deepu051993 July 19th, 2011, 03:36 PM TIRUCHY: The stench of land and property grab scams has reached the higher echelons of the DMK with a businessmen from Namakkal on Monday alleging DMK strongman K N Nehru’s hand in evicting him out of his property. The complainant, Dr K Kathirvel, claimed to have documentary evidence to prove the former minister’s link to his case.
Addressing the media after lodging a complaint with the Commissioner of Police here, he said five persons including Nehru, his brother,Ramajayam, and Deputy Mayor M Anbalagan, forced him to part with his hotel valued at Rs 15 crore.
While reportedly purchasing Hotel Kanjana Towers in December 2005, Kathirvel had drawn up an agreement on its purchase with partners Guru Sankara Narayanan,Gayathri Devi, Subbu Lakshmni and Natchiyar.
A total of Rs 65 lakh was handed over to the owners, and the balance payment was to be settled through monthly instalments, in addition to closing a bank loan of Rs 6 crore. “To start the hotel business, I spent Rs 1.5 crore to renovate the building, and it did well after the revamp,” Kathirvel said. However, in 2007, a group of men, with the support of then Inspector of police, Cantonment, Swaminathan, asked him to vacate the hotel claiming that the owners had sealed the deal with one Ranganathan before Kathirvel came into the picture. “Thereafter, I was often threatened of dire consequences by former minister Nehru and his brother, Ramajayam, to hand over the property to the Ranganathan group,” alleged Kathirvel. Subsequently, he lodged a complaint with then Cantonment police inspector Swaminathan against the duo on December 22, 2007. But the police sat on his complaint. “The day after I filed the complaint, a gang of about 100 men with lethal weapons, led by Deputy Mayor M Anbalagan and Ranganathan, entered the hotel and assaulted me. They also forcibly evicted me out of the hotel and took it under their possession,” he said. He also claimed that the former minister had directed the police to register a case against him on the ground that the businessman had threatened the owners and usurped their hotel. “A case was registered against me and they arranged a publication of a news report that the police were searching for a Namakkal doctor,” he said. He went on to add that the change of guard in the State had emboldened him to file a fresh complaint. Police Commissioner E Ma Masanamuthu has ordered a probe.

Two more colleges on Trichy-Dindugal highway. I guess there are Five Engg colleges and the Anbil agriculture college in this road.
Hope Trichy-Karur road (upto Pettavaithalai) is also developed which comes under CM constituency.
This dindugal highway is also becoming the hub of automobile showrooms. tata, ford, Volkswagen, skoda, maruthi true value, mahindra, one near RMS bus stop are all situated along the 3 kms stretch from aristo till piratiyur. RTO office is situated at pirattiyur. silently this stretch is becoming an active suburb of the city. Unlike other highways, the road from aristo till piratiyur is very narrow and pathetic.Corporation should broaden this stretch with median on the road. It is even worse on the trichy-karur highway.

Prolonged hope for an Information Technology park in Tiruchi finally took shape late last year. After the launch of the IT Park on an area of 147 acre at Navalpattu during December 2010, three companies so far: Assyst International, i-Link Software Services Limited, and Seventh Sense Technologies Limited, are in the process of occupying portions of the built-up space of about 50,000 square feet constructed by ELCOT (Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu) in the IT Park on the outskirts. The built up area constructed at a cost of Rs.14.5 crore has been envisaged to serve as an incubation centre. More companies, including Scientific Publishing Services, OKS Pre Press Services, and Integra Software Services, have also evinced interest in operating from here. The ELCOT has made in-principle allotment orders for land in the Special Economic Zone area to ten companies. For the smaller companies, operating from Tier-II and Tier-III cities makes business sense since operational costs could be cut down and attrition could be lowered, in a not so encouraging economic scenario in the Western countries. On its part, the State government has also tweaked the eligibility criteria for smaller companies to start their units. When it is fully operational with sufficient number of small and large companies, the IT Park is planned to accommodate 20,000 employees and provide indirect employment to 40,000 people. The total investment is expected to be in the range of Rs.800 crore at the end of five years. Syntel, a global provider of Information Technology and Knowledge Process Outsourcing solutions with global development centres in India and the United States, explored an option to have its centre in the Navalpattu IT Park. The ELCOT was prepared to offer 25 acres. However, since the company's requirement was huge, the ELCOT provided Syntel with 100 acres in the Tirunelveli IT Park. Nevertheless, the IT Park could attract WNS Global Services, a New York Stock Exchange - listed business outsourcing player. The multi-national company, a leading player in BPO, would also possibly be allotted space in the built up area. WNS is believed to be impressed with the calibre of human resource in the region. The visible shortcoming that remains is the stagnation in the initiative taken for re-laying of the 100 feet road that links the IT Park with the Tiruchi-Pudukkottai Highway. The proposal is still said to be pending with the Government. The road has been transferred from the Department of Rural Development to the State Highways. However, funds have not been sanctioned as yet, it is learnt. An impetus will be accorded after the preparatory work pertaining to supply of laptops to students is completed, official sources said, informing that the IT Minister R.B.Udayakumar will visit the IT Park some time during the next few months to take part in a road show and popularise Tiruchi further as a favourable IT destination projecting its locational advantage, and road, rail and air connectivity.

ANANTH July 21st, 2011, 06:32 AM Although the commissioning of a modern terminal at the Tiruchi airport a couple of years ago marked a major leap forward, the surprisingly poor air connectivity to domestic destinations from the city continues to disappoint the industry, especially the travel trade.
While there has been an increase in the number of flights operated to foreign destinations from the city, there has not been much improvement in domestic connectivity. Travel industry representatives feel that it is time that city got connections to major domestic destinations such as New Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Kolkata.
Presently, the airport is handling Air India Express flights to Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Abu Dhabi, Dubai; Sri Lankan Airlines flights to Colombo, Air Asia flights to Kuala Lumpur, Tiger Airways to Singapore and Mihin Lanka flights to Colombo. More flights to some of these and other foreign destinations are also in the offing.
On the other hand, there is very little interest shown by the airlines to operate flights to domestic destinations from Tiruchi. Except Chennai, which is connected by Air India Express, Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines, and a single weekly flight to Mumbai, no other city is connected with Tiruchi.
Air operators contend that Tiruchi offers higher scope for attracting ethnic traffic from the central districts to foreign destinations. But patronage for domestic services has not been very encouraging, they say citing the discontinuation of services to Bangalore. Simplyfly Deccan, part of the UB group's Kingfisher Airlines, which had introduced flights on the Bangalore-Tiruchi-Bangalore sector had suspended it in June 2008. That was for the second time that the Bangalore-Tiruchi-Bangalore flights were withdrawn. Previously, Kingfisher Airlines had introduced flights on the sector in January 2007 only to withdraw it by October the same year. The excellent rail and road connectivity enjoyed by the city is cited as one of the factors for the hesitation of air operators to come up with domestic flights.
But travel agents point out that the lone weekly flight to Mumbai by Air India Express was attracting consistent load factor, despite the absence of a convenient return flight. They point out that Madurai and Coimbatore have been well connected domestically, though they may handle fewer flights to foreign destinations.
Sluggish growth
Industry representatives observe that the poor domestic air connectivity was one of the reasons for the sluggish industrial growth including the development of the IT Park in the city. Air links to Bangalore, Mumbai and New Delhi were essential for the city's growth, it was contended. Some of the agents feel that air operators could get a good load factor by linking domestic destinations to their international flights operating out of Tiruchi.
Tiruchi, agents say, could be made as the alternative airport to Chennai and bemoan the absence of an effective lobby to project the city's requirements. During 2010-11, there were 5,084 flight movements from Tiruchi as against 4,831 in 2009-2010, which indicates a steady growth of the airport.
On an average the airport handles 1050 international passengers and 210 domestic passengers per day, they point and say passenger movement was bound to increase further if only there were more flights to domestic destinations.

isham_9626 July 21st, 2011, 05:35 PM The Air Cargo Complex at Tiruchi airport will commence operations from the second week of September, according to S. Dharmaraj, Airport Director.
The AAI will call for tenders and work on modification of old terminal building for cargo operations is expected to start in the last week of this month. After completion of the work, the area will be inspected and notified by the Commissioner of Customs. Cargo operations will commence once Customs Custodianship is granted, Mr. Dharmaraj told press persons on Wednesday.
At present, a monthly average of 300 tonnes of perishable products, fruits, flowers and vegetables, were being exported from Tiruchi Airport to countries in the South East and Middle East, he said, projecting potential to increase handling capacity to 2,000 metric tonnes per month in two year's time.
Mr. Dharmaraj also informed that 64 CCTV (Closed Circuit Television) surveillance cameras installed from city side to the air side would be put to operation from this month-end. To a query, he said the new Air Traffic Control Tower and a technical block have been planned on the acquired land that the State Government would hand over for airport expansion.
For the winter schedule starting from October 28, Spice jet has applied for ‘18.00 hrs arrival and 18.30 hrs departure slot' to operate on the Chennai-Tiruchi-Chennai sector, and Kingfisher airlines has applied for ‘20.05 hrs arrival and 20.30 hrs departure slot' on the Bangalore-Tiruchi-Bangalore sector. The applications were subject to DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) regulations.
Tiger Airways that now operates daily flights would increase its frequency of operation to 11 flights per week from September 5. The frequency would go up further to 14 flights per month in the winter schedule, Mr. Dharmaraj said.

isham_9626 July 21st, 2011, 05:37 PM The fire station in Tiruchi Airport will be upgraded from category ‘7' to category ‘9' for handling wide bodied aircrafts once the runway is expanded, D.Devaraj, Regional Executive Director, Southern Region, Airports Authority of India, said on Wednesday.
The State government was keen to hand over acquired land for the runway extension.
The buildings could be expanded under modular concept, Mr.Devaraj said, conferring ‘Best Fire Station Award' to the fire station team in the Tiruchi Airport. The Tiruchi Airport bagged the runner-up trophy ceding the top position to Mangalore Airport among ‘B' category airports.
Unveiling a plan for additional counters in Tiruchi Airport, he said a few airlines have evinced interest in launching operations.
Tiruchi Airport will be brought into the radar network along with the Tiruvananthapuram, Hyderabad and Mangalore airports for seamless surveillance.
Operation in the ‘shadow mode' will be conducted on August 15, he said, informing that the radar network system was unique in southern region. Equipment was ready for tower automation in small airports, he said.
The master plan for flight management based on GAGAN (GPS aided Geo augmented navigation) in coordination with Indian Space Research Organisation was in final phase.
It will make possible seamless navigation through GPS (Global Positioning System) and pave way for direct routing of airlines. Further development of Tiruchi airport hinges on additional land availability, Mr.Devaraj said.
Presiding over K.V.Murali, General Manager (Aero), Southern Region, AAI, Chennai, said there was scope for Tiruchi airport to attain the first position by improving performance, knowledge, skills and attitudes.
Referring to the profession of fire staff as challenging, he said they make a difference between life and death for many in critical situations. He emphasised on how a sense of commitment could lead to achievement in all spheres.
Mr.Murali and Mr.Gajpe, Joint General Manager (Aero), Southern Region, AAI, Chennai, joined Mr.Devaraj in honouring the fire station team with trophy and certificates.
S.Dharmaraj, Airport Director, said the Tiruchi Airport has done well to achieve the runner up position among category B stations, and would work for attaining the first spot next year.

bajk July 22nd, 2011, 06:38 AM Work on establishing Rail Heritage Centre here had begun, Deepak Kishan, General Manager, Southern Railway, said on Thursday.
“The Rs. 2-crore work is expected to be completed in one-and-a-half years. The outlay for this year is one crore rupees. Another centre may be established in Ernakulam or Thiruvananthapuram,” Mr. Deepak said in an informal interaction with mediapersons. Southern Railway had most interesting aspects in terms of history, he said, adding that the tasks of identifying exhibits, finding their history and labelling would be carried out.
“The old station building of Tiruchi, dating back to 1889, that still exists in original shape is to be restored to its original splendour to serve as office and ticket sales counter of the heritage centre,” according to a Southern Railway pamphlet. The proposed heritage centre provides for 500 square metre of space for indoor exhibits; picture gallery of rare pictures and maps; clock gallery of vintage clocks; lamps, signals and accessories galleries; study room for railway historical research; philately on railway themes; rare documents, books and publications; and publications digitising facility for archival storage.
The outdoor exhibits would encompass a toy train; a gallery of steam locomotives; a gallery of old diesel and electric locomotives; old stem cranes; vintage coaches and wagons; a vintage coach as a restaurant car; a rock garden; an ornamental fish pond; murals; and a mini auditorium for animated display. The museum will be situated very close to the railway station, the pamphlet states.

