Jim856796 November 4th, 2007, 03:32 AM The stadium will be constructed next to the existing Peter Mokaba stadium, which is to be demolished once the new stadium opens.
NeilF November 4th, 2007, 05:04 AM Nice stadium. In the first render, the corners of the upper tier are partially filled in but in the second one, there is no closing of the corners at all - I take it that the second render is for the 'legacy mode' design? Do you know what the capacity will be following the removal of the corner seating? Personally, I think it actually looks a lot better with the fully open corners.
Mo Rush November 4th, 2007, 11:09 AM The existing stadium will definitely not be demolished, not sure where you got that info. It produces an income stream of R70 million a year and the city is not demolishing it or building over it for exactly that reason. Just like Sydney 2000 doesnt have an elevate mono-rail at its olympic park jim.
Mo Rush November 4th, 2007, 11:11 AM The design has been scaled back quite a bit I believe. Only one main roof will be built over grand stand.
Jim856796 November 7th, 2007, 07:33 AM ^^So, the existing stadium should serve as a training venue?
Mo Rush November 7th, 2007, 05:16 PM ^^So, the existing stadium should serve as a training venue?
perhaps but there are other proposals...they are listed in the 2010FIFAWC Training venues thread.

Polokwane
THE vicinity of the Peter Mokaba stadium, to
the south of the city centre, has been a hive
of activity since the start of the year and this
week the city’s 2010 directorate reported that
the construction programme remained on
track.
“The stadium is 15% completed,” said Frik
van der Merwe, the city’s sports manager.
“There is obviously still plenty of work to
be done, but we are happy with the progress
so far.”
With 675 workers on site, the 42 0 0 0 - s e at
stadium is emerging from the earth and
taking shape. Raw materials for the steel and
cement have been secured, and the steel
required for the roof structure is being
manufactured.
Bulk services such as water, electricity and
sewerage are being installed.
Telkom representatives are planning the
laying of communications cables, and work
on the development of a full disastermanagement
plan is well advanced.
Meanwhile, the project to upgrade the
access roads around the stadium is well
under way, and consultants have been
appointed to develop an integrated transport
and traffic-management plan to cope with the
influx of soccer supporters in 2010.
Wezza December 3rd, 2007, 10:26 PM That's disappointing about the roof. Looked way better with the old design. Why did they do that? To cut back construction time?

Angh December 4th, 2007, 07:38 AM Ai, that sucks a bit that the roof will only cover one stand, but I'm sure an open type of stadium would suite the area better. I've also noticed that the capacity of the stadium has been reduced from 46,000 to 42,000... what's up with that???
skaP187 December 6th, 2007, 06:34 PM I like it better without the roof.
Lydon December 6th, 2007, 06:35 PM Same lol
skaP187 December 6th, 2007, 06:44 PM I like roofs for the shade instead of the rain if you know what I mean...

lpioe January 2nd, 2008, 10:51 PM Shame about the roof, I don't like stadia that have a roof on just one side.
I'd rather see it with no roof at all.
Apart from that I think it's a very nice stadium.
Goothrey January 3rd, 2008, 12:50 AM I dont like roofs altogether. Good interior though.
www.sercan.de January 3rd, 2008, 12:57 AM We wana have roofs above all stands :D
But great stands IMO
michał_ January 3rd, 2008, 02:30 PM Mo- so there is no roof now. But does this solution leave the chance to install the roof later on if an upgrade is to take place?

"The design is also noteworthy for its versatile simplicity: using a modular concept to achieve repetition of structural elements, construction time and cost have been saved. In addition to the four identical ‘baobab’ structures, the lower tiers of all the stands as well as the upper tiers are virtually identical. The stands consist of reinforced concrete frames spaced at an average distance of 7,5m around the perimeter. These frames have raked concrete beams on the seating side to support the precast concrete seating elements. The same modular principle is evident in the roof structure. This has made it possible to proceed, without having to wait for full project funding, with the construction of the 8 300m² roof over the western stand in accordance with FIFA requirements. As additional funds become available, the design has made provision for the other stands to be easily roofed over. "

Mo Rush April 9th, 2009, 11:43 AM still can't believe this stadium isn't getting a 2nd round game :ohno:
1. Its the host city not the stadium i.e. Polokwane
2. Other venues are larger
3. Danny Jordaan is not from Polokwane.
haggiesm April 9th, 2009, 12:31 PM he's not from Pta either. i understand the host city argument, but then major host cities should invest more. not to beat a dead horse or cry over spilt (or any other cliches) but pretoria is seriously under investing.

