Have a great New Year all.

Sky Tower: What side on level 59?

The NW column (furthest away from old town)...outside setback L59.
Just that column x1 deep on the side facing the Interchange (Dusit Hotel), and two setbacks deep on the side facing towards Jumeirah (World Islands)

Thank you my friend

how many more floors are left?
define floors?
its now up to lev157 or 592m.there are 5 more habitable floors to reach 162 or 624m. then the spire section will stat whivh will have approx 40 "levels".totalling 205 actual floors (768m).but only 162 fl are counted officially.

So do you think they'll be at least on the second steel floor by the year's end?

Looks like that's a "no". This is taking an insanely long amount of time.

Does anyone know why the Burj Dubai does not have balconies? Was this ever considered in the planning? And if so, why did they take them out?

And will the tiers act as the balconies for the apartments or hotel rooms closest to them?

germantower
January 2nd, 2008, 03:41 AM
^^The tower had never had balconies planned........a reason is the wind speed on higher altitudes.......and imagine this one with balconys they would totally destroy the design....

one tier i dont know exactely which will act as a open observation deck......its the one at level 124....

FM 2258
January 2nd, 2008, 05:27 AM
^^

Yeah, balconies would take away from the sleekness of the building. Plus I doubt anyone wants a balcony at 144 stories.

The-Real-Link
January 2nd, 2008, 06:19 AM
On the balcony topic, I thought that the nearest apartments or function areas still have a balcony which is just the roof of the wing next to it. The floorplans show multiple wavy screens and other design elements that seem to indicate balconies on top of where every tier ends although I'm sure they'd stop them higher once the floor area becomes too small to use effectively.

CULWULLA
January 2nd, 2008, 11:47 AM
i reckon most tier rooftops will house BMU's. the balcony or observtion deck on 124 will be an amazing space. looking down 442m and up another 377m!

Hi all.

Hey Beyond. I wasn,t in the CS thread over there but I know what you mean - talk about overmoderation in that thread. I don't say much in that thread but I do go there daily as the CS is one of 8 projects I am watching closely and saving pics of. I only scour the net for pics of the Burj but the CS thread on SSP has great coverage by HarryC.

On Topic - here is a print showing the shape of tier 16 - levels 156, 157, 158, and 158 Mezz. The print is actually 158. The dimension grids are 4.5 meters. In it we can see the steel structure main vertical and horizontal pieces.

http://aycu14.webshots.com/image/38893/2003304947857975245_rs.jpg (http://allyoucanupload.webshots.com/v/2003304947857975245)

This structure is the most elegant and complex ever built. The many tiers change shape far more than any other and the height is unmatched. I know I'm preaching to the choir here but there is alot of envious haters out there. Each to there own but no true skyscraper fan can be hatin' this magnificent structure.

That's obviously a scissor stair; two stairs in one volume. They require at least a storey height = double a stair landing to landing height + landing slab thickness + slab thickness. Any idea how high the floor to floor height is at this location? Any sections available through this stair? Are there any code requirments for the minimum height of landing to landing height (fire-escape headroom)? Thanks in advance.

FTL: No second level of steelwork yet, I think thats the crane A-frame in the pic.

By the amount of steel hoisted up over the last few days, it cant be far away from starting.

Hi Helghast. Look back a few posts at the plan of tier 16 I posted. It shows the shape and size from the start of the steel. The grids on it are 4.5 meters so should be easy to figure out the approx. sq. footage.

VERY Approx. - 370 sq. meters or 4000 sq. ft. - the size of this tier. The size of the setback should be easy to approximate also.

The Burj Dubai now towers almost 600 metres above the emirate as it continues to solidify its position as the tallest structure in the world, developer Emaar Properties has announced.

Emaar said on Thursday the iconic mega-structure had reached 598.5 metres and 158 floors, over 90 metres higher than the world's tallest building, Taiwan's Taipei 101, and over 40 metres higher than the world's tallest free-standing structure, Toronto's CN Tower.

The only structure now left for the Burj to overtake is the KVLY/KTHI television mast in Blanchard, US, which measures 628.8 metres.

The Burj Dubai will not be officially recognised as the world's tallest structure until it is completed, which is expected before the end of 2008.

When completed, the tower will be the tallest building in the world in all four categories recognised by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), which ranks buildings on the basis of spire height, the highest occupied floor, roof height and pinnacle height.

Construction of the building's concrete structure finished at around 585 metres and contractors are currently working on the steel structure on top and the spire.

The spire will be built from the inside of the building and raised up using a hydraulic pump - meaning that the height will be adjustable.

Emaar has remained tight lipped over the final height of the Burj, but it is rumoured to be between 700 and 1,000 metres.

Local media reports last year said the final height of the Burj would be 818 metres, citing architects drawings posted on the internet.

The Burj Dubai is to be the centrepiece of a city within a city, Downtown Burj Dubai. The development as a whole will include 30,000 homes, nine hotels, 6.2 acres of parkland, 19 residential towers, the Dubai Mall, and a 30-acre man-made lake. The development will cost about $20 billion.

Emaar has partnered with South Korean construction firm Samsung Corporation and New York-based project manager Turner Construction on the project, which has been designed by Adrian Smith and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill of Chicago.

lol, i have to adjust that now to 819m. ;-)
the report also mentions it ONLY has the 629m KVLY mast to surpass. but this isnt true.
BURJD is currently 598m high (or 614m above slab).
there are still many masts in USA over 600m.

2 more in USA-628m, 624m, 27 more @ 609m, 3 @ 608m, 4 @ 607m,3 @ 606m,
9 @ 605m-600m!
so there are currently 49 masts over 600m in USA.

^^ i think they mentioned with "ONLY to surpass the KLVY mast" that this is the next big milestone for the BD to become the tallest built and still existing structure on earth.

Than the next milestone will be the mast in Poland which was 648m i think, to become the tallest man made structure ever.

And from that point on it will make history by every added floor!

That rainbow looked awesome. It looks like Dubai is the place to spend New Years.

I spent Christmas/ New Year's in Dubai last year (2006/07). The prices were specially jacked up so it is easy to "trash your cash" staying in any of the 5-star hotels. Prices were 400% what they were in October 2007, when I was there last. Sad but true. It helps to be stupidly rich, and I am not. I hope it eases as all of the new hotels open.

And if you want to drink then it helps to stay in 4 and 5-star hotels, these are the only feasible places for an outsider/ visitor to get hammered. But pricey.

Yes, that's about right if all goes to plan!

Wind your neck in dude! :bash:

Most of North America.....85% of 'your personal audience' was asleep when you posted that!

If you demand an answer most people will ignore you.

Have you tried Wikipedia?
Have you tried a Google search?

I'm sure I can safely speak for the whole of the SSC forum and we are all deeply sorry for neglecting your emergency post, we just didn't realize the gravity and life threatening urgency that has caused so much stress and personal anguish.
We all send our deepest sympathy to you and anyone who has the great fortune of being blessed with your iconic presence.

You must have been in complete turmoil and I humbly beg you to forgive us all.
I personally take full responsibility and I am hanging my head in shame.
Please don't ever regret registering with SSC, the whole thread would feel totally void and worthless without your contributions.

Please don't jump off a cliff to end this painful mortal coil, will you? :shifty:

Sorry Sky Tower but Westyguy is right...

I am posting very few as well since in my opinion it's not worth the time. When you ask a serious question (i.e. engineering stuff) you don't get an answer in the much visited SSC Threads like the Burj Dubai thread. If you post a stupid comment like "Wow looks good!" or "One more floor since last week" which is a total waste of space in a thread you get a comment on your post.
Because of that I prefer other forums where there are more professionals posting and where height is not the only aspect which matters.
SSC is good for updates of projects all around the world, what is awesome but you can't expect too much here Westyguy, sorry.

Luckily for Dubai updates I just have to look out of the window...

Correct me if I’m wrong, but using bastard in this context isn't meant to offend someone. Bastard is in this case more of a synonymous for chap, guy or anything like that.

No we don't, and the ones who have it are not allowed to make it public or show it to unauthorized persons.

Great pics, thanks Imre!