bajk July 22nd, 2011, 06:49 AM BHEL, Trichy plans to create additional facilities through Railways and the new Karaikal port for speedy transportation of energy equipment and boiler components this year in view of the cost advantage and the difficulties in getting truck trailers for movement via roads. This approach is also in tune with its plan to have uniform production throughout the year instead of rushing it in the last quarter.
ED, A V Krishnan said in Chennai on Thursday, with copious orders on hand, Trichy complex is poised to achieve a 30% increase in turnover at Rs 16,000 crore this fiscal against Rs 12,275 crore in 2010-11. Boiler components production is also expected to peak 8.50 lakh tonnes against six lakh tonnes last year. He said 40% of the production is to be achieved in the first half and the rest in the second half of current year.
The corporation has tied up with Railways for using the vacant yard (developed jointly with NTPC) at Shakthinagar in Uttar Pradesh. As it has agreed to the condition of Railways for using 40 rakes, BHEL will be issued a green pass to take the supply from Trichy to the yard without delay. This will help it to move 3000 tonnes in six days ( against 20 days taken by trucks)to five power plant sites in UP and Madhya Pradesh. It will come to one third of the cost for movement by road.
Mr Krishnan said it is looking at creating similar facilities for catering to customers in other parts of the country. BHEL is also discussing with Karaikal Port for shipping its supplies to Haldia and Paradip ports. It is equally looking at more than doubling production of components at 3 lakh tonnes ( against 1.25 lakh tonnes) through away centre fabrication units.
He said Trichy complex is gearing up to augment capacity in phase 3 from 10,000 mw to 15,000 mw by March next year at a cost of Rs 280 crore. It also hopes to commission the piping unit at Thirumayam by December at a cost of Rs 386 crore. Regarding the progress on the corporate strategic plan beyond 2012, he said it is getting delayed due to some uncertainties like gas pricing, availability of coal and lack of clarity in the case of nuclear plants.

bajk July 22nd, 2011, 01:49 PM As a prototype of remanufactured WDS6 (Wide Diesel Shunter 6) locomotive on WDM2 (Wide Diesel Mixed 2) chassis chugged out on Thursday, Golden Rock (GOC) Workshop here crossed yet another milestone in rolling stocks delivery.
The Broad Gauge loco was remanufactured with Meter Gauge power pack and electrics on the chassis of WDM2, the most common diesel locomotive of Indian Railways used for both goods and passenger service.
The Railway Board had, under its Rolling Stock Programme (RSP), placed an order on GOC for remanufacturing 20 WDS6 locos (on WDM2 chassis) for Indian Railway requirement.
Deepak Krishan, General Manager, Southern Railway, flagged off the prototype loco, in addition to three Meter Gauge in-service locos manufactured for Myanmar and one more remanufactured WDS6 for RITES (Rail India Technical and Economic Services) in the presence of S.K.Sood, Chief Mechanical Engineer, Southern Railway, and other dignitaries of Southern Railway Headquarters.
An agency functioning under the Ministry of Indian Railways, RITES has tapped the market potential for diesel electric shunting locos. The GOC exports locomotives and carriages through RITES. It has so far rehabilitated and exported 126 MG locomotives to countries like Sudan, Mozambique, Mali, Malaysia, Tanzania, and Senegal besides Myanmar.
The three MG in-service locos made for Myanmar feature ergonomically designed sleek type control stands, stainless steel perforated roof sheets, LED (Light-emitting diodes) type lamp, roof mounted cabin fan, twin beam head lights for better luminosity and visibility, and PU (Polyurethane) painting on exterior surface and control cabin.
For remanufacturing the prototype WDS6 locomotive on WDM2 chassis, electrical accessories and power packs released from YDM4 (Meter Gauge) locos were used. Accessories befitting a BG locomotive were fitted to the loco.
The WDS6 loco remanufactured for RITES was made using MG power pack with BHEL generator, auxiliaries and electric controls released from six MG locos.
It is a heavy haul shunter (rated at 1200/1350 horsepower) used in industrial concerns for which new floor frame and hood assemblies supplied by RITES have been used.
According to the GOC, all the six WDS6 locos it had supplied for RITES have been working satisfactorily in the past two years. The GOC had, since 1995, carried out periodic overhaul of 251 WDS6 locomotives used in Public Sector Units.
Mr. Deepak also inspected the facilities of intermediate overhauling of carriage bogies, and the construction of prototype BTFLN wagon, a new and special type of stainless steel wagon.
After the prototype is cleared, GOC workshop will construct 49 more wagons under Railway Board Rolling Stock Programme.

deepu051993 July 25th, 2011, 04:41 PM Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, Tiruchi, has been vested with the responsibility of executing the new power equipment fabrication plant at Latur in Maharashtra. The Board of BHEL had approved the proposal for the plant late last year. However, whether or not the new unit will be attached to the Tiruchi Complex will depend on the products to be manufactured by the new unit. The BHEL, Tiruchi Complex.
resently consists of the Heavy Pressure Boiler Plant and Seamless Steel Tube Plant (SSTP) in Tiruchi, Piping Centre in Chennai and Industrial Valves Plant at Goindwal in Punjab. The Ranipet Unit was also a part of Tiruchi Complex till over five years ago. The Tiruchi Complex alone accounts for 30 per cent of the output of the entire BHEL Corporation comprising a total of 15 manufacturing units.
Alongside augmenting the capacity of the Goindwal plant to 3,200 metric tonnes a year, the BHEL,Tiruchi Complex, has also a plan to enhance output from SSTP from 35,000 to 85,000 tonnes.

Call it a storage point or tiny pool of health woes, sewage starts gushing into the ground of E.R.Higher Secondary School from the adjoining Pudhu street at 7 a.m daily.
The discharge reaches its peak around 8 a.m. and slowly recedes at 8.30 a.m. Students have to attend classes come hell or high water. unmindful of the hazards while school administration or Corporation is yet to wake up on the matter.
Though some leaks in the drainage lines have resulted in the diversion flow into the school premises, the prevalence of problem even after six months exposes the gross negligence of authorities, say students. This is despite the inspection of education department officials in the recent past. What worries the school management more is the question over renewal of sanitation certificate to be issued by the Corporation health officials.
Pudhu Street with about 1,000 houses is a narrow lane branching off from the main road near the compound of the school. A cross-section of residents says the sewage from the entire area, as per the drainage plan, is to reach the main road near Chinthamani.
The city Corporation and the school management should set it right before this stinking trouble swallows up the students as well as teachers, they feel. The drainage lines on the Pudhu Street are at a higher level than the school compound. “A row of drinking water taps near the water stagnation poses a serious threat to health as students have to reach the taps after crossing it,” say many teachers.
Decades ago, the school management had set up an underground tank in the ground to store the Cauvery water. The tank in turn supplies water into those taps. Parents complain that their wards developed some ailments because of the stagnation of the sewage water on the school campus.

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa inaugurated on Monday the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University’s Horticultural College and Research Institute for Women was inaugurated by the Chief Minister Jayalalithaa through a video conference session on Monday.
The college with an intake of 36 students, including eight selected through the Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) through an all-India selection process, aims at promoting horticultural cultivation and research. The college is temporarily located in the TNAU-Anbil Dharmalingam Agricultural College and Research Institute and the State government had sanctioned Rs.10 crore for buildings and other infrastructure.
Speaking after inaugurating the college, Ms. Jayalalithaa said she laid the foundation for the institute during the course of her camp in Tiruchi on June 19. She appealed to students to work hard to achieve their educational career and register an overall growth in their life.
Jayashree Muralidaran, District Collector, said that the college would be yet another milestone in Tiruchi district which was widely famous for a variety of heritage and cultural features including Srirangam. The college would help the mango, plantain and betel growers in the district in a big way and would strengthen the cause of the State government’s plan for stepping up agricultural productivity, she said.
P. Kumar, MP from Tiruchi, said that the Srirangam Assembly constituency, which returned her to power, ranked first in terms of development and growth in the State. In this context, he referred to the short span of time between laying the foundation for the college last month and its starting today.
A student G. Kavinila, hailing from a banana cultivator family in Arumbavur in neighbouring Perambalur district, termed the college as a great opportunity for her educational career. Though her ambition was to join horticultural college, she could not afford to stay in Coimbatore disitrict. “The college is being started at a time when I turned almost desperate unable to apply at Periyakulam,” she said, assuring the Chief Minister that she would work hard in the cause of green revolution.
Earlier, Ministers K.A. Sengottiyan; N.R. Sivapathi and Velumany, received the Chief Minister. Debendranath Sarangi, Chief Secretary was present.

Debendranath Sarangi, Chief Secretary was present.
kg4129 July 26th, 2011, 05:18 AM Chennai, July 25Karaikal port: With demands on its plant estimated to exceed 8.5 lakh tonnes of steel this year, BHEL's Tiruchi unit, which producers boilers for thermal power plants, has come up with a plan to go multi-modal, in order to bring down logistics costs and time.
Basically, it intends to make a much larger use of rail and sea.
For starters, BHEL has hired a “big yard” at Sakthinagar, Uttar Pradesh, to which it will send most of the boiler equipment meant for customers in that part of the country.
The advantage is that a 40-rake train will take 3,500 tonnes of material from Tiruchi to Sakthinagar, non-stop, in about six days. At the yard, the cargo will be loaded on to trucks and moved to the sites.
This will take half the time and a third of the cost than otherwise, Mr A.V. Krishnan, Executive Director, BHEL, Tiruchi, told journalists here recently.
A 40-rake load of material will replace 170 trailers, he said.
BHEL wants “eight-nine more such yards”, Mr Krishnan said.
Similarly, BHEL intends to make a larger use of the two-year-old Karaikal port, which is only 140 km away from its plant. Tiruchi to Karaikal, thence by barge to Paradip or Haldia, and further on to customers in the Eastern region – will be the route.
BHEL is talking to Marg Ltd, the owner of Karaikal port, to develop a four-lane road between Tiruchi and the port, Mr Krishnan said.
Meanwhile, the Rs 660-crore expansion project (Phase-III), which will take the Tiruchi unit's capacity from 10,000 MW to 15,000 MW (worth of boilers), will be completed by December.

bajk July 26th, 2011, 04:47 PM Deeming use of advanced materials and improved processes in fabrication of structures as pre-requisites for reduction in cycle time of delivery in the competitive scenario, the Welding Research Institute (WRI), BHEL, Tiruchi, and the Indian Welding Society (IWS), Southern Zone, joined hands to take along business partners on an expansion path through a two-day international conference.
The two-day conference on ‘Fabrication of Structurals – Emerging Trends' that got off to a start on Monday has been designed to highlight new dimensions to improve sturdiness of the product among sub-contractors to whom BHEL outsources fabrication of structures in high volumes – on an average, 12,000 tonnes of materials have to be fabricated for a 500 MW power plant.
During this fiscal, outsourcing of structural fabrication by BHEL, Tiruchi, will be close to 4.8 lakh tonnes, in equal proportion to local vendors and away centre fabricators. Next year, the volume will go up to 6.2 lakh tonnes, A.V.Krishnan, Executive Director, BHEL, Tiruchi, said, inaugurating the conference. Emphasising on the importance of processes to ensure quality, Mr.Krishnan advised business partners to enhance performance by adopting good manufacturing practices through skill-development trainings, and development of facilities.
He advised sub-contractors to invest time, effort and money and keep pace with the parent company.

ajnath July 27th, 2011, 05:58 AM Paucity of space puts commuters in a spot
Presence of multi-storeyed two wheeler parking lots at the Tiruchi Railway Junction and the Central bus stand notwithstanding, the ever increasing volumes of vehicles have rendered them grossly insufficient.
Vehicles virtually occupy every inch of these parking lots round-the-clock, causing discomfiture to regular commuters from distant places who use two wheelers to reach the junction and the bus stand.
On some occasions, the parking lot at the central bus stand overflows with vehicles and the gates are closed, much to the shock of the travelling public.
There is an urgent need for the construction of more spacious multi-storeyed parking lots in both these places with immediate effect, feels a cross section of the local residents.
The present multi-storeyed parking lots could occupy only a limited number of two-wheelers.
A majority of the two-wheelers are parked on the open space surrounding these parking lots. Not only are the vehicles exposed to hot sun and rain, their safety and security is also a big question mark.
During the peak hours, the two wheeler owners arriving at Junction and central bus stand in their vehicles find it difficult to find even a little space to park their vehicles. On some occasions, they even miss the train or bus due to the time it takes to park the vehicles.
The parking lot at Central Bus Stand was constructed only recently. The Corporation recently expanded the bus stand by acquiring adequate adjacent land from the Railways.
The Corporation should have thought of constructing yet another multi-storeyed parking lot in the bus stand taking into consideration the demand for holding more vehicles. There is adequate space for this, says S.Ilyas, a college student.
Even now, the Corporation should not delay this move. It should take steps for the construction of yet another parking lot near the bays marked for the parking of buses proceeding to Salem, Karur, he adds.
For any train commuter, Tiruchi railway junction is a full-fledged destination in terms of passenger amenities, comfort and infrastructure facilities.
The Railway Ministry, understanding the importance of the junction, has always been according priority for the creation of additional facilities.
The Railways has taken up a major project of setting up an additional entry at the Tiruchi junction. The project included construction of separate parking lots to accommodate 225 cars, 80 autorickshaws, 850 two-wheelers and 150 bicycles. This will ease the congestion in the two wheeler parking lot, says a senior railway official.
But commuters are of the view that taking into the account the growing traffic scenario, the proposed parking lots, in particular the two-wheeler parking area, will be inadequate.
Thousands of two-wheelers arrive at the Junction and the parking lot to accommodate just 850 two-wheelers will not help to ease the situation, they say.

