View Full Version : ROTTERDAM | Coolsingeltower | 156m | 40 fl | Pro
SkyBridge September 21st, 2007, 12:49 AM Coolsingeltower
Height: 156m
Architect: Christian de Portzamparc
Type: Office tower (World HQ "Robeco")
First pile: Q3 2008
This tower is part of the amazing construction boom in Rotterdam. In the exact heart of the city centre, this beautiful tower designed by French wizard Christian de Portzamparc will house parking, office space for Robeco and a new theatre. The entry is located at the most important boulevard of Rotterdam: the Coolsingel.
Rumour has it that just behind the tower, a 116m residential tower (also by Portzamparc) is planned. This is unconfirmed though.

Boogie September 21st, 2007, 12:52 AM It's different than other Rotterdam's towers.
SkyBridge September 21st, 2007, 01:11 AM Personally, I like the change. What's your opinion?
Llinass September 21st, 2007, 12:47 PM Netherlands modern architecture just wonderful. mmmm can't wait to see Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Hague, Utrecht. And this new tower looks awesome
Splish September 21st, 2007, 12:57 PM It looks great, congrats to Rotterdam and Nederlands
AMS guy September 21st, 2007, 12:59 PM This tower looks okay, but I still can't get over that traumatic experience after the previous design of a 180 m. high tower had been cancelled. :ohno:
Boogie September 21st, 2007, 01:12 PM Personally, I like the change. What's your opinion?
This tower is freshness for Rotterdam and it could be new quality for this city. The design of it looks grerat.
Flogging Molly September 21st, 2007, 01:14 PM Great tower. Love it.
Gerard September 21st, 2007, 02:40 PM Great news and a great tower for Rotterdam.
carfentanyl September 21st, 2007, 03:07 PM Eventhough I'm happy with this new tower, I would have been happier if the former 185m plan was realised:

Dennis September 21st, 2007, 03:17 PM the 186m tall plan was alot better, but love the new one too! very urban :)
xlchris September 21st, 2007, 03:28 PM ^^I agree, but this design is much better. And we just have to wait. 200m is a long way to go...
ZZ-II September 21st, 2007, 04:16 PM the new design look really good :)
Myster E September 21st, 2007, 05:01 PM Rotterdam really is on a construction frenzy at the moment, I'm getting lost on just how many scrapers are being constructed/approved/proposed for the city.
The 180-200m proposal looks fine, but this design looks more striking and daring, I'm sure you guys will be getting a supertall in the near future.
Boogie September 21st, 2007, 05:28 PM I wish You supertall too. The name of this tower is funny- Cool|single|tower.
Racingfreak September 21st, 2007, 05:32 PM I like this new coolsingeltoren, but the other that was 185M was much better!
Apostle September 21st, 2007, 06:37 PM I wish You supertall too. The name of this tower is funny- Cool|single|tower.
Cool is the old name of this part of the city (even before it was within city-limits, around 1850), a "singel" is a waterway as seen in the picture below. And tower. Oh well. That's a 156 meter tall building. ;)

