must admit the "big concerts" are a bunch of has beens or never weres. Where are real big names and proper concerts. I mean even in Dubai we have had Aerosmith,US comming oon, All the R&B and bling concerts and even diverse acts as James Blunt a etalica.

I know some of those have been in Sa but the quality of the concerts is pretty lame.

I don't think they're that bad. The Coca Cola Colab and My Coke Fest concerts were pretty awesome. Metallica, Seether, Simple Plan, Evanescence etc. are pretty big names ;)

I think the Colab/Coke Fests will become a yearly-thing considering they've been quite successful the past two years. If so then hopefully Big Concerts will be announcing an awesome lineup for next year's one.

^^I'd prefer the Coke fest than the 1 band tour. You get 3-5 of the best songs from the band, & they totally rock the crowd makes things soo awesome!

Now for Linking Park, Good Charlotte, Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco & My Chemical romance, please someone organise something :D

We have VERY similar music tastes Durbsboi :P Linkin Park really should have been here by now. As for Good Charlotte, them too! Fall Out Boy were here a few months back but for a one-night-only concert in Joburg :( REALLY hope Panic! decide to come here. Totally awesome band. And My Chemical Romance are just pure amazing...so they have to come too!

I think out of all of them Linkin Park will probably be the first to come. But anything can happen!

Rumour had it that Mary J Blige puts on a superb show from the moment she gets on stage and her performance in Cape Town at the spanking new Grand Arena at Grand West was no different.

The Grand Arena, which also opened for the very first time on 21 October, can accommodate 7000 people, sitting and standing with ease. If you are the more reserved kind of fan that prefers to sit back and watch the show on the big screen, there are an additional 5000 seats for your pleasure. But if you are an enthusiastic, active, dancing, jumping and screaming fan, the front platform is for you.

Those up front built the anticipation for as the venue's first show as they chanted in almost one voice: "Mary, Mary, Mary…"

The vibration of the crowd was almost tangible when the R&B queen hit the stage. Fans, including myself, were locked in a trance, captivated by her strong presence and energy in black high-heel boots. In total command of the venue she hypnotised the shrieking fans with a performance that revealed he absolute dedication to making and performing music.

But despite her glamorous, diva-like appearance in the spotlights, Blige didn’t forget her difficult rise to the top, her between-song messages focused on self-empowerment, self-worth and being true to yourself. "Do who you are, don't let anyone tell you who you are, do you," she said as the crowd applauded her strength. It was fascinating to see such a big international celebrity being so humble and true to herself.

Knowing just how to keep the crowd in her petite hands, she withheld her latest single until late in the show but when she finally said: "And now the moment you have all been waiting for," everyone knew that 'Be Without You' would be the next song on a hit-packed setlist that had already yielded soulful R&B and hip-hop classics like her breakout single 'I'm Going Down', the rousing 'You Can't Hold A Good Woman Down', and her well-received take on U2's 'One'.

Running up and down the stage, she held the microphone to the crowd as everyone hummed the lyrics of the familiar songs.

If there was still any doubt, Mary J Blige proved on Sunday night why she is called the 'Queen of Hip-Hop Soul'.

My Coke Fest 2008

Scoring a perfect hat-trick on the Coke side of life, and following the tradition of 2005’s Coca-Cola Colab Massive Mix and last year’s mammoth MY COKE FEST, Coca-Cola South Africa, in partnership with 5FM, is proud to announce the coming of MY COKE FEST 2008!

The mega-fest kicks off at the New Market Racecourse in Johannesburg on Friday, March 21 and proceeds to the Kenilworth Racecourse in Cape Town on Monday, March 24. In true “Coke side of life” style, MY COKE FEST 08 features the hottest line-up to date. A blend of the finest and most sought after International and SA talent!

Thousands of fans are expected to flock to the 2-day, 12-hour, 10-band, adrenalin-fuelled festival, and feast on some of the finest live bands in the world! Only Coke can quench such a music-thirst… We searched the globe, screening hundreds of hopefuls, converting some of the biggest known bands to the Coke side of life, and are excited to announce the international line-up for MY COKE FEST 08…

The all-star, multi-award winning line-up includes US Rock sensation GOOD CHARLOTTE, Britain’s “Best Live Act” KAISER CHIEFS, Sound Garden and Audioslave front-man CHRIS CORNELL, “Supermassive” MUSE, and the multi-platinum, Grammy-winning KOЯN. On the local front, the first band to be announced is one of SA’s top rock outfits, PRIME CIRCLE. This is only the beginning… so grab a Coke, watch this space, tune in to 5FM and enjoy the Coke side of life!

