That's a typical ancestral house in the north.

All photos that reflects depth of the Cagayan Valley are all stunningly wonderful..breath of fresh air.

I am static that the "Balay ti Santiago" has several collections of artifacts and arts in its showcase.

The government should actually work with the arts and culture ministry to be able to come up with a workable solutions to preserve the history of the Region(cities/municipalities). Historical structure (ie. houses, churches and other edifice) should be refurbished rather than torn down for a modernized structure.:ohno:I thought it would be a shame if people/government would allow such activities to happen:ohno:

Would it be much to ask it all those pix with artifacts and other ancient arts be moved on the the next thread? would be muschly appreciated.

8 pupils affected with A (H1N1) in Isabela

By DEXTER A. SEE
August 5, 2010, 10:07am
SANTIAGO CITY, Isabela – The local health department revealed that eight pupils from a public elementary school have been infected with the A (H1N1) virus prompting them to raise the alarm signal over the expected increase of A (H1N1) cases, especially with the onset of the rainy season.
The positive test results of the eight pupils were relayed to the city health office by the Regional Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) which conducted laboratory analysis on the throat swab samples taken from the pupils who complained of having contracted flu-like symptoms.
With the expected spread of the disease to other pupils in the still undisclosed school, the city government facilitated the distribution of prophylaxis medicines to those who had close contact with the eight affected pupils in addition to undergoing close medical supervision over a 10-day confinement period.
Last July 21, twenty one pupils from the same school were rushed to the Southern Isabela General Hospital after they complained of suffering from flu. Health authorities subjected them to random swab tests to determine whether or not they have contracted the A (H1N1) virus.
Isabela is one of the provinces in the country which registered a significant growth in the number of A (H1N1) cases over the past several months, supposedly due to unpredictable weather conditions triggered by climate change.

Yeah...but what is it for by the way...need help on this one:lol: Thanks

By the way, yung pinakamagagandang kiskisan ng palay at feedmills nasa Isabela. Dalawa na yung napapasok kong ganyan sa Isabela, as in very modern; very small human intervention at voluminous ang production ng bigas a day.

Yep... maganda rin coastline ng Isabela specially sa Palanan area as featured in "The Correspondents"...

May grading yata diyan tapos doon nila ibinibase yung pricing nila.

Yep... maganda rin coastline ng Isabela specially sa Palanan area as featured in "The Correspondents"...

I am from Sta. Maria, since I was a kid pagpumupunta kami sa Manila naaalala ko dumadaan kami sa Pantranco station sa Santiago. wow ang ganda!!! :D:D:D

I checked google map in diffirent angles and I am positively sure that the photo is actually the coast of Palanan. Stunningly beautiful eh!

Perhaps...openning access road to the costal town of Isabela connecting the four municipalities of Palanan, Divilacan, Maconacon and Dinapigue to the rest of the interior of Isabela is not at all that bad. Just be more vigilant it there would be any illegal activities as a results of the project once completed. Building the road I thought would be a great idea. What your thought on this one guys...I am for it:)

By the way, yung pinakamagagandang kiskisan ng palay at feedmills nasa Isabela. Dalawa na yung napapasok kong ganyan sa Isabela, as in very modern; very small human intervention at voluminous ang production ng bigas a day.

When I was still working for the Provincial Government of Isabela, rumour has it that "Fuga" island in Batanes apparently is considered the unlock backdoor, (specially R2/&R1)for illegal entrants to the Philippines....In the thread of Batanes someone had posted about unidentified aircraft wiht passengers and cargo that seems like doesn't have proper documents.:ohno:

I wonder if that's how a lot of Chinese businessman got in to the country and are prominently visible in the Region?:bash:

On the positive side..there presence in the Region has an economic impact considering their business acumen.

However if they starts monopolizing certain segment in business industry the Region (which they tend to do most of the time).. and infringes other businesses (specailly small scale businesses) there would be a precarious outcome. don't you think?..

There is also noticeable presence of Korean in the region, I heard, is it true? However all those nationalities I mentioned, have gotten into the country legally..there shouldn't be any problem at all. The government should come up, with some workable concessions and restrictions that works both ways. Hopefully the economic spin-off of their presence would at least benifits the groups that needs the most, not the treasury chest of the politicians and other leaders. After all most of them are great business people and it is definitely a positve additions in the business community. Plus their presence in the Regions (country) facilitates the modernizations of some of the antiquated farming equipments..then I am all for it.

Any thoughts on this one?

