HELPING mother earth!?!? i hope youre joking.

sure planting a couple thousand trees is nice (in an insignificant way), but the dubai palm islands have destroyed the marine ecosystem. god knows how much sediment they turned up building them, which gets caught in the regional currents...

lets just stick to saying dubai is a fantastic example of human capability - the burj looks sweet!

I've got to agree here. Not to mention the fact that the majority of the water used to irrigate these massive swaths of desert is in fact desalinated at much capital and energy expense! Dubai in NO WAY helps mother earth!

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think they use water that has already been used by people so that there's no need to go through the desalination process again. Obviously it'd have to be cleaned but I don't think they desalinate water for watering plants.

It's funny how none of the people bickering back-and-forth over the environmental/water usage in Dubai have provided one credible source to support their viewpoints.

Here's one: http://www.newsweek.com/id/143689

In Dubai, entertainment trumps the environment everywhere you turn, imitating it and reconstituting it. On the inland edge of Dubai a stupendous theme park and resort complex now under construction advertises itself as 186 million square meters "encompassing the entire spectrum of human experience." A promotional video calls it "a fantasy land set right in the heart of the desert." Yet there's going to be water everywhere: seawater made potable by enormous oil- and gas-burning plants that already have an installed capacity of 1.26 billion liters a day.

For watering and gardening the landscaped areas, is used ONLY treated sewage water.

Desalinated water is used for the tap water (not drinkable) and for the huge aluminum swelter complex (DUBAL), which disposable water is then treated and bottled as drinkable water for the masses (from 2L PET bottles to mostly 19L containers for the water coolers). Of course there is also natural mineral spring water (Masafi) consumed in mass by the people in 0.5L and 1.5L PET bottles.

Great picture! But as buildmilehightower already said, how can this pic possibly not be photoshopped? A camera can only over- or underexpose. Then its either too dark or too white. There's no way to just take a picture like this. I reckon much HDR effort has been put into it or at least a lot of changes to contrast and saturation. Not that I want to put it down, setting this up requires quite some experience with the software and still it takes alot of effort on the computer to come up with something brilliant like this :cheers2:

Dubai has the potential to have the best skyline in the world although areas such as Shanghai and many other chinese cities still have some space to fit some nice buildings in.
But the American cities are pretty much stalled; the new WTC towers in NY are coming up where old ones were and Chicago found an obscure area for its spire.
I think that if Americans want to be in the competition, they should learn from dubai and build cities from scratch although, US is not an oil rich nation so that could be a problem.

It's been a while since we had some good close ups of the top. I wonder if any steel work has been done ? Or any more of the small half wings been put up ?

Cladding is moving along albeit slowly. The office annex is the only thing we can see progress on at a reasonable pace.

We need some interior shots via site visits as I'm sure great progress is being made in there.

The exterior stuff and the crane disassembly proceedure will have to be done in the next 5 months - before the soft opening on 09 09 09 I would think.

There was no real marine eco system because all sandy beaches mean the under water world is like a desert aswell. Actually, the artificial reefs / wave barriers are huge improvements. Sand sediment fallout is really local, to heavy to be carried by currents.

I would assume that there would be some kind of sliding safety rope that attaches to the centre of the ladder, and also, how high does it look like it is to the mesh floor, because the photo was probably taken from the one below it, and it looks like there could be about 6m, or 20 ft, up to it.
Edit: actually it does look like it could be more than that, based on the steps

Hi all.

Wow - great shot Imre. More More More

It looks like the shot is taken inside the 2.1m. dia. pinnacle pipe from a lower tier where the pipe is inside the steel structure of the spire. The pipe starts in tier 20 (section 20B) and is only considered the pinnacle starting at tier 27. I don't think the shot is up in the pinnacle for 3 reasons :
1 - I don't see any transitions to a smaller diameter.
2 - The ladders in the pinnacle only go from tier to tier as there is a grate landing at each tier.
3 - The ladders face 120 degrees away from the last and next ladder.

