Mo Rush October 10th, 2007, 11:54 PM 2010 FIFA World Cup Match Venue
At night it will appear as if the additional tiers of seating are hovering above the existing stadium bowl.
A roof will be added above the floating tiers.

Benn October 11th, 2007, 02:29 AM Thats pretty weird, you'd think there would be a more elegant solution.
Benjuk October 11th, 2007, 05:28 AM Hey Mo, outstanding set of posts (I'll not bother responding to each). Some amazing venues on the way, once again my mouth is watering for my 2010 vacation!
I absolutely love the 'floating' seats (above), I know cover is required, and being added, but I think that will damage the illusion - I'd like to see them leave it off that part of the ground!
Jim856796 October 11th, 2007, 07:14 AM the floating tiers are tacky and can be an eyesore to look at.
Mo Rush October 11th, 2007, 08:44 AM the floating tiers are tacky and can be an eyesore to look at.
sometimes architecture is a matter of opinion.
To have an 8000 capacity additional tier only supported by what looks like steel trusses is pretty cool. I can imagine the temporary seating used for the London 2012 Olympic stadium would not be too different except it would actually be temporary. With this stadiumwe're talking concrete tiers in mid-air. Not elegant at all..but then again its prob not meant to be.

Kuvvaci October 11th, 2007, 12:27 PM this is a vry ugly stadium. I wish they would built a new one instead.
Durbsboi October 11th, 2007, 12:30 PM uh the pictures of the Mmabatho Stadium got nothing to do with the 2010 Bafokeng Stadium, just showing the ppl that we got another stadium with similar type of seating arrangements.
Kuvvaci October 11th, 2007, 12:31 PM ohh, situation is worse than...
copying another ugly stadium is a big mistake.
Durbsboi October 11th, 2007, 12:48 PM I dont think its ugly, I think its quite a bold design & moves away from the standard bland bowl. There will be a roof over the stands, so no worries about people getting over tanned or wet.
Mo I think we need to start a poll, take peoples views on whether the design is ugly or good, most of us in the SA threads tend to like it, lets see what the international audience seem to think.
Benn October 12th, 2007, 04:41 AM Floating tiers can be beautiful, I love the end stands at the Stade Gerland in Lyon (the sidelines are really boring and don't fit cohesively at all, but the end stands are amazing), or the San Nicola in Bari, those are very elegant, but this just seems to be thrown on with out much thought of it in context to the greater design. I don't know where to start with the Mmabatho Stadium, its unique, but in my opinion ugly as sin, and the sightlines are crap.
Dreamlıneя October 15th, 2007, 02:34 AM Woo.. That Mmabatho Stadium is the Weirdest and ugliest stadium Ever...
Mo Rush November 2nd, 2007, 02:43 AM Behind schedule
The smallest of the world cup stadium upgrade projects is behind. Its quite funny. They need to spend about R30 million over 13 months when Cape Town is spending about R100 million every month.

Construction of North West 2010 stadium delayed
November 01, 2007, 06:15
As preparations for the 2010 FIFA World Cup are underway countrywide, contractors at the Rustenburg's Royal Bafokeng stadium in the North West acknowledge that they are behind schedule. Construction work has not started at the stadium.
They are faced with a shortage of skilled manpower, as well as pressing deadlines. Contractors say the delay in the appointment of a community liaison officer for this project is cause for concern. But they are confident that the stadium will be ready by December 2008.
Work to renovate the Rustenburg's Royal Bafokeng stadium and bring it up to the FIFA required standards was scheduled to start two months ago.
Contractors are blaming the delays on contracts and paper work that has not yet been finalised.
Skills shortage
"What we are trying to do is to identify the areas that we have skills shortages in and try to train people as quickly as we can, giving them crash courses and apprenticeships,” said contracts manager Trevor Dillon.
"So the real work has not started yet, we've got a lot of work to do, it is a very tight programme, we have got basically 13 months in order to complete over R20 million worth of work,” he said.
Local authorities have expressed concern over the delays, and are trying to assist where possible.
Kebareng Bogopane of the Rustenburg LocaL municipality says: "We are applying more pressure and we are supervising them. We visit them on a daily basis to make sure of the progress that is taking place here at Phokeng.
Chairperson of the Sports Portfolio Committee, Backos Mahlangu, says: "What we need is to make sure that the employers address the needs of the people, they don't just take people and exploit them, but also the workers they must make sure they don't make unreasonable demands because they know that this 2010".
On completion of the project, the current stadium capacity of 39 000 will be increased to 45 000.

