Article on SOM's engineer for the BD:

Engineer Bill Baker Is the King of Superstable 150-Story Structures

http://www.wired.com/culture/design/magazine/15-12/mf_baker

excerpt:
Baker's current slate of supertalls — towers that exceed 1,000 feet — is unmatched by any engineer in history. It surpasses even SOM's own record from the late '60s and early '70s, when the firm built the 1,450-foot-tall Sears Tower and the 1,127-foot-tall John Hancock Center within a few years (and 2 miles) of each other. There's the Crown here in Las Vegas; the 1,361-foot Trump International Hotel and Tower in Chicago; the 1,820-foot Lotte Super Tower in Seoul, to be completed in 2012; and the queen of them all, the Burj Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. It's a fantastic spike of a building — soon to be the most desirable address in the Middle East, already the tallest structure of any kind and still rising by a floor every three days to a top-secret height of at least 2,500 feet — more than double the size of the Empire State.

no address in the middle east is desirable its TFH!

Yep. Noticed the same too. The spire seems to start exactly as planned.

there is no steel part in that one area. so i'm assuming that's were the tier is going to be

Hi all.

Yes - looks like they are sticking to the plan. The next setback on level 156 - tier 16 faces approx. 60 degrees and the dubai mall.

Nice update Imre as always.

well the reason behind that is because the actual height is a well kept secret. but plans show it at a height of 818m's high. other's show 808m, and 705m. but those were the old designs. but the height may go higher next year

tnx for a prompt answer! so according to this, we shall wait and see, right? if we take everything into account what has been done in dubai until present day, and what are the plans for the future, i would be quite surprised if they don’t try to make this tower even higher. what amazes me the most is how much they are willing to spend just to make something that no one else has.

Hi all.

Yes Cul - I agree they will not be deviating from the plan at this point. I was just commenting on others' hopes for changes for a taller structure. They did alter the plan once they got above level 107 and that is not the only change in the plan. :okay:

Here is some more from the Skyscraper Museum that I've had for 6 months - I thought everyone knew about the museum. :)

This diagram is unique.. it shows the lift shafts color coded, and corresponding to the lifts shown on the floor plan.. this is the first time I have seen this. It makes it clear which lifts top out at what floor.

So do all of the lifts reside in the central core, or are there any low rise ones perhaps in the wings?

Oh, and I personally think it will be from 800-1100 sq ft at the 700m range. I think that there will be some private Emaar state of the art office spaces in this range up to floor 180? In that case, there is probably more elevators that arent shown in the diagram (there certainly isnt 50 of them there!). I believe that there will be probably 1 lift that will go up to almost the tip of the spire...

http://www.wired.com/culture/design/magazine/15-12/mf_baker

Great read, thanks for the link!

Here's a bit more of the article:
The initial scheme was for a building of about 1,800 feet, 317 feet taller than the Petronas Towers. Yet the clients made a request: Overengineer the foundation, just in case we change our minds. Which the clients did. Repeatedly. On trip after trip to Dubai — even after a hole was dug and giant caissons were set 150 feet into the sand, even after the building began to rise, a floor every three days, into the desert haze — the SOM team kept getting the same request: Can you make it taller? They worked the problem in the wind tunnel, adding fins around the perimeter (like dimples on a golf ball) to create surface turbulence and reduce the lateral forces on the building. They worked the problem with concrete specialists, engineering a high-strength mix that could be pumped into the sky, like a giant drip-castle. But one thing needed no tweaking: the buttressed core. It seemed to permit limitless growth.

That's good. I was looking at the videos that Imre posted, looks like there's a terrace on the top of every tier, there's holes on the cladding at the end of the wings on podium 3, I take it they are for supports to hold up a glass railing of some kind so that nobody falls off lol. I've finished all the floors with cladding on the model I'm making, I'm only unsure about the railings on the terraces and what the mechanical cladding is like (hoping this with be on the real building soon). I'm hoping to finish some renders by the end of the year and they will certainly be the most accurate in terms of size and looks (thanks to you!), will post AutoCAD pics soon followed by the 3D Max ones hopefully....

