Its just down the street, but this is great news for the city of LA. Not only that, it will be on top of a subway station!

The entertainment giant will announce plans Thursday to leave its home of more than 50 years for new headquarters near Universal Studios.
By Meg James and Matea Gold, Los Angeles Times Staff Writers

After more than a half-century, NBC Universal is dropping the curtain on "beautiful downtown Burbank."

The media company plans to announce Thursday that it is selling much of the 30 acres it owns in Burbank, including its legendary NBC Studios at 3000 W. Alameda Ave., home to such iconic programs as "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" and before that, "The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson."

NBC Universal intends to relocate the network and local news operations that are in Burbank to a new headquarters in a massive complex planned on Lankershim Boulevard, across the street from its Universal Studios entertainment complex. An MTA Red Line subway station and a sprawling surface parking lot now occupy the proposed site, which is next to the 101 Freeway. NBC Universal expects to move into the new center in 2011.

Separately, NBC Universal confirmed that "The Tonight Show" is remaining in Los Angeles when Conan O'Brien takes over the show from Leno in 2009. With the Burbank facility on the block, the network is expanding and upgrading Studio One, a sound stage on the Universal Studios lot that was built in 1961 for the "Jack Benny Show," to be the new home of the late-night program. Other memorable productions, including "Jurrasic Park" and "The Incredible Hulk," as well as the 1980s television show "Knight Rider" were also shot there.

NBC Universal three years ago made the controversial decision to give O'Brien the legendary 11:35 p.m. time slot. That move effectively set a retirement date for Leno, who continues to be one of the network's most popular and bankable stars.

"This is very disappointing," said Mary Alvord, Burbank's city manager. "Everybody likes to have visible shows like 'The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.' They are a big part of who we are. And Jay has been more than a host -- he's been an accessible member of our community. It's a sad day for Burbank."

NBC has ambitious plans for its new digs, which it has dubbed the West Coast News Headquarters and Content Center. The company intends to be the anchor tenant of a massive project, more than 1 million square feet, being proposed to the city of Los Angeles by Thomas Properties, NBC Universal's developer for the project.

The new building is expected to have a street-side studio modeled after the "Today" show set in New York, as well as state-of-the-art production facilities that will allow the company's news organizations to more easily share content, executives said.

"I think this is a real pronouncement of a serious commitment on the company's part to news and information going forward," said Steve Capus, president of NBC News, adding that the new Universal City headquarters would provide a "central nervous system."

"It's really about being greater than the individual parts," he added. Even though the various newsrooms currently share the same facility in Burbank, "right now we're kind of a completely disconnected organization, because the technical spines around our organizations are built on different platforms."

While the behind-the-scenes changes may not be immediately evident to viewers, Capus said, "it will be great to finally be able to honestly say when we throw to someone in Los Angeles, 'We're standing in the city of Los Angeles.' "

The consolidation of NBC Universal's West Coast news divisions comes as the company is set to unveil a similar project in New York today -- a combined newsroom and production facility in its Rockefeller Center headquarters that will now house not only NBC News and WNBC, but MSNBC, which is leaving its New Jersey facility.

"In New York, we have all of our news entities on a common platform and it allows you to share media," said John Wallace, president of NBC's owned-and-operated television stations. "That's a tremendous advantage we don't have in Burbank, largely because the building was constructed 50 years ago."

this is huge news! i wish they moved to Hollywood Blvd, but hey this aint bad either. another destination added to the metro. see how rail is transforming LA. good to hear Conan will be from LA and that there will be a studio. i bet they will figure a way to add retail between citywalk and the metro to draw people to both.

I like the fact that they're building by the Metro, however, it sounds like they're planning to build right on top of the station's parking lot. I wonder if they have any plans to build a parking structure for commuters because that lot is nearly full every day.

Seriously though... I wonder who they're gonna sell those 30 acres to? And what's gonna be there in the future? I'm sure Burbank will have to do something to draw people to the city, so I'm sure that something big is gonna be put there.

