Here is a better render of the concrete to steel transition. That one above that i posted is reduced vertically to fit in the power point presentation.

FTL Beach Bum and Fury,

I'm a bit confused. Those steel braces that FTL Beach Bum pointed out are certainly the beginning of the steel structure, but it does not match the rendering Fury posted. Here's what I'm talking about:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2310/2066102411_514baf5593_o.jpg

Is the actual steel structure going to be erected slightly differently than the rendering?

Hi jlh630.

The side facing us in the render is the next setback. It faces approx. 60 degrees and the Dubai mall. The side facing us in the pic is at approx. 300 degrees. I haven't seen a pic showing us the setback side without the formwork yet.

November 26th, 2007, 11:12 PM
Ah, thanks Fury that makes perfect sense. I forgot that there was a setback at the start of the steel structure. So those steel braces we see in the pictures are are on the backside of the steel structure in the rendering? With the exception of this one that we can see?

After understanding how the steel structure will be attached, I've managed to create a clear representation relating the photo taken by AltinD with the rendering supplied by Fury.

I must admit that this is a huge tower and big development, but honestly I don't see the significance of this tower or any tower in Dubai. The city is basically a desert that wants attention, so it uses oil money to build large towers that, in my opinion, will basically be fairly empty most of the time. Burj Dubai doesn't show economic growth the way some towers such as WFC in Shanghai or Freedom Tower in New York. I just don't get why people are so hyped about a really tall piece of glass which has, really, no meaning.

You'll understand the significance when Dubai shows the value of economic diversification.

The economic model in the Middle East is almost the reverse of that of Asia; it makes sense that the course of development would be reversed as well.

Wow, you can see how few floors hold up the crane. It's only held by about 3 floors!
Also you can see how now the crane is out of the lift core and on real floors that they have to fill the concrete floor in after the crane has been jacked up!
May I also add the workers have big balls to be working on that scaffolding on the edge of that concrete making those little triangles that stick out of the core!! Dam!
Not to start a flamewar again... but ... if those guys are making $100 a month they have every right to protest! You couldn't pay me to walk out on that scaffolding, balanced on that tiny triangle, sitting on 3 day old concrete 550m / 150+ stories up! Holy sh$@
I only hope that being the most prestigious building in Dubai that they are getting better wages than some of the figures we hear mentioned.

This has been the case for WEEKS now. Browse some old fotos. There are even some where you can see the floors with the hole several floors under the towercrane.

PS: This triangles are curious for me too. I wonder how much weight you can put on them before they fall off the core. It really looks so tiny... and i cant see how its really ankered to the core.

I bet that the crane is attached to and supported by the interior walls. Those floors won't be able to withstand the forces, the holes are made just to give room to the crane mast.

After two years lurking on this site I finally signed up to make my maiden post! I want to thank everyone for their contributions, it has kept me amused, informed and fascinated.

I have been fortunate to visit this site three times in the last 15 months, and this is a truly impressive construction. It is possible as a tourist to take photos just outside the gate, and there I would estimate you are within 100 metres of the core. Any closer and you cannot appreciate the bulk and height.

The best view of this tower I reckon is from SZR, heading East, just before the junction off to the site. The impact of the other skyscrapers, and this one is awesome. There is a sense similar to standing close to very high cliffs, buildings just soar away, all around. And BD looks impossibly high now.

Two things surprised me last time I visited (maybe 6 weeks ago). Just how dusty and dirty everything looked, it really needs a good clean. But that is offset by the brilliance of the reflected sunlight off the panels. The building seems like a gemstone.

I thought I read a while back that there was a long gap between the completion of the concrete and the rising of the steel. Seem to remember it was a good number of months rather than weeks.

I quoted the 6 month wait for the installation of metal bracing on the roof of the 155th floor. However, considering that the 155 Mezzanine floor is mechanical one, that might very well be just for the installation of the machineries and probably not related to the steel structure at all.

True you can get as close as 100 meters from the building, but you can get as close to the WTC in NYC as well, and that was the point. As for the dust and dirt, it's normal that it will be, like any other construction site.

And BTW welcome to the forum.

There are no tourists on site. You can't go nearer to Burj Dubai then you can to Freedm Tower.

