View Full Version : Art Deco in Shanghai

Shanghai is mostly famous for it's new shiny skyscrapers, and is by many people wrongfully perceived as having a rather bland mix of buildings and architecture in overall.
What many don't know is that Shanghai is the home of arguably one of the largest (perhaps the largest?) collections of Art Deco architecture on the planet.

In this thread I'll (hopefully) keep posting pictures of art deco buildings in Shanghai. And anyone is of course welcome to post whatever you can find, or what you've taken yourself.

This first set is from meckleychina on Flickr.

AMAZING!

I've heard too that Shanghai has the most number of Art Deco-styled buildings in the world.

I find it interesting that a lot of the Art Deco buildings you posted were of movie cinemas or apartment buildings.

Wow I had no idea. When were these mostly built - in the 20's by the nationalists?

yeah these are amazing. Too bad architects and planners prefer those ugly commieblocks. Why don't they just keep building these kinds of buildings?

So they're building more new Art Deco buildings that come up to the street? If thats the case, then that would be awesome. It would be nice to see Shanghai with art deco filling in the gaps between glassy skyscrapers and minimal commieblocks in the next few decades. Am I being overly optimistic?

By the way, are these buildings (both old and new ones u/c) designed by Western architects or Chinese ones?

Nah, no new art deco is going up in Shanghai (or anywhere in the world, I guess). I'm rather referring to new exciting architecture in all different forms.

Both! :)