bajk July 27th, 2011, 02:02 PM VASAN Healthcare has almost closed a private equity deal of around $100 million from Singapore's sovereign fund GIC. The company, which wants to raise a total $150 million through pre-IPO placement, is also in talks with a few other private equity firms, including Warburg Pincus, for the remaining funds.
According to a person, privy to the development, GIC is expected to make the investment in tranches. The fast-growing daycare services company had an early stage funding of $50 million from Sequoia Capital India. The pre-IPO placement will be used to fund the company's growth plans till March 2012.
Vasan Healthcare has chalked out a fast and aggressive growth plan, which includes taking the number of eye care clinics from 80 to 125 and dental centres from 12 to 25 before September this year.
Before March 2013, the number of centres will be doubled to 250 and 50 respectively, AM Arun, chairman of Vasan Healthcare had told Financial Chronicle recently. The company is also launching other daycare specialties like skin-care, in-vitro fertilization, urology and diabetes care.
Vasan also wants to hit the primary market at a later stage. The company wanted to raise a total of Rs 800 crore for its capital requirement and after the pre-IPO placement, it will take a call on the stake dilution through IPO at a later stage.
The company, which started from a small medical shop at Trichy in Tamil Nadu, took to aggressive expansion in 2002 by opening an eye care clinic. In 2007, it acquired Prem's Eye clinic and entered Chennai.

bajk July 27th, 2011, 03:12 PM A precarious situation arising from dwindling number of welders and the need for power sector to consider the tasks of welding pressure part consumables and structurals on an even keel were the main talking points at the valedictory session of the two-day international conference on ‘Fabrication of Structurals – Emerging Trends' (FASET) organised jointly by the Welding Research Institute, BHEL, Tiruchi, and the Indian Welding Society (IWS).
Emphasising on pre-eminence of welders in the power sector, speakers expressed concern over the continuous decrease in the number of professionals. Welding engineers were proportionately lesser when compared to the large volume of steel that needs to be fabricated in the power sector, D.S.Honavar, Chairman, Honavar Electrodes, Thane, said, calling for training of youngsters in large numbers.
Disheartening
Presiding over, B.Pattabhiraman, Past President of IWS and Managing Director, GB Resurgent Group felt the scenario of diminishing applications for welding programmes in Industrial Training Institutions was disheartening. There was a huge demand for welders in Japan, which, he said, was recruiting large number of welding professionals from other Asian countries, particularly from India.
Mr. Pattabhiraman observed that structurals have not been given their due importance so far, and that the conference has facilitated industries to know more about designing safe, light, and easy to manufacture and erect structurals using new equipment.

ajnath July 29th, 2011, 06:14 AM Plans afoot to extend sewer network
The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board has prepared a detailed project report for an underground sewerage scheme (UGSS) for the omitted areas in Srirangam and Thiruvanaikoval in the city.
The project would form the phase I of the UGSS proposed for the omitted areas in Tiruchi city. The TWAD Board was engaged in preparing detailed project reports (DPRs) for extending underground sewer network to all omitted areas in the city. The project is to be taken up in three phases. About 60 TWAD Board engineers have been deputed to prepare the DPRs and work was underway on preparing the DPRs for the other two phases.
Phase I of the scheme would be executed to cover the omitted areas in Srirangam and Thiruvanaikovil at an estimated cost of Rs.24 crore. Under this phase, residential colonies spread over a radius of 10.53 square kilometres in Srirangam and Thiruvanaikovil areas would be brought under the sewer network. The project would benefit a population of 31,145 in the base year of 2014; 41,924 in the intermediate stage in 2029 and 56,405 in the ultimate stage by 2044. About 5.66 million litres a day of sewage are expected to be generated in these areas by 2029 and 7.61 MLD by 2044.
The project would address one of the major shortcomings of the existing underground sewer system in Srirangam by covering the Uthira and Chithra Veedhis around the famous Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple. These streets have been uncovered by the underground sewer network all these years. Provision of sewer system was one of the major demands of residents of these areas placed before Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on her election from the Srirangam constituency.
TWAD Board officials, led by S.Navaneethan, Executive Engineer, Project Formulation, TWAD Board, Thanjavur, made a power point presentation on the project before Corporation officials and elected representatives from Srirangam zone on Thursday. Corporation Commissioner T.T.Balsamy said the meeting was intended to elicit the views of the elected representatives and ensure that no area was left uncovered from the scheme.
According to TWAD officials, special provisions have been incorporated to provide the underground sewer line in Adayavalanchan, Chithra and Uthira Veedhis as the network has to run across narrow strips of land between the rear side of houses and the ramparts of the temple. Since the ramparts of the temple were in a precarious condition in many places, adequate care would be taken in consultation with the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department to ensure that the structure was not disturbed in any manner. Junction boxes would be provided in each house to ensure that the rampart was not affected. Similar arrangements would be made for providing the sewer system in the inner streets around the Sri Jambukeswarar Akilandeswari Temple in Thiruvanaikovil.
D.Rajendran, Assistant Vice President, Tamil Nadu Urban Development Project, through which funds for the project would be routed, also attended the meeting. He suggested certain design improvements in the sewer lines for Chithira/Uthira veedhis in order to minimise maintenance.
The new sewer lines would be connected to the existing underground drainage network in the city and the sewage would be pumped to the Corporation sewage treatment farm at Panchapur off the Tiruchi-Madurai National Highway. O.R.Sriraman, CPI councillor, urged the officials to explore the feasibility of collecting and treating the sewage locally in each zone. Mr.Balsamy said such a provision could be incorporated in the scheme to meet future requirements.
Mayor S.Sujatha, former Srirangam MLA M.Paranjothi, City Engineer S.Raja Mohamed, and Executive Engineers R.Chandran and S.Arunachalam attended the meeting.

The Railway community hope that the new school will start functioning from this academic year itself, citing the inauguration of the Kendriya Vidyalaya in neighbouring Perambalur district during the latter part of August last year. A Kendriya Vidyalaya in Golden Rock Workshop area has been a long-felt need, as wards of railway staff have to travel to either of the two KVs in the Ordnance Factory and the Heavy Alloy Penetrator Factory estates that are located more than 15 km away.

deepu051993 July 31st, 2011, 11:48 AM Indiscriminate felling: activists say cut it out
The continuing assault on the city's green cover, the latest casualty being a several decades-old peepal tree on the West Boulevard Road, has raised the hackles of environmental and civic activists in the city.
The tree opposite to the Ibrahim Park is said to be one of the oldest in the city and was cut down a couple of days back ostensibly for widening and re-laying the road end-to-end.
Already several trees along the West Boulevard Road were felled a few months back for the project. The road work, which was suspended prior to the Assembly election, has resumed now.
According to locals, the peepal tree is at least six to seven decades old. They allege that the felling of the tree does not serve any real purpose as it was located in a corner of the road junction and there were buildings further down towards the Singarathope junction. With the buildings jutting out well in front of the tree, there is no justification for cutting down the tree, say locals. A few other trees further down the road towards Singarathope are also likely to face axe soon, they fear.
Civic activists are critical over the Corporation's insensitivity to the need for preserving the city's green cover, which has been under increasing threat. Officials contend that felling trees were unavoidable to widen the narrow roads in the city. But not many are convinced.
Already over 200 trees in Thillai Nagar, Shastri Road, East Boulevard Road and West Boulevard Roads have been cut down ostensibly for the road widening projects by the Corporation during the previous regime, points out N.Ramakrishnan, convenor, Federation of Welfare Organisations.
At least 50 to 60 of these were six to seven decade old trees. The tree in front of Ibrahim Park was also one such and it was not at all an impediment for the smooth flow of traffic, he says.
The Corporation has not initiated any measure to compensate for the green cover lost. In October 2009, a greening drive initiated by the District Exnora in association with the Corporation along Shastri Road was abruptly stopped within a couple of days of its launch.
A few saplings planted along the road were pulled out and pits dug for the purpose were closed with concrete, reportedly under instructions from local political bigwigs. Roadside trees were often used as convenient shelters, it was contended then. But this is seen as a specious argument by many.
“This mindless felling of trees should be stopped. The concept of laying roads end-to-end by cutting down trees is completely misplaced. In many places it could be avoided and laying roads end-to-end does not serve much purpose,” observes Mr.Ramakrishnan.
Activists also point out that the additional space created through the encroachment eviction drives and the cutting down of trees was not being put to proper use either.
In most places, the cleared up space has been converted into parking areas. Even along the West Boulevard Road, where the Corporation has evicted encroachments and cut down several trees, the extra space available now is completely being occupied by goods vans and trucks.
K.Chandrasekar, coordinator, Forum for Environment Protection, a newly floated organisation of environmental activists in the city, observes that though removing trees that pose an impediment for traffic may be necessary for development in a few places it should be avoided wherever possible. The forum, he says, has planned to launch a cleaning and greening campaign along the Cauvery-Coleroon belt in Srirangam area in association with the government agencies and the Corporation.[/quote]
bajk July 31st, 2011, 07:23 PM Most of the new IT parks in Tamil Nadu do not have adequate infrastructural facilities to attract multinational software companies and big companies such as Infosys, Wipro and Tata Consultancy Services, the Information and Technology Minister, Mr R B. Udhaykumar, said here today.
The Minister, who was here to inspect the recently set up IT park at Navapattu near here said 11 companies had booked office space in the Park.
“The same situation prevails in IT parks at Madurai, Salem, Tirunelveli and Coimbatore,” he said.

Let this govt provide better infrastructure to attract IT majors to these parks.
bajk August 1st, 2011, 06:53 AM The State government would take steps to cancel the allotment of land given to private companies in the ELCOT Information Technology (IT) Park in Tiruchi if they do not start operations soon, the Minister for Information Technology R.B. Udayakumar said on Sunday.
No building had come up till now in the 43 acres of land allotted to 10 companies in the Tiruchi IT Park, he told reporters after inspecting the IT Park established at Navalpattu on the city's outskirts. The government had alienated to ELCOT 147.6 acres of land for the establishment of the Tiruchi IT Park.
The State government would look into the background of the companies which were yet to begin operations in the Tiruchi IT Park and issue notices, asking them to function soon. Necessary steps would be taken to cancel the land allotment if the companies fail to start operations, he said.
Accusing the DMK government of not selecting sites properly while establishing IT Parks in eight locations across the State, Mr. Udayakumar said none of the ELCOT IT Parks including the one at Chennai had begun to function.
“Children's parks”
The DMK government had neither provided proper infrastructure facilities nor made suitable arrangements for the IT Parks making it look like “children's parks,” he said.
Many multi-national companies were not interested in coming to Tamil Nadu during the DMK rule as they complained of not getting the right kind of cooperation.
Ground-level problems
The objective behind his inspection was to ascertain the ground-level problems and status of IT Parks and bring it to the notice of the Chief Minister.
Stating that the foundation for IT was laid during the AIADMK regime, he said all efforts were being taken by the present government to take Tamil Nadu a leading State in IT and e-governance. The AIADMK government was keen to provide all help to IT companies and those in the software business and was working with the objective of creating employment opportunities for the IT students and youth.
Efforts would also be taken to impart necessary IT-related training to students to enable them compete in the competitive environment.
The Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development Minister N.R. Sivapathy, IT Secretary Santhosh Babu, ELCOT managing director Atul Anand, Collector Jayashree Muralidharan and officials accompanied the Minister.

ajnath August 3rd, 2011, 06:14 AM Shed gears up to maintain EMD locos
Infrastructure facilities are being augmented at the Tiruchi Diesel Loco Shed to house high horsepower EMD-type diesel engines and their maintenance.
A slew of works would be executed inside the sprawling shed, which has already received three of the total 15 engines allotted to it by the Railway Board.
Funds to the tune of Rs.14 crore has been sanctioned by the Railway Board to the over 30-year-old shed for augmenting infrastructure facilities and purchase of special tools for the maintenance of the locos that are equipped with micro processors.
Conversion of two existing metre gauge pits into broad gauge; construction of additional metallurgical laboratory; creation of an hydraulic drop table pit to replace wheels and bogies; construction of an exclusive service room to store vital electrical and electronic equipment and extension of the covered shed area to accommodate the locos are some of the major works to be executed.
About six to seven new test-stands would be set up to test the vital components and major sub-assemblies of the 4,500 horsepower EMD locos, which are longer than the conventional ‘Alco' diesel engines, with higher fuel and lube oil capacity. Railway officials say about 60 to 70 special types of tools such as hydraulic torque wrenches and huck bolting tools required for the maintenance of these engines would be procured. Some of the equipment would be imported.
Homing over 100 diesel locos with majority of them being broad gauge, the shed has 10 bays where maintenance works are carried out in broad gauge and metre gauge diesel engines when they come for light and heavy schedules.
The officials say infrastructure works have already begun and are expected be completed before the end of the current fiscal. The Tiruchi shed is the first in Southern Railway zone to home EMD locos. The other diesel loco sheds are at Tondiarpet in Chennai, Erode and Ernakulam
Railway staff of the shed were sent in batches to the loco sheds in Hubli and Krishnarajapuram in Karnataka to undergo training in the maintenance of these engines, which can run at a maximum speed of 120 km per hour. The three EMD locos received by the shed would be used to haul goods wagons, officials said adding that two had already been put into service. The third one would be sent for trial soon. EMD locos are manufactured at the Diesel Loco Works, Varanasi, based on transfer of technology from the General Motors, USA.

