good afternoon father..this year Naga City had been visited by many prominent businessmen and corporate CEO such as Lucio Tan,JAZA,Robina Gokongwei and most recently Rex Drilon of Ortigas & Co. i really believe that most of them will not come here if they're not optimistic with the present business situation here in Naga

thanks, son, hehehe... this is surely good news.

Rogelio dela Rosa sings "Sarung Banggi" (1947)
by happyslix (http://www.youtube.com/user/happyslix)

Here's the legendary Filipino actor Rogelio dela Rosa as Fernando Flores singing the title song of the Filipino motion picture "Sarung Banggi"("One Evening"-LVN Films 1947) to Rosa Rosal, as his girlfriend Marina (Mila del Sol) and the rest of his friends back in Bicol listen in on their radio.
At the end of his song number, Fernando dedicates his song to the woman who has inspired him the most, but it's not who you might have expected...

Oj8haa5prbc&feature=related

Sarong Banggi was considered for many years as a folksong (i.e., authorship unknown) until research led to the recognition of its author (Potenciano Gregorio? pls check) from Albay (Sto Domingo?).

During the war, the song was given subversive undertones. read this way, one can consider the "hinuni ning sarong gamgam" as a call from the Motherland to rise up in arms ("dagos ako bangon..").

i did my own creative reading of the song for a philosophy paper at the ateneo de manila. interesting to see the many rich, powerful meanings of the song through different eyes.

i came across an article many years ago saying that Sarong Banggi was adopted theme song of one World Expo around the 40s or 50s, i think.

^^ You're welcome Hakz. :D
In addition to those above-mentioned, the Penafrancia Shrine and the Penafrancia Museum are also found at the San Felipe end of the avenue, just after the road going to Magsaysay.:)

and if you wanna go down memory lane:

Penafrancia Av (Francia, for short) is one of the older routes in the city. colonial documents refer to it as Via Gainza at one point- to honor one of Bikol's best Spanish bishops, Francisco Gainza, who was a builder of institutions (Santa Isabel, etc) and people.

Whoa! really big...:)
Marhay na aga man po tabi saindo Pau and sonof ignatius!

:lol::lol:May nakahalata bang Aglipayan sayo dun?

no one noticed. i was as oblivious to them as they were to me hehehe.. it's one for the books hehehe.. rituals and symbols are actually very similar. one main difference is that Aglipayans (also called Phil Independent Church or Filipinistas).

i think Lag'noy has the most Aglipayans in CamSur.

Naga's population is 160,516 (NSO census as of Aug. 1, 2007, not including the last two years). Naga remains the highest in population density in the region due to its small land area (119.6 sq km, as of 2004; 27 barangay as of 2009).

City population was at 137,810 in the Census as of May 1, 2000.

BARANGAYS IN NAGA

Most populated: Concepcion Pequena
Least Populated: Dinaga
Biggest Land Area: Carolina
Smallest Land Area: Lerma

Pwede ring Pequena ang most densely populated brgy in Naga..pero parang Calauag (2nd in population nd reltvly small land area).. Hindi ko lng sure..

i believe population in the upper barangays of Pacol and Carolina will increase as new villages are being built there, one after the other. concepcion was considered far in my younger years and jeepneys at one point only reached pepsi (haloy na talaga ini hehehe) but the rise of many subdivisions in the area changed the picture.

Hi Father.

I have been there in the Naga City Ecology Park. It is indeed beautiful and I love those trees that provide the needed shades during the hot days of summer. It is a city project in partnership with Isarog Garden but entry is not free. The last time, entrance costed P10.00. Sadly, not all children can pay P10.00 for a day's fun in the park. It is also not very accessible.

perhaps they can consider giving poor kids free entrance fee in the Eco Park. and high time, too, to beautify and redesign the Civic Center. i guess the playground there is free. Civic Center is more accessible.

The Comelec and NSCB therefore must be corrected like the case of Caloocan which was previously spelled Kalookan.

"Caloocan City Mayor Enrico"RECOM" Echiverri, requested the COMELEC that the exact spelling of Caloocan City be reflected in all communications, election forms, correspondence and other issuances of the Commission. Request letter to COMELEC dated 26 January 2009."