On another note, 2011 is gonna be a big year for L.A. Mainly because a lot of projects will be completed in this timeframe...

This is huge news, because New York, smarting from it's latest failure to hold a parade down its "canyon of heroes", was salivating at the chance to have the show 'back' in NY. SUCK IT! And to Burbank, and anyone else, it's time to jump on the L. A. bandwagon. Before they overwhelm you. That way, you can say, "It's a good day for all the people of L. A.!:)

It's great that they're building next to the Red Line Station, but I hope that they actually advertise it unlike Universal Studios. I was checking a brochure and all that they had were driving directions.

Anyone have a diagram of exactly what they're going to build on? Will they take out the houses, build across the river, etc?

What's the likelihood of Burbank spearheading a NIMBY conspiracy to thwart NBC's big plans and essentially keeping them in Burbank or just not in LA? Sorry, most times I believe that their is a conspiracy behind every great idea that has failed. Has this area been set aside by Gail Goldberg and her crew as a spot where density should/can be increased? What's the neighborhood council like in that area? Strong? I guess NBC knows what they are doing but wouldn't it have been easier to build in Downtown or Hollywood......the Valley is historically very NIMBY or at least just got the city to underhandedly push it through like the proposed TOD atop the Noho station....now that's the way you push through a big development that will be ultimately for the good of the dumb obstinate people who live there.

NBC will move to Universal City

Media giant seeks to meld its many operations.

By David Kronke and Gregory J. Wilcox, Staff writers
October 10, 2007

Goodbye, Burbank; hello, Universal City.

That was the word Wednesday from NBC, the network that introduced the world to "Beautiful Downtown Burbank" and helped make it the "Media Capital of the World."

"The Tonight Show," local news operations and "Access Hollywood," along with other programming, will be relocated to Universal City, which includes Universal Studios, its theme park and CityWalk.

"This is part of a long-term strategy on the West Coast, centralizing our businesses in one location in Los Angeles," said Tom Smith, senior vice president of West Coast Real Estate for NBC Universal.

The new facilities - part of an $800 million skyline-altering development expected to be completed in 2011 - will be located adjacent to the Universal City Red Line subway station and feature an environmentally friendly West Coast news headquarters.

As officials did recently on the East Coast, the move will centralize all of NBC's news properties, including the news division of local affiliate KNBC (Channel 4) and Telemundo's KVEA (Channel 52), allowing them to collaborate on news stories.

Thomas Properties Group is developing and will own NBC's new home. The network will likely share its new space with other tenants.
The first phase - a five-story, 315,000-square-foot broadcast studio with a 24-story post-production office facility and another 24-story high-rise with six stories of parking - should be finished in 2011. A 34-story office tower or condominium hotel is scheduled for completion in 2015, said Ayahlushim Hammond, a senior vice president at Thomas Properties.

Eventually, the complex could employ about 3,200 people.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said his office has been working for months with NBC on the move and that it is a welcome boost to the local economy.

"Make no mistake about it, this is a major investment for the city," Villaraigosa said. "We could be talking about a $3 billion impact when it's completed."

Burbank exit

NBC - which moved to Burbank in 1952 from its former location at Sunset and Vine in Hollywood - is also planning to sell most of its Burbank property, then lease it back for the foreseeable future.

Which divisions of the network will occupy the space once the Universal City offices are completed is undecided.

Additionally, the network is refurbishing Stage One on the Universal lot - known as the Jack Benny Stage - to serve as home for "The Tonight Show" in 2009, when Conan O'Brien takes over as host, replacing Jay Leno.

As on the "Today" show, the new facility will feature a street-side studio with an outside view of the historic park Campo de Cahuenga while allowing visitors and transit users the ability to become part of the live backdrop for local newscasts and network productions.

It will also host the "Today" show and "Nightly News" when they are broadcast from Los Angeles.

"This presents an exciting opportunity that will encourage collaboration in terms of content sharing and provide a better work environment incorporating digital technologies," said John Wallace, president of NBC Owned-and-Operated TV Stations.