Based on your analysis... I would totally agree wiht you that Isabela is not only second in terms of rice productions. Perhaps same as Nueva Ecija or slightly ahead. I can't comment on the corn production though. May be 2nd?

Looking at all those up and coming projects..Ilagan sure is progressing rapidly:cheers:

If I would ever come back to the Philippines...I might settle in those upcoming subdivisions in the rolling hills of Ilagan. I thought the location and the topography of the area is quite exciting...up and hilly....

Sir sigurado ko po magugustuhan ninyo ang location at topography niya, I always admire the Place whenever I passed by going to manila. Though I regret, na noong araw inaalok ako ng friend ko to buy a parcel of lot somewhere on that place pero di pa kasi develope noon yan, But as time goes bye parang lalong gumaganda ang ambience ng mga villages and subdivisions on that part of Ilagan.:banana::banana:

111466 of Ilagan responded kindly in regards to Isabela's rank in corn production in the country..which I am quite happy..apparently No. 1 (Numero Uno) indeed

Hi everyone!... Sorry ngayon lang ulit ako nakaonline...

Hi project JGR of Santiago!... welcome sa thread. Thank God, nagregister ka rin dito. Iknow marami kang alam about Santiago City...

About corn production, Number one ang Isabela ever since...

hahaha...:)

May be 2nd?

Yep. I totally agree about thier contribution in region two's economy. For one, they put up good milling facilities, and they are lending money to the farmers and small players. The bad thing is that, they are also good in hoarding to the point that they project that some of the rice produced in Isabela are imported when in fact it is produced locally... may mga ganyan na yung iba iniimbact sa mga barko... hahaha:lol:^^

Wah, very promising indeed!

Ang prob, kelan nila gagawing city yan, kasi hindi naman pwedeng buong budget ng Isabela ay dyan ibubuhos to the detriment of other towns and city.

Remember? Kaya natalo si Padaca is because of the whooping support of Cauayenos to Dy.

and Santiago is quite a gateway. Its tourism potential is now being developed.:)

except that, Ilagan has a coastal area and the capital town.
:)

Pero after 50 years, siguro hindi na ganito ang usapin about cities... mag-iiba na ang game ng bawat lugar... hehe:)

CEB eyeing public bus passengers
Written by Lenie Lectura / Reporter

http://cdn-www.airliners.net/aviation-photos/photos/2/1/5/1751512.jpg

Monday, 09 August 2010 20:05 -
CEBU AIR INC., which operates under the trade name Cebu Pacific Air, is living up to its billing
as the country’s low-cost carrier by competing for passengers with public buses.
In an apparent effort to dent the market enjoyed by public-utility vehicles, it is enticing bus
commuters to use the airline for faster travel at very low budget fare, which starts at P499 per
passenger.
“CEB continues with its mission to give opportunities for every Juan to fly. Those who are used
to riding the bus, or even ferry, for hours to get to their destinations can appreciate the ease and
convenience of traveling by air,” said the airline’s vice president for marketing and distribution
Candice Iyog.
“We are also highlighting our low fares to Malaysia, Vietnam and Brunei destinations in this seat
sale. Aside from increasing flights to Kota Kinabalu, we are also the only carrier to fly direct from
Manila,” she said.
The airline, in a statement, calls the starting fare a P499 ‘Go Lite’ seat sale. It opens its counters
to takers from August 10 to 11, 2010 or until seats last. The tickets would be good for travel
from October 1 to November 30, 2010.
Passengers from Manila to Cauayan, Laoag, Legazpi, Naga, San Jose, Tuguegarao and vice
versa, and from Davao to Cagayan de Oro can avail themselves of the P499 ‘Go Lite’ seat sale.
Cebu Pacific’s fleet of 21 Airbus A320 and eight ATR 72-500 aircraft, services the said routes.
Passengers traveling from Manila to Bacolod, Catarman, Calbayog, Cebu, Iloilo and Kalibo can
also avail themselves of P499 ‘Go Lite’ seats, while travelers from Manila to Tacloban,
Tagbilaran and Roxas need shell out only P599 ‘Go Lite’ seats.
‘Go Lite’ seats from Manila and Cebu to Boracay (Caticlan), and from Manila to Dumaguete are
also available for P899.
International routes included in this seat sale are P999 ‘Go Lite’ seats from Manila to Kota
Kinabalu, P1,499 seats from Manila to Brunei and Ho Chi Minh, and P1,999 seats from Manila
to Kuala Lumpur.
Those with check-in luggage will just add P100 upon booking. Passengers will then get 15 kilos
free-baggage allowance (FBA) on any flight, except Boracay (Caticlan), which only allows for 10
kilos FBA.
Cebu Pacific overtook Philippine Airlines’ passengers in the first quarter of 2010, making it the
largest airline in the Philippines.