A huge diesel hydraulic crane for use during emergency situation has been made available in Tiruchi Railway Division. Christened ‘Rajarajan', the diesel crane is stationed at the Tiruchi goods yard here.
Costing Rs. 7.56 crore, this is the first diesel crane in Tiruchi Railway Division and one among the 50 such cranes available in Indian Railways. Manufactured at the Jamalpur railway workshop in Bihar, the crane was commissioned here recently. It is being maintained by the Diesel Loco Shed here.
Being a hydraulic crane, all operations are carried out with hydraulic energy. Pneumatic, electrical/electronic technologies are also used in its operation.
With its maximum lifting capacity being 140 tonnes, the crane can lift the load from 4 metres below the track and up to 17 metres above the track.
The length of the crane over buffer is 13.290 metres, while the width and height of the crane in transport positions is 3.1 metres and 3.9 metres respectively.
The crane is attached to a broad gauge diesel locomotive and hauled to the accident spot for relief, rescue and restoration activities.
The maximum towing speed of the crane is 100 kilometres per hour, and it can self travel at a speed of 20 kilometre per hour for positioning itself in the accident spot.
The prime source of power is generated by Cummins diesel engine and an auxiliary engine is provided in case of failure of the main engine. The crane can be operated from 5.5 metres to 17.5 metres from its position. Railway officials here said 20 staff had been nominated to operate the crane during emergency situation.
Officials say steam cranes were widely used by the railways till the 1980s during disasters.
As the loading capacity of wagons and rail traffic increased over the years, steam cranes with lower lifting capacity were found to be insufficient to deal with disaster at a faster pace.
As an alternative, Indian Railways decieded to switch over to the 140 tonne lifting capacity diesel hydraulic cranes, railway officials added.
isham_9626 August 4th, 2011, 04:40 AM Hi all,
My suggestion is to merge this thread with Trichy Region thread, Since Srirangam is a part of Trichy city from 1996, I dont think we require separate thread for srirangam alone. If its related to Sri Ranganathaswamy temple then we can rename this thread instead of being Srirangam - Island town.
My main motto is if its in the name of Srirangam - Island town. people may think that still srirangam is separate town and not a part of Trichy city.
Please give your suggestions...

flyngbroomstick August 4th, 2011, 02:46 PM Kuruvai paddy coverage touches all time high in Trichy district in last 10 years
The area under kuruvai paddy in Tiruchi district has reached a 10-year high this season, thanks to the timely release of water and favourable conditions.
According to sources in the Agriculture Department, kuruvai paddy has been raised in about 9,834 hectares (ha) this year. This is the highest coverage achieved in the district during kuruvai after 2000-01. The system of rice intensification technique has been adopted in 5,432 ha, accounting for more than 50 per cent of the total area.
Though samba is the major crop for the district, the prospect of assured water supply for irrigation had enthused farmers to gear up for kuruvai paddy cultivation this year. The confidence of the farmers stemmed from the release of water for irrigation from the Mettur reservoir on June 6, ahead of the normal water release date on June 11.
Agriculture Department officials had been expecting an increase of about 1,500 ha in the area under kuruvai over the normal coverage of about 6,500 ha. Their expectations have well been exceeded.
According to statistics available with the department, kuruvai paddy was at a peak of 10,284 ha in 2000-01 and had been on the decline ever since. The coverage came down to 9,584 ha in 2001-02 and shrunk heavily to 2,616 ha in 2003-04. There was some recovery of sorts as it increased to 4,876 ha in 2004-05. The coverage was around 6,000 ha over the next two years. During 2007-08 and 2008-09, the kuruvai area in the district was over 5,000 ha. There was a fall again when it came down to 4,224 ha in 2009-10 and 4,750 ha in 2010-11 only to witness a resurgence this year.
Lalgudi block, one of the most fertile in the district, as usual accounted for the highest kuruvai area of about 5,116 hectares this season. However, department officials also observed that there has been an increase in kuruvai area in Uppilliyapuram block also on account of some timely rain and inflow into the tanks in the region. Officials said the standing crop across the district was in good condition.
“This has turned out to be a good season. With the opening of the Mettur reservoir ahead of the scheduled date, farmers were able to take up preparatory works and go in for the crop in time. There has been no report of any water scarcity and this is the main reason for the increase in coverage. We are hopeful of a good harvest also,” observed G.Kanagasabai, president, District Cauvery Delta Farmers Welfare Association.
Meanwhile, the Agriculture Department has started gearing up for the samba season ahead, which starts towards the end of August or September in single crop areas of the district. Officials said more than 620 tonnes of certified paddy seeds of several varieties, including improved white ponni, ADT 39, BPT 5204 and Tiruchi-1, have been stocked up.
The normal area under samba is around 62,600 ha but again this could also be exceeded if favourable conditions prevailed.

Trichy is to get few educational institutions in accordance to the 2011 Tamilnadu budget. No mention of Trichy's infrastructure is certainly a pinch and dash of salt and pepper to the wound. For all KN.Nehru disappointed Trichians who hoped to bring about a change by voting for Amma, sees red in the face of unchanging history. Amma should focus on bringing about state of the art infrastructure in the light of making Trichy par with Chennai in all means. There are still unfinished businesses hanging in the mid air such as the fully integrated bus station for trichy and the shifting of Gandhi market to decongest trichy and relief its people from the traffic blues. Architect Sivamani Muru, an overseas based architect and old student of RSK .Hr. Sec School, trichy did show some keen interest in drafting a mega plan for a fully integrated bus terminal for trichy for free, to the former Tamilnadu government and according to him the bus station should come up in a location closer to the major highways so that with the aid of mere connecting flyovers, all outstation buses in no time can get into their destined routes in the highway without congesting the inner city roads. He called this as Traffic Dispersing System (TDS). He wanted all this to come up in 150 acres or more and he also wanted the Tamilnadu government to set aside some vacant land to build the future trichy city train routes (Trichy Mass Rapid Transit) connecting the integrated bus station with the Trichy town and Trichy airport. He wanted the present central bus station to be rented out to Trichy Tour Operators (TTO), so that anyone can hop into the bus from here to go to all temples and tourist sites in and around trichy on a day tour. The airport buses will also use this old bus station as the terminal. so that the hotels already built and operated around this region will not lose its business, when the new Integrated Bus Station becomes operational elsewhere. Tourism in trichy will prosper and bring foreign exchange to trichy. He had such a foresight for Trichy's future but the former Tamilnadu government towards the end of its tenure identified Panchapur as the site and did nothing more. Amma should wake up and introduce more new infrastructure to Trichy and she should not do the same mistake as KN.Nehru. Please honour all those who put you and AIDMK back into power. Who is to take this information to Amma ???.
ajnath August 5th, 2011, 10:34 AM IIIT is surprise but dont we have one already functioning from Kancheepuram.Second institute for TN?
Mr bajk, it is not like IITs that a state will have only one institute. Some states have more than one IIIT like MP(Gwalior, Jabalpur) and UP (Allahabad, Amethi). These intitutes are below par with IITs.
bajk August 6th, 2011, 07:05 PM Mr bajk, it is not like IITs that a state will have only one institute. Some states have more than one IIIT like MP(Gwalior, Jabalpur) and UP (Allahabad, Amethi). These intitutes are below par with IITs.
Yes, we cannot compare these institutes with IIT but was wondering if more than one institute is allowed in a state and looks like it is.Anyway thanks for your clarification.
bajk August 6th, 2011, 07:12 PM Looks like knowingly or unknowingly TN govts are doing some small good things to Trichy other than Chennai. Let us pray this materializes and also other cities get some nationally significant inst. or industries.
Now let us carefully look at the words in budget. " This
Government has decided to start a new National Law
School and an Indian Institute of Information
Technology in Srirangam constituency.". A timeline is not give but hope it materializes within two to three years.
If some thing is already there in pipeline then these institutes may come up in couple of years. But if TN govt is going for a fresh request we never know when its going to happen.
bajk August 6th, 2011, 07:13 PM SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises) here have welcomed the State government's decision to come out with a new industrial policy this year and make the manufacturing sector the engine of economic growth.
The SMEs are buoyed by the budget announcements to make improvements in the power situation, start new industry clusters, and set apart adequate funds for improving infrastructure in industrial estates. According to the budget announcement, the SIDCO has identified 2,256 acres in 25 locations to promote industrial clusters for MSME sector in the coming years, to generate employment.
This year, the SIDCO will spend Rs. 23.5 crore to take up infrastructure works in seven new industrial estates, and Rs. 27.49 crore to upgrade infrastructure in eight industrial estates. The announcement to improve power situation is a cause for relief for the hundreds of vendors of the BHEL, Tiruchi, according to the president of BHEL Small Industries' Association, Rajappa Rajkumar.
The decision to provide additional incentives over and above the 15 per cent capital subsidy to promote MSME sector, will contribute to the growth of the sector, he said.
The government had announced that as a first step, the Tamil Nadu Industrial Investment Corporation will provide credit to micro, small and medium industries with three per cent interest rebate.
President of Tiruchi District Tiny and Small Scale Industries' Association S. Sridharan urged the government to ensure that the benefits accruing from interest rebate reaches the industrialists instantaneously.
Rather than back-end subsidy, the benefit must be provided to the industrialists in the SME sector on a quarterly basis, he emphasised.
There is hope in official circles that the government's encouragement to private companies to put up agro processing industries with farmers' participation in a cluster approach (with farmers holding at least 25 per cent of the share capital in the processing company that will be contributed by the State) will add value to the tomato and banana crops grown in thousands of hectares in the district.
The government's aim behind this move is to prevent farmers from resorting to distress sale of perishable commodities.

deepu051993 August 7th, 2011, 05:58 AM Entrepreneurs appealed to register as BHEL vendors
The Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited is planning to outsource valves and other components to a large extent and micro entrepreneurs should utilise the opportunity, said R. Paneer, Additional General Manager, Outsourcing (Valves), BHEL, Tiruchi, here on Saturday.
Explaining the registration procedure for entrepreneur to register as vendors, at a meeting organised jointly by RK Entrepreneurship and Skill Development Centre and Periyar Technology Business Incubator here, Mr. Paneer said the BHEL had recently called for registration of new vendors, presenting a major opportunity for micro and small entrepreneurs.
The BHEL has decided to outsource valves, oil field equipment and other components in a big way. Currently, the material was provided by BHEL and they were assembled by the vendors. In future the vendors would be asked to supply the products with their own materials. With a good order book position, there was a steady increase in the load given by BHEL to its vendors, he said.
The last date for submitting applications for vendors was October 31. However, the company was processing the applications as and when they were received, he added.
Rajappa Rajkumar, president, BHEL Small and Medium Scale Industries Association (BHELSIA), called upon entrepreneurs to form clusters among themselves so as to become quality vendors to the BHEL. Tiruchi was famous for many clusters and currently a common facility centre is coming up at Siruganur under a cluster project for which the Centre has sanctioned Rs.60 crore and the State Bank of India was advancing a credit of Rs.30 crore.
He appealed to the entrepreneurs to manufacture specialised products and suggested that the BHEL reserve specific products for micro enterprises.
BHELSIA would soon come up with norms for payment and other transactions between Tier I and Tier II vendors, he said.
A tier II vendor was given a job order by Cauvery Engineering Works of Keeranur at the meeting. S.Puniyamoorthi, proprietor, Cauvery Engineering Works, called upon entrepreneurs to focus on quality and delivery schedule.
S.Kandaswamy, General Manager, District Industries Centre, called upon entrepreneurs to avail the state government employment generation programme for the unemployed.
About 350 beneficiaries would be extended financial assistance under the scheme this year.
Funds will not be a constraint for entrepreneurs who come up with the right project, he said.
N.Kanagasabapathy, Managing Trustee, RK Trust, said they were expecting about 25 to 30 entrepreneurs to register themselves with the BHEL in response to its call for vendors to supply valves.
C.Ramaswamy Desai, Project Director, Periyar TBI, explained the hand-holding and other support services extended to entrepreneurs by the two organisations.
R.Arockiasamy, president, Jewellery Association, Tiruchi, D.Krishna Raj, branch manager, Indian Bank, Thillai Nagar, and others spoke.

