The talllest in Switzerland for the moment. There are projects in Basle (154m) and Geneva (3 x 175m) but these aren't approved yet. I hope that they announce some 180 to 200m highrises in the area where this tower is going to be built... ;)

Quite tall projects for small/medium cities like Zurich or Basel! :)Zurich Metro has around 1,5mio inhabitants, geneva around 700'000 and basle around 500'000.

Especially in Zurich it's unpractical to use the proper city population to compare with other citys.

But at the projects are quite tall for Swiss cities...

H&DM made a proposal but at the end the investors decided to realise the proposal by Gygon&Guyer (Zurich)

The design is rather plain however the glass could save the tower. A nice simple shape and shiny reflective glass always work well together. Primetower, although lacking in height, should look quite nice when completed.

The name Primetower references to the (by the investor so called) Prime-Location which means:
-The Tower is next to one of the busiest S-Bahnstations in Zurich
-with the S-Bahn 3 minutes away from the mainstation and therefore very near the heart of downtown AND only 3 minutes away from one of the busiest trainstations in Europe
-the tower is in the downtown area
-you can reach the airport Zurich Kloten (which is one of central Europes most important airports) in less than 15mins with the S-Bahn
-you are more or less next to the city-highway

Are you kidding me? I travel enough to Zurich or to Geneva and all over Europe to see how small or medium the Swiss cities are but there is nothing wrong about this, bigger doesn’t necessarily means better… The whole Switzerland has a population of 7.4 million people http://www.citypopulation.de/Switzerland.html#Stadt_gross (based on Swiss statistics) and only 5 cities have barely more than 100’000 inhabitants and no one above half a million so… But of course if your “metro area” extends to Biel or to Lugano counting all the cows in between you may then reach the values you are talking about.

As I said, great projects for these three towns!

Cheers!

The point is that 80% of this 7,4mio live in a area of 40% of the country called "Mittelland" which is populated in ~ the same dense like the "Ruhrgebiet".

The table isn't correct at all (Geneva has over 200'000 inhabitants - Zurich over 370'000 in the proper city area)

There are other points that you have to attend when speaking about the size of the Swiss cities:
-the proper cities areas are mostly not according to the real city-boundaries which already gives a wrong image of the size
-Swiss cities are living from/for their agglomerations, which means that for example Zurich (talking about the proper city area now) a "day-population" (people working, "living" in the city but having home somewhere far outside) of up to a million (the numbers vary depending on the source)

but you're right that Zurich isn't same size a Tokio or London ;)

I am sorry to disagreee with you once again but Geneva never had a population over 200’000 people and Zurich just recently reached 350’000 people being one of the single cities that keeps growing in Switzerland by the end of year 2006. According to the official Swiss statistics (http://www.bfs.admin.ch/bfs/portal/fr/index/news/publikationen.Document.98867.pdf (http://www.bfs.admin.ch/bfs/portal/fr/index/news/publikationen.Document.98867.pdf)) the exact figures for the 31st of December 2006 are the following:

Zurich: 350’125 (347’517 - 01.01.2006)
Geneva: 178’603 (178’722 - 01.01.2006)
Basel: 163’081 (163’930 - 01.01.2006)
Bern: 122'178 (122'422 - 01.01.2006)
Lausanne: 118’049 (117’388 - 01.01.2006)

Note that the whole canton of Geneva that includes most of its suburbs has a population slightly higher than 430’000 inhabitants… Thus, where is your figure of over 700’000 coming from? The figures I gave you previously are all based on official statistics http://www.citypopulation.de/Switzerland-Agglo.html (http://www.citypopulation.de/Switzerland-Agglo.html) and reflect much better the reality than any other website.

So of course Zurich is much smaller than Tokyo or Mexico City but Zurich is also smaller than cities like Torino, Lyon or Valencia… ;)

By the way Zurich “Unique” airport ranks in the 18th position in the busiest European airports http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Busiest_airports_in_Europe_by_passenger_traffic.