Not much of an update, since I can't get on site, and most of the roads around the stadium are closed... So, only three pics. Looking really good. :) As you guys can see, they started with the roof covering. They're also painting the opposing stand (not in the photos, couldn't get a good shot). It's quite a nice colour, rust-orange. Fits in great with the surroundings.
Anyway, the pics. ;)

POLOKWANE - Skotela Rmaahlama, newly appointed stadium manager at the municipality, said the first soccer matches will be played at the Peter Mokaba Sports Complex in February 2010.
Construction at the stadium is well under way, even though a rescheduled handover date was set for September instead of June, as planned.
Rmaahlama said the process of installing seats will start in the next two weeks.
The field is currently being prepared and special underground irrigation system laid.
Plans for the utilisation of the stadium after 2010 are already in place.
Following a tender process, a company will be appointed to manage, maintain and operate the stadium.
The maintenance of the stadium alone is calculated at R10 million per year.
More features of the stadium include:
• Two VVIP and 26 VIP sections;
• access for disabled persons with special facilities;
• sufficient ablution facilities at each stand;
• the media will be accommodated in two venues and broadband transmission will be in place for transmission of information.
Electricity will soon be available, while work has already started on the building of parking areas for buses and vehicles to be allowed in the precinct.
The drive-through facilities for buses and taxis are practical for pick-up or drop-off.

Polokwane Rugby Stadium? Who's actually going to play there, since Limpopo Province is represented in the Currie Cup by the Blue Bulls? Are they going to have a Vodacom Cup team?
trmather July 19th, 2009, 02:37 PM It's weird, I might be alone in thinking this, but are the smaller venues more impressive than the bigger ones?
Mo Rush July 19th, 2009, 04:28 PM This venue costs $130 million. Absolute bargain. The city is currently reviewing various options with potential private operators, to ensure that venue has good community use lik the old Peter Mokaba stadium adjacent to it and hosts other events to keep the venue well maintained.

the only downside on this one, is the color of the seats, lets wait until they are completly installed so give the final judgment.

Now in summer it's quite hot there, isn't it?
miguelon February 9th, 2010, 09:11 PM Nice stadium, lots of premiership teams would like a facility like this.
hope we can kick some uruguayan butt during the world cup
Pule March 31st, 2010, 04:27 AM Thanks to African Biohazard, I will be attending Argentina vs Greece game here on the 22nd June.

Huskies May 21st, 2010, 10:20 PM a full roof would ruin this one
haggiesm May 23rd, 2010, 12:50 PM totally agree. for it's setting, it's perfect.

DenilsonUK June 4th, 2010, 11:04 PM I love everything about this stadium; the lack of roof, the seat design, the incorporation of the Baobab Tree design, just everything.
I can't believe the Royal Bafokeng Stadium has got a Round of 16 game yet this beauty hasn't.
parcdesprinces June 4th, 2010, 11:21 PM I love everything about this stadium; the lack of roof, the seat design, the incorporation of the Baobab Tree design, just everything.
I have to agree, except about the roof ! IMHO, they could have add a roof over the second grandstand (with the same design as the existing roof)...

I agree. Bafokeng is the worst venue in the tournament by far. It shouldn't even be included in the tournament at all.
Trelawny June 6th, 2010, 03:56 AM I agree. Bafokeng is the worst venue in the tournament by far. It shouldn't even be included in the tournament at all.
It's better than 20 000 national stadium of Canada.:lol::lol:
DenilsonUK June 6th, 2010, 05:06 PM Err, what has that got to do with it?
All he's saying is that he thinks the Royal Bafokeng Stadium is the worst stadium in the tourament...
JYDA June 6th, 2010, 08:59 PM It's better than 20 000 national stadium of Canada. :lol::lol::lol:
Not that it has anything to do with this but we have much bigger, better stadiums than that.
Anyway, the point is that for a World Cup the Bafokeng just isn't good enough. With the massive number of traveling fans from the USA and England I find it unfortunate that their opening match is going to be in the worst stadium in the tournament. For the extra venue they should've used Newlands in Cape Town.
Steel City Suburb June 6th, 2010, 10:25 PM Nice!
Although the hospitality suite looks like you will have to breathe in!

