View Full Version : EE good and bad neighbours
Barto_S September 28th, 2007, 05:02 PM Poland has 7 neighbourly countries today: Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania and Russia (Kaliningrad District).
What is our opinion about these neighbours and their opinion about us?
Germany - majority of Germans don't like Poland as a state, also Poles as a people. It is visible among older people mainly.
On the other hand majority of Poles like Germans...
Czech Republic - there are many different feelings between these two nations. Poles treat Czechs with a pinch of salt, the Czechs sometimes treat Poles with contempt...
Slovakia - this small country is rather liked in Poland, I think it works in opposite direction too.
Ukraine - for some reason Poles aren't liked in Ukraine (historical memories?). Ukraine and Ukrainian people are also not popular in Poland although it is being change slowly.
Belarus - Poland doesn't accept Belarus as a state in its today's form but Belarusian people seems to be nicer than Ukrainians.
Lithuania - treated with fondness in Poland (it was a part of Polish territory in a long period of history)
Russia - Russia as a state is very unpopular in Poland, Russian people are also bad perceived. On the other side Russia is doing everything to show that Poland doesn't mean anything for this country.
So how it looks like in your countries?
bgrs September 28th, 2007, 05:11 PM Hah, Balkans are an interesting place :) Anyway, the storage on the SSC's SQL servers will not be enough for this :)
joce23 September 28th, 2007, 05:18 PM We have only good neighbours !
whatever... September 28th, 2007, 05:37 PM Lithuania ....it was a part of Polish territory in a long period of history
Damn you guys are annoying... It was a union of two states, Grand duchy of Lithuania wasn't "a polish teritory"...
as for the what this thread is about:
Russia - we have few problems and pretty much like russians themselves, but feelings for Russia as a state is a whole other story and i think i dont need to explain why...
Belarus - were our closest alies and friends since like 1200's... everyone here likes them, and though majority dont really care about lukashenko, most want him gone. It's an absurd situation - Minsk is like 150 or so km from Vilnius, and yet, it feels as if it is as far as Almaty.
Poland - dont really know. Again, most people here like poles, but most also consider them beeing arrogant and few have forgoten about Zheligowski, Pilsudski and some allie backstabing in the 1919-1921
Latvia - brothers, probably even more than that...
delfin_pl September 28th, 2007, 05:38 PM we have good neigbours, only Russians have bad reputation, my fav is Slovakia - great ski resort, nice towns, great food, second favorite is Germany- I admire their beautiful cities and autobahns.

well, change your opinion :). I never understood Ur grudge though
Verso September 28th, 2007, 07:48 PM SLOVENIA:
- Austria: model of economic success, some tensions with Carinthia (Haider), we mostly like them (now some Serbs will jump in and say we wanna be their Slavic/Balkan brothers ;))
- Italy: nervous people :D some distrust for being so much bigger than us; our only really worldly neighbor
- Hungary: no opinion :D I can't believe we border them :D
- Croatia: no comment  looking at the official policy, looks as we're one of the most hostile neighbors in Europe  of course most people fall for the politicians' BS, but surprisingly (:D) you won't see Croatians attacking Slovenians or vice-versa; but on SSC our relations are unbelievably good! :cheers1:
bgrs September 28th, 2007, 07:59 PM The neighbours from the left: Nervous, unfriendly, suspicious, choleric. We had some quarrels with them, one of which was a really BIG quarrel.
The neighbours from the right appartment: nice young family. They have a cat just like us. Friendly people.
Neighbours from the next floor: I don't know them.
Neighbours from the lower floor: two young women. Cold people. Once we had a little quarrel about the parking lots, but nothing serious.
What about yours? :) :) :)
Делян September 28th, 2007, 08:08 PM well, change your opinion :). I never understood Ur grudge though
I didn't say South-West.....
bgrs September 28th, 2007, 08:09 PM aaaahh....THIS neighbour :)
Czas na Żywiec September 28th, 2007, 08:14 PM Am I going to be banned if I "express" my opinion about certain south-eastern neighbour?
Yes.
This thread just screams lock me. :lock:
Делян September 28th, 2007, 08:24 PM OK, I'll try strating from the North and going counterclockwise......
Romania: nice people even though the only Romanians that I know live in USA. All of the Romanians that I met are very smart people. Them and the Poles are very close to our mentality. My opinion....
Serbia: I guess I should know more about it. I met several Serbs and they are totally cool....
Macedonia: I met only one Macedonian and that's it......
Greece: Sometimes it seems that they are very distant from us and sometimes it seems that they are close. Overall, they keep their distance.
Turkey: Are we neighbors with them?
Ataman September 28th, 2007, 08:29 PM Our best to worst neighbours (although none of them are bad, relatively speaking) in this order:
1.) Austria
2.) Slovenia
3.) Croatia
4.) Serbia
5.) Romania
6.) Slovakia
?.) Ukraine I almost forgot to list them.
It's a funny coincidence that our best to worst neighbours go counterclockwise (except for maybe Ukraine).

new bulgaria September 28th, 2007, 08:37 PM Turkey: Are we neighbors with them?
Neighbours are like relatives. You don't and you can't choose them, anyway, I keep an arm's length distance from this one. ^^
By the way, last week I went to a panel that discussed Turkey's bid to join the EU organized by the American Bar Association. The penalists were mostly notable, influential Turks who flew from Istanbul.
To sum it up, here is what I came up with after the three hour long presentations and discussions. The Turks are really, really, really bitter that Bulgaria, and to a smaller extent Romania, joined the EU. Bulgaria's name would come up all the time during the evening in dismay of "Look, how come Bulgaria joined the EU, but Turkey has not?".