All the pictures are taken outside the site perimeter and often from a distance of up to 1 mile (using x12 Optical zoom)

are you sure, i mean not to critisize, but im sure ive seen pictures
with like busloads of tourists getting off the bus right on the site.

Sterling photographic work again Imre, with good attention to the little bits and pieces that give a good account of the engineering behind this landmark building. I would imagine that as the cladding proceeds the numbers on site will peak as the fit out proceeds following the cladding. Did you get a good impression of how much of the HVAC and Electrical has been installed?

Absolutely stunning Imre. One of your best updates ever, we cannot thank you enough.

I do have to ask you though, what is the process involved for being allowed a visit inside the tower? I ask because I am planning a trip for the summer of 2008 which will include a stop in Dubai (I've never been). As a student of civil engineering and pre-architecture, it would be a once in a lifetime opportunity to witness in person the construction of the world's tallest structure. I know they don't let just anyone walk in there, which is why I'm asking you. I'll do whatever it takes, but if there's any chance I have of seeing this monster from the inside before it opens, I'd really appreciate any information you can give.

I never considered that looking up from one of the setbacks would only allow you to see the top of the next setback...it's crazy how it hides the top of the tower!

I can't believe they've already almost finished a model apartment, looks beautiful. One day I'm buying a unit.

OH.... MY GOD!!!

Thats by far the best and must stunning POST i've ever seen... Thanks you so much for contributing... just unbelievable... and the height on the pics is awesome... and thats just half way up... WAHHH!!!!

Those pictures were taken on the ocasion of topping out of the concrete work by DOKA. I think his friends might work for HYDER (consultant) so I doubt he will have that picture in bigger size ... but he can ask him if he had a camera with him and if he took other pictures and of course for some insider infos.

Well... if he was there... maybe he knows somebody... who knows somebody... and so you can get sth. I made the expericence in the past that you just have to ask and make some moves to get cool things working.

But yah... maybe he has taken some pics on the top himself... Well everybody has a mobile with camera today... so if i wasnt told not too i'd take picture after picture... and by any chance he had a real camera with him..

So please just ask, there is nothing to loose by asking!!

THX AGAIN IMRE!!!

:lol::lol::lol::lol:

PS: Is there really a gab between the cladding and the wall so you can look down to other floors??? How are they gonna stuff it?

And what will be on the location of these steelbars???

I know this really isn't the right place to post this, but all the Dubai fans in the world section come here so I hope you can bear with me because I am sure some of you would like to see this image.

This image is from GEOEYE, taken on November 21, 2007. I am sorry about the seams in the image, due to curvature of the earth and distortion, I could not align the images perfectly.

Really fantastic, those updates! Although I'm studying Construction Technology I still learn more and more by reading and watching this building grow!

I have a question for Imre. Is it (part of) your job to make all those pics and how do you manage to get access to building sites like this one?? 1.5 years ago I've been on the site and on the 14th floor with a group of students of my university, but it's sooo difficult to manage to get a visit!

Watching this little concrete 'top' of the building, I cant wait to see a steel structure of perhaps 200 meters rise on it :D :D

I never considered that looking up from one of the setbacks would only allow you to see the top of the next setback...it's crazy how it hides the top of the tower!

I can't believe they've already almost finished a model apartment, looks beautiful. One day I'm buying a unit.

That's a good point. One of the impressive parts of having the public observation deck in the middle of the building was that you can look up and see another 400m. That is simply not going to be the case!

Imre - awesome pictures. I too am wondering if this is actually your job. Paid to excite the world about BD - imagine getting paid for that!

Perhaps from a certain angle near the core of the tower you'd be able to see the top...I'm not sure though. Guess I'll just have to go find out for myself.

The glass is REFLECTIVE.

Wrong, lighter glass = more heat penetrating inside = higher A/C bill. It's not much in the colour then in IR and UV proof coating of the glass that reflect and/or block them and the heat as well.

Where do they import all that glass from????? wow some1 is in business hu!?

I suppose you already know, but the glass' ability to isolate is not a mere light/dark scale and the stuff you said. It's a combination of reflectiveness, layers and the materials ability to not lead heat. It's true that the darker glass absorbs more light initially, but ofcourse you are right about that other stuff.