Is there already some inside information about building the steel structure? Didn't the concrete core have measurement deviations or things like that at such height? Is the steel fitting well at it's concrete 'foundation' and so on?
If anyone knows about such things, I hope it will be posted, cause if so we will have some nice stuff to discuss about! :)

Another question, does somebody know how this loading platforms are fixed on the building? There floating in the air so nice but it will give a huge weight on the construction!

Keep up the good work!

WOW! Amazing. And it will get a lot better. The magic of human engineering and desing, hehe :).

If Dubai keeps expanding into the gulf it will be half on land and half in the ocean, :D.

Seems to have been a good day for photography in Dubai, with clear weather.

Looking at the change since the early 90's, one can imagine how Dubai will look in another decade.

ZZ agreed, they are now working with tubular colums as opposed to steel "I" beams if you look at Imre's post 2695 pic number 3.

The will sleeve into each colums and tie in pretty fast with the structural bracing so we should see a rapid increase in height over the coming months.

I had not seen that, it looks very good. I like the way parts of the city is stretching over the water.

I see they will add new breakwaters, and trump international hotel and tower seems redesigned, but maybe its just a general render.

It all seems to be turning out well though, a city of the future. I think it will feel more urban (somehow the word urban makes me think of concrete, but i mean it in a designwise modern as well as social way) when more project are finished and the density is increased. There are quite large chops of emptiness in Dubai, not to talk about the lack of landscaping, as it is still in progress.

Are they aware of the raising sea level problem we'll have!? Artic ice is melting ( the portion of groenland.. which add water to the ocean actually... )at an never expected rate and oceans expands because its getting hotter , so why are they building in the coast? I know that dubai is in a sort of a bay but water will find his way through!?

Seems like cities near coast don't care, but in a near future, great cities will have to deal with it.

Yup, as I have mentioned earlier: The first floor was build with sections supplied by Nippon Steel while the rest will be (is being) build with 2 meters in diameter hollow tubes, supplied by ArcelorMittal and all of them already arrived on Eversendai's workshops in Dubai and Sharjah. The cross sections, supplied also by ArcelorMittal, are being delivered in parts as per the requirements.

Thanks Altin, great info.

So steel arriving on site pre-fabricated with webs, fittings etc should see some rapid progress with the steelwork from here on in.

www.burjdubai.com looks pretty but thats about all the use it has. It is well known the information on it acts more like a PR and Marketing campaign than a source of facts. Sometimes the info is accurate but the SSC community tends to know better.

It might be that the eventual aim is to have a floor built every 7 days, but at this stage we cannot form our own conclusion from direct observation as they have barely started the second steel floor and so the best answer to the original question is 'We dont know'.

Thanks Shamilo for the info and I understand Dettol's reaction to that figure: "wtf??" lol it was the same reaction i had. where did you get that figure from and how accurate is it?? i mean, that 'floor per day' rate is even longer than that of the construction of a concrete floor.

However, i thought id put that figure to the test and i did some simple number crunching and came up with this:

Current Date: 11/1/08 - 2nd week of the year
total number of weeks in a year = 52

current floor of Burj Dubai = 156
total no. of levels = 205, hence, no. of levels to go = 49
taking into account that each floor takes approx 7 days (and i know this may be sped up to 5 or even 4 days), then:

49 more weeks til Burj Dubai T/O? - appox 2nd last week of december 08 - the scheduled completion/top off date?

so even though 7 days per floor may seem like a way-off figure, it technically fits into the buildings construction schedule. I'm no architect or engineer, but i hope i am right here and if not, maybe Fury or Cullawulla can shed some light on this.
Thanks

January 11th, 2008, 02:22 AM
The plain and simple fact is that the rate each floor is built has varied for the entire construction of the building, and will continue to vary until it tops out. There was a time when the concrete core was rising a level every 3 days, but there were also times when it didn't rise for several weeks. The only times you can really say the tower is rising at a specific pace is when the construction crew hits a stride in between mechanical floors and knows exactly what they are doing, but that pace will only last as long as they are building the same floor over and over. As soon as it changes, things slow down. This steel structure is a completely different animal from the concrete structure below it, and it's going to take some time before the people who are building it get used to what they are doing. It's going to go a little slow right now, but soon it will hit a steady pace and frankly, we don't know what that pace is going to be. So all we can do is wait and see.
