Dale Mabry getting a facelift
Thursday, October 11, 2007

TAMPA (Bay News 9) -- Dale Mabry Highway, known for its infamous bumpy ride, is in store for some smooth sailing.

Kris Carson with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) said they are spending $4.2 million on the project. That includes new drainage pipes and other cosmetic work done at the Bay to Bay intersection.

"We're in a sense widening that intersection," Carson said. "We're not adding any lanes or capacity. We're just fixing that jog or curve in the road."

There will also be new traffic lights, steel poles and pedestrian countdown signals.

"This is definitely needed," Carson said. "This area definitely needed repairs."

The project is expected to start in November and last about a year.

The DOT said message boards and signs will be placed on Dale Mabry to notify motorists of the dates of detours and closures.

That's good news. Making a left off of NB and SB Dale Mabry can get hairy at times

One of the main focuses is the the intersection with Bay to Bay. What a disaster that northbound curve/jog can be.

Does anyone know what exactly they're doing to "fix" the curve? There are turning lanes on either side... I guess they can just make the bend a bit more sweeping and/or add a median NB?

^maybe shifting lanes, to remove some/all of the kink?

That's basically what they're doing. Kris Carson from FDOT said there won't be any additional lanes added.

Dale Mabry south of Gandy is also undergoing a renovation. Sidewalk improvements and some resurfacing. I don't know if the entire roadway will be resurfaced though. It definitely needs new pavement.

Looks like DM/SOG is being resurfaced completely. But FDOT is taking thier time b/c of base traffic. The SB lanes are done and NB will be done next.
