Sky Tower January 11th, 2008, 05:35 AM Actually, that red circled area is the foundation mat for just the central core column and is around 74m in diameter. To give you an idea, the building reveals this first setback at this diameter at L19 up to L43 for the first 3 sebacks.
The 3 tiered podium section extends well beyond this foundation mat by a shallower foundation extended beyond what you see in the photograph and extends to 91m in diameter.
Again, the 3 buildings situated on the outskirts of the podium section extend to a base diameter of over 127m with the underground carpark sections extending much further out again filling the whole dugout area that takes up that photograph.

I am sorry, but I did not understand anything you said. It is too technical for me.
I will rephrase my question. If I were to draw a red circle around the current footprint of the Burj Dubai, what would be the diameter of that circle (this circle only goes around the tower, not around the buildings and the underground areas)?
I ask for the diameter because I am trying to find the area of that circle. But I would also be interested to know what the area of the base of the tower is; if anyone knows that.
Thank you.
Alle January 11th, 2008, 07:47 AM Are they aware of the raising sea level problem we'll have!? Artic ice is melting ( the portion of groenland.. which add water to the ocean actually... )at an never expected rate and oceans expands because its getting hotter , so why are they building in the coast? I know that dubai is in a sort of a bay but water will find his way through!?
Seems like cities near coast don't care, but in a near future, great cities will have to deal with it.
Historically during warmer climate periods the sea level doesnt really rise that much. But im sure they would be able to handle it. Just like many other older cities have already had to do through history.

Hey LoverOfDubai,
Im sorry I didnt paste this (http://burjdubaiskyscraper.com/2007/Fury_plans/The%20Tier%20Methodology%20of%20the%20Burj%20Dubai.doc) link up when I initially responded. Its not official but a lot of time has been spent explaining the "Tier Methodology" as it puts it. You will find the first tier, that which encompasses the raft foundation in your picture, is stated as being 51m from the central core.
You will also find figures for the podiums below the first tier, which Sky Tower touches upon in some way in his response above. I hope this information answers your question but feel free to PM me if you need anything further.
Cheers for your input Sky Tower.
Thank you to Bikes site www.burjdubaiskyscraper.com from where I am sourcing it.
CULWULLA January 11th, 2008, 10:35 AM i think as Burj Dubai rises the steel sections will be constructed quicker. they end up real tiny compared to current sections so maybe the upper levels will be hoisted up as one section and simply bolted on. the pinnacle will be also hoisted up and telescoped into position as the steel structure is built around it. i think it will top out within next 6 months.

I don't know if they're going to do it with prefabricated sections wich are hoisted up in one time. Measurement of steel constructions is very precise compared to concrete constructions. Maybe they do hoist up big sections, but the fitting and fine-tuning of the construction will take the most time. Especially at that height they're must be very careful with constructing. And besides they're going to uplift a great pinnacle wich has never been done before at such scale and such height! The more I think about it the more interesting it becomes! We'll see it the next half year!

The diameter of a circle around the current footprint of the Burj Dubai (at ground level which is the base of podium 1) is approx. 184.6m, according to my model. That figure may be slightly off by a tiny bit but it's very close. The area of podium 1 (base of tower) is approx. 6713m squared. Hope this helps

Simply put it's diameter is 91.4m
The circle you've outlined is 74m in diameter as it's only the central (much thicker) part of foundation mat which is shown which bares most of the weight.
However, multiplying the diameter of the base (91.4m) by Pi (3.14) will not give you the area of the footprint as the footprint is not a circle.
If you tell me what you wish to know, maybe I can help a bit more? :dunno:

AltinD January 11th, 2008, 11:35 PM ^^ First of all the pic was taken in a public holiday, second don't judge Dubai by European or North American city standards. The layout of the city and the way life is organised, is different and adapts to the climate.
What would people do in a construction site? Why would the white collar class working on the towers in front would be moving around the place for lunch, when the facilities are within the same building?
It is very complicated to explain and even more difficult to understand, unless you've spent a considerable amount of time in the city; Not only that, but you have to be open-minded, leave prejudices home, and be genuinely interested to know what's really going on.
Some don't and come back with some kind of whining crap.