bajk August 7th, 2011, 08:13 PM The State government's budget announcement to start a new National Law School and an Indian Institute of Information Technology in Srirangam constituency has brought cheers to the academic and legal community.
Tamil Nadu is poised to join the comity of select States to have a national law school/ university in the country. The legal fraternity's desire is that there should be prompt follow up measures to ensure the start of the national institution at the earliest. Advocates are a little wary that the enormity of procedural formalities could cause delay. “The State government must take immediate steps to secure recognition of the Bar Council of India for the national law school. The institution must be more than a centre of excellence, with a good library. The standard of excellence must be kept very high,” T. Jayanthi Rani, president, Women Advocates' Association, Tiruchi, said.
Unlike in the case of conventional law schools, the National Law School will produce legal experts in vital areas like cyber law and Intellectual Property Rights. The research focus is what will make it stand apart as an institution of national excellence, Ms. Jayanthi Rani explained, adding that candidates must be equipped to compete in any forum, with knowledge of laws in other countries. The institution, according to the legal fraternity, would be instrumental in preparing law professionals with global standards for corporate requirements.
The opinion of the legal community is that law profession is not so popular in Tamil Nadu as in other States. They cite the unsatisfactory performance of candidates from Tamil Nadu in the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT).
According to N. Thiagarajan, president, Tiruchi Bar Association, the announcement for a national law school is a welcome development. The profile of the national law school will be high because such institutions in the country have established a tradition of cent percent campus placements.
The candidates are bound to have a rich exposure since they would have opportunities for visits abroad under exchange programmes.
Likewise, the decision for Indian Institute of Information Technology has also buoyed the spirits of the academic community.
Tiruchi already has two institutions of national repute: the National Institute of Technology and the Indian Institute of Management. Thanks to the interest taken by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa who represents the Srirangam Assembly segment. Academics see historical significance in the addition of two more national institutions in the district at one go. Tamil Nadu already has an Indian Institute of Information Technology Design and Manufacturing functioning from the campus of the Indian Institute of Technology - Madras since 2007.
The IIIT is envisaged as a fully autonomous institution, through the PPP model. The partners setting up IIITs will be the ministry of human resource development, the governments of respective states where each IIIT will be established and industry members. A NASSCOM (National Association of Software Services Companies) report advocates greater role for private organisations in the establishment of IIITs.
According to ELCOT sources, an IIIT in Tiruchi will add value in no small measure to the activities of the Tiruchi IT Park at Navalpattu.

bajk August 8th, 2011, 02:09 PM To imbibe entrepreneurship in the minds of its students, the Shivani Group of Institutions here has established an exclusive incubation centre and linked it to its Entrepreneurship Development Cell.
Conceived to support entrepreneurial ventures by the enterprising section of students in four institutions: Shivani Institute of Technology, Shivani Engineering College, and Shivani School of Business Management under affiliation of the Anna University of Technology, Tiruchi, and S.S.K. Polytechnic College under the purview of the Directorate of Technical Education, the S. Senthilkumar Incubation Centre, has sufficient corpus to convert innovative ideas into products under expert guidance, according to P. Selvaraj, Chairman of the group of institutions that were started in 2009. Funds from the S. Senthilkumar Memorial Trust will be transferred to the Incubation Centre, he said.
The centre would enrol itself with the National Entrepreneurship Network and students will be encouraged to take part in the annual national-level entrepreneurship contest amongst students of about 500 member institutions in the network, said E. Ramasamy, former Director, Directorate of Technical Education, who now serves as the Director of the group of institutions.
The group rank among a handful of higher education institutions, including the elite IITs, in the country, to have an incubation centre at the institutional level, E. Sarath Babu, Founder and CEO, Food King, an alumnus of Indian Institute of Management – Ahmedabad, said, launching the facility on Wednesday.
He also inaugurated the Entrepreneurship Development Cell and lauded the initiative to promote entrepreneurship through incubation centre, which, he felt, would be instrumental in bringing about economic transition in the lives of backward families maximally.
Mr. Sarath Babu expressed keenness to come out with a database of business opportunities that would provide nuances into various dimensions of entrepreneurship, including operations and marketing, in each area free of cost, to motivate college-level entrepreneurship development cells.

ajnath August 9th, 2011, 05:51 AM Darshan opens presence on a promising note
Resplendent bhavas in the carnatic vocal rendition of S. Krithika of Thanjavur, and a scintillating performance of the Madras String Quartet, one of India's foremost Western chamber music ensembles, to an appreciative audience at the Devar Hall on Sunday marked the birth of Darshan in its new incarnation to serve as a window for art and beyond, in fond memory of J. Balaraman, a connoisseur of drama. The music concerts were inaugurated by ‘Sangeetha Sudha' Champa Kalkura.
Darshan has had a glorious past, starting its journey in the cultural milieu of Tiruchi four decades ago, in the forms of Readers' Forum, formed to critically evaluate serious works of contemporary Tamil writers; Cine Forum, under the guidance of Rev. Fr. Bess, that had the privilege of screening the best films of doyens of world cinema; and the Tiruchi Nataka Sangam that staged as many as thirty dramas, thanks to the herculean efforts of N.Jambunathan.
Inaugurating Darshan, Rev. Sr. Margaret Bastin, Principal, Kalai Kaviri College of Fine Arts, appreciated the non-profit organisation for its initiative to usher in a sense of appreciation for culture among the younger generation.
She felt that patronisation for art forms ought to be better in a place like Tiruchi, the birth place for several artistes, Sr. Margaret Bastin said, explaining how art brings about mental transformation.
Offering felicitations, Rajeswari Ramakrishnan, a connoisseur of fine arts associated with Darshan, felt that a cultural renaissance hinges on rich public patronisation of concerts in a scenario of increasing stress.
With a vision of creating more just, more equitable, more humane, more aesthetic, and spiritually absorbing civil society, Darshan intends to promote an awareness of the rich and heterogeneous cultural tapestry among the youth in the country with a string of programmes focussing on classical arts and their rituals, mythology and philosophy.
Darshan believes that by encouraging an awareness of the profound and subtler values of art forms, the genuine spirit of enquiry in the young can be provoked, making them kind and gentle human beings.
To inspire them and make them inspire others, Darshan lays greater stress on classical music, dance and serious films.
It has plans to organise a series of music concerts.
Darshan lays great emphasis on classical music, dance and serious films

Mysore, Aug. 9 (RK&DM)- It is quite common to see villages, towns and cities in our country, becoming famous for their agriculture, diary farming, handi-crafts, festivals, fairs, culture etc. But here is a case where a town has become well-known for its innumerable thieves, although it may sound surprising.
Ramjinagar, which is nearly 10 kms from Trichy, is one such town which has gained notoriety. Nearly 500 families with a total population of about 3,000 live in this notorious town, which has now become famous across the country for all the wrong reason.
On an average, almost every household has a , with thieves themselves numbering nearly 1,000 in this small town.
But what is special to note is that these thieves do not carry out their 'business' in Tamil Nadu.
The village has well-educated persons, who have got acquainted to making money without any hardwork. These people, who have 'embraced' robbery as their lone profession, belong to Shewai community and it is not surprising that a group of thieves hailing from this town, were successful in robbing Rs. 23.5 lakhs cash after diverting the attention of the staff in Karnataka Bank on D.D Urs Road here recently.
What is unique here is that Ramjinagar, which has earned so much notoriety, does not have a single lethal weapon in the entire town as most of the inhabitants of the town have acquired skills in easy money making.
The Tamil Nadu Government, taking note of the notoriety that the town had earned, set up a Police Station in Ramjinagar. But what is really astounding is that not even a single case of robbery has been registered in this Station. The robbers have chosen two seasons a year to execute their robbery plans and made it a habit to visit temples and go on for picnics along with their families, whenever they find time.
The Government, realising Ramjinagar's notoriety, embarked on a rehabilitation-cum- reform programme aimed at reforming the thieves, by training them in various vocational trades and providing them bank loans for an honourable resettlement. But only about 50 families got reformed, although most of the town's families benefited from the government's reformation programme. The thieves after spending the government's money, have returned to their old ways of robbery.
Women beauties
Although the men of Ramjinagar are thieves, it is most surprising to note that almost all of them have good looking wives. These robbers, upon committing robbery and burglary in other States, settle down in the town for a short while, displaying their 'wealth' in order to attract beautiful women, who seem to have fallen prey to the wiles and guiles of these robbers.
It is also said, some of the robbers have forcefully married good looking women after eloping with them. As the town has a large number of good looking women, who speak at least four different languages, Ramjinagar is also called the town of 'beautiful women.'
Also, the men of the town do not wear full pants as other men do. Instead they wear half-pants when they are in the town. Some of the robbers here have a history of 3 generations in this notorious profession.
Ramjinagar, which is known for notoriety, has a long history. Most of the people here are migrants, who joined a textile factory close to the town long back. As the factory closed after a few years, most of the people who entirely depended on the factory for their livelihood looked desperate for making a living. While some took to labour, the others, who were clever enough acquiring skills to earn easy money, took to robbery and other crimes.

deepu051993 August 9th, 2011, 02:24 PM Works to upgrade the Srirangam Government Hospital, as announced by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on her visit to her constituency in July, have begun following a government order sanctioning funds.
Even as preliminary procedure for the construction of a new block had been initiated, work on constructing a new post-mortem room had begun, T. Mohanasundaram, Joint Director, Medical and Rural Health Services, told The Hindu on Monday. The 70-year-old building housing the post-mortem wing had been demolished. A sum of Rs. 19.44 lakh had been allotted from the hospital maintenance fund for establishing an air-conditioned mortuary.
Of the Rs. 3.74 crore sanctioned for creating and upgrading infrastructure, purchasing advanced equipment, for administration, and appointment of specialists, Rs.2 crore would be utilised for constructing an exclusive block for women patients. This building would house a modernised maternity and ante-natal ward, operation theatre and a 30-bed women's surgery section.
A 30- bed men's surgery section would come up in the place of the existing maternity ward.
Allotment of Rs. 1.4 crore for equipment would be used for enhancing laboratory facilities and installing new machines, including digital X-ray and dialysis units, said Mr. Mohanasundaram.
As the temple town of Srirangam attracts a regular stream of visitors, including high-profile guests, five air-conditioned special rooms would be commissioned at a cost of Rs. 15 lakh in the hospital to meet their medical needs.

The admission process will continue for some more time, since the intake for each programme is 60, university sources said.
One third of the cost of establishing these constituent colleges is to be borne by the Union Government through the University Grants Commission. The university is expected to coordinate with the district collectors to identify land for permanent campuses.
Chief Minister Jayalalithaa while inaugurating these colleges through video conferencing last month exuded hope that the one at Inamkulathur will brighten future for a large number of rural students in her Srirangam Assembly segment.
The college functions temporarily from a building on the premises of the Government Higher Secondary School.
The college was one of the poll promises of the Chief Minster, who has also sanctioned a Horticulture College for Women, a National Law School, and an Indian Institute of Information Technology for Srirangam constituency.

ajnath August 10th, 2011, 06:55 AM Erosions on Kudamuritti bank send shock waves to residents
Major erosions along the right bank of the Kudamuritti River in the city have made residents in scores of low-lying flood prone colonies along the Vayalur Road jittery ahead of the monsoon this year.
A long stretch of the river adjoining the Ammaiyappa Nagar has been badly eroded. Big cavities have formed along the bund and at one point the bund has been reduced to a width of just about three feet.
The mud track also serves as the access road to the Kuzhumaiyi Amman Temple near the Puthur weir and is widely used by motorists to reach the temple from the Vayalur Main Road.
Building retaining walls along the river bund is one of the components under the Rs.253.71 crore flood control scheme executed by the Public Works Department. However, construction of the concrete structure along the river bund was suspended prior to the elections and has not resumed so far. Retaining walls have been built for some distance from the Puthur weir and the work has been abandoned midway.
During the monsoon last year, the PWD and Corporation officials had reinforced a small stretch of the bund at this stretch with sand bags placed between bamboo poles. But since then, more area has been eroded.
“With the monsoon just round the corner, people are getting apprehensive. When the water flow in the river rises, the weakened bunds may give in and jeopardise the safety of residents of many colonies,” fears T.M.Renga, the DMKcorporation councillor from the area.
Local residents still have vivid memories of the last major flood in November 2005 when the overflowing Kudamuritti submerged several residential colonies along the Vayalur Road and caused major damages. During monsoon rain waters from various parts of the city and flood discharges from Koraiyar and Ariyar have to ultimately drain in to the Cauvery River through the Kudamuritti. At the peak of the flood, the discharge in the river had touched about 30,000 cusecs against its carrying capacity of just about 8,000 cusecs. If there were to be such high discharges it could prove to be very dangerous given the condition of the river bund, residents fear.
The badly eroded bunds have to be urgently repaired before the onset of the monsoon, says V.Sundararaju, a resident of the Srinivasa Nagar. Any breach in the bund would affected thousands of residents in Ammaiyappa Nagar, Shanthasheela Nagar, Lavanya Colony, Janakiammal Colony, Anandam Nagar, Bankers Colony, Srinivasa Nagar south and north, Geetha Nagar, Canara Bank Colony, Kumaran Nagar on the eastern side of the river, he observed.

