View Full Version : Should the Premier league have terraced areas in their stadiums?
Kobo September 14th, 2007, 07:21 PM I hadn't seen a thread about this so appologies if its happened in the past.
There has been a lot written and spoken in the media recently about putting back terraces into football grounds in the Premiership and Championship. What are your views on this. Do you think there would be another stadium disaster, would it allow grounds to become more lively, would it lower the cost to watch a match, or is just a waste of money replacing all those seats? Please say your views.

leonardhenry September 14th, 2007, 07:32 PM Definitely. If the Germans can do it, why can't we?
It's all about choice, people should be allowed the choice
With the draconian sentences imposed on misbehaving football fans and the use of CCTV inside stadiums, security is no more an issue than it is now
As for safety, well if the Germans deem it safe then it's certainly worth looking at
Scarecrow September 14th, 2007, 07:33 PM I think they should at least trial it at some clubs that are willing. It wasn't terraces that killed people at Hillsborough. It was dangerous crowd control fencing and shite policing.
StiffUpper September 14th, 2007, 10:23 PM Absolutely. I can't wait until these are re-introduced.
Common sense and some determined individuals makes me optimistic (maybe wishful thinking I know).
As i see it, if you have designated standing areas everyone wins.
Those of us who prefer to stand get to do so, have fun and keep warm.
Those who prefer to sit don't get people standing in front of them blocking their view.

IHaveNoLegs September 15th, 2007, 02:26 AM i want to get rid of the law which says that grounds have to be all-seaters
of you've read the taylor report, the arguments against standing room are a bit out-dated and more to do with old stadiums than standing room
i think that the kop at the new anfield should be standing room
i would like each stadium to have a section of standing room (about 1/4 of capacity, maybe not even that much) for those 'dedicated' supporters
spud September 16th, 2007, 12:53 PM bring back standing areas.......
1LONDONER September 16th, 2007, 12:58 PM Yes.
Its a joke that we still have these ridiculous laws set by the FLA, absolutely nothing wrong with controlled terraces.
Republica September 16th, 2007, 05:27 PM They need to reintroduce safe terracing and also introduce the sale of alcohol inside the stadium terraces themselves. Both of these things can be controlled properly and would also lower the stupid ticket prices we have.
Better atmosphere too.
AndrewC September 16th, 2007, 06:34 PM I know its not quite the same but most people stand throughout matches anyway - so its not as if standing up is dangerous! Like Bunnyman says, terraces didn't kill people at Hillsborough, poor crowd control did.
Philip Cronin September 17th, 2007, 08:29 PM Definitely not. They should keep trying towards a more family friendly, mixed gender and middle class audience. Obscene chanting is not "atmosphere" it is just uncouth.
L8Hatter September 17th, 2007, 09:36 PM Fair play to the MP's involved if they pull this off. It's a cross-party thing I think, so it's not like there's much political capital in it. Politicians in doing the right thing for the right reasons shocker!
KiwiBrit September 17th, 2007, 11:10 PM Definitely not. They should keep trying towards a more family friendly, mixed gender and middle class audience. Obscene chanting is not "atmosphere" it is just uncouth.
That has to be one of the daftest posts I've read in a long time...middle class 'audience'. An audience is what you get at a polo match or at an opera, may be even a tory party conference, but certainly not at a proper football game.
The only atmosphere you will get is them munching on their prawn sarnies or the sound of them taking their seats 10 minutes after the second half has kicked off!
Get real, I know it may shock you but I've actually heard middle class people swear from time to time, just like the commoners! You must be the only person posting on here who actually likes having these corporate wallies at the games. :ohno:
jrb September 18th, 2007, 12:31 AM Citeh have introduced a singing section this season. Block 111. Sounded great on Sunday. Since we moved to COMS from Maine Road the atmosphere at the new stadium has been s***. The first 3 seasons were dreadful. No team, no Atmosphere, price hikes and stewards with the help of GMP pulling fans out left, right and centre for standing.(MCC health and safety officer advice) Thankfully fans can now stand throughout the game in certain blocks and sing without fear of being ejected.
Thankfully the club is now working with the fans to create a better atmosphere. Unfortunately because of the appalling last three seasons thousands of fans have jacked it in and don't seem to be coming back. 38,000 on Sunday. (The hardcore will always be there though) :)

football crowds are and should be 'uncooth'. The cooths can fuck off to rugger or something.
Us uncooths need an outlet.
Standing is a safety issue but so is large numbers of people in small enclosed areas regardless of seating or terracing. Seating is for control more than safety and the over riding factor is £££££££.
Liverpool had a pop at enforcing sitting in The Kop against Derby - very aggressive and provactive tactics were used. Why? Because the non Liverpudlian cooths were sold seats at the rear of the stand behind sections allocated to uber uncooths. The cooths complained. If that happens again there'll be cracked skulls.

Smash 'em, Toad. Bring back the terraces!
*England* September 19th, 2007, 02:23 PM i think the prem should stay all seater and let the lower divisions have terraces, i dont think the prem needs terraces back, theres a lot of security now and terraces would make it harder for the hundreds of cameras on the fans to pick things up that could be a risk, when everyone is seated it is a lot easier to police.
JamesWales September 19th, 2007, 02:29 PM Absolutely, definately, undoubtedly, yes we must have the terraces back. However you look at it, football is a culture as well as a business or leisure industry, and the terraces are an enormous part of our culture that was imposed on us from on high. Anyone who thinks the physical act of standing up caused Hillsborough needs their heads examined. It's perfectly safe.
Chrisyd September 19th, 2007, 03:02 PM If you look at the four major footballing disaster based on terracing (Valley Parade was wooden stands on fire).
i.e. Burnden Park, Ibrox x2 and Hillsborough, these all occurred on terraces that the only entrances/exits were at the rear of the stand.
If you get chance to read in more detail about the Burnden Park disaster in 1946 and Hillsborugh in 1989, some of the similarities are scary.

What happens when teams are promoted/relegated?

What about the deaths in Moscow, Ukraine, the US and South Africa in all seaters?

If it was up to you you'd make Glastonbury all seater
Isaac Newell September 21st, 2007, 02:21 PM It should have grass hills where you can sit and take a hamper.
IHaveNoLegs September 22nd, 2007, 02:09 AM that'd be great fun in the rain