Thanks for the additional infos. It helps.

at one point Caloocan really shifted to "Kalookan", an attempt, i suppose, to go back to its roots: a place where ther are many "look" (lake), emphasizng the Tagalog form, rather than the Hispanized spelling.

in the same way, more contemporary writing in our region (as we were acquainted in our literature classes a decade ago and among the writers' circle) prefers Bikol (with a "k") than Bicol ("c"), again to emphasize what's native/ indigneous. this is actually a trend in writing in the local languages, or about local culture even in other places. to go back to one's roots beginning with reclaiming one's identity and character before colonial times.

indeed spelling makes a big difference :-)

^^ I forgot about Civic Center but it is even hardly maintained. The area allocated for children's playground is also very small. Good that the swimming pool is still being maintained.

Buenas noches po Fr asin sa gabos.

A Good Year for Tourism
By VINCE G. LOPEZ
December 26, 2009, 4:15pm

Tourism Undersecretary Edu Jarque attributes the success of the tourism industry this year to ‘pride of place, a strong sense of environmentalism complemented by promotional fares,' thus spurring domestic tourism.

"People should look out for new activities and events more than just destinations. Activities such as zip lines, wakeboarding, bird-watching, glamping, pilgrimages should lead to new exciting destinations in the country,” said Eduardo Jarque Jr., Department of Tourism (DoT) Undersecretary regarding the future of Philippine Tourism.

The past year has seen gigantic growth in domestic tourism with more than a hundred percent growth in Camarines Sur. But overall, there was a 17 percent growth in tourist arrivals in the country which made 2009 a good year for Philippine tourism.

“Our destinations have claimed international famethe Puerto Princesa River in the New 7 Wonders of Nature, (one of the top 77 sites currently in the running), Cordillera was named one of the “50 Places of a Lifetime: Greatest Destinations in the World,” by the National Geographic-Traveler magazine, our dive sites have been hailed as one of the best in several international magazines,” Jarque said.

The North East Asian Market accounted for the bulk of the total foreign tourists with 59 percent while the Chinese and Taiwanese arrivals posted 23 percent and 16 percent respectively. The country has also garnered numerous awards in tourism such as “Asia’s Most Popular Destination” in the World Travel Fair in Shanghai, China. The Philippines was also among Japan’s Top Five Diving areas and is considered as one of the world’s top 100.

“I attribute the year’s triumph to the sensible cohesion and balance of different programs and campaigns. The markets have matured and awareness for new destinations is up. Tourism stakeholders, private sectors different groups and local government units are working together, and are in sync,” Jarque added.

But it was also the DoT’s programs that brought in tourists to explore the country, particularly its recent partnership with MTV Asia - “Biyaheng Pinoy with Apl”. The campaign gave a fresh look at promoting the Philippines to other parts of the world. The DoT also strengthened the foundation of tourism with the Mabuhay Guides Training Program and Tourism Apprenticeship Program.

Kayaking was a hit for tourists seeking an adventure at the launch of the Kayak Philippines book at the Philippine Travel Exchange ’09 (Phitex). The book highlights Kayak trails in the country such as beaches, lagoons, rivers, lakes, springs and fjords.

But the highlight was the recent convening of the Tourism Congress that is expected to benefit the industry next year. The DoT promulgated the implementing Rules and Regulations of the Tourism Act of 2009 or Republic Act No. 9593.

“A lot of the changes that the structure will undergo with the Tourism Congress will be for the best,” concluded Jarque.

A dojo (道場, dōjō?) is a Japanese term which literally means "place of the way". Initially, dōjō were adjunct to temples. The term can refer to a formal training place for any of the Japanese do arts but typically it is considered the formal gathering place for students of any Japanese martial arts style to conduct training, examinations and other related encounters.

The concept of a dōjō as a martial arts training place is a Western concept; in Japan, any physical training facility, including professional wrestling schools, may be called dōjō depending on the context.

CARAMOAN X 6 ] Just imagine an Andok's by the beachfront (http://theswankstyle.blogspot.com/2009/12/caramoan-x6-jun-de-leon-gathers-five.html)

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2525/4181454676_f6f42473d5_o.gif (http://www.flickr.com/photos/36403993@N02/4181454676/)

Jun de Leon captures the early morning of Caramoan Island, inspired and reminiscent of a Juvenal Sanso. “Photographs capture a precise moment in a still image. How you take the subject the second you click on your shutter will not be the same the second after. There are numerous moments to be captured in such a breathtaking island.”

