Ganda ng Capas National Shrine very historic at nararamdaman ko yung sense of nationalism. Ano po ba yung kwento behind that? thanks...

The Capas National Shrine (Paggunita Sa Capas) in Capas, Tarlac, The Philippines was built and is maintained by the Philippine government as a memorial to the Filipino and American soldiers who died in Camp O'Donnell in Capas at the end of the Bataan Death March. This is an important site related to Veterans' Day in the Philippines (Araw ng Kagitingan), every 9 April, the anniversary of the surrender of the combined US and Philippine forces to the Japanese in 1942.

The shrine encompasses 54 hectares of parkland, 35 hectares of which have been planted with rows of trees to represent each of the deceased. On April 9, 2003, a new memorial wall and obelisk was unveiled. The 70-meter obelisk towers above the grounds of the former interment camp. The obelisk is surrounded by a black marble wall engraved with the names of the Filipinos and Americans known to have died at the location. On the three large wall segments that almost encircle the obelisk, there are statistics about the total numbers of prisoners and deaths, together with poems for peace.

There is also a small museum and a smaller monument built by an American group calling themselves the "Battling Bastards of Bataan", honoring the American dead of the period.

This is the ruins of the old Camiling Church.

Wow! Ang ganda ng version mo Dustin, lalo na doon sa old church. Okey yung suggestion mo, sana pagandahin at ipa-landscape yung paligid. Noong araw naman na ginagamit pa yang church, maganda talaga, sa side man o sa harapan. Wireless Access for Health Project Works to Improve Public Health Care in the Philippines

MANILA, Philippines, June 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Philippines Department of Health, Tarlac Provincial Health Office and Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), through its Wireless Reach(TM) initiative, today announced the successful completion of the Wireless Access for Health project's pilot phase. The project participants leveraged their expertise and resources in public health, medical care, technology and training to create an electronic health record system that meets the needs of health care decision makers on varying levels, ranging from midwives to doctors to policy makers. Results at the conclusion of the pilot phase, which recorded over 12,000 patient consultations, indicate that such a system is not only feasible and improves patient care in rural health clinics, but also has a real impact for decision makers.

Wireless Access for Health utilizes 3G wireless technology to enable a locally developed electronic health record system. In the Philippines, local health care providers compile and report public health data to the Field Health Service Information System (FHSIS), which is the major source of data used for policy analysis and planning. The Wireless Access for Health project aims to streamline this reporting process by building on and strengthening the existing Community Health Information Tracking System (CHITS), an electronic medical record system developed by the University of the Philippines Manila. CHITS improves patient care and access to public health information by consolidating data captured during patient visits into reports for health care workers in four health units in the Tarlac region of the Philippines.

"The Wireless Access for Health project's electronic health record system is the appropriate response to the DOH's need for finding innovative ways of transmitting reliable health data to allow for speedier decision making and action," said Dr. Esperanza Cabral, secretary of the Department of Health in the Philippines.

The pilot project's results have been positive at the rural health units in Gerona, Moncada, Paniqui and Victoria. A process that previously took hours to complete, CHITS now can instantly generate all 23 of the DOH's FHSIS reports, allowing for improved patient care and more efficient patient visits, as the time needed to search for records is reduced to just seconds. The ability to easily view, record and share patient information simultaneously across multiple computers within a health clinic allows clinicians to complete patient consultations earlier, resulting in increased capacity to provide further support to community health workers.

"Wireless Access for Health is truly beneficial for the entire public health system, from patients to doctors to health care authorities at the local, regional and national level," stated Dr. Ricardo P. Ramos, chief of Tarlac provincial health unit. "The system's accurate and timely submission of health data is important in helping the government to identify and prevent disease outbreaks across the Philippines."

"Good health is fundamental to our lives. The use of electronic health record systems improves patient care and public health by making it easier for health care workers to both record and report patient information," said John Stefanac, vice president of Qualcomm and president of Qualcomm Southeast Asia and Pacific. "Qualcomm believes wireless technology ensures widespread information access, as well as enhanced mobility and efficiency, to the average citizen - regardless of where consumers are. We are proud to be a part of Wireless Access for Health and are committed to enabling wireless technology that helps keep communities in the Philippines healthy."

In addition to the project's direct impact on health care delivery, it has trained 40 midwives and nurses to use computers for the first time, and Tarlac State University has gained experience in CHITS software development. This increase in knowledge, experience and resources for the various levels of health care decision makers enables Wireless Access for Health to serve as a model for replication across the Tarlac region and the rest of the Philippines.