Well I think it is difficult to make a list like this. If we look at the political side, Austria is one of our worst neighbour (poisoning Rába river, building incinerator 1km away from the border, their attempts to hinder the Schengen agreement for us, etc.). From this point of view, Slovakia is the worst, followed by Romania and Serbia, and the relations are pretty good with Croatia, Ukraine and Slovenia. If we look at the people, you can not really decide. You can not say that I like/hate this or that nation because they are nice/bad. There are a lot of helpful people in the neighbouring countries even if we don't share a common language, and I've never experienced that someone wanted to bite my head off because of speaking Hungarian. Slovakia is popular here as a touristic destination for example. However, I feel that the most popular country in Hungary is Poland though we not border them :)

I have to disappoint them but first former Yugoslavia, then Ukraine, then whatever is left from Europe will join the EU. And finally, we'll make them a partner or whatever it is called, but not a member......

Even though I have heard many stories, I have never been treated badly by Slovaks or Serbs by speaking Hungarian. I never went to Romania before, so I can't say anything positive or negative about that country.
Slovakia is popular here as a touristic destination for example. However, I feel that the most popular country in Hungary is Poland though we not border them :)
Oh yes. We also seem fairly popular among the Germans too. And now with Sarko, the French are starting to like us as well.

Marek.kvackaj September 28th, 2007, 09:41 PM Political relations
Czech republic very close relations with our west and more richer, bigger and more educated cousin...left and right political group having often sessions ...I would say 100 % good :)
Poland not much heard about Polish people ...but in press very negative picture of "Ultra catolic POLAND" and a lot people think here that Poland dont have to behave that conservative..and good think that Poland is not afraid tell what is good for Poland in EU..
Ukraine not much heard about Ukraine here, increase Ukraian studying Slovakian schools near border recently..
Austria obstacles from Austria ...highway from Wiena to Bratisava finished just now ......Schengen agreement..etc
Hungary "special relations" I would say 0% status right now...almost war status :ohno: ( when You read what saying politician here..but reality..you know people need work and have good life and enjoy evening TV)- Benes decrees,Triatlon treaty , Hungary - Slovakia relationships 1880-1919,1938-39, 1945-1989 1993-2007, hungarian minority status, Gabcikovo water Danube damm treaty.. - anyway from business point of view never has been better then now!..tourist point of view is that manyHungarian come to my town sky every year...)
new bulgaria September 28th, 2007, 09:49 PM ^^ I am still impressed by the progress of good feelings between BG and RO. Back in the past, we didn't know and didn't care about them and the other way around. Then we got stuck together in the same EU waiting room. BG initially thougth it was better than RO for its faster progress and wanted to differentiate itself from its northern neighbor. It didn't take long for circumstances to turn around and BG started lagging RO. But ever since both countries joined the EU, boyyyyy, there's been so much passion and loving between the two countries. Such a dramatic change in such a short time. Amazing!!!! BG and RO finally discovered the WIN-WIN formula.
bgrs September 28th, 2007, 09:52 PM Yep, considering I hated them so much when I was a kid. I dreamed of bombing them from a plane, cause their chlorine factory in Giurgiu was poisoning the air in my city. Actually, due to that factory, many people left the place...which later lead to a severe economic crisis in the region. And now, after jan. 2007, the town economy is booming because of them :)
Gastly September 28th, 2007, 09:52 PM Bulgaria - that wouldn't be hard :D
I'd tell you what my father and grandfather think to show you how ridicilous their opinion is :D
P.S My opinion is COMPLETELY different :D
Romania - These stupid mamaligar, gypsies, all they do is smuggle. We hate them!!!
Serbia - These corrupted, stupid villagers. All they do is smuggle. We hate them!!!
Macedonia - Oh, these betrayers, all they do is hate us the bulgarians and try do change their history-hate back. We hate them!!!
Greece - All these bastards want is to take our money and screw us. We hate them!!!
Turkey - OH!!! We were their slaves 300 years ago, they have a small minority living in Bulgaria. We hate them!!!
All in all, I like all our neigbours :)
Obviosly the older people in Bulgaria don't :D
new bulgaria September 28th, 2007, 09:55 PM ^^ Your father and grandfather don't seem to waste their feelings. You shout take them on a tour in the neighborhood. :):):)