Rumors of a possible move for NBC have been floating around since its parent company, General Electric, acquired Universal Studios and renamed the merger NBC Universal in 2004. The move will allow for further corporate synergy of the sort promised when the two companies merged, said Rebecca Marks, NBC Universal TV Group publicity executive vice president.

"Our long-term plan has always involved bridging the motion picture and TV businesses," Marks said. "We'll be able to share content across many platforms - on the Internet, through MP3s and elsewhere - so there's a great potential for additional synergy."

Steve Capus, president of NBC News, is particularly bullish on the potential for greater collaboration between the network and the local affiliate's news divisions.

"There's a long, great history of NBC and KNBC working together," Capus said. "When Tom Brokaw anchored the local KNBC newscast, he was also contributing to `The Huntley-Brinkley Report,' so the idea of having journalists work together as part of one central nervous system is very back-to-the-future for us."

"The L.A. bureau will be reflective of our proud home and we expect that to be incorporated in live shots," Capus said.

Capus pointed out that the consolidation of news divisions is similar to the makeover that will be unveiled in Manhattan today. MSNBC and CNBC were relocated from New Jersey to 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York's Rockefeller Center to work more closely with NBC News.

"You have to think long-term in terms of where this business is going and make smart decisions about how the company is set up, and, structurally, this is doing that," Capus said. "This will allow NBC news to compete effectively. This is a long-term investment in news, and this new facility is a strong indication that we're in the game for the long term."

O'Brien's move to Universal could result in some synergy, as well.

O'Brien on the tour?

While spokeswoman Marks said it is too soon to tell whether his new stage will become part of the tours offered by Universal Studios Hollywood, she noted that his proximity to the theme park and CityWalk will likely present him with comic fodder.

The network emphasized its dedication to environmental concerns by moving into a "green" building, which will conserve both energy and water and strive to be a self-sustaining structure.

"Thomas Properties Group has a high commitment in building green buildings," Smith said. The building, as designed, has received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification of Silver. LEED certifications begin with Certified, ascending to Silver, Gold and Platinum, the most environmentally friendly certification.

NBC also hopes to further the greening of the network by making use of the adjacent Red Line subway.

"Absolutely, we'll be encouraging employees to use the Red Line," Smith said. "That was one of the factors that made that site that much more attractive to us."

Councilwoman Wendy Greuel, chairwoman of the city's transportation committee, said it is a good idea that the project is so near a Red Line station.

"However, I want to make sure that as this process moves forward, both NBC Universal and the surrounding community's needs are addressed," she said.

Rick Orlov and Kerry Cavanaugh contributed to this story.

As I said before, I believe that a parking structure will be needed either at this site or at the North Hollywood station. If you go to Universal City during the week, the station's parking lots are nearly full with commuter cars. Where will those cars go if this project takes up the parking lot? The North Hollywood lot is also always packed. When I was in LA this past summer, I wanted to take the Red Line into Downtown. I went to North Hollywood, but could not find a space anywhere and ended up parking down at the Universal City station (which was also packed by the way). Do we really want to turn away possible transit patrons by not providing them a parking space so that they can actually get out of their cars?

^^ Keep your panties on (K), There's a simple explanation to all of this. Which I learned while I was a Valley Resident. It's a bit weird but in reality it is Los Angeles. Universal City only pertains to Universal Studios the lot. There's no such thing as Universal City, California. Trust me! Universal has it's own zip code that's it. The area is known as Universal City because of the Studios. But funny thing is that if your on Ventura your Los Angeles, California. Which is all part of L.A. City proper. That's why LAPD patrols the area. Lankershim same thing if you drive north from Ventura everything on the right hand side is Universal until the split (Lankershim/Cahuenga). But everything is Los Angeles on the left hand side (Red Line Station) soon to be NBC mega project. SO when this is done NBC would be actually Los Angeles, California 900??. North Hollywood starts off at the split which is the first city in the Valley!!!