First..thank you for the entlightenment...:)

I totally disgaree witt their business practices , if that's how they manage theirs. Hoarding products locally produced and sell it back to the people making it appears like imported is dispecable. If people uncovers what they're really up to there might be some precarious consequences. I hope the government would do something to put a lid on this kind of practices in the business community. :bash:

I am wondering about the type of aircraft that CEB flies to Cauayan from Manila. Is it B-737 Wide bodied
B-727 Long
Airbus 319 or 320
or a turbo-jet from Bombardier (72 seater)

I am sure it is safe.....same with PAL..I hope

By the way..you just came up with a nicer accronym....SICaT..neat!:) you did it again, wow

Can someone tell me which type of aircraf does CEB uses to fly to Cauayan? Thanks muchly:) What days of the week...or is it everyday....How about PAL..is it the same days flight schedule? and aircraft type?

THE MANILA -CAUAYAN. CEBU UTILIZES AN ATR TYPE OF PLANE.. IM JUST WONDERING ABOUT THE CLASSIFICATION OF CAUAYAN AIRPORT.. THE AIRPORT HAS A RUNWAY LENGTH OF 2KM. ABLE TO ACCOMMODATE AIRBUS PLANE BUT STILL THE AIRPORT IS CONSIDERED COMMUNITY AIRPORT..

THE TUGUEGARAO AIRPORT GIVES A TWICE A DAY FLIGHT SERVICE FOR CEBU PACIFIC AND A ONCE A DAY FLIGHT FOR AIRPHIL EXPRESS/PAL EXPRESS. ITS FLIGHT TO TUGUEGARAO UTILIZES AN ATR AND AN AIRBUS 319 OR A320 TYPE OF PLANES.. THE 2KM RUNWAY OF TUGUEGARAO CAN ALSO ACCOMODATE BIGGER PLANES..

There is definitely an urgent need of an access road to the waterfront municipalities of Isabela..to get to those untapped tourist destinations. Looking at the google map of the Isabela coastal town reveals the miles and miles of unspoiled sandy white beaches....what a wonderful place to live I thought.

and Santiago is quite a gateway. Its tourism potential is now being developed.:)

except that, Ilagan has a coastal area and the capital town.
:)

Pero after 50 years, siguro hindi na ganito ang usapin about cities... mag-iiba na ang game ng bawat lugar... hehe:)

ESTABLISHED NA KASI ANG SANTIAGO CITY.. ITS NOT QUITE A GATEWAY BUT ITS REALLY A GATEWAY FOR CAR,QUIRINO, VIZCAYA PROVINCES IN TERMS OF COMMERCIAL MATTERS..

AS FAR AS ILAGAN IS CONCERNED. ITS REALLY AN EMERGING COMMERCIAL COMPLEX OF ISABELA.. SOME OF THE BIG HOUSING DEVELOPERS ARE SITUATED IN ILAGAN.. IF YOU NOTICE THEY HAVE, I THINK THE LARGEST IN TERMS OF POPULATION IN ISABELA.. MEDYO NAKIKITA KO NA COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT SA ILAGAN.. LUMALAWAK NA ANG SAKOP NG COMMERCIAL AREA WHEREIN BEFORE THEIR MARKET IS SITUATED ONLY JUST AFTER CENTRO.. PAG NAAYOS NA NILA ANG INFRA NILA TO REACH SOME OF THE REMOTE AREAS NG ILAGAN, IM SURE LALAKI PA LALO ANG SAKOP NG COMMERCIALIZATION NG ILAGAN PATI NARIN ANG TOURISM NILA.. DATI KASI IN TERMS OF COMMERCE AND TRADING ACTIVITIES NG ILAGAN AY NAKATUTOK LANG SA TUGUEGARAO.. PERO NGAYON NAGIGING EMERGING GIANT CITY NA SIYA.. PAGDATING SIGURO SA EDUCATION MEDYO HINDI PA, NA OBSERVE KO KASI SOME OR MAYBE MANY OF ILAGAN PEOPLE PREFER TO STUDY COLLEGE IN TUGUEGARAO CITY.. SYMPRE HINDI LANG BASTA HINAHANAP NATIN ANG MAKA GRADUATE NG COLLEGE KUNDI YUNG PRESTIGE OF BEING A GRADUATE OF PRESTIGIOUS UNIVERSITY LIKE ST LOUIS, MEDICAL COLLEGES, CSU AND ST PAUL DI B..