Actually, due to that factory, many people left the place...which later lead to a severe economic crisis in the region. And now, after jan. 2007, the town economy is booming because of them :)
You were a vicious child.
zzibit September 28th, 2007, 09:56 PM I don't think it's that. Bulgaria hasn't had any major issues with Romania and we haven't been screwed over by them as much as other neighbors. In addition, the fact that the EU placed both countries in the same bracket further solidified relations. The economic outcomes are yet to realize because we know so little about one another. But seeing how the Romanians flooded the beaches and Ruse area, good things are yet to come.
bgrs September 28th, 2007, 10:02 PM You were a vicious child.
Well, my first plans were to fly with helicopter and put a big tap on the factory's chimney. But a friend of mine said it's too difficult and besides, you wont be able to see anything in the smoke. So I decided bombing the factory would be better :)
I lived just on the opposite bank of the river, in front of the factory. The strangest thing is that I liked the smell of chlorine, unlike most people (but I liked the smell of gasoline even more than that, what a junkie lol :) ). When they polluted the air, my mother used to put wet sheets on the windows. They quickly became yellow and brown over a week..
Communism wasn't so fun :)
BTW the district was new and nice back then. We had supermarkets, kindergardens, parks, etc. It was much better than our current neighbourhood in Ruse. And now, my current neighbourhood is among the best in the town...while my former place is kinda ghetto, near the industrial zone, the gypo neighbourhood and the mental hospital, a horrible place :)
Rhemaxos September 28th, 2007, 10:06 PM OK, my ratings for our neighbours.
Hungary - 10
Bulgaria - 10
Serbia - 9
Ukraine - 8
Moldova - 5 (it just seems they have no idea where they're heading... too bad)
Come on, man, 70 percents of the citizens of Moldavia are pure romanians, they are our brothers and we shouldn't mixed up their government and politics with the way common people really are. I guess it's the only country in Europe still governed by the communist party (and in the same time the poorest - what a surprise...) but anyway, let's not forget that after the WWII Moldova was scene for an incredible brutal soviet repression. More than 1 million romanians were resettled in Siberia (being replaced with russian and ukraininan ethnics) and many others died in prisons or were simply assasinated... Not to mention 50 years of continous propaganda for those who survived. So blaming moldavians for what that country has become seems somehow similar to me with blaming ill people for their sufferences...
Anyway, as regards our neighbours I would say:
The Black Sea and Moldova - 10 (both for sentimental reasons!) :)
Bulgaria and Serbia - 9
Hungary - 8
Ukraine - 7
I think, we are quite ok with all our neighbours... exept for football, of course!

new bulgaria September 28th, 2007, 10:23 PM Romania 10 - so many opportunities for both nations.
Macedonia 10 so much unutilized potential. It's a shame.
Greece 9.5 - they put in tonnes of money in BG. Now it's our turn.
Serbia 8 - they get on my nerves with their "ex-Yu sense of superiority". If they get over it and realize that the world has changed, they will be pretty cool too.
Turkey 10 for economic relations, otherwise -10! Can I use negative numbers? Kidding! Economically Turkey is the largest importer of our goods. Trade is brisk and both countries are benefiting from it. However, I just have a problem with them because of the past and I know that I get irrational here, but I just can't help it. I have to talk to my shrink about it, but she's American and will never get it anyway or charge me a double fee for having to learn Balkan history.:)
GreatMakedon September 28th, 2007, 10:30 PM Judging Macedonia's political relations with its neighbours it would have to be like this:
1) Albania- No disputes and friendly.
2) Serbia- Officially friendly but their Church is very anti-macedonian.
3) Bulgaria- Politicians are afraid to say what they think of each other, a sense of mistrust exists between these two nations.
4)Greece- loudly and clearly treats us like Dogs without a name.
Now if we look at in terms of how Macedonians feel towards our neighbours its a different story.
1) Serbia- 60% of the music played in Macedonian bars/cafes/clubs comes from this country, Serbs are viewed as brothers by many macedonians.
2) Bulgaria- People love going to Bulgaria, politics aside ive heard positive feedback regarding this country, beautiful girls there too.
3) Albania- This country is still viewed as a mysterious place, therefor we dont have any negative or positive feelings towards it.
4) Greece- We cant stand them because they hate us so much.
Kapedani September 28th, 2007, 10:35 PM Enough with Bulgaria already...we get it!!...Jesus fudging Christ.
Serbia is not our neighbor, but i really like the country and people there. i know they have same feelings about us. cheers, brothers
Why don't the Serbs move in with you guys?? If you love them so much...why don't you marry them??
If you guys decide to move in togather...give us a call...we'll help move the couches and all...the whole neighborhood will come out to help you out.
----------
Ok here's Albania...I'm bored at work so this keeps me awake. Where to start where to start...best to worst I guess.
1) Kosova...duh!
2) Italy...historic friendship, close political ties, our best economic partner. Overall no one can say anything bad about them.
3) Montenegro...sometimes we get confused with the flag...we think its us. Its like that girl who in HS was ugly and fat and then you see her a few years later and she's skinny again. The ugly part though...make-up only goes so far...but its not their fault so we don't blame them. She's nice.
4) Macedonia...they'r in the way. Overall very friendly relations in all terms. What can I say bad about them?? Too many Macedonians...not enough Albanians :p
5) Greece...half our parking lot is in their yard...so if we want to park our car there, we have to pretend to like them. We'r working on expanding the parking lot on the other side...

Why is Ukraine the worst neighbor for you, are there any official problems between our states that I don't know of? Hungarians are viewed very neutrally in Ukraine.
long foot September 28th, 2007, 11:04 PM This is odd. I always thought that you had the best relations. Can you enlighten us in the "petty quarrels" between Slovenia and Croatia?
There is no real quarrel, it is just... brotherly love :D
VelesHomais September 28th, 2007, 11:04 PM It's interesting that Ukraine scored last on every list of ratings, while ukrainians are pretty much friendly towards all of their neighbours, we don't have any widespread hatred for any specific country that neighbours us.
My favorite neighbors are Belarus and Poland.

