3 of Iloilo's Many Famous Mansions. Some Mansions have been converted to schools and hospitals.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1240/1401143301_9e3fc2f862_o.jpg - owned by the Lopezes. Many of their Mansions lie along Luna St. in La Paz and in Jaro.

I haven't posted my favorite mansion in my city, The Lopez Boathouse because I couldn't find any pic in the internet. There's also an all pink mansion owned by the Lopezes. The owner is gay.

I just want to share about what I saw on TV last night. It's a report by The Correspondent on Channel 2 regarding the Php 200-million Boracay Mansion in New Manila, Quezon City which is said to be owned by former President Estrada and a gift to one of his wives, Laarni Enriquez. It was named as such because when he was in power, it had a pool that can generate waves and surrounded by white sand. It became one of the causes of his downfall. At least with the mansion featured above, the frame is still existing. One can clearly see the glory it once had. The same thing can't be said of the Boracay Mansion. It's been reduced to smithereens. It is now completely overgrown with vines and weeds. It's not even good for ghost hunting. The only ghost there is the spectre of loss for the Filipino people. 200million pesos could have gone a long way if it were recovered.

http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n37/icarus05x/Antipolo/boracay.jpg

The QC government which now owns the house by virtue of the dummy corporation's failure to pay its real estate tax dues intends to transform the controversial home into a museum. However based on the footages I saw last night, there's nothing much to enshrine

Those old mansions in Iloilo, are the still being lived-in? They look so run-down and dilapidated. Is there any concerted effort by some local/national restoration and conservation heritage society/group to renovate them and bring them to what they were like before?

Some are still being used like the mansions of the Lopezes. Lizares is now a school and Castle Hotel is now...well...a hotel. Montinola Mansion and a mansion beside SM delgado has been renovated already hence, the new paint job. The rest however are still in a sorry state. The old buildings in the downtown area are really in need of a renovation. There were some people who died because of the falling debri in the area. :ohno:

My tito has an ancestral home in Southern Cebu which is quite similar to this one. I think the trees were aligned in the middle and acted as center islands. They renovated some parts, added more rooms at the backyard and installed a pool.

It was kinda creepy to sleep there though...

Another mansion in Cebu of which I am aware sits on top of Capitol hills, the infamous haunted house owned by the Villalons. Their lot was fairly huge and the house as well. It had a great view of the city. As far as I can remember, I think it was four storeys and had a little bell tower on top. I think Pope John Paul II slept there when he visited Cebu.

I'll try to take pics once I get back to Cebu.

^^ Thats right.. and so the name "Sugar Mansions." A lot of those kind dot along our Rizal Boulevard, owned by the richest sugar lords way back then..

Many of those sugar mansions, including those of the Sierras near the Dumaguete airport, are already abandoned and haunted. Me and my friends used to hangout at night (even during midnight) in one of those creepy and eerie places when we were still at the peak of our craziness some years ago.

One thing about these sugar mansions, most of them are simple and architecturally sound. Many sugar mansions I saw feature large and imposing roman or european columns in their front yards.

These houses give me the creeps! No offense to the owners whoever they are..;) Although most of them are now converted into commercial establishments (hotel, resto, bar, cafe.. etc).. Sayang! Some are already abondoned.. These were built between the late 1800s to the eraly 1900s

They look like way ahead of its time. Actually these houses reminded me of the typical old houses in Louisiana.

I can't help but coming up with this theory that those houses in Louisiana might be influenced by the Bahay na Bato architecture of the Philippines. I remembered that many early Filipino settled there all the way back in 1700's known as Manila men or it could be the other way around.

The Archidocesan Chancery of San Fernando, Pampanga (former Dison Mansion) is currently being restored thanks to Auxiliary Bishop Pablo "Ambo" David. This is great news for church heritage. Bishop Ambo got a copy of the old photo of the chancery and is trying to bring it back to its original form. To date, the ugly windows that covered the balconies and the small portico added to the facade have been removed. The structure also received a fresh layer of paint.

^^ yes they do ;) well if you visit palatial homes in PI they do have their own chapel or prayer bldg. ...only in the Philippines? :D

Having your own religious structure within your residence is not only in the Philippines. I am guessing it began during the colonial period since this trend is also found in Mexico and other former parts of the Spanish Empire and even in Brazil. We studied about this in my Mexican History class and we also went to an exhibit of Latin American Arts during the Colonial period in LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Arts) and mostly are religious oriented. They had this Huge crucifix and Altars that you'll think we're from old cathedrals or basilicas but nope they're from private churches or chapels.

We weren't allowed to take pictures so here is just one I found on the net from the exhibit.
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1435/1023469852_214da1ee05.jpg
This is just the upper (or maybe the lower, I can't remember exactly which.) half of a 15-20 ft. Altar from a private chapel.

Daanbantayan, Cebu

Owned by Cebuana Philanthropist Mariquita Yeung-Salimbangon. I was able to stay in this house for one night.

According to a friend, this "guest house/resort house" which is just along the beach was demolished recently to pave way for the construction of a hotel.

If I remembered it correctly, one of the "maids" said that this had around 50 rooms. Each room was furnished with queen sized beds with each having its own toilet and bathroom.