Those videos with Mohammed Ali Al Abaar were really good. Thanks Imre

It Kind of takes you by surprise that almost all Dubai leaders are so effective in expressing themselves in the english language. I remember watching some Saudi royalties that were impressive as well but they were educated in the West. I wonder what was the case with him.

Hi all.

Hey helghast - I don't have any actual tier 22 prints - but ...
Here is the start of tier 23. It shows the terrace or roof of tier 22. So this print is the shape of tier 22 not counting the start which has tier 21 terrace. If you get what I mean - tier 22 has 2 wings. Those wings are approx 6 meters deep and wide and the center circle ( the lower/internal/unseen from the exterior part of the pinnacle ) is 2.1 meters in diameter.

I just get the idea that all these leaders are pretty smart. How old is this guy anyway? He does not seem like a slacker and I love that he drives his own car instead of getting chauffeured like most people think he would be. He seems to know how to live life.

Everyone is West educated. Al Abbar graduated from University Of Seattle. He recently returned for a a speach overthere and received some kind of award or maybe it was a second degree ... can't remember.

Hi all

Here are some pics of the Burj Dubai Model I'm making, It has been made using AutoCAD. I have shown different views of it plus the plans of each tier and podium which will hopefully let people understand how the design works and also how it changes as it goes up. Looking at the model, 819 metres (including aircraft beacons) is a very nicely proportionate height, but it could be made higher I think without too much trouble. :)

guys, just a question. maybe you already said this, but why are going so slow the works at the base?

thanky you

December 4th, 2007, 03:36 PM
^^ Becouse building and completing the upper part is more important then loosing time doing something that not only doesn't help at all the overall progress of the tower but might even slow the work down by restricting access and material storagge.

Hello to everyone, first of all - I would like to thank all the people contributing to this forum, no words can describe my admiration for Emirates culture and achievements, I just hope it will continue forever.

Now

I know that this is not the place to ask such a questions, the reason why I'm breaking this rule is that most of the pro's are hanging out here. Now, the question :

How expensive (approx.) it is to build & maintain, let's say, 160m tall building?

Any help much appreciated.

regarding this lake in front of the burj...i heard that all buildings with pools in dubai have some sort of special cooling system due to extremely high temperatures during the summer. people told me that unless this cooling systems are turned on, temperature of water in the pools reaches 45 degrees?
i think that same thing can be applied for these lakes as well.
so....is this only a nice thing for an eye or purpose of this lakes is to, lets say, modify temperature to the certain level around them

Yeah, you've got really important buildings flanking a big awful looking swimming pool. I wonder what the head of Emaar thinks of the Burj Dubai Swimming Pool. I wonder if it's chlorinated because that would be awful. :(

Don't worry to much about the lake, it's only 50% filled. The water will probably look more blue when they rise the water level. Besides that, the water is colored green because of the green sheeting. After a dust storm there will be enough mud in the water to cover that sheeting and the hideous color will turn into a normal color.

I hope someone is reconsidering the color of the "lake" around the Burj Dubai complex. It looks tacky, in my opinion. Pehaps a bluer color would look better. I like the deep blue color of the ocean as seen from space or the blue tinted waters of a mountain lake reflecting a clear sky. Those would be nice colors.

Otherwise, you've got a beautiful $20billion project ruined by a thousand gallons of paint.

I agree can you imagine a natural lake there? With all sorts of organic matter?