Like it was demonstrated on this forum time and time again, the "sh*ts" actually mostly come from Bulgaria about Macedonia. Even when it is ignored, it just keeps on coming...
So don't be surprised or offended when we sometimes return the favor...
Personally I still have overall good feelings towards Bulgarians, despite the fact that a lot of Bulgarians on SSC are haters (and few hardcore trolls also). You shouldn't ask for anything more under the circumstances.

bgrs September 28th, 2007, 11:34 PM OK, concerning this forum, yes. Concerning the reality, no. Actually, until recently, most people here didn't care about Macedonia at all. It was guys like Latas, the Vardar ultras, the "friendly" bloggers and your journalists that made your country so popular here. And of course those OMO affairs of which unfortunately your media know very little, but keep on bashing us.

Realek September 28th, 2007, 11:49 PM Guys, every too often a thread like this comes along. It is getting boring.
Why don't we end this practice, and consult the scientific and extremely reliable study "The Exile" made a while ago.
It is not only about the Balkans or EE. It includes the westerners also (sometimes they tend to get carried away believing that they are something very special)

Ataman September 28th, 2007, 11:52 PM Why is Ukraine the worst neighbor for you, are there any official problems between our states that I don't know of?
Does "?" mean worst?
Hungarians are viewed very neutrally in Ukraine.
Hence the "?". Other than that we know very little of each other, and we occasionally forget we share a common border.

dewrob September 29th, 2007, 12:27 AM Judging Macedonia's political relations with its neighbours it would have to be like this:
4) Greece- We cant stand them because they hate us so much.
very subjective GreatMakedon. I'm not saying there is no animosity, but U make it sound much worse than it is in contrast to the other neighbours. I think the hate is rather balanced out to all four and all for different reasons.
Political wise I agree, lately we have the worse relations with them out of all.

We come from the same shitty EE commie systems! Yes, some of us were a little bit better off than the other! And today some of us are a little bit better off than the other!
When I was a kid I went to East Berlin and the people there were saying the same thing about Poles as the Poles are now saying about the Ukrainians.
So, my point is don't be so judgmental about your EE neighbors.......
And I said EE....
bgrs September 29th, 2007, 01:09 AM What about other EE countries (not neighbours)?
Ukrainians: very nice people. Some Bulgarians living there. Having a friend that's married to an Ukrainian in my hometown. They have a good (though strange) vodka. Very warm people. Seen some in Ruse, mostly people from the ships on Danube. Know an Ukrainian big guy that worked as a guard of a rock club in Studentski Grad, Sofia. He beated some skinheads that made some trouble, hehe. Very tough guy :) He drank with us some Finlandia, but that was years ago :)
Hungarians: I like them. My ancestors and their ancestors were very closely related. Bulgarians and Hungarians are very much like each other judging by their way of thinking. VelesHomais September 29th, 2007, 02:27 AM I'll instead focus on writing something positive about every of our neighbor ;)
Belarus - our closest ethnically, linguistically and mentally neighbors, politics aside. And I am partially Belarusian, which makes that nation even better :)
Poland - we do everything together, UKRPOLBAT in ex-Yugoslavia, same zone of occupation in Iraq, EURO-2012 and basically close people with similar traditions and language. Polish politicians are very supportive of Ukraine.
Slovakia - nice little clean country where I used to go to on vacations. Language sounds very similar to Ukrainian when spoken, but the meaning of the same words is often very different.
Hungary - the most mysterious out of all neighbors, I hear their highways are nice. I knew one Hungarian guy, he drank a lot and was jolly :)
Romania - interesting country with castles and Dracula, pretty big, I drove a Dacia once when I was on vacation there :D
Moldova - they make good wine and are generally friendly to us (as far as my experience goes)
Russia - great 19th century and some contemporary literature, and of course music and food. I mostly only eat Russian food.
And countries that feel like neighbors are: Lithuania, Bulgaria, Macedonia. Fan of all three.

1. Montenegro - Friendly but distant relations... Ulqin is a popular summer destination
2. Kosovo - The extension of Northern Albania
3. Macedonia - Friendly and Close relations, probably because the western part of Macedonia is largely populated by albanians
4. Greece - Improved relations from a decade ago. Large albanian population migrated there during the 90s. The only negative is the nationalists from both sides bickering political nonsense
5. Italy - Historic ties, very friendly country and our largest economic partner, italian is the second most spoken language in Albania

