View Full Version : Naga and Iriga Cities, and Camarines Sur Province
fil07 February 2nd, 2010, 06:04 AM ano daw kung may nahuhukay man sindang mga artifacts dyan..!?! hehehe
the Cathedral and minor seminary are already old. I was thinking before that if we will make an excavation in that area for sure we will find some old stuffs from the Spaniards and old Nagueños.:)
nice pictures pau.Ü thanks for the update. I didn't notice that they already starting to constract the Porta Mariae. It looks big. Lots of changes and developments in preparation for the 300 yrs of devotion to Our Lady of Peñafrancia. Hope that the church and the city would also resolved their conflict before the big event.(pero sa hiling ko dai pa mangyayari..:ohno:)
Hopefully Mr. GP Priela will share to us the blue print of Porta Mariae through his father, Mr. Beda Priela.Ü
yan man naisip ko. dapat may bantay ta kuruanon sana yan kan workers. hehe
nahiling ko na an blueprint kan miting kan sumaro bikolnon last november. may mga noted people na itatàpil sa pwerta, like robles, barlin etc.
oragon.com February 2nd, 2010, 06:20 AM sana nga wag mahaluan ng pulitika.. for sure the surprise guests there are the politicians who will run in May 2010 election.
I'm excted to watch this festival. I was planning before to go to Iriga during the event but I have an activity in Davao. tsk tsk.. sayang..
next year sana.Ü
I think the first Gayon Bikol was held here in Naga when Mr. Meda Priela was still the Governor of Metro Naga Chambers of Commerce. They were the ones who organized the event in Naga. I think Naga hosted the event for two year then it was held in Legazpi, then Intramuros and now Iriga.Ü
I remember it was full of colors. Very vibrant atmosphere. It was the longest street dancing parade in Naga. :)
Sam, don't foget to post pictures here of Tinagba and Gayon Bikol.
t'was a Gayon Bicol in Naga held summer 3 years ago...1st time to be held in the in Bicol..jointly sponsored by the city and povince...both were too generous to have Plaza Quezon and Plaza Rizal as the venue. Exhibits filled-up every corner of the plazas. Nightly performances of Bicolano artists add color to the event...a grand showcase of bicolano festivals and pageantry ends the spectacular Gayon Bicol sa Maogmang Lugar were the contingent of Cam. Sur featuring the hottest festival in the world "Kaogma" emerged as the champion of the street dancing competition.

Yes Dustin his real name is Father Xavier Olin, Atenian jesuit priest. Jamir and Father himself can probably share more info. I believe there are other jesuit priests joining us on this thread soon.
By the way thank you for the kind words i read in your post previously. I guess these forumers love their respective cities not only Naga but Iriga and Camsur.
Keep on visiting us and we would highly appreciate any comments or suggestions on how to improve our humble threads. But please break it to us gently... as we are humans too ... prone to mistakes... definitely not perfect ....with warts and everything...:) thanks

Oh I see! Kaya pala. I had a hint pa before pero ngayon lang ako naglakas-loob para magtanong. I have high regards for Jesuit priest. It's a long story. Muntik na nga akong maging pari but I guess it wasn't meant to be. Pero ngayon nagvovolunteer ako sa church namin pag umuuwi ako. At madalas din ako sa Carmelite Monastery sa Angeles City.
Siguro ang saya saya ninyo. Imagine you have a doctor and a priest as member. I could only envy you.
I frequent your thread kasi I am also excited about "what's new" in Naga or Camsur. Sikat na sikat ang Camsur dito lalo na nung maglocation ang Survivor Franchise dyan.
I've been to Naga only once pa lang. I feel I have grown a personal attachment sa lugar kaya nga I've been wanting to come back.
As of now you are doing just great...no need for comments or suggestions or whatsoever. Thank you.

I'm excited with this edifice!
So sa Barlin side man nanggad sya ning Cathedral. I thought it was going to traverse the Barlin street like the Triumphal Arch in Paris. So it's indeed a portal going in and out of the Cathedral. So I guess the Cathedral's Barlin gate will be demolished. Am I right?
Dear all, this is the partial report from Mr. Priela's update last Januar 31, 2010.
4 Deliverables for the period
-complete the northrail/southrail linkage project phase 1
-open the bicol commuter service
-reopening of the manila bicol line
-implement rationalization of the PNR
What's the Bicol Commuter Service?:dunno:
average speed of the commuter train is 40Kph but with the newly replaced ties, it can run 50-70Kph
With this being said, how fast will Naga be reached if I come from Manila? 4-5 hours maybe?
restored communication in some stations with Bayantel Span. With this, the stations can coordinate w/ each other.
:okay:
renovated PNR Naga station
Will the renovated Naga Station be like the stations of the LRT/MRT here in Manila with shops? That's what I understood from the mall-type stations that was posted before.
Rationalization of PNR:
-reduce the manpower of PNR from 3,000+ to 234 positions
-The PNR hired 600+ casual employees (hire and fire personnel)
-PNR has now a total of less than 1K employees from the 3K
Good. Less expenses for the PNR. I just hope they give competitive salaries for those with loaded work.