I think the reason people might not be happy with it is because it doesn't appear as deep, and grand as natural lakes. When your right next to a natural lake more often than not it really gives you that "waterfront" feeling. Maybe they should rename it to Burj Pond?

or we can wait till the final product and see if it really gives off that "waterfront" feeling.

i totally agree. I don't think this is the final stage of the lake. Watching those videos with the head of Emaar talking, he seems like a very stylish guy who needs everything to be perfect. This is Dubai's Big project. The real show stopper that will be the new, fresh face of Dubai. Emaar would want to make this development perfect with fine finishes. i'm sure in the end, the lake will look absolutely gorgeous. Also the final appearance of the whole place has to please the Sheik, and all workers, managers and contractors want to do exactly that. Cause if aint happy, then he could ask to completely redo some areas to suit his liking. :bash:

BTW, great photo updates Imre and Fury!! Keep up the great work and thankyou for taking the time to take the pictures and share it with all of us here at skyscraper community and especially to all those here who aren't living in dubai. Your work is truly appreciated.

The point of an artificial lake is to make it look real and natural. When you look at artificial lakes at golf courses, new neighborhoods or man-made reservoirs they almost look natural. Not like a swimming pool.

Looks to me like they are going to use both cranes for the steel section, at least for now. the scaffoloding around one of them looks to me like it could be another one of those attatchements to the tower and there is still alot of it in the lower levels, so if it gets hoisted up it would be very high.

And even better in 6-10 years time, when Business Bay is fully complete with beautiful tall towers to complement the Burj Dubai. ATM, no great tower (maybe for the exception of the Burj Hotel), really complements the Burj Dubai, and being so tall it needs other supertalls around it to make it look majestic rather than a tall building in the middle of nowhere.

It doesn't look like much floor space on those top floors but I would love to have an office or an apartment in the 150's. people have been saying that even when it was 450m, were it looked like there was not enough space for it to rise.

Here's a quick diagram I made comparing the floor space in the upper levels of the Burj with a relatively tall residential tower under construction in Atlanta, the Mansion. In the Mansion, each floor is a separate unit with plenty of floor space, so I'd imagine the Burj is actually pretty roomy up at that level.

Great comparison - the scale here is so vast it is hard to keep it all in perspective.

Thanks for the comparison. I've been wondering about the width myself since a few people have complained that it's wayyy too thin up on top. The scale of this thing is huge, so from far down on the ground it's going to appear thin, when in fact the floors will be more than livable/workable for a human.

Any specs on the square footage of the floors up top? A 4-5 room apt in Montreal is around 1000 square feet.

December 10th, 2007, 06:52 AM
Are the cranes being used to hoist the cladding?

If yes, then this may explain why both are still being used. In order for the contractor to catch up from the delays to the cladding installation, they may have negotiated and redesigned the construction of the spire.

I recall seeing some leaked documents about quite a sharp exchange of words in the form of letters between the main cladding contractor and the BD project management. These included a request for an extension to the time allocated for cladding installation which were flatly refused with no chance for negotiation. At around this time there were rumours of yet another redesign to the tower, which backs up my hypothesis. :)

They could make a fortune by allowing people to climb to the top. Imagine the feeling of standing on top of the pinnacle with the aircraft beacons, being able to look down on all sides at once.

if they are keeping the two cranes to speed up production makes sense
but isnt there a reasonable mark fro a maximum distance a crane can spam up before being bolted to something.
i mean looking at those cranes the damn high from the building allready
and plus at that height im sure theres some turbulence/gusts etc.

Something tells me we're already seeing the "planned construction crane". The base/support of the currently-elevated one exactly matches that in the virtual diagram posted previously, save for the fact that it's not bolted right to the top of the concrete structure, but a few floors down.

I'm sure they don't see it as life-or-death to get those last few concrete floorings completed where it is, as they can easily be finished off with lift buckets when the time comes. :okay:

As the steel rises, they can bolt onto it...Similar in fashion to a ground-based tower crane...

A while back someone posted those plans for the steel section of burj that included details of the two tower cranes that will climb with the steel....

It even listed climbing details from memory and model numbers which were 380 and 440D's... the cranes that are there now.. they can climb 16 sections before bracing is required...
