SimonTheSoundMan September 13th, 2007, 02:20 AM Oh damn, 5 came out as 8. Mods!
Mancunian Monkey September 13th, 2007, 03:18 AM Hmm, I'm not sure to be honest. Even though it's called VTP200, it's a bit of a cop-out considering that huge spire on the top looks like it adds about 80m. The actual observation point is at 117m high. So surely wouldn't your V-Tower have a higher observation point or top floor than this?
However, I think the base looks very cool. I'm not entirely sure about the scaffolding up the side of the tower - but nonetheless, it should make a good impact on the Brum skyline.
I'll give it a 7.
EDIT: OK, I've now read that part of it rotates to upto 190m high, so actually that's very impressive
Spatula September 13th, 2007, 03:27 AM According to the website that thing halfway up the spire is a viewing platform which slowly raises up to the very top of the spire.
Mancunian Monkey September 13th, 2007, 03:40 AM Some of those rides would scare me to death - especially that see-saw one! I think I'd just stick to the observation gyro thingy!
Biosonic September 13th, 2007, 10:10 AM And you can climb to the top and have your photo taken  :puke:
Biosonic September 13th, 2007, 10:11 AM I've given it 9 - it could be more architecturally pleasing, and 50m taller, but I think it is stunning, will do amazingly well in terms of tourism, and look great on the skyline :cucumber:
U475 Foxtrot September 13th, 2007, 01:01 PM Innovative and exciting but not exactly elegant. Looks like something from thunderbirds
Brummyboy92 September 13th, 2007, 01:01 PM I gave it a ten, its fantastic. And when its built I am going on all them attractions. Im in to that type of stuff.
Wild@Heart September 13th, 2007, 01:02 PM http://inthemac.com/simon/images/vtp200.png
Looks like an advert for SimCity.
Chogmook September 13th, 2007, 01:15 PM It's erm, strange, but different i guess, worth a try though! 7 from me!
You need to give it a nickname!
It's like the smaller version of Seattle's Space Needle, with Liverpool's Radio City Tower, with an adustable beacon thrown on top!
Telfordboy September 13th, 2007, 01:24 PM It's like the smaller version of Seattle's Space Needle
Except its taller than the Space Needle :D
Flogging Molly September 13th, 2007, 02:00 PM Watching the video in big screen with clear imaging my oppinion is ... Its just out of this world. The design was never going to be shard like. Its a theme park with a twist. Its beautiful and will become an icon.
Fucking love it.
Sonny97 September 13th, 2007, 02:24 PM I gave it an "8". It's certainly a radical design, and will give the City a huge boost in terms of tourism & entertainment. But somehow the design looks a little bit "stumpy" to my eyes, like an oil rig beached on dry land.
Perhaps if the render had the obs tower somewhere near the top of the spire it would have possibly made it look more slender.
But overall, Im in favour
Flogging Molly September 13th, 2007, 03:11 PM Again stumpy? the top viewing platform is taller then HCT. its thinner then HCT. The spire make it look stumpy but its far from it. It has a 78m pole coming out of its head. A pole just shorter then the Rotunda and no wider then 5m in diameter.
Its perfectly proportionate.
Biosonic September 13th, 2007, 03:44 PM I can see what he means, but if the viewing platform were higher the support would have to be chunkier, and it may appear top-heavy.
Maybe they could thicken the mast above to make it balance out more?
Flogging Molly September 13th, 2007, 03:53 PM But if they thickened the mast it would take longer for the gryo to rotate meaning it would have to go quicker and people would rush and lose specific views. RTKL would've done alot of work with this. They've been involved in some pretty major projects and know what they are doing. Its going to look very special and many will be in awe including Londoners.
Telfordboy September 13th, 2007, 05:01 PM After seeing this picture
http://www.vtp200.com/images/views/city_aerial_2007_09_05_low-res.jpg
I love it. The spire goes right through and all the rest is hung from it (sort of) I love it, 9.

Bound to be dubbed 'The Tripod' if it gets built
Biosonic September 13th, 2007, 05:32 PM s'cool by me :)
Medo September 14th, 2007, 08:47 PM It's interesting I guess. At first I didn't like it much, it reminded me of an industrial building, like a futuristic oil rig or one of those rocket launching platforms. But I've grow to like it a bit. 7/10.
paulmat September 14th, 2007, 09:20 PM Hmm. It definitely looks fun, but I still think it's too stumpy (yes Sim, I know it IS tall, but it doesn't LOOK it) and the 'spire' doesn't really look great. The base looks great though, and all in all i'd give it an 8.
blahblah September 15th, 2007, 11:42 AM Fuckin' love it. Going to give the entire eastside part of the city a massive boost and bring tourists from all over the country. If not further.
10/10 for me, love the design, love the impact this will have on the city. Love it. Love it. Love it!
BABYCAKES September 15th, 2007, 02:39 PM Very impressive indeed. I watched the video and my palm went sweaty just thinking about some of those rides...
Innovative, a one off, fabulous. Great for Birmingham.
Elizabeth Kinoke September 15th, 2007, 07:08 PM looks like you can climb 190 metres to a tiny open air viewing level and then climb a furtjet 10 metres to the full 200 metre summit... notice the bungee target pad bottom left... no thank you :)

El_Greco September 15th, 2007, 07:49 PM 9/10
SleepyOne September 16th, 2007, 03:04 AM tacky, tacky, tacky, tacky, tacky.
Stick it next to Starcity and it might be ok. This is not the right project for Eastside. :ohno:
oscar9 September 16th, 2007, 10:08 AM Futuristic looking but ugly as well.Just a 112 m structure with a 88m pole stuck on top?I suppose for a theme park it pretty functional.
Its AlL gUUd September 16th, 2007, 04:08 PM not very elegant and very awkward looking but loving how the Brum forumers are giving it a 10
Its growing on me :)
Erebus555 September 16th, 2007, 04:21 PM Wiggley's a Brummie?!
Its AlL gUUd September 16th, 2007, 04:29 PM Wiggley's a Brummie?!
who said that?:sly:

You said the Brummies are voting 10 - and wiggley voted 10! Do you know something we don't? ;)
Bachy Soletanche September 16th, 2007, 05:06 PM I'm still waiting for Acctura's <sp> vote.
Elizabeth Kinoke September 16th, 2007, 07:14 PM It is what has been missing in Birmingham for many years... something to do for free on a Sunday afternoon/evening or just to look out over the city and ponder about life. There are two points to this tower.
1. I absolutely refuse to admit that anyone could seriously not find the prospect of these rides and view points high above the city as either incredibly exciting or frightening (if you're scared of heights) - I would love this aspect no matter where the tower was and I'd certainly make a bee-line for it as a visitor. Me and friends went up the Birmingham wheel before a night out and it was ace so this should be just awesome.
2. Architectural merit - personally I think the tower looks interesting and quite futuristic in an industrial way, some may not like that but you have to admit it is in a once industrial part of the city, if it had been like the other designs then people would have said... looks too much like something else, this is unique in it's appearance, the fact that people have already likened it to the Smash robot, a giant golfer, war of the worlds creature and rocket launch station is great, this means it is already capturing peoples imagination, now imagine standing at the base and looking up 200 metres to the top and knowing that if you have the bottle you can reach that top point and have a picture taken against the skyline.
I really do thin kit's great and by the sounds of things, these guys want this to be the first of many, so other cities could end up with something similar and who knows.. maybe taller.

Brummyboy92 September 16th, 2007, 08:32 PM O that tower drop ride, the top level you stand up and the bottem level you sit down. I hate them rides so much they turn my stomach so bad.
Biosonic September 17th, 2007, 09:35 AM http://www.skyscrapernews.com/images/pics/5341VTP200_pic6.jpg
Get this: those pods spinning round that outside are joystick controlled and you can make theme swing out or stay in AND rotate them 360 degrees  :puke:
Elizabeth Kinoke September 17th, 2007, 11:59 AM I wonder if they have ejector seats as well... attached to a bungee rope... ;)
mk61 September 17th, 2007, 11:59 AM Get this: those pods spinning round that outside are joystick controlled and you can make theme swing out or stay in AND rotate them 360 degrees  :puke:
Quite possibly the greatest post ever.
Elizabeth Kinoke September 19th, 2007, 04:31 PM It will be about £13.50 to enter the tower which will include a couple of ridea as well. The very top bit is a physical climb to the FULL 200 metres. It will open till about 9pm in the winter and the rotating flight simulators will be joystick controlled with 360 degrees nav... fingers crossed for this, th emodels looked ace.

macc October 8th, 2007, 12:03 AM I like the base, it'd be a good addition to any city. The rest of it is cringworthy though. The shafts that take the lifts to the viewing plaform are bulky, unattractive and dated. Admittedly the platform itself is looks quite nice for a theme park but do you really want your most prominent landmark to be a theme park? Its not exactly the hieght of cool and sophistication. Is that the image you want to draw international business to the city? Blackpool of the midlands (blackpool tower looks far better)?
The theme park idea just sounds utterly impractical and I'd be amazed if its financially viable. Even if it was the entire viewing platform will just be one maze of queues. And the top floor of the viewing pluatform is a coffee shop? A coffee shop? Do you wonder why the top floors of towers in cities around the world tend not to be coffee shops? Even the logistics of letting people climb to the pinacle seem impossible.
You should demand better. The theme park will not work and this will be your Millenium dome.
Bachy Soletanche October 8th, 2007, 12:13 AM The difference is, this will be built by a private companies money.
Stefan88 October 8th, 2007, 02:47 AM It'll be like that tower in Las Vegas but a smaller version. It'd be interesting to see how well it does as tourist attraction if it's built.
Dan B October 8th, 2007, 05:49 AM I personally like it. Very space-age futurism. I kind of wish the lift shafts were curved though, despite the problems this would naturally cause the lifts, but I'm sure it could still be incorporated. If good high quality materials are used this project could be a great addition to the city. I do however find macc's critique of it quite relevant though. It may work in the architecturally for me, but does it make business sense?
8/10
Flogging Molly October 8th, 2007, 11:00 AM Makes perfect buisness sense. Birmingham has'nt got the sites to warrant just a observation tower, but an abservation tower with rides? Works wonderfully and within the new park even better.
And its not a coffee shop Macc - making things up now.
potto October 8th, 2007, 04:29 PM Im likeing the visuals, havent really thought much about the use of the building and the area it is set aside for, but will leave that up to the local inhabitants to argue out. Visually it looks exciting. There is concern about the elegence with the 3 pole approach but it looks like functional hi tec in the mould of Lloyds with a fuck off attidue and a nice twist at the end of it all.
watz January 14th, 2008, 09:06 AM Ugly.
jayo February 13th, 2008, 12:34 PM It ruin Birmingham's skyline-It looks more like a toy than a building.I gave it 1/10
mk61 February 13th, 2008, 12:38 PM You've voted on the old design - check v2.
nezzybaby February 13th, 2008, 01:11 PM ^can you please post a pic of V2 then, the pics in this thread are all of the same design which is the ugly one, let us see the non ugly one.
Erebus555 February 13th, 2008, 01:56 PM It has it's own thread: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=561608
henry hill August 7th, 2008, 06:01 PM I don't like such a style. Matter of the taste.
4/10
