Heading south brings us into the hood known as New Dorp. It goes from Tysens La to Locust Ave between Richmond Rd, with Amboy Rd, and Hylan Blvd. This hood is both residential and commercial. Originally, this land was home to the Raritan Indians until it was discovered by the Dutch in the early 1600's. It was first settled by the Dutch in 1671 and was known as Nieuwe Dorp, which meant New Town. Durring the American Revolution, New Dorp had prospered greatly as it the Vanderbuilt family had numerous businesses here. Around 1860, the SIRT had placed a station here to connect it with the rest of the island. New Dorp has seen a lot of developement in the early 1900's. More developement had followed since the 1960's after the Verazanno-Narrows Br was built. For those who don't know, New Dorp is the only hood in Staten Island to actually have numbered streets. They go from 1-10, though 5th/6th Sts are skipped for New Dorp Plaza, and the reason is mainly b/c the hills that run in parts of Staten Island makes it difficult to have such a system. You can get here by taking the SIR to the New Dorp Station. Here is what you will find in New Dorp.
