Heading east brings us into the hood known as South Beach. It goes from Seaview Ave to Hylan Blvd between Quintard St, with Mason Ave and The Narrows with Sand La. This hood is mostly residential. Originally, it was settled in the 1600's by both English, French, and Dutch farmers and fisherman. For much of the 1700's and 1800's this area remained pretty much rural and was villagelike. In the 1880's, the B&O RR had built the SIRT and made this one part of the South Beach Branch. In the early 1900's, there were a number of Italian immigrants that came to live here as the the area was nicknamed Bungalowtown for the number of bungalows that were here. In 1953, the MTA had ended the run of the South Beach Branch and removed its tracks. Many of the amusement parks and arcades that stood here where demolished by the 1970's. Around the 1980's, housing had taken over were the SIRT once ran. Besides the boardwalk, there isn't too much to see in South Beach. Much of the southernmost corner is occupied by the South Beach Psychiatric Ctr and Staten Island University Hospital. You can get here by taking the S51, S52, S81, and X20 buses.