I ALSO HAD A CLASSMATE IN ST LOUIS UNIV. HES FROM ALICIA, ISABELA.. MAY COUSIN'S FRIENDS FROM SANTIAGO CITY ARE ALSO ENROLLED IN ST PAUL PHILS IN TUGUEGARAO..

NONETHELESS, ILAGAN IS MY FAVORITE.. IN THE FUTURE ILAGAN WILL EMERGE THE LARGEST CITY NOT IN TERMS OF LAND AREA BUT IN URBANIZATION..

ANY DISPUTE MGA KAPATID PARA MAY MAGANDANG USAPAN NAMAN TAYO..

You raised an interesting point...I myself likes the topography of Ilagan..I thought it is more exciting for residential development....I could visulized the streets and roads that looks like a roller coaster..I thought it is neat..However Santiago has the potential to develop an attractive residential areas. I understand they have some rolling lands, hills and even mountain sides...developin those areas into a residentials would give a sweeping view of the city and the rice paddies as well. I though it could be a great featurers...........:)

waah... HI po:)

yep... Sorry for using the word quite. I just used it to have a bit of conservatism... Mahirap na, baka kasi masyado akong nagclaiclaim pag talagang sabihin kong gateway... hehe...:) Pero since you claimed it, I second the motion...

Regarding Santiago in the future... Yep... Santiago can't really compete with the Land area of Ilagan and any natural resources it has... But i think Santiago will continue to lead in terms of Commercialization ( Pero ang labanan dyan is pagandahan nalang in thew future...) And Santiago will need the help of its neigboring towns like Cordon, Ramon, San Isidro, part of Echague for the creation of Metro Santiago to level the playing field in terms of Land area.. heheh...^^

i think we're having some good points mga kapatid.. speaking of metropolitan.. you know what guys.. unlike some of the metropolitan areas in the philippines, these metros are truly neighbors. i mean in terms of distances from one city to the other, magkakalapit tlga sila.. lets us take for instance, metro batangas and metro dagupan.. if in case, i hope so, that any of the cities in region II will create its own council for the creation of metropolitan, medyo magkakalayo ang mga local govt involved.. just imagine the land area of isabela or cagayan.. ang laki di b.. i think from santiago to cauayan would take your time about 1hr siguro considering traffic jams is not a problem in region II.. what your point mga kapatid??

Tama... I dot think Cauayan will become part of Metro Santiago in case...

For one Santiago has a big land area compared to the land area of Dagupan or Metro Manila cities... But if we are going to look on the direction of National Highway(NH), The span of NH in Santiago is hindi kasing laki ng span nito sa Cauayan o Ilagan. I mean super lapit ng Santiago City proper sa downtown ng Cordon at San Isidro ( Ramos local) and a part of Echague's downtown after Ipil bridge. So kung kukunin natin ang pop. ng Tao dyan, aabot ng 200 thou plus excluding the people in the rural areas... then we take into consideration the number of businesses in those downtowns and city proper... May pagkamarami rami din sa tingin ko... Sa tingin ko NH ang impetus for the creation of Metro Santiago.... Hindi ko masyado kabisado sa Cauayan but they can used
whatever Reina mercedes has... :)

lets take the case of metro naga.. they have this accord that pave the way for the creation of metro naga.. and take note bro, they have only one city - naga and all local govt units involved are municipalities.. these municipalities are categorized as 4th class lang.. so i think hindi kelangan city o dapat 1st class city ang dapat na kasama sa metro santiago,if in case lang..to create this metro santiago, these municipalities around the city, or these local govt units should have this kind of a purpose or a respective major job to do to create a good council.. for example, ramon, isabela.. what major job of ramon that could contribute most to create this metro santiago?? pwede tong magat dam as the center for irrigation and electricity generation.. how about echague?? YUN PO WALA NA AKONG ALAM ABOUT ECHAGUE.. siguro nga sa ISU as center for research for agriculture.. CORDON?? on what aspect cordon would have a major contribution to the council?? HINDI KO RIN PO ALAM KUNG ANO MERON SA KANILA... ALICIA?? do we have any thing about alicia that would have an excellent contribution to the council??

