kingsdl76 September 27th, 2007, 07:50 AM Wow!!... Athens is one of those cities that seems far larger than it actually is. I read online that Athens city proper only has a population of just under 800,000 and the metro has a population of about 3.8 million!! Thats interesting because if feels and looks larger and more dense than Paris or London. Does anybody else agree?
cmoonflyer September 27th, 2007, 07:53 AM Nice thread with many awesome pics !

Various forumers have suggested the real metro population is closer to 6million. I don't know if that is true, but it wouldn't surprise me.
Giorgio September 27th, 2007, 01:50 PM If you ask me it is indeed true.
Lots of forumers though will try to also disprove that theory.
Like you guys have stated, there is no way this city has a population of 3.8 million, unless the endless sprawl of 5 story apartments are very sparsely occupied (which I can tell you, they aren't).
The problem is when census time comes people leave Athens to return to thier families villages in the country side. This is so that their mother town can secure more government funding.
Istanbullu September 27th, 2007, 02:05 PM If what you says is true then this means that more than half of the population of Greece lives in Athens!
wow..
Giorgio September 27th, 2007, 04:11 PM I certainly think so.
Surely over 50% live in Athens...think of Greece's other major cities, they are all MUCH smaller.
Isek September 27th, 2007, 04:25 PM The agglomeration in the attica vally isn't that big. It is measuring roughly 18 km x 12 km. So many times smaller than other european cities. In wide parts the city just chaotically packed. And there are uncountable streets because the grid spacing is just about 50 m to 100 m. There is new tendencies in ground use towards the airport. But density there is very low and every house has an own olive grove.
Justme September 27th, 2007, 06:08 PM Is there a provence or region that Athens is located in? If so, how large (kmē) is it, and what is it's population.
Interesting thoughts about the time of the annual census. That would account for a big drop I suppose as usually people must state where they are at the time of the census not where they live. At least the ones I have filled out.
nastyathenian September 27th, 2007, 09:01 PM Concentrating such a big part of the Greek population in one city has been a huge mistake, mainly committed in the first post-war decades. This way e.g. a strong earthquake can easily devastate the Greek economy. The ideal population would be about 2 mln.

Athens is in Attica with a population of 3,841,408 and area of 3,808 kmē.

aliendroid October 27th, 2007, 03:40 AM I've been to athens and a greek island named chios (I think that's how you spell it)
Athens is very dense, you can feel claustrophobic but I didn't get the feeling that it was as large as 6 million.

Deanb October 27th, 2007, 02:31 PM greetings to Athens from Tel Aviv! :)

Looks like you don't know the real limits of the valley.
From its southern tip to its northern one the distance is 50kms and from the SW to the NE 35.
The valley's surface area is 430sq. kms but the city size has overpassed by far the valley's surface area, accordingly leading its size to 600 sq kms. (with metro area included it's 3808 sq kms). So the city size is similar to that of Madrid but its metro area is even larger than the Spanish capital's one.
According to statistics.gr the current population as of 07' based on the growth founded on the 2001 census is around 4,100,000. To that number we have to add some 500,000 that come from other provinces but still declare residence in their towns (despite many of them have been living in Athens for decades now); as well as some 400,000-500,000 non-resident immigrants (most of them from Albania).
Leading the current pop somewhere around the 5,000,000. But by no means 6,000,000!
The city is actually really large compared to other European cities btw.
Finally the city's density decrease substantially ones you crossed the radius of 10kms from Downtown Athens.
Bluesence October 28th, 2007, 04:00 PM It musn't be that difficult to know how much inhabitants the city really has because it's very compact unlike the cities in my country which have a lot of suburbs and people spreading their houses arround the main city, so you can't really tell where it starts or where it ends...
Nice photos anyway!
FREKI October 28th, 2007, 04:22 PM Very impressive and cool!

You now have answers why it looks dense compared to others... But the real population is surely around 5 millions, not growing that much (only +200,000 for Greece between 2001 and 2007)
AltiusAltiusAltius November 6th, 2007, 09:27 AM Are the pics taken after the bushfires this year?
Giorgio November 6th, 2007, 01:37 PM Some have been, yes.

Dimos of Athens (something like the 2kmē city of London): 39 kmē
City of Athens: 430 kmē (with all the 57 suburbs)
Current urban continuum: 552 kmē (extending eastwards)
Metropolitan Athens (Attiki): 3808 kmē and a population of 4,032,456 (2007)according with statistics.gr. The figures don't include the around 450,000 immigrants (according with statistic.gr) residing in Attiki. I must point you out that these numbers are based on the 2001 census which doesn't include the residents who live in Athens but are still registered in their towns of origin.
Density of Athens (57 suburbs): 8604/kmē (That's what you see in the pictures)
Density of Metropolitan Athens (Attiki): 1059/kmē
I still find the statistics.gr info the most reliable so far.
Justme November 7th, 2007, 12:20 AM ^^^ Interesting. Does anyone know the estimates for the number of people who were away from Athens during the census?
mbuildings November 7th, 2007, 01:56 AM stunning city
nastyathenian November 7th, 2007, 12:14 PM Hell, that is some serious density. Thanks for the pics mate ..
Being dense is not an advantage for a city, especially in hot areas like Southern Europe. Last summer the temperature in downtown Athens reached 45o C, precisely because there are lots of concrete and very few free spaces. Those days the temperature in Glyfada, where I live, 13 kms south of downtown, did not exceed 36o C, because this suburb is near the seaside.

Very true.
Though it looks fantastic for someone like me who loves a packed urban setting!