SUBTERRANEAN. Newly discovered subterranean river of Mandiklom awaits exploration by tourist. A bat in flight on the upper left was captured bt the camera.

I think the first Gayon Bikol was held here in Naga when Mr. Beda Priela was still the Governor/Chairman of Metro Naga Chambers of Commerce. They were the ones who organized the event in Naga. I think Naga hosted the event for two year then it was held in Legazpi, then Intramuros and now Iriga.Ü
The first two years (or three years) of the Gayon Bikol Festival was held in Intramuros. The third and fourth year (or fourth and fifth) were held in Naga City coinciding with the Penafrancia Festivities. Then it was returned to Intramuros. I actually haven't heard that it was held in Legazpi.

This was featured in the very first Bicol Business Week. Landco had a booth in the said event. I even had a brochure of it kept in an unknown place in our Naga residence.:D
During the same exact year Landco unveiled their interest in Naga, SM did the same thing. There had been long deliberations on air, especially on RMN Naga, whether which establishment is better for Naga. Landco, I think, was afraid of SM for obvious reasons.
One, SM had established its name in the retail industry. Landco is just starting and only has three malls to date - Cabanatuan, Legazpi and Lucena.
Two, SM has a greater advantage, location-wise. SM is just in the city's CBD II, while PM will be at the Almeda Highway. The CBD II is already an established commercial area, while the Almeda Highway will just be developed by Landco.
Three, Landco, most likely has learned its lesson in Lucena. Lucena has both SM and Pacific Mall and AFAIK PM Lucena suffered huge losses in its first few years of operation. If Lucena experienced it, Naga wouldn't be so differently. Lucena is a mid-sized HUC while Naga is only a small-sized city.
Four, IMO, Naga cannot accommodate two big mall developers at the moment, though I do think Naga and its environs can now.
*sigh*
I wish Landco would just develop that area into a residential one. The area is very feasible for a huge subdivision. IMO, it's like the Avide Residences in PAcol.