Cheers and I am sorry for this offf topic!

The problems with the figures you're showing me here is, that these figures are not the total inhabitants because in the Swiss counting system 2 ways are used but it's to difficult for me to explain this.

Here the official stats by 1.1.2006:
370 062
source: http://www.stadt-zuerich.ch/internet/stat/home/key_figures/Wohnbevoelkerung.html

You are using data that's correct but unusefull in this discussion. This indicates you are using figures you find to prove your opinion and not the facts. The fact that you don't respond to facts beside the figures also indicates me this...

The figures I used are the official statistics from Switzerland (www.bfs.admin.ch (http://www.bfs.admin.ch/)) not the ones from your city which by the way does not mention anything about the date but just the year. If you look closely even your city’s web site shows a value of 1.1 million for the agglomeration (basically the same value of the whole canton) which looks more reasonable than your figures of more than 1.5 million based on nothing so far. This either means you don’t trust the figures that your own government issues or either you have different sources that I would like you to share with me or us.

When you say that “this is definitely wrong” regarding the fact that Zurich is smaller than cities like Torino, Lyon or Valencia you are actually implicitly saying that I am right for the other facts like when I say that Geneva never reached 200’000 people, isn’t it? Nevertheless I would be curious to know on what you base your reflections. Valencia city proper has over 800’000 inhabitants and this doesn’t include any suburbs (over 1.3 million including the suburbs) so tell me how Zurich is “bigger” in terms of population than this city you obviously do not know and I could tell the same for Torino a city over 900’000 people just for the city proper (although the city keeps loosing population since several years)…

I would also like to understand why my data are not useful in this discussion particularly when saying that they are correct (if I understand you properly). Then I am sorry but I did not understand what you said when saying “This indicates you are using figures you find to prove your opinion and not the facts. The fact that you don't respond to facts beside the figures also indicates me this”…

Anyway, I visit regularly all the cities I am mentioning and Zurich or Geneva are not what I would call big cities in Europe although they are quite important in other different aspects like the role they play in an international economical aspect.

By the way, why you have Zurich City or Basel City on the sign boards of the motorways? Isn’t German the official language? I would than translate it to Zurich Stadt although I don’t see how helpful this can be for a driver…

Prime Tower, Zurich
36 floors / 126 meters

http://www.primetower.ch/d/index.php

http://www.primetower.ch/d/pdf/PrimeTower_E.pdf

Magnificent, top-class – the 126 metre high Prime tower in Zurich West has already been showered with superlatives, even during the project phase; and for very good reason. Zurich’s new landmark comprising 36 floors sets the new benchmark for commercial properties in terms of architecture, transparency, appeal and perfection.

The Zurich Prime Tower is a Swiss Prime Site project. It is situated in the heart of the city on the site of the former Maag cogwheel factory, where Zurich has been undergoing a transformation process for several years. With the construction of the Prime Tower other investors
have plans for hundreds of new apartments, parks and lawns,
shops and restaurants.

40,000 m2 floor space, 1,200 m2 office space on each floor, room for up to 2,000 workplaces: the dimensions and opportunities afforded by the Prime Tower are impressive and transform Zurich’s First Site into a five-star residence. Working here means leaving the ordinary behind you. The view across the city and lake is magnificent, the brightness provided by natural daylight inspiring and the Sky Lounge on the 35th floor just breathtaking.

The octagon-shaped Prime Tower is the project unanimously chosen as the winner of an international competition involving top-ranking architects. The decision that came out in favour of the Zurich architect team Gigon/Guyer was influenced among other things by the “crystalline exterior that stands apart from its neighbours, the fine movements and projections, the many uses of the large ground plan and the static design with the pre-stressed ceiling”.

I would than translate it to Zurich Stadt although I don’t see how helpful this can be for a driver…Thsi question show that you haven't got a real clue what you're talking about.

