I believe the only permanent patch of snow in the UK is a small area on the north face of Ben Nevis, other than that it all thaws.

Nice pics. :) But I've always wondered why there aren't a lot of trees on the Scottish Highlands.

Well no, what I meant was, given the location in a temperate zone plus lots of precipitation, I would expect they'd *all* be pretty much covered with thick forests. While some areas have trees, it's a lot less than I would expect.

I'd guess its a combination of the climate, the underlying rock, grazing and moreland being maintained for hunting.

Sheep grazing and poor / thin acidic soils

The glens have lush deciduous woodland of allowed to grow, but the slopes while perhaps once supporting a higher tree-line than now evident, have been deforested and the soil irreparably damaged. High rainfall now makes it too acidic for deciduous trees due to anaerobic respiration, and sheep grazing ensures any saplings don't get a chance to grow. A lot of these areas have been turned over to confier plantations however, as these trees can survive on the poor / acidic soil. There are some pockets reamining of the only indigenous confierous forests in Britain (Scots Pine), which also host the only endemic British bird (Scottish Crossbill)

Beautiful, living down in London its hard to imagine that we have such amazing scenery in this country.

Most people would fly off to Canada or Norway to see stuff like that, but its literally right on our doorstep.

:okay:
