Ok - Time for a question I've had for some time to be answered.

This is for our Dubai forumers. Not sure but a knowledge of arabic (I don't even know if that is what the UAE's native language is called ... :nuts:) may be helpfull.

What is the proper english pronunciation of Burj Khalifa ?

I've read 2 different ways and maybe they're not correct either ?
(in brackets is an example of only the vowel sound)

1 - Burj is pronounced berj (like her) or borj (like more) ?
2 - Khalifa is pronounced ka-le-fa with a heavy k like your clearing your throat and sounding ka (like can)- le (like lee) - fa (like fat) -- 3 syllables
or
a-ha-le-fa sounding like a (like at)- ha (like have)- le (like lee)- fa (like fat) -- 4 syllables ?

Hope that isn't too confusing. :)

This week apartment sellers in the Burj Khalifa’s Armani Residences have listed a number of two-bedroom units (http://www.arabianbusiness.com/armani-sellers-want-aed30m-for-2-bed-flat-408524.html) with asking prices of AED30m ($8.1m) each.

This equated to AED13,500 ($3675) per square foot – nearly 20% higher than during the peak of the property boom in Dubai.

The news comes just days after Arabian Business reported sale prices on the luxury Palm Jumeirah development have sunk to a four-year low, with apartments being offered for as little as AED650 ($176) per sq ft.

In 2008, before the property crash, Colliers reported that Armani units in the tower were valued at around AED11,000 per square foot, so do sellers need to get with reality and lower their prices and expectations for the market to move forward?

Thats rubbish, you can list anything with any asking prices but it doesnt mean thats the prices are increasing..

What I have heard ,the latest sale of the Armani Residences was 6000 AED only , for 1 BR ..

I have 2 BR for 9000 AED/sqft but never got any serious offer for it.

probably not , there is still lots of construction going on and that is going to happen in and around Dubai land, incomplete man made islands which could one day be occupied, lots of great real estate available. but a problem which could effect Dubai in the long run would be sea level rise and water supply, it will be interesting to see what happens to the city. :)

what i meant are actual supertalls. i think with the projects like the islands and developments around its a perfect thing to attract more people, but even higher buildings may not be profitable after so many supertalls were on hold or very slow in dubai already. i think with giant hotels dubai has enough for the next few years unless visitor numbers rise drastically again

I can understand the Chrysler building getting more votes than the Burj. Both icons of their time, but there is a certain romance that goes with the Chrysler building that the Burj can't compete with.

Hey guys, I needed some help in locating a picture. I have looked all over this thread and can't find a picture that was posted last year.

The picture includes a wide angle shot of Dubai (skyscrapers on SZR and Burj Khalifa in the distance) from Deira, and is tinted blue. When it was posted the pic was a major hit on here. I was wondering if any of you can help me locating it.

I posted a page or 2 ago that the CB and ESB are great icons and if any to beat out the BK I would be OK with them. I have a few books on both - I liked them long before the BK came along.

I posted the BK is one of the best designs ever. I have no problem with other peoples opinions Matt. My 'narrow minded' reply was in regard to his statement "the only aspect of it that stands out at all is its height".

The sandstorms gotta suck - no ?
It gets windy here often so things get dusty but nothing like that.
There must be a cm. thick layer of sand on everything by the time the storm is over ?
I guess most keep the windows closed (with the A/C wide open) so not so bad inside. Here, I keep all my windows wide open in the summer when I'm home - I don't have A/C so when it's over 30 c it is hot inside.

Emirates Airline has teamed up with hotels in Dubai to offer first class and business class passengers, flying to and via Dubai, complimentary hotel stays and 96-hour transfer visas.

- The Club (annex) not open yet (AFAIK), completed ?
- The Offices (annex) completed ?, any offices leased ?
- The Boutique offices completed ?, any offices leased ?
- The 4 residential zones complete (IMO), handovers completed ?
- The hotel complete and open.
- The OD complete and open.

The last 2 seem obvious but I include them in the list to help show the structure is only half complete AFAIK (less than half in physical area ...).

I suppose, though the lack of permanent lighting on the spire at night, to show off it's full height is particularly annoying. Much of the spire sits in total darkness for most of the time, unless there is a fountain show on :(

I would say there are water tanks on all mechanical levels, serving the sections below them. Also the plans had 3 water tanks on the lower levels of the steel structure that were also supposed to act as balancer for the sway.