aidz February 2nd, 2010, 01:03 PM tara! ano jamir game ka?
Dear all, this is the partial report from Mr. Priela's update last Januar 31, 2010.
4 Deliverables for the period
-complete the northrail/southrail linkage project phase 1
-open the bicol commuter service
-reopening of the manila bicol line
-implement rationalization of the PNR
As of now, 90% is completed. It was supposed to have been finished last year. The bridges in Travesia and San Cristobal are yet to be finished.
Completion of the Double tracking in Manila
PNR revenue has increased 1.37M, average earnings 3M
increased number of passengers
Bicol manila line
travesia, Guinobatan and san cristobal, Laguna bridges 30% complete
Target Completion date is before the end of GMA presidency.
replacement of wooden ties with concrete sleepers.
Libmanan-Sipocot
-as of now, LIbmanan and Sipocot wooden ties have been replaced with concrete ties.
average speed of the commuter train is 40Kph but with the newly replaced ties, it can run 50-70Kph
restored communication in some stations with Bayantel Span. With this, the stations can coordinate w/ each other.
repairs of two locomotives completed. (stranded after Milenyo)
renovated PNR Naga station
Revenues from fares from January 1-15 is 40K, It double from
January 16-30 with 80K
It means, there is an increase in ridership/passengers.
Rationalization of PNR:
-reduce the manpower of PNR from 3,000+ to 234 positions
-mitigated the bleeding of PNR.
-monthly payroll 28M to 18M
-outsourcing services (security, cleaning, maintenance, etc)
-The PNR hired 600+ casual employees (hire and fire personnel)
-PNR has now a total of less than 1K employees from the 3K
The employees who have been laid off have now been given their full benefits except with GSIS since it has problems...
second part:
asset management
Example: Manila Hotel sold by Ramos, sold by Prado...
properties That will be passed through are now sold. but there are plenty still left. Just from the right of way of PNR which is 15m from each side of the railway, where settlers stay for free free.
Should fees be charged, that's a great amount.
If the assets will be managed well, PNR may operate free from Govn't subsidy.
Assets that are repaired:
one of the assets in Tutuban, the Tutuban Station that was linked out to
Tutuban Properties Incorporated. The facade was maintained but the office is no longer there, it's now a mall. The PNR Head office is just behind it.
Clearing and resettlement of informal settlers in PNR's right of way.
In Manila, some 34,000 Informal settlers has been relocated. One Mr. Priela visited just behind the New Bilibid Prison. It's beautiful, complete amenities, complete house, streets, market, schools.
The settlers are given livelihood training for sustained source of income.
Collection of of PNR grew from 18M to 32M
out of this, subsidy of PNR from govn't is reduced.
The govn't subsidy of 35M insufficient just for salaries.
The PNR entered into joint venture with Eastern Telecom for the Installation of fiber optic cable which will allow PNR better communication and signaling. Tutuban to Calamba is the coverage of Eastern Telecom.
Computerization - important especially in Asset Management. Lease agreements/contracts that are too old will be turned into electronic copies for updates purposes.
short them strategic direction:
2010 implementation of NLSP 2 w/c will extend the improve rails from Alabang to Calamba. It will start June 2010.
Fencing of cleared areas to prevent returning of settlers. Clearing and maintaining of cleaned area is expensive.
communication facilities will be improved
As of now, BIcol commuter service is serving Sipocot and Ligao; the management want extend it to Tagkawayan and Legazpi once Travesia is finished. Travesia(damaged by Reming) is supposed to be finished by September.
Rehab and reopening of Manila Bicol Line maintaining by 2010. Hopefully, by the tercentenary celebration, a special train may be available for use.
Medium term dev't plan:
-full rehab of existing narrow gauge
- in other countries, narrow gauges are used as side tracks
-standard gauge for high speed trains
-Manila Legazpi Line is open for freights and local commuters
(dumating na si doc)
-upgrading and implementation of the south rail under a standard gauge. along/beside the standard gauge will be the narrow gauge which will allow the services of an express train.
requirements for standard gauge:
-enough space
-no level crossing(there will be elevations)
-tunneling if necessary
-minimal curvatures.
3 phases of implementation
Caloocan to Lucena,
Lucena to Legazpi,
Legazpi to Matnog, Sorsogon (eastern Nautical Highway)
Reopening PNR Calamba-Batangas Port line (Western Nautical Highway)
Public Private collaboration:
Calamba to Bicol
NCDI - Fiber Optic Facility
RICHSI (heritage conservation group) - Paco Station Railway Museum (return to PNR the station)
STBEST (spin off company of SM)- Proposing development of rail walks. Station Malls
Just like MRT station malls.
allow us to have proper crowd control.
Ticketing will be through (like MRT) unified ticketing system with MRT/LRT
MetroPacific would like to connect NLEX to the SLEX
Skyway connectors will be over PNR right of way.
negotiating with MPC. to have rail at the top as well.
continuing negotiation with the private sectors.
provision for the rail should also be on top not just below.
the moment commuter trains will run in higher intensity, we would like to put the commuter trains on top to lessen interruption in traffic. The long howl trains will run below.
long term goals
-PNR responsible for the southline
-north line is under north rail. Caloocan to Clark
plans to return to PNR the North Rail
Philippine Railroad system
-Bold lines
-dotted lines are proposed
beyond 2019
pictures of achievements
before and now
new corporate logo and color of PNR building
Naga Station pictures
clearing of informal settlers
old haven of drug addicts
further dev't of stations with proposed station malls.
looking into having unified ticketing system like MRT/LRT - Magnetic
fabrication of concrete ties is done in Naga
strict quality control
easier process of ongoing replacement
current service will be sent to Manila for further refurbishing.
refurbishing will be done by a service provider in Sta. Rosa Laguna of a local bus company for a cost of 5.3M.
if done abroad 25M
CR will be vacuum like the ones in airplanes
operation started Dec 26, 2009 w/o launching/announcement done...
51 informal settlers in PNR Naga will be relocated by end of March.
Travesia - September is completion
San Cristobal - May or June
ah! gulo pa! aayusin ko pa ito!
rhyzrockerz February 2nd, 2010, 01:04 PM Kevs pag andito ka na sa naga balik na lang tayo Brekkie...

