cntower August 22nd, 2004, 06:21 PM Baluchistan
Balouchistan has a population of 6,511,358 and an area of 134,000 sq mi (347,000 sq km). It is bounded by Iran on the west, by Afghanistan on the north, and by the Makran coast of the Arabian Sea on the south.
Quetta is the capital; it is connected by railway to the main Indus plains corridor of Pakistan. Lying outside the monsoon zone and with few rivers usable for irrigation, Baluchistan is largely desert basins with inarable hills and mountains. Pastoral nomads who speak languages related to Persian constitute most of the sparse population. Some cotton is raised and processed, and natural gas is exploited.
On the coast there is trade in fish and salt. It was incorporated into the province of West Pakistan in 1955, but returned to full provincial status in 1970. In 1976 the Pakistani central government revoked the authority of local chiefs to administer their own peoples, touching off a popular revolt against the government. Guerrilla fighting between native leaders and government forces continued into the 1980s.

Pakistan's Wild Wild West; barley anyone lives outside in this baren landscape. You'll see many living in small towns or the two major cities of Quetta and Gwadar which could be compared in climate to Arizona and New Mexico

The Hub River plant near Hub Chowki, Balochistan, was built by a consortium of developers as one of the flagship independent power projects in Asia. It can supply over 10% of Pakistan's electric power. The plant has four 323-MW units online in 1997. A consortium of Ansaldo Energia, Mitsui & Co, Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries, and Campenon Bernard built the plant which has IHI boilers and Ansaldo T/G sets. The plant is supplied with fuel oil by a specially built 78-km pipeline and power is delivered to the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) by a 180-km, dual-circuit 500-Kv transmission line.

Sultan August 22nd, 2004, 11:29 PM thats the Gwadar city plan :)
NESPAK designed the city plan, and from the plan we can see that they have adopted the Western grid system for the roads.
cntower August 22nd, 2004, 11:32 PM Something worries me; that landfill.
Sultan August 22nd, 2004, 11:35 PM Something worries me; that landfill.
yeah man. i dont get that either. why would they put a landfill site over there. and thats close to the residential areas too.
but by the way, here in toronto, theres a huge landfill in mississauga close to heartland (shopping centre), but you cant tell its a landfill site, because its covered in green. i hope they do that, or relocate it.
and i think the proposed site of the new airport, beside the shore is much better. rather than behind the city, because that would mean, not a lot of highrises or apartments in that part of the city.
plus, an airport beside the arabian sea would be marvelous, i just hope they built an airport like Dubai over there. it'll attract a lot of airlines.
cntower August 23rd, 2004, 12:12 AM Gwadar will only have a good airport if the CAA brings down the landing fees for airlines; I think we have one of the highest and I can't seem to figure out why? Were hurting ourselves more! I hope they do bring the fees down...
raja X August 23rd, 2004, 10:33 AM beautiful pictures man, but on that main map i dont like the idea of havin that much industrial area man, and right next to what they say is gonnna be nex dubai, hmmm, that dont look so good, industry shud be more inland, like a drive of abt half hour in land.
cntower August 23rd, 2004, 01:57 PM Actually Gwadar really needs a large industrial zone; well lets just say this project ends up working countries from Central Asia won't just pick up there goods from the port and drive it back to there country; much of it will have to be assemebeld here and then shipped by rail, air or road.
This map isn't complete; somebody forgot the scale!
cntower August 23rd, 2004, 06:50 PM What is this "Great Game" I don't really know much about it; someone help please!
Sultan August 26th, 2004, 09:18 PM Balochistan can be made into an ideal tourist spot.
cntower August 26th, 2004, 10:47 PM Our beaches; man oh man what a secret the world dosen't even know........yet!
Pakistan's Coastline could seriously end up like the Gold Coast if things are done properly. I'm really hoping for the best for this region especially!
Sultan August 26th, 2004, 10:52 PM the best thing about the coast is the warm waters of the arabian gulf.
i'm pretty sure the govt will develop the beaches according to international standards. i would like to see the white sand put there.. and palm trees.. that'll be so cool.
anyways.. the West Bay is all for beaches. East Bay is all commercial.

