View Full Version : Accurate detailed 3D model of The World Trade Center [Finished]
jc84144 September 29th, 2007, 02:22 AM I have spent over 300 hours recreating the World Trade Center in 3D as it stood before it was destroyed in 2001. The model is very detailed and accurate and has been modelled using blue prints, diagrams and hundreds of photographs. The model includes all 7 buildings of the complex in full 3D detail, as well as the Plaza level (with all 4 outdoor sculptures). The model only has 1 texture [the plaza floor] everything else is in full 3D with materials applied.
I have used Sketchup to create the model, and Vray for Skecthup to render.
There is 190465 faces in the model.

Skyhi71 October 2nd, 2007, 10:03 AM You're 15? My god, you have some scary skills! I seriously hope you're thinking of a architecture for a career, or at least graphic design. Incredibly accurate. Have you made any models of buildings you've designed yourself? Because, I'm sure we'd all love to see them too.
Keep up the good work!

^^ JC and I have both seen that model on a different thread, on Wired New York.com. It's a STUNNING model!!!
And then, of course, JC's model is nothing short of brilliant. I look up to him. Worship him. More than STR, even, because JC is my friend!
I would post pictures of my own model, but this is JC's thread... I wouldn't want him to feel like I was competing with him, despite how many times we've compared models over MSN. :ohno: That just wouldn't fly. Great work, JC. :)

Brendan October 15th, 2007, 07:47 AM I think you have captured the Twin Towers perfectly. I am comparing real images of the towers with your renders right now and there is hardly a difference. The materials seem correct as does the measurements of things such as the width of the steel beams. I think you've done a fantastic job, well done. :)
Skyhi71 October 15th, 2007, 08:00 AM It's mind boggling seriously. I did the same thing and compared them to pictures, and the only difference is that your model is pristine and clean, compared to the dirtier Twins :)
Awesome job, I wish I knew half as much as you do about SU!

Most of the model uses real measurements (when I could find them) and real blueprints. For a small amount of things that seemed impossible to get the real measurements or blueprints, I used photos, and compared what I needed to model against something else in the picture I already knew the dimensions too. By using this method I could get pretty accurate results for even the things I didn’t have blueprints, diagrams or dimensions for.
At the moment, I currently have over 150 pictures of the WTC that I have downloaded, all of which I thought would be important for modelling.
As for the dirt, this would be something hard to simulate, but I may have a go at it once I have completed all the outdoor sculptures around the site. I have already completed 2, of these sculptures, here is a render.
http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff257/jc84144/plaza.jpg
I understand the ‘Sphere’ could do with some changes, and i will will change the the material, this was just for a render test.

Your work is looking fantastic JC. I love the sculptures. Could we please see some screens of Cloud Fortress? (lol... I feel so smart )
If JC's absolutely ok with it, I'll post some screens of my model soon. so that BRENDAN can see that it actually ISN'T that bad.

Please do not fill this thread with unrelated rubbish which means nothing to the directed person anyway. Thankyou.
JC, as said before, your model is absolutely fantastic. I recently tried my hand at Kerkythea and now I am actually rather surprised at the quality of your model considering you used two free programs. I understand your answer to my PM, in fact I was in a way hoping you would reply how you did. Excellent work mate. 10/10
Also I've just noticed, I think there needs to be just a little more light in your renders. Just a tiny bit more. Increasing the multiplyer of a light in your scene would solve this.

Excuse me!? You know EXACTLY what I'm talking about, and knowing JC, he's probably fine with me posting my concerns in his thread, just as long as I don't hang over the subject for too long..
You're a fool Brendan, and you know it. Would you care to discuss it like men, or are you just going to pretend like I'm an idiot? Because I'm not.

Well actually my first set of renders were done with Kerkythea, but all the new renders have been done with Vary for Sketchup. The reason for it’s looking like there isn’t enough light is because I have had no previous experience with the Vray plug in, and there is actually too much light, so I’ve had to increase the camera shutter speed, which is making the picture look slightly dull. This is giving the renders an evening feel, even though the lighting should be for midday.
Thanks for the advice, now I can decrees the shutter speed again, and just reverse the advice you gave. :)
And Joel, I don't know what has happened between you and Brendan, but I would appreciate it if you could keep this out of my thread. I did the render you requested (at bottom).
And yes Joel, please do post some images of your model. :)
I'm still editing it, and i need to sort out the colour:

Sweet. Looks better than mine... (see my posts on WNY :))
Joelio Wilson October 18th, 2007, 05:59 AM Ok, here's some screens of my model.
This is basically a top-down (inaccurate) spacial model of the World Trade Center, including most inner columns, outer columns etc. Every building has floors and facade (save 3WTC, which I'm keeping as is for now, and 4WTC, which I will do but haven't started yet). The Concourse Mall is also included, and 7WTC will be added eventually.
Basic overview of the original complex. Nearly all buildings have since been changed, except 3 and 4. The 6 pictured is the half-complete final version.

