Got a hurricane story? Pinellas County wants to hear it
Wednesday, October 10, 2007
CLEARWATER (Bay News 9) -- Anyone who has lived through a hurricane has a story to tell.
Now, Pinellas County's Emergency Management team wants to hear those stories.
The Emergency Operations Center in Clearwater is sponsoring "Project Storm Story,'' giving residents an opportunity to tell their experiences in dealing with hurricanes in the hopes of helping others.
"Somebody says I was holding a mattress over my head when Andrew ripped everything apart in my house,'' said Tom Iovino, Pinellas County's Communications Specialist. "That's what we want to capture, that's what we want to grab."
Surprisingly, many of the submissions involve storms from many years ago.
Maggie Hall remembers Hurricane Flora pounding Cuba in October 1963.
"I remember the storm very vividly because I was under my aunt's bed on the red floor, kinda looking up at the slats on the door and seeing this black sky," said Hall, who was five at the time. "One of the things that we really need to do is prepare our kids, to let them know we are going to take care of them."
Pinellas County management officials said they may use the survival stories in pamphlets or educational videos. Pinellas may encourage other counties to launch similar programs.
