Just a few hours from the hustle and bustle of manila lies the idyllic island of Mindoro, on the northern end can be found puerto galera a wild life heaven, with tropical adventures to suit all tastes.
The natural world is here in abundance, its no wonder why it is listed on the national heritage list of WWF,
Scuba diving, trekking and island hopping are all your disposal, and after a long day soaking up the natural atmosphere the night life will keep you well dinned and entertained, fine restaurants for all culinary tastes can be found to go along with live music and dancing.
This coastal town is well known among tourists for its numerous pocket beaches and many snorkeling and Scuba diving spots. The area was designated a Man and Biosphere Reserve of UNESCO in 1973 and has some of the most diverse coral reef diving in Asia. The marine environment has benefited in recent years from the influx of tourist dollars. This has seen a huge reduction in the number of fishermen in the area, as they gain higher revenue from tourists.
Puerto Galera is a listed by the Club of the Most Beautiful Bays of the World, and is the only bay in the Philippines to be listed there.
Among the famous beaches in Puerto Galera are Sabang Beach and White Beach, which have an active nightlife with numerous bars and restaurants. Both beaches also have an array of first-class and economy-class accommodations.
Sabang beach is the main destination for foreign tourists, while White Beach remains popular with local travelers.Big La Laguna Beach and Small La Laguna Beach are considered part of Sabang with resorts lining the beaches. Big La Laguna Beach is popular for local swimmers and snorkelers. Since 2001 White beach has seen uncontrolled development. New restaurants and places to stay are rapidly encroaching on the beach itself and little remains of the once charming beach. Puerto Galera town is a pleasant but sleepy Philippine town with few attractions. It has a large central catholic church and a Pier area, with a selection of bistros and cafes.
The Philippines is an archipelago of 7,107 islands with a total land area of approximately 300,000 square kilometers (116,000 square miles). Its 36,289 kilometers of coastline makes it the country with the 5th longest coastline in the world borders the Philippine Sea on the east, the South China Sea on the west, and the Celebes Sea on the south. The island of Borneo is located a few hundred kilometres southwest and Taiwan is located directly to the north. The Moluccas and Sulawesi are located to the south-southwest and Palau is located to the east of the islands. The Philippines (Filipino: Pilipinas officially known as the Republic of the Philippines (Filipino: Republika ng Pilipinas), is a country in Southeast Asia in the western Pacific Ocean. Taiwan lies north across the Luzon Strait. West across the South China Sea sits Vietnam. The Sulu Sea to the southwest separates it from the island of Borneo and to the south the Celebes Sea from other islands of Indonesia. It is bounded on the east by the Philippine Sea. An archipelago comprising 7,107 islands, the Philippines is categorized broadly into three main geographical divisions: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The capital city is Manila.

ANGLING/SPORTS FISHING
Angling is a method of fishing by means of an "angle" (fish hook). The hook is usually attached to a fishing line and the line is often attached to a fishing rod. Fishing rods are usually fitted with a fishing reel that functions as a mechanism for storing, retrieving and paying out the line. The hook itself can be dressed with lures or bait. A bite indicator such as a float is sometimes used.
Sports fishing in Negros Oriental has now started to gain reputation and in fact members of the organization of Filipino Anglers (FilAng) had even come to Negros Oriental to sink their hook and line in the salt and fresh waters of NegOr.
The Mabinay Highlands had become a favorite sport fishing destination. Also in the Sandurot Festival of Dumaguete, the first ever Birik-Birik Fishing Festival was held last year.

After a month's preparation, on February 24, 2011 five anglers and members of FilipinoAnglers.org flew in to Dumaguete from Manila for a taste of Dumaguete's saltwater and freshwater fishing. In coordination with the Dumaguete City Tourism Office this is a first for Dumaguete to welcome sportfishermen as part of the city's effort to promote this new industry to the tourism sector.

La Union is located in the north of Luzon (The main island)in the Philippines. Boasting impressive visibility, and one world class dive site the Tanks, 6 WW2 M10 tanks located some distance from the mainland on Fagg reef. Ranging in depth from 45m to 60m. one tank is also home to a huge moray. We have spotted mantas diving Research reef , but unfortunately dynamite fishing has all but destroyed the reefs around la union and over fishing has seriously damaged the fish population.

A great location for deep tech diving with a couple of almost undived WW2 ship wrecks still in the process of being explored, one is believed to be a Japanese sea plane tender similar to the Akitsushima found in Coron a U.S. Cargo ship at 250 feet and explore the mystery wreck at 245 feet.
This is, without doubt, the most famous site in the area. Situated a 40 min boat trip away from La Union, the reef is actually part of the shelf that marks the divide between The Lingayen Gulf and The South China Sea.
The site may also be referred to as The Tanks as three WW2 M10 tanks were dropped off a barge at the end of the war and came to rest on a ledge part of the way down the drop-off at 39m. As a result, they have become home to a wide and diverse range of marine life.
Around the tanks and on the drop-off you can expect to see wrasses, dorados, Spanish mackerel, king barracuda and leopard rays. Whitetip sharks are common and if you’re really lucky you may come across a whale shark.
It should be emphasized that the drop-off descends to some 250m and currents can carry the unwary towards it. This dive should only be taken by the experienced and a knowledgeable guide employed. This is not an easy dive.
Getting There
La Union and San Fernando are located about a four hour drive up the Northern Expressway from Angeles. It is a prime location with the Mountains and City of Baguio only an hour away. Ideal to combine a few days at the beach with some spectacular sightseeing
Three hours from Angeles City and five hours from Manila, you can take a Philippine Rabbit, Times Transit or Farinas Trans bus going north to San Fernando, La Union, Vigan or Laoag.

