I don´t know if Stormshadow or someone else has opened a thread on N´Djamena earlier, I couldn´t find it. So if there is any, we can close this one again and copy out the pics into the existing one.

Chad's economy has long been handicapped by its landlocked position, high energy costs, and a history of instability. Chad relies on foreign assistance and foreign capital for most public and private sector investment projects. A consortium led by two US companies has been investing $3.7 billion to develop huge oil reserves in southern Chad. Oil production came on stream in late 2003. Chad began to export oil in 2004. Cotton, cattle, and gum arabic provide the bulk of Chad's non-oil export earnings.

It does not look as bad as I would have expected given the nation's economic situation.

I never created a thread for this city, Matt. So this is the first one that represents this city on SSC. Great job too. It's difficult to put together a set of images for this particular city, I tried long ago and abandoned it. The city reminds me of other Sahelian cities such as Bamako and Niamey. However, Bamako seems to be much more developed than Niamey and N'Djamena.

Thanks to all for leaving a comment.:)

As for the aspect, "it looked better than expected". Well, only partly. Again streest are filled with sand and filth, plastic litters the green medow in front of the government building and this hasn´t got anything to do with being a desert country. Gulf countries are also desert countries but very clean, even sterile. Something that I cherish a lot.

Let´s not forget that Chad is a growing exporter of oil. Oil investement by American and Asian firms were made a while ago and the counry is increasingly turning its eye and attention to China.

So I would like to see more improvement in the years to come.

Stormshadow, good to now that there isn´t another thread on N´djamena. I hesitated for a while to open it but then thought this country nneds some exposure to in a forum dedicated to Africa.:)

Besides a few newer hotels/structures here and there this city is very underwhelming to be an capitol of an Chad...It has more of a big village/town feel than major city feel imo..i'm not sure how major an oil producer Chad is but you would Chad's government would atleast try to modernize the capitol city(if not the whole country) to 21st cenury standards by now....Chad's neighbor Sudan whom has done wonders developing Khartoum and it's suburbs via it's oil wealth should be a nice blueprint for Chad to follow.