is members Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Czech rep.. I think is pretty big force in CE and EE..also getting importance in EU..
Well, maybe I should explain my choices to avoid misunderstandings...
Ukraine and Lithuania
Simply, they're both our ancient allies with whom we had some grudges later on, but recently rediscovered a common language, trying to put history behind us and started redeveloping a strategic partnerships with both of them. I think a kind of brotherhood between our three nations could be possible in the future, and not only possible but necessary, as our common eastern neighbour often respects only either big and powerful countries or united country blocks.
Czech Republic
I guess that prospects of having a common defence installation on our territories makes this relationship very important. Also there are some other strategic decisions being made between Poland and Czechia, like Poland buying czech trainer aircraft for polish fighter pilots and plans for a joined fighter pilot school in Poland. Our industries are also strongly bounded together, for example huge amount of car components used in Czech car factories are constructed in Poland. And Czechs were very good friends when backing us on a lost cause of trying to convince the rest of EU about vote reform on last EU summit.
Germany
Our strongest and most influential friendly neighbour, partner in Weimar Triangle (Germany, France, Poland), biggest trade partner of Poland (over 50 billion turnover), very important military ally giving us lots of good equipment for half the price or free, politically essential to have them on our side. Despite conflict issues of old raised recently, the future prospects look bright.
Russia
The only country in the world, with which we really don't seem to get along so well, no matter if polish government is from left or right. Still, a critically important trade partner, most of our gas and oil originates from there. So while the future is full of question marks, establishing good relations with them should be (and is) one of our country's most important priorities.
Belarus
There is only one reason why Belarus is above Slovakia in my little ranking. It's 200.000 big polish minority in Belarus. While Poland attempts to help opposition forces within Belarus in any legal means possible, it has to maintain a caution and a level of tolerance for whomever is in power in that country. For example, when there was a vote in European parliament on implementing economical sanctions against Belarus, only Poland and Lithuania were voting against it! Belarus is kind of special case...
Slovakia
Why at the bottom? Obviously not because it is unimportant for Poland, the V4 is a very precious initiative. But as i'm referring to current political agenda, at this moment there are no common issues that V4 is pursuing, at least not that I know of any. V4 was critically important, when we were all negotiating our entrance to EU, back then i'd have propably put Slovakia right beside Czech Republic. But it seems that since 2004 V4 went in a bit separate ways, no pressing strategic issues that would unite us, other than being part of same economic, political and military alliance, and more simply, being very good neighbours to each other. :)
dejan September 29th, 2007, 04:48 AM Macedonia doesnt border us, but I like them. They would be nice to have as neighbors.
Yes i wish we were neighbours too:)
It's interesting that Ukraine scored last on every list of ratings, while ukrainians are pretty much friendly towards all of their neighbours, we don't have any widespread hatred for any specific country that neighbours us.
It's always like that; Macedonia is always nice to its neighbours yet its always misrepresented as the 'bad guy', it just goes to show that nice guys always finish last.
Any neighbour is welcomed in Macedonia, so long as they come in with good intentions and no preconceived bullshit views 'i'm actually going into this country that use to rightfully belong to my people, we are the same people, they're confused they don't know who they are, they're the same as me they just don't know it' so the point is, don't be fake and 'pretend' to be accepting and whatever:nuts:
delfin_pl September 29th, 2007, 06:50 AM Ukraine is unknown in Poland  ? I hardly believe that...
It used to be, everything changed after orange revolution and EURO 2012 strengthened this but there are still many people who knows nothing about your country, and associate it with Russia. Though we dont border Hungary we feel very close to them (Polak, Węgier dwa bratanki i do szabli i do szlanki :)) Slovaks are well known here for their ski resorts and its hard not to like them when you listen to their language, so amusing because their language is very simlar to Polish and many words have diferent meaning in Polish, I wish I had some Slovakian TV channel but I live too far in northern Poland.

It's a generational divide. For older people, many don't like Ukrainians. Like my parents always say "Don't go to big cities, too many Ukrainian and Russian gangbangers," but among young people, Ukrainians are well liked. I completely disagree with my parents' opinion, but they left in the early 80s so to them soviet stereotypes still exist. And since older people will sooner or later die out, Ukraine will be left with a really positive image in our country overall. It's going in the right direction, just give it a little more times. EURO 2012 is one example of this. ;)

Czas na Żywiec September 29th, 2007, 10:59 AM Now for me:
Slovakia - It helps that Slovakia is around 20 minutes away from my town. I understand their language pretty much completely, lots of Slovak words are common in our accent and vice versa with gorals from Slovakia. Overall they are the closest to me.
Czech Rep. and Ukraine - Tied for second. Never been to either country, but like them very much. Languages a little harder to understand, but still get the gist of. Beautiful cities, nice people, but Czechs aren't as fond of Poles as Ukrainians are, at least that's my perception.
Germany - Really love the country, the squares, marketplaces, architecture, both old and modern. Many Germans don't like Poles but despite this, I still look at them as inspiration. Good work ethic, the whole concept of "Arbeit und Ordnung," and just overall efficiency with transportation. Hopefully as time goes on, we can learn to like each other more and realize that we are closer than we think we are (despite religious differences).
Lithuania - Don't know too much about them, but they have nice cities and towns, Vilnius skyline is great, Klaipeda, Curonian spit, having a part of Russia sandwiched between us and finding it a strange out of the ordinary place, but interesting at the same time. We shared a country for a long time even tho the languages are completely different. Overall a positive image.
Belarus - To be honest, I know almost nothing of Belarus. Only that Lukashenko has kept them in this Soviet time warp, using shitty flag and coat or arms instead of traditional symbols, hopefully they find their way back on track soon and get rid of Luka but I'm not sure how possible that is.
Russia - Well, only Kaliningrad haha. I like Russians as a people, government and officials are another thing. Russians really don't like us, but hopefully that's just the provokers on this forum and not just a general thing. Being both the biggest country in Europe and the world, we shouldn't have them on our bad side. Not sure how relations will progress but hopefully it doesn't get any worse. Polish government officials and regular people =/= the same. There are of course those select few who feel the need to provoke but a few rotten apples doesn't mean the whole bunch is spoiled.
krzysiu_ September 29th, 2007, 12:58 PM Well I know many russians and they all likes me, but maybe because they are girls =)
Marek.kvackaj September 29th, 2007, 02:07 PM Hungarian Kingdom was the part of the Habsburg Monarchy from 1526/40 to 1918.