I'm about 90% sure that December 2008 is the T/O date, although current construction status and views from other forumers suggest a much earlier date.
Nonetheless we can't ignore primary sourced info direct from Emaar and in my opinion, the tower will t/o december this year.
Also from an article i read (can't remember which one), it stated that the interior contractors would require or are given 6 months after t/o to complete all the interior work and have the building ready for occupancy by the latter part of 2009 (approx july-september).

ARMANI AT THE BURJ
The first Armani brand hotel is expected to be opened by the first quarter of 2009 and is under construction as part of the Burj Dubai development. The Dubai 'Armani Hotel' will include 175 guest rooms and suites, five restaurants and a spa, covering more than 40,000m². Alongside the hotel, the Burj Dubai will also offer 160 luxury residential apartments all designed by Giorgio Armani and fully furnished with a specially designed line of products from the Armani Casa home furnishings collection.
The schedule of Armani hotel openings to follow Dubai will be Milan, London, and New York along with the first resort. Giorgio Armani said, "This marks the beginning of a new chapter in the Armani story. In this our thirtieth anniversary year, I cannot think of a more energising prospect than bringing my philosophy of style and design to a collection of hotels and resorts.
"Today, more than ever before, fashion has expanded to encompass our way of life, not just how we dress, but where we live, which restaurants we eat at, which car we drive, where we go on holiday and which hotels we stay in.
"I strongly believe that for those people who enjoy the Armani fashion and home furnishings collections there will be a real enthusiasm for the possibility to now stay at an Armani hotel or resort. This continues our ongoing strategy of building the Armani universe into a comprehensive lifestyle brand."
Hope this answers your question:)

BD (818m) => 103km or 65 miles.
ESB 80 miles is nonsense, it is not even 80km.
The distance is only weakly dependent on the height, because the formula contains a square toot. To convert the height to the max viewing distance simply do the following:
1- divide the height (in m) by 5
2- take the square root
3- multiply by 8
...and there is the distance in km!
This is not exact but very accurate for all practical purposes.
Of course you can look a bit further when you are above grond level yourself. Standing on a flat desert an average person (eye height 1.6m) may add 4.5km.

FM 2258 January 13th, 2008, 10:16 PM Wy do u want American airline when u have Emirates?
I have most miles on American so if it's around the same price as Emirates I might take American. I've read that Emirates economy isn't that great anyway compared to other airlines.
To make this post more on topic it mind boggling to see how much Burj Dubai has an impact from so far away. If this were in Downtown Austin I would be able to see it from my apartment which is about 20 miles away.
Sander- January 13th, 2008, 10:24 PM I have most miles on American so if it's around the same price as Emirates I might take American. I've read that Emirates economy isn't that great anyway compared to other airlines.
Oh?
Emirates had, according to wikipedia, profits of US$762 million in the middle of a huge expansion last year. While American Airlines, who lost money just 3 years ago - now made profits of $291 million :) So if that's your reasoning I'd go with Emirates;) Plus! With their new fleet of A380's they got a far more modern fleet also...
Awesome skyline pictures people - i got a new desktop background
cooperchris January 13th, 2008, 10:45 PM I know that the footprint is not a circle, I was only talking about the circle drawn around the footprint.
And, although Sky Tower said the diameter is 91.4 m, someone else said that the diameter is 184.6 m. I automatically assumed that Sky Tower made a mistake between diameter and radius.

jlh630 January 14th, 2008, 01:37 AM Holy shit Fury. I think I just came. When I see pictures like that, I can't believe this tower is real. Thank you so much for finding those and posting them. Wow.
The-Real-Link January 14th, 2008, 04:08 AM I knew all along how huge this thing is but these ariels put it in new perspective - either getting really close or have a great zoom lens (or both)!. They are just absolutely sickening in a good way for us skyscraper fans and so THANK YOU for getting or shooting those! I shiver with excitement just understanding how darned high this will be in the end.
For anyone in the States, I was just explaining to my mom that you basically are still going to be placing the Detroit Marriott center tower of the Renaissance Center (around 235 meters high and the tallest building in Detroit) ON TOP of this structure to get the final height! Well, close enough for her to understand that without grasping meters as well as we do here ;)
Amazing. Absolutely amazing.