When OTR gave us those great shots of a part of the pinnacle laying on the podium waiting to be hoisted up, we could see a ladder inside and the support for a lower ladder that faced differently by one third of the circular pipe.

The pic exif says 09 01 28 so it is after top out (the pinnacle is up there). The light we see up higher must be from the hatches with no doors on them (or open doors).

I agree that it does look like a long ladder climb to the grating above. The one way rail for a sliding lanyard attachment can be seen in the middle of the ladders so there is some thought of safety.

Let me repeat - great shot Imre - keep 'em coming.

Hi all.

Fury, there will be no small wing to be put up. They have completed the "cladding" of the spire on the crane facing side all the way down to the base of that teer.

Change of plans ... ?

Hi Altin.

Yes I realize the small wing and 2 small half wings are completed on tier 23. I was referring to the 2 small half wings of tier 22. They are 19.2 meters high and are on the North side of the pinnacle pipe. I have shown them in this print. I call them half wings for lack of a better term - they are each "half" of a small wing ...

http://g.imagehost.org/0065/56_Tier_23_Start.jpg (http://g.imagehost.org/download/0065/56_Tier_23_Start)

The crane is at the bottom of the print as is the second larger wing that still has 2 sections to be added to yet.

Hi Imre.

Another great shot. The fact that it is from the same section as the base of the pinnacle pipe tells me the pic from yesterday was also taken from this section. As I posted yesterday the shot inside the pinnacle pipe was taken from much lower than tier 27.

Hi Omar.

Nice shot.

At the end of June '08 the top of the BD was at section 19B and the top of that is 662.5 meters. Your shot was not from the top of the steel work as there was no concrete up there at the highest sections at that time. The 719 written on the concrete must mean something else. Your shot is most likely from a concrete slab lower down in the steel section or higher up in the concrete section of the structure.

I'm not trying to be an asshole - just stating the facts. As I said it is a nice shot and I like many wish we could go on a site visit of the BD.

The original - the only time I've ever done any post-processing was when I stitched 8 shots together to make my monster pic of the Burj (incidentally, if anyone's going to Gulf Print next week, do pop down to the Canon stand - they're hoping to have a 40 foot tall print of my Burj Dubai photo on display :) ).

Lens was a Canon 24-104L f4.0.

i was reading my book today and i came across something i didnt see before.
it said the focus on the height was such that at one point, smith says, he and Robert booth, executive director of EMAAR, Alabbar's company, discussed the possibility of a hydraulically controlled spire that could be raised in case some other developer decided to, well, trump Alabbar with a taller building. wouldnt that be cool to have a hydraulically controlled spire  but what they didnt think of was, once its T/O the CTBUH would only count what was the originally offical height. so i would say it would be pointless to have a hydraulically controlled spire.

Fury
April 5th, 2009, 01:33 AM
Hi all.

Good thought Helghast. That must be where many reporters got confused with a telescopic pinnacle verses a jacked into position pinnacle.

I labelled 2 shots to illustrate the small wings of tiers 22 and 23. The shots are from Imre and AltinD who both continue to update us with great pics.

I didn't label the larger wing of tier 23 or the larger wing of tier 22 that is already erected.

The top 9.6m. of tier 22 half wings is up there now. Once they erect the 2 sections left of the second larger wing of tier 22 and the bottom half of the half wings, there is only cladding and roofing (of the terraces) left to do.

Once that is done the crane disassembly proceedure can commence.

Almost anything now days would fit in a 19" rack and go up internally. Unless they want to cover Abu Dhabi there's no need for a half mile tall, high powered transmitting antenna.

Thats some nice stuff Altin.

Looks like 6 levels is what the office annex addition is going to be. The columns don't stick up above the top beams that are going to be the roof, like they did above the previous steel levels.

In the shots of the base the cladding looks cleaner and really shiny. Perhaps the heavy rains washed them some. It gives a some idea of what it is going to look like after it is cleaned......

