What is the situation with boating in the south docks? How much does it cost? Do you need to buy your own boat or can you rent a boat? How far can you sail - can you sail through all the Docks or only some of them? Are you allowed to go into Albert Dock? What kind of boats are there - the boats in the marina look like they are all sea-going, are there any craft that are just suitable for the docks but not the river? Will such craft be able to go up to Stanley Dock and how long will that take?

I think I'd like a rowing boat, and just row around the docks.

^^ Good grief that looks like hard work

I was just thinking that it would be nice to sit in a boat and listen to music on a sunny afternoon - nothing strenuous. A bit like going for a stroll in the park, but on the docks. I saw a youtube video taken from a yellow duck craft and the docks looked so much grander from that level than from land.

I would like to see houseboats in the docks, like the ones in Cheyne Walk, Chelsea:

If this happened, you could also live the bohemian lifestyle by living on a houseboat or a canal boat:

A tiny bit of info here, but not enough.

Just been watching a great edition of Grand Designs and was thinking of similar things. For such a mighty seafaring tradition we seemed to let so much go. Where are the masses of house boats, bespoke boat builders and fancy yatcht yards?

it certainly was. Would be good if that type of living was a real option in the city-region though. :)

Dang right.

There's people on house boats slap bang in the middle of Bristol, great location and they add to the feel of th eplace.

We have huge expanses of water which are currently underutilised. I would love to see expansion of the current marina or have a second in Central docks, areas where houseboats could moor and houses around the concept proposed in Princes Dock.

Not sure about the possibility of having moorings in the river but that would be a welcome addition as in Bristol, London, Paris etc. (as long as they dont look like the floating scrapheap Tony Sebo was referring to):ohno:

New developments could easily include a marina, like this one in Chelsea Harbour. The problem with Chelsea Harbour though, is that it is sterile and soulless. It would be greatly improved by a few rusty old ships with a few characters living on them.

This is a mistake that somewhere like Liverpool Waters needs to avoid.

Compare it with these boats just down the river from it:

The rusty old boats are next to some of the best addresses in Chelsea - while Chelsea Harbour is out of the way and was built next to an old power station. The point being that rusty old ships are nothing to be snobby about.

There's all the difference in the world between an old salt living aboard a yacht or narrowboat and an American-style floating prefab cube of a houseboat. The latter are fine on rural lakes and anything but fine in urban settings.

I'm not sure what the best solution is but appearances matter a lot and you want the live-aboard vessels to look like boats rather than houses and to be in good general shape or at least of old and traditional appearance. You also want variety rather than uniformity.

Perhaps a solution is to require that live-aboard vessels be either sea-worthy or of traditional (pre-1960) design and subject to inspection for compliance. What we really want is those old salts adding character to the locality.

I'm not specifying anything. Merely making an observation that the water spaces are substantial and largely underutilised at present. I am far from expert in nautical matters.

Whatever is best for each individual setting.

Maybe we should pay more attention to what the bloody Dutch are doing? :)

Brentford to Little Venice in 3 Minutes

This video shows canal boats / houseboats on the The Grand Union Canal in West London - this could be how the Leeds - Liverpool canal could look in a couple of years time.

I thought it would be a nice idea to put the Uboat on legs just above the water line in one of the docks, then that war ship there considering something to do with maritime history perhaps even raise the titanic! *rofl*
No doubt when the canal link is finnished they may look into providing an area for the barges in one of the docks, that would be a good investment idea because, I beleive its not cheap to moor up a barge for any considerable time.

I've got nothing against the new Liverpool Marina, but I get far more pleasure looking at those old boats - nice work GED.
