View Full Version : Things that I hate about LA!

Don't get me wrong, LA is a great place: weather, people, culture, etc... but it is a big city, and with that come problems just like anywhere else in the world. I'm not saying here that LA is better or worse than any other big city in the world, but one of the huge downfalls of this great city is its police department (and juries as well, but that is completely different issue).

Anyways, I started this thread to bitch about things that need to be changed here. I will start with something that I witnessed last night. Feel free to chime in on my story and add your own as well.

So, its Friday night and I meet a friend of mine for happy hour on Main St. in Santa Monica. Happy hour ends and I need to pick up some dinner for the wifey and I before I head home, so I stroll on down to the Baja Fresh which is actually in Venice, yet still on Main St. So, I get my food and I'm walking down Main St heading home when I get to Chaya Venice. As I'm walking by, a taxi driver pulls up because some people had waived him down. Almost immediately, an LAPD squad car and motorcycle cage him in and practically pull him out of the car. Next thing I know, he's cuffed (not the metal cuffs, but those plastic zip tie ones) and is being placed in the back of the squad car. Seconds later, the cop car and and cab (now being driven by a cop) are driving away. Obviously, I don't know the whole story here, but the cab did pull in front of a fire hydrant at a red curb, but for christ's sake, this was completely ridiculous. A taxi driver was literally arrested for this. There was literally no time to check the driver's ID or probably even run his plates.

During this whole process, a well dressed man came out of Chaya (I can only imagine it was the owner) and started screaming about how people were being raped and the cops were wasting their time on taxi drivers. After a couple minutes of this, one of the cops attempted to confront this man, but he was on his way back into the restaurant already.

This shit pisses me off!!!!!! There is really no room for this. I can't believe that the LAPD could be so "not busy" that they would have time to setup stings to arrest taxi drivers for picking up people in front of red curbs. These are people who are actually being responsible and having a sober driver rather than risking their safety as well as others' on the roads.

BULL SHIT

ps I just emailed the mayor and councilman Rosendahl an edited version of my rant so hopefully something can be done about this.

Like you mentioned on your post that you don't know the whole story. I've never ever seen this happened before. Well maybe in a low budget Van Dam movie. Most likely you witness a long investigated case where the Taxi driving was a front for an illegal action that was being tracked for months . Here (Fullerton) w/ a few drinks in you (like you also mentioned) and is making a big fuzz on a matter you don't have a clue on. Maybe you were buying food for the wifey for an earlier argument about a no sex policy and you were so pist-off/drunk to even think straight. You went ahead and jump to conclusions, even sent an e-mail to the Mayor and who knows who else, which is problaly going to get labeled as spam and never get read. :ohno:

So the moral of the story, mind your own business!!!

...and I meant hate with the fullest intent!

LA has way too many other problems to pulling stings like this. This is the kind of shit that happens in bedroom communities that have nothing else going on. Venice is on the brink of a gang war right now and the cops are arresting taxi drivers. Give me a break!

I'm gonna play the odds on this one ferney and completely disagree with you. All I have to say is that you should have been there before commenting about what I saw.

You e-mailed the mayor for a taxi driver getting arrested? Ever think that he could've commited a crime?

People get killed for not minding their business.

Apparently no one gets my point and there's no way to fully express myself over an internet forum. It would probably be best for all if we just had this thread shut down. I'm not sure how to contact the mods, maybe someone can help me out here.

I saw this great T-shirt on Hollywood boulevard once, it said "LAPD: We treat you like a KING!", get it? Rodney King? LAPD? But anyway, for some reason they don't sell that t-shirt anymore. I should have bought it when I had the chance, it's probably worth a lot of money on ebay by now.

what the? I completely agree with solongfullerten. Wasn't there recent legislation (passed or trying to pass) to allow taxi drivers to stop at any curb? L.A. doesn't allow a taxi driver to pick up anyone anywhere....only at designated taxi zones. I think this is ridiculous and stupid. Some friends and I (after drinking at Hotel Figueroa) tried hailing a cab but the cab driver told us to walk north on Fig. to the freakin' taxi zone! STUPID! I can only assume that what solongfullerten saw was exactly that...stupid police arresting a taxi driver for trying to pick someone up at the "wrong" place.

Well.. I had encounters with the police many times. Let me post an entry from my livejournal about this one time:

[Apr. 23rd, 2005]
The day was great. unforgettable.

Today was Stephanie's birthday party.

We went bowling and used communist leader then Star Wars character's names. I was Mao Zeh Dong then Shak Ti.

We were running around playing waterbottle football and duck-duck-goose. We said "lets make this more challenging and lets do it by the playground" And so we did. 30 minutes later this fat and short lady comes to me and the three guys you see on the right. and said "You, and you. you and you. (pointing at us four) you are too big for this" so I said "so... you're too small." then she said "you are too tall" and ofcouse I said "you are too short" then she said "I may be short but atleast I am not stupid like you". har har har. Then I said "You're just calling me stupid because I am Asian!" (by the way I was at Monterray Park [the most Asian part of LA]). So she yells for her 'child' an Asian child (she was hispanic) and said "Lets go home".

