From the picture it is one sided (NIT entrance). Will the underpass extended to the other side(towards VKN)?

Underpass constructed for 4 way traffic. I think, they won't extend further in VKN side...

AIE should provide flawless services otherwise AAI to give permission for international players to operate services from Trichy...

I don't know .. what our great central ministers including HM sitting in delhi??????? :bash:

I guess AIE has technical problem with their aircraft and they continue flying it in the Trichy-Dubai/Singapore sector. It is frustrating that AAI gives permissions to international airlines to fly to various Tier II cities but not Trichy.

The Bharathidasan University will offer five four-year Bachelor of Science (B.S.) programmes in computer science, bio-technology, bio-informatics, geo-sciences and electronics from the next academic year.

The programmes will be offered through the varsity’s School of Science, Engineering and Technology and its affiliate arts and science colleges. The university, the first in the country to introduce B.Sc.Computer Science way back in 1983, has also pioneered in introducing the B.S. programmes, Vice Chancellor M. Ponnavaikko said at a meeting of the university’s Standing Committee on Academic Affairs here on Saturday.Explaining the need for the programmes, Dr. Ponnavaikko pointed out that graduates from arts and science colleges were not eligible to join M.S./M. Tech programmes abroad. They were also not considered for employment in the U.S. and other countries as the minimum educational requirement for higher education and employment in many countries was four years of university education.

According to DRM,Trichy electric trains between Trichy and Villupuram only after completion of Sub-station at Viruthachalam.

What is the problem in operating passenger trains when goods trains are being operated upto Airyalur? I smell something fishy here.

A joint venture of ANSALDOcaldaie Boilers India (P) Ltd and the Tiruchi-based GB Engineering will put up a facility near Tiruchi to manufacture boilers for thermal power plants based on supercritical technology.
ANSALDOcaldaie Boilers is a joint venture between Italian company Ansaldo — which is 50 per cent owned by Gammon India — and GB Engineering. The latter has a 15 per cent stake in ANSALDOcaldaie Boilers.

The facility that is coming up at Tiruchi will be equipped to produce boilers for 2,000 MW a year, Dr A. Manjunath, Managing Director, ANSALDOcaldaie Boilers, told Business Line. The facility will produce steam drum and other pressure parts, such as pipes. Dr Manjunath did not wish to disclose the proposed investments, but sources in the know say that the joint venture will put in around Rs 150 crore to start with.

Hope L&T considers a unit in Trichy too.

L&T has to seriously think about setting up unit rather than finding suppliers in Trichy.

Karaikal Port is just 125 Kms from Trichy, If they plan to setup in thuvakudi region, then distance will get reduced almost by 20 Kms..

It's not a big deal, considering Sriperumbudur distance from Chennai Port...

I think there is very less marketing of trichy for setting up any industry. Though trichy has a very good infrastructure and expertise for many decades for power plant industries, no MNC/big player have come here till now. Atleast now let the politician try bringing investments to this region.

There are lot of infrastructural developments happening on the national highways in trichy. But within the city, the infrastructure is not good. The roads which existed 20, 30 years back still remain the same while the traffic had increased many folds. The real pathetic region is the Gandhi Market area. This area still remains the same in spite of the one way traffic introduced.

If a MNC or a IT major see these kind of infrastructure then they wont establish their plant in trichy.

Some bold direction are needed to improve the city infrastructure.

THE PURPOSE OF L&T PERSONNEL'S TRICHY VISIT IS NOT TO IDENTIFY SUPPLIERS. THAT WAS JUST A REASON. THEIR MAIN AIM WAS TO RECRUIT MANPOWER FROM TRICHY FOR THEIR HAZIRA PLANT. THEY HAVE RECRUITED NEARLY 200 PEOPLE INCLUDING HIGHER OFFICIALS FROM BHEL.

When L and T formed their JV initially, Chennai, Coimbatore and Hazira were shortlisted. Both Chennai and CBE lost the project due to the speed in which Gujarat acted and recently L and T chairman confirmed that Gujarat is the best when it comes to investment friendly atmosphere. TN has all the right policies but the administrative machinery should act fast. Land bank should be created to avoid loss of time.

^^ CII Trichy must act fast to market the strength ...

Good news that BHEL started using Kaaraikal Port instead of carriying all the load to Chennai Port which is almost 350 Kms from here.....

Most of the upcoming Power plants are very close to Trichy than any other Tier I & Tier II cities...Nagapatinum, Thirukuvalai, Jayakondam, Neyveli, Cuddalore etc...

As Subra said, before inviting any majors, CII/TN must create Landbank first....

Recently Bharat forge select Guj. for power equipments, TN should have got that for Trichy. L&T so far didn't invest any substantial amount in CBE.

No. They have already announced CBE as their hub. Even 10 days back their CEO Mr.Naik opened a new casting facility in their campus. They have a huge campus in L&T controlled bye-pass road. For Trichy someone has to take some serious initiatives.

http://www.lntebg.com/news/upload/EBG/CoimbatoreInaugZ.html
Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) ¾ the USD 4 billion engineering, technology and construction company ¾ crossed yet another milestone in its growth with the back to back inauguration of the first two facilities at its 300 acre campus in Coimbatore. The facilities for the manufacture of high end industrial valves and switchboards will cater to domestic and international markets, and position India as a global player in the high end manufacturing space.

http://www.financialexpress.com/news/l&t-to-make-coimbatore-plant-into-global-manufacturing-hub/196600/

http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/news-by-industry/energy/power/LT-plans-to-generate-7000-MW-power/articleshow/5293048.cms

The company has invested Rs 120 crore at the facility, taking its total investment in Coimbatore to Rs 320 crore. It already has precision manufacturing facilities for various purposes apart from a switchgear design centre and valves facility in Coimbatore.

Noting that Tamil Nadu is top on its investment chart, Mr Naik said, the company is committed to invest Rs 4000 crore in port, shipyard and highways projects in the state. It is likely to be increased to Rs 5000 crore by next year. "This doesn’t include the investment already made in the facilities in Coimbatore and Chennai," he added.

It is good that a board member of L&T is from Trichy. Let us hope he will take some initiative to start a unit in trichy.

Trichy has good manpower, needed land available, less water problem, good connectivity (road / train), very good cultural place, overall good atmosphere.

But it lack support from political people. Its time for high amount of investment in power industries, which trichy need to tap properly.

Good! Let L&T provide part of this upcoming investment for Trichy in addition to Chennai and Coimbatore.

L&T has focused on CBE for its speciality industries like Switchgears, Valves etc., and similarly it will be prudent for investing in Trichy for Boilers, Fabrication etc.

The city will have its first 4D' theatre in a week. The experience centre' named Funmax is being set up by Dynamic Dimensions India in Abirami Mall. The start-up company, which is setting up this theater, plans to launch two more such centers in Chennai.