That's what I figure. I was born and grew up in San Fernando, La Union. I remember when I was young, scuba diving in the area was good but I figured with the pollution and illegal fishing going on, the reef in the area is gone. Too bad, I wish something can be done....

Good there's Kasay Marine Sanctuary that protects the remaining coral reefs in San Fernando. I hope may government intervention na rito. I live some 400 meters from the sea here in Bauang and there are nights that I hear explosions, I guess that's dynamite fishing

I agree....it is just sad how the government officials and local fisherman do not see the advantages of tourism. I havent been back to La Union for several years despite we still have a house there. I've seen pictures of San Fernando and it is so crowded, typical other cities in the Philippines.

If only massive urban planning in San Fernando City would be implemented then I think it won't be as crowded as what it is today.
Going back to the topic, That case (dynamite fishing) in La Union is also true in other parts of the country, i am certain of that.

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union, August 13 (PIA) -- After five successful years of surfing and dancing with the waves which drove the influx of domestic and international tourists coming in to witness the event, the La Union Surfing Break 6 (LUSB 6) was launched recently in Thunderbird Resorts, Poro Point, this city, with the local media and old-time as well as prospective sponsors by the La Union Surfing Break Management Committee.
The Committee, chaired by Attorney Rodolfo Y. Yabes, also the President of the San Juan Beach Resorts Association (SJBRASS), in cooperation with the Provincial Information and Tourism Office of the Provincial Government of La Union (PITO-PGLU), Municipality of San Juan, Department of Tourism (DOT), La Union Hotel, Resorts, and Restaurants Association (LUHRRA) and the La Union Surfing Club (LUSC), promises that this 6th LUSB will be a much bigger event.
According to Yabes, “Sumisikat ang La Union dahil sa surfing” (the province of La Union gains popularity because of this surfing). It does not just promote tourism in the province but it helps in bringing about employment as well.”
Yabes also added that due to the positive effects of this event to our tourism business, which boomed in terms of accommodations in hotel, resorts, and restaurants, more corporate sponsors are coming in, even more participants, foreign, locals, young and old, have shown so much interest to again see the huge and fascinating waves of our beaches in Urbiztondo, San Juan.
Adamor L. Dagang, PITO Chief, informed that extensive media mileage also helped a lot in sponsorship acquisition as this paved the way for the promotion of their products and services in terms of marketing.
Dagang said that as of last year’s crowd monitoring, there were more or less 7,000 participants for the three (3) days, three (3) nights event. “As of this early, hotel bookings are now full and we aim for a much higher or bigger number of participants this year.”
“A few years back, we just aimed to be the premier surfing destination in the north, but now, with the tremendous success/outcome of the past surfing breaks that we had, we will do everything possible to reach our goal that is to claim that La Union will be the next surfing capital of the Philippines”, Dagang emphasized.
Aiming to compete with well-known surf sites in the country with its captivating waves that suits all ages, LUSB 6 has more to offer this year.
Aside from the usual surf clinics, Search for Surfing Bodies 2011, Oktoberfest, sand castle fun building, Pinta Alon (Tatoo Fest), surfboard design contest, beach volleyball, there will also be Sala ti Dalluyon, Yoga-Samba session, photography contest and kite-flying competition. The province of La Union in the northern part of Luzon is one of the most popular destinations for divers who want to explore the best underwater sites in the Philippines. This province features a number of world class dive sites that attract seasoned divers and beginners.
The fascinating Fagg Reef is a great example of the many excellent diving sites that can be explored in the waters of La Union. This reef can be found between the Lingayen Gulf and the South China Sea and can be accessed after a 40 min boat trip away from the province's shores. Let me give you some of the reasons why one should head out and explore the undersea wonders of Fagg Reef.
Why Visit Fagg Reef in La Union?
World War 2 Tank Graveyard: This reef features a number of different attractions but it is best known as the undersea resting place of several World War II battle tanks. But how did these war machines end up in the bottom of the sea? Well, before these tanks can do battle on land, they often need to be transported to the battle field by sea. These M10A1E tanks came to rest on a ledge after they fell to the sea while being dropped off a barge at the end of the war.
Nature claimed these tanks and have transformed the machines as homes for a variety of marine life. One of them is said to be home a very large and cranky moray eel. If you want to see this tank graveyard, then one should visit this interesting reef.
Historical Wrecks under the Waves: This reef is home to other types historical remnants other than World War II tanks. Divers who explore these reefs will also observe the remains of a Japanese sea plane tender at 250 feet. A mystery wreck that has yet to be identified can also be explored at around 245 feet below the waves.