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_UqIat8sOucw/SyTkuN2ylcI/AAAAAAAAAOc/AHkA8hejM58/s400/caramoan.gif (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_UqIat8sOucw/SyTkuN2ylcI/AAAAAAAAAOc/AHkA8hejM58/s1600-h/caramoan.gif)

As long as they preserve its beauty, and not turn it into Boracay, we're all for promoting Caramoan as the next big destination. Jun de Leon, together with Camsur poster boy L-Ray Villafuerte, recently gathered five of the country's most prominent young photographers to capture their own visions of this prized island. The works will be on exhibit beginning this Thursday at Greenbelt 5. Left photo (from left): Jake Versoza, Paolo Pineda, Jo Ann Bitagcol, Jun de Leon, Sara Black and Mark Nicdao.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2578/4181455586_9380a47b99_o.gif (http://www.flickr.com/photos/36403993@N02/4181455586/)

Jake Versoza uses blacks, grays, and whites in his docu-photo treatment. “I wanted to document the daily lives of the people there because they thrive off nature’s bounty both in land and sea.” How do you capture warmth on film? He answers,” I was there during a strong typhoon but found peace hanging out with the locals. That’s warmth.”

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4012/4181455240_87a686a8d8_o.gif (http://www.flickr.com/photos/36403993@N02/4181455240/)

“As a photographer, whenever I go to a place, I always observe how the light there falls and how that affects the color of everything," says Sara Black. Caramoan has its own color palette and I enjoyed tremendously photographing that in its simplicity… the color in the little things. For me, it’s such a sincere joy to appreciate something as miraculous as color.”

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2579/4180691731_7397bfc7cb_o.gif (http://www.flickr.com/photos/36403993@N02/4180691731/)

“It’s the emotion and feeling of the place. It’s a rollercoaster ride. Caramoan has the balance of things you need when you’re on vacation mode. It has a bit of everything you want.” A natural portraitist, Mark Nicdao captures smiles, gleeful eyes, and innocence in his photographs.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2646/4180691243_4f7f83f8c1_o.gif (http://www.flickr.com/photos/36403993@N02/4180691243/)

Jo Ann Bitagcol, on the other hand, captures everyday scenes in the island. “Everywhere I go I make it a point to discover its beauty, life, and soul. And I saw all of this in Caramoan,” she says.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4044/4180690759_4b276c3a66_o.gif (http://www.flickr.com/photos/36403993@N02/4180690759/)
“We rode the chopper going to Caramoan from CamSur," says Paolo Pineda, and seeing it from that vantage point was just surreal. I wanted to capture the island like a classic painting… timeless.”

As per an SSC forumer who works as a real estate broker for ALI, they have no expansion for Naga. As per the the chart also, it has no arrow point to us, which really means we have no Ayala expansion.

Shakey's is, i think, the longest- staying non-homegrown fastfood place in Naga.

During my elementary days, my Manila-based aunt would frequently take us to the old Shakey's everytime she visits, especially during the Penafrancia festivities. It used to have a very homey ambiance unlike the new one.

3 die in Christmas Day fire in CamSur (http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/breakingnews/regions/view/20091226-244031/3-die-in-Christmas-Day-fire-in-CamSur)

By Jonas Cabiles Soltes
Inquirer Southern Luzon
First Posted 14:38:00 12/26/2009

NAGA CITY, Philippines – Three siblings, including an infant, died on Christmas Day when their house caught fire while they were asleep in Barangay (village) Borongborongan in Milaor town, Camarines Sur, a report from the town police said Saturday.

The victims were Maria Cristina Hormina, 5, and her sisters Clarise, 7 months, and Kaila, 3. Their brother, Vince Clarence, 8, survived.

Senior Police Officer 1 Rolando Malaluan of Milaor town police said the fire occurred at about 9 p.m. on Christmas, while the parents of the victims were at their neighbor's house, watching television.

The curtain near the door of the victims' house caught fire from a kerosene lamp left by their parents. Fire then spread to the blanket used by the victims.

Because it was made of light materials, the house was razed to the ground before help came.

SPO2 Arnel Baduya of the Bureau of Fire Protection in Milaor town said they had no firetruck.

I'm sure ignatius knows it.

Ingat na lang po.

hakz, kevin, jamir: it's SANTONJA street, named after a Spanish priest in colonial Naga. what he has done i now forget :-) if i remember it correctly, i think a picture of him is on one of the pages of Danny Gerona's book on Bikol, "From Epic to History". (a Vincentian priest or member of the Padres Paules who used to run the Naga seminary, i think)

parallel to Santonja is Paz street, leading to Philamlife.

SENTIMENTAL STREET NAMES:

Elias Angeles, Lerma, Felix Plazo, Arana, Abella are named after the Quince Martires.

Queborac. Back of Ateneo, Bagumbayan Sur area. sabi daa, hale sa "ki burak", owing to the abundance of flowers in the area in earlier times.