4D as a technology is based on the 3D platform. It combines the effect of 3D movies by incorporating external physical effects like movement in seats and environmental enhancers like virtual fog, rain, lighting, air bubbles and smells in the movie watching experience. "This will enable audiences to have both visual and sensory experience and create a never before experience," the company said in a release. The technology provided by the company is sourced from the Israel-based Simnoa Technologies.

Dynamic Dimensions is also planning to open franchises in tier II and III towns in Tamil Nadu. "We are close to finalizing the franchisee agreements to set up similar theaters in Coimbatore, Trichy and Erode," said S Sivakumar, executive director of Dynamic Dimensions. He added, that each such experience center' which has a minimum of 30 seats costs around Rs 3 crore to set up. The company expects to break-even in two years.

A delegation of BHELSIA (Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited Small and Medium Industries’ Association) officials called on Chairman and Managing Director of BHEL B. Prasada Rao during his recent Tiruchi visit and assured him that the performance of vendors will be improved to meet future challenges.

Stating that BHEL has to complete commissioning of boilers to the tune of 3,400 MW within the next four months of this current fiscal, Mr. Rao requested BHELSIA to ensure that vendors move forward in enhancing their capacity. He wanted the vendors to ensure sequential dispatches and timely delivery for the various on-going projects for meeting the various targets.

Thanking the BHEL for its excellent support to industries in and around Tiruchi in the last 40 years, BHELSIA president Rajappa Rajkumar assured Mr. Rao that the vendors here would improve their performance by enhancing their capacities to meet the BHEL’s target and the nation’s power generation programme. The delegation led by Mr. Rajkumar comprised S. Sampath, Secretary, and T.R. Pannerselvam, treasurer.

They met Mr. Rao in the presence of A.V. Krishnan, Executive Director, BHEL, Tiruchi, and G. Ramakrishna, General Manager, Outsourcing, BHEL.

TIRUCHI: With the Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) contemplating substantial increase in tonnage target for its vendors in Tiruchi region next year, the BHEL Small Industries’ Association (BHELSIA) has started promoting the idea of specialisation among its member units.

Of the 6.5 lakh tonnes outsourcing target that the BHEL has fixed for 2009-10, 4.5 lakh tonnes pertain to ancillary units in Tiruchi and surrounding districts.

Specialisation, according to BHELSIA president Rajappa Rajkumar, is by and large possible with the existing machinery.

Develops expertise

Also, in the event of an ancillary unit specialising in a particular major product, it develops expertise in the process of improving upon the quality. The BHEL, Tiruchi, has accorded its in-principle approval to this idea, it is learnt.

Once the product-wise procurement is spelt out next year by the BHEL, the BHELSIA would evolve a plan of action. On an average, ten to twelve units could focus on a particular product, Mr. Rajappa explained.

The BHELSIA also hopes for a favourable response from the BHEL to its request for manufacturing special products with own materials. It was to avert the waiting time for the raw material supplies.

Meanwhile, the BHELSIA has re-focussed its attention on improving the infrastructure facilities and creating a common facility centre in the Thuvakkudi Industrial Estate with funding support from the Union Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises.

Improving the quality of roads, drainage and lighting on the estate premises will create a better image for the member units that are into exporting business.

Equipment like CNC cutting machine which individual member units consider quite expensive to own will be put for common use of member units at the common facility centre.

According to Mr. Rajappa Rajkumar, the common facility centre could cost up to Rs. 10 crore, and Rs. 6 crore will be required for infrastructure improvement.

This road can connect pudukottai road via IT Park and the entire stretch should be four laned.

I don't think, BHEL would allow public to use this road as entire stretch meant for BHEL Workshops...

Immediate next to new BHEL unit, Navalpattu residential area started. Also there is a security gate at the meeting point of this road and Navalpattu Road (Where all the private and SETC busses plying -Via Thiruverumbur route).

Normally, security people allowing two wheelers to use this road, as they think all the people are going either to BHEL Workshop or BHEL township. Some of Local people (from Navalpattu, OFT, Police Colony, mathur, Kottapattu) going to Thuvakudi Industrial area using this link road (comes under BHEL workshop premises ) as they have very good road insfrasture (via BHEL R& D Centre, BIM, BHEL Unit) till G.B. Engineering where meets in BELL nagar road.

Some time, I used to see some SETC busses from BHEL to OFT uses this route...I love to see this road to be allowed by BHEL to go to IT park

Work for manufacturing four new oil-fired steam locos begins

TIRUCHI: Preliminary work connected with the manufacture of four new oil-fired steam locomotives for the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) has commenced at the Golden Rock Railway Workshop here.

Alongside embarking on the task of procuring major sub assemblies required for the oil-fired steam locos, the workshop has simultaneously commenced “in-house” manufacture of certain small components for the engines.

The Railway Board has chosen the workshop for manufacturing the oil-fired steam engines as it had the designs and the necessary technical know-how for carrying out the work.

Periodic Overhaul (POH) of the steam locomotives that are currently in operation in the Mettupalayam – Udhagamandalam hilly terrain section are done at the over 75-year-old Workshop.

Various vendors have been approached for the procurement of major sub assemblies such as boilers, cylinders and frames for the manufacture of new steam locos that will belong to the “X” class, workshop authorities here told The Hindu.

The Railway Board has already sanctioned Rs.40 crore for the manufacture of four oil-fired steam locos. The first steam engine would roll out in December 2010, the authorities said, adding that efforts would be made to advance the delivery.

A senior official said that of the seven steam locos that were in operation in the over 100-year-old NMR metre gauge section, two engines had already been converted from coal to oil-fired by changing some components in the locos.

The work of converting two more steam locos from coal to oil-fired was currently on at the workshop.

The engines have been brought to the workshop for POH, which is done once in four years.

The steam locos would be fitted with on-board generators for running the burners, water and oil pumps and blowers. The official said that one oil-fired steam loco would be dispatched shortly and the other by March.

TIRUCHI: The Corporation has received an allocation of Rs.6.81 crore from the government under the Infrastructure Gap Filling Fund for 2009-10.

The civic body has planned to strengthen and fortify some of the important drainage channels in the city to prevent floods in the low-lying areas and also rebuild a few drainages along arterial roads. This apart, three new blocks of residential quarters for sanitary workers would be built utilising the funds.

The Corporation would spend about Rs.75 lakh for strengthening the Kollankulam channel, which serves as an important drain from the Kollankulam tank in Edamalaipattipudur. The overflow of the tank often results in the flooding of low-lying colonies in Edamalaipattipudur and Karumandapam areas.

The civic body has also set aside Rs.50 lakh each for taking up flood prevention works along the Kathan Vaical at Ammaiyappa Nagar and Thillai Nagar Rettai Vaical. Though both the channels were being desilted periodically, there have been persistent demands to put in place permanent repairs to ensure that the drains were able to carry the rainwater flow at times of monsoon. The Corporation would spend another Rs.50 lakh for flood prevention works in Jothi Nagar and Srinivasa Nagar in Ariyamangalam, two other flood-prone areas.