IF A GOAL IS SET UP TO CREATE A METRO SANTIAGO AND THESE MUNICIPALITIES HAS PROVED ENOUGH THAT THEY HAVE WHAT IT TAKE TO CONTRIBUTE MUCH TO THE BETTERMENT OF A METROPOLITAN THEN PWDENG PWEDE TAYO MAKAPAG CREATE NG METRO SANTIAGO.. I THINK ITS NOT A REQUIREMENT NA DAPAT LAHAT NG KAPITBAHAY NG BAYAN ANG MAUUNLAD..

Cordon at San Isidro ang magiging extention ng commercial areas ( by the way, Cordon is already showing signs of commercialization)

Ramon will play an important role in tourism specially na sa kanila ang Magat

Echague will play an important role in agricultural modernization since dyan based ang ISU...

Then each member will help in developing the potential tourism sites at flow of goods, at sa tingin ko, kaya nila at magaganda ang estado ng mga lugar na ito.

By the way, lahat to ay part ng 4th district of Isabela...

Santiago City Pictures
^^On the Road to Cauayan City...

Santiago is the first city in region 2. It was declared as independent city in 1994. After six years, Cauayan was declared as a component city. These two progressive cities plus numerous first class municipalities (Ilagan, Echague, Roxas among others), and Isabela's natural wonders ( Sierra Madre Natural Park and Magat Dam Tourism Complex) make Isabela the Premier Province of the North! :)...

Below are (Santiago City) pictures taken while driving along National Highway (Pan-American Highway) going to Cauayan.^^

Santiago City, Isabela (http://travel.yekram.com/?p=131)

March 26, 2009 | Markey (http://travel.yekram.com/) in Cagayan Region (http://travel.yekram.com/?cat=389), Isabela (http://travel.yekram.com/?cat=411) | 2 Comments (http://travel.yekram.com/?p=131#comments) |
Santiago City is located in the southern part of the province of Isabela, along Maharlika Highway, between the municipalities of Cordon and Echague. It is about 79 kilometers south of Ilagan, the capital of Isabela, and 328 kilometers from Metro Manila. It is situated between 16deg35′N to 16deg47′30″ N and121deg25′E to 12 1deg37′E. It is surrounded by the municipalities of Cordon (west), Ramon (northwest), San Isidro (north), Echague (north), and by Quirino province (south). The topography of the city varies only slightly, 80% being nearly flat, 17% being moderately rolling, and 3% steeply undulating and rolling, towards the southern end of the city
Before the Spanish regime, the place was known as “Carig”, which means “tall straight trees”. The first native settlement in the area was established by the Ybanags and Gaddangs along the banks of the Carig River, presently known as Diadi River. In January, 1910, Carig was made into a municipality, separate from Echague. I was also given a new name, Santiago, after St. James the Apostle, the patron saint of the town. For 84 long years, it remained a municipality. It was only in May 5, 1994, under the leadership of Mayor Jose “Pempe” Miranda, that the town of Santiago finally became a city.
From a primitive settlement, Santiago has indeed grown into urbanism. This is manifested by the magnificent city hall, constructed at the turn of the millenium, that comfortably houses the local government offices. The commercial area of city, located along Maharlika Highway, also shows rapid growth. Its public market, known as “Bagong Palengke”, is the site of the wet and dry markets, shoe stores, boutiques, fast food stores, grocery and department stores. Educational institutions are also present in Santiago city, from primary schools to tertiary schools, such as the Northeastern College at the poblacion and La salette College at Dubinan.
Things to Do and see in Santiago City, Isabela.

Magat Dam Tourism Complex (Magat Hydro Electric Power Plant)
Asia’s biggest dam project at the time of its construction. It serves the primary function of power generation and irrigation. Its reservoir area of 4,450 hectares has a great potential for water-based recreation like fishing, boating and water skiing, among others. The plant is accessible by passenger jeepney and bus from Santiago City.
Our Lady of Lasalette Shrine
The shrine stands on top of the Holy Hill overlooking Santiago City and it symbolizes that Roman Catholic is the dominant religion in the City.

Wahhha... Ito yung street na tinatawag kong Quiapo of Santiago City... Dyan may mga unpleasant electric post at maingay dahil nga ala Quiapo...

At expect niyo na na magulo dito dahil pinapagitnaan ito ng old and New Public market... But credit must be given to the Navarro Admin for improving the image of this area...

According to Willy_Jerk, asahan na aayos ang new public market once natapos na yung Santiago Commercial Complex which may cater to the other vendors...