"One result of this initiative is awareness among our partners in local health offices and local government units of the importance of data quality," said Myra Emata-Stokes, chief of The U.S. Agency for International Development's Program Resources Management. "This initiative makes it easy for partners to realize that the natural next step to systematic health information recording is data analysis and data utilization in places where these processes have not normally existed - even at the level of the rural health units, which are the most basic point of public health service."

"We are pleased to be part of this groundbreaking initiative. This project demonstrates that telecommunications can play an important role in modernizing the public health system, making it more effective and efficient in serving people even in remote areas of the country," said Manuel V. Pangilinan, chairman of Smart Communications, Inc.

This project is made possible through the collaboration of public-private partners: agencies of the Philippines Department of Health, including the National Epidemiology Center, the Information Management Service and the Center for Health Development for Region 3, local government units in Tarlac, Qualcomm's Wireless Reach initiative, RTI International, Smart Communications, Inc. (SMART), Tarlac State University, the University of the Philippines Manila-National Telehealth Center and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

Aquino name to boost RP economy'
By David Dizon, abs-cbnNEWS.com
Posted at 06/21/2010 1:35 PM | Updated as of 06/21/2010 1:35 PM

MANILA, Philippines - The iconic Aquino name could prove to be a boon to the Philippine economy as investors and credit institutions look forward to working with a new president that has promised to fight corruption in the next 6 years, outgoing President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's former economic adviser said Monday.

In an interview on ANC's Headstart, Albay Gov. Joey Salceda said the Aquino name elicits high trust for the incoming administration of President-elect Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III.

"We are back on the radar. The Aquino name is iconic. Immediately, it triggers and elicits a very affirmative image for the country, especially with Cory [Aquino] being a saint of democracy and the dad (Ninoy Aquino) being a martyr for liberal democracy. A Noynoy presidency is positive for the Philippines. The issue now is whether he can optimize that and the most important right now is choosing the right Cabinet," he said.

Salceda said investments could go up by P632 million, or 8% of the gross domestic product (GDP), once Aquino becomes president. He said foreign groups offering long term concessional loans have opened up to the new administration, while investor firms are planning to upgrade the country's credit ratings.

Salceda said a UP School of Economics study showed that domestic investment is sensitive to perception of governance. He said this was proven after local investors refused to part with some P3 trillion in net profits during the past 10 years.

"It's a trust in governance. It is not Noynoy you are voting for but what you feel what will happen to the country if he is president. I expect investment to shoot up to about 8% of GDP, or about P632 million so that's 632 million jobs being created without him doing anything but just be president," he said.

He also noted that another advantage of having Aquino as President is that the people would be more willing to pay taxes to a government that they perceive is not corrupt.

"Do you think the people will pay more because they trust the government? Yes," he said.

Edmonton Friends in the Philippines to enjoy Castle Downs playground rebirth

By Thandiwe Vela, edmontonjournal.com June 10, 2010

EDMONTON — A wooden playground that no longer meets local safety standards will be refurbished, packed up and shipped to a small town in the Philippines, to make way for a state-of-the-art facility.

Volunteers began construction on the new Castle Downs playground Wednesday, after new city standards forced the community to dismantle the equipment last month.

"This was an incredible park we had," said Mark Gross, who will travel to the Edmonton Friends Gawad Kalinga village in Tarlac, Philippines, to help rebuild the park there.

Project chairman Pat Zelenak, of the Castle Downs Recreation Society, said they did not want the old playground to go to waste.

"It's a shame, because a lot of times playground equipment will be pulled down and end up in the dump," Zelenak said. "It could be used in Third World countries where they have nothing at all.

"Instead of kicking rocks around for entertainment, children can get a lot of fun out of this equipment."

The Philippines was chosen as the beneficiary of the $80,000 worth of playground equipment because organizers wanted a safe country that had a stable government, and because north Edmonton has a large Filipino community of more than 10,000, said Minister of Employment and Immigration Thomas Lukaszuk.

"We know the Philippines is home to some of the poorest people in the world," Lukaszuk said. "But the same things make children cry and the same things make children laugh.

George Ilagan and Paul Hastings, partners in an Edmonton-based design firm, helped raise funds for the hurricane-resistant homes that make up the Edmonton Friends village in Tarlac. They will join Lukaszuk and about 15 other volunteers from Edmonton to rebuild the Castle Downs playground in the Philippines next January.

"The closest thing these children have ever come to a playground is an old rubber band and a tire pushed around with a stick," Hastings said. "Toys and a playground where they could swing and have fun is totally foreign to them."

