Well, they do have an opening on the red sea actually. But biodiversity stands for the range of animal and plant life within a region.

I think Hassoon's mention about a picture of Turkey was originally of Lebanon! is that picture of the Cedar! I thought it was Lebanon too! unless Turkey has Cedars as well!...

Ceders are widely found besides Lebanon, in western Syria, the mediterranean region (especially on the Taurus mountains) of Turkey, Cyprus and the Atlas mountain range in N.Africa.

Some cedars in Turkey are for example hundreds of years old, and there are whole cedar forests on the mountain ranges of southern Turkey.

PS: @Redalinho; thank you for the great pictures, it really shows how diverse the mediterranean region is and not all about deserts and shrubs and scorched landscapes (although the pictures of those as well are quite beautiful)

PPS: cedar in Turkish is called sedir, and there are some even here in Ankara, beautiful trees.

I don't know that much about it, I'm afraid, but there are other thermal springs which are rumoured to do that. For example there is a spring where little fish live, these fish eat away fungus and such nasty stuff which may accumulate on the skin.

ICHKEUL LAKE - NORTH OF TUNISIA


The Ichkeul lake and wetland are a major stopover point for hundreds of thousands of migrating birds, such as ducks, geese, storks and pink flamingoes, who come to feed and nest there. Ichkeul is the last remaining lake in a chain that once extended across North Africa.

TUNISIA- CHAMBI PARK -KHOUMIRIE -NORTH EAST

The national park of Chambi is representative of the whole of the physical conditions of the Tunisian Atlas and belongs to the High plateaus of the Center of Tunisia Le Djebel Chambi at an altitude of 1544m

The gazelle of mountain, the moufflon with cuffs, the hyena striped, the wild boar and the wildcat . Chambi is also rich in birds and much of migratory birds rest there in spring and in autumn and others reproduce there in more important During summer the partridge gamba,the pigeon biset, the turtle-dove of wood,the finch of the trees, the guêpiers of Europe, the cross nozzle of the pines and the eagle Circaète Jean the White .

EL FEIJDA-TUNISIA

The site is situated in the extreme north-west of Tunisia, 49 km north-west of Jendouba and 17 km north-west of Ghardimaou. El Feidja National Park represents the best-preserved area of mountainous Mediterranean sclerophyllous forest in the Khroumirie. The vegetation is dominated by oak forests of Quercus suber and Q. canariensis and Mediterranean maquis shrubland, with Cistus monspeliensis, Erica arborea, Myrtus communis and Arbutus unedo. The flora is very rich; more than 700 plant species have been recorded. There are several springs and watercourses in the park. Annual rainfall varies between 1,200 mm and 2,000 mm and snow is recorded almost annually.

The Ramsar convention uses a broad definition of the types of wetlands covered in its mission,