kevinb February 2nd, 2010, 01:20 PM Wow,nice info! tnx tnx:) pero sna at least one of Landco's known for would utilize Naga's Developing land areas.
Hehehe. You're welcome. :)
Since Landco is more learned in real estate, I hope they do real estate business here in the city instead.
second part:
asset management
Example: Manila Hotel sold by Ramos, sold by Prado...
properties That will be passed through are now sold. but there are plenty still left. Just from the right of way of PNR which is 15m from each side of the railway, where settlers stay for free free.
Should fees be charged, that's a great amount.
Residents must not be allowed to stay inside the PNR right of way (ROW). It is not a residential area as it is dangerous.
The PNR entered into joint venture with Eastern Telecom for the Installation of fiber optic cable which will allow PNR better communication and signaling. Tutuban to Calamba is the coverage of Eastern Telecom.
And the Calamba to Sorsogon line will be served by BayanTel right?
RICHSI (heritage conservation group) - Paco Station Railway Museum (return to PNR the station)
I love tht building. It's vey beautiful. There used to be a proposal to convert it into a mall. Good thing the idea was scrapped.:okay:
STBEST (spin off company of SM)- Proposing development of rail walks. Station Malls
I don't understand how STBEST would be aa spin-off company of SM.:dunno:
Naga Station pictures
Where are the photos Aidz?:D:D:D
CR will be vacuum like the ones in airplanes
Any idea why they had to do that? There's not much pressure in trains as compared to planes..

properties That will be passed through are now sold. but there are plenty still left.

I see ok this is just a suggestion. The Secretary should be taking down Minutes of the Meetings first indicating the Date , Time, Place , and all those people present during the meeting followed by Highlights of the meeting. The last portion should be Action needed to be taken up for the NEXT meeting.
For Notes from invited speakers/ guests maybe we can request a copy/ summary of their reports (soft copies or printouts ) beforehand then we can just summarize here for the sake of all ssc members/ forumers.
Maybe 2 people can do these. :)

Naga Boy February 2nd, 2010, 02:01 PM It is such a joy to see CamSur being on top of tourism list.
It took LRay’s genius that plucked the province from being unheard in the early 90’s to a very popular tourist spot that is today.
It was declared as the second (next to Cebu) most visited province by tourists in the PI year 2009 by the DOT.
People Asia chose it as the most preferred Tourist Destination in the Philippines on its latest issue.
This time again together with Donsol, Sorsogon it was again chosen as the top 10 Travel Destinations in the Philippines by the prestigious Travel Plus Magazine.
Wouldn’t it be nice to see Albay (with all its potential to become as the next tourist haven) joining the list and see three provinces in Bicol on the top of the heap?

sonofignatius February 2nd, 2010, 05:32 PM yan man naisip ko. dapat may bantay ta kuruanon sana yan kan workers. hehe
nahiling ko na an blueprint kan miting kan sumaro bikolnon last november. may mga noted people na itatàpil sa pwerta, like robles, barlin etc.
i hope francisco gainza is included among the featured figures. this good bishop was a visionary. as bishop of the see of caceres which at that time included the whole bikol region and parts of quezon province, he initiated many good things, among them the colegio de sta isabel and the written account of the penafrancia devotion.
re: oragon's question why the structure is right at the end of barlin street where the cathedral compound begins. i haven't heard any official statement on this but imo, the arch's location (as it stands where the cathedral walls begin) gives a fitting and felt welcome to the entire church complex. as one comes from the centro and walks or drives up from barlin, s/he is given a "massive reminder" that s/he is entering sacred space. or that s/he is entering an episode of our history (given that this site begins the whole complex of Spanish-era institutions in the city).
yes! there were two with him and one is a registered member with a username he's so embarrassed to use... that guy what a college classmate... the other one was from Manila I think...
the ssc-registered jesuit was a former student of mine at the ateneo de naga high school (class '01; college '05). the other fellow (hopefully, a forumer soon) is from paranaque, a brunei-based architect before he joined the jesuits. the priesthood never entered his mind in college as he was busy with pursuits young people usually have. it was only in largely islamic brunei that he rediscovered his faith and the deeper calling to build not structures of stone but hearts and souls of men and women. :)
I visited your public profile and you really are a priest, sir? And you say masses so it means you are.
Oh I see!
Thank you.
yes dustin i am. :) for a living and for life i fish and i break bread and i shepherd.
glad to know you once thought of the vocation. well you can also be a good father and husband and that's an equally good calling and way of serving, and you can contribute good children to the world- and raise a good son who might answer the call you once considered.

fil07 February 3rd, 2010, 12:06 AM It is such a joy to see CamSur being on top of tourism list. It took LRay’s genius plucked the province from being unheard in the early 90’s to a very popular tourist spot that is today.

Naga universities are on top in this field.. I'm amazed with ADNU's performance. Nursing is a newly-offered course but they're in the second spot... But I'm more amazed on Naga College Foundation's, this school accepts everyone. Their students are not screened so whether bright or "dumb" is accepted but look at their performance, still belongs in the top 5 in Bicol.