RawLee September 29th, 2007, 02:23 PM -I think we currently like Slovenia the most:)
-We dont like Slovakia currently(more than usualy:)),because of Slota and his ideas.
-Croatia was bad last year, when a lot of hungarians' houses by the sea was destroyed, but we ususally like to pay a visit to them in the summer.
-Serbia is just there,I dont think we have any +/- feelings towards them.
-I think Ukraine is also neutral, apart from that natural gas incident last year.
-We have a general bad feeling against Romania, because of Transylvania,as ususal, but apart from that, they are okay:).
-And Austria is a bad neighbour these days...polluting the Rába with the new leather factories, the garbage incinerator...
Verso September 29th, 2007, 02:29 PM -I think we currently like Slovenia the most:)Autobahn Budapest - Laibach (Ljubljana :D) coming in 2008! :)
Marek.kvackaj September 29th, 2007, 02:30 PM -We dont like Slovakia currently(more than usualy:)),because of Slota and his ideas.
not only Slota ...ideas are much deeper he is just result of Slovakia-Hungarian relationships ...same as with new political/army party in Hungary with main aim restore big Hungary(even by force)..with members (like ex minister in Hungarian government ..)
btw I dont like Slota eighter...he is just bloke from vilage..I dont understand hov he can get 10% people in Slovakia voted for his party...
benek_gda September 29th, 2007, 02:31 PM Lithuania- We have lots of in common looking at our history. But i think many Poles treat Lithuania as a polish territory and that's why the Lithuanians may dislike us. (mainly elderly people). Although today lots of young Poles know about Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth- children have to learn about many Polish-Lithuanian unions:) . But the attitude to Lithuania is rather neutral. We don't know so many about them.
Belarus- For me the worst neighbour. Totaly unpredictable authority. that's about country, and if we talk about people I think we know about Belarussians nearly nothing. (poor? maybe:nuts: ).
Russia- I think lots of Poles have bad opinion about Russian politics. Mr. Putin doesn't respect democracy. There is no free mass-media in this country. They say only bad things about Poland so i suppose Russians rather dislike us. Many elderly people don't like Russians due to the fact of II WW. The Soviets attacked us together with Germans and murdered lots of polish soldiers (prisoners) and members of Intelligence. That's history, but it has to be reminded when Russian try to falsify the facts.
And to the people the attidude is not so negative. There is something we have in common. Good Vodka:cheers:
Ukraine- Our attitude to this country has tottaly changed in the last few years. We don't look at them as if they were second Russians. This country reminds me Poland from the 90's. Young democracy, proeuropean thinking, big plans. State of hope:). What more? Euro 2012 of course. And i think many Ukainians has a positive view on Poland now - they see us as their ambassadors in EU)
Slovakia- who knows? Maybe my favorite?:) Love this country. Beutifull nature, mountains (I know them very well, and go there in december to ski on Chopok:banana: ). According to my experience the Slovaks are very polite to us (in the contrary to the Czechs), and rather like us as we do:)
Czech Republic- They hate us.:ohno: I have been there few times and always the same. They treat us as if we were worse. They can't forgive us that polish forces intervented in Prague in 68. The decission was taken by communistic government while ordinary people were against. I think that's the reason of this bad relationships. But it's funny. Because most of Poles really like Czechs. They are leaders of many rankings of popularity.
Germany- historic enemy and that's why lots of Poles still dislike them. The relationships are based on bad stereothypes and in my opinion both nations are guilty. Poles can't understand that Germans are not their enemies as it used to be, and the Germans don't understand that their east neighbours aren't dirty car thieves, and poor people.:bash:
Hungary- our historic neighbour :) common history and this rhyme: "Polish, Hungarian two good friends, they fight and drink together".
Anyway i've found something interesting on Wikipedia
Genetic kinship
Recent genetic research[1] prove that this pledge has a factual basis. Both Polish and Hungarian populations have the highest frequency of the R1a Y gene in Europe. Two people will have the same Y chromosome marker only if they originated from the same father. When the mutation originated is still a questionable matter - someplace in time 10,000 years ago. Anyway it is one of the evolutionally youngest mutations in the Y chromosome genealogical tree. More research may solve this question. Y-DNA microsatellites mutate frequently and may be mapped with generational precision. It is surprising to many that such a familiar relationship may be cherished in words for so long, and it shows the potential of population genetics in solving frequently obscured, historical question
RawLee September 29th, 2007, 02:50 PM same as with new political/army party in Hungary with main aim restore big Hungary(even by force)..with members (like ex minister in Hungarian government ..)

-Croatia was bad last year, when a lot of hungarians' houses by the sea was destroyed, but we ususally like to pay a visit to them in the summer.
.
BC you built them illegally on protected land, on island where no constriction is allowed, your mafioso property developers bribe local Croatian politicians to turn blind eye on such developments, happily most of them are now behind bars and any house built on national park land or islands must be approved by Central government from now on.
And many Croatians lost there houses as well, Austrians, Italians, Czech and Slovens as well.
You see in Croatia they have this strict rule, you can't build house or structure with in 100m of shoreline, coast or a beach.
Structures erected before 1990 are allowed to stay but after 1990 everything built without permit from the Central Government in Zagreb must go down.
And I totally agree with that policy wholeheartedly.