Breathtaking Photos!!
Thanks for Sharing
Just looking at the 3rd photo there, it seems as if they have already completed the 2nd level of the steel structure and have commenced construction on the 3rd level.
However, the last zoomed in pic shows that only 1 level of steel has been completed.
This is starting to get annoying now. More progress please!!

Appreciate the comments. I really haven't had the time to post as much as I used to but I thought you guys would like those shots. I will try to post more if at all possible. My hats off to all the photogs.
I see the first entrance is really taking shape. Level 156 is looking like it must be getting close to a concrete pour - not quite but close. Level 157 is starting to get a few vertical pieces - nice. And the cladding is coming along - looking good.
This thing is unreal to most people I talk to. They just can't fathom 156 floors. And when they hear 1/3 more to go thet are just floored. We are witnessing a new era for tall structures. AWESOME !!!

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) -- President Bush on Monday got a flavor of this cosmopolitan banking and business hub, whose glass skyscrapers and booming construction have turned it into the capital of Middle East bustle.

So why do the steel floors take so long to put up? Is there a technical reason, or are they just slow? :bash:
AltinD January 14th, 2008, 11:08 PM ^^ Let me think:
- difficulties related to the first floors that require a much much higher precision then the upper floors
- more controls and tests related to the materials
- more difficulties to work in such heights.
Anyway the first floors are always slower then the others, even when you are at ground level.

AltinD January 15th, 2008, 11:30 PM Neither the 1991, 1992 or 1999 pictures are dated corectly. The first two were said to have been from mid '80s while the third one is from 1998.
When I first came in Dubai in Nov. 99 I was seeing the Emirates Towers from my Hotel (just lesft of the place from where the pic was taken), and they were topped out with mostly the spires remaining. The towers opened before summer the next year.
BTW it was cool this evening to see only some 300 meters of Burj Dubai and the rest totally obstructed as it was cut off by the clowds.
Omaro January 15th, 2008, 11:39 PM I have been telling everyone that there is no way such pictures are dated correctly, but everyone just assumes they are true. I still remember back in 1993 going home from the airport and seeing the first interchange, SZR had at least 3 or 4 lanes then, also, the old Safeway shop was where Thunder Bowl is (Or was, even that closed), and my family has been going grocery shopping there for as long as I rememmeber, probably early 199os, there were roads leading to it obviously (Proper ones, not ones dug in the sand or whatever). Small details, but hey, don't believe everything people say, including me :D

Looking at the two leaders there, I know who I'd put my trust in, and it ain't that inbred retard on the left.
At least you can get rid of him. Quite soon actually.
The other one will just kill you if you try to get rid of him.
Funny you mentioned inbred, but you pointed the wrong man there too.

The guy I'd trust is the one on the left, cause if I don't like him I could vote him out or he'll go after 8 years. The guy on the right....well that's the guy I wouldn't trust.
I would hope Tumbling Dice can get it together and post about the Burj Dubai and NOT world politics.
At this point I can't wait to see how tall this building gets. I feel it will be a tall surprise at the end. Taller than 819m.

Nakheel to reveal plans for new era of waterfront development at TDIM 2008
Dubai, 14 January 2008: Nakheel, one of the world’s largest privately-held property developers, will showcase plans for its new era of waterfront development at this year’s TDIM 2008 (Tourism Development project & Investment Market), a new exhibition taking place at Dubai World Trade Centre on 20th to 22nd January.
Nakheel will play a key role in the first ever TDIM exhibition with the largest stand in the company’s history, which is approximately the same size as three Olympic swimming pools. A number of new developments will be revealed in exciting shows talking place in two large domes situated within the stand. Nakheel will also unveil a 13 metre-long scale model of Dubai with an updated show, detailing the role the waterfront has played in the growth of Dubai and the major role Nakheel has played in this.
Each of Nakheel’s waterfront projects will be displayed at the exhibition, including the latest addition to Nakheel’s diverse portfolio of projects, Dubai Promenade. A model of the recently launched waterfront community is set to be revealed, which will allow visitors to see how Dubai Promenade will create a virtual peninsula along the emirate’s shoreline anchored by a spectacular five-star wheel-shaped hotel.