The performance record of these nursing schools is nothing to crow about. Judging from the total number of successful examinees (37, 527 out of 94,462) which is 39.72% only the above schools get a passing grade:
I am happy to see that some of the top-performing schools in Bicol have relatively new nursing program. Congratulations to the new nurses!!!!:banana::banana:
Even my alma mater, University of Northeastern Philippines (Iriga) with a dismal 22.34% passing is disappointing, to say the least!. I remember when it used to be in the mid 90s and even 100%::(

bagay man baga duman sa 100 Visionary, palitan mo si Gov. sa cover.heheehe
Aguirangan is in Maangas, Presentacion. It is a small island. (pwede mong malibot sya for only 30-45mins) Atulayan and Aguirangan Islands can be a substitute to Caramoan for a limited budget backpackers. It is more nearer to Sabang Port and much cheaper.Ü
But of course Caramoan is still more beautiful compared to this two islands.Ü

When I visit the Gawad Kalinga Office in Sierra Madre st. I usually eat in the carenderia corner Mayon and Sierra Madre st, if dinuguan and panict bato are available that's my order partner with baduya or puto.Ü

hakz2007 February 3rd, 2010, 02:53 AM UNEP Joins 10TH Regional Tertiary Press Conference (http://voxbikol.com/bikolnews/4022/unep-joins-10th-regional-tertiary-press-conference)
Eight students from the University of Northeastern Philippines (UNEP) joined more than a hundred delegates from 21 schools and universities in the recently concluded 10th Regional Tertiary Schools Press Conference, held at Villa Mila Garden Resort, Daet, Camarines Norte.
The occasion was spearheaded by the Bicol Association of Tertiary Press Advisers, Bicol Association of Student Campus Writers and Commission on Higher Education and was sponsored by the Bicol Association of Tertiary Press Advisers. Mabini Colleges was this year's host school for the said event.
The writing exercises highlighted the participants' unique talents and enhanced the artistic facets of their journalism skills. Writing events included news writing and competition in various categories: Sports, Editorial, Opinion, Feature, Poetry, Copy reading and Headline Writing, Photo journalism, Comics strip, literary graphics and editorial cartooning. This year's theme is: Campus journalism, Invigorating the essence of a genuine democracy."
For this year's conference, the organizer invited Professor Juan Romero Nereus Olaivar Acosta, popularly known as Neric Acosta as the keynote speaker. Acosta is a well-known politician, particularly in the province of Bukidnon where he was elected as First District Representative. He is also an academian and a political scientist in the Philippines.
He was not only looked up as a public servant but also as a great mentor for his great teaching style, which according to his students, is provoking and facilitative. He is also an academic consultant in Xavier University, University of the Philippines and the Bukidnon State College from 1992 to 1998.
Acosta's talk was one of the moving forces that inspired JAYPEE Sayson, ANA Mariz Zamora and JEZIEL JUNE Belorio to be included in the list of lucky delegates who will represent UNEP in the upcoming 9th Luzonwide Higher Education Press Conference in February 8-10, 2010 at Consuelo Hotel, Lingayen, Pangasinan.
Other participants from UNEP were Sheena Mariz Hinlo, Angelica Praxides , Jonald Polvorosa, Dick Alien Bernas and Jules Mairo Concepcion. Their ever supportive adviser, Dr. REGINA A. Gonzales was also with the team. Dr. Gonzales is also the moderator of FRONTLINE, the official student publication of the University of Northeastern Philippines .
UNEP President Atty. Remelisa Alfelor-Moraleda congratulated the team for the job well done "It was a good start for the year, and a good boost for our students to enhance their craft and strive for more. This is one way of proving that UNEP is really determined to live up to the legacy of academic excellence."
Periodic competitions, such as press conferences is being supported by the Campus Journalism Act of 1991. Section 8 of Republic Act 7079 states that "the Department of Education, Culture and Sports shall sponsor periodic competitions, press conferences, and training seminars in which student-editors/ writers and teacher-adviser of student publications in the elementary, secondary and tertiary levels shall participate."
This is also in line with the declared policy of the state to "uphold and protect the freedom of the press, even at the campus level and to promote the development and growth of campus journalism as a means of strengthening ethical values, encouraging critical and creative thinking and developing moral character and personal discipline of the Filipino youth." (Lizel Macatangay)

As far as I know, UNC is the oldest nursing school in the Bicol Region and Sta. Isabel is the second. Their nursing schools were founded in the early sixities. Aquinas University's nursing school was founded in 1967. It should be the third oldest. I'm amazed at the performance of Ateneo's nursing school which is a relative newcomer in the field. Divine Word College's nursing school is also quite new, so this should be their first batch of examinees.