Diving with Sharks: Fagg Reef is one of the rare diving spots that will allow divers to swim with sharks. Divers routinely encounter Whitetip and Blacktip sharks as they explore these reefs. One might also meet a huge Whale Shark but encounters with these creatures are very rare.
Diving with Wide Variety of Marine Life: Sharks are not the only marine life that can be observed on this pristine reef. Folks who explore this popular tourist destination will also find moral eels, manta rays, wrasses, dorados, mackerels, turtles, barracuda and sea snakes.
Nearby Diving Sites: Of course, Fagg Reef is not the only good diving spot in La Union. The province also offers other locations that can fulfill the dreams of any diver. The other prime diving spots that can be found within this province include the Research Reef and the Tamayo Reef. The Research Reef features a cavern area with several tunnels that are home to lobsters and small cleaner shrimps. The Tamayo Reef boasts of tall valleys and big coral heads that are frequently visited by large groupers.
How to Get There:
To explore this prime diving sight, on must first get to the province of La Union. The province can be easily reached via buses such as Philippine Rabbit, Times Transit, or Farinas Trans that are headed north to San Fernando, La Union, Vigan or Laoag. The trip from Manila to La Union takes about 5 hours.

At the end of the week, there are plenty of options for unwinding. Being on a bus for seven hours is probably not one of them. But if the bus is headed for La Union during the surf break season, well, that changes things.
Any surfer will tell you that the trip is more than worth it. After trying surfing for the first time, even I would have to agree. Despite being very far from athletic (when I say I tried surfing, I mean I got to ride a wave for all of five seconds - after drinking around a liter of saltwater, turning black and blue all over, and becoming an expert at tumbling off the board) I can see how easy it is to fall in love with surfing.
Based on an outsider's idea of surfing, it seems obviously appealing. After all, it looks so smooth and laid-back, and let's face it, when you say "surfer," you can't help but think "cool." Of course, this is based on the flawless photos we see of surfers gliding on unbelievably large waves, or carrying their boards, arms raised to expose their perfectly-toned bodies. And don't forget the distant gaze, squinting at the sun, and the tanned skin.

LA UNION, Philippines – When asked what his favorite surfing spot is, pro surfer and musician Donavon Frankenreiter immediately says, “La Union.” Sitting in a resort in full view of La Union’s clean, beautiful beach, and its rushing waves, you know there is no hint of irony in his reply.
“For me, my favorite place is wherever I am at that moment. I just love surfing, so today was a beautiful day at the beach. You have great waves here,” he quantifies his initial response. A first-timer in the Philippines, as in La Union, the mustachioed Frankenreiter smiles, with his eyes crinkling as he looks out into the sea, and says, “It’s incredible, what a great vibe—such a great beach, nice people. It feels good to be outside of Manila, you know what I mean? It’s like, cool… like, wow, it’s a totally different scene down here.”
And adds, “It was great being in Manila too.”

It will take a 5-hour drive to Manila to get to La Union, a province in the Philippine region of Ilocos. Because you don’t need to take a plane here (unlike other equally amazing island resorts at Boracay or Coron in Palawan), this is a place that is always on the top of the list for visitors. Below are some of the activities and attractions that could be found here:

Surfing – Dubbed as the “surfing capital of the North,” La Union is a place where you can catch great waves. The breathtaking coastline is what keeps visitors coming back, and both locals and visitors from other countries go here to have their dose of good surf. Hang out with the friendly locals if you fancy, they’ll sure be able to provide you with tips on the best spots for surfing, and even share with you some of the early catch of fish and other seafood if you wake up early. The North Swell in La Union usually starts around October, and stretches on until March. The South Swell, on the other hand, starts in May and could stay until August.

travelman543 December 30th, 2011, 09:14 AM Apo Island’s true beauty lies on the success of its community-organized marine sanctuaries. It is one of the world's best and often referred to as the ‘Apo Model’. It has become an inspiration to the creation of hundreds of other marine sanctuaries in the Philippines.

To date, hundreds of different species of fish, marine life and species of corals have returned to the Island. And 28 years since the establishment of the marine sanctuary, the health of the ecosystem has improved immensely.

Launched on March 15 at the Powerplant Mall, global surf brand Aloha Baordsports announced through its president Freddy Gonzales that their patrons—whether surfers or non-surfers—are just a raffle ticket away from visiting one of Asia’s top surf destinations. Bali, of course, is always included in a surfer’s must-visit list, with such amazing waves in Padang Padang, Kuta Reef and Canggu.
Aloha Boardsports’ president Freddy Gonzales recognized the growing interest for surfing all over the globe. “More and more people are getting into surfing,” he said at the launch, which is why the brand is eagerly promoting the sport, not only in Bali but also the country’s local surfing spots.
He listed San Juan, La Union, Lanuza Bay and Siargao Island in Surigao del Norte, and Cemento Beach in Baler, Aurora as top surf spots. For the company, Surf Bound: Bali is the just beginning of promoting the sport to boost local tourism.