This apart, the Corporation would rebuild drainage channels along the East Boulevard Road, between the Gandhi Market and the Maharani Theatre at an estimated cost of Rs.70 lakh and from Bharathi Nagar to the level crossing on the same road, at an estimate of Rs.56 lakh. A new drainage channel would be built along the Nelson Road in Srirangam at a cost of Rs.25 lakh. The Corporation would spend two jet rodders at a cost of Rs.55 lakh for clearing blockades in the underground sewer system utilising the allocation, officials said.

http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/news-by-industry/auto/tyres/MRF-net-profit-up-by-75-tyre-prices-to-go-up/articleshow/5362831.cms

Terming the 12.5% growth on net sales this year towards September as fairly heartening considering the labour strike in two of its plants, MRF executive VP (marketing) Koshy K Varghese said "the worst is behind us. So, we assume things should be better in 2009-10, at all our plants. As far as future is concerned, we are expanding capacities in all factories and that should start giving numbers in January itself."

The raw material prices, especially the steep hike in prices of natural rubber during the last two months have dented the bottomline, he told ET.

The price of raw material, which constitutes 50% of the tyre cost, from Rs 70 to Rs 80 per kg is now hovering around Rs 135 to Rs 140 per kg. Therefore, MRF is certain to raise the price of tyres.

"Its when and the quantum of increase that has to be decided. However, one has to see internally what best can be done to arrest the cost push. There is a very competitive environment, which has to be factored. But one must assess the reasons for natural rubber cost going up," Mr Varghese said.

Elaborating on this, he said futures trading in natural rubber could have triggered the astronomical push. "That’s happening in natural prices. Otherwise, no reason fundamentally. Probably, like other cases, futures trading in natural rubber might have to be banned by the government," he said, seeking the duty-free import of natural rubber.

This would also help to tame inflation to some extent, he observed.

The tyre major has chalked out expansion plans that is expected to boost its existing capacities by 20-25%. "Capex spend would be substantial. We should be adding capacities in virtually all product categories," Mr Varghese said, hinting that the extra capacities would need an investment of Rs 800 to Rs 900 crore next year.

"We have identified a site in Trichy where we have acquired land and we will commence work there soon. Doesn’t matter where it is, the question is to bring in additional capacity," was his response, when asked about the location for its greenfield project.

On MRF evaluating inorganic growth opportunities, he said while the company is open to acquisitions, it had to make business sense. "But, there is no proposal at this juncture," he hastened to add.

About MNCs and domestic tyre companies strengthening their footprints in Tamil Nadu — the auto hub and MRF’s backyard, Mr Varghese said "Competition is not new. It has always been there in the past, even in the preceding 10-15 years. The question is how we manage the market and costs. We have been market leaders for 23 years now."

The Covai Mani Group is setting up a state-of-the-art steel plant at Musiri, Trichy district, at a cost of Rs 120 crore and a sponge iron plant at Madukkarai near Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu at an outlay of Rs 195 crore.

The plant coming up on a 50-acre site at Musiri is expected to have the capacity to produce 1.1 lakh tonne of billets and one lakh tonne of TMT reinforcement bars, channels, joists, angles and rounds. The plant is to go on stream in April 2010.

The sponge iron plant at Madukkarai, coming up in 40 acre, is to have a production capacity of 1.1 lakh tpa. The construction work is underway and is expected to be completed by December 2011.

A power generation unit capable of generating 120 million units (which includes six windmills with a capacity of generating 16 MW) is to be set up there as well. While 30 per cent of the power generated will be utilised by the group companies, the rest is likely to be sold to the new Musiri unit.

The group has four companies - Raja Steels, Raja Sponge Iron and Energy, MMS Steels and Kanyaka Fine Weld. The products from these companies are marketed under the brand name 'Covai Raja'.

The Tiruchi Corporation has decided to formally approach the State Highways Department, seeking the transfer to the civic body of some important road stretches within the City that were currently under the maintenance of the department.

The Corporation will send in a proposal to the Highways Departments seeking the transfer of 11 such roads in the city. Important among these were the road stretch between the Cauvery North bank and the Coleroon South Bank, the Mambazha Salai, between the Tiruchi-Chennai Truck Road to Amma Mandapam Junction, the Amma Mandapam Road, between Amma Mandapam and Gandhi Road, and the road stretch between the road overbridge and the Arunachala Mandram near Mainguard Gate.

The Corporation seeks to take over the road between the Anna Statue in Chinthamani to Mainguard Gate (running via the Chinthamani Bazaar and Shrimati Indira Gandhi College) and the road stretch between the Mela Chinthamani and the Kudamuritti bridge on the Tiruchi-Karur Highway. It would also take over the Chinthamani by-pass road between the Chathram Bus Stand Kamaraj Statue to the Kudamuritti Bridge under the proposal.

Another arterial road between the Head Post Office and the TVS Tollgate is sought to be taken over by the Corporation. The civic body has also proposed the transfer of control of the road stretch between the Old Palpannai Traffic Island to the Palakkarai road overbridge and the Sangiliandapuram-Senthaneerpuram Road.

Some of service organisations in the City have been demanding that the road stretches be taken over by the Corporation so that they were developed and strengthened along with other roads in the city. For, they contended that these stretches often stood out in isolation, when roads in their neighbourhood were being taken up for development. The Transport Minister K.N. Nehru had also suggested that the Corporation take over the roads to ensure uniform development.

Corporation officials say they were had to seek permission of the Highways Department whenever repairs had to be taken up for faults in underground sewer lines or drinking water pipelines. This was causing considerable delay. Besides, with the four-lane projects going around the city, traffic was being diverted through many of these roads. Local residents look up to the Corporation for carrying out repairs and development. Hence it would be better if the roads were brought under the control of the civic body for effective maintenance and improvement. With the Corporation expecting a massive infusion of funds under the Tamil Nadu Urban Road Improvement Project soon, the roads could be developed and strengthened to good standards, the officials said.

The proposal, after approval from the Corporation Council, would be forwarded to the Highways Department for follow up action, they said.

Mobile tax collection centre to be launched

Special Correspondent
TIRUCHI: The Tiruchi Corporation would soon launch a mobile tax collection centre for the benefit of tax payers in the city.

The Corporation would retrofit a light heavy vehicle with necessary equipment for the purpose. The Corporation council, at an urgent meeting chaired by Mayor S.Sujatha on Wednesday, approved a resolution awarding a contract to the T.V.Sundaram Iyengar and Sons Limited, Madurai, to carry out the retrofitting work at an estimated cost of Rs.7.45 lakhs.

An official resolution on the subject said that currently under the online system of tax collection, computerised service centres were functioning at the Corporation zonal offices. This apart, taxes were also being collected through select bank branches. However, in an attempt to reduce the rush at the counters, it was proposed to launch a mobile tax collection centre.

Parking lot
The Corporation has also decided to do away with the parking lot on the Nandhi Kovil Street along the Teppakulam in the city following a High Court direction to the civic body to consider a representation from a petitioner objecting to it. The petitioner, J.Moses Richard, had contended that parking of vehicles on the road was posing much hardship to residents in negotiating the road. He had demanded the shifting of the parking lot.

