While snapping pictures last week I struck up a conversation with one of the neighbors of W=A. She was concerned that the pedestrian path would cut through her condo complex, and explained that the units on the plaza level were not designed to have heavy traffic. Although she did say that a luxury hotel might not be that bad I reminded her that even rich people have teenagers.

I am a little confused about how all these new towers are being proposed for Chicago while the CS and the Waterview tower are on hold. in my opinion they should probably wait. exceeding demand is not what the developers are intending to do? anyone have some kind of news that will help me out?

This is a hotel, not a residency.

The buildings pictured above are condos ( in Chicago this means apartments you own ). The site that has been cleared is for a residental tower. The parking lot is where the W=A tower will go. There will be a pedestrian bridge linking the plaza of the W=A with the existing plaza on Colmbus (Sheraton hotel) with the Odgen boat slip, passing through the virtually private plaza between the existing condos.

http://lh5.ggpht.com/harry.r.carmichael/SP_SkdKIPII/AAAAAAAA1N0/fAyqFjVBtkQ/s720/2008_10_08d.JPG

Ironically the Odgen slip extended to the middle of the W=A site before the condos were built.

Very, very nice design. I think it will fit Chicago appropriately. And quite tall as well.

This building project was created over a year ago, well before the major real estate/economy bursts. Also, getting something approved is relatively easy. Financing it is obscenely more difficult, even in good times. I would be shocked if this managed to break ground within the year.

Not a word! Maybe there shouldn't be a Waldorf Astoria outside of New York. But what can you do. With the way things are going, moneys looking a little short. I don't know what going on with this project. In my eyes the boom in Chicago dies with chicago spire. If that can make it so can the rest hopefully.

I'm not surprised if this gets cancelled (hopefully not) with many other projects in fiasco in the same city, I wont get my hopes up.

The developers took a long term view from the beginning. It may take longer than expected because of the economy but this is still a prime site for condos/hotel.

He would only own me. If he would have said Waldorf Astoria wasn't started in NYC, now You've been owned.

Plus there is only one Waldorf Astoria seeing the Astor brothers only open one Hotel together. The Hilton aren't the Astor so their Hotel hold no weight bearing its name.

Alright guys,

Let me put an end to this dispute...I work for Hilton Hotels in Beverly Hills.

There are 3 layers to the Waldorf=Astoria...

There is THE Waldorf=Astoria, which is in NYC and is of course deservedly famous for being an amazing hotel.

Then, there is the Waldorf=Astoria Collection - termed as such for Hilton properties that are one of a kind, and iconic properties. These properties are not named WALDORF=ASTORIA but rather the unique name, and part of the collection. The collection includes the La Quinta Resort and Spa near Palm Springs, CA; the Biltmore in Arizona, the Casa Marina in Key West FL and a bunch of others. From the site - KNOWN FOR ITS CHARACTER, TIMELESS ARCHITECTURE AND AUTHENTIC HISTORY, THE WALDORF ASTORIA COLLECTION IS COMPRISED OF UNIQUE LUXURY HOTELS WHICH POSSESS THEIR OWN DISTINCT PERSONALITY WHILE OFFERING THE AMENITIES AND SERVICES YOU WOULD EXPECT FROM THE MOST EXTRAORDINARY HOTELS IN THE WORLD.

THEN, for some god awful reason, Hilton is taking advantage of the Waldorf Astoria brand. In my opinion this goes against the Collection statement of unique one of a kind properties, rendering the collection namesake unfit for the title. Why it isn't rebranded is beyond me.

The Waldorf=Astoria Brand, that you see in this proposal, a new one coming to Beverly Hills, and others already made or in the pipeline are apart of this brand. It'd be like the Ritz Carlton, same style and brand standards, but different locales.

So yeah, there ya go.

This tower probably won't get built, it's being proposed by the former Chicago Spire developer. They couldn't get the Spire done and doubtful they will follow through on this one either. There's a better chance of the Spire getting built, I think...But we will see what happens when the economy gets better.

saw this tidbit referring that his project was cancelled in an article today talking about lowes dropping out of block 37?...I dont remember hearing anything????

"Instead, Loews' plan becomes the latest in a string of proposed hotels that have been canceled, including a luxury Waldorf Astoria in Streeterville and a trendy Gansevoort in River North."