Balochistan is the largest state of Pakistan (Area wise) so it is not fair to link the whole state with terrorism, if the problem is only in few areas bordering Afghanistan & mainly in Quetta outskirts by Afghan Taliban using Afghan Refugee camps & Afghanistan giving hostages to Bugti tribes in its Kandahar province.

Aggressive marketing of tourism opportunities to propel development pace in Baluchistan
Quetta, June 6 (APP): Pragmatic strategy with aggressive marketing of tourism opportunities can help trigger fast pace of development in Baluchistan on social as well as economic fronts.Scores of enchanting sites in Baluchistan offer irresistible baiting to both local and foreign tourists, which however need to be projected through effective initiatives by both public and private sector.
Declaring Year-2007 as `Visit Pakistan Year', Federal Ministry of Tourism has set out ambitious goals to promote tourism nationally and internationally through sponsoring various festivals across the country.
Balochistan, the largest province of Pakistan shares 44% geography of the country having 770 kilometers long the Arabian Sea coastal-line leading to Persian Gulf, is blessed with numerous tourists' attractions due to its historical significance.
The province is the fore-runner of Civilization having the archeological site of Mahargarh 11000 years old in Bolan district which signifies the importance of the province for tourism sector.
The province has international significance for tourism that possesses natural beauty, cultural heritage and ancient civilization. The archeological site of Mahargarh depicts how civil society learnt the way of living and mode of irrigation used at that time in the region. A `Walki-whale' and its skeleton was discovered from this site.
The federal ministry of tourism organized a "Mahargarh Conference" in
April last under the `Visit Pakistan Year' aimed at highlighting the historical
significance of the site. The site not only represents the province, but also the
country, wooing tourists the world over.
Balochistan Chief Minister, Jam Muhammad Yousaf urged at a seminar the government functionaries and people to play their role in preserving the site.
Chairman Archeology Department Peshawar University Dr Muhammad Farooq Swati discussed the ways and means to protect these sites.
Similarly, Balochistan is immensely blessed with numerous tourists' attraction sites. Over 770 kilometers long coastal belt having a unique fascination for tourists. It is pertinent to mention here that Alexander had passed through the coastal belt of Balochistan in 325 BC covering a long trail.
In Balochistan, Juniper forest what experts believe "living fossils" were found in Ziarat valley another tourists site (some 120 kilometers off from Quetta) which covers the approximate area about 2,50,000 acre of land (one of the largest Juniper forest in the globe).
The climate in Ziarat is experienced as extremely cold during winter season. Junipers wear white snowfall from November to March due to which the forest survives and fascinates tourists. Junipers possess immense power to resist against drought.
It is a tree that could live 72,000 years, according to researches of experts. Besides, juniper forests also exist in Loralai, Pishin, Killa Saifullah and Kalat districts of the province covering the approximate area 55,000 acre of land.
Balochistan is enriched and blessed with mineral resources and natural sites. "Mining tourism industry" attracts tourists for visiting coalmines, caves and experiencing long mountainous areas of the province extending from the province to neighbouring country Afghanistan.
Other attractive places which fascinate tourists included Chaman railway tunnel considered to be one of the biggest and oldest tunnel in the world, historical wetland of Band Khushdil Khan in Pishin district, Sibi festival celebrations and Hanna Urak in Quetta valley.
The federal and the provincial governments are making strenuous efforts to promote tourism sector in Balochistan. In this regard the government has launched numerous projects in the province. Balochistan government is spending Rs55 million on construction of Naseer Khan Noori Cultural Complex in Quetta valley aimed at protecting cultural heritages of the province and improving the means of protection of the cultural heritages.
Besides, four other "cultural complexes" are being set up in Ormara, Jiwani, Pasni and Gwadar (coastal belt). Completion of these projects will not only introduce Balochistan's culture and heritage in the region, but also introduce across the globe.
The government has provided Rs1.5 million to district government Bolan to spend on improvement of communication, construction of stairs and ensure other facilities for tourists in Peer Ghaib valley in the district.
The government is also spending Rs3.2 million on renovation of historic Chakar Azam Fort. It is also considering implementation of the proposed project for establishing `chair lift' in Ziarat valley for visitors, besides setting up an `information center' for them.
The federal government has decided to establish Sibi Museum and a `library' at a cost of Rs 90 million in Sibi in order to facilitate tourists coming from other parts of the country and abroad.
The government will also establish "Mahargarh Museum" amounting to Rs 8 million in collaboration with the provincial government aimed at preserving precious historic stones and heritage of Mahargarh and provide information to tourists in the site.
The federal government will also set up an "embroidery center" amounting to Rs five million in Kharan district under special directive of Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz. The objectives behind the establishment of the center are to promote and encourage the art of embroidery, collect, preserve, exhibit and interpret examples of fine cultural embroidery works of the province abroad to attract tourists.
The federal tourism ministry will also organize various programmes under the "Visit Pakistan Year". These included Freedom Jeep Rally from Ormara to Gwadar in August, Jashne-e-Sahil Gwadar in October, and planning to organize jeep rally in Ziarat district, besides reviving `Quetta Festival' which has not been organizing for the last five years aimed at promoting tourism nationally and internationally through sponsoring various festivals in the country.
Tourism sector was neglected in the past, but the present government is making all-out efforts to promote this sector and it will be promoted even at tehsil level in the country. In this connection inter-districts and inter-provincials coordination will be established by tourism ministry.
Besides, "offices of tourism cells" will be set up in every districts of the province, the chairman Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation said.
In spite of these sustained efforts by the federal and the provincial governments, more attention is required to further improve and strengthen the tourism industry in Balochistan. Juniper trees are suffering from various diseases as `fungus', `seed and cone insects', `diabec (top drying of matured trees) and grazing.
The local people cut juniper trees for manufacturing furniture. Now, Juniper trees deserve due attention of the concerned governmental and non-governmental organizations for necessary treatment.
Gwadar port city when gets accomplished, will become the future city of Pakistan as well as of Asian region that links the Central Asian states with other countries through sea water besides attracting tourists worldwide.

