This structure (more esthetic than practical inspired) nothing more than packaging. BUT it is really spectacular, sexy en nice construction intellect. But we see it in the structures of the Bejing 2008 stadium end Toyo Ito architecture...

Toyo Ito's Serpentine Pavelioen.

The full name is Mode Gakuen Cocoon Tower with 203 or 204 meters and 50 floors. This will be a vocational school for up to 10.000 students (source here (http://www.google.com/search?q=cache:9gt2Ly_vrNcJ:www.shimz.co.jp/english/financial/pdf/ar_2007_p14-22.pdf+%22cocoon+tower%22+tokyo&hl=de&ct=clnk&cd=10&gl=de)).

Here's the rendering from tokyo-construction.com (http://tokyo-construction.com/?p=23):
http://www.tokyo-construction.com/images/cocoon.jpg

By the way, there's another thread for this building under the name Mode Cocoon Gakuen Tower (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=518898). That name sequence sounds odd and the thread starter has been banned later on (I bet not due to his writing about Cocoon Tower). After all, there's no chance to reply there anymore, so we should go on posting here...

Interesting: the cladding is fixed immediately after the rise of the steel, so one could think that the building has already topped out. To me, this is the greatest design for a highrise in Tokyo so far, by the way! :okay:

I don't know, I don't really like the design at all. These sorts of towers are going to be seen more frequently I think. They should have only made ONE shaped like a cocoon.

No different from the other towers that look like this.

I´m sorry I´m from El Salvador and my natural language is spanish, but I guess you can understand me.
The buildings in japan are simply impresive, and this tower is fantastic, there are to many building I like in Japan but for me the best is Tokyo City Hall, from Kenzo Tange, Does anybody knows somthing about this arquitec?

Fantastic building. But I really have to agree with a lot of the people here...it's too small. The majority of the skyscrapers in that cluster are in the 210-230m range and are also quite massive. This is the only real 'landmark' design skyscraper and it will be one of the smallest.

If they would have added 50-100m it would done wonders to the skyline.

It seems to me that, finally, Japan is willing to embrace the contemporary architecture in its most vigourous expression into skyscrapers projects.

Finally something avant garde in contrast with the all too common box architecture of the 70's which graces the city skyline.

This is my favourite highrise design. The shape, the vertical stripes, the huge windows, the detailing -- the overall quality of this tower is just stunning. The tapered design makes it curve inwards towards a a sharp roof eliminating any sense of this tower being stubby. Quite honestly, this would look great in any city.

I found this thread while looking for some pictures of this building under construction, and thought I'd post some of my info as well.

I had the opportunity to tour the building recently and thought some people might like a few interior photos.

I'd also like to share a few random bits of information. First of all, the white lines you see on the outside are not actually the structural steel. They are fascia that has been placed over the joints in the glass, and the steel is under that. Some of them are also just stickers on the windows.

As for how 10,000 students will be transported when the bell rings, I imagine it could be a bit of a mess. There is a tremendous amount of space devoted to movement on each floor, but not so much between floors and it's all concentrated in the center of the building. There are two narrow stairwells right next to each other in the very center, and they are surrounded by eight elevators. Four of the public elevators run the entire height of the building, the other four do not. The elevators only stop on every third floor, and the interim floors are connected by staircases located in three-story atria that are stacked along one side of the building. There may also have been two service elevators in the core, but I'm not entirely sure. The floor plans are a bit confusing.

Because only the two narrow center stairways run all the way to the ground, I suspect there could be problems with an evacuation in an emergency.

As far as the interior, other than the nice windows it's really quite plain. The floors and walls are the standard vinyl and wallpaper that you see in just about every Japanese building, and the ceilings mostly quite low with a mix of acoustic tile or are left unfinished or covered with wire grating. The floor plans are quite inefficient and seem rather poorly executed. Overall I would say the interior is a real disappointment compared to the exterior.

Interior of the window. The spots are stickers that are meant to look like the white crosspieces from a distance. The blinds can be opened and closed by servos from the building control room.

One of the two auditoriums located inside the sphere at the foot of the building. The picture does no justice to how poorly done this room is. The ceiling, in particular, is terrible.

All the complaints aside, it is a nice looking building and I think it's a pleasant addition to the Shinjuku skyline.

I just wanna bump this thread by saying that the Mode Gakuen Cocoon Tower may possibly win the 2008 Emporis Skyscraper Award. So if the tower really wins the award in Spring, I won't have to listen to any more complaints about this building, although it is an unusual building for the Tokyo skyline. I would have built a structure like that in China or possibly the Republic of Korea.

UnoriginalNick, thanks for the great interior photos!

It sounds like some compromises had to made in order to incorporate such a daring design. However, I wonder if those images show a fully completed building? Surely there should be something covering the exposed cement for the ceiling of the auditoriums?

Here's a picture of this building from Bloody Monday (http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Bloody_Monday) drama.

One of the strangest of tower designs I've seen in a while... not quite sure if I like it or not. Maybe half and half?