City is also a German word meaning Innenstadt (engl. downtown) The motorway sign "Zurich-City" means that this motorway leads direct to downtown Zurich. The official name of the Zurich downtown district is also "Zurich-City".

The figures you are using are all correct, but they cannot be used to compare with cities/areas outside of Switzerland becaus they are the _Swiss_ definition of Agglomeration/Metropolitan Area and so on. It's wrong to compare them with foreign statistics basing on the UN-Definitions of Agglomeration/Met-Area, because the Swiss definition is "smaller" (for political and some other reasons)

Well, first of all I think you are pushing a bit too far when saying that I “haven’t a real clue” as my question is quite fair... “Downtown” or city center (centre) is usually translated in German by “Zentrum” as it can be seen in the vast majority of the Swiss German towns… By the way, I have never heard of district called “Zurich-City” and I often visit your town. Is “Unique Airport” also German or “Swiss Railways” as seen in your airport?
Secondly, if my figures are all correct (which by the way shows that I have some clue of what I am talking about), I still do not see why they could not be compared with other foreign figures. You are saying that the Swiss definition for agglomeration is smaller but can you explain it? Where is the end of Geneva’s or Zurich’s agglomeration in your opinion? Including Lausanne for Geneva or Biel for Zurich? I am sorry but the figures I showed are true may you like or not but don’t forget that the whole Switzerland has barely 7.6 million inhabitants so don’t tell us that Zurich or Geneva are bigger than what they are as they are only medium-small cities in Europe. I am not saying this to remove some kind of glory or importance to these towns as they definitely are in other terms but not in terms of population. Bigger doesn’t necessarily mean better!
Thirdly, without willing to offend I personally think you could have saved us (or me at least) with these kinds of irrelevant comments after being quite for several weeks.

Great tower by the way, I am looking forward to seeing it erected!

You are saying that the Swiss definition for agglomeration is smaller but can you explain it?Ask the BFS (Bundesamt für Statistik).

Your style of discussion is inappropriate. You're coming from the other side of the world and try to tell me based on a few webpages with some numbers on it and after some visits you've made that you know it better than somebody who's living here and is working in this business?

If you wouldn't mean this serious, it would be quite funny...

It's a legitimate question and he's right that "Zentrum" would be a more logical choice...

City is a (new) German word. Why shouldn't it be used for highway signs?
Zentrum is in German more used for small citys centre, not for a downtown district.

Construction starts in February 2008:)

28. November 2007

Yes, the area really would be perfect. This part of the town is really booming at the moment, so in the far future there may be a cluster there.

City is also a German word meaning Innenstadt (engl. downtown) The motorway sign "Zurich-City" means that this motorway leads direct to downtown Zurich. The official name of the Zurich downtown district is also "Zurich-City".

crap

I never heard anyone use the word "city" for saying "Zentrum" in Switzerland. They are in fact signs in Basel and Zurich, where "Basel-City" oder "Zurich-City" is written, but that's all.

In Basel we have also the "City-Ring" circle-like road from the central railway station to the north.

But "city" isn't used at all, and there isn's a district called "Zurich-City", maybe you mean Zurich Innenstadt or the district around the HB.

I use the word "City" frequently in Swissgerman as a general term for "downtown". And the people I know as well. It can mean proper downtown or extended downtown (incl. districts adjacent to downtown).

It's also used in songs:
"Vo dä Agglo i d'City" - "yesterday suburbs - today downtown" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIvxdV8_A2Y

There are many English words used in Swissgerman, some in the same way, some with a (slightly) different meaning.

And "City" IS also officially the name of a Zurich district. It's the area in the very center left side of the Limmat river where Bahnhofstrasse is located:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_(Z%C3%BCrich)#City
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_(Stadt_Z%C3%BCrich)

Furthermore, the trade and craft association of the Zurich inner city is called "City Vereinigung", there is the "City Parkhaus" (multi-storey car park), etc.