Igualdad. Before the street was renamed Jaime Hernandez Av to honor the UNC founder, some concerned citizens objected to the renaming, citing the significance of Igualdad. Igualdad (Equality) as we know, along with Fraternity (yes, our Fraternidad street in Tabuco!) and Liberty were the slogans of the French Revolution which inspired some of our Filipino revolutionaries vs Spain.

i remember reading an article by Atty Sol Santos many years ago, defending Igualdad :-)

I remember in the past there was a proposal in the Sangguniang Panlungosd to rename Santonja St. to Msgr. Nicanor Belleza but was opposed because historical authorities in Naga said it's current name has historical significance.

re: msgr nick. i remember him as a big man with a big heart and a kind smile. he was a kind priest who was director of naga parochial and our parish priest at the cathedral. many mourned his death.

^^ If we have Evangelistga St. as the shortest, the longest on the other hand is Sen. Tecla San Andres Ziga St named after one of the very prominent political figures in the past Bicol has produced. She is i think the first female Bar Topnotcher and first female member of the Philippine Senate.

just curious- where is Ziga Street?

Kinastilyohan, the street between Plaza Quezon and Plaza Rizal, used to be the spot where the yearly bamboo "kastilyo"/ tower was put up for the Encuentro (Salubong in Tagalog), the beautiful ritual at daybreak of Easter Sunday where little girls dressed as angels sing to the Risen Christ. They are lowered from the bamboo tower through a rope tied around their bodies.

after some years the staging of the Encuentro was brought back to the Cathedral grounds. A permament structure (concrete tower) stands at the patio near the seminario.

it seems that this concrete permanent structure for the Encuentro (towers built at the church patio for this sole purpose) is unique to Bikol. in other places, either a non-permanent wooden/ bamboo is put up every year, or there is no practice of angels singing a song to the Risen Christ and His Mother or the main angel being lowered to remove the veil covering the Sorrowful Mother. (forumers are certainly welcome to help verify the uniqueness of this practice :-)

Finally, Kinastilyohan is surely the street that every competing officer, cadet, majorette, sponsor, band, marching unit of the Penafrancia Military Parade will not miss. it is here that they come to the judges' full view. it is after this that they make the pass-in-review.

Trivia: Where is Cathedral Street?

re: msgr nick. i remember him as a big man with a big heart and a kind smile. he was a kind priest who was director of naga parochial and our parish priest at the cathedral. many mourned his death.

just curious- where is Ziga Street?

Sen. Tecla San Andres Ziga Road stretches from corner Magsaysay and Peñafrancia aves up to Panicuason.

She is a Nagueña. She is the first female bar topnotcher (1930). Although elected member of the phil senate, she was not its first female member (I am correcting my previous post).

Cathedral St. is one of the short streets perpendicular to Ateneo Ave. towards north.

Many are already using J. Hernandez in print. Eventually, Igualdad will be forgotten. I just wish it was not changed. Bayawas St. would have been an equally important road to name after the founder of the university.

Igualdad Interior is the name of the barangay.

Naga City, Camarines Sur: Next PSM Destination

The 39th PSM Convention and Scientific Meeting will be held in Avenue Plaza Hotel, Magsaysay Avenue, Naga City, Camarines Sur, Philippines on April 29-30, 2010 with the theme “Global alert! Microbes @ work!”.

Camarines Sur is at the heart of the Bicol Region in Southern Luzon, Philippines. Bicol is being rediscovered as Natures’ Paradise and place for water recreation. In Camarines Sur you can find the captivating islands and beaches of Caramoan with unspoiled beauty and the world-famous Watersports Complex that “pushes one’s adrenalin to a new high”. The majestic Mayon Volcano in Albay definitely wows every visitor. In the pristine seawaters of Donsol, Sorsogon, one can have the great experience of swimming along side whale sharks: locally known as butanding. There are many other natural attractions like the beautiful Lake Buhi, home to “Sinarapan”, the world’s smallest edible fish; the striking Bulusan Volcano with the calm Bulusan Lake at its feet; and the picturesque Mt. Iriga, abode of indigenous Aeta.

The annual convention is set at an earlier date due to the forthcoming Presidential Elections in May 2010. PSM has chosen a world class hotel as convention venue.

The theme is fitting for today’s pressing world concerns: health, food security, water crisis, global warming, energy and the environment. Microbiology and biotechnology are key fields that unlock the treasure chest of various scientific tools to tap microorganisms and other living organisms for the benefit of man and preservation of nature. Indeed, microbes are always at work for us and for mother nature.