What happened to the flood control program by spending around 300 crores of rupees?. Since the monsoon is fast approaching when they are going to complete the work and if it is not done immediately, then there is no meaning of doing the work after everything flooded away. :bash: :bash:

Construction of retaining walls along the Kudamuritti River in the city would resume immediately, said P.Balasubramanian, Chief Engineer, Water Resources Organisation, Tiruchi Region, here on Wednesday.
The work, sanctioned under the flood control scheme, would be completed before September, Mr.Balasurbamanian told The Hindu . The work was suspended a couple of months back after retaining walls were constructed for some distance from the Puthur Weir. Meanwhile, the river bund has been eroded badly, with residents fearing possible breaches during the monsoon.
The Chief Engineer also indicated that the PWD would soon widen the Kudamuritti River as much as possible, without waiting for land acquisition as proposed under the flood control project. “We will increase the carrying capacity of Kudamuritti as much as possible even without acquiring lands to ensure that there was no flooding on account of overflow from the river during the monsoon this year,” he said.
Work on the construction of aqueduct at the Puthur Weir, which had come to a halt, would resume during the “next closure period” of the river.

bajk August 11th, 2011, 06:30 AM Goldsmiths in Tiruchi have formed a consortium to derive benefit from the support schemes of the Central and State governments for cluster-based manufacturing and marketing.
After obtaining small scale industry registration, the Tiruchi Jewellery Manufacturers Consortium Private Limited has established a common marketing centre and opened a showroom. The consortium is in the process of setting up a raw material bank to offer ‘metal assistance service' to its members.
Only solution
According to R. Arokiasamy, its Managing Director, the cluster formation was prompted by the realisation that deriving benefit from the MSE (Micro and Small Enterprises) Cluster Development Programme was the only solution for sustenance of the vocation that has been practiced as family tradition for generations.
An understanding that they need to keep pace with technology by integrating mechanisation into manufacturing processes in order to expand business has set in among gold jewellery makers. The consortium has already initiated efforts to procure state-of-the-art equipment for creating a common facility centre with assistance from banks.
Impact
The consortium is hopeful of creating an impact at national and global levels through its common marketing centre as Tiruchi district is well known as a hub for manufacture of gold jewellery, right from nine to 23 carats. Alongside stabilising the business of gold jewellery making and marketing, the consortium plans to export seven categories of jewelleries with BIS Hallmark certification.
The consortium is supported by the Department of Industries and Commerce, Tamil Nadu; Union Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises; Periyar Technology Business Incubator; and Friday Solutions, a Chennai-based consultancy.
Tapping the utility of the Centre's SFRUTI (Scheme of Fund for Regeneration of Traditional Industries), Tiruchi-based R.K. Entrepreneurship and Skill Development Centre conducted industrial motivation campaign sponsored by the MSME Development Institute, and entrepreneurship skill development programme in modern jewellery making, months ago for the goldsmiths who mainly do contract jobs for major jewellery houses.

The Trichy Unit of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) is presently augmenting its manufacturing capacity of steam generator and valve facilities as a part of the Company’s programme of expanding power plant equipment manufacturing capacity to 20,000 MW per annum. In addition, it is also setting up a Power Plant Piping Unit at Tirumayam, in Pudukottai District of Tamil Nadu. Both these are planned for completion by March 2012 with an investment of around Rs.600 crore.
The BHEL Trichy Unit is exploring multi-modal transport options, including marine shipping by way of utilizing the Karaikal port in Tamil Nadu, to address transportation issues associated with the movement of heavy/over dimension consignments (ODCs) through rail & road, as well as reduce the delivery time of boilers from its factory to customer project sites spread across the country.
The above information was given by the Minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Shri Praful Patel in a written reply in the Lok Sabha today.

MR.TRICHY August 11th, 2011, 05:56 PM Employees of Bharathidasan University have submitted a petition to Chief Minister Jayalalithaa pleading for her intervention to restrain Vice-Chancellor K.Meena from taking ill-advised decisions resulting in wastage of university resources.
They claimed that the decision taken a few months ago to award contract for printing of degree certificates to a printing press owned by a person associated with the previous regime had resulted a loss of Rs.1crore to the university.
The name of the printing press was “unethically” inscribed on all the degree certificates, and hence had to be confined to dustbin.
The university was attempting to cover up the issue by concealing the particular file, the petition said, charging the Department of Public Relations with complicity.
The employees alleged that about 40 teaching posts for which interviews were held a couple of months ago were “sold”, and that the interview was a “mere eye wash”.
They sensed “murky dealings” in the appointment of 18 non-teaching posts as well, and sought to know how the university could flout the State Government's norm introduced in 1991 that appointments to government organisations need to be carried out through the employment exchange.
The employees wondered how lakhs of rupees could be spent for refurbishing the offices of the Vice-Chancellor and the Public Relations Officer. A huge sum was spent to beautify the VC's quarters though she does not stay there.
When asked about the allegations, the Vice-Chancellor denied any loss to the university in the printing of degree certificates. “Contract for printing the degree certificates was awarded as per the usual practice and norms,” she maintained.
The Vice-Chancellor also refuted allegations that the teaching posts were sold saying that the candidates were chosen by the subject committees.
Dr. Meena, however, said “minimal” expenditure was incurred in revamping the office and quarters of Vice-Chancellor. She also claimed that no money was spent on establishing the VC's Camp Office in the Khajamalai Campus.

The motorcycle, the most ubiquitous vehicle on the roads, also seems to be the preferred choice of Corporation Commissioner K.Veera Raghava Rao to get around the city for a first hand knowledge of the status of civic services.
The youthful Mr.Rao has been going around the city every morning after having taken over as the Commissioner last week. Early on Thursday morning, Mr.Rao hopped on to the motorcycle of a corporation sanitary inspector at the Central Bus Stand in the city and rode pillion for nearly four hours to crisscross various lanes and by-lanes across seven wards in different parts of the city, checking the garbage collection system in work. (Mr.Rao arrived at the bus stand at around 6 a.m. by hitch-hiking a ride from the Corporation Travellers Bungalow, where he is temporarily put up).
En route, Mr.Rao halted at various spots to inspect the process of garbage collection by sanitary workers, give instructions to improve the system and also educating shopkeepers on the need for having their own garbage bins in front of the shops.
The Commissioner traversed from Rockins Road, Bharathidasan Salai, Bharathiar Road, Cooni Bazaar, K.K.Nagar, Iyyapa Nagar, Sundar Nagar, LIC Colony, Indian Bank Colony, Wireless Road, Airport Road, Mannarpuram, Warehouse, Andakondan and Uzhavar Sandhi before winding up his morning inspection routine.
He instructed sanitary workers to ensure that garbage was cleared first on main roads between 6 and 8 in the morning, before they moved to the inner lanes. He also told them to clean up clogged drains and call for machinery if necessary. More importantly, Mr.Rao also told them that he would continue to conduct such inspections frequently. He did not take along any other officer but for two sanitary inspectors Karthikeyan and Prince Saharaj.
Speaking to The Hindu later, Mr.Rao said “cleaning and greening” the city were his immediate focus. Educating the shopkeepers on having garbage bins in front of their shops for better collection is one of his key ideas. “But the efficiency of the (garbage collection) system has to be improved first,” he observed.
Mr.Rao also indicated that he would be open to the idea of taking residents welfare organisations on board if they were interested in the cleaning drive. Asked about his preference for a motorcycle, he replied: “I find this a convenient and quicker mode of transport, especially to visit narrow lanes, make frequent halts and keep going. It gives me a better idea about the ground situation.”

ajnath August 13th, 2011, 06:32 AM City police moot ideas to improve traffic movement
The city police have put forward to the district administration a slew of measures to improve traffic movements and facilitate their effective regulation and management within the city limits.
Shifting the central bus stand and the Gandhi Market; removal of encroachments on the Thanjavur road especially from Gandhi Market to Old Palpannai roundabout and those along the Sub Jail road; and provision of rumblers on both sides of the road in front of the Government Hospital are among the measures mooted by the law enforcers.
Reducing the sizes of the roundabouts; establishment of centre medians in certain stretches; provision of proper parking lots in the business nerve centre of Fort area and in Srirangam also form part of the traffic-related measures that were sent through separate proposals to the District Collector who is also the Chairman of the District Road Safety Council.
The traffic-related measures and suggestions were meant to address the problem of congestion in view of the burgeoning vehicle density on the city roads. Going by the proposals, the size of the Head Post Office roundabout and those at Chinthamani, Junction and Prabhat need to be reduced for smooth flow of traffic. The large sizes of these roundabouts were obstructing clear view of the traffic movements, causing the risk of accidents.
As the parallel bus stops near Periyar Nagar bridge were causing traffic hold ups, one of the bus stops could be located opposite to the All Women Police Station near Mambazha Salai. With a view to checking fatal accidents between Kollidam By Pass ‘Y road junction and check post 6, the road there could be widened and centre median created.
Law enforcers say removal of encroachments which had shrunk the road space especially from Gandhi Market to Palpannai roundabout on the Thanjavur road and widening of the road would enable free flow of traffic. Removal of encroachments along the stretch from Puthur Agraharam to Nachiarkoil Junction in Woraiyur area, and from check post 6 to Mambazha Salai has also been sought.
Yet another suggestion to ease congestion was made for operating buses bound for Salem, Namakkal and Bangalore from Central Bus Stand through the by pass road instead of plying them through the city.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) S.Ramaiyan says that early implementation of these measures would go a long way in ensuring free traffic flow and in managing vehicular movements better.
Shifting central bus stand and Gandhi Market, removal of encroachments on Thanjavur road are among suggested measures, writes R.Rajaram

These improvement projects have been in papers for the past several years and every one knows that ,these are very much essential for the development of the congested old Trichy area...
Shifting of the Bus stand atleast 5 km from city and the market to city outskirts like that of Madurai itself will become a major infra development for the city.

kg4129 August 15th, 2011, 05:01 AM People from different walks of life took part in a peace march taken out by the Tiruchi Chapter of India Against Corruption, a citizen's movement led by members of civil society, in the city on Sunday expressing their support for Jan Lokpal.
The rally started off from the old Cauvery bridge and culminated at Singarathope. The participants who raised slogans and carried placards demanding an end to corruption signed a memorandum addressed to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
They appealed to the Prime Minister to consider the seriousness of corruption and recognise the pro-active role played by the citizen' movement by endorsing the Jan Lokpal Bill.
The Tiruchi Chapter of IAC, formed five months back, joined hands with the Citizens' Forum, a conglomeration of social and consumer service organisations, on April 9, 2011, to express solidarity with Gandhian Anna Hazare when he had announced a fast against corruption. About 200 people converged at the Tamil Sangam and offered suggestions to root out corruption.
The Tiruchi Chapter has on its agenda a proposal to educate public on Right to Information Act. About 450 like-minded citizens have registered with its website: www.iactrichy.org.

kg4129 August 15th, 2011, 05:03 AM The Tiruchi–based Citizens' Forum has sought the inclusion of Prime Minister and Judiciary under the purview of Lokpal.
It has also favoured bringing the anti-corruption wing of the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Central Vigilance Commission under the control of Lokpal.
Recommendations
Recommendations to this effect were made at a special meeting organised by the forum here on Saturday to discuss various clauses of the draft Lokpal Bill tabled by the Central government in the Parliament recently.
While seeking the establishment of Lok Ayukta in every State to probe allegations of corruption against public servants at the State-level, the Forum said the recommendations of the Lokpal and Lok Ayukta should be compulsorily acted upon.
The Lokpal Bill must have a clause providing for confiscation of property of those public servants against whom corruption charges had been levelled and that in case of malicious complaints financial penalty should be imposed, the forum said.
Speaking on the occasion, advocate S.Martin said the institution of Lokpal had become a necessity today as corruption had taken deep roots in the system.
Shanthi Bhushan
Though the first Jan Lokpal bill was introduced in 1968 by Shanthi Bhushan, a legal luminary, the bill was still pending for more than 42 years now.
The civil society wanted a transparent system, he said adding that every citizen had a role to play in ensuring that the Lokpal institution was established. Initiating the interactive discussions, the forum's convenor S.Pushpavanam said every State should have a Lok Ayukta in place. The Right to Information Act and the media had brought about great awareness among the people, he added.

This rally is the golden opportunity to persuade DRM,Railways who is also taking part in the rally. Railways will heed ears to these important demands if someone like CM pushes for it.

The musical treat presented by the maestros was complemented by a team of instrumentalists. Mention by Mr.Sriram Parasuram of the relevant information on ragas and composers before making the renditions went down well with the appreciative audience. The applause was overwhelming for the song ‘Kaakkai Siraginiley' composed by Bharathiyar. The musical evening concluded with a devotional composition of Sant Tukaram.

bajk August 17th, 2011, 07:50 PM Concerned over increasing accidents on the Bharathidasan Salai, one of the busiest arterial roads in the city, the city police have put forward a suggestion to the Tiruchi Corporation to provide rumblers along the road to curtail over speeding of vehicles, considered one of the chief causes for accidents.
The suggestion was made in the wake of fatal and non-fatal accidents that were reported along the Bharathidasan Salai prompting law enforcers to classify it as one of the accident-prone stretches within the city limit.
In the past-one-and-half years alone, the Bharathidasan Salai had been witness to 24 accidents especially in the stretch from Othakadai to Cantonment.
Police statistics reveal that seven fatal and 12 non-fatal accidents were reported in 2010, while five accidents including two fatalities had been reported in the current year along this road.
Over speeding especially by two-wheeler riders and sudden entry of vehicles from the cut roads were found to be the major causes for accidents along the Bharathidasan Salai where the Corporation Office, Tiruchi Taluk Office and other business and commercial establishments are situated.
Taking cognizance of the accidents along this busy road, the City Police authorities have written to the Corporation to provide rumblers at different points including near the police club building, close to Mutharaiyar statue signal, and at the cross cuts along the centre median.
Police sources say as many as 745 motor petty cases had been booked in the stretch from the Mutharaiyar signal to the MGR statue over the past seven-and-half months this year including 85 cases for disobeying signal and 13 cases of cell phone driving.
In 2010, the Traffic Police had booked over 1,000 cases in this road including 50 cases for use of mobile phones while driving and 73 cases for disobeying signal.
Palpannai roundabout to SIT; Mannarpuram to Panchapur; Viralimalai Junction to Panchapur; and Zonal point to Check Post 1 are the other stretches identified as vulnerable by the police.