Why these pillars on the picture don't seem to have a regular pattern, btw?

it's not only the case with swissgerman, but german in general. the word city is used as often as the word baby nowadays. as you said, city is even often used officially in the german language. frankfurt for example also has a city-ring, an airport city, or the city west ...

Marti Holding AG, 27.08.2009:

Zurich’s Prime Tower – Marti’s Lofty Building Project

Marti is building Zurich’s Prime Tower. At 126 m high, it is the tallest building in Switzerland with 36 floors.

Client is the Swiss Prime Site AG. In a little bit more than 2 years, the first workers will be moving into their offices, drinks will be mixed in the Sky Lounge and the first articles will be sold in the shop on the ground floor: Zurich’s Prime Tower will be opening its doors in May 2011 right at the Hardbrücke suburban railway stop. This architecturally sophisticated project will encompass the Prime Tower along with the Cubus and Diagonal annexes.

The company Marti AG, Bauunternehmung, Zürich will be in charge of the construction work for erecting this stunning building on behalf of the general contractor, the Prime Tower joint venture. The subsidiary of Marti Holding AG, Bern is able to meet the ambitious deadline with skilful construction work, excellent job engineering, elaborate logistics and highly qualified personnel.

Due to the tower’s height of 126 m, two Wolff model self-climbing building construction cranes will be installed with a maximum hook height of 144.5 m and 40 m¹ length of jib. The cranes are re-anchored with bracing three times along the height on the tower’s exterior façade due to the horizontal forces caused by crane operation and wind loads. A grand total of 34,000 m3 of concrete will be prepared by Marti’s fully automatic site-mixed concrete equipment (Doubrava model Mobile City). The fact that concrete is processed at the construction site means that gravel and cement can be delivered outside of peak traffic periods while reducing the number of truck loads.

Work on the foundation started in January 2009 where a sole plate 2.20 m thick will be bearing the weight of 80,000 tonnes while 79 concrete piles with a diameter of 1.0 m and a length of 35 m¹ will back up the sole plate in the subgrade. In April 2009, work on the carcass of the upper floors began. In May 2009, the climbing scaffolding for cores 1-3 was installed. Due to the fact that the tower will be built without a façade shell, a protective shield (Xclimb 60) is the appropriate alternative. Mounted on the already concreted floors, it will guarantee the safety of the construction site personnel regardless of weather conditions.

The load-bearing structure of this high rise has to meet a whole series of requirements in terms of structural engineering, such as being earthquake-proof. Due to the building’s height and weight, an elaborate form of surveying is called for with a high level of measuring accuracy. In the coming 16 months, a total of 36 floors have to be built, which is a real challenge even for a construction company as seasoned and skilled as Marti Zürich.

the cladding looks crisp (although I'm not a fan of mirrored glas). what do people of zurich say about this project. it's got quite a significant impact on the city skyline already.

Well, I actually took a photo from the train (sorry for the poor quality) two days ago which shows a second tower being built... Maybe this is the building that Ni3lS is talking about?
Can someone tell us what is the second building shown on the right part of my pic?

Swiss Prime Site, 7 July 2010:

Prime Tower: topping-out ceremony for Switzerland’s highest building

Zurich, 7 July 2010 – The 126-metre Prime Tower and the adjoining Platform office complex have reached the topping-out stage. At the ceremony held to mark this event, the main players in the project expressed their confidence that the two buildings will be completed on schedule by May 2011. 68% of the rental area has already been let.

Zurich has a new addition to its skyline: The Prime Tower – Switzerland’s highest building at 126 metres. A topping-out ceremony has been held both for this high-rise and for the Platform office building also being erected on the Maag site. Along with the project partners, the event was attended by representatives from the authorities, the media and business. The responsible managers expressed their satisfaction with the project so far.