Coolsingel around 1900

Skyscrapercitizen September 21st, 2007, 06:45 PM Great project for Rotterdam skyline, the top will be striking!
AMS guy September 21st, 2007, 06:46 PM ^^ Car traffic should be thrown away from Coolsingel now, by diging out the old canal. Rotterdam centre would be more cosy then. ;)
Marijn24 September 21st, 2007, 07:31 PM verry nice one!!!
Apostle September 21st, 2007, 09:40 PM ^^ Car traffic should be thrown away from Coolsingel now, by diging out the old canal. Rotterdam centre would be more cosy then. ;)
Not really possible, with the metro-line and the Beurstraverse underground passage underneath the road. Though I would really like to see that there. Would give a lot of atmosphere to this place.
MasonicStage™ September 21st, 2007, 10:12 PM wow...:applause: it sure looks nice!
marocboy September 21st, 2007, 10:16 PM Beautiful/prachtig!
sebastiao September 21st, 2007, 10:25 PM The quality of the design is magnificent, but somehow the building does not look good next to the Hilton and the former Slavenburg building...
Boogie September 21st, 2007, 10:31 PM Cool is the old name of this part of the city (even before it was within city-limits, around 1850), a "singel" is a waterway as seen in the picture below. And tower. Oh well. That's a 156 meter tall building. ;)
Interesting. So, the name of this part of city is... cool. What means "cool" in Dutch?
Eric Offereins September 21st, 2007, 10:33 PM cheers to this magnificent tower.
Apostle September 21st, 2007, 11:17 PM Interesting. So, the name of this part of city is... cool. What means "cool" in Dutch?
According to the Van Dale dictionary, it means 'apparently untouched'. I didn't know, apart from the english meaning, it has no other meaning in dutch. :)
Skyscrapercitizen September 21st, 2007, 11:30 PM Maybe cool comes from coal...
But at least this ís one cool single tower.
Illegal_Alien September 21st, 2007, 11:34 PM Cool = Kool (That stuf you can eat) i think.
Skyscrapercitizen September 21st, 2007, 11:36 PM http://www.anchel.nl/etenblog/2006/10_OKT/boerenkool.jpg
maybe... :)
Dray September 22nd, 2007, 12:48 AM the 186m tall plan was alot better, but love the new one too! very urban :)
I prefer the new design to the old one, even though the height is 30 meters less.
R@ptor September 22nd, 2007, 01:07 AM I thinks the design is OK, but a 20m height increase would do wonders. Not only for the skyline, but also for the design. Right now it looks a bit short and too wide.
xlchris September 22nd, 2007, 03:45 PM ^^ Car traffic should be thrown away from Coolsingel now, by diging out the old canal. Rotterdam centre would be more cosy then. ;)
Is there a cannel on the old place? Would be nice if they bring it back. But Rotterdam's Coolsingel looks like a very nice way. Reminds me of other big cities!
Lieven September 26th, 2007, 02:04 AM Cool = Kool (That stuf you can eat) i think.
cabbage that is
Apostle September 26th, 2007, 07:34 AM Well, the name "Cool" was mentioned in a official document as long ago as the year 1280 so I don't think it has anything to do with cabbage. :)
HD September 26th, 2007, 11:51 AM and there was no cabbage before 1280?
anyway, great project. probably the best in rotterdam.
Boogie September 26th, 2007, 01:20 PM It seems the tower will has sky gardens. I love it.
DAMN I m good September 26th, 2007, 02:22 PM http://www.anchel.nl/etenblog/2006/10_OKT/boerenkool.jpg

Phobos September 26th, 2007, 03:45 PM I love the crystal shape of this tower. It will have a good impact in Rotterdam's skyline.
th0m September 26th, 2007, 04:02 PM Netherlands modern architecture just wonderful. mmmm can't wait to see Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Hague, Utrecht. And this new tower looks awesome
de Portzamparc isn't Dutch though ;)

SkyBridge September 26th, 2007, 07:19 PM de Portzamparc isn't Dutch though ;)
Portzamparc was assisted by the Dutch architect Taco Pino in this design :)
Dray September 27th, 2007, 02:00 AM Please talk in English here!
mmmmmmmh, I love Dutch Dikes he says, I think.
th0m September 27th, 2007, 11:47 AM Portzamparc was assisted by the Dutch architect Taco Pino in this design :)
Okay, didn't know that...
I like the contrast between the vertical facade and the open 'cuts' from this facade with a simple glassy surface.
Racingfreak September 27th, 2007, 06:31 PM mmmmmmmh, I love Dutch Dikes he says, I think.
He said
''I love dutch Food''
Dale October 2nd, 2007, 06:39 AM Wasn't Taco a famous Dutch pop singer ?
xlchris October 2nd, 2007, 10:06 AM Where is this thread going?
Racingfreak October 2nd, 2007, 03:46 PM Where is this thread going?
This Tread is going offtopic:lol:
Untill now we continues to talk about the tower.
Eric Offereins October 3rd, 2007, 06:53 PM Construction should start end next year, so there is still a lot of room for bull%^&t ;)
Racingfreak October 3rd, 2007, 09:29 PM ^^ So we have more than 1 year to talk in this tread, for the construction begins. That means: a lot of spam:lol:

I prefer the design posted on the first page though.
Densetsu May 22nd, 2008, 07:41 PM Rotterdam is getting better with these projects every year! :okay:
Ni3lS May 22nd, 2008, 10:19 PM This is one of the best projects in Rotterdam.
I prefer the design posted on the first page though.
Something is changed ;)
EPA001 May 22nd, 2008, 10:27 PM This design was turned down by the committee that decides on what is going to be built in the City of Rotterdam. The design is too much a stand alone design which did not take its setting and place in the city seriously enough. The architect (Christian de Portzamparc) is now studying on a new plan which has to take the comments of the committee serious.
Ni3lS May 22nd, 2008, 11:05 PM Thanks for the exact information EPA001 :)
citysight November 4th, 2008, 11:36 PM very nice tower for rotterdam ,i hope they will start soon !!
Eric Offereins November 16th, 2008, 08:37 PM ^^ The tower has become victim to the credit crisis. :(
Cristii November 16th, 2008, 08:40 PM That's too bad, would've looked good.
xlchris November 17th, 2008, 07:57 PM Stupid crisis....it stopped one of the best looking towers of Rotterdam...:(
citysight November 20th, 2008, 06:36 PM :cry:that's for sure, i'ts thew second time