I like what Petronas has done for the tips of th ebuildings. It makes them sparkle. The top of the Burj needs a slightly more spectacular lighting feature - I guess the key would be a permanent and spectacular lighting feature. Even if the mechanical floors had some sort of special lighting, wrapping around the tower in bands, it would look better.

See what I mean about the Petronas Towers.... these lights are on all night, every night.... They have lights at the top and around the mechanical floors....

I respect the Burj Khalifa for it's height and the fact it's pushing engineering and construction to the limit but visually I don't really find it that impressive. I'm not trolling here...

The Empire State Building for example, is half its size, 80 years older, and I think a lot more dominant and impressive than Burj Khalifa. Surely this shouldn't be the case for a 828m building? The Burj Khalifa just looks like a giant spire, for me it fails...

Completely agree!!!! The only reason this bothers me is that this is THE world's tallest building, so it should have been fitted with a lighting scheme to match.

^^To be fair the fact that it is the tallest building makes it all the more compliacted. Especially since the design is a consistent taper to the thin spire, there are limited elements with which to explore more dynamic lighting. At least, compared to other structures.

Let's face it, the building is so tall ground level spotlights don't impact the spire!

Let me correct a statement in my last post.
The hotel and 4 residential zones are more than half in physical area.

I do think the residential zones are complete and I agree the handovers are probably not complete. We have heard news on the handovers before and I would hope we will hear when they are done.

The boutique offices will be completed shell and core only by Emaar except the 3 level office suite (which is complete). I consider the zone complete when this is done, not when the tenants are finished their fitout. I think the office zone is close to being completed by these parameters - perhaps even done.

I'm presuming 'The Offices' (annex) will also be completed shell and core so it also should be close or even done.

'The Club' (annex) must be close to being completed by now but at least we will know because it will be open to the public - I've heard no news on this yet and I'm sure we will.

There is no level 206, although some continue the level count up from the highest named level into the sections above but this is not official.

Here's the poop ...

- Highest occupied (and highest tenant) level is 154 at 584.50 meters.
- Highest named level is 160 mezz. 3 at 634.10 meters.
- Highest point a worker can access is the top platform at 826.60 meters.

this goes for a lot of cities as well, but, dubai is in the desert, it should stop trying to turn its boulevards and lawns into rainforest. you can have colourful, lush foliage with xeriscaping. it saves a lot of energy and pollution, too, by not having to supplement water. why try to change the natural environment in the first place? it throws the ecosystem out of whack.

Maybe, but as Altin said, they used treated water, which is not fit for drinking to irrigate the greenery.

I showed my sister a picture of the Chicago Spire's silhouette when it was on hold and she burst out laughing. She said that the picture looked like the Chicago skyline with a giant phallus in the center. I later told her that it was in fact a joke and that building was not going to be built. She once again laughed at the fact that the building was approved in the first place. Although, If it was made, It would have been priceless to see her face the next time she would have gone to Chicago.

Rents in Burj Khalifa, the tallest tower in the world, have fallen by almost 25 per cent in the first half of 2011 compared to last year, as unit owners prefer to rent rather than sell at lower prices.

According to Harbor Real Estate, a studio, leased for Dh120,000 a year in 2010, is now being rented for Dh90,000, while Elysian Real Estate puts studio rents in the range of Dh75,000-Dh85,000.

One beds, as per Harbor data, are available for Dh120,000 as compared to Dh160,000 pa in 2010; two-beds can be rented for Dh180,000 (Dh240,000), while three- and four- beds are available for Dh240,000 (Dh300,000) and Dh320,000 (Dh350,000), respectively.

Elysian’s data reveals one-beds are being rented for between Dh110,000 and Dh120,000 compared to Dh130,000-Dh140,000 last year; two-beds are being leased for Dh140,000-Dh210,000 (Dh180,000-Dh240,000), three-beds start from Dh270,000-Dh300,000 (Dh300,00-Dh350,000), while four-beds, which are rare to market, remain at around Dh550,000-Dh650,000.

Why did this happen? We all know, that there is an overabundance of units in Dubai, but I would have expected that the tallest building would be more in demand.

Even though this building is the tallest, it doesnt look iconic!

I like the looks of bk. It's image may seem iconic, but it really doesn't symbolize a prosperous economy, or anything to make it truly iconic in my opinion. I say this partially because of how slowly the residential space is being filled out, and also because of the valueless city it was built in. It is a shame, because I think Dubai is a beautiful city, but the emirates just doesn't have the money it likes to believe it does.

Yeah, I don't wanna get off topic but that's just not true. Especially the part about government bonds. The stock market is kinda a ridiculous claim too because those are global companies - of course they have investors from around the world.

I agree, and I think the only thing the new wtc has that is iconic is the fact that it is memorializing the old ones, and the 3,000 that died. If a 1000m building shot up somewhere in NYC in this economy, I'd sure be amazed, but I wouldn't label it as iconic aside from any other circumstances.

Why would it get moved to the archives ??

The term completed in the thread title is meaningless ....
The whole of the works of this project is not complete, therefore the project is still U/C.

- I think the 4 residential zones are complete but there is still no word on whether all the units have been handed over. We have heard various numbers of how many were handed over a few times so I expect we will hear when all are handed over.
- No word on whether the office zone is complete as far as Emaar is concerned, as in core and shell for all levels except the 3 level office suite which is complete.
- No word on whether 'The Offices' (annex) is complete (also core and shell I presume)
- 'The Club' (annex) is not open yet and since it will be open to the public we will surely hear about that. Also no word on whether it is complete.

All of the above has nothing to do with occupancy which obviously has nothing to do with completion.

As with all the other secretive things on this project we may never hear about the above points except for The Club opening, so do what you gotta do with the thread.
I have a sneaking suspicion that we are close to completion of the whole of the works but personally I will wait for some indications before I call it completed.

I have not wrote but every day visited the thread.
Well just wanted to show my model of the Burj Dubai and say I'm a big fan of this building is but I consider myself just as fanatical as fury and like many others.:lol:

No doubt this building is a great work of architecture and engineering, which set a record in construction design for wind deflection characteristic touch or Arabic, and of course its technology so cutting edge.
And I think all of us who have followed its construction has been an unforgettable experience, despite the hundreds of kilometers away from Dubai, we saw the construction step by step and would not be possible thanks to Imre, Oldtown resident, altinD, 234sale , desert diver, gerald, etc.

I hope someday to go to dubai tower and know this person, doubtless love this building a great work of engineering and architec.

For now I leave my model photos of burj who had begun 5 months and still do not and over, I hope to open a forum for models and share photos of progress.:)

As I said in my last post we may never hear about most of the zones being completed so they can do what they gotta do with the thread. My vote is for it to remain here untill we get some indication of completion but it really doesn't matter to me. I don't post here so it can be seen by the masses anyway. As you stated, the archived threads can be posted in and you can guarantee I will continue to post there.

I realize there is more than one mod for this thread but Erbse, why do you act like you are the man and you will move the thread ? Don't the other mods get a vote ? As I stated above it matters not to me where this thread is on the forum but you sir are really pushing your 'authority" as mod in many threads and it is getting under peoples skin - including mine. For instance, why wank about people posting in color, then do it yourself in this very thread ??

Perhaps the admin can decide to move it, no problem, but then attempt to curb the over-moderation (by some) once there.

I don't decide anything alone here, though I could. It's not like moderators of this section have to discuss single thread movements.

We had several discussions about Burj Khalifa in the past and it turned out, after moving this to the Archives already 1 year ago, being moved out of the archives by other mods. A matter of misunderstandings there. In fact, we already had an agreement to move this. We're not discussing everything openly, don't forget about that.

I don't insist on my authority, please stop implying things like that.
I'm only looking for the clarity and quality of these sections and am quite busy with that. The WDN forums are in fact highly undermoderated, not the contrary. What you usually don't see is the massive amount of spam, advertisements and offtopic discussions that is kept off the threads. It's all moderator's spare time, we don't get paid for that. DUBAI, Aug 2 (Reuters) - Kingdom Holding , owned by Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, said on Tuesday an associate firm signed a contract worth 4.6 billion riyals ($1.23 billion) with Bin Laden Group to build the world's tallest tower in Jeddah.

The proposed tower will stretch a kilometre high and include a hotel, serviced apartments, luxury condominiums and offices, Kingdom said in a statement.

If completed, the tower will replace Dubai's Burj Khalifa, standing 828 metres tall, as the tallest tower in the world. The Burj Khalifa was built by Emaar Properties for a total cost of $1.5 billion.

The tower is part of the first phase of Kingdom City, which is being built north of the Red Sea port city.

Kingdom said the associate firm, Jeddah Economic Co., will be 16.63 percent-owned by the Bin Laden Group while Kingdom will hold a 33.35 percent stake in the venture.

The US-headquartered architectural practice Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture (AS+GG) has revealed the design for the Kingdom Tower, which is to be the world’s tallest building at 1 kilometre height.

It will be built in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The tower’s height will be at least 173 meters (568 feet) taller than the world’s current tallest building, Dubai’s 828-meter-tall Burj Khalifa, which was designed by Adrian Smith while at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM).

At over 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) and a total construction area of 530,000 square meters (5.7 million square feet), Kingdom Tower will be the centerpiece and first construction phase of the Kingdom City development on a 5.3 million-square-meter site in north Jeddah.

Thumbs-up or veto: The Burj Khalifa is a great option for singles or young couples. The building is, however, not ideal for families with children.
Why Burj Khalifa: I used to live in Jumeirah Lakes Towers but always dreamt of living in the Burj Khalifa. When the prices dropped, I lapped up the opportunity to buy a two-bedroom apartment on the 21st floor of the Burj Khalifa. I bought it for Dh4.2 million. My apartment offers great views of Shaikh Zayed Road and the sea.
Where you let your hair down: I head to the Dubai Mall to enjoy its multiple attractions.
Advantages: I particularly enjoy the comfort and peace associated with high-end vertical living. The main attraction, however, is the unparalleled location.
Niggles: The main glitches would be the two small swimming pools and gyms. These can get crowded if there are many people using them simultaneously. I think these facilities are not appropriate for a building with approximately 800 apartments and where owners also pay high maintenance fees. I wouldn't recommend the Burj Khalifa to people who use facilities like the pool and gym on a regular basis.

The official highest occupied level is also the highest tenant level. It is the highest level of the 3 level office suite - level 154 at 584.50 meters or 1917.7 feet. Of course, maintenance personnel can go right to the top.

Wow burij khalifa is going to lose its crown already one of the fastest reigns in buliding history.

Actually, since the Kingdom tower is so high, I estimate that the Burj Khalifa will hold its crown for at least 7 years, which will be needed for the 1000 meter tower to be built.^^

So, I take it they are measuring the height all the way to the top of the needle? How much taller is this than the building in Dubai?

More importantly, will we see the "Build It Bigger" crew from the Science Channel out there? [:)]

Since kingdom tower could be 1km high, it should be 172 meters taller than BK.

We will have to see if this one really gets built.

Muslims residing on top of the 80th floor in Dubai’s Burj Khalifa must delay their evening Iftar meal during Ramadan by two to three minutes as they see the sunset later, according to the Dubai Islamic Affairs Department.

Those residents should also start their daily fasting two minutes earlier on the grounds dawn descends on them before those living on lower levels, the Department said in a Fatwa (edict) published by Emarat Alyoum daily.

“Residents in Burj Khalifa should observe varied timings for iftar, sunset and dawn prayers depending on the level where live,” the paper said, quoting Ahmed Al Haddad, head of the Fatwa division at the department.

He said Muslims living on the 80-150 floors in the 828-metre tower, the world’s tallest structure, should delay their iftar meal by two minutes while those on the 151-160 floors should break their fasting three minutes late.

“Residents on 80-150 floors should also perform evening and night prayers two minutes late and dawn prayers two minutes earlier while those above the 150th level should delay their evening and night prayers by three minutes and bring forward dawn prayers by three minutes,” he said.

“This difference in timing on the 162-storey building is because sun sets later for residents on top floors while these residents are the first to see the sun at dawn.”

The investment company headed by Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal says it plans to complete the world's tallest tower in just over five years time.

The Kingdom Holding Co did not say Sunday when work would begin on the Kingdom Tower.

The $1.2 billion tower will be roughly two-thirds of a mile (1 kilometer) high. It is part of a $20 billion mega project on the outskirts of the Red Sea city of Jiddah.

The tower will be built by the Saudi Binladen Group construction conglomerate. It will cost $400 million and feature a Four Seasons hotel, luxury condominiums and offices that encompass around 5.4 million square feet.

The four-bedroom apartment is on the 87th floor of Burj Khalifa and includes the highest residential terrace in the tower. It is one of only six four-bedroom apartments in the Burj Khalifa with terraces.

"There are only six of these units in the world and there will be a premium to be paid," said George Malakos, an agent with Elysian Real Estate who is marketing the apartment.

Keeping safe and sound is one thing, but I seem to be able to pass through high-security airport checkpoints with greater ease than I do my own car park these days.

Despite the fact I haven’t changed my car nor my appearance since I moved in, the security guards in my building still look at me suspiciously, asking for my allotted parking number on a regular basis.