Have heard that a train ride from Lahore to Quetta is the easiest way to experience most of Baluchistan. That train is supposed to pass through quite a lot of really scenic spots (and other interesting man-made structures like that tunnel above).

Great pics! Balochistan beaches may have potential to develop some serious surfing and other water sports. If done so, may attract surfing buffs atleast from nearby countries!
Imagine a surfers paradise. Great sunny weather year round, big waves, uncrowded beaches.

Hinglaj Mandir or Nani Mandir is an important Hindu pilgrimage place and situated in Hingol National Park, Balochistan, Pakistan. It is near the peak of one of the mountains of the Makran range. It is approximately 120 km from the Indus River Delta and 20 km from the Arabian Sea. The area is extremely arid and the pilgrimage also called 'Nani ki Haj' by local Muslims takes place before summer. The pilgrimage starts at a place near the Hao river which is 10 km from Karachi.

Pakia January 12th, 2010, 01:18 PM The story of ...
SASSI AND PUNNU
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2581/4234511276_e8b946f585_o.jpg
Sassi , the daughter of a Hindu king of Sind, who on learning at her birth , the prediction by astrologers, that she would marry outside their religion, floats her in a basket. She's found by a washer-man of Bhambore. Sassi grows up to be a great beauty. Punnu, a prince of the Kech fiefdom of Baluchistan while passing thru Bhambore falls madly in love with her. Despite his families refusal to allow him to marry a girl of apparent humble background he marries her . On the wedding nite his brothers intoxicate him and whisk him away. Sassi, overtaken by sleep by the strain of the marriage festivities when awakes is devastated and runs out in search of Punnu. It is said she died in the desert while searching for her beloved. Punnu on recovering, rushes back and finding his Sassi dead dies of grief. They were both buried in a single grave.
The grave is still present in the Las Bela district of Baluchistan.

Bolan Tunnel
Pakia June 29th, 2010, 08:36 PM Built in 1888, been damaged since floods of 1942.
Was considered a major technical achievement of 19th century.

