I stumbled into it prior, while surfing the net. I have yet to crawl deeper into it and see how it is like. Anyways, thanks for posting it.

Any other positive news in/about Cauayan that is worth knowing?

Latest on the proposed/planned development of the coastal town of Isabela? Is it gaining tractions among all stake holders? Just curious.

For this year’s competition, Vigan City bested the four other component city-fiinalists for the award – Tagum, Tagaytay, Ormoc, and Santiago. A total of 17 cities nationwide were vying for the award.

The city’s child-friendly projects include the strengthening of day-care educational centers in the city’s 39 barangays; the Stimulation and Therapeutic Activity Center; the Geographic Information System; the Vigan Buridek

Vigan is 'Most Child-friendly'
By FREDDIE G. LAZARO
October 29, 2011, 6:54pm
VIGAN CITY, Ilocos Sur, Philippines — This world heritage city entered the “hall of fame” after receiving the presidential award as “Most Child-friendly City” for three years in a row, officials said Saturday.

Vigan City Mayor Eva Marie Singson Medina led local city government officials in receiving two trophies from President Benigno S. Aquino III in a simple ceremony at Malacañang last Thursday.

One was for being declared this year’s Most Child-friendly City in the component city category while the other is the hall of fame honor for receiving the said presidential award three times in a row.

Children’s Museum — the first in Ilocandia and the third in the entire country; the Management Information System in which vital documents and photographs are stored; the Children’s Theatre of the Burgos Memorial School West; the Solid Waste Management Program; the Children’s Hour of the Women and Children’s Desk of the Vigan police station; the E-Vigan project; and the records keeping and management of the member-agencies of the Council for the Protection of Children.

“I would like to share these awards with our people in Vigan because they are the key players in achieving these national recognitions,” said Medina.

“I would like also to thank the Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC) in recognizing our all efforts for the development of our children in Vigan City,” she added.

The lady mayor assured that the impact programs and projects for the children in Vigan City continue to be strong as the local government believes in investing in children as the hope for the future.

Iisa lang category for all the cities. Ormoc is also an independent city.

Last December pa nagbukas yung Rusi.

Hehehe... :)

Lets think positive.

Ok din naman mang inasal. Atleast may add'l choice...

regarding northstar mall naman, sana maglagay ang anumang bangko ng atm sa loob ng mall. you can actually use your credit card, debit card or atm card to shop at most stores but imo it would be more convenient if there is a cash machine available within the mall.

I am sure you did, and I'd say well done. I would imagine it is conveniently located. I am not too familiar with the right orientation of the city of Santiago.
Is it on your right or perhaps (left) going to Echague?

At any rate looks very impressive to me. And thanks 296619 for the info. Sure Santiago is really fast developing.

BTW where is the housing development where several foreigners opt to reside? I happened to met someone in our trip to Vienna, from the UK married to a lass from Stgo. and they are considering of acquiring a property in this area. Do you happened to know the place?

Santiago City’s cash awards to be appropriated for street light projects

by Merlito G. Edale, Jr.SANTIAGO CITY, Isabela, November 8 (PIA) -- The local chief executive of this city wanted that the cash awards that the city received recently won from national and regional searches such as Seal of Good Housekeeping, Gawad Kalasag, Pamana ng Lahi, Best Nutrition Program implementer, Most child-friendly city and Best anti-red tape implementer, will be appropriated for street light projects in the city’s major business district.

Nice one Ilagan! :)

Tapos yung building ng Bureau of Fire tagal nilang tapusin...

Date: 2006-08-14

There used to be only two provinces in the Cagayan Valley Region – Cagayan and Nueva Vizcaya. But a Royal Decree issued on May 1, 1856 created the province of Isabela from the portion of the provinces of Cagayan and Nueva Vizcaya. From Cagayan, the towns of Gamu, Angadanan and Echague [I]and from Nueva Vizcaya, its capital town Carig (now Santiago) and Palanan were segregated to constitute the province of Isabela. The new province was named in honor of then Queen Isabela II of Spain.

As if destined for greatness, Isabela is now dubbed as the "Queen Province of the North". This premier province is one of the most progressive in the country with Santiago City as the industrial center for Region 2 and Cauayan City, the commercial center. Isabela is also the second largest province in the Philippines.

Although the province did not play a major role in the revolt against Spain, it is in the coastal town of Palanan that the final pages of the Philippine Revolution was written when the American forces led by Frederick Funston finally captured Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo on March 23, 1901.

Isabela comprises an aggregate land area of 10,665 sq. kms., representing almost 40 percent of the regional territory. The province is bounded on the north by the province of Cagayan, on the south by Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino and Aurora, on the west by the sprawling fertile valley hemmed by the Central Cordillera Mountain, criss-crossed by the Cagayan and Magat Rivers, and on the east by the Pacific Ocean.

The province is also close to developed Asian economies such as Taiwan, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore. It is strategically located between the port of Cagayan Economic Zone and other fast-paced development centers in the country such as Subic and Clark Freeports. The development potentials of the province is further strengthened through the establishment of Isabela Special Agro-Industrial Economic Zone.

Isabela boasts of a variety of attractions and destinations. Fast-becoming a major tourist destination here is Palanan, one of the coastal towns, which is a center of biodiversity studies and researches. Its coastal areas host whales and dolphins. The site is also ideal for water sports such as scuba diving and surfing. Several NGOs are based in this town where they operate their monitoring of the whole length of Sierra Madre.

The Northern Sierra Madre Natural Park is a haven for researchers and outdoor enthusiasts. Its mountains rise to peaks of about 8,000 feet and is home to one of the country’s largest remaining rainforests with numerous unknown endemic species of flora and fauna. It was declared as number one in biodiversity in the country and also among the world’s top ten biodiversity hotspots. It has a 208-km. coastline and is home to beautiful caves, coves, bays and rich marine life.

The province is endowed with powdery fine white beaches and warm beds of crystalline waters, which span the shoreline of the coastal municipalities of Palanan, Divilican, Maconacon and Dinapigue.

Aside from ecotourism, there are other destinations and attractions here including the Magat High Rise Dam and Tourism Complex, known to be the highest and biggest dam in Asia when it was built in the late 1970’s. Its reservoir area of 4,450 hectares is perfect for fishing, boating and water skiing.

Some historical structures are still visible to this day like the big adobe stone church located in Cauayan City. Now called the San Pablo Church, it is said to be the oldest church in the province and its bell tower is the tallest in the region. Likewise, St. Mathias Church in Tumauini is unique with its cylindrical belfry, the only one of its kind in the country.

Isabela is also home to the "World’s Largest Butaka" or lounge chair at 11 feet and 4 inches in height, 8 inches long, 9 feet and 7 inches wide, and weighs 2,368 kilos. The lounge chair was constructed by 25 workers in 29 days.

Tourism development is fast trickling down to the region with the construction of new accommodation facilities, expansion of existing hotels, and the establishment of new dining facilities, particularly in Cauayan City.

Isabela’s average share of regional tourist arrivals is 45 percent (80,135 total visitors in 2004) with tourist arrivals in the province increasing at an annual average rate of 11 percent over the last five years, and an average tourist receipt of R0.04 billion generated for the last five years.

The Department of Tourism (DoT) Region 2, headed by Regional director Blessida Diwa, offers a 4-day/ 3-night tour package to Isabela. This Biodiversity Appreciation Tour includes a trek to Palanan Church and Aguinaldo Shrine; a river cruise along Palanan River; an overnight stay at Dicotcotan Beach Resort; island hopping to Honeymoon and Divilacan islands; and marine and terrestrial habitat exploration. The City of Santiago is an independent city (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippine_city) in the province (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippine_province) of Isabela (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isabela_province), Philippines (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippines). The city sits on a vast area of predominantly flat and fertile land in the Cagayan Valley (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cagayan_Valley), surrounded by the Caraballo Mountains (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caraballo_Mountains) to the south, the Great Sierra Madre (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sierra_Madre_%28Philippines%29) to the east and the Cordillera Mountain Range to the west.

Santiago, Queen City of the North, is about 326 kilometers North of Metro Manila. It lies between 16º35’00” to 16º47’30” north latitude and 121º25’00” to 121º37’00” east longitude.

Although Santiago is located in the southern periphery of Isabela, its economic importance is very much linked to its geographic centrality in the context of the regional space economy. In other words, the growth potential of the city is tremendous given the role that it presently performs in the surrounding area as a bridge in Region 2’s provincial network. ^^

W O W! Thread for Santiago City's Travel and Tourism. Congratz.

Bring it on, Luv to see pix of Santiago's Tourists destination. I've seen some of your posts in the regular Thread and they are quite stunning.

Aside from the colourful festivals, and some tourists destinations, would luv to see some iconic places, like historical museum for the city, old church, or an art gallery. I've seen some wonderful outdoor activities that could cater to extreme sports enthusiasts, you posted prior. Hiking and cycling path or trail close to the city, and other attractions that would appeal to repertoire of travellers. Keep this thread alive and extremely active, to showcase what Santiago City can offer to tourists both local and foreign travellers. Luv the city lights. Night life? perhaps even better and full of surprises. Again congratz.

The MABINI CIRCLE is a landmark in the Cagayan Valley Region. It is the meeting point of the two majors roads, Maharlika Highway and Santiago-Tuguegarao road, in Cagayan Valley.

Located in barangay Mabini, Santiago City, the circle serves as a reminder of the great hero Apolinario Mabini, an inspiration to everyone who would like to contribute something in our society despite physical difficulty.

Yep..

Japanese eye solid waste power plant in Isabela
By Charlie Lagasca The Philippine Star Updated November 14, 2011 12:00 AM 0 comment to this post

BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines – Talks are underway for the establishment of a multibillion-peso, Japanese-funded solid waste power plant in Isabela amid the mounting waste disposal problem in the province.

The project, according to the provincial environment and natural resources office (PENRO), could generate additional power through the waste-to-energy process for the province, which partly hosts the Magat Dam hydroelectric power project.

PENRO chief Geronimo Cabaccan Jr. said Japanese investors and experts are now conducting validation studies as to the volume of solid waste that the province accumulates to ensure the sustainability and economic viability of the project as well as its impact to the environment.

“The solid waste power plant would help ease the problem of proper disposal of solid waste such as household waste, construction and demolition debris, sanitation residue and waste from streets, which will be utilized to run the plant,” he said.

Cabaccan, however, said the provincial government and the project proponents have yet to finalize details, including the manner by which the solid waste would be collected from the different towns and brought to the plant site.

At least 22 of the province’s 35 towns and two cities are expected to benefit from the project.

The second largest province, Isabela, also the country’s leading corn producer and second to Nueva Ecija in palay yield, will also soon have its own paper mill to be built by a Korean-American consortium.

Gov. Faustino Dy III said the construction of the $100-million paper mill in Cauayan City’s former Monterey farm is expected to start in the first quarter of 2012.

The paper mill would utilize corn stalks and rice hay, usually treated as agriculture waste, to produce paper.

Isabela hosts a P740-million corn processing plant, said to be Asia’s largest, in Reina Mercedes town. The plant is owned and operated by the Mindanao Grains Processing Co. and Philippine Maize Federation Inc.

A P6-billion bio-ethanol plant is also being put up in San Mariano town by Green Future Innovation. The plant would be capable of producing some 100,000 liters of ethanol a day from sugarcane grown on an 11,000-hectare land in San Mariano.

Congratz for this new thread.

The article below might give us an idea.

Santiago Travel Guide– An Introduction

Santiago City, Philippines, enjoys the special distinction of being a first class city along with cities like Angeles, Dipolog (http://www.travelgrove.com/travel-guides/Philippines/Dipolog-Sights-c1487137.html) and Puerto Princesa (http://www.travelgrove.com/travel-guides/Philippines/Puerto-Princesa-Travel-Guide-c1501186.html). Located just 328 kilometers northeast of Metro Manila, Santiago gained recognition as a tourism destination quite late. Nevertheless, once the city was opened for tourism, it gained instant popularity – the city’s picturesque beauty, its advantageous location and its booming economy made it an instant hit with tourists worldwide. If the ‘Pattaradday Festival’ is the strongest attraction, the strongest point of Santiago travel is the city’s ‘safest-city’ tag. This Santiago travel guide offers a quick glance at the city.

Santiago City is surrounded by three mountain ranges. The layers ( from hills to Ifugao Mountains to main Cordellera) of the "Cordellera Mountains" can be best viewed at the top of Balintocatoc Hills, while the meeting point of the Sierra Madre and Caraballo is also visible at southeast.^^

The food is great and very affordable. Had a chat with the owner Mr. Gaddi at sabi niya very happy siya sa naging reception ng mga taga Ilagan sa business niya. In fact, lumipat na nga sa sila Ilagan for good at dito na rin nag-aaral mga anak niya. Binitawan na raw nila yung Cordon branch nila.

296619
November 19th, 2011, 07:50 AM
Among the TOTAL branches, pinaka malakas ang sa CORDON. Even yung resto doon. Pinaka malakas... Impossible na binitiwan n nila yun. Not unless nagkanya kanya na sila. By the way Gaddi, clan yan.

im just thinking, bakit kelangan nilang bitawan e malakas p nman yun.

Baka ipinasa lang sa kamaganak, kapatid. As far as I know, ang nagmamanage sa Cordon ay kapatid nila. And the owner is a female Gaddi married to an American guy. The reason why they were able to put up lots of Total branches not only in region 2 but also in R3....

The owner even told me that they always extend their closing time kasi marami parin nagpupunta kahit late na.

THE Winter Olympics in Vancouver is right around the corner, and one person competing that Filipinos should be aware of is Fil-Am Amanda Evora.
The 25-year-old Evora and her partner Mark Ladwig will compete in their first Olympics on Sunday, February 14 and Monday, February 15 in the pairs competition.
The two qualified to represent the United States in the 2010 Olympics after placing second in the US National Championships in Washington this past January.
Evora is considered to be the first person of full Filipino ancestry to represent the United States in a Winter Olympic games. Her father Vic, who attended the University of the Philippines, was born in Calapan, Mindoro. Her mother, Mary Anne was born in Ilagan, Isabela.

There have been other Winter Olympians with Filipino heritage representing the US such as Tai Babilonia (a two-time Olympian in pairs skating) and Elizabeth Punsalan (a two-time Olympian in ice dancing) but they were only a quarter and half Filipino, respectively.
Evora began skating at the age 6 and said her dream has always been to make it to the Olympics.
Now, she is not only living her dream but can go one step further – win a gold medal.

Congrats sa Ilagan:)

I think Santiago city was envisioned to be the financial center of the region where big banking and lending institutions were to be located at and incidental to this is, it being the first to become a city in R2 was also supposed to be the first choice for investors to locate their businesses at. It just so happened that in these changing times big business owners are also looking at the other towns' and cities' potentials and that's the reason why a big chunk of investments are now being shared equally by the big five of R2 that is Tuguegarao, Sta Ana, Santiago, Cauayan and Ilagan...Just an observation. :)

Your past and present members of congress. What is so interesting here is the province's jump from being a lone district until 1972 ( congress was suspended in 72-78 and 78-86 was regional representation thru Batasang Pambansa) to four after martial law instantly overtaking Cagayan's population which always had two districts in the same period.

Nice to know that there was a Fil-Am competitor during the 2010 Winter Olympic in Vancouver. Was just unfortunate that she and her partner didn't even make it to top 10. However was a big news here in Vancouver. A 100% ethnic Pinoy from Ilagan, has represented the US in the Olympic. That alone apeaks volume to some Pinoy in the US and here in Canada, to look at all the possibiliteis of getting involve into the athletic stage and could delve into it wholeheartedly. Even the Federal Gov't of Canada, through the Ministry of Sports is encouraging everyone who has the desire to get involve in athletics and sports from all ethnic community.

True....Santiago is fairly quiet for now, but I would assume that it is just a temporary set back, while all stake holders are in the planning and drawing mode. Cauayan, though, it has just started to gain tractions, in its economic industrial and commercial development, Santiago need not to be concern whether Cauayan would take the lead. But if it would, I don't think would be a big deal either. Sooner or later, Santaigo-Cauayan-Ilagan would all be connected down the raod, by mass transit.... If we couldn't get a railway system in the meantime then here's an idea that have been floated so many times before but but has never came into reality. We already have an existing expressway in the region but no one wants to re-develop it, or to be precise expresswaterway. This network has been there since the start of time itself and this old system is still very much used in europe and the US. Why don't they tap the private sector and dredge the river and make it navigable again just like for thousands of years before land transportation was invented. Then they can put high speed catamarans for express travels; cruise boats for tourists and honeymooners and tug boats for goods. In fact if this idea could become a reality the Cagayan River would be the first to be called EXPRESSWATERWAY in the world.

This idea is good. Involvement of the private sector in public projects have been very high in this current administration. If only they could get this idea on top of the drawing table.

Very interesting idea you brought up. Although we sort of touched about this issue briefly prior, we didn't really delve into it deeper. Perhaps, it is time to give it a try once more. The idea seems plausible. Dredging requires financing obviously, and tha's where the Private sector could come to the fore, and work with the government.

My only concern though, would be maintaining the water depth of the river. I understand that European rivers like the Rhine, Danube and even the Volga in Russia, feeds its tributaries mainly from the melting snow in the spring and into the summer months. I believe that to have cruise vessels/MV able to navigate waterways, rivers has to have certain level of water. If this issue would be addressed properly and the possibility is highly likely, then I am all for it.

Other issue that has to be addressed too, would be the acessibility to major cities in the Region. I am quite sure that Aparri-Tuguegarao, Ilagan and even Cauayan are all definitely along the course. .....yeah, the idea is certainly too great and appealing not to consider at all. It is difinitely a "Go" for me.

...And how about "speedneys" for town to town travels. These would be speedboat liners that can accomodate a maximum of 20 passangers that will be used for intertown travels. Wouldn't that be great? All LGU's along the river will have their own wharfs for loading and unloading purposes and of course this will also attract other businesses like eateries, souvenir shops and gas stations along the river.

Happy Birthday to our friend gatestar^^there and good graces. Have fun and be safe.

Question lang...

Whatabout the costing? Kasi based on reports, dredging is one of the biggest source of corruption...

Siguro papatok lang ito sa mga tourists but not to ordinary travelers dahil may land transport... So kung ako investor, magdadalawang isip ako na i-dredge yung river from Aparri to Echague...

Better parin ang railway system...

Quite frankly, I am clueless about the current condition of the Cagayan River.
Does it need dredging?, again, was just a response from one of the forumer. But does it need dredging to make it navigable by vessels. That depends, if it needs to maintain a certain depth and level of water. And if it doesn't need to be dredge, then leave it as it is.

If conventional mode of transportation is more suitable for the region then I am also all for it. Then...."Railway" indeed:cheers:

Calao Bridge is another landmark in Cagayan Valley. The arch distinguishes this bridge from others in the valley. ^^