Quite similar to Southville..I wish there'd be less of gated communities though. I don't want a big gap between the rich and poor.

Seriously, I am wondering why Spain never built a palatial structure in the Philippines much like El Escorial o kahit kasing modest lang ng mga Colonial Palaces sa Latin America.

January 5th, 2008, 09:58 PM
^^ Partly true. In my opinion, we did not have the resources such as those in the Americas (ex. gold, silver, marble, etc.) Also, those magnificent structures in Latin America were funded by the silver and gold that had a high value in Europe that made it possible to have those structures to be built.

Secondly, it's the location. We were mostly made into a trading hub between two continents. We WERE important due to the fact that Asia was the next business partners/traders. The constant earthquakes and typhoons are also to blame. The Europeans did not have the architectural technology to cope with our surroundings at that time (in the beginning). Lastly, the colonies in the Americas gained Independence. The Spanish coffer cannot pay for those structures without it's economic source of income.

P.S.

I also forgot to mention that inflation happened because of the huge amount of gold and silver that arrived from Seville and it devalued the market. Therefore, it made it less profitable.

Dati akala q The Mansion lang ang summer residence na itinayo ng americans sa Baguio City..!!

History:

The American Residence in Baguio is a site of enduring diplomatic, military, and cultural significance in American and Philippine history. Completed in 1940 during the Commonwealth period, the Residence survived the ravages of World War II and a great earthquake in 1990.

Originally conceived of as the summer residence of the American Governor-General, the residence continues to be a favored site for representing America's broad interests in the Philippines. Though the advent of air conditioning has made it unnecessary for the Philippine Government to formally move to Baguio for the summer months, much of its leadership transfers there for working vacations. The annual post-Christmas reception at the Residence is a highlight of the calendar year with the Philippine President and members of the cabinet in attendance.

Now it serve as the Ambassador's Residence in Baguio City ^8^

though short of being a mansion and neither is it palatial, this post-WWII (circa 1947) was for a period of time, the largest house in Pardo, Cebu City. Before my great-great grandparents died (my lolo's--maternal side--parents) it used to have a landscaped frontyard--now occupied by a Smart Cellsite--and a fountain featuring one of a few remaining statues that used to abound in Cebu's parks (apparently my great-great grandfather either bought it from the city government as a gift for one of his children, or commissioned a replica)

in the future, i plan to renovate it and resurrect the house into an upscale themed-restaurant

Lizares-Rodriguez Mansion, Lizares St. Bacolod city

built in 1938, it is the centerpiece of the Lizares Family compound, it is privately owned, nobody actually lives there but it is used by the family during special occasions, the family members live in mansions surrounding the swimming pool at the back of this house...

this is not my pic, got this from Roxie Yap's blog

The Controversial Arlegui Presidential Guest House!!

According to the Malacañang website, the house is "a remodeled and enlarged 1930s mansion owned by the Laperal family. It later housed the Japanese Embassy, the National Library and the Presidential Economic Staff, one of the agencies that was later merged with another to constitute the present National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA). Mrs. Marcos doubled the size of the mansion when it was converted to a guesthouse; it now has two towers where it used to have one."

^^The old municipal hall was converted into a hospital, if i'm not mistaken across the old St. Andrew's church. And most probably, that mansion would be demolished because it is situated into what is now Coastal Road, if sa Parañaque nga yan. Time to research.

I've researched about it and this is the source of that picture and info:
http://www.metrozines.com/msoc.php?articleID=fde5a9742697ae56cfb256fda1664b91&big_pic_main=msoc_2007_n02_p088_a01_v02.jpg#view_pic

it says:
The Garcias were one of the leading families in the islands at the time -- the family residence on the beach in Paranaque was said to be second only to Malacanang Palace in opulence. Extant pictures show a large, European-inspired residence, the back of which had expansive space for large receptions, and a swimming pool. Afraid that their home might be appropriated by the Japanese military forces, patriarch Adolfo Garcia sold the property towards the end of WWII for the princely sum of P300,000 paid for in the soon worthless "Mickey Mouse" money. Nevertheless, the family retained enough assets, including real estate, in the postwar years.

Church rescues art deco mansion

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Philippines--An art deco-style mansion, designed by architect Fernando Ocampo for a relative here and bought by the Archdiocese of Manila as the official residence of Pampanga bishops, has been restored to its original magnificence.

The Arsobispado de Pampanga, formerly the Dison house on A. Consunji Street in Barangay San Jose here, has been renovated in time for the 60th anniversary of the Archdiocese of San Fernando as a diocese, says Bishop Pablo Virgilio David, who supervised the heritage conservation project.

The house was built in 1935 for the couple Luis Dison and Felisa Hizon, Ocampo's aunt on his mother Leoncia's side who married Basilio Ocampo, gobernadorcillo (colonial governor) of San Fernando.

Msgr. Prudencio David, the vicar general of the Archdiocese of Manila, mediated its purchase in 1948, which was approved by Archbishop Michael Doherty and Auxiliary Bishop Rufino Santos, a Kapampangan who later became the first Filipino cardinal.

Why the meticulous care?

The Pampanga diocese is a "daughter" of the Manila archdiocese, says David, the bishop.

The cost of the two-story structure and the one-hectare lot on which it sits is not known to older priests. Some surmise it went for P300,000.

Ocampo first worked on the Dison house and later became involved in the restoration of the war-damaged Manila Cathedral.

David says Santos not only hired a Kapampangan architect to design the house, he also employed builders and craftsmen from the province.

House survives WWII

Thanks to a Japanese gardener that the Dison couple hired to create a genuine Japanese garden, the Dison house survived the ravages of World War II.

Treated fairly by the couple, the gardener, who turned out to be a military officer, reciprocated by protecting the mansion.

After the war, the Dison family relocated to Manila and decided to sell the house to the Archdiocese of Manila. It was not known if the decision to move out of Pampanga was because of the peasant rebellion.

The mansion's first tenant was Cesar Ma. Guerrero, the first bishop of the diocese of San Fernando. His term was from 1949 to 1957.

The house was witness to Guerrero's devotion to the Virgin de los Remedios under whose auspices he began the crusade for peace when the province was rocked by agrarian unrest. The Virgin Mary's canonical image has been enshrined in a chapel beside the house. The devotional practice continues to this day.

Full circle

So when David agreed to restore the Dison house, he had, in a way, come full circle. It was David's maternal grandfather, Victoriano Siongco, owner of the Catholic Trade Center, who had carved Mary's image in the chapel.

Guerrero's successor, Bishop Emilio Cinense, lived in the mansion during his term from 1957 to 1975 and three years later when he, as archbishop, saw the transition of the San Fernando diocese to an archdiocese on March 11, 1975.

For a decade beginning in 1978, Archbishop Oscar Cruz stayed in the room that Cinense had built at the Mater Boni seminary, about two kilometers from the Arsobispado.

The present resident, Archbishop Paciano Aniceto, has also been here since 1989.

Witness to events

The archdiocese found use for the mansion as the office of the econome (finance officer) and mandated organizations like Adoracion Nocturna, Mayap A Balita publications and the Association of Parochial Schools.

During the Marcos regime and up to now, Task Force Detainees of the Philippines has held office here, launching many civil liberty campaigns and fact-finding missions for desaparecidos (the disappeared).

The Social Action Center of Pampanga had its roots here in 1988, providing a venue for development workers who, in 1991, faced a big challenge in disaster management following Mt. Pinatubo's eruptions.

The mansion, having witnessed so many significant events, was worn out by decades of use. Restoration was in order.

David says Aniceto, 70, gave him a free hand in the undertaking, working with a P1-million budget.

Alterations
Before the restoration began in July 2006, David says the roof was leaking, the gutters were broken and the wooden floors creaked or sagged.

Through years of use, the mansion's architecture had been altered. Glass panels covered entirely the verandas on the first and second floors, shutting out the elements harmful to the structure.

Additional panels hid the high ceilings and folding walls. A service staircase from the dining area to the second floor had been removed. Some of the callado, originally in harp design, were missing. The French windows were permanently closed. Air-conditioning units had been installed in the wrong places.

Without formal training, David established the mansion's original features "by taking a closer look at the house."

He also relied on his personal familiarity with old houses and tapped a network of workers in the wood-carving village of Betis, his birthplace.

Almost done

Work, as of last week, was 85 percent completed, David says, adding that at this rate, the house has once again become a "fitting residence of the archbishop."

On the first floor, two rooms have been converted into the offices of David and Bishop Roberto Mallari. The main hall serves as a conference room. The smaller room next to it is an office, complete with computers. The dining area and kitchen are clean and tidy.

The main staircase to the second floor is elegant, leading to a room that has been converted into a chapel. Here, there is an image of the Virgen de los Remedios on a refurbished altar.

The 14 Stations of the Cross, made by wood artisans, fit well on the 14 panels like they belonged there.

David has reserved the adjoining room for the archbishop. Another room serves as a property office. The bigger hall is now a library with some heirloom pieces donated by Good Shepherd nun Tess Feliciano of Magalang town.

Happy ghosts

From the warehouse, they found two posters of national eucharistic congresses in 1929 and 1937 that have been framed. There is a concrete bust of Pope Paul VI and portraits of Pope Pius XII, John XXIII, John Paul II and Pope Benedict.

A mesa altar that David found in the warehouse of the Dominican Sisters in Apalit town has been refurbished, and now graces a corner in the hallway.

The tiles--Malaga upstairs and bronze-lined on the first floor--have been polished for a bright shine. A few pieces of wooden furniture, capia among them, were put to good use by replacing the worn-out parts with recycled pieces.

The efforts seemed to have appeased the unseen occupants.

"The ghosts are quiet now. On the first night I slept here, I slept soundly. The spirits must be happy now," David says.

The heritage conservation work faces a threat, though. The Department of Public Works and Highways plans to raise the road by one meter, which would put it on the same level as the base of the house.

This is the beach rest mansion of the magnate Lopez clan. Built in early 20th Century, it has been a witness to glamorous parties and posh lifestyle of the Lopezes and friends. Today, the house is newly renovated and still used by the said clan.