skaP187 November 18th, 2007, 12:46 AM Am I saying something very strange when I say I like this stadium as it is?
The colour of the seats. The blue sky, the green grass... Feels like Jamaica!
Seriously, it has a nice ambiance.
Just dig the atletictrack out... Throw a little ´Stade de France´ system in, keep it round and there you have a nice 40 000 seat stadium.

The Stade de France system costs money. But it is a good point since a rugby team and soccer team will now use this stadium as their home venue.

Wezza October 20th, 2008, 01:04 PM Did the goverment run out of money after funding all the other stadiums? ;)
JohanSA October 20th, 2008, 01:28 PM Well it was an existing stadium thats getting a very minor upgrade ( a few 100 million ) to comply with Fifa standerds . We're not going through a recession ( growth estimated between 3.5% and 5% for this year and next year ) nor are our banks anywhere close to bankrupt and the government still has R10 billion in reserve money for 2010 and that R40 billion it decided not to spend this year because Minister Trevor Manual saw these bad times coming ( mentioned in budget speech in the beginning of the year ).
Wezza October 20th, 2008, 01:29 PM It's just a huge letdown this stadium when you look at all of the others, which are impressive to say the least.
JohanSA October 20th, 2008, 02:34 PM Well .... Greenpoint Cape Town , Soccercity Johannesburg , Moses Mabhida Durban = Spectacular Iconic. Nelson Mandela Port Elizabeth , Mbombela Nelspruit = Impressive . Bloemfontein stadium , Peter Mokaba Polokwane , Coca Cola Park Johannesburg = Good but a lil bit average . Loftus Pretoria ( Tshwane ) , Royal Bafokeng Rustenberg = average and bland.
Ill say that thats a good mix with the worst stadium defenately this one because of the running track allthough Durbans stadium also has one.
Mo Rush October 20th, 2008, 06:22 PM Did the goverment run out of money after funding all the other stadiums? ;)
No, unlike London that settles for bland our cities went through a rigorous process in terms of funding. Government only allocated funds it thought was needed based on what city's presented. It becomes more complex because government also selected the stadiums to be used for the FIFA World Cup.
In fact, Green Point was given the go ahead by government along with funds and not the city.
Many cities reviewed the design and carried out value engineering to reduce costs and only upon sufficient proof that funds are needed does gvt increase the allocation of funds. (usually when Cape Town moans the other host cities come on board).
Mr.Underground March 1st, 2009, 01:55 PM This thread also can be moved in "complete section".
I want to say a logistic thing about this stadium. It is too difficult for foreign fans to reach, seeing by google earth. Too far from turistic route and from biggest cities (except Johannesburg). :ohno:

This one, from my point view, is the only stadium not for a WC. Other 9 stadiums are well for a WC, but this one no.

Nah. Just luck of the draw.
Still pisses me off that, for the scond World Cup running, England will play most of their matches at the lesser stadiums.
By contrast, the Dutch get three games at the three biggest stadiums.
Bad planning by FIFA.
Luke80 June 9th, 2010, 07:24 PM ^^ Oh. I was afraid someone would correct me on that.

I think it's just bad planning.
Even South Africa have to play two of their group games at relatively small stadiums - Loftus Versfield and Bloemfontein - in addition to Soccer City. Surely the home team should be playing games at Durban and Cape Town? Not just because of the bigger capacity but also because that would mean an equitable geographical spread for their games. By playing one game in Jo'burg and one in Pretoria, it means that SA's games are concentrated in a relatively small area, rather than being spread around the country.
And FIFA predetermined that SA would be in Group A before they made the draw. So no excuses.
Back to the issue of capacity, some teams, like New Zealand, won't get any games at the bigger stadiums.
So it's even more of a nonsense that the Dutch will get one group game at each of the big three stadiums, followed by a likely round of 16 game at Durban again.

