilometers) of cycling and 13.1 miles (over 21 kilometers) of running for a total distance of 70.3 miles or some 113.11 kilometers.
The swimming leg Ironman 70.3’s Camarines Sur edition will be at the Lago del Rey and wake cable lake of Camarines Sur Watersports Complex (CWC), cycling from the CWC to Nato, Sagñay and back, and running from the CWC to barangay San Antonio of Milaor and back.
Now two years in the making, Camarines Sur was the organizers’ easy first choice as event venue, eclipsing other popular sites like Cebu, Davao and Cebu primarily because of the renowned CWC, a tourism flagship project of Gov.Villafuerte with ideal watersports facilities and on-site world-class accommodations and amenities. Among the Filipinos competing are Philippine Daily Inquirer columnist Tessa Prieto Valdes and her husband Dennis, who will see action in the swim stage and will be joined by teammates Victor Paterno (bike stage) and South African Sias Els (run stage).
Villafuerte said Camarines Sur is already buzzing with excitement as locals are expected to line the race route to cheer for Filipino triathletes.
The main highway here used by vehicles coming to and from Manila, Visayas, and Mindanao will be closed Sunday for five hours, from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m., to give way to an international triathlon event, said an advisory from the provincial government of Camarines Sur.
The traffic advisory covers a portion of the RP-Japan Friendship Highway, from the village of Palestina, Pili town to Tigaon and Sangay towns all in Camarines Sur.
According to the provincial government, its aim is to protect and give way to participants of the triathlon event for the cycling portion of what it considers to be the biggest tourist-drawing event to be held here.

The BACS Meet, revived after almost three decades, is the developmental, skills-honing and friendly competition arena for Catholic schools in the Bicol Region. Although the schools come together to compete in the fields of athletics and culture (the academic field may soon be revived also), the ambience and the principles of assembly cement the unification of these educational institutions, uncompromisingly upholding the Catholic teachings which students assimilate in the classrooms.
This year’s BACS Meet was hosted by the CEACAL Cluster (Catholic Educational Association of Caceres and Libmanan) in Naga City, and events were held at the Ateneo de Naga University, Universidad de Sta. hakz2007 August 22nd, 2009, 03:04 AM UNEP students tackle issues in leadership forum (http://www.bicolmail.com/issue/2009/august20/xunep.html)
August 20, 2009
Come 2010, the youth of today will be faced with the challenge of choosing the country’s future leaders. In their hands, rest the challenge of molding the fate of our next generation. It is therefore an imperative that their decisions should emanate from a socially conscious judgment and morally upright ground. This is also an imperative that the University of Northeastern Philippines (UNEP) is continuously pursuing.
Their eagerness in realizing this endeavor was made more evident when UNEP Mass Communication and Political Science students lead the pack of eager would-be voters in expressing their thoughts during the recently concluded leadership forum held over the weekend. The activity was spearheaded by ABS CBN News Channel (ANC).
Anchored by ABS CBN Veteran News and Public Affairs presenter Tony Velasquez, the forum was simultaneously held over three (3) live points in the country ; ABS CBN Cagayan De Oro, ABS CBN Bacolod and ABS CBN Naga. The August 14 activity was the third leg on a series of leadership forum conducted by ANC in its quest to guide the youth in picking the next set of leaders who will be holding the reign of our country.
Invited guests were Pampanga Governor Ed Panlilio, Olongapo City Councilor John Carlos “JC” Delos Reyes, Global expert and Leader on Integral Sustainable Development Jesus Nicanor “Nick” Perlas and Naga City Mayor Jesse M. Robredo. They were dubbed by Velasquez as the “new emerging leaders and new faces who offer new perspectives on politics and governance.”

August 20, 2009
NAGA CITY --- How much does the provincial government of Camarines Sur get from turning Plaza Rizal based in this city into a tiangge for at least three times a year?
A concerned source who felt disturbed by the ongoing squabble as a result of a city ordinance strongly disallowing the use of plazas within the city for commercial purposes and the capitol’s insistence that it has ascendance over the use of the plaza, alleged that the organizer of the flea market, identified by newsmen as Primo de Guzman, pays as much as P2.1 million for nine months use of the plaza.
For the forthcoming Peñafrancia fiesta, according to him, de Guzman has been assessed to pay the amount of P0.7 million for a period of three months, until November this year.
In a letter sent to Gov. LRay Villafuerte exposing alleged collusion in the renting out of the spaces at the plaza, copy furnished, among others, the Archbishop of Caceres, a radio station, the provincial auditor and this paper, the source wrote the governor that while the provincial capitol gets only little from the transaction, the organizer actually earns three to four times more.
In a phone interview with the Bicol Mail, Camarines Sur Provincial Treasurer Mario Alicaway said transactions regarding the use of Plaza Rizal are handled by the Office of the Governor for which his office only issues receipt for any amount received in favor of the provincial government.

August 20, 2009
NOW on its fifth year of sustained public service, the Public Safety Office (PSO) of the City Government of Naga has ably performed its tasks as an effective and pro-active arm in the maintenance of public safety and security.
This was emphasized by Mayor Jesse M. Robredo who said the PSO has been instrumental in enabling the City Hall and other government agencies to be responsive in addressing the basic needs of the citizenry, particularly in terms of public convenience and safety.
The City’s Public Safety Office, which is under the immediate supervision of PSO Executive Officer Joselito Del Rosario, was created thru City Ordinance No. 2005-056, otherwise known as “ An Ordinance establishing the Public Safety Office” authored by City Councilor John G. Bongat and the then City Councilor Jose L. Grageda.
PSO maintains coordinative functions with various private and public agencies to ensure public protection, order and safety, such as the Philippine National Police, Bureau of Fire Protection, Chin Po Tong Volunteer Fire Brigade and Naga White Volunteer Fire Group, Barangay Tanod, Bantay-Kataid, and other law enforcement bodies and anti-crime watch volunteer groups.
It also assists the Health Emergency Management Services of the Bicol Medical Center and that of other private health centers such as the St. John Hospital and the Mother Seton Hospital, schools and universities.

IRIGA CITY --- The beleaguered General Manager of Iriga City water District (ICWD) who was ordered arrested earlier along with his wife due to criminal complaints filed by the mayor’s husband scored a victory amid intense animosity between him and members of a political clan here.
This, after the Civil Service commission (CSC) through the Commission Secretariat and Liaison office (CSLSO) ordered the reinstatement of GM Perfecto Ignatious Chua-Cheng, Nearly a year after he was suspended by the ICWD board on April 11, 2008 for alleged inefficiency in the performance of duty.
The resoulution dated March 31, 2009 which was just received recently by Chua-Cheng were signed by commissioners Cesar Buenaflor, Mary Ann Fernandez-Mendoza, Ricardo Saludo and attested by Director Dolores Bonifacio.
Said suspension stemmed from the administrative cases filed by the board against Chua-Cheng under ICWD case no. 2007-05 and 2007-06, respectively for his alleged failure to submit some pertinent documents as required of him by the board, such as, implementing guidelines of a resolution, relative to the incentives for informers of violators of R.A. 8041 or the Water Crisis Act and data on the production assessment policy.