Speaking on the matter, O.R. Sriraman of the Communist Party of India, demanded that the Corporation remove the fruit stalls and a few other encroachers on the road. Commissioner T.T.Balsamy assured that the encroachments would be removed immediately.

The council approved a resolution cancelling the contract given to AWAKES, a voluntary organisation for the maintenance of the Gandhi Market and the Central and Chathram Bus Stands in the City.

The Corporation would take over the maintenance of the three places now. The council also approved a resolution seeking the take over of 11 Highways Department roads by the Corporation in the city.

Efforts taken to promote educational and medical tourism in Tiruchi.

A Sri Lankan delegation is expected to visit the city to organise cultural programmes.

TIRUCHI: A delegation of the Tiruchi Travel Federation, which visited Sri Lanka on a three-day visit to promote the tourism potential of the Tiruchi region, has suggested the establishment of a convention centre for hosting tourism related and business/cultural meets on a regular basis in the city.

The government and the district administration should consider establishing a convention centre or make available existing facilities such as the Kalaiarangam for the purpose, the delegation representatives said. The TTF has offered to raise the required funds for building the convention centre if the district administration came forward to allot a piece of land for the purpose.

The suggestion was based on the feedback from the travel/tourism trade in Sri Lanka, who suggested that apart from promoting tourist attractions in the region, Tiruchi could host conferences and cultural programmes on a regular basis if only there was a good convention centre. The Sri Lankan trade representatives also suggested that liberalisation of visa rules by India would attract more tourists from the island nation to South India. The trade representatives have promised to support the efforts taken by TTF to promote medical and educational tourism in Tiruchi.

The 13-member delegation, led by T.H.Radhakrishnan, president, TTF, and Station Manager, Air India, made presentations to the local trade representatives at Colombo and Kandy. While Mr.Radhakrishnan and others from the travel/tourism industry gave an overview on what Tiruchi region had to offer for tourists, K.Meena, Principal, Shrimati Indira Gandhi College and president, Internet Users Club of Tiruchi, made a presentation on the higher educational opportunities available for students from Sri Lanka here. K.Chandrakumar, Managing Director, Kavery Medical Center and Hospital, made a presentation on medical tourism and highlighting the medical infrastructure available in the city. V.Vasudevan, vice president, TTF, and Managing Director, Sangam Group of Hotels, made a presentation on the hospitality industry. A video presentation on the tourist attractions in the region was also made.

The Director General of Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, S.Kalaiselvam, and a host of representatives from the local travel attended the presentation at Colombo. At Kandy, L.B.Aluvihare, Mayor, was among those who attended the presentation by the TTF team.

A Sri Lankan delegation comprising representatives of travel/tourism industry is expected to visit Tiruchi to organise cultural programmes and also to participate in a Food Festival planned by TTF in the city in February 2010.

The team has also planned another visit to Colombo to explore more business opportunities, according to its secretary, G.Ravichandran.

It is high time, that both the Southern Railway and the district administration take cognisance of the plight of the people travelling by trains at the Tiruverambur railway station.

A major station in the Tiruchi – Thanjavur section, Tiruverumbur is being used by a large number of people round the clock.

Bharath Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), many ancillary units of the BHEL, fabrication units, National Institute of Technology, Tiruchi (NIT-T), Bharathidasan Institute of Management (BIM), Government ITI, Government Polytechnic College, Government Arts College, State Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology, Irrigation Management Training Institute, SIDCO Industrial Estate, Indian Oil Corporation Filling Station, State Transport Corporation Refurbishing unit, etc are situated in and around Tiruverumbur, apart from a number of schools at the BHEL Township.

Cross sections of the people complain that the station lacks basic facilities and needs a face lift.

Problems aplenty

The condition of the main approach road and the small road leading to the station from the Tiruverambur bus stop on the Thanjavur-Tiruchi National Highways is bad and desperately needs attention. The station lacks several basic amenities, including protected drinking water and toilet facilities.

The approach roads to the station from the Tiruverambur main road should be widened and repaired to enable four wheelers to reach the station without difficulty. It is horrible to reach the station from the road during rainy season, says P.S.Pandiyan, an electrical mechanic of Tiruverambur.

Thanks to no fencing along the rail lines, people living near the station indulge in crossing the rail lines for easy access, despite the risk of being knocked down by trains, especially during night hours.

R. Prakash, a resident near the Tiruverambur railway station, which is flooded with sewage water with unhygienic condition, said that several representations to the Southern Railway to construct a foot over-bridge at the Tiruverambur station for the benefit of the people to reach either side of the station, went in vain and the Railways did not take the issue seriously.

Pointing out the increase in chain-snatching cases in the recent times, the commuters demand posting of police personnel for the safety of the women passengers during night hours.

P. Joseph, a retired railway employee, told The Hindu that the station has become a haven for anti-social elements and drunkards who were causing nuisance during night hours and picked up unnecessary quarrel with the commuters.

He pointed out that the Railways should take immediate steps to open computerised reservation centre (CRS) at Tiruverambur as it would be very helpful for the people to do reservation for various trains without going to Tiruchi junction or BHEL township reservation centre. The station also needs proper maintenance of its platforms and provision of drinking water taps at many places, he said.

Even though Tiruverumbur station is a nerve centre, express trains like Jan Shatabdi, Tiruchi – Mayiladuturai express are not stopped at this station. The stopping of these trains in Tiruverambur will be of immense help to the commuters.

A resolution in this regard was passed at the Tiruchi district committee meeting of the CPI-M on Thursday held under the chairmanship of CPI-M district executive committee member A. Palanisamy.

CPI-M State executive committee member P. Sampath, CPI-M district secretary S. Sridhar and others spoke.

Disclosing this, state health secretary V. K. Subburaj said, “If the dean’s private clinic is proved, he will be transferred and that will also be a warning to other government doctors. TIRUCHI: The state government is examining the proposal of extending the Tiruchi Corporation by including Tiruverumbur area, according to Transport Minister K. N. Nehru.

Mr. Nehru said a 29-acre site at Tiruverumbur is being considered for shifting Gandhi Market from the city.

Referring to the progress of the works on the setting of the Tidel Park in the city, Mr. Nehru said the park will provide jobs to 5,000 youths. This park will prove a boon to the whole district.

He said the state Health Department had proposed to upgrade the facilities and expand the Annal Gandhi Memorial Government Head Quarters Hospital and the K. A. P. Viswanatham Government Medical College on an outlay of Rs. 50 crores and this was informed to him by the top Department officials who visited the city recently.

The Government has sanctioned Rs. 5.2 crores to Tiruchi Corporation for stabilising the four PWD channels passing in the city limits and ensure smooth flow of water by removing the encroachment.

To augment the supply of drinking water to Tiruchi city, new collector wells are being sunk in the Coleroon river. The works will be completed in a few months time. This will improve the litres per day supply of water from the present 90 litres to 110 litres.