Great news.
Happy that the aeropark project is still on.
If anything happens on the ground I will be happy. Kurippa perambalur plan. I seriously dont belive these guys. This has been on the news and only on papers since 4 years or more.
bajk August 18th, 2011, 06:34 AM The State Government has unveiled different components of an aerospace park project, which was originally mooted by the previous Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government.
Securing SEZ status to a private aviation company in Hosur, development of an industrial park for the manufacture of aircraft components in Sriperumpudur, establishment of an integrated aerospace park in Perambalur and a satellite MRO facility adjoining the Chennai airport were the components.
Initiating the debate on the demands for grants to the Industries Department, Minister S. P. Velumani told the Assembly that steps would be taken to secure Special Economic Zone (SEZ) status to Taneja Aerospace and Aviation Ltd, Hosur for its existing facility and expansion in Hosur for the development of Aerospace Park.
The government had also proposed to develop an industrial park in 100 acres exclusively for aircraft components manufacturing industries in Sriperumbudur.
An integrated Aerospace Park in a 3,000 acre land in Perambalur SEZ is also proposed with the focus on manufacturing and assembling of aircraft. Creating an integrated Aerospace Park which would support the assembling of indigenously designed aircraft is the objective of this programme, said the Minister. A satellite Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility for aircraft adjoining the Chennai airport in a 50 acre area is also proposed. The Tamil Nadu Industries Development Corporation is in the process of identifying land for the MRO facility near Chennai airport. Similarly, the SIPCOT has been requested to allocate 100 acres of land in Sriperumbudur for component manufacturing Park. L and T-Ramboll has been appointed as the consultant to carry out the feasibility study and marketing assistance. The consultants have submitted the final report to TIDCO, the Industries Minister said.

bajk August 18th, 2011, 06:37 AM Work on verification of the base map for developing a Geographic Information System (GIS) for the city has resumed. Tata Consultancy Services has been entrusted with the pilot project to develop the GIS.
The GIS database will have applications in urban planning and civic services, including monitoring property tax assessment and collection, the drinking water supply and drainage networks.
Accordingly the entire city's infrastructure such as buildings, roads, water distribution network, hospitals, educational institutions, bus stands, transport routes, parks and playgrounds would be mapped. The project has been taken up under the World Bank-funded Tamil Nadu Urban Development Project-III. Tiruchi is one of the five urban local bodies identified in the State for land-based digital mapping with the help of satellite images. The Coimbatore and Madurai corporations and the Gobichettipalayam and Rajapalayam municipalities are the other four urban local bodies that are to be covered. According to Corporation officials, a base map has already been created based on satellite images.
The Tata Consultancy Services would conduct a survey to evaluate and verify the details in the base map. Field staff of the Tata Consultancy Services would take up the survey in the two wards of 44 and 56 in the city initially. The work was suspended before the election and has been resumed now. The survey would be extended to other parts of the city in a phased manner.
Collector Jayashree Muralidharan has appealed to residents to extend their full cooperation for the project. Though the Tiruchi Corporation had launched a similar exercise in association with the Department of Geology of the Bharathidasan University some years back, the initiative was abandoned after surveys were carried out in a few wards. Subsequently, the project was revived and entrusted with the TCS.

raman94 August 19th, 2011, 10:49 AM Residents of hundreds of localities on either side of the 14.5 km Palpannai-Thuvakudi stretch of Tiruchi-Thanjavur highway have a cause for cheer.
The State government on Tuesday came out with a positive indication that the required land will be acquired for handing over to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for laying service lanes.
During the course of the Assembly proceedings, the State Minister for Highways and Minor Ports Edappadi K.Palanisamy informed that the government has a proposal to acquire land at a cost of Rs.84.5crore.
The Minister's reply was to a question listed for discussion by the Tiruverumbur MLA S.Senthil Kumar of DMDK. Mr.Senthil Kumar thanked the Minister on behalf of the public in Tiruverumbur constituency.
At present, the service-lanes are being laid in parts at those spots where lands are in the possession of the National Highways Authority of India. Elsewhere, the trading community had been putting up a stiff resistance against land acquisition.
For the last few years, the Federation for Retrieval of Tiruchi Palpannai–Thuvakudi Service Road, encompassing residents' associations, has been in the forefront of demanding the service roads for the 14.5 km accident-prone stretch.
The public were disenchanted with the previous regime for budging to the pressure exerted by the trading community and forcing the NHAI to abandon its original plan for laying service roads.
The NHAI had devised its plan taking cognisance of the presence of major industries like BHEL, Golden Rock Workshop, two ordnance factories, industrial estates, important government offices, and a plethora of educational institutions.
Following repeated representations by the federation, the NHAI had promised that it would pursue in right earnest the proposal for construction of service roads at a cost of Rs.54 crore under the National Highways Development Project Phase – VII in the event of the State government meeting the land acquisition cost.

flyngbroomstick August 20th, 2011, 05:38 AM Truckers' strike: vegetable markets do usual business
http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/7497/18augtysgnns07lor759892.jpg
A majority of the 10,000 and odd lorries operating under the banner Tiruchi District Lorry Owners Association were off the roads on Friday in response to the strike called by the South India Motor Transport Welfare Association demanding a reduction in the toll on national highways and rationalisation of diesel and tyre prices.
However, the strike did not impact any of the vegetable markets across the district though movement of cement, steel, banana and heavy engineering power plant and windmill equipment fabricated in Tiruchi was affected.
The Secretary of the District Lorry Owners Association R.K.Prabhakaran claimed that the strike was a “total success.” Almost 95 per cent of the vehicles were off the roads and the vehicles which were plying were those arriving from other States, he claimed. These lorries would also go off the roads once they unloaded the consignments. There were also some local deliveries, he told The Hindu .
However, sand lorries of the district did not participate in the strike. Sources in the District Sand Lorries Owners Association said though they extended moral support to the striking truckers, they continued to operate their vehicles to prevent needless hike in sand prices which was just showing signs of stabilising after a recent spurt. Petroleum tankers were also not participating.
Traders at the Gandhi Market, the major procurement place for traders of smaller markets in the central districts, said arrivals of vegetables have not been affected as mini vans and goods autos were plying. “There has been no impact so far on account on the strike. But if it were to continue for a week or so, we may witness some problems,” said U.S.Karuppiah, president, Gandhi Market United Traders Association. As of now, there was no increase in price of vegetables, he said.
Traders at the market pointed out that most of the vegetables, except for English vegetables, are procured locally in the region. Most traders have stocked up vegetables which are normally brought in from long distances. Onion traders have also stocked up both Bellary and small onions. “Since we had prior information about the strike, most of us have stocks for five days to a week,” said A.Thangaraj, general secretary, Tiruchi District Onion Commission Mandi Traders Association. The lorry strike has however was a cause for concern for the local industry, especially the fabrication units. “Transportation of power plant and wind mill equipments fabricated here has been affected,” said Rajappa Rajkumar, president, BHEL Small and Medium Scale Industries

As many as 1,000 students - 100 fom each of the 10 schools - in and around the city danced: not for a cultural programme or an entertainment show, but with the intention to sensitising the masses to the importance of preserving the planet earth from the impact of global warming, polluting factors, particularly use of plastics.
The ‘Go Green' a mega dance event organised jointly by the Nartana, Vibration Media and Ilanthalir provided an opportunity to students to contribute and dedicate their talent towards conservation of ecology. Chandra Mohan, director of Vibration Media. M.A. Maluk Mohamed, principal of M.A.M. College of Engineering, said it was high time that students were sensitised to the importance of planting saplings to increase the green cover in our planet. He also spoke on the efficacy of tapping renewable energy, an eco-friendly exercise which has proved to be an economic initiative at his college. P. Mohan, president of Tamil Nadu state youth and students exnora; J. Im not making this as an issue Mr. X (Sorry I dont know your name also i cant mention your username). This was my suggestion. If still you people would like to have separate thread pls goahead. But later other people from different areas like Thiruverumbur, K.K. Nagar, etc,.. will create separate thread and you guys should not argue. My ultimate view is to have Trichy as one region.
This reply is also for deepu051993.
Also deepu051993 said there is no prob in other region's thread.
Yes they dont have prob because they dont create separate thread for an area within city limit. They have one regional thread and other for various projects and topics. Not like us.

flyngbroomstick August 21st, 2011, 05:37 AM Two handloom weaver societies to be revived at Woraiyur: Ramanaa
The State government will take immediate action for the revival of two major handloom weavers' societies in Woraiyur in the city, said B.V. Ramanaa, Handlooms and Textiles Minister here on Saturday.
Addressing press conference after visiting the societies and ascertaining the weavers' problems, Mr. Ramanaa said that two societies – the Devanga cotton and silk handloom weavers cooperative society and the Tiruchi district handloom weavers' society would be revived.
The Minister said that a three-pronged strategy would be adopted for their revival. Firstly, steps would be taken to improve upon the design and new designs would be introduced; efforts would be taken for supply of quality yarn to the societies. Increase in wages and hike in dividend would be other aspects which would be taken in to consideration.
Explaining the objective of his visit to these societies, Mr. Ramanaa said that the previous DMK-led government had not taken adequate steps for ascertaining the needs of these societies.
He said that the Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had increased the monthly assistance of the weavers from Rs. 450 to Rs.1,000 which was widely welcomed by the weaving community. The Chief Minister would come to the rescue of the weak societies in Tiruchi.
His department would also set up special clusters in Tiruchi district for the production and promotion of handloom goods.
On the potential of the district in general and Woraiyur in particular in producing quality handloom goods, Mr. Ramanaa said that he had understood the heritage value of the handloom industry at Woraiyur from ancient archaeological evidence.
Primarily, the weavers' views would be ascertained for evolving the strategy for bringing the societies out of the red, he said.
N.R. Sivapathi, State Minister for Animal Husbandry and Diary Development; P. Kumar, MP; R. Manoharan, MLA accompanied Mr. Ramanaa.
isham_9626 August 21st, 2011, 12:20 PM K. Veera Raghav Rao belongs to the Hempudi village in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh. When he was studying in the Tsundur Mandal Parishad, Upper Primary School, he decided to try for admission in the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya opened recently in Guntur District. The young lad was shy and soft spoken but he was determined to win. Veera means victor and the lad lived up to his name. Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya selection test was a tough test, recalls K. Veera Raghava Rao today. He was amongst the first batch of students admitted in the JNV and it was an exciting moment when he learnt he had cleared the test. This victory was like a new dawn in his life. It was only appropriate that he was going to a place which means New Dawn Navodaya.
It was the turning point of my life, says K. Veera Raqghav Rao, who has today cleared the Indian Administrative Services and has been ranked at 81st position in the list of merit of Civil Service Exam, 2006. He is due to join as Probationer in mid August this year and had come to visit the NVS Hqrs. In Delhi on his way to Mussoories. The story of this young boy who made his dreams come true, blossoming in the sunshine of Navodaya is indeed moving.
Respect and gratitude writ large on his fact, K. Veera Raghav Rao reminisces about the stir caused in the Mandal when he cleared both JNVST and now, the IAS Examinations. The remark, There goes the boy of K. Venkateswarulu who cleared Navodaya, has now been replaced by the exclamation. Do you know the boy of Venkateswarulu and Dhanalakshmi has become IAS ?
This ex-student of Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti says that the environment and ambience of Navodaya Vidyalayas are encouraging to all round personality development. Besides, a solid foundation in my academic field, Navodaya gave me an opportunity to develop physical fitness through Sports & to do a lot of creative activity which channelised my energies in a very positive way says this ex-Navodayan, who is now a Black Belt Karate expert.
According to Veera, the most important change that Navodaya brought about in his life was an ability to aspire for bigger things in life. Had I stayed in the Mandal school, I would have never dreamt of the IAS. I used to see our DM who is the Chairperson of our JNV. Also, our former Director Sir, Mr. K.S.Sarma visited our JNV. Seeing these people, I was inspired to join the IAS. The fortunate part was that Navodaya Vidyalaya gave me the opportunity to grow. Moreover, my teachers and parents gave me tremendous moral support. So says Veera Raghava Rao.
K. Veera Raghav Rao worked as a Systems Engineer with WIPRO Technologies after doing his B.Tech from the V.R.Siddartha Engineering College. Vijayawada, and also as the Mandal Parishad Development Officer with A.P. Govt. before qualifying for the IAS.
When asked what will be his priorities as an IAS Officer, he is quick to reply, Development through Education.
This has been the story of his personal growth from soft spoken shy young boy to a young man brimming with confidence and hope.
The Navodaya family is always present in his mind and he smilingly says, Even during my UPSC interview, we discussed Navodaya and I told them how it had helped me.
The Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti family wishes the young man, a life full of happiness.