North Hollywood is not a city.

^ What do you mean NH is not a city. It sure it and will continue to be no matter how small it gets. Just for you to know that Toluca Lake, NoHo Arts, Valley Village and even Studio City was all North Hollywood at one point. Now NH only pertains to the North East section of the Valley Between (Burbank, Cahuenga, Sherman Way, Whitsett).

Like I mentioned before instead of calling it:

North Hollywood
Valley Village

You can use Los Angeles, California. 91605, 91606 or 91607!

North Hollywood is a neighborhood of the city of LA. The tax money from resident and businesses in that area go to the LA coffers. There is no city of North Hollywood political entity. If there were a city of NoHo, you would have my mayoral vote Ferney. :tyty:

Everybody knows that NoHo is not a city in the real term of the word, just the same as Hollywood is not a city or for that matter Century City
For it to be a city it has to have its own mayor publicly elected oficials etc.
It's just a name.
real cities would be Burbank, Pasadena, Glendale, Culver City, Santa Monica
Beverly Hills....etc. they all have their own mayors and city councils.

the facts.

Conan will move the show to california when he takes over the Tonight Show. Whether it will be Burbank or Universal, who knows what will be built by that point.
In NYC there will be a replacement for Conan, so NYC will have its own LateNIightwithSomeone. The Tonight Show no matter who is the host is always on a different coast than LateNIght no matter who is the host for the reason they want different guests. Of course now it doesn't matter as much as in the old (johnny/Dave) days but it still will always be on different coasts.

As great as the move next to Campo is..and it is a good move (imo).. you should still watch the clock and see the backlot eventually getting sold. I have told my husband for some time that the lot off Barham will be condos and homes by the 2010. Just makes sense. I don't like it but I think it is only going in that direction.

oh, yeah.. GE is trying to unload NBC, that's why they want to sell and look lean and tidy.

http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee192/trolltoast/2008_04_NBC-thumb.jpgLooks like NBC Universal's shiny new headquarters in Universal City is definitely happening: staff got an e-mail yesterday announcing M. David Paul Associates—one of the largest real estate developers in the city—purchased NBC's current 34-acre Burbank lot. NBC's new digs, on Lankershim near the Red Line stop, will be done by 2011 and will accommodate local NBC and Telemundo stations, NBC Network News, Access Hollywood, as well as Conan O'Brien's Tonight Show, which he takes over from Jay Leno next year. Seems like a good step for NBC which will now be across from the world-famous Universal Studios as opposed to a Wienerschnitzel.

And as with all big projects in the city, there's always some sort of challenge:

http://la.curbed.com/archives/2008/10/tom_labonge_throws_body_in_front_of_nbc_universal_steamroller.php

Tom Labonge Throws Body In Front of NBC Universal Steamroller

Councilman Tom Labonge (CD4) is standing with neighborhood groups opposed to the proposed NBC Universal development on top of the Red Line station in Universal City. The Daily News reports that Labonge has joined with the terribly named Committee United to Stop Growth (hey jerks, how about "for Smart Growth" or even "Slow Growth" or maybe more appropriately "to Time Warp Back to 1950.")

"What they are talking about is just too big for the area and there is not enough mitigation required to deal with the traffic," [said Labonge]. The $800 million project, in the planning stage for more than two years, calls for the construction of twin 24-story towers, a five-story studio complex and a 34-story high-rise to be built over the next eight years. The project will serve as the new home for NBC, which is leaving its Burbank headquarters. It is proposed for Metropolitan Transportation Authority land.

Labonge tells the Daily News he will investigate what special City Council powers he is authorized to wield in order to "slow down or scale back" the project.

That group needs to place the word economic between stop and growth, because this is the kind of bullshit that hurts our local economy when you have other states and countries such as Canada and now the UAE attempting to get their foot in the entertainment industry. They're simply not looking at the big picture.