The Corporation recently launched works for the construction of 30 overhead tanks in the city and the completion of these works will strengthen the distribution and ensure adequate supply of potable water in all the areas, Mr. Nehru added.

TIRUVARUR: A semi-circle road around Tiruvarur will be laid at a cost of Rs.60 crore.

The road will be formed around Tiruvarur linking Kattur, Thandalai, Kidarankonan with the Collectorate complex. The road to run to a distance of 10 km will start from the Collectorate on Thanjavur main road and connect Senthamangalam on Mayiladuturai road, Kattur on Kumbakonam road and end at Nagapattinam road.

Two bridges will be constructed across Odampokkiyar and one bridge across Sukkanar at a cost of Rs.8 crore for the project. A railway overbridge will be constructed at a cost of Rs.12 crore. A sum of Rs. 10 crore has been allotted for land acquisition. Another Rs.30 crore would be spent on laying the road, said U. Mathivanan, Dairy Development Minister, after inspecting the site here on Sunday. A report will be submitted to the Government after the field survey.

The Minister said that once the road was laid, it would ease the congestion in Tiruvarur. Being located at a strategic point, Tiruvarur links Nagapattinam, Velankanni and Nagore which attract a lot of pilgrims from the whole of India. Besides transport, trucks and lorries carrying oil products also ply via Tiruvarur. The semi-circle road will certainly ease the congestion. This has been a long pending demand of the people and it will be met soon. Mr. Mathivanan said he advised highways engineers to complete the project as quickly as possible.

Many rural roads had been damaged in the recent rain and assistance sought from the Government for repairing them, he said.

The Rs. 50 lakh Tourist Complex in the vicinity of Brahadeeswarar temple at Gandgaikondacholapuram near Jayankondam, a UNESCO (United Nations Educational, scientific and Cultural Organisation) world Heritage monument maintained by the Archaeology Society of India, is nearing completion.

The Tourism Department which is supervising the works will hand over the complex consisting of a museum, shops, rest rooms, and canteen to the HR & CE department that runs the temple in a month’s time, it is learnt. More than 95 per cent of the works have been completed. Once the electrical works get over, the complex will be commissioned, official sources said. The rest rooms encompass two-block one one-block deluxe set up rooms and ordinary rooms.

According to the Executive Officer of the temple M. Asana Ambikai, ever since the temple was declared as a world heritage monument during 2004, the number of visitors has been on the rise.Foreign tourists evince greater interest in understanding the grandeur and excellence of Chola architecture and sculpture that the temple features. . The sprawling lush green lawns on the temple premises that are nurtured well by the Horticulture department teems with children especially during week-ends.

The temple ranks among the top four places of archaeological significance in Tamil Nadu. The other three are the Brahadeeswarar Temple in Thanjavur, the Airavatesvara temple of Darasuram, and the other Chola temple in Tirubuvanam. The work on the Tourist complex located on a two-acre site in the limits of Guruvalappar Kovil revenue village commenced in 2007.

Mumbai: Mumbai-based engineering company Hindustan Dorr-Oliver (HDO) is looking at Dahej (in Gujarat) and Tamil Nadu for its second plant, executive director S C Sekaran said. The company plans to manufacture heat exchangers and pressure vessels, among other things, at the plant. "We plan to spend Rs 60-80 crore on the plant," Sekaran said.

He had in March told DNA Money that the firm was considering Trichy, Coimbatore and Chennai in Tamil Nadu for the plant. "But now we are looking at Dahej too and we will decide the location for the plant by the fourth quarter," said Sekaran. Work on the plant would begin 10-12 months after HDO zeroes in on the venue.

Sakaran said the plant would churn out volumes worth Rs 250 crore every year. He had earlier said the plant would have a capacity of 6,000 tonnes per annum. HDO's current plant is in Ahmedabad, the capacity of which the company upped from 4,000 tpa to 6,500 tpa at a cost of about Rs 30 crore in the beginning of the year.

Negative move!! Why specifically these airports - coz of recent development works?? Seems as if some deliberate moves to reduce international traffic in/out of TRZ. Hmm!!!!

To be constructed at a cost of Rs. 11.50 crores

TIRUVARUR: Roads and transport play an important road in the economic development of the country, said S. S. Palani Manickam, Union Minister of State for Finance at Koradachery near here on Wednesday.

He laid the foundation stone for three bridges to be constructed at a cost of Rs. 11.50 crores. The bridges are Muthupettai – Vaimedu bridge across river the Koraiyar, Koradachery Vettar bridge and Sannanallur - Mudikondan bridge.

Mr. Palani Manickam said while the Central Government was making all the national highways into four lane roads, the State government was keen on making all the state highways into two-lane roads.

This is only to avoid accidents. He called for creating awareness among people in using these world standards roads. He said that whenever the DMK came to power roads and bridges were improved.

Composite Thanjavur district, which is Cauvery delta, has lot of bridges. Tiruvarur bridge across the river the Coleroon linking Thanjavur and Ariyalur districts was built by the DMK government.

Kulithalai bridge across the river the Cauvery was also built during the DMK regime.

Vellakoil M. P. Saminathan, Highways and Minor Ports Minister, said that Tamil Nadu has national highways for a distance of 4,254 km.

Of them 3,200 km is maintained by National Highways Authority of India. The rest is maintained by the State government with aid given by Central Government.

With the World Bank assistance, road work from Arcot to Nagapattinam and Nagapattinam to Tuticorin is going on. A bypass road will be laid around Tiruvarur when the national highways from Nagapattinam to Gudalur is completed.

For this bypass road, land acquisition alone will cost Rs. 10 crores.

He said that the Needamangalam – Koradachery will also come into existence once the NH is completed. He sought the help of Mr. Palani Manickam to help in this matter.

U. Mathivanan, Dairy Development Minister, K. Santhanam, Secretary, Highways and Minor Ports, M. Chandrasekaran, Tiruvarur Collector, A. K. S. Vijayan, MP, Padmavathy, Ulaganathan, Durai Chandrasekaran and Mahesh Krishnasamy, all MLAs, participated.

TIRUCHI: Bharathidasan University has readied the building plan for the permanent campus of the Dr. Kalaignar Arts and Science College at Lalgudi, a constituent unit, at nearby Perugavaranallur village.

The buildings will come up on a 12-acre site in the village based on the models of the permanent campuses of two other constituent colleges at Perambalur and Orthanad, it is learnt.

The college inaugurated by Minister for Higher Education K. Ponmudi started functioning last year with about 50 students enrolled in four programmes: BA Tamil, B.Com, BBA, and B.Sc. Computer Science. The number was less since the college began functioning nearly three months after the commencement of the academic year.

This year, the admissions have gone up manifold with the university according its nod to start four new programmes: BA English, BA History, B.Sc. IT, and BCA. There are now 450 students enrolled in the eight undergraduate programmes, Vice-Chancellor M. Ponnavaikko said. Adequate teachers had been appointed, he said, adding that only nominal fee was collected from students for quality education.