I disagree. As I said earlier most of the development works discussed in this thread is related to Srirangam constituency which includes other areas from Trichy. So it is best to merge Srirangam thread with Trichy main thread.
There is not point in just starting new threads when there are no regular updates. I dont see any regular updates in Shopping or transportation threads. Trichy main thread, shopping and entertainment, Transportation & Infrastructure threads should be sufficient to discuss all the developments in the Trichy region.

bajk August 22nd, 2011, 06:10 AM The proposed Rs.100 crore super specialty centre at the Annal Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital would be established as a six storied structure housing 10 medical and surgical departments spread over 6,000 square feet.
As a preliminary exercise following the Chief Minister's announcement, Health and Family Welfare Minister V.S.Vijay inspected the infrastructure and healthcare facilities at the hospital here on Sunday.
Accompanied by Animal Husbandry Minister, N.R.Sivapathi and Collector Jayashree Muralidharan, he reviewed the site for the proposed centre. Going through the blueprint of the hospital with Public Works Department engineers and health officials, he advised a few changes in the current plan. He suggested a 40 feet pathway from the main road be created to facilitate direct entrance to the new block.
The proposed 300-bed super speciality block would house 10 speciality departments in cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery, neurology, neurosurgery, nephrology, urology, plastic surgery, paediatric surgery, medical and surgical gastroenterology.
Around 12 structures including the skin ward would be demolished for the establishment of the new centre, M.A.Aleem, Vice-Principal, K.A.P.Viswanatham Medical College, told The Hindu . Transplant procedures and trauma care will also get an uplift, officials confirmed.
The Minister inspected various departments including the outpatient centre, intensive care unit, haemophilia, neo natal, casualty and surgery wards. He also examined diagnostic facilities like MRI scan and x-ray units, apart from scrutinizing inpatient and outpatient registers.

KSRaj August 22nd, 2011, 07:54 AM I disagree.
Once we have regular updates then we may consider starting of new threads.
Well, in my opinion, Transportation should be separate from Infrastructure as it is for other cities. Srirangam thread can stay as a special case being a pilgrimage center - not for the sake of real estate.

deepu051993 August 22nd, 2011, 10:23 AM Lukewarm response to anti-corruption protest in Trichy
The 'India Against Corruption' movement is slowly gaining pace, with several residents pouring on to the streets to support Anna Hazare's fight against graft. On Sunday, residents formed a human chain along the Cauvery bridge which connects Srirangam with Trichy city.
R Muthukumar, one of the co-ordinators of the Trichy chapter of the movement admitted that the response or support to Anna Hazare-led movement from the city may be lukewarm if compared to other political rallies, but its significance should not be gauged by only numbers. "Even those who did not participate in the human chain today (Sunday) like our brothers and sisters at home are giving us moral support in the protest," he said.
He, however, said the support in the fight against corruption will stabilise in the coming days with more people expected to join. Muthukumar also said every time, IAC members sought police permission to hold solidarity meetings, they inevitably asked them whether any VIP would be attending the meet.
"It is a growing movement, and we have planned the second candlelit rally from Gandhi Market to Main Guard
Gate, a distance of 3-km on Wednesday," Muthukumar added.
Last week, Trichy organised a rally
expressing solidarity with the Anna
Hazare-led movement, followed by a one-day token fast by about 100
persons drawn from various people's organisations, including Exnora. On Friday, a large number of students participated in a candlelit procession from Srirangam Corporation Park to Ammamandapam.

Trichy_Arun August 22nd, 2011, 05:18 PM Industrial corridor needed from trichy.
Similar to the Madurai-Tuticorin Industrial corridor, we need an industrial corridor from trichy. Trichy-perambalur area has lot of vacant lands, and many industries are coming in this road.

bajk August 22nd, 2011, 07:48 PM He was clear in his mind when he joined Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) shortly after graduation that he would do something on his own in a few years. A short stint at VSSC, but his heart was in Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd at Tiruchi, where he had gone as an engineer-trainee, while still in college. Sure enough, he joined BHEL in 1975 and quit four years later, to start a business on his own — as a sub-contractor to the public sector company.
Today, the company that he started along with some of his friends has grown in size, competing for orders with BHEL itself and has attracted private equity investment.
This is Mr K. Subburaj, Chairman, Cethar Ltd. “From my childhood I wanted to do something on my own,” says the 61-year-old Mr Subburaj, son of an agriculturist from Virudhunagar in Tamil Nadu.
“As an engineer I am highly satisfied,” he says, as he talks about Cethar Ltd (till recently Cethar Vessels Ltd), where he charts newer businesses for the 30-year-old company. He quit BHEL in April 1979 and started Cethar with a seed capital of Rs 13,000, as a sub-contractor to BHEL for piping work. In the first full year, Cethar employed about 50 people and reported a turnover of Rs 8 lakh. Last year, it ended with a turnover of Rs 2,436 crore and hopes to touch about Rs 3,250 crore this financial year. “This year we initially felt we would do about a billion dollars — Rs 4,500 crore — but many of the projects are not moving the way we anticipated,” he says.
Wasn't there any opposition from his wife and family when he quit a secure public sector job? “I never consulted anybody. I told my wife in the evening after I had resigned,” he says matter-of-factly.
In any case, Mr Subburaj was confident that he would do well as a sub-contractor to BHEL. Even if he failed, he knew he could join some other company. That is why he decided to locate his venture too in Tiruchi and all of Cethar's expansions have been in the same place. Now, Cethar is getting ready a plush office, its own, also in Tiruchi, where it will move to shortly.
Mr Subburaj's journey as an entrepreneur has not been without its bumps. When he started making power plant equipment, he started off trying to popularise a technology that was widely used. He relied on the private sector rather than the State utilities for orders. He believed that technology can be sourced from anybody, which is what he has been trying to convince the power sector administrators in the country. He has had a few tie-ups for technology, learning along the way and now competing against the big boys for supplying power plant equipment.
Why the name Cethar? Each letter of the name stood for a line of business that the company was in. Now that it is entering new areas, Mr Subburaj says businesses will have to be found for a few letters in the company's name. Cethar has hired consultancy firm Deloitte to draw up a business plan. To begin with, Cethar will enter the construction business and hopes to start marketing this business by the third quarter of this year. It hopes to get into the roads sector. Also on the anvil are a 30-bed speciality hospital that will open shortly and a 300-bed multi-speciality hospital by 2013 end. You guessed it right, both of them in Tiruchi. Cethar will have another company Cethar Electricals, which will get into electrical balance of plant (all those equipment other than boiler, turbine and generator).
In 2010, Cethar raised Rs 370 crore from private equity firm Barings with an option for Rs 100 crore more, giving about 20 per cent of its stake to Barings. “We wanted capital and we wanted somebody who will give the company a good valuation,” says Mr Subburaj. “We felt quite comfortable with them. Any investment of this kind will give some visibility — to your bankers, to the investing community.”
Mr Subburaj says that he is not involved in the day-to-day running of the company. His brother Mr N.K. Pothiraj and other senior professionals take care of that, while he devotes his time to business development, charting out new areas to enter. Next year, he expects his brother's son, who is studying management in the US and who has a post graduate qualification in thermal engineering, to join the company.
Management professionalism exists in the company, he says. He does not buy the argument that an owner or a promoter, especially with a professional qualification, cannot be described as professional in approach. “If you have 40-50 per cent stake, how would you not participate in the day-to-day management,” he asks. “Professionalism,” he adds, “is about how you manage the company, have you set business rules and how the decision-making is done.”
Most engineering graduates are happy doing something in IT rather than hard core manufacturing. Why is that? He admits that it is a lot harder for engineering graduates to become entrepreneurs in the manufacturing sector now, than what it was when he started out. That is because the banking system has changed, he says. Earlier, lending institutions were into development banking. But, now, they want the ventures they fund to start making profits from day 1. “It is commercial financing. Not development banking. That is the biggest challenge for an entrepreneur,” he says.

Sounds good friend. But we dont have much info to update about these two areas. We cant update about the constituencies info in this thread.
Also if we need to update about temple related news and events, then we can better change it as "Trichy - Pilgrimage Centres". So that we will get an oppurtunity to update about the pilgrimage centres of all religions. Trichy deserves such thread because its one of the cities in TN which has many famous temples, many century old Durga's and churches.

bajk August 24th, 2011, 05:00 AM The call made by Tiruchi District Tiny and Small Scale Industries' Association (TIDITSSIA) for making Tiruchi the second capital of the State has struck a chord with the industrial community.
Emphasising that a Secretariat Bench in Tiruchi would result in tremendous economic push to the entire central region, the TIDITSSIA has suggested that a Minister be posted here exclusively to coordinate with all other departments to bring about the intended economic transformation.
The need for people from the central districts to travel to Chennai will be obviated to a large extent. The presence of Madurai High Court Bench at a comfortable distance would serve as a complementary factor, the TIDTISSIA believes.
Since Chief Minister Jayalalithaa represents Srirangam constituency, a secretariat bench functioning as the CM's camp office will hold a higher significance, the association president S. Sridharan said. Attributes of an international airport, vantage location and presence of quality educational institutions qualify Tiruchi for the status of second capital, he explained.
While there is no dearth of blue collared jobs, thanks to the presence of BHEL, the two ordnance factories, Golden Rock workshop, Cethar Limited, and other industries, a push to the IT sector will create opportunities for white collared jobs, according to the industrial community.
“Once the Chief Minister invites top IT players to start operations from Tiruchi, other developments will fall in place,” said K. Subburaj, Chairman, Cethar Limited.

flyngbroomstick August 24th, 2011, 05:04 AM Accident-prone stretches in five districts to be identified
Recurring instances of fatal accidents in the Tiruchi Range have prompted law enforcing authorities to identify accident-prone stretches in the five districts falling under the range; analyse the causes and suggest measures besides initiating remedial steps to check accident rates.
The law enforcers have decided to go about in a methodical way in their fresh endeavour to bring down accident rates.
Accordingly, police officers have been asked to handpick five accident-prone stretches in each sub division in the range that comprises Tiruchi, Perambalur, Karur, Pudukottai and Ariyalur districts.
The Tiruchi Range alone accounts for a total number of 17 sub divisions, each of which is a headed by a Deputy Superintendent of Police, and over 100 police stations. Upon identifying the chosen stretches in each sub division, police officers would analyse the causes for accidents and suggest remedial measures besides taking suitable steps to rectify them.
According to police statistics, the total number of fatal accidents in Tiruchi Range was 799 in the current year up to July, while the figure in respect of non-fatal accidents was 2,369.
Tiruchi district topped in fatal and non-fatal accidents with the figures being 287 and 847 respectively in the last seven months, followed by Karur where 184 fatal and 508 non fatal accidents were reported during the same period.
The number of fatal and non-fatal accidents in Pudukottai district was 182 and 595 respectively.
Perambalur and Ariyalur districts witnessed 85 and 61 fatal accidents respectively.
The idea behind this latest effort is to go about in a systematic manner by taking up five chosen stretches in each sub division, instead of taking up the entire district, and analyse in detail the causes behind road accidents and initiate preventive steps, said the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Tiruchi Range, A. Amalraj.
The other stretches in each district would be taken up subsequently.
In a bid to address the problem in a more scientific manner, plans are afoot to embark on a digital mapping exercise, which would aid in plotting accident-prone locations, Mr.Amalraj said.
Tiruchi district tops the list in fatal and non-fatal accidents
799 fatal accidents reported in Tiruchi Range up to July this year
isham_9626 August 25th, 2011, 06:32 AM A new 8,000-tonne hydraulic press was commissioned at the Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, Tiruchi, by the company chairman and managing director B.Prasada Rao on Wednesday.
The machine, installed at a cost of Rs. 150 crore, is primarily used for manufacturing drums for steam generators. The new facility will help in increasing the production of boiler drums, a critical component of power plants, of different capacities like 500 MW, 600 MW and 700 MW.
The commissioning of the machine supplied by M/s Siempelkamp, Germany, assumes importance in the wake of BHEL, Tiruchi, manufacturing and supplying over 100 boiler drums for its various thermal power projects across the country this fiscal.
Boiler drums are the largest single component in a boiler structure weighing up to 250 metric tonnes for a typical 500 MW boiler and erected at an altitude of 72 metres. The size of a typical 500 MW drum is 24 metres long with a diameter of 2.1 metres.
M.K.Dube, Director, Industrial Systems & Products (IS&P), BHEL, A.V.Krishnan, Executive Director, BHEL, Tiruchi and other senior executives of BHEL were present on the occasion. Mr.Dube inaugurated a CNC Horizontal Boring machine on the occasion.
Earlier, Mr.Rao, who was on a day's visit to BHEL, Tiruchi, went around the facilities before reviewing the operations of the unit. He was accompanied by Mr.Dube, Director (IS&P) and Atul Saraya, Director (Power), BHEL, a company press release issued here said.

Hundreds of students, professionals, businessmen, pensioners, government employees, and housewives participated in the rally that reflected the concern of masses over the health of Anna Hazare and the reluctance of the government to tackle corruption convincingly.
Carrying placards with the inscriptions ‘I will not pay bribe', ‘If not you, then who?', ‘If not now, then when', in both English and Tamil, and raising slogans demanding Jan Lokpal Bill and Corruption Free India, the participants marched from the Gandhi Market to Teppakulam via Big Bazaar Street and NSB Road, evoking admiration of the thousands of passers-by along the busy route exceeding two km.
The rising support for IAC movement's ‘second freedom struggle' symbolized the complete faith in the efforts made by Team Anna for the important national cause of eradicating corruption, Muthukumar Ramalingam, coordinator – IAC Tiruchi, said.