Markus Graf, CEO of Swiss Prime Site AG, is pleased about demand for the new office space as well as the progress of the building work: "Not only have we already let 68% of floorspace, but we can point to a mix of tenants that is an ideal fit for Zurich West, for the Maag site and for Swiss Prime Site." Graf thanked the project coordinators for their exemplary commitment and admirable flexibility at one of the currently most demanding structural engineering sites in any city in Switzerland. Swiss Prime Site, the leading Swiss real estate investment company, is investing CHF 355 million in Prime Tower and the Platform office complex along with the adjoining buildings Cubus and Diagonal.

This tower and associated lower complex is a great project that I have really enjoyed seeing develop. I hope it is the first of many for this area to hopefully make a larger complex. Really nice tower and any criticism levied at it being too short are rubbish. It has great presence even if it were among other taller towers and being on it's own (for now) it looks exceptional.

Ordering nike dunks (http://www.alltopshoes.com) from Alltopshoes is very easy and smooth, even if you’ve never placed an order on the Internet before. You will receive a confirmation email after you place your order and a shipping confirmation email with Ems or Fedex tracking number in about 24-48 hours after we ship your order. You can monitor your order status in our Online Order Tracking System.

Who cares? Nobody needs that anyway.

Swiss Prime Site AG, 21 December 2010:

News highlights at the Maag site in Zurich

Deutsche Bank (Switzerland) Ltd to move into five floors in the Prime Tower as of December 2011 – Occupancy rate reaches 85% – Gastronomic variety on Zurich’s top floor

The uniqueness of the Prime Tower and the location has persuaded Deutsche Bank (Switzerland) Ltd to lease five floors or a good 5,000 m2. Thus, five months before opening, the occupancy rate has already reached 85%. A diverse range of hospitality services will be on offer on the top floor of the Prime Tower.

Deutsche Bank (Switzerland) Ltd with its Private Wealth Management service will lease more than 5,000 m2 of office space in the Prime Tower, making it a future anchor tenant. In addition to its locations in Geneva, Lugano and St. Moritz, the bank will in future serve its high net worth clients in the regions Europe, the Middle East and Africa as well as Switzerland from out of the Prime Tower in Zurich. Factors that played a crucial role in the bank's decision to move into Switzerland’s tallest building in December 2011 are the prime location in Zurich West, the building's outstanding architecture, the effective and flexible spatial concept and above-average sustainability in accordance with the internationally recognized LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) green building certification system.

Approximately ten months before the opening of the Prime Tower and the adjoining Cubus and Diagonal buildings and Platform commercial building the occupancy rate has reached 85%. The first tenants in the Prime Tower will move into their offices in summer 2011. The hospitality zone and conference centre on the top two floors will open in November 2011.

Customized hospitality services
Swiss Prime Site has opted for a service offering optimally geared to the uniqueness of the highest building in Switzerland, its prime location in Zurich West and the target groups in the catchment area. The concept caters to a broad spectrum that includes both business people and private individuals. The distinguishing features of the concept are its diversity, variability and the high quality of both service and culinary offerings.

A restaurant, a bistro/bar and a cocktail bar/lounge with adjoining private dining areas will share the top floor. The fine dining restaurant offers a discreet, elegant ambience in which 90 people will be able to choose from a range of fresh, seasonal and international dishes. The bistro will have a livelier atmosphere for up to 80 guests and a menu that adapts to the time of day. The flexibly designed patio with space for up to 40 people can be used to expand the restaurant or bistro area if needed. In the cocktail bar as many as 60 visitors can pick from a broad selection of cocktails, antipasti and tapas. The cocktail bar can be divided into two separate private dining areas each seating 20 people, or together up to 40. As the individual areas are designed to complement one another both spatially and operationally, they can be combined for larger events (seating for up to 300 people; total area of 640 m2).

Between five and seven conference rooms are being installed on the 34th floor. The largest room will accommodate up to 100 people. These areas can also be catered.