And yet these flimsy, rusting, car park gates are as inefficient as barn doors in a gale, compared with the security that residents enjoy at Burj Khalifa. Upon a recent visit to a friend’s newly rented apartment, I stumbled spectacularly at the very first security hurdle.

With Dh25 already on the cab metre, the amount had almost reached Dh40 before the barrier to the exclusive residence was lifted. Try as I might to spell and respell my painfully long and complicated name to the security guard, or pass him the resident on my phone, the barrier remained down for such a long period of time that I started to question whether Justin Beiber hadn’t unexpectedly dropped in for tea and put the place on high alert.

When I was finally allowed to step foot inside Fort Knox, I signed in and made my way to the lifts only to realise that I didn’t have the relevant security pass to allow me to scale the iconic building’s heady heights. Once a staff member appeared and cheerily sent me on my way to level 43, the same problem presented itself. As I emerged from the lift, a sleek, teak receptionist’s desk stretched out before me. Yet no receptionist was to be found. Also conspicuously absent was any sort of a phone signal, rendering me unable to call my friend for a rescue; the same friend who must have – by this time – thought I was scaling the outside of the building with sucker pads à la Spider-Man.

Finally, a white knight appeared in the form of an unknown resident, who swiped the magic black panel within the lift that then zoomed me at ear-popping speed to the 60th floor. After inspecting the beautiful apartment, a tour of the building was in order and as I was whisked around a maze of floors and rooms it dawned on me that should my pal and I ever became separated, I would probably never find my way

Haute Eat: At.mosphere

High on top the 122nd floor of the Burj Khalifa is a special place: At.mosphere. Recently opened but a few months prior, the restaurant has already awed Dubai residents and travelers to the region.

Atmosphere’s sumptuously decorated interiors by renowned hotel designer Adam Tihany feature warm mahogany walls and ceilings with a high gloss finishing, Tihany furniture, hand-tufted carpet and floors of cafe au lait colored limestone. Such rich decor echoes the divine nature of this epitome of gourmet heaven.

We were served from the Summer Menu, a list of dishes specifically tailored to the season. Our meal began with a refreshing starter entitled Watermelon made with Persian feta cheese and heirloom tomatoes and Langoustines featuring steamed courgette flower and baby peas. The restaurant’s knowledgeable sommelier paired our first few dishes with a 2009 Pascal Jolivet Sancerrre Rosé from the Loire Valley, a rare and distinct rosé made from Pinot Noire and featuring a delicate strawberry and fruit aroma.

As each dish was served we marveled at the presentation and dainty size. Delectably concocted to be sure, what we didn’t expect was such an artistic presentation; colors and forms were arranged in such a way as if it to represent an artistic still-life. The Foies Gras was an immediate hit. Featuring smoked spelt risotto, sweet wine jelly, and ginger bread, the plate’s small size was made up through an explosion of rich tastes further heightened through the coupling of different hot and cold ingredients. The cool texture of the sweet wine jelly was juxtaposed against the warm risotto uniquely enlivened the palette to a wonder of flavors.

For the main dish we opted for the catch of the day which we were told had been specially flown in and prepared in order to maintain freshness. A delicate sea bass arrived served with pureed peas and coupled with a light 2008 Chablis Premier Cru Fourchaume from Burgundy, France. The Chablis featured an enticing creamy nose with clean mineral notes and a muted palate which was juxtaposed nicely with the fresh and decadently simple nature of the fish. We were explained that the restaurant uses what is called a Josper Oven. Originating in Spain, this wood stove charcoal broiler oven doesn’t use gas and therefore guarantees a product’s freshness.

On to the dessert, we were served a 2007 Chateau Batailley 5eme cru classé from Bordeaux, France alongside a beautifully sculpted chocolate mousse with thyme ice cream. The Jivara, as it was called, was served in such a precise form with thin squares of chocolate positioned in box-like formation complete with a long string of caramel balancing on the top, that it almost appeared to be a maquette for an architectural construction. Enraptured by its creation, we were hesitant to eat what appeared to be such a meticulously crafted sweet. The taste was heavenly. Rich, smooth, and creamy; the richness of the mousse was further heightened by the earthy taste of the thyme and the nutty nose of the Chateau Batailley. Divine. A final treat were petite madeleines served fresh from the oven.

The sophisticated ambiance and regal nature of the cuisine seemed to have transported us to another place and time. We had dined in the world’s highest restaurant, a fact which certainly added to our wonderment.

The At.mosphere Grill goes beyond it’s altitude. It is in a class of its own.