You agree with her views? Want your party out of the european liberal party just as the slovaks had their democratic, because of Slota?

montesky September 29th, 2007, 04:24 PM Generally speaking, people in Montenegro are not quite impressed with any of neighbours that we have.
I will rank them as follows:
1. Serbia - they are just like a family, something like a big brother, who is a little bit jealous and insulted by your unwillingness to live with him:)
2. Bosnia - all good jokes are about Bosnians:D Bosnians are good, but somehow stupid (at least that is the case in jokes that I have mentioned)
3. Croatia - we don’t like them, however, we pretend that we do
4. Albania/Kosovo - we are not delighted that we have them as our neighbours. They are considered as uncivilised and poor (but they are making a progress lately) and as a threat to a peace
Qtya September 29th, 2007, 04:37 PM Croatia was bad last year, when a lot of hungarians' houses by the sea was destroyed, but we ususally like to pay a visit to them in the summer.
I'm just catching up now... I personally dont blame the Croats! The houses, apartments were illegally built! Everyone has to follow the law... The Croatian authorities did the right thing, nevertheless a family friend had an apartment building there... I wish Hungarian authorities had the same vocation here in Hungary... :ohno:

IvanB September 29th, 2007, 04:52 PM Czech republic - best relations in politics, economics and culture. Language is very similar, our closest country IMO.
Poland and Ukraine - two big countries, relations are good, standard but in economics could be better especially with Ukraine. I live on south west border so don't meet too much people from Poland or Ukraine.
Austria - relations are OK,I don't see any problems.
Hungary - people are generally OK but hungarian politics (:ohno: ) belong to middle ages. Absolutely terrible a unacceptable.

No one calls the largest opposition party radicals in the EU. You know its only the bullshit of the governing parties. I would be really surprised if You would believed that... Anyway, just to strengthen my statement, the leader of FIDESZ was just reelected as the vice president of the EPP... If the EPP would fear just a bit of the possibility that FIDESZ would move to a far right position they would never done that, or would they?
IvanB September 29th, 2007, 04:59 PM -We dont like Slovakia currently(more than usualy:)),because of Slota and his ideas.
I don't see too much differences between Slota and FIDESZ except that FIDESZ is one of two main party in Hungary. And it's not only FIDESZ but whole conglomerate of nationalistic parties like Jobbik or 'Group of 64 regins'(or so) etc, etc.

Ionian doesn't even means anything in any language, since its named after ionians, one of the Greek tribes.

Csurka being the largest communist leader??!?! WHAT THE HELL?! That's new. He was III/III as I remember, but largest communist leader... That's a good one!
A year ago I was at the Etele square piac where a local society (!!) protested for the extension of the Metro4 till, the Budaörs Virágpiac... Rascian September 30th, 2007, 01:02 AM Montenegro: 10 They are like a younger brother.. and I guess there are more Montenegrin living in Belgrade than in Monetenegro itself... We had one little dipute lately but the relations will be just fine.. Unfortunatly some politicians both in Serbia and Monetenegro prefer to make artificial tensions in order to get some political points.
Macedonia: 10 They're Ok.. very peacefull, never making problems... .. there are some dispute with the church but I don't care about that...
Romania: 10 Interesting fact.. Serbia and Romania were never in any kind of military conflict between each other , not even mediavel Serbia and Walachia..
We like them, although people don't know much about Romanians, I have a friend, a Serb from Timisoara so I had a chance to visit the country...
Bosnia: 9 Many Bosnians live in Serbia... In general people in Serbia like the Bosnians.. They have the reputation of good and naive people.. The political side and events in the 1990' spoil the image...
Croatia: 8 My mother's familly is from Croatia.. hmm, in general people are close to Serbs, but there's a lot of poison in the relations.. Hopefully it's changing for the better
Bulgaria: 8 Nothing against Bulgaria, but it seems that some of them have some problems with Serbia... Sometimes I get scared when I see how much some of them are obssesed with Serbia... Like here on SSC one Deki Kg on the Serbian side and 20 Deki Kg on the Bulgarian one :)
Actually we can be very similar...
Hungary: 7 Well politicly the relations are fine, I met some Hungarians the majority was just fine but some of them were annoying... I like better local Hungarians from Vojvodina...they are more close to us...
And yes, they kicked my grandfather out of Hungary and magyarized some of my relatives :ohno:

slowake September 30th, 2007, 03:30 PM ok, well I'll say it from my point of view:
Hungary: Tensions between politicians mainly. In my subjective point of view this affects only Slovaks in pure slovak regions and Hungarians which don't have any contacts to Slovaks. I spend my weekends in a small town which is half slovak and half hungarian, and most people are just sick of it and dont pay much attention to it. Officially our relations are quite bad, but thats because of the focus on the extreme nationalist 10% in both of our countries. Lot of room for improvement though.
Czech Rep.: Officially our best relations, especially between politicians. Czechs complain sometimes about many Slovaks working in Czech Republic and taking their jobs. Some Slovaks complain about Czechs looking down on Slovaks. You could say, silly fights between brothers. But in general, our closest neighbor.
Poland: Several misunderstandings in our languages, lol. I dont see much negative between us. Slovaks complain about Polish trucks filling our highways, Poles complain about us being slow building the highway to the border, lol. Good relations, cultural ties and business as usual.
Ukraine: Our relations have been improving over years, EU and Schengen have not stopped this. Slovakia has been a big supporter with Poland of Ukraine and Croatia joining the EU. Slovak police has problems with illegal Ukrainian construction workers. Ukrainians complain about the incompetent reconstruction of the Uzhhorod border control by the Slovaks, which lead to the closing of the border for almost half a year.
Austria: Standard relations, space for improvements. Some Slovaks think Austrians have a general East-phobia and look down on Slovaks as other east European countries. Austrians complain about Slovaks working illegally in Austria, Slovaks complain about Austrians demanding us to close down our nuclear power plants. Politically, standard EU relations, business as usual.