The old playground, mostly made of wood, had been in use for 16 years and did not meet recently passed city standards.

Also being shipped overseas in a 40-foot container will be sports equipment, jerseys, and gift boxes filled with toothbrushes, colouring books and pencils and other items donated by local schoolchildren.

"Our kids are really sensitive to the needs of our local community and the larger global community as well," said Stephanie Busby, principal of Dunluce Elementary School. Students at Dunluce, St. Lucy, and Caernarvon schools will bring items they collected to the playground construction site on Friday.

The new Castle Downs playground is part of a $2.3-million project paid for through grants from all three levels of government and the fundraising efforts of the recreation society. It will include an expanded water park, increased parking, picnic areas, trails and permanent washroom facilities.

About 250 volunteers have signed on to help build the playground through the weekend. It is slated to reopen on Canada Day.

Gross is excited to see the happiness on the faces of the Castle Downs children and those in Tarlac when they see their new playgrounds.

"It's going to be priceless."

The Aquino Museum

On our way back to Manila from Baguio last Sunday, we decided to skip the SCTEX and have lunch at Hacienda Luisita in Tarlac. My parents, who are both active supporters of Ninoy Aquino back in the 1980′s – kept asking people if The Aquino Museum is somewhere near Jollibee Luisita… They asked 4 people, until one guy tells us that the said museum was just a block away.

We went and we were happy to find out that they were open on a Sunday! So, inside we went after paying an entrance fee of 100 pesos each (Sky went in free of course :) ). But you only have to pay 50 pesos, if you show identification that you’re a student.

I immediately got goosebumps when we started the museum tour. Portraits of Senator Ninoy and Mrs. Cory Aquino seem to welcome you as they smile to every one who goes inside. The museum clearly showed a thorough family and political history of the two icons. From family pictures to mementos. I was awestruck. First time I learned that Senator Ninoy Aquino was a news correspondent in the Korean war at the age of 17! Seventeen. Can you imagine?

It was unfortunate that cameras were not allowed inside the museum. I was able to take a few shots, until they politely told me the public were not allowed to take pictures. If cameras were allowed – I could stay there the whole day! Although, I do understand…

There were so many mementos, journals, pictures, paintings and gifts that were there for The Aquino family to share with us. The suit that Ninoy wore when he was assasinated, a picture of Mrs. Cory Aquino with Mother Teresa, a signed family picture from The Kennedys, Ninoy and Cory’s wedding photo with President Ramon Magsaysay as a sponsor and former vice-president Doy Laurel as best man.

It was apparent that they came from a lineage of politicians. The kind that practiced good governance. The kind that lived to serve The Filipino people…But to me they were royalty.

After our tour, we were ushered in the audiovisual room for a short film viewing. There we watched how Ninoy sacrificed his life – and their family life for the restoration of democracy. Wow, what a team Ninoy and Cory was until the end.

At the end of the film showing – I was trying my best to hold back the tears when they showed how Ninoy was shoved him like an animal inside a waiting military van – after his assassination. What kind of people would plan a thing like that?

But, for the first time in a long time now – I felt a twinge of Hope for the future of The Philippine Government. There is still Noynoy, who would carry on the torch started by his parents – for GOOD GOVERNANCE and DEMOCRACY.

A visit to The Aquino Museum is a MUST do when you’re in the area of Hacienda Luisita.

Guv, group forge alliance for Zambales infra, tourism projects

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- The Advocacy for the Development of Central Luzon (ADCL) and Zambales Governor Amor Deloso recently announced a joint commitment to advocate vital infrastructure and tourism projects in Zambales to boost economic opportunities in the province.

Officers of ADCL, led by Rene Romero, visited the Zambales provincial capitol in Iba on Friday.

Deloso welcomed the group's concern on the over-all economic development of Zambales, specifically its potential to be directly linked to the Clark Special Economic Zone (CSEZ).

ADCL has been advocating for the construction of Clark-Botolan Expressway.

With the construction of the expressway, the travel time from Clark to Botolan and Iba -- three to four hours via Gapan-San-Fernando Olongapo Road (GSO) -- will be cut down to 30 minutes.

The proposed Clark-Botolan Expressway will be connected to the Tarlac-Iba Road, which is still under construction.

According to Deloso, Tarlac-Iba Road construction was stopped due to alleged shortage of funds.

During the meeting, ADCL also committed to discuss with Bases Conversion and Development Authority President Narciso Abaya the needed completion of the Tarlac-Iba Road.