Leno's an idiot. He's the worst interviewer in the world. He interrupts his guests, and every conversation always seems to end up about him and his stupid cars. Conan's funnier and is a much better interviewer. The Tonight show will definitely benefit from his edgy, New York style of comedy. Even Johnny Carson thought Leno was a tool.

Conesy's from Boston. I can call him 'Conesy' because I see him lots. That edgy, new york style of comedy you speak of may or may not work in the big time, but his bit players will not mind being here and making money.

Well, to each his own I guess. But the bottom line is, Leno is out, Conan is in. Blame the NBC execs.
But to be fair, Leno does have an audience out there, and I won't be the least surprised if some other network, like FOX maybe, picks him up to be the host of their late night talk show. Leno would be perfect for FOX, being a right wing conservative and all.

eh.. FOX network and FOX News is a bit different from each other. Comedy-wise, FOX network tends to have things that push the limits of its rating, like Family Guy and Mad TV. The right-wingness is really FOX News, not FOX network

lol.. with all this SNL sarah palin stuff, NBC now looks like it is trying to be the most right wing conservative of the networks.

i think Leno will go to ABC and compete at the same time slot and they will move Jimmy to the 12:30 slot.

Leno has easily beat letterman in the ratings for the last 10 years, not even close. I think Conan is funnier, but i enjoy Jay too. Letterman on the other hand, is just not funny.

First, I'd like to say to the people that NBC isn't moving anywhere. It never left. The entertainment arm has been in Burbank for the longest time. Second, I can remember, when most of you were lying in your respective cribs- peeing in the air, Dave had a morning show. I actually taped his first Late Night and he was funny and edgy- especially to the college crowd. He lost all of that when he moved to CBS and the "World's Most Dangerous Band" became the CBS Orchestra. He was funny just tossing stuff off a roof, now he's just mean, and this stuff about FOX being right-wing? They are the RED channel, and everyone else, especially NBC, is the BLUE channel. They gave it to Palin pretty hard last night; I wouldn't dare say they were right-wingers. When Leno is a free agent, he'll call his own shots.

Of course I remember when Letterman was on NBC. This was back when I was in college, I'd stay up to watch Carson then if I didn't have an early class the next morning I'd stay up to watch Letterman. The bits I enjoyed the most was when he had Rupert Gee go out in the streets of New York playing practical jokes on people while a hidden camera was taping it all. I think they had to quit doing that one day when some dude pulled a knife out on poor Rupert

You've also got to hand it to the late "Larry 'Bud' Melman", handing out hot towels at Penn Station to tourists coming off the trains. He'd thrust the microphone in your face before he was done asking his question, therefore, you never knew the entirety of his question!

YAMS! That's not the way of things- especially in the entertainment world! Think about it this way: Cones is picked to take over for Letterman when Letterman jumps ship, makes a big mistake in keeping with New York, and while Letterman languishes in second place for years because of his mis-step- Cones (who'd already been in Los Aneles for a while writing for "The Simpsons) takes loser Letterman's job at "Late Night". Jay, who's tireless and could have gone on and buried Letterman, moves on over for Conan when he's ready for (what we call around here) The Big Time! As for Torre, my guess is that the Dodgers are the closest thing to New York that you can get without settling for the Mets. It's also what we refer to as "The Big Time"- and Lasorda's there too. Personally, Timoney was my preference for Chief of Police simply because of his freakin' accent- but L. A. needs a big time motivator. Los Angeles is a real test for Bratton. There aren't 38,000 cops walking around here with the time to acumulate donut crumbs on their rosey little cheeks! Once again- The Big Time! But you know who we can take from New York? You, Yams! You're supposed to come here and strip for the chicks so's we can earn enough money to fill in our downtown parking lots! It's time you moved....... on up to The Big Time :)

Regarding seeing Conan O'Brien, you take the subway to his L.A. show just as you would his N.Y. show. Looking here (http://www.tonightshowwithconanobrien.com/tickets/directions.shtml), they really urge people going to the show to use the Metro Red Line.
