View Full Version : Marriott Beirut closed!
Lebanese Cedar September 10th, 2007, 07:00 AM Unfortunately, it appears the Marriott Beirut has closed down.
Lebanon is no longer listed as a destination on Marriott's website.
The Marriott Beirut was one of the first (if not the first) newly constructed full service hotels to open after the civil war ended.
It was an interesting atrium hotel with a shopping mall integrated with it.
Marriott is arguably one of the most internationally recognized and important hotel brands. It's a shame Lebanon no longer has a Marriott...
I was hoping Beirut at some point would get a JW Marriott, but that was when the future was looking very bright...
It's a reflection of the situation in Lebanon sadly...
LeB.Fr September 10th, 2007, 03:07 PM ^^ yea ,i know it has closed up on 18 july 2007. This hotel opened in april 1996 and i don't know why it closed up. Anyway, i hope they don't demolish it.
Beiruti September 11th, 2007, 01:51 AM Maybe it closed because it is located in a Hizballah stronghold neighborhood...what a shame that this cancer is destroying our country. We need the Marriott to relocate to Ras Beirut...

You must be confusing it with another hotel.
The Marriott was in Jnah which is a Sunni neighborhood that is very loyal to Hariri and is extremely anti-Hizbullah.
Perhaps you are confusing it with the Sheraton Coral Beach which is next to the Ouzai which is a Hizbullah neighborhood.
Jayme September 11th, 2007, 08:33 AM I think Beirut! was thinking of the Sharinton

Jnah is rather a mixed area, I might not support Hezbollah, not because the are Shiaa, rather due to the fact that they are a fundamentalist religious group like I don't support Sunni religious extremists; However, I don't wish segregation between Lebanese people.

Are you sure? Because the Marriott I am thinking about is just feet away from the Ouzai (along the main road approaching the highway near the airport). Last time I was there I saw Hizballah flags draped over the fountain in front of the hotel....from what I heard this neighborhood is predominately Shia (at least now).
Oh, and the Sheraton Coral Beach is right down the street from the Marriott.
You can see the hotel here:

so it is in South Beirut ....wikimapia is a very good tool
Hassoun September 11th, 2007, 05:34 PM So,it's now Beirut Galeria ??
Beiruti September 12th, 2007, 01:02 AM So it is still a functioning hotel open for business?
sargon September 22nd, 2007, 07:38 PM Marriott will be back soon but with different Lebanese partner
Jayme September 23rd, 2007, 12:31 AM ^^ how do you know
sargon September 28th, 2007, 06:09 PM ^^ how do you know
My cousin that works for Marriott International. There was a dispute with the previous partners
Nadini September 29th, 2007, 03:21 AM ^^ so the hotel is temporarily closed?
rezam December 14th, 2007, 12:07 AM it was a lousy hotel, gloomy interior and exterior. the service was bad, the location was bad, the whole hotel development was not well done. the room interiors were 1980's style, the fnb outlets average. a marriot deserves to look like a 5 star, that marriot looked like a 3 star...there will be another marriot in beirut inchallah, but definitly not that location...
Beiruti December 14th, 2007, 04:12 AM ^^ I agree somewhat, but the location has potential and this hotel does have a nice rooftop pool/terrace as well as a small shopping mall and movie theater!
sargon December 15th, 2007, 03:45 PM Anyway, the Ritz Carlton which is a subsidiary of Marriott International is going to open in Beirut which tells you that it's not the company loosing interest but as I mentioned above
Halawala December 15th, 2007, 04:22 PM Personally, Im a devoute Marriott fan, and I do wish they would come back to this country again! The Ritz is opening, well thats a good sign as Sargon stated. But the Ritz is usually over the Marriott budget.
Beiruti June 22nd, 2008, 02:34 PM I recently drove by what was once the Marriot Beirut (in Bir Hassan neighborhood of Beirut) and the company logo has been removed from the building and all signs. The building is currently unused and there are no renovation works going on. What was once well-maintained landscaping surrounding the building now looks like a mess with trees growing wildly and grass yellow... I am confident that once the new company takes over it will look great again but currently there is no sign to indicate what it will be yet.
Abu 3Leish September 6th, 2008, 02:47 PM the marriot is now officially The Galleria Hotel ...pffft
Hassoun September 7th, 2008, 01:51 AM ^^ What's that??? 5 stars hotel ?????
Abu 3Leish September 7th, 2008, 03:00 PM ^^i don't know but they put up the signs on the roof and on the entrance i think its 4 stars