The burj dubai cladding is so reflective so I'd persume that looking from the sky it'd look dark or perhaps sandy, but on a sunny day it'll always look light blue. Not to mention the night where it will look imposing and black

Some of the concrete being laid at level 150-155 looks as if there is going to be no room for anything except a broom closet between core and window panel.

I wonder if they will have rules about what you can place near windows, in case it makes "looking in" a disappointment (especially when the lights are on inside)

I have seen any number of skyscrapers made to look tacky because people use the windows as walls, especially putting filing cabinets up against them.

are they planning to do just one major parking structure or two smaller ones for each , and plus above ground or below ground?

Burj Dubai will have a parking complex below ground, but not directly under the tower; sort of under the extensions at the bottom. The mall will afaik also have under-ground parking right under it. Only 10.000 places is I am not mistaken.

Yes, I believe that it will be noticeable. It is in the rendering:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2025/2074296227_40203bee57_o.jpg

You can clearly see the 2 observation deck levels being higher than the surrounding floors.

Also, I believe someone mentioned a few days ago that they would like to see the concrete section of the structure completely finished (wings and all), and let the cladding catch up before the steel structure is started. It seems that this is in fact what they are doing.

It doesn't bother me. Sure it's noticeable to the trained eye, but I really don't think it detracts much (if anything) from the overall appearance of the tower.

Lower ellipse is observation deck.

Hi all.

The top level of every tier is taller. I think the cladding will be the height of the level; 3.2, 3.5, 3.7, 4.0, 4.3, 4.8, 5.3, or 6.0 meters.

On another note I think this is the crane they will use for the steel section.

http://aycu18.webshots.com/image/36857/2000163594791432040_rs.jpg (http://allyoucanupload.webshots.com/v/2000163594791432040)

This is the side it will be on and the supports look the same. I think once they start on the steel they will mount a support at the top of the concrete. Later they will put a support higher up ( on the steel ) and raise the base of the crane so it looks like this.

http://aycu35.webshots.com/image/35554/2004800937359445764_rs.jpg (http://allyoucanupload.webshots.com/v/2004800937359445764)

Such a great time for us scraper lovers. The pics and info for this and other great structures around the world is awesome. The Burj started just a touch early to see it start from the first perverbial shovel full of earth. For the last 2 years and from now on we (will) see many projects from the beginning - The Pentominium, Al Burj, Chicago Spire, Guangzhou TV Tower, The Bow in Calgary, Etc. None are as interesting in both complexity, and elegence in design as the Burj Dubai. I think it is also responsible for starting the inflo of pics and info on the net because of it's unbelievable height.

Have a good day all.

it's very hot there, they should use darker glass instead of clear glass.

what looks cheap about it? it looks great to me, they're using high quality material. The glass does have some sort of reflective coating on it. Article on SOM's engineer for the BD:

Engineer Bill Baker Is the King of Superstable 150-Story Structures

http://www.wired.com/culture/design/magazine/15-12/mf_baker

excerpt:
Baker's current slate of supertalls — towers that exceed 1,000 feet — is unmatched by any engineer in history. It surpasses even SOM's own record from the late '60s and early '70s, when the firm built the 1,450-foot-tall Sears Tower and the 1,127-foot-tall John Hancock Center within a few years (and 2 miles) of each other. There's the Crown here in Las Vegas; the 1,361-foot Trump International Hotel and Tower in Chicago; the 1,820-foot Lotte Super Tower in Seoul, to be completed in 2012; and the queen of them all, the Burj Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. It's a fantastic spike of a building — soon to be the most desirable address in the Middle East, already the tallest structure of any kind and still rising by a floor every three days to a top-secret height of at least 2,500 feet — more than double the size of the Empire State.

Does anyone know what the purpose of all that scaffolding and large platform around one of the cranes at the top of the building is? Is it to build a support system for that crane like they did for the other one? Will they be keeping two cranes going at the top?

thanks!

It looks like they are trying to make a paradise out of the desert. Does anyone know how they manage to supply with water all these buildings and suburbs that Dubai encompass. Desalinisation or something?
When construction of steel part of the tower can be expected? They reached this height long time ago as well as I know.