I have noticed, may mga ala Roxas Boulevard Lights dyan... - Good work...

despite all improvements, much has to be done to make our place beautiful. I'm glad the Navarro admin is doing a great job and proving the detractors wrong. The Navarro admin must however accept constructive criticisms and correct whatever mistake it committed if there is any.

Cheers to Santiaguenos!

Thanks for the nice words. :)

hehe, yep, four lanes lahat ng national and provincial roads and some city roads with provision for sidewalk and parking...

Yung mga brgy at ibang city road two lanes lang pero may provision for sidewalk.

Natioanal, provincial and some city roads are well lighted tulad din dyan sa San Fernando at iba pang city sa R1...

Even the barios of Santiago city are well-lighted tulad ng pinost ko dati... :)

Hope makapunta ka dito... :)

Thanks for appreciating.^^

Yun palang ibang four lanes, nagiging two lanes nalang dahil sobrang dami ng sasakyan, inooccupy nila yung ibang part...

10 reasons why Cagayanos love Isabela

1. Isabela is Cagayan's little sister who has made it big
2. Isabela is Cagayan's partner in promoting regional development and economic sel-reliance
3. They are side by side in helping the other sister provinces achieve economic progress and higher status
4. They both promote commerce for neighboring provinces who are still developing their own commercial centers
5. Cagayanos and Isabelinos regard themselves as very close relatives as if they come from one and the same province when they are in a foreign country
6. If and when the Philippines become federated, Cagayanos and Isabelinos would side by side, lead in lobbying for a separate state for Cagayan Valley and develop their own ideals and identity apart from the rest of Northern Luzon
7. People from the region, because of being isolated by mountain barriers from the rest of Luzon have developed a common bond and ideology that people from other regions could not relate to, that is, prgoress for the whole region and not for one city, town or province only.
8. Cagayanos and Isabelinos are together in fighting ecological and wildlife destruction
9. Cagayanos and Isabelinos are leaders in political dynamism as evidenced by the recently held elections. We are ready to accept the outcome as matured electorates, move on and help whoever will emerge as leaders
10. The 10th and most important reason why Cagayanos Love Isabela: please scroll down

Cause Isabelinos equally love Cagayanos.

Singaporean firm eyes RP sorghum biofuel feedstock
By MELODY M. AGUIBA
August 11, 2010, 2:49pm

A Singaporean company is eyeing a supply of 1,000 metric tons (MT) per day of sweet sorghum biofuel (ethanol) feedstock from the Philippines which may require a plantation of 4,090 hectares needing P100 million in investment to develop.

A Singaporean mission visited sweet sorghum farms in Region 2 (Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Santiago, Batanes) in the hope of finding a source for the environment-friendly bio-fuel feedstock.

“We showed them our sweet sorghum farms for two days. Singapore has the capacity to produce its biofuel, but it needs the feedstock from other countries,” said Raul B. Palaje, Biofuel Project-in-Charge of the Isabela State University-Extension Office (ISU-EO) in Bureau of Agricultural Research (BAR) Techno Forum.

Singapore is believed to already have its own distillery for biofuel production.

ISU-EO is trying to convince the Singaporean firm, which chose to keep its identity classified, to put up the biofuel plant in the Philippines so as to enable generation of local employment in the country.

But Singapore is a country that has its own strategies for business development, he said. Singapore, a major shipping hub in Asia, trades a lot of goods and reships these to different countries.

“They’re evaluating the Philippines as a source of the feedstock along with Vietnam and Indonesia,” said Palaje.

If the Cagayan Region can supply only a portion of the company’s requirement, say 60 percent, the Singaporean firm is willing to consolidate feedstock volume from other Philippine regions. Cagayan or the Ilocos Region is ideal as a sweet sorghum origin considering its proximity to Singapore through the Port Currimao in Ilocos Norte.

The feedstock can also come from other sweet sorghum-planting provinces such as Ilocos, Pangasinan, Southern Tagalog (Batangas, Laguna, Cavite, Rizal), or Southern Luzon (Mindoro provinces which have been planting sweet sorghum).

Production cost of sweet sorghum is between P18,000 to P25,000 per hectare.

This will entail more than P100 million investment for the Singaporean requirement as sweet sorghum farms in the country can produce 45 to 55 MT per hectare per season. Each season can last over six months.

A sweet sorghum cropping in particular lasts over an estimated 110 days, much shorter than that of sugarcane, nine months. It also requires around two-thirds less of the water requirement of sugarcane. That besides its suitability to be grown on marginal land (non-irrigated or rainfed, hilly).