Concept and operation by experienced professionals
The operating concept for the 34th and 35th floors was developed by hospitality specialists Peter Herzog and Jürg Landert. They will be responsible for the running of the hospitality zone and the conference centre in the Prime Tower. "In Peter Herzog and Jürg Landert we have won two proven and innovative gastronomy professionals. Their operational and marketing experience will ensure that the Prime Tower also becomes a byword for catering and hospitality", explains Peter Lehmann, Chief Investment Officer of Swiss Prime Site. Peter Herzog adds: "We attach great value to a level of quality and hospitality that is appropriate for the image of the Prime Tower and the spaces in this exceptional location."

The Zurich architect team Gigon/Guyer has been commissioned to plan, design and execute the interiors. The Gigon/Guyer designs were chosen in a competition with five other Swiss and international participants.

It is very good for Zurich to have such a tower. the shape is original, though the facade might be a bit boring.
Besides the whole complex is pretty dense and complete ;)
Time to build more skyscrapers?!

Swiss Prime Site AG, 06.12.2011:

Maag site, Zurich West

Official inauguration of Prime Tower

The 126-metre-high and fully occupied Prime Tower celebrates its official inauguration today, marking the interim highpoint of the successful development of Zurich West and Swiss Prime Site. Clouds, comprising restaurant, bistro bar and lounge situated on the top floor, will open its doors to the public starting from 12 December 2011.

One of the country’s most fascinating and renowned real estate construction projects has now officially been concluded, with the celebrated inauguration of Switzerland’s tallest building. The official grand opening of the 126-metre-high Prime Tower draws to a close the roughly 15-year development phase at the Maag site and symbolises its successful transformation from an industrial zone to a lively urban quarter. Swiss Prime Site has invested CHF 380 million in Prime Tower, the Platform corporate building as well as Cubus and Diagonal annex buildings.

A success story

Construction of Prime Tower according to the blueprints developed by architects Gigon/Guyer kicked off on 18 February 2008. The building’s cornerstone was laid on 19 November 2008, and the Tower’s topping-out ceremony took place on 7 July 2010. The construction consortium Losinger Marazzi AG/Steiner Ltd needed just 18 months to build up the 36 storeys.

The financial success of the buildings situated at the Maag site is measured, among other factors, by its full occupancy, future annual rental income generated of more than CHF 29 million and cumulated valuation profit in excess of CHF 110 million to date.

Sustainability and quality of location

Prime Tower’s far-reaching and forward-looking sustainability is underscored by the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) international seal of approval in the prestigious certification category Gold. In addition, the building complies with the Minergie standard as well as greenproperty seal of approval, which – similar to the LEED label – also takes into account the above-average quality of the location.

Roughly 3,500 workplaces have been created at the Maag site with the four new buildings. By the year 2015, the number of local residents in Zurich West is estimated to grow from the current 3,000 to around 7,000, while the number of workplaces in the quarter should surge from 20,000 to 30,000. Moreover, modernisation and expansion of the Hardbrücke railway station is envisaged, according to a development project by architects Gigon/Guyer. Swiss Prime Site also plans to develop the Maaghof real estate complex on its property located to the west of Prime Tower, consisting of more than 200 residential units.

New perspectives in food and drink

Clouds, comprising fine-dining restaurant, bistro bar, lounge and two patios situated on the 35th floor of Prime Tower, will open its doors to the public on 12 December 2011. Magnasch Joos is the Director of Clouds. The restaurant is operated under the auspices of multi-awardwinning star chefs Antonio Colaianni and David Martínez Salvany, who promise to serve up modern, straight-forward Mediterranean cuisine. Furthermore, a conference area with five to seven rooms located on the 34th floor will be available starting from January 2012, with the largest room providing seating capacity for up to 100 persons.

Definitely, it is a good start, but it looks a bit lonely without some friends. Zürich west is the best place in the city for projects over 100m.

i would love to see more like this..they should better cancel the swissmill project and build some nice towers like this..

I always start to dribble when i drive through hardbrücke and see the tower and I think: 'damn, finally zürich starts to grow up to the sky' and I hope this is just the beginning..