6 or so minutes later...

We see this cop coming towars us along with a cop behind. ~what is it now~ I thought. The guy walking pointed at us and yelled "THESE ARE THE ONES!". then he goes on to say "THEY FIT THE DISCRIPTION!" then I thought ~oh.. they notice I am Asian~. C. Han came up to me and said "We heard that you were abusing and shoving children" I thought ~what the fuck..~ and I said "Hahahah what are you talking about." while other people said "what?" then C. Han yelled "YOU SHUT THE FUCK UP!" and pointed at me. then as things goes on We all tried to tell the side of the story when they're just intrupting.

Ok heres the thing. They force us to tell our story and they don't even let us talk. it was like We were-ok-were here to-ok let me talk-we celebrating-ok-my friend's-let me talk.

So he pulls me out saying "Sir, come with me". To tell everyone the truth I wasn't scared. I was just pissed off that they had to be assholes about it. So he said "Now what are you doing here." and I said "Its a park... what am I suppose to do here?" then C. Han said "THATS NOT ANSWERING MY QUESTION!" then I said "I am playing here with my friends." then he said "THAT IS NOT ANSWERING MY QUESTION." then I told him "I AM CELEBRATING MY FRIEND'S BIRTHDAY!" then he said "YOU KNOW I CAN TAKE YOU TO JAIL FOR NOT TELLING ME THE TRUTH!" so I said "WHY DO YOU THINK I AM LIEING TO YOU! LOOK OVER THERE! MY FRIENDS ARE THERE AND SO IS THE parENT!"

then he said "I AM GOING TO TAKE YOU TO JAIL FOR NOT TELLING ME THE TRUTh."

then... I started laughing because the whole thing was so fucken absurd.

Then he said "I am not joking around with you. I will take you to jail." then I said "Why do you think I am joking. Look at me, I am looking into your eyes, why are you antagonizing me when that lady (the accuser) is looking at me laughing at me"

then I had a thought..

"Do you remember that lady who accused Wendy's of having a finger in her chili?"

He then said to me "This is not a joke"

Then I said "She made a false claim, Plus if I did abuse children then where is the child who was abused? where are the blood stains?"

He said "Well I got a report with the criminals fitting your discription."

I said "What, Asian?"

Then he said "No, I am Asian too"

Then I said "so.."

Then he said "There has obviously been a disturbance here, why else would the victem call us?"

~oh my buddha, America~

Then he said "Come on, you're a man, why are you playing here."

I said "I may be a man but I have a heart of a child" (most of you know that about me)

and then I said "Ok if I am not allowed here then where is the sign that says "No big people allowed?"

Then some other shit happened. I don't really remmeber everything.

So he takes me back to the group and said "OK I AM TRYING TO CALM ALL OF YOU DOWN"

you know... if I was one of those people who had a gun and would use it at any moment I think I would use it after all that she C. Han put me through.

then Jimenez (the other officer) said "Would you think we would believe you kids more or the lady."

-----------------------------

List of what we were accused of by the police

1. Child abuse

2. Being disrespectful

3. Talk back

4. Lies

5. Joking around during serious times

------------------------------

blah blah blah blah

C. Han - "If you're not happy then you can report us"

Jimenez - "The station is right behind us"

-------------------------------

At the Station.

"We would like to file a report"

...

"Using the F word is wrong, I will have a discussion with C. Han about that"

"You kids are on to something"

"Thank you for reporting this, I will have a discussion with C. Han and Jimenez."

( They probably won't )

Here is the picture of that day at the park:

My location varies with school and work. My uncle's house (which is were I live) is in Santa Monica. I'm in Westwood right now, though. I spent last summer in Montebello because of work.

what kind of a thread is this? No wonder why we don't have any civic pride here. You always want to talk about what is wrong rather than the benefits of our city. Take this thread down. All major cities deal with serious problems but do you hear them advertising their flaws. I love my city unconditionally. This is my city.

I am mad!!! HA HA!! (cybermad that is). NO serious. Angelinos constantly complain about people bashing their city but then they bash it more than anyone. Stand up and defend your city. How do you think we'll get respect? Stop being partial!!! When people complain about the city, I think to myself "leave," you'll help solve our traffic problem. Also, don't let east coast city transplants impose the greatness of their cities on you. If their cities are so great, why are they here in LA which by their own account is a "hellhole." As a proud Angelino, I say "stop being pussies" and defend your city....Stop complaining and wishing everything should be catered to you. This is a megapolis, some people will get the short end of the stick from time to time. If you're scratching your head wondering what is good about this city, go live in another city(even the ones you think are so great from the outside...NY, Paris etc.) for a substantial period of time and then you will appreciate the vast luxury of options we have in our City of Angels.........Stand up LA