True but sadly the grim ground realiaties in the area are way too difficult, for anyone to even visit this area with relative safety.
Else ideally the train tracks should have been rebuilt to make the area much more accessible and to generate HUGE tourism capital.
As "Cahppar Rift is still considered a freak of nature" as per the detailed article below on this very unique bridghe that survived the horrendous 1930's earthquake of Quetta.

Notice the approaching train in the distant background.
Still existing tunnel, but hardly photographed or probably visited.

You can still see how painstakingly it must have been carved out more than a century ago.

IMO all you need is one Baloch person who can accompany you and then you'd be treated as a guest and noone would dare look you the wrong way.
Almost same true for Pakhtunkwa areas too.
So if you really wanna go, strike a friendship online or otherwise, with some nice person over there and your presence would be highly cherished there, as many people are dying to let others know their points of view over there and love to have a sympathetic ear among them.

siamu maharaj March 10th, 2012, 07:58 AM no worries. i've seen white sand enough. time for some gud ol pakistani sand. :okay:
Not talking about white. Our sand just plain sucks, it's a strange shade of grey that looks dirty. There's golden looking sand in one pic which is fine.
sandiego March 11th, 2012, 10:24 AM i swear this documentary above said there were white sand beaches is gowadar
siamu maharaj March 11th, 2012, 07:06 PM i swear this documentary above said there were white sand beaches is gowadar
Gwadar beach is actually pitch black because it's so dirty and filthy. But the area around it has greay sand. Area near Hangol Park has some golden sand or just straight up desert like sand. But the other two areas I checked out between there and Gwadar had grey sand. But there's no white sand in Pakistan. It's made out of limestone or something and we don't have those kind of structures (don't know the geographical name) around our beaches.
A-TOWN BOY March 11th, 2012, 08:40 PM pakistani rivers do not carry white sand that can be deposited on the beaches.

Don't know what beaches you're referring to, but the ones I saw exactly 2 yrs ago in Ormara, Jeewni & Gwadar were pretty nice & almost pristine. Although the sections of beaches where the boats are built were pretty littered but still sand wasn't black or anything that I could see.

It's not warm, it's hot like hell. Not exactly sexy.
Alexander the Great conquered the world but his army was destroyed by the heat of the Baluchistan desert. It used to be called Gedrosia by the Greeks.
Gedrosia
Gedrosia ( /dʒɨˈdroʊʒə/; Greek: Γεδρωσία) is the hellenized name of an area that corresponds to today's Balochistan. Eastern Balochistan is southwestern province of Pakistan and parts of southwestern and south-central Afghanistan and western Balochistan is divided between Iranian provinces of Hormozgan and Sistan va Baluchestan. The area which is named Gedrosia, in books about Alexander the Great and his successors, runs from the Indus River to the southern edge of the Strait of Hormuz. It is directly to the south of the Iranian countries of Bactria, Arachosia and Drangiana, to the east of the Iranian countries of Persia and Carmania and due west of the Indus River which formed a natural boundary between it and Western India.
Following his army's refusal to continue marching east at the Hyphasis River in 325 BC, Alexander the Great crossed the area after sailing south to the coast of the Indian Ocean on his way back to Babylon. Upon reaching the Ocean, Alexander the Great divided his forces in half, sending half back by sea to Susa under the command of Nearchus. The other half of his army was to accompany him on a march through the Gedrosian desert, inland from the ocean. Throughout the 60 day march through the desert, Alexander lost at least 12,000 soldiers, in addition to countless livestock, camp followers, and most of his baggage train. Some historians say he lost three-quarters of his army to the harsh desert conditions along the way. However, this figure was likely based on exaggerated numbers in his forces prior to the march, which were likely in the range of no less than 30,000 soldiers.
There are two competing theories for the purpose of Alexander the Great's decision to march through the desert rather than along the more hospitable coast. The first argues that this was an attempt to punish his men for their refusal to continue eastward at the Hyphasis River. The other argues that Alexander was attempting to imitate and succeed in the actions of Cyrus the Great, who had failed to cross the desert. The decision to cross the Gedrosian Desert, whatever his intentions, is regarded as the largest blunder in Alexander the Great's Asiatic campaign.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gedrosia
So Gedrosia included all the part of Sindh west of the Indus including Karachi which is where Alexander sailed from.