"If Tarlac-Iba Road and Clark-Botolan Expressway will be completed, Zambales will have a direct access to Clark Freeport. The province will eventually be linked to the Luisita Industrial Park via SCtex," Romero said.

"This is important for Zambales because most of the tourists and investors use Clark as a jump-off point to explore other areas in Luzon," he added.

These vital road networks will also enhance the province's capability to accommodate economic spillovers from the major industrial and economic zones in Central Luzon, according to Romero.

Romero also presented to Deloso the infrastructure and economic development plans for Zambales including Mount Tapulao (Palauig town) and Potipot Island (Candelaria town) eco-tourism promotions.

Mount Tapulao is a place in Palauig, Zambales with an altitude of 2,037 meters or about 6,500 feet above sea level.

It has a "secret garden" at its peak with natural bonsai trees, wild strawberries, endemic orchids, rare flora and carpets of moss.

"We want to help Governor Deloso promote Mount Tapulao as the next summer capital of the Philippines. It is the highest peak in Central Luzon and even higher than Baguio City. If I am not mistaken, Baguio City has only an elevation of about 4,500 feet," Romero said.

Sonny Dobles, ADCL vice president, said Mount Tapulao could be developed like the Genting Island in Kuala Lumpur.

"Genting Island has theme parks, hotels, cable car and other amenities that attract tourists. Like Mount Tapulao it is also about 6,000 feet above sea level and has the same temperature. But Mount Tapulao has an edge because it is already a haven to hundreds of pine trees while Malaysians are only starting to plant pine trees at Genting Island," Dobles said.

"But for short term development, Mount Tapulao can already serve nature lovers and mountaineers with its natural environ," he said.

Dobles said ADCL could help the Zambales Provincial Government with the needed linkages with travel agencies, business organizations, the national government agencies concerned, off-road enthusiasts, and prospective trekkers.

"We will help them promote the area so the local residents would benefit as soon as the number of tourists grow," he said.

The Potipot Island is another eco-tourism destination that is expected to generate income for Zambales' tourism industry.

The island is surrounded by pure white sand coral beaches and is easily accessible by a boat.

"The fact that you can walk around the whole island in less than 30 minutes makes the place even more magical. Zambales is indeed a haven for nature lovers, environmentalists, retirement communities and even for medical tourism," Romero said.

"It has a lot to offer, not mentioning its marine sanctuary in Masinloc. ADCL is very happy to have established an alliance withGovernor Deloso. We look forward to these projects for the people of Zambales," he added.

I will post this article in connection with this topic.

sige?yun ba yung sinasabeng tpluex pa yon?haha

Pero kung babalikan natin ang english lessons natin, wala namang kaibahan. :)

All systems ready for inauguration

MANILA -- The inauguration of President-elect Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III on June 30 is all set as volunteers of P.Noy unveil the activities on that day.

Jing Magsaysay, a volunteer for the Aquino media bureau, discussed the initial schedule to members of the media in a press briefing held at Aquino's headquarters in Quezon City.

The inaugural day will kick off with prayer services all over the country at 6 a.m. until 9 a.m. The general assembly will be at 8:30 a.m.

Government officials and guests for the ceremony entitled "Tagumpay ng taong bayan: Panata sa pagbabago" is expected to arrive at 9:30 a.m.

Some supporters of the incoming president may be camping out on the night of the 29th to witness the oath-taking, said Magsaysay.

Aquino will leave his residence in Times St. at 9:45 a.m. to meet outgoing President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in Malacanang while Vice President-elect Jejomar Binay and his family as well as Aquino's four sisters are expected to arrive in the inauguration venue at that time.

At 10:40 a.m., Aquino and Arroyo are expected to leave Malacanang.

At 11 a.m., the formal inaugural rites will start with the ecumenical invocation and the national anthem to be sung by pop icon Charice Pempengco. A musical ensemble will follow with the APO Hiking Society as the main guest artists.

Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile will then read the proclamation of the president and the vice president based on the number of votes won in the recently held automated elections.

Justice Conchita Carpio-Morales will administer the oath of office to Binay at 11:40 and followed by Aquino at exactly 12 noon.

Magsaysay added that a digital clock will be put up to monitor the time since the Philippine Constitution states that the newly elected president must take his oath at 12 noon.

Aquino will proceed to Malacanang for his first Cabinet meeting then to the Quezon City Memorial Circle for the street party after his inauguration in Manila. (Kathrina Alvarez/Sunnex)