ISU-EO has been extensively commercializing products made of sweet sorghum as the crop is believed to be a less water-thirsty, climate change-suitable crop.

ISU-EO’s other commercial products include cookies, paper, syrup, and flour. It has developed a technology to make sweet sorghum syrup a palatable product comparable to most pancake syrups.

This is through allowing heating of the sweet sorghum juice to cool down once it reaches a temperature of 107 degrees centigrade. Then temperature of heating should stabilize to 80 degrees.

SANTIAGO CITY, Isabela — A nephew of former senator Heherson Alvarez died after strong winds pushed him over a cliff while on a picnic with friends in Batangas over the weekend.

A report from the Nasugbu police said Reigel Alvarez, 19, Federation President of Santiago City’s Sangguniang Kabataan (SK), fell off a cliff in Tali Beach Subdivision, Balaytigue village, Batangas around 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

According to Isaac Vallejo, the subdivision’s assistant security officer, a water pump operator reportedly cautioned Alvarez’s group against going near the cliff because the strong winds at the time made it perilous for anyone to roam in the area.

The young Alvarez allegedly trekked dangerously near the cliff and fell to the sea below after being swept by strong winds. He slammed against the sea wall because of the strong water current.

His friends, identified as Michael Kuz, 32, and Edward Cabinian, 42, narrated that they tried to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the victim but to no avail.

The victim was immediately rushed to the Apacible Memorial District Hospital but attending physician Maureen Villanueva declared him dead on arrival. — VVP, GMANews.TV

Supreme Court decision vs local executives for closing Isabela radio hailed
By Charlie Lagasca (The Philippine Star) Updated August 08, 2010 12:00 AM Comments (0) View comments

BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya , Philippines – The recent Supreme Court decision ordering local officials of Cauayan City, Isabela for causing the shutting down of a radio
station there has been described as triumph of “freedom of the press and expression.”

Former Isabela Bishop Sergio Utleg, now the bishop of Laoag (Ilocos Norte) diocese, said that the Bombo Radyo in Cauayan City stood its ground in defending press freedom while its case was on trial until it went as far as the High Tribunal.

Utleg was the Isabela bishop when the Cauayan City government, then headed by mayor Caesar Dy ordered the closure of Bombo Radyo-Cauayan in 2004. He, with various militant groups, was fighting for the resumption of the radio outfit that time until it went back on air in 2006.

Likewise, prominent lawyer Romulo Macalintal, one of the first legal counsels of the radio station when it filed a case against the city government over closure order, said the decision further strengthened freedom of the press against those wanting to trample on it.

“May the decision serve as a lesson, if not a stern warning, to those who may be similarly-minded in violating one’s constitutional right of free speech and assembly,” he said.

Macalintal said that the SC decision “also gives meaning to the provision of the Omnibus Election Law that no one could close down a media entity during election period without authority from the (Commission on Elections).”

Said radio station had been closed down in 2004, the year the synchronized national and local elections were held where former hard-hitting Bombo broadcaster Grace Padaca defeated then governor Faustino Dy Jr., eldest brother of then Mayor Caesar Dy.

Zoning clearance

The city government then ordered the closure of the more than 30-year-old Bombo Radyo dzNC, a regionwide radio station, for its alleged failure to obtain a zoning clearance as well as mayor’s and business permits to operate. It also claimed that the station failed to secure a land conversion permit before it occupied the site where it is now based.

The Court’s second division, in its one-page resolution dated June 16, 2010 junked the motion for reconsideration of the city government to overturn last year’s ruling ordering them to indemnify Bombo Radyo-Cauayan for shutting down its operations in 2004.

The Court also ordered Dy and the co-respondents in the case, then city administrator Felicisimo Meer, then city legal counsel Racma Fernandez-Garcia and one Bagnos Maximo, to pay the radio station P5.5 million as damages and as attorney’s fees.

All together for the Dream Tour at the walkway tunnel of the Manila Ocean Park.