Transport Minister K.N. Nehru took the initiative of starting the college in his home town by mobilising Rs. 1.1 crore. As per the government norms, universities can start constituent arts and science colleges in places where the local public mobilises Rs. 1 crore, about 25 per cent of the project cost. The land for the campus, a long-felt need, is to be provided by his family-run G. Narayanan Educational Trust.

The estimate of the project cost would be arrived at after the site was transferred to the university, the Vice-Chancellor said. As for the other two constituent colleges, the one in Perambalur had started functioning from the main campus from the start of this year, and the permanent campus of the Orthanad college is on the verge of completion, he said.

TIRUCHI: Work on electrification of the track in the Villupuram - Tiruchi section is nearing completion and trains hauled by electric engines in the new electrified section will be operated in course of time, the Divisional Railway Manager, Tiruchi, S. Subramhanyan said.

Speaking at a meeting of consumers organised by the Consumer Protection Council, Tamil Nadu, here on Thursday, he said that a good part of the work had been completed, with the setting up of electricity sub-stations at Vriddhachalam, Ariyalur and Tiruchi.

The work on setting up of the sub-station at Vriddhachalam (in the Villupuram and Ariyalur segment) was delayed and the same had been addressed, ensuring expeditious execution.

Down Tiruchi, work on electrification of the Tiruchi - Dindigul track would be completed by March 2010; and up to Madurai, by June.

He said that the Tiruchi Junction has been identified as a model station for provision of passenger amenities. Improvements to platforms, retiring room, dormitory room and setting up of cameras formed part of the programme.

Concurring with a cross-section of consumers, Mr. Subramhanyan conceded that there was a strong case for introducing additional train between Tiruchi and Bangalore. Further, the widening gap between the demand and supply of coaches was yet another factor hindering the introduction of additional trains.

Replying to a complaint, he said that strict action would be taken against Railway employees found travelling at the compartments for physically-challenged persons. Surprise checks would be conducted at all the express and superfast trains. The Nagore - Thanjavur passenger would be extended to Tiruchi and a proposal for operating a day train from Tiruchi to Madurai had been sent.

S. Pushpavanam, Secretary of the Council, said that the Council would sponsor a few trolleys for the convenience of the passengers.

R. Natarajan, president of the council, was among those who spoke.

TIRUCHI: Work on doubling railway track in the Villupuram-Dindigul sector will begin in three or four months.

A sum of Rs.1,000 crore was sanctioned for doubling the 260-km stretch, Divisional Railway Manager S. Subramhanyan said.

Tenders had been called for and the allied process of finalising the same was currently on he said.

Addressing members of the Consumer Protection Council, Tamil Nadu, here on Thursday, he said that the work would reduce travel time and increase safety measures.

He said that there was a strong case for operating additional trains in congested routes.

He conceded that the passengers travelling by unreserved compartments needed more comforts, especially in the overcrowded routes. However, the huge outlay required for operating more trains would not match with the present fares, he said.

Complete integrated Collectorate in time

TIRUCHI: Deputy Chief Minister M.K.Stalin has instructed the officials to ensure the completion of the new integrated Collectorate complex for Tiruchi within the stipulated time.

Mr.Stalin gave the instructions while inspecting the progress of the construction of the building here on Sunday. The Deputy Chief Minister was on a brief visit to the city en route to Karur.

The new integrated Collectorate complex, sanctioned at an estimated cost of Rs.12.01 crore, is scheduled to be completed by October 30, 2010. Accompanied by S.Gandhiselvan, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, K.N.Nehru, Transport Minister, N.Selvaraj, Forest Minister, and Collector T.Soundiah, Mr.Stalin inspected the building coming up in front of the existing Collector’s Office campus in the city. The 1.10 lakh square feet building will come up on a seven-acre land. The land, previously held by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board and the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, Pudukottai, has been taken over by the district administration. The buildings at the site were demolished and the construction work began in October end.

The Collectorate block will consist of ground plus three floors with two elevators, according to Public Works Department sources. The existing Collector’s office, constructed in 1995, has been found inadequate to accommodate various government departments.:bash::bash:

Barrage across Cauvery by 2011, says Stalin

KARUR: Work on a barrage across the Cauvery at Mayanur in Karur district is expected to be completed by February 2011, Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said here on Sunday.

It would serve the intra-state river linking plan to provide water to parched districts in the south.

Speaking to mediapersons after inspecting the progress of the work estimated to cost Rs.189 crore, Mr. Stalin said that so far 26 per cent of the financial target, working out to Rs.45.58 crore, had been achieved.

The barrage would be a boon to the people in Kulithalai-Krishnarayapuram-Mayanur region in Karur district and Thottiam-Kattuputhur region in Tiruchi district. It would also double up as road connectivity to the two regions across the river. The project commenced in February 2009.

Excess water during floods in the Cauvery could be diverted to the parched areas in the southern districts by linking the Agniyaru, Koraiyaru, Manimutharu, Vaigai and Gundaru, Mr. Stalin said. At least 5.4 tmcft water could be harnessed to feed the southern districts.

Two-lane traffic could be of great help to the people of the Mayanur-Krishnarayapuram region and Thottiam-Kattuputhur region.

By using the Mayanur barrage, a 45-km detour would be avoided and even heavy vehicular traffic allowed over the barrage.:cheers:

Transport Minister K.N. Nehru, Forests Minister N. Selvaraj, Union Minister of State for Health S. Gandhiselvan, PWD Chief Engineer Moorthy, Karur Collector J. Uma Maheswari and others accompanied the Deputy Chief Minister.

The Trichy-Karur NH67 never crosses Cauvery. The Mayanoor Barrage will come across the cauvery between Kattuputhur and Thottiyam similar to the Cauvery bridge between Musiri and Kulithali. This way the people dont have to travel all the way to the Cauvery bridge but use the planned Mayanoor Barrage to cross over Kattuputhur and Thottiyam

I guess the existing Collectorate was build when Trichy became a corporation in 1994.Many cities and towns have new integrated collectorate and bus stand. But Trichy doesnt have an integrated collectorate or bus stand even after 16 years of becoming corporation. Hope at least the new integrated collectorate is completed by 2010.

Otherwise, we may have to propose to cut salaries and allowances for those officials and ministers involved for such infrastructure projects. Well, if possible!

Currently AIE and Air Asia(evening flight) aircrafts are only allowed to utilise aerobridges.

Anyway, it was an wonderful feeling and experience after years of boarding buses, when I started walking along the tinted side glasses of the newly erected aerobrige at Trichy airport, during my most recent return flight from KL with Air Asia.:)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWd6o15Qxuk

I don't see the inside of the aerobridge but only the bus.Anyway, what is the point in having an aerobridge when airlines don't use it?? Is it because AAI and airlines disagree on the fee for using the new integrated terminal equipments?

Thanks bajk, the video was taken sometime back during one of my trips with Sri Lankan airlines. However, with regard to aerobridge internal view, it's not possible due to security reasons.

Next, had highlighted with Sri Lankan airlines officials on the use of aerobridges by the airlines itself, but was told that due to insufficient aerobridges at Trichy airport, at the time of it's operations coinciding with other airlines, is one of the cause. Perhaps, think power supply could be other cause.

Nevertheless, mentioned that they will try compromise with other airlines in scheduling the use of aerobridges. Well, not sure how?

AAI to slash borrowing for upgrade of airports.

The country’s largest airport operator, state-owned Airports Authority of India (AAI), is considering ways to slash its borrowing requirement for modernising 24 non-metro airports over the next two years by about 44 per cent to Rs 2,800 crore from the originally envisaged Rs 5,000 crore. It has worked out a two-pronged strategy of cutting costs and boosting revenues towards this end.

According to an AAI executive, the operator is exploring ways to trim the modernisation plan of some airports and also considering levying development fees in about nine airports over and above the 10 already identified. AAI is undertaking an internal assessment to identify non-metro airports where Development Fee (DF) can be levied, apart from the ten airports for which proposals are ready and are under the active consideration of the civil aviation ministry and the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA). These ten airports are Trivandrum, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Tiruchirapalli, Vishakhapatnam, Vizag, Varanasi, Amritsar and Udaipur. AAI hopes to fetch Rs 120 crore through levying of DF.

In another revenue boosting measure, AAI is evaluating the prospect of turning the old Hyderabad airport into a hospitality district, developing 10-15 acres of the land for the purpose. At the same time, Bangalore Airport, which is mired in court cases, may also be re-opened as a low-cost airport, for low-cost flying. “We are evaluating both these options, and are also looking at starting academies at these airports,” said the official.

On the cost cutting front, the ministry has asked the AAI to prepare the cost breakdown for each of the 24 non-metro airports. “We are re-looking at the ongoing projects where savings can be achieved. For instance, at the Kolkata Airport the cost variation is quite high on account of declining traffic, and the authority has decided to delay the construction of a control tower by eighteen months,” said the official.

To meet the capex requirements, the authority plans to raise Rs 1,200 crore during fiscal 2009-10. Recently, the AAI received the approval to levy DF, beginning January1, 2010, at the Jaipur Airport where departing passengers will have to shell out Rs 150 on domestic routes and Rs 1000 on international routes. Previously, Delhi and Mumbai were also allowed to charge DF to meet the capital expenditure gap.

AAI’s profits fell by around 36 per cent to Rs 687 crore in 2008-09 as compared to 2007-08 on account of a dip in passenger traffic and the economic slowdown.

AAI plans to borrow Rs 2,800 cr for non-metro airports.

Ashwini Phadnis

New Delhi, Jan. 4

The state-owned airport operator Airports Authority of India (AAI) plans to borrow up to Rs 2,800 crore over the next two years to take up development work in 16 non-metro airports.

“The money will be raised either through bonds or private placement. A final decision on the quantum of funds required and what route should be followed for raising the funds will be decided soon,” AAI sources told Business Line. The airports which are likely to benefit from the funds raised include at least three in the South — Mangalore, Tiruchi and Vizag.

The money is being raised as AAI plans to “concentrate on consolidating” the ongoing construction activity rather than take on new projects, sources said. “The Authority would like to boost our revenues. We plan to approach the Government seeking that more flights be allowed to operate to the airports where work will be completed,” sources said.

AAI is also examining the possibility of offering sops to airlines like waiving charges for night parking of aircraft at some of these airports so as to attract more airlines. “With passenger traffic reviving we are hoping that these steps will help boot our revenues,” a senior official said.

The airport operator has also approached the Government seeking permission to levy user development fee at six airports where development work has been completed. These include Tiruchi, Vizag, Mangalore, Udaipur and Amritsar.

Well, it seems Trichy airport expansion programmes is for real, and that AAI truly understands the potential of Trichy, despite some domestic political obstacles being harnessed by the hardcores.:bash::bash::bash:

TIRUCHI: Service lanes are likely to be laid on the city stretches of the Tiruchi-Thanjavur National Highway (NH-67), which is currently being expanded into a four-lane highway by the National Highways Authority of India, following the intervention of Transport Minister K.N.Nehru.

Mr.Nehru has instructed the district administration to initiate steps for acquiring the necessary land for laying the service lanes between Ariyamangalam Palpannai and Thuvakudi, a 14.5-km stretch on the outskirts of the city.

Though the NHAI usually provides service lanes on either side of the highways that are being four-laned, the Tiruchi-Thanjavur Highway was being laid without service lanes along the urban stretches, provoking an angry reaction from residents of Tiruverambur region.

Service lanes could not be laid owing to non-availability of lands in the highway stretch in Tiruchi district. An initial proposal for land acquisition on urban stretch of the highway in the district, between Ariyamangalam and Thuvakudi, was dropped owing to stiff opposition from local traders.

he road stretch runs along the most industrialised segment of the district and is highly urbanised, with a large number of shops, industrial units and residential colonies.

The 56-km stretch of the highway is being four-laned at a cost of about Rs.280 crore on build-operate-transfer basis.

Pointing out that the absence of service lanes would put local residents and motorists to high risk, residents of several colonies along the highway have come together to launch a campaign to mobilise public support in favour of laying service lanes which were mandatory as per NHAI rules.

Land to be acquired
Taking cognisance of the simmering discontent among the people, Mr.Nehru on Monday convened a meeting with officials of the district administration and the NHAI to discuss the issue. With land already being available for a stretch of about four km, Mr.Nehru instructed the district officials to initiate steps to acquire the required lands for the remaining 10 km. The estimates for the acquisition would be prepared and forwarded to the Centre through the State Government, Mr.Nehru said.

He assured to get in touch with Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways to get the clearance for laying the service lanes. He requested the NHAI officials to draw up proposals for laying the service lanes and for construction of drainages on both sides of the highway. He appealed to the residents to extend their full cooperation to the authorities in completing the project at the earliest.

T.Soundiah, Collector; K.N.Sekaran, Tiruverambur MLA; V.Dakshinamurthy, District Revenue Officer; A.Athipathi, Project Director, NHAI, Thanjavur; M.Meenakshi, Project Director, NHAI, Tiruchi; S.Sujatha, Mayor; T.T.Balsamy, Corporation Commissioner; and other officials attended the meeting.

Later Mr.Soundiah briefed representatives of the Federation of Ellakudi Townships Welfare Association, which has been spearheading the campaign seeking service lanes along the highway, on the decisions taken at the meeting convened by Mr.Nehru.

we appreciate ur comments, but we are little sad that, the people in the blog still live in 2000.

We would like to update each and everyone of this blog about the initiatives taken by CII and industry for the development of Trichy and the districts in and around. We would also appreciate if you people could identify yourself and if interested join us in the intiative of Developing Central Tamil Nadu, HUB Trichy. We also welcome your comments in ciitrichyzone@cii.in.

Madurai and Coimbatore was possible also because of the support from the people from respective regions, which we lack in trichy completely. Only Industry and CII cannot bring changes when the sons and daughters of the soil move out of the city and work for companies elsewhere.