IHaveNoLegs June 14th, 2010, 07:44 AM Attendence was 38,646 according to FIFA, the BBC had better get their facts right. This probably is the worst stadium for this world cup but that is almost entirely due to the athletics track around the field.

It's a forum about stadiums. It doesn't have to be all sunshine and lollipops. The other 9 stadiums are excellent but if you actually read you'll see there are plenty of people here who agree with me that bafokeng isn't up to snuff.. The rest of the stadiums are excellent and that's part of the reason this one stands out.
afonso_bh June 14th, 2010, 07:12 PM Royal is an excellent stadium. The atmosphere is great (mostly at afternoon).
Mo Rush June 14th, 2010, 07:20 PM Love or hate the venue

2. Renovations for FIFA compliance were funded by the community

The only "home viewers" you should be concerned about are IOC members who are watching these events and noting the distracting vuvuzela noise and the attendance figures.

It was unimpressive since the stadium only holds that many people. Over 20 million people watched that game in the UK alone and it was sited in a stadium fit for high school football games. THAT'S the point.

You obviously have not seen FIFA requirements for WC venues.
The design is not glamorous. It seats 45,000 only BUT
the world cup draw is not based on picking larger venues for more high profile matches. It doesnt work that way.

then they either need to change that system or burden the host countries with building every stadium to similar size. ( I think FIFA needs to change that system to maximize gate revenue for the host )

Go back and read your own post. You dissed "attendance" rather than capacity. That's why you touched a nerve. Nobody disagrees that the stadium is small. If that's what you meant then that's what you should have written in the first place.

38,646 in a stadium with a capacity of 45,000 for a game with a huge global audience. I rest my case. But if you think it was the greatest attendance story of all time, enjoy yourself.

yup and my last point also mentioned that I agree with you on the size of the stadium if you actually read it. The stadium is small and dinky. I don't disagree. that's not the point.
The fact there was 150,000 ticket requests and all of the tickets sold seems to be lost on you. Some of the tickets went unused while 110,000 others who wanted tickets weren't able to get them. That's a FIFA problem, not a lack of interest in attending.

Your high school can pack more people in than it's capacity is supposed to hold. That's dangerous.
This game sold out, but for whatever reason, the crowd was not allowed to be the 45,000 capacity. Perhaps this capacity is quoted as after the WC. Who knows.
But I agree the stadium was totally inadequate for the game it was hosting. We all agree with that.

yes is a joke, also thousands of mexican fans couldnd get tickets because the game is also in this venue. FIFA should do something about games location.
Because, the Brasil, England, Mexico, Argentina, the home team, or some other popular team, should be at the bigger stadiums.

Why do you keep bringing up BMO Field? Besides the fact we have 40-60 thousand seat stadiums across the country that has nothing to do with this topic. Besides, you're Jamaican! Your team is just as bad as ours and your stadiums even worse.

Pule June 15th, 2010, 05:33 AM FIFA is sh!t organization, thinking of a large number of people who couldn't get ticktes to the games and seeing empty seats makes me sick. Such a large company had people standing in queues for more than 8 hours while their system is down. My colleagues decided to quit after several attempts of purchasing tickets failed. Even here on SSC guys were complaining about the system being down and not getting tickets.
miguelon June 15th, 2010, 08:19 AM is so obvious to use the larger venues, for your big events. Shame on FIFA with this policy that is taking revenue from the host country.
Its like if Wimbledon decides to put Federer or Nadal at court 12 with a few hundred seats, and let the 50th ranked player vs the 35th play at Centre Court.
Or if UEFA puts the Champions League final on a 20,000 stadium.
This is a case for....

Not really, not with the way the bracket lined up, given the chance to make up for 2006. We have won at this stage before and there was something of an expectation that they would make the quarterfinals given the draw. And if it weren't for tactical incompotence they would have.
Also the majority of the roster plays in Europe, so the relative strength of the MLS seems like kind of a non issue (also they might be a top 16 league these days).

It probably isn't, but many of our best footballers play for European clubs.
Sure, Bradley's scored some big victories but has also*made some questionable tactical and personnel decisions that could have potentially cost us matches in some cases and embarrasingly lost them in some others.