Rheny Mina’s world may be literally very dark, as this 20-year old girl has been blind since birth, but the future she “sees’’ for herself is so bright that she can’t help but be very optimistic about it.
“I want to finish my studies and then then take up my master’s degree in Education, and then my PhD in Education and in Information Technology. I want to teach children and share with them my knowledge,’’ Rheny says, so visibly sure of herself.
A second year Information Technology major at the Cagayan Valley Computer and Information Technology College (CVCITC) in Santiago, Isabela, Rheny then proceeds to tell us how excited she is to be studying, specially that among her five siblings, she is the only one who has reached college. She also shares how she gets around as she takes up an IT course even without seeing a thing, by using the school’s talking computer and Braille books.
Rheny has been quite an achiever.
For one, she loves writing and has won an essay writing contest on the theme “Kung May Access, May Success’’, besting participants from all schools at the municipal level. She also says she idolizes Roselle Amnbubuyog, the first visually-impaired Filipina to become summa cum laude at the Ateneo de Manila University in 2001, and dreams of meeting her someday.
Even Rheny’s 63-year-old mother Aling Loreta is amazed at her daughter’s passion for learning. “Gustong gusto niya talagang makatapos ng pag-aaral kaya kahit matanda na ako, talagang sinasamahan ko siya, basta alam kong ikabubuti niya at matututo siya,’’ Aling Loreta says. (“She really wants to finish her studies. That is why even if I am already old, I go with her to places and activities where I know she will learn from.’’)
It is amazing then how someone who has not seen even the least bit ray of light in her life could be so excited to join a field trip and interact with the 10,000 marine creatures housed at the Manila Ocean Park. But Rheny is so certain she would enjoy these wonderful creatures even without seeing them. After all, she sees them all clearly with her heart.
DREAM TOUR
And so with 22 other visually-impaired and hearing-impaired children, their parents and teachers, Rheny and Aling Loreta last weekend rode the bus that would take them to Manila on a “Dream Tour.’’
Organized by the Parent Advocates for Visually Impaired Children Inc. (PAVIC) Isabela with topnotch photographer and special needs advocate John K. Chua and his wife Harvey, Dream Tour is the realization of a dream long cherished by the people behind PAVIC Isabela.
“We want to give our children the chance to make their dreams real. Everybody worked hard to translate this dream into action,’’ says team leader Belinda Polintan, mother of Gerald, a visuallyimpaired boy.
And so obstacles notwithstanding (among them funds!), the Dream Tour bus rolls off to Manila to take the special needs children to places such as SM Mall of Asia, SM Nortth Edsa, aboard the MRT, to Manila Kiddie Zoo, and finally to Manila Ocean Park where the hearing-impaired children had the time of their lives looking at the colorful aquatic creatures, the visually-impaired relishing the experience that they were one with the sea animals, and their parents collecting memories that would forever be etched in their hearts.
Tailing the group closely are volunteer photographers who join to capture through their lens the joy in the hearts of the children and their parents in being able to visit these places for the first time, in being able to touch a real bird or a snake for the first time, in meeting Maali, the elephant for the first time, in riding the MRT for the first time, or in “seeing’’ wonderful marine creatures up-close for the first time.
These volunteer lensmen have been actively participating in the Photography with a Difference advocacy that John K. Chua has started and is now spreading among like-minded individuals, working with organizations such as Autism Society Philippines (ASP), Down Syndrome Association of the Philippines, ADHD Society, Persons with Disability and Company (PERDISCO), and PAVIC, and being supported by believers like Canon and SM Malls. These photo “workshops’’ have now been replicated throughout the different provinces, where camera clubs and groups of people with disabilities come together and — indeed make dreams come true.
Dreams fulfilled
The Dream Tour schedule had been hectic, what with the nine-hour bus trip from Isabela to Manila, and the packed itinerary.
But the children, including Rheny, seem tireless. There is nary a sign of letting up on their city adventure.
Aling Loreta, for instance, is busy looking at the fishes housed in one of the chambers in Manila Ocean Park, describing them to Rheny. At times, she would hold Rheny’s hand and guide it on the glass panels, as if asking Rheny to feel the sea creatures. Rheny, for her part, would really “feel’’ what is behind those glass chambers.
At the end of the tour, Rheny’s heart is full of gladness. She rattles off to us about the things she has “seen’’ , the places they have gone to, her future plans for herself, and her dream to be a writer.
This three-day Dream Tour has obviously inspired Rheny to continue dreaming, and cultivate her passion to achieve more, even without tne benefit of eyesight. If only for this unique experience that would last these children a lifetime, the Dream Tour has indeed been an utter success.

EXACTLY! That's why it is being called a bustling city. Though may not be as big as the cities of Olongapo, Baguio, Tarlac and others, Santiago is heading in to that way so fast. It is attracting too many people day by day! :)

Thanks for the positive outlook... I believe facelifting is an specialization of the Santiago city officials, that's why I am not that worried... hehe...