Action is back in boiler town Trichy. After textile-city Coimbatore, the boiler capital of Tamil Nadu boasts of an infrastructure that is attracting
IT companies, contributing to the changing realtyscape. Even IT body Nasscom is going the whole hog to promote it as an ITES destination.

At a recent Nasscom-organised event—Empower IT—an official of IT-enabled services and BPO MNC Sutherland said cost compulsions and manpower capability were driving IT companies to tier II locations. Trichy, with its ready-made talent pool and a decent infrastructure, is proving an ideal destination to do business. Until recently, conservative Trichy was not offering too many employment opportunities. Even salaries were moderate.

However, unlike the metros, the fourth largest city in Tamil Nadu has not seen any price fluctuation in the residential segment, says Prative Chend, CEO of AICTE-approved CARE, the country’s first integrated educational campus. “Prices may have been stagnant but they have definitely not dipped. The volume of transactions too has been average,” he said.

Akshaya Homes chairman T Chitty Babu says he is preparing a blueprint for a 10-acre joint development activity. “We are still in the early stage of planning. We feel the market is good as it offers tremendous scope for organised real estate development,” he said.

Top-notch realty players include Rohini Housing, Vignesh Flat Promoter, Manghalam Estates and Ganesh Builders. The Maris Group and Rams Builders of Chennai are also promoting a multi-storied residential complex on Convent Road, likely to be the tallest in Trichy.

Apart from being dotted with engineering institutions that provide qualified personnel, the city has an international airport. Incidentally, 30-35 of the top engineering colleges operate in and around Trichy and not to
forget the famed Bharathidasan Institute of Management.

HDFC senior GM Mathew Joseph says the lending portfolio has been “pretty good”, thanks to the presence of PSU Bharat Heavy Electricals. “The
engineering base, employment profile and the fact that the country’s top B-school IIM is going to have a base here, have all made a marked difference to the realtyscape,” he added.

On the commercial side, the retail segment has been quite active with retailers (More, Reliance) opening new outlets on Shastri Road. Reliance is scheduled to open its hypermarket on Bharatidasan Road and Vasan Eye Care Clinic in Thillai Nagar. Lease rentals range from Rs 25–30 per sq ft in Bharatidasan Road and in Thillai Nagar up to Rs 60 per sq ft per month, Mr Sanjay Chugh of Skylines, a property consulting firm in Chennai, told ET.

Terming the market as non-volatile and an “end users” one, he said the office market too has witnessed few transactions in Shastri Nagar of Dhanalakshmi Bank and Etisalat Telecom in Shastri Road. A sizeable English-speaking population, high loyalty and competitive manpower costs are influencing businesses to seriously evaluate Trichy.

The state too has been promoting the location by showing willingness to allot smaller land parcels. “Even if you want 1 acre space in the same location, we are willing,” is how Tamil Nadu IT minister Poongothai Aladi Aruna pitches for tier II destinations.

TIRUCHI: Anna University – Tiruchi (AU-T) will be the first in the country to test Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) technology of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL).

The university intends to utilise the technology on virtual private network platform for networking with its seven constituent colleges located hundreds of kilometres away, in a week.

Disclosing this on Tuesday, Vice-Chancellor V. Ramachandran said the new technology which provided for Wi-Fi connectivity in all campuses of the university would serve the purpose of facilitating transmission of e-learning materials from the main centre and reaching out to all units through video sessions, thereby helping in optimising teaching resources. The option of free two-way telephonic communication would also be exercised, utilising the dedicated optical fibre cable lines laid to the constituent units.

Self-financing affiliated colleges could also benefit from the technology and integrate themselves into the ‘Internet Cloud’ by conforming to the simple procedure of fulfilling formalities connected with furnishing the Internet Protocol number of their respective service providers. The new technology would be in place before Pongal, he said.

Central railway workshops asked to increase productivity

Tiruchirappalli (TN), Jan 11 : The Central Railway workshops should increase their productivity and reduce cost of production to get better share of orders for wagons from Container Corporation of India Ltd (Concor), V.Carmelus, Chief Mechanical Engineer, Southern Railway, said.

Flagging off the 25th Rake of Low Bogie Containers (LBC), he said though the state-owned Concor was buying 30,000 wagons every year, the four railway workshops got orders for only 2,000 wagons.

TIRUCHI: D. Napoleon, Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, on Monday inspected the unmanned level crossings in a few places on the Tiruchi – Chennai ‘chord’ line in his Perambalur constituency and held discussion with the railway authorities on converting them into manned level crossings and constructing sub-way to mitigate the sufferings of the local people.

The inspection was following the representations made by the people of various villages on the difficulties faced by them due to the presence of unmanned level crossing and pleading for remedial actions.

Mr. Napoleon inspected the unmanned level crossings at Melavaladi, T. Valavanur and Angarai. The people of T. Valavanur explained that more than 1,000 people reside in the village and they have to cross the railway track using the unmanned level crossing. This caused much hardship to office goers, daily wage earners, school students and women. When the trains are halted for a long time on the manned level crossing for signal, it further hampered the movement of the people. They pleaded for a sub-way here.

The locals of Angarai too demanded construction of sub-way to replace the unmanned level crossing.

The Minister requested K. Rajarajan, Senior Divisional Engineer / North, Tiruchi Railway Division, and other officials who accompanied him, to study the feasibility of converting the unmanned level crossing into manned one at Melavaladi and constructing sub-ways at T. Valavanur and Angarai. According to railway sources, the Railways has accepted in principle to convert the unmanned level crossing at Melavaladi into a manned one.

Bridge widening

Later, Mr. Napoleon inspected the small bridge across a local stream in Nathamangudi Vettuvari village, which the people wanted to be widened. The people were pleading for steps for laying a tar road from Vaipur to Pallividai village in Madappuli panchayat, from Maruthi Nagar to Bikshandarkoil railway station and proper road facilities in Tirumalai nagar, Indira nagar, etc. The Minister inspected all these areas and listened to the grievances of the people.

Revenue and highway officials, S. Jayachandran, Valadi Panchayat president, and others accompanied the Minister.

Plea to speed up service lane process

TIRUCHI: The Federation of Ellakudi Townships Welfare Associations has appealed to the district authorities to initiate the process of laying service lanes between Ariyamangalam and Thuvakudi along the Tiruchi-Thanjavur National Highway at the earliest.

A resolution adopted at a meeting of the association members here on Sunday, welcomed the recent announcement by the district administration that steps would be taken to lay service lanes along the highway following the popular demand.

However, the process should be expedited, the resolution said and the work should be commenced within a month.

The service lanes were essential to prevent accidents and fatalities.

The meeting also resolved to form a federation, comprising representatives from various residents welfare associations and service organisations, to follow up and monitor the process of laying service lanes.

The resolution also expressed gratitude to K.N.Nehru, Transport Minister, P.Kumar, MP, and K.N.Sekaran, MLA, who have taken steps to get the service lanes sanctioned.