It's the stupid restrictions on how many stadiums in which cities can host.
Nobody could convince me that the organizing committee wouldn't prefer to use Orlando or Newlands if they could.

Did you not see the confederations cup last year? This stadium is perfect. Grass, Atmosphere, clean!! The stadium is good. :bash:

Well on second thought you`re right. What was I thinking. It is perfect. It`s so hard to find stadiums these days that have grass and are clean.
The fact is it`s a track stadium and a mediocre one to anyone that doesn`t have standards as low as yours.
Luke80 June 8th, 2010, 12:29 PM The fact is it`s a track stadium and a mediocre one to anyone that doesn`t have standards as low as yours.
Oh FFS! Why are England ALWAYS put in the track stadiums? Even watching on TV it'll look naff...
haggiesm June 8th, 2010, 05:57 PM how is a stadium with a track new?????
haggiesm June 8th, 2010, 05:58 PM just to clarify, newlands would've been a logistical nightmare because of it's location and only one city is allowed to have two hosting stadiums anyway and johannesburg already has that.
ZABoy June 9th, 2010, 09:31 AM just to clarify, newlands would've been a logistical nightmare because of it's location and only one city is allowed to have two hosting stadiums anyway and johannesburg already has that.
thank God that tehy didnt choose Newlands Stadium. When Stormers play there one just cannot drive through Newlands. I don even think there is space to widen the roads there
KingmanIII June 9th, 2010, 05:57 PM Oh FFS! Why are England ALWAYS put in the track stadiums? Even watching on TV it'll look naff...
We have to play at all the old stadiums ourselves (we'll likely end up at Free State in knockouts).

Like I said, I knew about the 'only-one-city-can-host-at-two-stadiums' rule and I think it's downright stupid.
Didn't know Newlands was such a logistics nightmare though. Scratch them then.
Even still, couldn't they have counted Jo'burg and Soweto as separate cities, with Soweto hosting at two stadiums?
It's a shame that Orlando Stadium, one of the most beautiful new venues in SA, will sit dormant while places like Rustenburg and Bloemfontein will host knockouts.
Oh well, at least it'll host the concert.
JimB June 9th, 2010, 08:34 PM I like this stadium.
Doesn't look like much from the outside but it looks good inside - and that's what really matters.
I quite like the fact that there's only a roof on one side. I imagine that a roof isn't really necessary in Polokwane and the lack of symmetry adds to the character.
As others have said, a much better stadium than Royal Bafokeng.

haggiesm June 10th, 2010, 02:40 PM i don't understand why people insist on sitting in the shade during winter. in CT, yes, but not here where the sun shine is perfectly pleasant during the day.

It's a shame (is it the WC or not ????) !
IronMan89 June 13th, 2010, 07:45 PM It's not that bad... I think it's pretty good! I think 100,000 tickets were on sale at the start of the competition so starting 2nd round no tickets will be available, it's normal that such games as Slovenia vs Algeria , Honduras-Chile etc have 8,000 to 12,000 seats empty
Quintana June 13th, 2010, 07:55 PM I certainly wouldn't pay to see Algeria and Slovenia play either.
Trelawny June 13th, 2010, 08:52 PM I wouldn't either after that horrible match. 30 thousand not that bad.
Plus the stadium holds 45 thousand or so and Fifa never allows every seat to be full.
parcdesprinces June 13th, 2010, 09:07 PM It's not that bad...
Yes it is !!! Each time the World Cup goes to "exotic" places, that happens.... Do you remember of any empty seat during Germany 2006 or France '98, whatever the game ???? 'Cause I don't (and even during USA '94) !
SkyLerm June 13th, 2010, 09:21 PM USA '94 was the only WC with all stadia filled-up every match.

raynsity June 15th, 2010, 04:00 AM did see how the ball bounced on the pitch? it was so high that the players couldn't even control the ball, just like how the goalkeeper couldn't catch the ball.
The next match in this stadium would be France vs Mexico and maybe we're gonna see another boring match.