mole January 16th, 2008, 03:00 PM "One of the few buildings in the world with double decker lifts"
er, hardly.
Double decker lifts have been around since the nineteenth century, when they were installed in the Eiffel tower in Paris;
also:
8 Shenton Way in Singapore
American International Building in New York
Aon Center in Chicago
Broadgate Tower in London (under construction)
Burj Dubai
C. D. Howe Building / 240 Sparks Street in Ottawa
Citigroup Center in New York
First Canadian Place in Toronto
International Finance Centre in Hong Kong
Menara Telekom in Kuala Lumpur
Midland Square in Nagoya
One Bell Center in Saint Louis
One Nationwide Plaza in Columbus
Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur
Republic Plaza in Singapore
Roppongi Hills Mori Tower in Tokyo
Sears Tower in Chicago
Statue of Liberty in New York
Stratosphere Tower in Las Vegas
Sun Hung Kai Center in Hong Kong
Sydney Tower in Sydney
Taipei 101 in Taipei, Taiwan
The Concourse, Beach Road, Singapore
Time-Life Building, Chicago, Illinois
Tower 42, London
388 Greenwich Street in New York
Scotia Plaza in Toronto
Grosvenor Place in Sydney
201 Elizabeth St Sydney, (formerly the Pacific Power building)
Torre Picasso in Madrid
Twin Towers complex in Chatswood, Australia
etc etc

exactly my point
hence "etc etc"
nezzybaby January 16th, 2008, 10:16 PM ^actually i think you have completely different points, millions upon millions of buildings have SINGLE storey lifts. 30 listed, possibly 100 or 200 total with double decker, makes them rare. So one of the few buildings with double decker lifts is relatively accurate.

James R. Hawkwood January 17th, 2008, 12:30 PM Hey look at the colour of the lake, it's much more natural now that the rains have begun
yeah, the only thing it needed was some maturing from nature (sand layer at the bottom, fresh water from rain)
Cheers

BlackSmith! January 17th, 2008, 07:18 PM Second steel floor looks like halfdone:) And the other crane has selfclimbing module now, they will probably use both cranes to speed up the construction.

Manal Shaheen, Director, Sales, Marketing and Customer Services, said: “Nakheel is thrilled to play such a major role in the first ever TDIM exhibition. As the creator of some of the world’s most iconic developments, TDIM provides a perfect opportunity to showcase our most visionary projects, such as The Palm Jumeirah and The World, but also the exciting new waterfront projects that we are launching this month. The Nakheel stand is the largest that we have ever created in our history and will feature some truly spectacular attractions.”

Bender January 17th, 2008, 09:42 PM I am kind of disappointed by the current pace of construction on top. I would have thought the steel part would be quicker.

the sock January 17th, 2008, 11:13 PM fantastic pics.
CrazyDave January 17th, 2008, 11:56 PM There's something odd about the winglet in Imre's Photo of the Top of the concrete. It looks like there is one; Concrete winglet and one Steel winglet both at the same level. As that what it is?
helghast January 18th, 2008, 01:03 AM really borded, so i just used paint.

1+2=3 January 18th, 2008, 10:03 AM 598,5 meters, so they still didnt break through the 600 meter-mark. And then there are still the 700 en the 800 meters to reach. Incredible when you imagine it.
CULWULLA January 18th, 2008, 10:45 AM ^its 613m above its foundation slab. this is where it should be measured from but it aint.
jacekfreeman January 18th, 2008, 10:50 AM ^its 613m above its foundation slab. this is where it should be measured from but it aint.
How about the final height? From where it will be measured? these 819m are counted from foundation slab? If not, it won't actually have 819m but approx. 834m?