bgrs September 30th, 2007, 10:43 PM Well, I don't think he knows where he lives :) Anyway, he really sings in Bulgarian and that is very strange, most of the chalga people like him sing in some language that is barely understandable, neither Greek, neither Gypsy, neither Turkish, nor Greek. Anyway, you should respect this guy! He has more silicon than proteins....and his dick is kinda 30 centimeters semi-silicon monster, at least according to the yellow papers, ahah :)
Isn't he sweet :P

HeavenlySword September 30th, 2007, 10:57 PM Let´s talk about bulgarian prostitutes. They come to Turkey to fuck. And we fuck them very hard :D
bgrs September 30th, 2007, 10:58 PM Anyway, if we speak about Balkan folk music, I really like Serbian one the most (though I hate all of it).
Don't you like this? I like it :)
Ly4_EXv8QKg
BTW this guy is among the Serbia's biggest rock stars! His band was called "Bjelo Dugme", even Goran Bregovic was playing there AFAIK! I like them!
I don't care about Bulgarian prostitutes though :) They are gypos just like our Bulgarian Turkish gestarbeiters that flock in Europe :) Man, can't they just go to your beloved Turkey and throw their Bulgarian passports? I don't like gypos and Turks spoiling the image of my country :) And why do they go to Germany and etc? Can't they just go to your extradeveloped country and earn their living there? :)

CrazySerb September 30th, 2007, 11:09 PM All these songs suck, but I have to admit my astonishment at their popularity in Bulgaria. It makes me embarassed and a little ashamed that I cannot name a single Bulgarian singer, except of course for Azis but even that is thanks to this forum.
Of course, I haven't lived in the Balkans since I was 14 years old so maybe thats why;)

You see, Germans will soon get tired of those Turkish power BS :) France already got tired, see Sarkozy guy :)
I'm just too bothered by what's going to happen after that, so manny Bulgarian Turkish (Bulgarian or Turkish after all, depends on the interest :) ) workers going back... :)
I don't think we can handle that, so let's vote for a nationalistic govt ahah, let's listen to the modern tendencies in Europe :)
BTW if that happens...I wonder all those "Bulgarian" prostitutes you see in Istanbul...are they gonna be Turkish or Bulgarian aahah :) Anyway :)
BTW prostitutes in Istanbul? Don't you beat them to death there? :)

bgrs October 1st, 2007, 12:07 AM OK, let's settle this, those flame wars are stupid :) Anyway I got annoyed by those "Bulgarian prostitutes" and the Turkish invasion of south-eastern Europe :) So I overreacted a bit :) Peace? :P
blue79 October 1st, 2007, 12:11 AM ^^It's not overreacting bgrs, this troll must be atleast brigged!
bgrs October 1st, 2007, 12:19 AM Errr...that's not so surreal. There are still ex-soviet SS-23 rockets in silos in Bulgaria, in the North-eastern and southern parts, there are some near my hometown really. Those rockets have almost 0.5 square kilometer destruction radius and they are among the most brutal conventional weapons around, they can easily reach Istanbul. Let them invade South-Eastern Europe, we will destroy the whole city in a day. And I just wonder what the Greeks keep as a surprise for them. I don't think killing 15 million people in a day is funny and I don't think their invasion is funny as well. But they could try it, not only we, but the whole EU as well as Russia will kick their asses badly...fuck those military bullshits!!! It's not funny at all. If it was for the prostitutes, OK. But as far as the military goes....lol!!!
sun&sun October 1st, 2007, 12:21 AM Havenlysword this is just ridiculous what you do here! You can't control people's feeling towards us. Probably they need some more time like 2-3 generation to forget about the Ottoman time but you don't help these people to forget about it!

You see the bad thing about us is that we keep that military old-times nostalgia towards those guys though economically and politically we don't like them very much :) Anyway, we're still buddies with them, you see, their strange ideas of the Slavic brotherhood, they sound sooo interesting :) I don't think that the Turks are ever gonna try our friends, that's gonna bring them only bad, bad experiences :)

but one more thing stays unreachable for me: why the hell Hungarian-Slovakian incidents seems to be the largest here!? and why the hell nobody likes Ukraine?
i mustn't read this thread anymore, i'm getting cramps from laughing!

DanMs October 1st, 2007, 02:45 AM Heres my two cents
1. Kosovo/a - our brothers
5. Montenegro(serbia) - Some war criminals came from this little place. Albanians generally think Slavs(esp. serbs) are barbaric invadors as shown by the wars in Balkans.
4. Macedonia - On the state level our relationship have gotten better. They are not better than Serbs or any other south slav for that matter exception is that now the political situation is in our favor hence why the good climate between our countries.
3. Greece - I believe Greece is the country we are closer with and we should improve our relations. The only problem with them is that they swing in different ways.
2. Italy - Probably the best of the worst from the list. We have good economic ties with Italy.
