Heading south brings us into the hood known as Sunnyside. It goes from Victory Blvd to the Staten Island Expwy (I-278) between Manor Rd and Highland Ave with Clove Rd. This hood is mostly residential. Originally, it was first settled as Clovenia. In 1889, a boarding house known as Sunnyside was built in which the area was later changed to. Until the postwar era, Sunnyside remained pretty rural. In 1964, Robert Moses tried to extend the Richmond Pkwy (NY 440) that would go from here to Latourette and High Rock Pks by placing ramps, but it was finally stopped after a battle from residents and enivornmentalists. In 1976, the College of State Island was founded and had its campus here until it moved to its present day location in 1993. Sunnyside still retains a lot of rural scences, while the thrwarted highway became a nature trail. Please do not confuse this hood with the one in Queens that has the same name. You can get here by taking the S53, S54, S60, S61, S62, S63, S66, S67, S91, S92, S93, X10, X11, X12, and X42 buses. Here is what you will find in Sunnyside.