Plaza (the colour has since been changed and the fountain is under renovation):

Spatial 3WTC that I attempted to build, although the file size is about 2 thirds of the size of the whole complex file size, making it difficult to build:

Please stop, you're only embarassing yourself.
@JC: Ah yeah I thought it looked a bit too "good" for Kerkythea. :) But yeah it looks great. The next step would be to improve on the materials. Something shiny and metalic would look great for the facades of the towers and something a tad glossy would work well for the ground.
jc84144 October 19th, 2007, 02:46 AM Phew! That was a lot of screens
Wow, didn't anticipate that many renders. Looking good Joel.

I'm taking my last set of renders tonight of my finished model, and i'll post them either later today or tomorrow.
BTW, for anyone who is intrested i have started to model the World Financial Center in NY (Opersite the WTC site) too. :)
Brendan October 23rd, 2007, 11:54 AM Oh the WFC? Wow that should look great especially when rendered with the WTC. I can't wait JC! :)
Judging from the fantastic work you have done with your WTC model I am absolutely certain that the WFC will look just as great. :)

I would appreciate it if you kept conspiracy stuff out of my thread. There is plenty of threads about that have discussions about this sort of thing, but that is not here.
germantower October 25th, 2007, 10:54 AM Where do you see conspiracy in this video??
Joelio Wilson October 25th, 2007, 11:11 AM ^^ At the end, there are loads of links to conspiracy theory websites.
JC, I modeled 2WTC's crown... looks pretty good.
germantower October 25th, 2007, 11:18 AM But my intention wasnt that my intention was only the rendering.I didnt see any kind of bringing conspiracy theorys into here.I am also against conspiray especially against as related to this event.
BTW JC isnt your computer already striking?Especially when you render that damn detailed model!!!!
Joelio Wilson October 25th, 2007, 08:42 PM JC's model isn't very big - built in Sketchup, it is only around 9mb (sketchup file). :)
jc84144 October 25th, 2007, 11:33 PM JC's model isn't very big - built in Sketchup, it is only around 9mb (sketchup file). :)
Actually the Sketchup file is 9.4MB's. Sketchup is very good for small file sizes.
Even though the model is 9.4MB's, when opened it takes up A LOT of RAM, and yes my computer does lag when i have the model open.
My World Financial Center model will be in a different file, until it comes to rendering it, then i will merge the models together.
germantower October 26th, 2007, 01:19 AM When you merge them i wish you and your pc good luck man.I have models with 30mb and you cant handle that big ones without working with component feature.
jc84144 October 26th, 2007, 05:37 AM When you merge them i wish you and your pc good luck man.I have models with 30mb and you cant handle that big ones without working with component feature.
I use a 'layer' system, so i can hide big sections of my model that i am not working on. I can do this when i have merged, and when i render, i can make it render all layers, meaning it renders the whole model, but my computer doesn't suffer.
ArchiTennis October 26th, 2007, 06:35 AM When you merge them i wish you and your pc good luck man.I have models with 30mb and you cant handle that big ones without working with component feature.
30mb!??!! whoa that's tiny!! I render models that are 750mb's!!! it takes well over 5 hours to render...and i got 4 gigs of ram!
Joelio Wilson October 26th, 2007, 09:41 AM JC, you should post some screens of your 1 Liberty Plaza ;)
I modeled all the columns and the core of 2WTC... haven't done the mullions, glass or diamonds yet but the building should be done by Monday
(MSN offline messaging isn't working for some reason :()
jc84144 October 26th, 2007, 09:38 PM I have put the World Financail Center on hold untill i get the book i orderd which has infomation about the WFC.
Untill then, i am modeling other buildings and working on my website [www.skyhigh3d.com (http://www.skyhigh3d.com)]. Yesterday i started (and finished) One Liberty Plaza, which was behind the WTC complex.

jc84144 January 29th, 2008, 07:01 PM FUCK! 300 Hours!
I can barley look at one building in sketchup for 30 mins!
Amazing work though!
Lol ;) Thanks.
300 hours? Wow you must have a lot of free time in your life to do something like this for that duration of time.
Yes, 300 hours is indeed a long time. But if you think about it intelligently, it‘s been about a year since I started this project, that averages out less than 1 hour a day. And yes :D I do have lots of happy free time, and this is my hobby, so seems like the perfect thing to spend some of that time doing.

LV994-CB January 31st, 2008, 01:22 PM Just amazing. It's too perfect. Well almost cause the roof topping loks incomplete. But still i think there is no model to compare with this.

Yeah, I am aware of how the lobby's looked, but I decided not to do any interior detail except the floor plates, well at least for now while I work on other things.

Dude he's not to be expected to make everything in the freaking model. He's just made one of the most realistic WTC models I've seen in a while! Get a grip, just because he missed out one bit of detail doesn't mean you have to point it out and get all "eeeeh you made a mistake" on him.
It's the ceiling.. wtf.

it's not ment to be a bad thing because i was not aware that he knew how the lobby looked like :D
