I used the get Eidees before but now I have to give some. Back in Ottawa we used to go house to house on Eid. We have a large Muslim Bengali commmunity in Ottawa. All day we would go over to their houses and they would come over to ours. Eid prayer was always fun. It was funny because girls would heavilly dress up to go to the prayers and my friends and I would always enjoy that. I don't feel EID as much here in the States. Eid in Bangladesh is simply fabulous.

Best thing about Eid: food.
Worst thing about Eid: overeating.

Unfortunately Eid in a medium sized American town has little of the appeal that Eid in Bangladesh does. For one thing Eid will often fall on a weekday (luckily not this time :)), and people cannot always take time off from work. There is not a festive atmosphere since most people are not Muslims. One's relatives usually live elsewhere. Even going to the main mosque here is not a pleasant experience...we have a hardline Egyptian cleric who spends his sermon scolding people and has deputies who are looking to see who is wearing what and other nonsense. But we do the best we can...people dress up and if they have the day off, go from house to house eating the usual goodies. We generally have a party for all Bangladeshis at a community center the weedend after Eid or thereabouts.

I have many fond Eid memories growing up in BD with all my relatives there...the experience there is very different.

^^ There are specific instructions for women as to how they should dress in the Koran (Also in the Hadith). If anyone prescribe dress codes that are not supported by Koran or Hadith, ONLY then it may be considered as “nonsense”.

Just adding my 2cents!:)

I am very much aware what is stated in scripture...my comment was made with that knowledge. This isn't the place to elaborate on what I was referring to by "nonsense"...but it didn't just pertain to clothing. I didn't want to turn this thread into a controversial one. I was just stating my personal Eid experience here. There are actually one or two other mosques in my town and I would much rather go to those since I don't like the imam at the main mosque. However most of the Bangladeshis we know here end up going there (out of habit) and so my family ends up there as well and me with them :)

I am visiting Orlando this Eid. I know of 4 different places in Orlando where Eid salah is being held. We'll be having the traditional Eid food - Shemai, Halwa, Korma, Kalia, Polao (or Biryani or Khichuri). I'm not sure if you guys are familiar with one item my mom used to make every Eid - Khurma soaked over night in milk (don't laugh).

Ofcourse we'll get together with some friends and family.

I'll say my Eid prayers at Gulshan Central Mosque and meet my buddies afternoon/evening. I hope to go to Rangpur to attend my closest buddy's marriage ceremony there on 16th.
Didnt ve to buy anything for myself, coz I got quite enough for this eid as gifts!

Eid Mubarak to all!:dance2:

n.b.: Mod, can we 've this thread's name changed to something like "EID MUBARAK!!!", coz Eid is close enough and we could avoid increasing number of similar threads.

when is Eid? Tomorrow or Saturday?

For us in SC it's Saturday.

when is Eid? Tomorrow or Saturday?

Depends on whom you ask. For us in Ann Arbor, it is Friday, while in Bloomfield Hills (35 miles from AA) and further east, Eid shall be on Saturday.

I long to spend an Eid in Dhaka. The last Eid prayer I said in outer stadium was in my teen years. I used to nag and nag my father until he would agree to take us to say our Eid prayers either at Baitul Mukkaram or Paltan Maidan.

Like Tan (I'm sorry if you hate folks abbreviating your name) put it, Eid isn't the same here in the US, especially in an average sized neighborhood. Even though there is a strong muslim community in and around Ann Arbor, I, being the typical person from Bangladesh, do not hang out with that crowd. When Eid falls on a weekday, we just go for the prayers in the morning and go to work. My sister invariably has a party that weekend. This year she is having a big bash. That's Eid for me, in Ann Arbor.

^^ No problem with the abbreviation obviously that's just a made up name anyway (real name is Tanvir...mentioned it in the "Introduce Yourself" thread earlier). The final verdict here in SC is that Eid will be both Friday AND Saturday (:)). The main mosque follows Saudi Arabia...they have Eid whichever day the Saudis do...and are having it on Friday. My family has decided to go to a different mosque this time and they are holding prayers on Saturday (which, if you base on the lunar phases on the calendar, is probably more right...not that I lose any sleep over such details). Having Eid on a weekend will be a very pleasant change for those of us in the US. There is a party for Bangladeshis at night.

^^ Oh well I take back all I just wrote. The resolve of the Bangladeshis planning to do Eid on Saturday in Columbia, SC has crumbled, and now pretty much everyone wants to do Eid on Friday. So (a little early) Eid Mubarak to all!

Like every year, this year I will go to three big family parties,on the first two days of Eid.The third day as usual is reserved for friends, might as well go somewhere outside the city with them. Before the Eid holidays are over,I will also be heading to Coxsbazar and Chittagong with family. Today is friday in Dhaka, and Eid is probably tomorrow.I plan on spending the whole day shopping, always liked the last-minute rush. Will be going out in an hour from now...anyways,Eid Mubarak to all!

Eid Mubarak everybody, for it is Eid in Ann Arbor, today.

We have the same problem here like you do, Tanvir. The Ann Arbor mosque follows Saudi Arabia wheres the other big mosque run mostly by Pakistanis, decide the religious events ahead of time, in beginning of the year (which calendar, I do not know), moon sighting notwithstanding. So, they shall celebrate Eid, tomorrow, Saturday.