KOЯN
KOЯN has redefined the parameters of heavy music, revolutionising the genre by matching unsettling guitar textures and volcanic rhythms with jagged, introspective lyrics and intense vocal stylings. The band -Jonathan Davis, James “Munky” Shaffer, Fieldy and David Silveria - is one of the most popular hard rock acts in the world today, with a dedicated fan base and widely acclaimed live performances. They have sold in excess of 25 million albums worldwide, and four of their albums debuted in the top three of the Billboard Top 200, two of which entered the charts at number one. Their bold music defies categorization – it’s blinding musical fury, dark and twisted lyrical candour also radiates a hybrid funk and medicating, metallic shimmer. The multi-media maestros were the first band to simulcast a live concert in 2002 into movie theatres across the U.S. Earlier this year they filmed “MTV Unplugged: KOЯN” at MTV’s Times Square studio, for an MTV global TV event broadcast, across the US, South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia.

MUSE
Muse is the UK’s most innovative band. The three-piece group - Matthew Bellamy, Chris Wolstenholme and Dominic Howard - produces a unique blend of alternative rock, classical music, electronica, heavy metal, Spanish guitars, and progressive rock, and is well known for its energetic live performances. The band played the headline spot at Glastonbury, the legendary annual UK festival, and its headline concerts at Wembley Stadium earlier this year became two of the Biggest-hyped concerts of 2007, with the first show selling out in 45 minutes, six months before the gig! Muse’s latest album, Black Holes and Revelations, released last year, became its second UK album chart number one, reached the number 1 spot in several other countries and was in the Top 10 in the US billboard chart. The controversial single, “Supermassive Black Hole” became Muse's highest UK entry in the charts and won an award for Best Alternative Act at the annual MTV Music Awards. Muse was also named 'Best Live Act' at the Brit Awards for the last two years.

CHRIS CORNELL
Ranked 12th in MTV’s “22 Greatest Voices in Music” survey, ahead of such icons as David Bowie, Steven Tyler and Bruce Springsteen, Chris Cornell, the voice behind Soundgarden, Audioslave and Temple of the Dog, has been called “the single most dynamic rock and roll force produced by the Grunge Revolution of the early ’90s.” Nine years after the breakup of his band, Soundgarden, Cornell has become an enduring musical and cultural icon. Soundgarden struck it big with their single “Black Hole Sun”, of their three million selling album ,Superunknown, which also earned the band two Grammy Awards. The band’s 2002 self-titled debut album reached triple-platinum status, its follow up album, Out of Exile, which debuted at number1, and it became the first American rock band to perform in Cuba. His solo project marks his 13th career album, and features the single “You Know My Name,” the main title track for the movie Casino Royale. As a solo artist, Cornell explored more surreal musical textures, esoteric studio techniques, emotional lyricism and varied singing styles on his 1999 album, Euphoria Morning, whose single “Can’t Change Me” earned a Grammy nomination for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.

KAISER CHIEFS
The English alternative rock band, named after the South African Kaizer Chiefs Football Club, exploded onto the global music scene with its performance at Live 8 in 2005, as one of only two British acts in the lineup! After headlining its own UK tour, playing a handful of European festivals, including Glastonbury and the V festival, Kaiser Chiefs embarked on its first US tour, and followed it up with an opening slot for the Foo Fighters during its Australian tour in 2005. The group’s live performances – 75 minutes of hi-energy entertainment interspersed with the odd (relatively) less frenetic track - won it 'Best Live Act' at last year’s Brit Awards- one of three Awards collected by the band that night. Its hard work ethic was again rewarded, when it was offered the opening slot on NME Brats tour – with Bloc Party, The Futureheads and The Killers. Its award-winning debut album, Employment, sold almost three million albums worldwide, and stayed in the UK Top 40 for 18 months. Kaiser Chiefs’s follow up album, Yours Truly, Angry Mob, was released earlier this year, and has climbed its way up the international charts.

GOOD CHARLOTTE
The world-famous band has sold over nine million albums worldwide, and revolutionised its sound, creating an artful, innovative and vibrant sound that has redefined it. The group - Paul Thomas, Billy Martin, Joel and Benji Madden and Dean Butterworth - released its fourth album, Good Morning Revival, earlier this year. The album debuted in the Top 10 of 13 countries worldwide, giving the band some of their highest international chart positions thus far. Good Morning Revival follows the triple platinum “The Young and the Hopeless”, which spawned the band’s chart-topping hit single, “Lifestyles of the Rich and the Famous” and won an MTV Viewers Choice award, and 2004’s subsequent million-selling follow-up “The Chronicles of Life and Death”. Good Charlotte has accomplished something far more lasting than mere sales success – it moved and inspired a generation of kids left behind by much of today’s popular culture. Its powerful energy, straight-up directness and trademark blend of hi-energy hooks and sing-along harmonies make it one of the best live acts around.