QUOTE]

I read somewhere that the longest elevator shaft in the world is actually in the Internation Commerce Center (ICC). One elevator shaft in the ICC extends all 118 floors. Though the 124 story elevator shaft to the Burj Dubai observation floor would seem taller, the ICC floors are all office floors which tend to be taller than hotel and residential floors found below the Burj Dubai observation deck. So the 118th floor of the ICC is taller thant he 124th of the Burj Dubai.

If you were at the base of the shaft and the cable snapped a couple of metres above your head you may be OK; if a few hundred metres of cable came whipping and snapping down the shaft on top of you then you'd be mincemeat.

Speaking of the Observatory Deck on the 124th floor, the access area it will be inside the Dubai Mall, in the Food Court Area and from there it will be connected to the tower from an underground tunnel. Considering the distance I don't know if they will have peoples movers or moving walkways.

Also the area inside the Mall where they are working is big so probably souvenir shops will be there as well, and of course the security scanning.

When I first climbed the CN Tower in 2003 they had this bomb sniffing air blowing machines type of scanners. I'm sure similar and even more advanced ones will be installed here.

All in all it seams that everything related to the Observatory deck would be totally isolated from the rest of the tower, for security reasons of course.

Everything about this tower is unusual (well you get what i mean)

No, because the tower is not what you call accessible friendly, plus signs will be all over the palce.

Which Mall entry? As compared to which lobby entrance of the tower? You know the difference can be several hundreds of meters

I doub't anyone will have that option.

As for the marathon, they already do one yearly of climbing the stairs of Emirates Office Tower so it is very likely to happen.

You gotta love these marathons (it's a sport that is real fun to watch). That and it tests the limits as to how far man can go as the buildings go higher and higher.

I thought that was a little unusual as well at first.. but it makes perfect sense in the end. If I had spent all that money for a condo -or- spent all the money for a night in the Armani Hotel -or- if I was paying all that rent for an office in the clouds; I wouldnt want to see thousands of befuddled tourists gawking and gazing and in my way all the time when Im doing my daily business in that building! Im just surprised that the access to the obs deck would be all the way in the mall... :)

Like Altin said, they probably will have some people-movers like what you see in major airports and some amusement parks with all kinds of souvenir/gift shops and possibly some museums lined along the way.

If things get better and business moves again, I would be able to book hotel and flight plans sometime perhaps by next summer - There will definitely be some SSC and SSP'ers that will be making the trip and it would be nice to make an attempt to all go at a common time so we could vist the Burj and see the rest of Dubai in a group - It would be nice to meet some of the people that I've been conversing with on and off for the past 5 years watching this monster tower materialize.

Hi all.

Hey Ember - no the 2 sections have not been erected yet.

The observation access in the mall is not the only access point unless they have revised the plans yet again.

The elevator lobby for the observation deck is on the ground level on the podium zone A side - facing 120 degrees and the fountain. The ground level is also the entrance to the residence lobby that faces podium zone B or 240 degrees. The entrance faces 240 degrees. It looks to me that one can walk across the residence lobby through some doors to the observation elevator lobby.

It is cool that there will be a tunnel from the mall for access too.

Does anyone know what is included in the September "soft opening" ?

As one can see in any of the evening pictures shown recently, there are a few lights seen in the bottom floors in the hotel area, but hardly any at all above the first mech. levels. Either the workers are good at turning off the lights, or the state of the finishing is still very elementary in most of these areas.

We have not seen or heard of any evidence of what is going on inside. We have seen the outdoor construction lifts gone, but have these just been moved inside into the permanent shafts ?

At this point, I'd be surprised if 09 09 09 consists of any more than a floor of hotel rooms and a coffee shop, if it happens then at all.

Thanks for any information that becomes available.

september 9 is still five months away tomorrow or today depending on where your reading this. five months is plenty of time to finish the cladding and build out the the rest of the building. all the habitual floors have cladding so interior work is being performed, while the upper floors can be prepped after the soft opening.