PRIME CIRCLE
One of South Africa’s leading rock outfits, Prime Circle has released two gold-selling albums, spawning a host of number 1 hit singles, across charts country-wide! “Hello” off its debut album, “Hello Crazy World”, stayed on the High 5@5 for a whopping 21 weeks, becoming the station’s “most played local song”. The music video for the single “Live This Life”, off its second, same titled album, is also one of the most aired local music videos on television to date. The band - Ross Learmonth, Gerhard Venter, Dirk Bisschoff and Marco Gomes - has performed sold-out shows across the country and the UK, and was invited to play at the Dubai Desert Rock Festival earlier this year, along with the likes of Stone Sour, Iron Maiden, Incubus, The Bravery & Robert Plant. Other international bills include the Coca-Cola Colab Massive Mix in 2006, where it shared the stage with Metallica, Collective Soul, The Rasmus and Simple Plan, and 46664 Concert, alongside Annie Lennox, India Arie, Katie Melua, Will Smith, DJ Jazzy Jeff and Queen.

MY COKE FEST is presented by Coca-Cola and official radio partner 5fm, in association with Big Concerts.

KENILWORTH RACECOURSE may become Cape Town's outdoor music venue of choice, now that the Green Point Stadium, the former arena of choice for outdoor concerts, is being reconstruc?ted.

The My Coke Fest concert, held on short notice at Kenilworth Racecourse earlier this year, will return to the racecourse next year and it appears residents in the vicinity should start getting used to the music.

While police received more than 20 complaints of "unbearably loud music" from local residents when the My Coke Fest concert was held at the Kenilworth Racecourse earlier this year, many residents were quite comfortable with it.

The organiser, Big Concerts, is already making plans to host the concert at Kenilworth Racecourse in March next year.

"The construction period of the stadium at Green Point has left the city short of venues for major events and places that would ordinarily not be used are now being put forward as alternatives," says Councillor Owen Kinahan, ward councillor for Kenilworth.

On the day of the event this year, Claremont and Wynberg police had received 22 complaints, while some complainants went to Kinahan.

According to Big Concerts, organiser of the event, concerns expressed as a result of this year's event were considered at a recent meeting with representatives of a number of the city's line departments.

Kinahan said the city was extremely conscious of the knock-on effect for residential communities, as well as the city-wide implications for traffic and security.

Gwen Petersen, who lives opposite the racecourse on Rosmead Avenue, said she had received notice about the event two weeks prior. "I wouldn't mind having the concert held here next year, but the audiences must behave themselves, as they did this year."

According to Big Concerts, a date for a progress meeting was advertised through 2 000 flyers distributed within an agreed radius of the racecourse, but no-one turned up for the meeting.

While some residents complained about the unacceptable noise level, others felt quite comfortable with the event.

Stiv Samuel, a trustee of the body corporate of Annais complex on Doncaster Road on the northwest side of the racecourse, says: "The concert started at about 11:00 and went on throughout the whole day. We were worried about how long it would carry on, but it stopped just before 23:00. I didn't receive any complaints from our block. As it only once a year, I really do not have problem with it ?as long as the visitors are aware that this is a residential area."

Maya Stauch, manager of the Kenilworth Racecourse Conservation Area, said certain protection measures were applied around the conservation area when the concert was held in May and audiences were very well-behaved. "I don't have any problem with the concert being held here again," she added. Kinahan said: "It is vital that all Cape Town communities have their say to ensure such events don't become a curse of our city, but something that enhances it."

When asked what it takes to organise an open air concert of such magnitude, Ryland Fisher, chairperson of the Cape Town Festival, said: "You have to consult with the communities who could be potentially impacted on. There is not much you can do about sound levels, so the community has to be comfortable with hosting this concert."

And Rahsid Lombard, director of the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, agreed: "I would firstly consult the local communities who will be affected regarding all aspects of such an event, including parking, safety and security."

If you have queries or concerns about the concert, e-mail John Langford of Big Concerts at john@bigconcerts.co.za or councillor Owen Kinahan at Owen.Kinahan@capetown.gov.za before 20 December.

terrribly organized..amazing concert in terms of performance and quality.
10000 drunk people on the road after the concert..the city should have played a bigger role, it was a complete disaster using 1 road and 1 lane for pedestrians and vehicles.
